Dainese Explorer Range, Available In D-stores Now

The new Explorer line from Dainese is now available in UK D-Stores, the perfect time to tackle winter adventures. Clothing in the Explorer range incorporates materials which are the perfect blend of technology, comfort, and safety.

Whether it be the glacial cold of the Arctic Circle or the scorching heat of the desert, by way of mountain passes or long gravel roads, Explorer products are designed to protect riders and passengers in the most extreme weather conditions.

Antartica Gore-Tex Jacket and Pant

Antartica sets a new standard for defying the effects of even the coldest climates. Consisting of the Antartica Gore-Tex jacket and pant, the two pieces provide the best solution for riders who enjoy the challenge of snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures.

Antartica Gore-Tex features a removable inner goose down that serves as the first layer of insulation. An inner jacket instills confidence in even the coldest weather and can also be worn separately, meaning warmth need not be sacrificed when off the bike.

Both jacket and pant utilise a laminated Gore-Tex 45mm outer shell that provides unequalled protection against the elements. For situations where warmer weather emerges, direct-to-the-body vent zips at the chest and legs allow ventilation to maintain the ideal body temperature.

An inner adjustable lumbar belt on the jacket achieves a close but comfortable fit with all riders. Outer pockets are designed for ease of use when in the riding position and moved to the hips so as not to compromise fit. Unique G.O.Pocket compartments allow rapid storage of gloves and items during a stopover – a feature an explorer cannot do without.

Antartica Gore-Tex uses a pro-armor Level 2 back protector, as well as Level 2 elbow and shoulder protectors to guarantee the highest safety standards. A pocket for a Double Chest protector is included if additional armour is desired. With certified hip protectors and Level 2 composite knee protectors, riders can be assured of premium protection.

The Antartica Gore-Tex Jacket is available in sizes 34-52, in colours light grey/black and black/ebony, with an RRP of £1,299.95. The Antartica Gore-Tex Pant, also available in light grey/black and black/ebony, in sizes 28”-46” comes with an RRP of £749.95.

Gran Turismo Gore-Tex Jacket and Pant

The Gran Turismo jacket and pant are constructed to be the finest solution when it comes to road touring wear. The two pieces encourage riders to go further and explore the open road with premium safety features and Gore-Tex durability.

Both jacket and pant use a Gore-Tex 45mm laminated outer shell to provide superior protection against the elements. When conditions are more favourable, direct-to-the-body vent zips on the chest and legs allow the body to cool. A removable thermal fleece acts as an insulating layer, trapping warm air, and can be used when not riding for a more casual look.

For the jacket, Nylon 6.6 abrasion resistance fabric with Armacor and Kevlar inserts are joined by a Level 2 pro-armor back protector and removable composite protectors at the elbows and shoulders. For the pant, identical fabric technology is partnered with removable Level 2 knee protectors and pro-armor hip protectors for the best in protection, anywhere, anytime.

Gran Turismo is designed with convenience in mind, with an adjustable lumbar belt for a tailored fit and pockets designed to be easily accessed both on and off the bike. New G.O.Pockets provide compartments to rapidly store valuables and property, meaning the journey doesn’t have to stop for long.

The Gran Turismo Gore-Tex jacket is available in sizes 34-52 in three colour options – black/ebony, black/fluo-yellow and black/orange/ebony – with an RRP of £949.95. The Gran Turismo Gore-Tex pant is available in black/fluo-yellow and black/ebony, in sizes 28”-46” with an RRP of £549.95.

Dolomiti Gore-Tex Jacket and Pant

For the rider that doesn’t let the seasons stand in the way of their touring adventure, the Dolomiti line is the ideal choice. With year-round capabilities thanks to a modifiable design, the Dolomiti Gore-Tex jacket and pant take every season in their stride, keeping riders warm and dry at all times.

The unique three layer construction of the Dolomiti Gore-Tex jacket allows for four different configurations to suit every condition: full summer, rain, cold and winter. Warmer weather is tackled with front and rear vented panels, whilst a Gore-Tex inner membrane provides the best in waterproofing on rainy days. Inside, a removable thermal fleece insulates a riders body heat to keep them warm in cold conditions and can also be worn off the bike as a lighter individual layer.

The Dolomiti Gore-Tex pant takes charge of every condition with direct-to-the-body vents located on the legs providing cooling on warmer days, paired with the same Gore-Tex membrane featured in the jacket to resist the worst of wet weather.

