Cholmondeley Power And Speed Celebrates Another Successful Event

This year’s Cholmondeley Power and Speed (CPAS) has been a huge success with enormous visitor numbers through the gates thanks to an action-packed programme of content on land, air and water.

The three-day extravaganza included the first running of Motorshow Live! – Cholmondeley’s ride and drive event – a supercar celebration headlined by the amazing Ferrari FXX, a beer, food and comedy festival, aerial acrobatics thanks to the G-EWIZ Muscle Biplane, not to mention superbikes, Group B rally cars and pre-War behemoths.

This incredible line-up of content really brought in the crowds with Cholmondeley Power and Speed 2016 recording a gate of over 40,000 visitors over the course of the weekend.

Running for the duration of Friday morning, Motorshow Live! saw the Cholmondeley track given over to manufacturers and dealers, allowing them to offer test drives to guests and VIPs in their latest models.

Taking to the famous course were Lexus in the rapid RC F and GS F, Holdcroft Honda with the Civic Type-R hot hatch, Holdcroft Nissan with the LEAF EV, BlueBell BMW in the BMW M4 Convertible and Oakmere Motor Group, with the Lotus Evora 400, Exige Sport 350, Caterham 620R and Morgan Aero 8.

Throughout the weekend, visitors could feast their eyes on a full range from Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Lotus, Caterham, Morgan and BMW at stands located in the infield.

With one of this year’s major themes being Supercars: Past, Present and Future, Saturday saw the arrival at Cholmondeley of the star of the show, one of the most remarkable supercars of all time, the Ferrari FXX.

A race-prepared version of the legendary Enzo, the FXX is incredibly rare with only 30 made, all of which were meant to be track-only cars. Appearing at Cholmondeley was the only road-legal version – and it thrilled crowds, its ear-splitting V12 howling around the course.

The FXX was joined by a host of other head-turning supercars, with the Gumball 3000 crew causing a stir in a Mercedes AMG GT3, K-1 Attack and an Aston Martin Vanquish, while a pack of thoroughbred historic supercars – including the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Countach – also took to the track.

Two-wheeled highlights included a 1959 Vincent Ts Viscount and a 1961 Norton Manx and demonstrations from the highly skilled Supermoto UK riders.

A concours was also hosted by Cheshire Classic Cars, with Best Presented going to Rob Woodall’s Ford Mustang Convertible, Judges’ Choice going to Jane Weitzmen’s Toyota 2000GT and the Peoples’ Choice being awarded to Ron Pearson’s Ferrari 458 Italia. Overall Best of Show went to Keith Ashworth’s Mercedes 300SL Roadster.

On Saturday evening, the event hosted its first ever comedy festival. Stand-up comic Adam Rushton compered the event, which was opened by Duncan Oakley, a regular on the festival circuit, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

BBC Radio 4 regular JoJo Sutherland continued the entertainment before BBC Jesting About regular Rahul Kholi took to the stage. The night’s headline act was Ray Peacock who has appeared on Skins, Dr Who, Not Going Out and Russell Howard’s Good News.

While watching the stand-up show, visitors could enjoy food from a selection of specialist stalls and artisan suppliers from wood fired pizza, Mediterranean and traditional English to Thai, Japanese and Tapas. In addition, Hook Norton Brewery hosted a beer festival with a selection of over 20 craft beers and ciders from local micro-breweries.

Throughout the weekend, rib rides entertained crowds by the lake and scramblers showed off their skills on the off-road circuit and, in the skies, the Muscle Biplane G-ewiz performed an incredible display on Saturday and Sunday, hovering like a Harrier and performing double-hammerheads, complete rolls and even flying backwards.

Out on the track, it was the Ariel Atom 3.5, driven by Niki Faulkner, which got the fastest lap of the weekend with a time of 60.98 secs. He took the prize for post-‘66 competitors. For pre-‘66, it was Keith Fell in the Lotus Elan 26R who was quickest, with a time of 73.79 secs.

The most consistent car of the weekend was the Nash Healey, driven by Steve Graham, who received the regularity car award, with Ben Luke on the GG Quadster claiming the award for the most consistent motorcycle.

