£75 for your old alarm when you upgrade to TrakKING

Motorcycle security expert Datatool has announced an exciting new upgrade program.

For a limited time this summer, when motorcyclists trade in ANY Thatcham approved alarm (not just a Datatool) and upgrade to a Datatool TrakKING GPS/GSM system, Datatool will give them a £75 credit towards their TrakKING annual subscription. This is an amazing 12 months cover for the price of 3, equivalent to just £2 per month!

The process is simple. From now until 1st September 2014 any owners visiting their Datatool dealer to have an old Thatcham approved alarm removed and replaced with a brand new, state-of-the-art Datatool TrakKING GPS/GSM system will be provided with a claim form to fill in and send to Datatool, who will be in contact to activate the subscription at the discounted rate. The £75 credit can be applied to either a one or three year subscription making the first year just £24 (with subsequent years charged at the prevailing rate, currently standard rate of £99 per annum).

The Datatool TrakKING GPS/GSM system offers the very latest in security technology, constantly monitoring a motorcycle, scooter or quad for unauthorised movement. Owners are initially alerted by SMS text message whilst Datatool’s 24/7/365 staffed call centre works with the Police for a swift recovery.

Dave Plummer, Datatool Brand Manager: “We recognise that as technology moves on, we need to make sure our customers are in a position to take advantage of it. There are many older bikes being ridden or sold with 10 or 15 year old alarms still fitted but over the years this technology has been super seeded with more efficient, effective and most importantly more reliable products. Datatool TrakKING is a security solution, which offers multiple benefits in addition to those provided by an alarm and will greatly increase the chances of recovery of your bike should the worst occur.”

Stay Grounded with XENA

XENA has updated its popular XGA Ground Anchor for 2014, so it’s now even easier and quicker to install.

The XGA requires just one bolt to fix it in place – no drilling multiple holes or lining up fiddly templates – yet is just as strong as anchors using a multi-bolt fitting. It is so tough that it has been awarded the Gold Standard by SoldSecure*, the highest grade possible.

Fitting could not be simpler. Simply drill the hole, assemble the anchor, push the bolt into the drilled hole and then turn the anchor until the unique torsion-controlled bolt holder within the device ‘clicks’, indicating that the unit is correctly installed. No spanners required!

It can be fixed to a wall or floor, inside or outside, and has a ‘fold flat’ design so it won’t get in the way when not in use. The low profile means it can also be ridden over easily, so it can be installed in narrow passageways or in a garage floor.

The XGA’s base rotates freely through 360 degrees, so chains and locks can be passed through the shackle easily, without having to manoeuvre the motorcycle into position. The swivel design also makes it incredibly difficult to get a purchase with a cutter or levering device. Combined with the extra thick shackle, it will resist the most determined of thieves.

The Xena XGA costs just £50 (including VAT) and is ideal for securing motorcycles, trailers, quad bikes and more.

Optimate Advice For UKs 500,000 Stored Motorcycles

More than a quarter of UK motorcycles are off the road at any given time. Department for Transport figures show that during 2012 (the most recent year for which statistics are available) on average more than 500,000 of Britain’s 1.8 million motorcycles, scooters and mopeds was subject to a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN).
Whether a vehicle is off the road for storage (e.g. winter ‘hibernation’), repair or restoration, battery maintenance will help to avoid inconvenience and expense when the bike is ready to ride again. Battery maintenance experts at OptiMate advise motorcyclists to follow three simple rules if storing their vehicles for longer than a month.
  1. All batteries have a finite life, even if never used. Lead acid batteries last longest if stored at stable room temperature and discharge faster in hot or cold conditions (temperatures above 35°C or below freezing). As batteries discharge, the electrolyte [‘battery acid’] changes from sulphuric acid to lead sulphate and water, a process known as ‘sulphation’. Sulphate crystals attach to the lead plates inside the battery cells and make it resistant to charging.
  2. Keep your battery 100% charged at all times. This not only keeps it in peak condition but also protects it from sulphation. The simplest way to achieve this is by connecting it to a smart charger, such as an OptiMate, whenever it is not in use.
  3. Never use a car charger to maintain your battery or jump leads attached to a car battery to start a bike with a flat battery. Motorcycle batteries have far less resistance than those fitted to cars (just look at the difference in size) and either technique could overheat the battery, accelerating the sulphation process. The OptiMate 3+ for example charges at a rate of 0.6 amps; some car chargers are rated at 20 amps!
The OptiMate 3+ will monitor and maintain motorcycle batteries while the bike is not in use and sell for £49.99 including VAT. For more information www.tecmate-int.com.

TomTom enhances Winding Roads experience for bikers

New software upgrade allows bikers to pre-plan their journey on their PC

TomTom brings enhanced route management functionality to TomTom Rider with updated Tyre Pro® software. Bikers can now create winding road routes on their PC before sending to their device and sharing with others.

Tyre Pro® allows motorcyclists to select the most exciting routes for every journey, from the fastest to the most scenic.  Now, for the first time, bikers can set the number of miles they want to ride and plan their route around distance to create the best winding routes.

Other new features include:

·       Motorcycle-friendly Points of Interest: to pre-plan a route via bike-friendly hotels, alpine passes and fuel stations.

·       Smarter ‘advanced expanding’ technology to help avoid potential differences between a planned route on a PC and the actual route on a device.

·        ‘Advanced Splitting’, to enable the biker to decide how to save the route on the device and specify how many waypoints are needed on each ride when the route file is too large.