Both jacket and pant use Duratex Main Fabric and D-Stone to create a tough but supple exterior. Removable composite protectors are featured at the shoulder and elbow of the jacket, and also at the knee of the pant with pro-armor at the hips. Pockets for chest and back armor allow for additional protection if required.

The Dolomiti Gore-Tex Jacket is available in four colour options – light grey/black/electron blue, ebony/black/fluo-yellow, black/ebony/light-grey and grape-leaf/black/red – in sizes 34-52 with an RRP of £549.95. Available in sizes 28”-46”, the Dolomiti Gore-Tex Pant comes in three colour options – light grey/black/electron blue, black/fluo-yellow and black/ebony – with an RRP of £359.95.

X-Tourer D-Dry gloves

Made to be comfortable and provide all year round protection from the elements, the X-Tourer D-Dry gloves compliment any outfit in the Explorer range.

Ergo-Techno knuckles and PU leather palm reinforcements provide premium protection without sacrificing comfort. D-Dry fabric is breathable to suit warmer climates whilst providing a waterproof barrier to moisture when conditions are not so favourable.

A visor wiper on the left thumb allows easy and safe removal of dirt and debris from visors and goggles whilst on the move. Touchscreen compatible fingertips add another level of usability when off the bike.

Available in black and black/fluo-yellow in sizes XS-XXXL, the X-Tourer D-Dry Gloves come with an RRP of £109.95.

X-Tourer D-WP boot

The X-Tourer D-WP boots effortlessly combine versatility, comfort and all-weather protection for the perfect match to any of the outfits in the Explorer range.

Premium protection is catered for with rigid inserts around the malleolus and thermoformed reinforcement on the shin. A gear shifter guard provides a hard wearing surface for durability, with a differentiated rubber sole providing excellent grip in all weathers, both on and off the bike. Reflective inserts around the boot increase a riders visibility in all conditions.

Flexible joints allow the boot to pivot whilst walking, ensuring the X-Tourer D-WP is comfortable to wear at all times. A side closing zip and strap make them easy to put on and provide all riders with a snug, secure fit.

The D-WP waterproof membrane provides a warm and dry shelter in wet weather, leaving a rider to enjoy the road rather than worry about the conditions.

Coming in sizes 5-16, the X-Tourer D-WP is available in two colour options – black/anthracite and black/fluo-yellow – with an RRP of £169.95.

Dainese To Unveil The New D-air® Range At EICMA

The Dainese Group is heading to EICMA to present the third generation of the D-air® airbag, a line of racing and road products that is now available for women as well. The Vicenza-based brand will also showcase Explorer, the collection designed for Adventure and Road touring. AGV will present the new AX9 helmet and the new graphics for the Legends line.

The 2019 D-air® range marks the debut of the third generation of the Dainese airbag, which possesses improved ergonomics and efficiency. The bag and algorithm were specifically designed according to use, taking into account the different ways it can be activated and the most exposed areas of the body. For the track, there’s now the new Misano 2 D-air®, the professional suit made of leather. The airbag is also making its debut in some of Dainese’s most iconic road products, from the Avro D-air® suit, to the leather Racing 3 D-air® jacket and the Carve Master 2 D-air®, the Gore-Tex garment dedicated to sport touring. The Tuono D-air®, the top-of-the-line, completes the collection. A number of garments are now also available for women, like the Misano 2 Lady D-air®, the first professional leather suit for women equipped with an airbag, the Avro Lady D-air®and the Racing 3 Lady D-air®. The products from the Lady line faithfully reflect the features of the airbags present in the men’s line, such as the bag, which possesses internal microfilaments protected by 27 patents.

These microfilaments are the distinctive feature of the D-air® bag, which forms the heart of the system. It’s the key feature that prevents it from losing its shape and guarantees controlled inflation along with even pressure and protection over the entire surface. Thanks to ongoing research and the analysis of more than 2,000 activations, the bag in the D-air® system is designed to only cover the areas of the body that actually need protection, allowing it to strike a perfect balance between safety and ergonomics, ensured by a system that is 37% lighter than the previous version. The completely invisible airbag is now better integrated into garments and guarantees comfort equal to that of a traditional jacket.