All four of these winners received a Zenith El Primero from Cholmondeley Power and Speed partner Zenith Watches.

James Hall, event director said: “Despite it being a damp weekend, It’s been a fantastic occasion, with some incredible content and a number of firsts for the event. We’ve been delighted with the success of our inaugural Motorshow Live! while the beer, food and comedy festival was a wonderful added element.

“We’d like to thank everyone involved in making this year’s event such a success and look forward to welcoming competitors, visitors and exhibitors alike back to Cholmondeley Power and Speed in 2017.”

Some words from key sponsors, partners and personalities:

Catherine Hurst, Head of Marketing, Brown Shipley: “It’s our second year at Cholmondeley and it’s been even better this year than last year. We’ve had a fantastic time with our co-sponsors, Lexus and Zenith, who have just been amazing. The whole team at Cholmondeley has been amazing and together with the second-to-none catering from Horseradish our clients have had a wonderful time. As a business we’re just so glad we did this sponsorship.”

Rebecca McDermott, Regional Brand Director North and Central Europe, Zenith watches said:
“It was fantastic to be at Cholmondeley Power and Speed and officially list the times of the competitors. With such a challenging track and mixed conditions, the skills of the drivers and riders were there for all to see. We’d like to congratulate everyone who took part over the weekend, particularly the four winners who each received our El Primero watch. The Zenith stand at the Brown Shipley area was well attended throughout the weekend and it was fantastic to share our brand with a very knowledgeable and enthusiast audience.”

Jonathan Jarrett, md of Oakmere Group: “Every year, Cholmondeley is the event that we look forward to most. The collection of cars from collectors, owners and manufacturers is fantastic and everyone who attends is a real enthusiast. Because of that, we always put a lot of effort into our stand, by bringing the cars that we think we really attract the interest.

“This year we’ve had a fantastic show. Motorshow Live! on Friday morning was a great success with over 100 test drives on the track. It has been amazing to demonstrate our range of British sports cars in the right surroundings. We’ve sold two cars this weekend.

“The track itself is fantastic to drive, extremely challenging yet so picturesque. There’s very little margin for error and it’s really rewarding. There’s just so much passion here that everyone just gets drawn along with it.”

Nikki Faulkner, driving the Ariel Atom, was fastest of all over the weekend with a time of 60.98 secs: “I’ve come to Cholmondeley pretty much every year since it first started, and I’ve seen it get bigger and better. The vibe is fantastic, with a great mix of racing cars, rally cars and bikes. Everyone has lots of passion and it feels laid back – it’s easy to get around and see everything. The track itself is very challenging.

“You have to know it to go quick on it. It’s quite bumpy and narrow, there are trees to avoid and hay bales, a big jump at the end…it’s certainly got character and it’s a real test of the car. You have to learn to adapt very quickly because the grip level changes through the weekend. I’m lucky to have been here so many times and I’ve got a great car in the Ariel Atom, one of the best cars in the UK, so light and fast, with sensational handling.”

Victoria Thorley, General Sales Manager, Honda Holdcroft:
“It’s our first year at Cholmondeley and we’ve had a fantastic time. The customers have really enjoyed visiting our stand and looking at our range of models. The new Civic Type-R has proved a huge hit, we did customer drives on the Friday at Motorshow Live! and I have to say that the experience was very successful. Customers loved driving the car on the track – quicker than they can on the public road! All our customers are over the moon.”

David Haynes, Nissan Holdcroft: “Cholmondeley is a well-run event with something for everybody from hardcore petrolheads to the regular man in the street who wants to look at a range of cars. The site is very well situated and it’s a well-run family day out. Motorshow Live! on the Friday and the traction action throughout the weekend has meant it’s been an active and progressive couple of days for us with a great atmosphere.”

USB sure you charge ahead with OptiMate

Purpose-built for motorcycles, OptiMate USB chargers are 100% true power rated, and deliver a continuous 2.1A – plenty for power hungry devices such as tablets and phones. They also come with a built-in Apple ‘handshake’, to guarantee iPhones and iPads charge at the appropriate maximum.

With devices like smartphones, tablets and sat-navs increasing in popularity among motorcyclists, on-bike USB charging is fast becoming an essential add-on.

