Autosport International will showcase the very best of high-performance engineering under one roof at Birmingham’s NEC on 10-13 January.
Traditionally focused on motorsport and Europe’s largest dedicated motorsport trade show, recent years have seen an increased interest from crossover industries, such as aerospace, defence, marine and medical.
Including two days solely for trade, Autosport Engineering, companies will showcase their latest innovations, while the show also offers the scope to initiate the transfer of technology and knowledge between other engineering arenas.
Since it was first held in 1991, the show has occupied a key place on the calendar for the British motorsport industry, which generates sales in excess of £6 billion annually.
Including eight of the 12 teams participating in the FIA Formula One World Championship, the industry is based around Motorsport Valley in the centre of the UK, which alone hosts 3,500 companies and 40,000 employees.
As the community’s major networking opportunity, 28,500 trade guests attended Autosport International in 2012, with over £800 million in business generated.
Among January’s expected 700 exhibitors, the rebranded Titan UK and newly-formed Phoenix Dynamics Group highlight the motorsport industry’s increasing diversity.
Formed over 30 years ago as race car and engine builder Titan Motorsport, the company has a long history in motorsport, having become a leading supplier of steering and drivetrain solutions.
Amid the global financial crisis, Titan began to explore opportunities in other fields. Now the company applies its advanced engineering techniques in a range of sectors, including aerospace, defence and marine, represented by the rebranding to Titan UK.
Increasingly prominent is the crossover of electrical systems, connectors and sensors between the sport and manufacturing arenas, with companies including Penny + Giles, Deutsch and EOS Group trading in a wide range of sectors.
This transfer of technology has become a key factor in the health of the motorsport community. However, it has also brought companies to the sport, such as Phoenix Dynamics Group, which will exhibit for the first time since acquiring Lake Interconnections Systems in August.
Specialising in the design, development and manufacture of high performance electrical interconnect systems and electro-mechanical assemblies, Phoenix Dynamics’ work features heavily in defence, energy and rail applications.
Having exhibited at Autosport International in the past, the company’s interest in motorsport progressed further when it took a controlling interest in Lake Interconnection Systems Limited, whose high-performance wiring harness assemblies are utilised in the sport, including Formula One.
“The flow of information and technology between motorsport and other engineering sectors is nothing new, however we are seeing more and more motorsport companies applying their expertise in broader fields each year,” said Autosport International Show Director Ian France. “That diversity is on show throughout Autosport International; both with motorsport companies expanding to other industries, and technology from other arenas entering the sport.”