Dainese is also unveiling at EICMA Explorer, the new collection that is the fruit of research conducted in conjunction with MIT to develop space suits by analysing, studying and mapping “lines of non-extension”: areas of the body along which body movement causes neither stretching or contraction. The result of this knowledge is unbeatable lightness and comfort. The pieces in this collection were created to protect drivers and passengers from the most extreme climates and adverse weather conditions. The Antartica suit is the key piece of the Explorer collection and marries protection, comfort and style for the Adventure world, offering exceptional isolation from the outside temperature and atmospheric agents. The Antartica suit is joined by the Gran Turismo, which was designed for road touring and long days on the bike, keeping steering as easy as possible thanks to its superior fit.

Alongside Explorer will be the unveiling of the AGV AX9, the new helmet that, together with SPORTMODULAR, completes the AGV touring range. The AX9 helmet is designed for long trips, fulfilling the need for top-of-the-line comfort with its high quality interior and advanced ventilation system. The fibre composite shell makes the AX9 one of the lightest helmets in its segment. The Pista GP R and Corsa R, at the top of the racing range, in addition to two new Legends X3000 and X70 liveries, will also be showcased, together with the touring line.

All of the new Dainese Group products being introduced at EICMA 2018 will be on display in Pavilion 15, Stand I06.

Settantadue: Demon Flower – Untamed Creativity

“I try to create pieces that everyone can have some sort of emotional connection to or conjure up some sort of nostalgia.” – Othelo Gervacio, artist and Settantadue collaborator

The Patina72 is unlike any other jacket. Designed for the individual in everyone, this star of the Demon Flower collection is truly unique – no two Patina72 jackets are the same.

But where did the inspiration come from and how did New York artist Othelo Gervacio become involved in designing one of the standout pieces of the Settantadue brand?

Dainese Settantadue art director Renato Montagner explains “The Patina jacket shows the great skills that Dainese has in working leather. It is born from a collaboration with Othelo Gervacio, a NY painter I met while working with Scott Campbell. He is a Harley Davidson owner but doesn’t look like a Harley biker. Loves motocross, but just because he wants to get dirty and hear the roar. And he loves Valentino Rossi as well, even without being the typical Rossi fan. Othelo fully expresses the freedom of not wearing a uniform: not a biker, not a café racer, ‘just’ a guy who loves bikes.”

The Settantadue brand is focused on the connection between rider and bike, the freedom of the open road and the nostalgia that comes from remembering bikes of old and the memories attached to them. Othelo has his own individual history when it comes to bikes:

“I have been riding motorbikes for about ten years now. I started with a 1974 Honda CB that I brought back to life and customised myself to resemble a flat track racer. It was great to learn the basic mechanics of a bike and enable myself to handle most of the maintenance. I had a few random bikes in between, including a Triumph Chopper, but now I have a daily rider – a 1988 Harley Davidson Sportster. I do, however, have an appreciation for all types of bikes: race, dirt, dual, touring – anything on two wheels and over 300cc’s!”

Where did the inspiration come from to combine flowers with the world of motorcycling and where did Demon Flower come from? Othelo takes us through his inspirations and thought process that created the stunning one of a kind artwork that adorns the liner of the Patina72.

“I was inspired by the history and spirit of Dainese, especially drawing from the origins of the brand. Also, I just love the aesthetic of the world around racing. The suits, the personalised bikes, the adornments – all inspired what I have designed. Last but not least, the Speed Demon – such an amazing representation of the brand and speaks to anyone who rides!

“I discovered the Demon Flower after doing a bit of research in trying to find a personal connection between my art and the Dainese Settantadue brand. I couldn’t have found a better subject matter than the Tacca Chantrieri. It is a flowering plant that resembles a demon or black bat: 12 inches across and with long ‘whiskers’ that can grow up to 28 inches. They can grow over a metre high and are native to tropical regions of Southeast Asia. I had never seen such a flower before, almost seeming like they could have come from another planet. Of course, I was intrigued to paint such an eerily beautiful plant and include it into my language for the Dainese Settantadue collaboration.”

Soft drum-dyed premium leather is treated to obtain a distinctive patina that is only removed when the garment is complete, using a special manual brushing technique. The result is a jacket with unique tonal variations and an exceptionally soft, warm feel.

The refinement of the garment is further enhanced with gold metal zips and a lining created, and printed exclusively for Dainese Settantadue, by the New York artist Othelo Gervacio. This is why no two Patina72 jackets are alike.

With an RRP of £899.95 the Patina72 is available in the unique, manual brushed Cordovan in UK sizes 34 – 50.