Finding a suitable USB charging solution that can stand up to the rigours of the riding environment, and also deliver the correct amount of charge for the chosen device, isn’t straightforward. Many over-the-counter cables and ports fall short.

Most smartphones and tablets need to ‘qualify’ the USB charger before they will accept a charge; they check the voltage (5 Volts is the USB standard) and then verify the maximum current the USB charger can deliver. If the device receives the wrong signal, it can limit the charge current, or fail to charge altogether.

All OptiMate USB chargers also have built-protection for the motorcycle battery, to prevent it being drained: the Vehicle Battery Protection system will automatically stop charging any device if the bike’s battery voltage drops to 12.5V.

Like OptiMate’s entire range of connectors and cables, weatherproofing comes as standard, to help prevent moisture causing problems and damage to circuits, and guarding against any issues they may cause with the bike’s own electrical system.

The range includes the O-103 (£19.00 including VAT) – the ideal companion for tankbags fitted with the OptiMate O-30 tankbag power entry; the O-104 that comes with a moulded BIKE (DIN) ‘Hella’ plug that fits all BMW, Triumph and Victory OEM sockets (£39.99); and the O-110 USB splitter, which allows a rider to simultaneously charge two devices (from £11.99).

For details of the complete range of OptiMate USB connectors, leads and accessories – as well as their battery optimisers – visit www.optimate1.com

WDW2016: an exclusive concert at the grand Ducati gathering

WDW2016 (World Ducati Week 2016) will be hosting an icon of the Italian rock scene: Piero Pelù. A fervent Ducatista, the owner – for more than thirty years – of a rare Scrambler 350 produced in 1976 yet also the owner of a new Scrambler Sixty2. The frontman will be performing live in an exclusive concert reserved for participants at WDW2016. Thrilling focal point of the evening of Saturday 2 July, the concert will be held at the Santamonica stadium in Misano Adriatico near the “Marco Simoncelli” Misano World Circuit, the venue for the greater Ducati gathering from 1 to 3 July 2016.

A politically passionate artist renowned for his volcanic live performances and a magnet for fans of every age, Piero Pelù will be the special Saturday night “guest rider” of WDW2016. As in any Pelù set, the onlookers can live two hours of pure cool, packed with rock-and-roll energy. The Tuscan rocker will be putting on a top-flight live show at the world-famous two-yearly Ducati reunion: all participants can attend, whether holders of a WDW2016 1-Day Pass or 3-Day Pass.

Performing with Piero Pelù will be two awesome musical talents: guitarist Giacomo Castellano and drummer Luca Martelli, the latter a protagonist of the opening with the “Guerrilla Drum Show”. In short, two hours of pure rock energy. “I can’t wait to play in front of this crowd of incredibly passionate Ducatisti”, said Piero Pelù about his concert at WDW2016. “Because Ducati and hard-living rockers go hand in hand”.

Of course, Pelù’s concert is just one of many reasons not to miss WDW2016 and this special evening. The definitive programme, currently being completed, promises plenty of big surprises and awesome desmodromic fun in an event expected to draw tens of thousands of Ducati fans from all over the globe.

World Ducati Week 2016 is a mega-event that also involves the company’s strategic partners: for the occasion, they’ll become our main sponsors, linking their images and brands to this exhilarating, unique Ducati weekend.

TIM, an official Ducati partner in MotoGP since 2004, will be at WDW2016 with its “#guardaavanti” (“look-ahead”) campaign, co-created with Ducati to raise young people’s awareness of the risks of using mobile phones when driving/riding. At the “Marco Simoncelli” Misano World Circuit TIM will be displaying cutting-edge technology capable of engaging and entertaining participants while raising their awareness of just how risky a lapse of concentration can be when riding a motorcycle.

Another main sponsor of WDW2016 is Ducati’s technical partner, Shell Advance. For this 9th edition of WDW they’ll be the ‘title sponsor’ of the eagerly awaited “Drag Race by Shell Advance”. Moreover, there will be a press conference to share the latest product developments, breath-taking shows, distribution of freebies and a DJ set in the Shell Advance entertainment area, a corner dedicated to one of the MotoGP show bikes and an autograph session with Ducati Corse riders.