Tyre Pro® is available for free for all consumers who purchase a TomTom Rider device from March 2014.

Everyone who buys a new or used motorcycle, scooter or quad now has easier access to the peace of mind provided by the Datatool TrakKING GPS/GSM tracking system.

Datatool used the recent Motorcycle Trade Expo to announce a recommended retail price realignment to just £179.00 + installation, making Datatool TrakKING the most cost-effective tracking system on the market.

Datatool TrakKING constantly monitors your bike for unauthorised movement, alerting you initially by (optional) SMS text message and then alerting our 24/7/365 staffed call centre who will contact you to advise that a potential theft is in progress.

The annual subscription, now reduced to just £99.00 per year, includes an initial quantity of text alerts per month as well the access to our highly trained staff at our Secure Operating Centre, who will work directly with the Police to assist in recovering your vehicle should the worst happen. If you choose the 3 year subscription option, you can be protecting your transport for as little as 26p per day.

Datatool TrakKING is approved by the Thatcham Research Centre, the UK insurance industry approvals body, which means you should qualify for an insurance discount (subject to insurers’ terms and conditions) for having the unit installed at one of our authorised installers.

Datatool TrakKING is available to use on any motorcycle, quad or scooter fitted with a battery, whether road or off-road, yet has a virtually zero current draw so won’t drain the battery.

Optimate 5 Voltmatic Recovers Both 6 And 12 Volt Batteries

OptiMate™ 5 Voltmatic is the first ever charger capable of automatically recovering 6V lead-acid batteries from deep discharge. Light [600 grammes] and compact, the OptiMate 5 VoltMatic will also charge and maintain medium to large 12V batteries [from 8Ah to 120Ah] making it suitable for motorcycles, motor boats and motor homes, as well as most cars and vans.

OptiMate 5 VoltMatic retains the fully automatic, 100% safe and easy-to-use characteristics of the 2 million OptiMates produced since 1995. Capable of recovering batteries retaining as little as 1 volt, OptiMate 5 identifies whether a battery is 6V or 12V and then runs a series of tests to see whether it requires desulphation or bulk charge. It then delivers charge in controlled pulses that equalise the voltage in each of the battery cells and checks that charge is being retained, before indicating that the battery has reached full charge.

Unlike other smart chargers, OptiMate has a unique 30 minute charge/30 minute rest cycle, during every hour of long-term maintenance charge, so it can be left connected to the battery while the vehicle is parked without any risk of overcharging or overheating. In a weatherproof sealed enclosure with 2 metre long input and output cables, the OptiMate 5 is supplied with both a permanent ringlet connection lead that has a weatherproof cap and battery ‘crocodile’ clips for bench charging.

Compatible with STD lead-acid batteries (with removable filler caps), sealed AGM ‘maintenance free’, GEL and spiral cell types too, OptiMate 5 VoltMatic retails for £77.50 including VAT. For information on the complete range of OptiMate battery optimisers and accessories visit www.tecmateint.com.

Testing Times With Optimate TS120

OptiMate’s new hand-held tester makes checking 12 volt battery and charging system quick and easy. Much more than a regular voltmeter, the OptiMate Test TS120 is a unique, hand-held, on-vehicle tester, which checks both the battery and charging system in one sequence:

1. Connect to the battery and the OptiMate TS120’s easy-to-read display instantly shows ‘rest’ voltage – an indication of battery health.
2. Next, start the vehicle and the OptiMate TS120 checks and displays the battery’s starting power. The lowest voltage will stay on display for a few seconds, as this is a good indication of the battery’s remaining starting capabilities.
3. Once the engine is running it then checks if the charging system is able to decently charge the battery.

Ideal for cars and motorcycles alike, the TS120’s three-phase test sequence allows any vehicle owner to see the health of the complete system and quickly diagnose whether a fault lies in the battery itself or with the alternator – saving both time and money replacing parts for new when not needed. An added benefit is the ability to check maximum charging voltage before replacing lead-acid batteries with lithium ones, as they cannot accept any overcharging.

The OptiMate TS120 is water-resistant and supplied with both crocodile clips and SAE connectors, selling for £29.99 including VAT. The test procedure can be seen in action at http://youtu.be/XDuaz-NlQo8. For information on the complete range of OptiMate battery optimisers and accessories visit www.tecmateint.com.

Twin USB Adaptor With Voltmeter

Power multiple devices on the move without worrying about draining your bike’s battery, with  the new Twin USB Adaptor with Voltmeter from Nippy Normans.

Charging on the move is a must for most riders – especially when touring – but keeping power-hungry smartphones, sat navs and cameras topped up can put the bike’s 12V battery under pressure.

Nippy Norman’s new Twin USB Adaptor displays the bike’s battery voltage whenever a device is plugged into one or both of its USB ports, so the rider can keep a close eye on power reserves – extra handy during stops for fuel or parking up, when the alternator isn’t putting power back in.

Voltage is shown on a bright blue illuminated digital display, so it stands out in low light and can easily be distinguished from other warning lights.

The adaptor plugs straight into any standard bike DIN socket – no hard-wiring or fiddly fixings to worry about – and each USB port pumps out 5V / 2.1 Amps; more than enough to keep the latest devices powered up.

It’s fully compatible with BMW’s Can-Bus system too.

The Nippy Normans Twin USB Adaptor with Voltmeter retails at £29.00 including VAT, and fits all BMW motorcycles with a DIN socket, as well as KTM and Triumph models too.