Dainese is Back at Intermot with Explorer and the New D-Air® Product Range

After ten years, the Dainese Group returns to INTERMOT with exciting new Touring products and airbag technology. Dainese introduces Explorer, the new product line made especially for on & off road Adventure Touring. The third generation of D-air® products is also debuting, making available the highest level of protection for every type of use, including for female riders. AGV introduces AX9, the helmet that combines the best of both Touring and off road.

With the release of Explorer, the new Dainese product line, the definition of Touring is updated to incorporate these products, which are the perfect blend of technology, comfort, and safety.

From the glacial cold of the Arctic Circle to scorching hot deserts, by way of Alpine passes and infinite lengths of road, the Dainese Explorer products are designed to protect pilots and passengers in the most extreme weather conditions.

Dainese is making use of the experience it gained with MIT in developing the gear for the astronauts who will go on Mission to Mars 2030. Special attention has been given to analyzing, studying, and mapping the lines of non-extension: The areas of the body along which body movement causes neither stretching or contraction. This knowledge has led to a guarantee of unprecedented lightness and comfort in a product with advanced ergonomics and an exceptional fit.

Designed for on & off road Adventure riding on the planet’s coldest land, the Antarctica outfit is the adventurous soul of Explorer. Antarctica offers exceptional isolation from external temperatures and atmospheric agents. It also embodies Dainese’s technological excellence, providing highly innovative solutions like the Fast-Fit lumbar band that can be adjusted externally to customize the fit without having to open the garment, and the new patented Trixior® material that ensures superior abrasion resistance.

In Cologne, Dainese will also introduce its new product range with the integrated D-air® airbag, which has been expanded and completely updated to guarantee an unparalleled level of protection and to meet the needs of every type of motorbike rider. Relying on more than 20 years of research and the analysis of over 1,500 deployments, the bag in the D-air® system has been purposely designed to only cover areas of the body that truly require protection. Plus, the protection has been diversified according to track or road use. For the first time, Dainese’s D-air® airbag, the company’s feather in its cap, is now integrated into a divisible suit and also comes in a women’s version for female customers.

The historic Italian brand AGV is once again proving itself to be the natural extension of the Dainese Group head-to-toe safety system. Pista GP R is the perfect complement to the D-air® product range. It represents the state of the art for technology applied to protection, which is further confirmation of its role as the crowned jewel in the AGV racing product range.

The new AX9 helmet is being seen for the first time at Intermot. This helmet together with SPORTMODULAR, the 2017 breakthrough, complete the AGV Touring range and stand out as the ideal complements to the Dainese Explorer line.

AX9 combines the comfort of a Touring helmet with the style of an Off Road helmet. AX9 inherited the visor with Max Pinlock from the world of the Grand Tours, then it added a more comfortable lining and borrowed lightness from the Off Road sector, all of which places this helmet firmly in the top of its category.

All of the Dainese Group new products being introduced at INTERMOT 2018 will be on display in Pavilion 8, Stand C024-D029.

Dainese Exhibits At The 2018 Motor Bike Expo

Dainese Exhibits At The 2018 Motor Bike Expo With A Booth Dedicated To The New Dainese Settantadue Brand

The style of historic garments meets latest-generation technology: the Dainese Group’s new brand presents outerwear from its Speed Leather, Archetypes and Demon Flower lines at the Verona event.

Following the success of 2017, Dainese returns to the Motor Bike Expo and presents Dainese Settantadue, the Group’s new brand. Dainese Settantadue resurrects the history of motorcycle clothing in the glory years and gives it a Contemporary Heritage twist, with garments that combine elegance and technical solutions able to satisfy today’s safety requirements.

Art Director Renato Montagner explains the guideline that led to the birth of the new brand: “The main thread of Settantadue lies in its interpretation of Dainese’s origins and 45 years of experience, always at the forefront of innovation. The traditional processing of the leather, the attention paid to details recreated especially for each piece, the integration of Pro-Armor protectors without distorting shapes or equilibriums: a fusion, rather than a revisiting of past garments. Just as history is not only made up of heroes, style does not only belong to champions. This is why we’ve also taken inspiration from the every-day biker, who finds the bike to be a form of expression and keeps the spirit of this passion alive. For example, models like the Toga and the Chiodo were not linked to prominent figures in the past but have always represented a clearly recognisable image”.