Last but far from least, Termignoni, a Ducati partner for over twenty years, will be at WDW2016 not just to display its products but also to organise one of the Ducati University seminars with talks by its own technicians. During WDW2016 it’ll also be possible to purchase and equip your own Ducati with a Termignoni system: you’ll be able to count on a direct technical/assistance service that the manufacturer of these famous exhausts is placing at the disposal of participants in the Misano-held event.

To take part in World Ducati Week 2016 just check out the various ticket/pass options on the website wdw.ducati.com:

3-day pass (½/3 July):
• Biker Pass € 95 and visitor/passenger pass € 65 (full fee)

NEW Team Classic Suzuki Clothing LAUNCHED

Suzuki has launched a brand new range of Team Classic Suzuki clothing, with fleeces, jackets, and t-shirts available based on the livery of the team’s XR69 replica, that was unveiled at last year’s Motorcycle Live.

The new-for-2016 range, which will be worn by the team at events including the Classic TT on the Isle of Man in August, is now available to order through all authorised Suzuki dealerships as well as online on Suzuki’s official website and the firm’s eBay store.

The collection features a fleece (£50), soft-shell paddock jacket (£70), t-shirt (£20), polo shirt (£25), cap (£12), and beanie (£10).

Suzuki GB Merchandise Coordinator, Faye Ball, said, “We’re really excited to add the Team Classic Suzuki collection to our merchandise range this year, it looks great alongside the team’s XR69, with its nod to Suzuki’s race bikes of the 70s and also the historic GSX-R touches too. Our race team wear has always been popular, and we’re sure this will continue with the new Team Classic Suzuki range, which joins the MotoGP team wear already available.”

Items from Suzuki’s race team collections can be purchased from the Suzuki website, eBay store, or through Suzuki dealerships

Hadleigh – first ladies glove from Knox

The Hadleigh is the first Knox glove designed specifically for women, and features OutDry® waterproof technology along with Knox SPS.

Designed in London to complement the Studio Collection Jackets and Jeans for women, the Hadleigh is a classically styled short-cuff riding glove made from 0.8 mm cowhide leather.

Unlike traditional waterproof liners, which are sandwiched between the glove’s outer shell and inner lining, the Hadleigh features an OutDry membrane that is bonded directly to the leather exterior. As a result the gloves do not look or feel any thicker than most summer motorcycle gloves.

This innovative technology prevents water building up between the outer layer and the waterproof liner used in most gloves, and it also seals the stitching and joins. OutDry is highly breathable – it allows perspiration to push through the glove with ease – making riding in hot conditions more bearable.

On the palms, low profile Scaphoid protectors shield the vulnerable carpal bones in the event of a fall and there is a soft gel knuckle guard too.

Nubuck palm overlay aids grip on the handlebars, which is useful in damp conditions.

The stretch leather cuff with YKK zip closure give a comfortable and snug fit, while the Hadleigh’s short cuff design allows it to sit neatly under the sleeve of a riding jacket.

Available in sizes S-XL, the The Hadleigh retails at £89.99 including VAT. Call Knox on 01900 825 825 or visit: www.planet-knox.com for details

New Vespa Colors Helmets for Summer

Available in four eye-catching shades – Nuclear Red, Grapes Blu, Apple Green and Sun Yellow – Vespa’s latest helmets add a vibrant splash of colour to summer rides.

Ideal for urban use, the classic jet design allows maximum peripheral vision and is also compact enough to fit inside most under-seat storage compartments, top boxes and side cases.

The ABS shell is tested and approved to the current ECE 22-05 safety standard and reflective edging helps the wearer to stand out in low light conditions.

Secured by a micro-adjustable seatbelt-style strap for a snug and secure fit, the Colors helmets all have a quick-release buckle, so there’s no fiddling around when a destination is reached.

A breathable, hypo-allergenic textile lining helps to keep the wearer comfortable and cool when hustling through busy streets. There are poppers for fitting Vespa’s Three Button Visor plus a goggle retaining strap, which is compatible with the Vespa Vintage Rider Goggles.

The new Vespa Colors Helmets are made in Italy, and each one is finished with a subtle tricolour Italian flag label and white Vespa logo. They come in sizes XS to XL and retail at £99.99.

