TOMTOM Rider 550 Review

TOMTOM Rider 550 – review by Laramoto.

Why bother buying a dedicated sat nav like the TomTom Rider 550 when your smart phone will do? It’s exactly the question I asked myself before my 10 day tour around the Pyrenees. When we got stuck in the mountains and my mates smartphone had failed to find signal and cooked itself, I knew I’d made the right choice.

You’ll want the Rider 550 because its the latest dedicated motorcycle sat nav that TomTom has to offer and it includes worldwide mapping and pre-loaded motorcycle Points of Interests (POIs). Like any sat nav, you’ll need to consider how to mount it on your bike – look no further than the premium pack. It will remain on and charged and docks/undocks with a single click. You can fit the anti-theft system but I find it easier to take with me. The unit is totally weatherproof and has sufficient touch sensitivity, even through gloves.

The best bit about the TomTom 550 is the ‘Plan A Thrill’ feature. Select a destination and then adjust how wiggly or how hilly the route should be. The Rider 550 gets creative and takes you down anything but a motorway or dull A roads. I have found superb routes across the country that only a local would know exist, just add some common sense when you’re about to go green laning on your S1000RR.

It has regular speed camera updates and you can get your phone to talk to it through a dedicated TomTom app called MyDrive, but only via WIFI. The Rider550 syncs with a bluetooth headset too, but this is sometimes hampered by bluetooth connection issues. In summary – hassle free navigation wherever you are in the world. Reliable, weatherproof and with succinct instruction, you’ll find superb biking roads when you fit a TomTom 550.

TomTom VIO: The smartphone-connected satnav for while your on a scooter

TomTom has created the world’s first scooter smartphone-connected satnav called TomTom VIO.  The VIO is highly functional but makes a strong visual statement – once you’ve seen it on a scooter the bike looks naked without it. The circular glove-friendly touchscreen device acts as an extension to a connected smartphone, which uses the well-developed app as the brains. No more taking a phone out of the pocket while riding, finally.

The weatherproof display unit offers turn-by-turn navigation both visually and audibly via a Bluetooth® helmet audio system. When a call comes in, the display will show a photo of who it is so the rider can take it via the headset while directions remain on the TomTom VIO display.

TomTom’s famous speed camera warning system is built-in. But following the design of the TomTom VIO even these alerts are minimal and attractive. TomTom VIO’s speed display changes colour to red warning riders if they are going too fast, and then back to the original colour scheme when travelling within the limit. That means even without directly looking at the VIO the rider is acutely aware of their current speed.

Design detailing continues inside and out on the TomTom VIO thanks to snap-on silicon covers available in six different colours – ideal for matching up with the scooter. Then, to keep consistency, even the maps can be set to the same colour using one simple touch in the app.

Corinne Vigreux, co-founder and managing director, TomTom Consumer, said: “The innovative new TomTom VIO is game-changer for scooter riders. Not only will it speed up the commute, but gone are the days of fiddling with your mobile at the traffic lights, or wondering who’s calling as you negotiate the traffic. For the first time, riders can explore the urban jungle safely, and confidently, in style.”

The TomTom VIO is available from 8 September at Halfords and Amazon and on the TomTom website, priced £149.99. The device ships with a black, snap-on silicon cover – six other colours are available for purchase.

TomTom launches new Rider device for motorbikes

TomTom today introduces a brand new version of its TomTom Rider, a portable navigation device created especially for bikers.  Following feedback from the motorcyclist community, TomTom Rider has been designed to give bikers the ability to choose the type of route they want to ride:  from the fastest; to the most scenic; to their own personalised route.

Bikers can easily create and then upload their personalised routes direct to their TomTom Rider device.  By downloading Tyre® interactive software, bikers can search, create and edit their own routes on a PC.  Alternatively, a unique ‘Upload Routes and Go’ feature enables bikers to upload routes directly to their device and share them with other bikers via Bluetooth®.

In addition, TomTom Rider includes a feature that feeds audio instructions directly to the user’s helmet via Bluetooth®, meaning riders can fully concentrate on the road ahead.  The device also includes the introduction of a new 4.3’’ glove-friendly screen, which responds instantly to touch and is designed for riding in any weather conditions, including rain or bright sunlight.  The device also comes with a new charging bike dock that turns it on or off with the ignition of the bike.

With TomTom Rider, bikers can not only choose where to go, but more importantly how they want to get there,” said Corinne Vigreux, Managing Director of TomTom Consumer. ”We listened to feedback from motorbike communities to create a device that was customised for the way they want to ride. We found that the overwhelming majority of bikers use their motorcycle for recreational purposes and many actively seek out routes that offer fantastic scenic touring experiences. TomTom Rider gives bikers the ability to find and ride the best scenic routes in the world.”