The leather jacket is the star of the first Dainese Settantadue collection, a timeless garment that unites generations of motorcycle lovers. Lines include: Archetypes, Speed Leather and Demon Flower. All created with meticulous attention to detail, they are inspired by key stylistic elements from the past. Archetypes focuses on cult products such as the Chiodo, the classic leather jacket much loved by bikers, rockers and travellers in the 60s and 70s. Speed Leather brings jackets like Toga72 and Rapida72 to the attention of the public, jackets that hark back to the racing suits that Dainese produced at the start of its journey. The Demon Flower line presents Patina72, with its unique lining created for Dainese Settantadue by New York artist Othelo Gervacio and enhanced with a hand-finished treatment of the drum-dyed leather.

From 18 to 21 January, the entire collection will be on show in Hall 4, stand 14I.

The Dainese Settantadue brand narrative continues online with a dedicated website and social profiles that express the genuine passion for this original and authentic lifestyle day after day.

Dainese enlarges its iconic motorcycle heritage collection

Dainese enlarges its iconic motorcycle heritage collection with summer and female garments

Dainese, the legendary Italian protection company that created the motorcycle protection category, presents new men and female summer wear at Motor Bike Expo 2016. The new collection features lighter or perforated heritage garments and a dedicated product line for women riders searching for both technicality and style. Worldwide renowned for producing functional, technical performance gear for the world’s top motorcycle racers and recreational motorcyclists, with its vintage collection Dainese showcases a markedly different approach that emphasizes style, while maintaining protection from the elements and injury.

The product line pays homage to Dainese’s roots by fusing its Italian heritage with rugged, vintage style. The collection consists of lifestyle apparel and accessories, including jackets, shirting, knitwear, gloves and footwear in an assortment of earth tones, both for men and women’s wear. The company expertise in working with high-quality, full-grain leathers is exemplified in the collection’s outerwear and accessories that feature a myriad of treatment, finishes and protective aspects. Several elements feature utilitarian elements that meet various motorcycle safety certifications.

The collection’s outerwear offers various elements of rider protection and comes in a variety of finishes, such as waxed cowhide and suede leather. Men’s outerwear Heston and York and female jacket Keira Lady include a pocket to accept back protector – a motorcycle-safety innovation pioneered by Dainese more than 30 years ago. Each jacket features soft removable Pro-Shape protectors (Pro-Armor ready) built into the shoulder and elbow, as well as reflective inserts. The menswear apparel features masculine, classic styled cotton garments with protective elements like internal DuPont™ Kevlar® reinforcements for McKellen trousers.

Outerwear retails from € 399,95 to € 599,95, trousers are available at € 159,95, while apparel, including new Scrawl and Pocket t-shirts and Helmore sweater, ranges from € 39,95 to € 149,95.

Dainese is recognized for its motorcycle footwear, and the new collection features different shoe styles, ranging from Walken, full-length waxed cowhide and canvas boots, to Vicky Lady, female high quality full grain cowhide leather boots. While incorporating elements of weather and injury protection, the footwear is uniquely designed for comfort on and off the road. D-air® Misano 1000. The future of protection is in D-air®

Dainese celebrates 1000 deployments of the D-air® system by presenting the D-air® Misano 1000 leather jacket. This new Dainese product features a stand-alone electronically deployed air-bag for road use.

Misano Adriatico, Thursday 10th September 2015 – During an exclusive party held at the Riviera Golf Resort in San Giovanni in Marignano (RN) dedicated to all Moto GP professionals and the International press Dainese celebrated 1000 deployments of the D-air® system and presented the first stand-alone Dainese air-bag jacket for road use. To celebrate this important milestone, the newest Dainese jacket was named “Misano 1000”.

The future of protection is in D-air® and the data recorded by Dainese over the past 15 years prove just that. More than 1000 deployments on racetracks and open roads all over the world have been documented and analysed by the development team confirming the effectiveness and reliability of the system. The amount of data acquired thanks to these deployments further contributed to the continuos fine tuning of Dainese’s proprietary triggering algorithms.

The new Misano 1000 leather jacket operates without need of sensor kit fitted to the motorcycle.

The sensors, electronics and the GPS, in this configuration, are housed in the back protector.

The Dainese patented 3D airbag has an inner micro-filament structure which provides uniform inflation of 5cm over all surfaces to provide maximum protection and comfort. The patented construction of the air-bag is unique and differs from all other air-bags used in the automotive industry.