Scottoiler introduces Off-Road bike protector spray

Motorcycle chain oiler manufacturer Scottoiler has introduced a new protector spray specifically targeted to the off-road community. The product, labelled TMX 365, is formulated to protect the bike during the ride and make cleaning easier afterwards. TMX 365 does not contain Silicone or PTFE and is readily biodegradable. Peugeot Scooters special edition RS series scooters will be available in a new Satin Technium colour scheme for 2016.

The first models to arrive in the UK will be the liquid-cooled Citystar 125i compact maxi-scooter and the Metropolis 400i 3-wheeler.

In RS trim the scooters get a low profile tinted sports screen, stainless steel foot plates, dual-texture sport seat and black wheel rims with an orange border.

Featuring a Dual Tilting Wheels (DTW) front axle, the Peugeot Metropolis delivers superb road-holding through its two front wheels, and is packed with technological equipment, including keyless ignition and tyre pressure monitors as standard.

The Peugeot Citystar 125i RS sells for £2999; the Metropolis 400i RS sells for £7199.

UK leads USA on Day 1 of MCN Festival

Crowds flocked to Peterborough Showground for the opening day of the MCN Festival of Motorcycling – advance ticket sales were up 40% on last year, following the event’s successful launch in 2015.

Show-goers were rewarded by Team GB delivering a double victory in the opening rounds of the Transatlantic Trophy series.

‘Texas Tornado’ Colin Edwards led the American flat-track riders, who pushed the Brits hard around the oval, but couldn’t prevent UK duo Aiden Collins and Oliver Brindley from dominating the competition. However, the Americans pushed back hard in the afternoon, leaving it all to play for on Sunday to carry off the silverware.

Visitors took full advantage of the many activities on offer, with more than 500 test rides taken on the latest bikes from Bultaco, BMW, CCM, Ducati, Herald, Indian, KTM, Suzuki,Triumph, Victory and Yamaha.

There were also opportunities to try an adventure bike in an off-road setting, motocross taster sessions and a selection of classic and vintage machines from the National Motorcycle Museum, available to ride around a closed circuit.

Stunt aces Steve Colley and Dave Coates entertained onlookers with shows throughout the day, while the sprinting displays and classic race bike parades attracted plenty of interest. The expanded Club Zone drew in bikers eager to browse hundreds of bikes of all ages and styles.

There were bargains galore in the huge retail zone, with amazing clearance offers from some big brand names, and lots of rare and unusual finds in the all-new autojumble.

Tickets to the show cost £19 on the gate, and children under 15 go free when accompanied by a paying adult (one child per paying adult).

Ultra-Limited-Edition Akrapovic Exhausts Launched to Celebrate 25 Years

Akrapovic has chosen to mark its 25th anniversary by launching a very limited-edition range of just 25 exhausts to celebrate this occasion, and the Slovenian performance exhaust specialists will be donating these exhausts to charity – so you will need to be pretty sharp to get your hands on one.

The 25 exhausts will be instantly recognisable with heat-resistant black paint over an ultra-lightweight titanium muffler. They will all feature an exclusive signature, the Akrapovič logo – which is dedicated to the company’s 25 years of exhaust technology innovations – and most important of all a number that will not only identify which one of the exhausts it is, but verify the rareness of these exquisite collectors’ pieces. Some parts of the systems also have special nano coatings to make sure they stay as good as new after use – that is, if they ever get used. The exhausts are all EC and ECE type-approved – so, if you managed to get your hands on one, you could still fit it on your bike and show it off in its full glory.

Available for a range of six motorcycles and one car, these rare exhausts will be limited to four of each for the BMW S 1000 RR, Yamaha YZF-R1, KTM 1290 Super Duke R, Ducati Multistrada 1200, Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R, and Honda CBR1000RR plus a one-of-a-kind exclusive car exhaust, a Slip-On Line (Titanium) for the BMW M4. The exclusivity of these unique exhausts will be further enhanced by the fact that they will not be available for purchase through any of the existing Akrapovič retail channels throughout the world. Instead Akrapovič is donating them to charity and they will then be auctioned to raise much-needed funds for various good causes.