The triggering algorithm, the true brain of the system, utilizes six sensors hosted in the back-protector to monitor the dynamics of the rider’s body 800 times a second and determines when to deploy the system in the event of impacts, high-sides and low-slides with tumbling.

The Misano 1000 air-bag system works in synergy with the back and chest-protectors, safeguarding the riders collar bone, chest and back as well as limiting excessive strain to the neck.

The integration of the ON/OFF switch in the jacket closing flap provides an additional safety factor. An LED on the right arm shows the status of the system. The jacket which will be available, in two color schemes, from November at the price of €1499.

“With the Misano 1000, Dainese widens its range of airbag products reinforcing its total commitment to safety”, said Cristiano Silei, Dainese CEO. “The 1000 deployments of the D-air® system represent a true milestone in the adoption of electronic air-bag systems for motorcyclists. The future of protection is in D-air®.”

Ducati receives the Professor Ferdinand Porsche award for technological innovation on the Multistrada 1200 S D|air

The University of Technology of Vienna (TU-Wien) has awarded the Ducati Multistrada 1200 S D|air with the prestigious prize named after Professor Ferdinand Porsche. This is the first time the honour, assigned every two years by the Viennese University for outstanding technological innovation in the automotive industry, has been awarded to a factory motorcycle.

The prize-giving ceremony was held on Friday 19 June at the Vienna University Festival Hall to commemorate the innovative genius of automobile pioneer Ferdinand Porsche (1875 –1951), Laurea Honoris Causa of the University of Technology of Vienna, and so reward European engineering excellence.

This year the prize went to Ducati and Dainese on account of the engineering innovation shown by both companies in a ground-breaking engineering project focused on improving safety.

Professor Bernhard Geringer, Director of the Institute of Automotive Engines and Technology of the University of Technology of Vienna and coordinator of the Professor Ferdinand Porsche Award organising committee, formally thanked Claudio Domenicali, Ducati Motor Holding CEO, who was present at the cefremony. He then handed over the 2015 prize to Federico Sabbioni, Head of Vehicle Project Management of Ducati Motor Holding. On receiving the award Mr. Sabbioni stated “It’s an honour to represent the company at such an important ceremony. Ducati has always been committed to safety. Over the last ten years we’ve developed numerous systems for this purpose; from ABS, which today is a standard feature on all our motorcycles, and which is now available on the Multistrada 1200 complete with Cornering function, to Traction and Wheelie Control, as well as semi-active suspension. Passive safety is equally important when riding a motorcycle. Constructive, pioneering teamwork between Ducati and Dainese has led to the evolution of the D|air Street® System incorporated on the Multistrada 1200: it now includes a new algorithm that senses when the motorcycle is sliding out from underneath the rider and consequently activates the airbag. Moreover, the on-board system of sensors and control units has been developed together with the motorcycle to ensure quality and reliability. A huge step forwards for safety, then, but also an exceptional engineering achievement, the outcome of two brilliant companies with a strong R&D focus”.

The new Multistrada 1200 S D|air is a milestone in terms of technological innovation and riding pleasure. It provides, as a complement to other as-standard bike safety features, an intelligent vehicle-integrated system that is wireless-connected to Dainese-made Ducati Apparel D|air airbag jackets. The Multistrada D|air system analyses the data and can inflate the jacket airbags (rider and passenger) in just 45 milliseconds, considerably reducing the risk of impact-related injuries. The Multistrada 1200 S D|air has TÜV SÜD certification, issued by the authoritative German body responsible for wearable airbag standards.

The 2015 version of the Multistrada 1200 S D|air will be available in European Ducati Dealerships starting from the end of July.

Giacomo Agostini and Marco Lucchinelli together with Dainese to present the webisode #5 “Old Dogs”

The 15 times World Champion Giacomo Agostini and Marco Lucchinelli yesterday evening presented the fifth episode of the Dainese webseries at the Deus Café in Milan entitled Old Dogs.

The two Italian riders who have made international history – told the gathered press and motorcycle industry professionals about their experiences working with Dainese, a company that accompanied and assisted them both throughout their careers.

“When I started racing, racing leathers were little more than a layer of hide and didn’t protect us. If you fell, there was a real danger of hurting yourself. The leathers split apart, helmets weren’t safe and the tracks were dangerous – there were footpaths, guardrails and no run off areas. The driving passion behind Lino Dainese was to change things…he always sought compromises to make riders feel safer but that did not affect aerodynamics, lightness or comfort. He achieved just that – he created thicker but light racing suits, introduced the use of protection for the knees and back and investigated the potential use of airbags for more than 10 years” said Giacomo Agostini.

Marco Lucchinelli instead remembers how “Dainese has always been a very important brand name but what made it stand out from the rest was the passion Lino put into it. This went far beyond just business and mere interest. I’ll give you an example – the only year I didn’t use a Dainese suit – the year in which I won the World Championship – my Spanish sponsor couldn’t provide me with the suit I wanted. Despite this, Lino made me one and, to round things off, even put the Spanish sponsor’s name on it. That says it all – it was the spirit of both Lino and Dainese, to protect the rider before all else”.

As regards suits that can no longer be used, Dainese have now found a way of keeping them alive by recycling them and keeping their DNA intact. At this event, the company presented “moto re-cycling” in collaboration with Regenesi.

This company offers a range of accessories and small leather articles made from racing leathers used during actual championship races and testing sessions.

The Ducati Multistrada 1200 S Touring D|air

Ducati introduces the Multistrada 1200 S Touring D|air model, featuring an integrated, intelligent safety system wirelessly connected to Ducati Apparel D|air® airbag jackets by Dainese. Marking a “world’s first‟ in the motorcycle industry and combining the innovative designs from two famous Italian brands, the new Ducati model takes a significant step forward in two-wheel safety.

The cooperation of expertise between Ducati and Dainese has produced an intelligent system that uses sensors built into the Multistrada 1200 S Touring’s electronics to constantly understand the vehicle’s dynamic situation, deploying only when subjected to a genuine accident scenario. The Multistrada D|air® system completes the data analysis and airbag deployment inside both the rider and passenger jackets in just 45 milliseconds, considerably reducing the risk of injury upon impact.

The Ducati D|air® is the first production motorcycle with an integrated jacket airbag system to complete the necessary tests for certification by Germany’s rigorous TÜV SÜD, the association responsible for defining the standards for wearable airbags. Ducati’s premiere of the technology, developed with Dainese, further underlines the Italian motorcycle manufacturer‟s commitment to enhanced safety, already represented by their Ducati Safety Pack consisting of multi-level ABS, traction control and power-controlling Ride-by-Wire.

The Ducati Multistrada D|air®, which is also equipped with Ducati’s semi-active Skyhook suspension, will be available in European Ducati Dealerships from May 2014 onwards along with the D|air® Street jackets.

Multistrada D|air® Street technology
Now common place in the automotive world, the airbag remains the most effective passive safety system. A really effective motorcycle airbag for street use, however, must have a deployment time of less than 80 milliseconds in order to provide adequate protection to the rider against the impact of another vehicle. Until now, this system simply did not exist.

Ducati’s Multistrada D|air® system is designed to deploy in just 45 milliseconds, protecting the rider and passenger’s body exposed to impact by absorbing the forces with an airbag expertly built into the jacket by Dainese. The airbag system is capable of split-second inflation without hindering the rider and intelligent enough to understand the difference between a potentially dangerous accident and a low-speed incident, or the motorcycle simply falling over.

This intelligence comes from a sophisticated algorithm, which manages data delivered from two triple-axis accelerometers fixed to the left and right fork bottoms of the Multistrada’s front suspension and an additional two rear triple-axis accelerometers mounted in the D|air® Electronic Control Unit (ECU) positioned under the seat. When the sensors detect a potentially dangerous crash scenario, an algorithm is triggered which takes just 25 milliseconds to decide if airbag deployment is necessary or not. If deployment is necessary the D|air® ECU onboard the Multistrada, which is continuously in bi-directional radio contact between the system and the Dainese jackets, initiates and completes airbag inflation in just 20 milliseconds, a total of 45 milliseconds from the start of impact.

The system adds just 1kg to the Multistrada and the only visual difference to the model is the addition of an extra LED display on the main instrumentation that constantly provides the system’s active status. The horizontal display is divided into three sections with illuminated displays from left to right for “Rider”, “D|air” and “Passenger”. Designed to provide reassurance to the user, both the green-coloured Rider and Passenger sections illuminate constantly to confirm that the rider‟s and passenger‟s airbag jacket is connected (paired) with the D|air® system and ready for use. The system is programmed to warn the user of a jacket system error by flashing slowly and will flash faster if the jacket has failed to connect to the system after 30 seconds of key-on. The central yellow light remains off when the system is active and ready for use, but will illuminate constantly to warn of a low battery in the airbag jacket or a D|air® system error.