Destined to become collectibles, the original prototype versions of these gorgeous pipes will be numbered 00 and kept by Akrapovič, to be put on show at the company’s headquarters in Slovenia and serve as a symbol to encourage the company in its endeavours for the next 25 years. These exhausts are the pinnacle of what Akrapovič has achieved over the last 25 years and are sure to increase in value due to the uniqueness of the design. So if you want one of these for your bike or car, or even to hang on the wall as a work of art – because they certainly are that – then keep an eye out on all of Akrapovič’s latest news features and social media networks to see when they are available for auction.

Suzuki adds TL1000S to Vintage Programme and Lists on eBay Store

Suzuki has added the TL1000S to its Vintage Parts Programme and has made it even easier for customers to order parts, with owners now able to order all available components through its own eBay store.

The TL1000S is one of a number of iconic machines included on the store as part of Suzuki’s Vintage Parts Programme, along with the likes of the RGV250, GT750, and the original GSX-R750F.

Launched in 2013, Suzuki’s Vintage Parts Programme is aimed at making owning, maintaining, and restoring classic machines from Suzuki’s history even easier, by listing parts still available, as well as making service and owners manuals available to download.

Suzuki GB Aftersales Marketing Co-ordinator, Tim Davies, said, “The Vintage Parts Programme was devised to make life easier for owners and customers. We know how popular eBay is when it comes to searching for parts, so it made sense for us to go to where customers were searching. I think owners are sometimes surprised or don’t realise how many genuine parts are still available to buy new. Listing them on our own eBay store is just an evolution of the idea that started the Vintage Parts Programme; making the sourcing and purchasing of parts as easy as possible for owners.”

Models featured on the Vintage Parts includes the RGV250 VJ21, AP50, GT250 X7, GT750 ‘Kettle’, GSX-R750F-H, GS1000SN, TL1000S, and GSX-R1100L.

KTM Announces MY2017 Sportminicycle Range

Big effort on small bikes: KTM is excited to announce the upgraded Sportminicycle range for MY2017 including the 50 SX, 65 SX and 85 SX models for budding junior riders and racers.

At a recent event in Las Vegas, as part of the Supercross series that was won by Red Bull KTM factory rider and back-to-back 450 Supercross Champion, Ryan Dungey, the new ‘Minis’ were unveiled with some exciting changes. For model year 2017 the 50 SX and 65 SX will receive the brand new AER 35 forks by WP Suspension, which is an incredible step forward in terms of air fork technology for junior motorcycles. This revolutionary technology allows the bikes to be adjusted easily for the growing rider with a simple fork pump. These models also boast a fully adjustable shock absorber, new exhaust system, an hourmeter and new graphics in the style of the ‘grown up’s bikes’, which allows these exciting READY TO RACE quality bikes step out as the benchmark in terms of junior machines.

The KTM 50 SX is a true KTM for young motocross riders at the entry level of the sport. With its steady, controllable power and an automatic clutch, the 50 SX is ideal for the budding motocross racer. Its bigger brother, the KTM 65 SX, is a fully-fledged piece of racing kit for youngsters, and sets the standard in terms of power, riding dynamics, equipment and craftsmanship.

The biggest machine in the junior range is the class-leading KTM 85 SX, which is available in both small wheel and big wheel guises. For MY2017 this machine retains its traditional sprung forks, but detail changes have further improved this ever-popular, class-leading READY TO RACE machine.

“It gives us great satisfaction to bring some major updates to the Sportminicycle range. Of course the biggest changes are in the suspension for the 50 SX and 65 SX, which now receive the brilliant, revolutionary WP AER 35 front fork system. This means that as a young rider is growing, the spring rate can be easily adjusted, as can the setting of the bike for different tracks and terrain. In the rear of the bike is a fully adjustable shock absorber, as well as other detail improvements throughout these small machines providing the very best quality for young riders,” said KTM Offroad Product Manager, Joachim Sauer.

“It gives us a lot of pride to see young riders embrace the orange family, giving them the feeling of quality equipment from a young age for those who enjoy riding for fun as well as those that go on to be professional athletes,” concluded Sauer.

The MY2017 KTM Sportminicycle range will be available in KTM Dealers at the beginning of June 2016.