The original round, dot-matrix part of the Multistrada‟s instrumentation is utilised to display information for rider and passenger airbag battery levels in addition to airbag jacket scheduled maintenance reminders.

Multistrada D|air® airbag deployment scenarios
The system’s intelligence is able to recognise the main scenarios in which the Multistrada D|air® must deploy its airbag jackets. Those scenarios include: a) the vehicle’s frontal impact into another object, b) collision impact into the side of a vehicle side or rear impact from another vehicle and c) when control is lost and the motorcycle is sliding on its side. In this last scenario, the airbag deploys ready to provide protection against the rider or passenger sliding into an obstacle.

By recognising these scenarios, the system avoids to deploy during non-dangerous incidents, such as aggressive sport riding, losing balance while manoeuvring at low speed or the motorcycle simply falling over while parked.

Multistrada D|air® Street jacket by Dainese
The Ducati D|air® Street jacket (not included with motorcycle) is designed for long-range touring and provides maximum protection and comfort by introducing the D|air® airbag technology with GORE-TEX® membrane. In addition to the D|air® Street airbag system, which is powered-on with a slide switch built into jacket, the garment is equipped with shoulder and elbow protectors and a Wave back protector inside a waterproof and breathable GORE-TEX® fabric with detachable thermal lining. The highly innovative system is designed, developed and patented by Italian manufacturer, Dainese S.p.A., a world leader in the field of protective clothing for motorcyclists.

The garment incorporates two high-pressure, three-dimensional, 12 litre structural airbags inflated by two ‘cold’ technology gas generators integrated into the jacket lining. The three-dimensional airbag structure provides a controlled, high-pressure expansion that assumes a pre-formed shape designed to wrap around and protect the rider’s body. The jacket, which weighs just 1.5kg more than an ordinary jacket, feels exactly the same as a conventional garment, while achieving maximum impact absorption with minimum bulk.

The D|air® Street jacket reduces impact energy transmitted to the body by up to 72% compared with a back protector and up to 89% compared with a chest protector. This substantially enhances back, collarbones and chest protection in addition to limiting the “tilting‟ of the wearer’s head in relation to the neck, by reducing excessive helmet movement while “tumbling‟ during an accident.

The D|air® Street jacket‟s integral system, which requires a maintenance check every 24 months starting from its first connection (pairing) with the Multistrada D|air®, is powered by a battery pack charged via a USB connection built into the garment, from which a 5 hour charge will guarantee 30 hours of autonomy. The D|air® jacket maintenance reminders and battery levels are clearly communicated to the rider via the Multistrada’s instrumentation.

The Multistrada 1200 S Touring D|air
The brand new D|air® system is fully integrated into the highly acclaimed Multistrada 1200 S Touring, the multi-tasking motorcycle that features confidence-inspiring electronics, including the advanced Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS).

The D|air® introduction continues the Multistrada adventure with a long list of fascinating and high-tech features that enhance the model’s reputation for industry-changing innovation, including the second generation Testastretta 11° DS engine and the Bosch ABS 9ME braking system with full Riding Mode integration.

Combining ground-breaking design and unprecedented technology, the Multistrada’s Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro Riding Modes enable a truly enjoyable and customisable riding experience separated by just one click. The four-bikes-in-one concept makes instant adjustment to power and torque delivery in addition to electronic adjustment of suspension settings, traction control, ABS and Ducati Skyhook Suspension, instantly transforming the Multistrada to suit its rider and environment with precision.

Hailed as a true “game-changing‟ motorcycle, the Multistrada 1200 S Touring has attracted all types of riders by removing the borders between motorcycle categories. With the latest 150hp Testastretta 11° DS engine, a class-leading dry weight of just 207kg* and the application of advanced ergonomics, the Multistrada is not only powerful and playful, but also a comfortable and versatile adventure on two wheels. The eight-level DTC and three-level ABS of the Ducati Safety Pack (DSP) is now in addition to the innovative new D|air® system, further underlining Ducati’s focus on performance safety.

Dressed in Ducati red, the early entry 2015 Multistrada 1200 S Touring D|air comes fully equipped with additional side luggage, heated grips and centre stand and will be available in European Ducati dealerships from May 2014 onwards.
