Rarest Motorbike In The UK?

Rarest Motorbike In The UK?

Rarest Motorbike In The UK? How one man is ensuring his Wilkinson Touring Motorcycle stays on the road.

A retired driving examiner has quite the collection of vintage motorcycles, but his favourite may be worth more than he could ever have imagined.

Richard Mummery owns one of only four Wilkinson Touring Motorcycles left in the UK – two of which reside in the National Motorcycle Museum – and he’s still keeping it on the road.

He’s enjoyed many motorcycles over the past 40 years, but his ultra-rare model is definitely his most intriguing and the one he’s put the most care into.

“I love it to bits,” he revealed.

“I don’t want to get sentimental, but sometimes I’ve just got to stand there and look at it.”

Wilkinson, most known for manufacturing razors, made 250 uniquely-designed motorcycles between 1908 and 1916, with Mr Mummery’s being made in 1913.

“As soon as I saw it I said ‘yes please’,” recalled the former engineer.

“It was a hell of a lot of money in those days, but it’s worth a bit more than that now”

Mr Mummery has been a motorcycle enthusiast since childhood. At just 10, he was already getting rides on the back of his neighbour’s BSA Bantam D1.

He then was able to buy his first bike, a 1953 plunger frame James, at 16, before being called up to National Service at 21, where he was still able to embrace his love of bikes.

Thanks to Wilkinson Sword historian, the late John Arlett, and a slew of engineers, the lifelong motorbike fanatic has been able to ensure that his vintage bike hasn’t stopped taking him on journeys, even after a few mishaps.

“We push-started it on a nice downhill section of road, and it fired up very quickly but you couldn’t see for smoke, and oil was coming out of every orifice possible,” he told Forever Bikes*.

“Mr Artlett came down and he was over the moon that another Wilkinson had come to life.He was a motorcyclist as well, so I could talk to him as a motorcyclist.”

Mr Artlett was able to help the Canterbury local discover where his bike originally came from, plus where they could find the right replacement parts.

After all the restoration work, Mr Mummary wants to hold onto his Wilkinson motorbike for as long as possible, hoping he can keep it out of any museums for the time being.

“When the time comes, I would like to sell it to someone who is going to ride it,” he added. “I’d hate it to go to a museum.”

Electric two-wheeler popularity soars – expert advice for new riders

Search interest in the topic ‘electric motorbikes and mopeds’ has skyrocketed by 1000% in the last 5 years according to Google Trends. Now, Jessica Lofts from Lexham Insurance, leading insurance provider specialising in two-wheeled vehicles, shares her top tips for those considering to hop on the trend!

  • Google Trends data also shows that UK searches for ‘electric motorbike UK’ increased by 250%, and ‘electric moped’ by 200% in the last 5 years.

  • Between 2022 and 2030, the global electric motorbike industry is projected to grow by an average of 10.2% every year, while the UK government has recently pledged £381 million toward improved charging infrastructure.
  • 1 million UK households are likely to own motorcycles or mopeds by 2034.

“Given that running costs are typically lower for scooters, mopeds and small motorcycles, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing an increase in interest now that people all over the country are looking for ways to reduce their outgoings.” Jessica says.

“As charging infrastructure begins to improve across the UK and the market offers a greater variety of quality electric motorcycles, it’s definitely time to take a fresh look at the electric offering available to consumers. The models currently on the market have really revolutionalised over the last few years and are starting to rival many petrol bikes. Depending on the model, you might even be able to get farther on an electric motorcycle than you can on a full tank in a petrol motorcycle.”

As one of Lexham’s experts behind the BikeMatters blog, Jessica offers invaluable insights for those looking to join the electric revolution:

1. Choosing the Right Type of Motorbike or Moped

The first step in joining the electric movement is selecting the right type of motorbike or moped. With a variety of models on the market, it’s crucial to consider your specific needs, including commuting distance, storage capacity, and budget. Electric models offer the benefits of lower operating costs and reduced environmental impact, but it’s important to assess charging infrastructure in your area to help you determine whether the range of the model is sufficient. “My personal recommendation is the Piaggio 1,” says Jessica, “It is an affordable, well-spec’d, and stylish urban commuter, and costing just £2,550 makes it a pretty budget-friendly option too from a well-known brand!”

2. Legal and Safety Requirements

Remember, electric bikes require a valid MOT for road use, and you can verify your bike’s status on GOV.UK to sidestep any fines. While electric vehicles enjoy an exemption from road tax until 1st April 2025, it is mandatory to register them with the DVLA to ensure compliance with road usage regulations. So, for the newly initiated, what are some beginner essentials to add to the shopping list for electric motorbike and moped riders?

Valid License/ License Plates: Riders of electric motorcycles or mopeds exceeding 28mph must be at least 17 and have passed their CBT. Licencing for electric models mirrors that of petrol-fuelled ones, allowing rides up to a 125cc equivalent with a CBT. Licence plates must be displayed on electric mopeds, scooters, and motorcycles as per usual requirements.

Spare Battery: Many electric motorcycles, especially smaller models, offer removable batteries for increased convenience and range, allowing one to be charged while the other is in use.

Charging Cables: Always carry the charging cable for emergency recharges, and ensure compatibility with available charging points. Storing cables in under-seat compartments can keep them handy.

3. Getting insured with the experts

“The level of insurance you decide to get for your motorcycle or scooter really does depend on your personal preference and situation”, says Jessica. There really is no right or wrong answer as to which insurance to choose, just make sure you provide yourself with enough coverage if the worst were to happen”.

With ‘motorcycle insurance’ as a top breakout topic in Google Trends, finding the right motorcycle insurance coverage is a widely queried subject. This decision should take into account various factors, including motorcycle/moped value, living area, riding experience, and the bike’s intended use. Here is a breakdown of the main motorcycle insurance coverage available:

Motorbike and scooter insurance comes in three main types: Third-Party Only (TPO), which is the minimum legal requirement and covers damage to third parties but not the rider’s own vehicle; Third-Party, Fire and Theft (TPFT), which adds coverage for the vehicle if stolen or damaged by fire; and Comprehensive, which includes all the benefits of TPFT along with protection against accidental and malicious damage. Each type offers varying levels of protection to suit the different needs and preferences of riders.

Breaking down the difference between TPFT and Comprehensive insurance in clear terms, Jessica explains: “A third-party insurance policy will cover you for any damage to a third party (person or property) whereas comprehensive insurance will also cover any damage to your bike as well, regardless of whether the incident was your fault or not.”

The shift towards electric motorbikes and mopeds reflects a change in personal transport values and priorities, with sustainability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness at its core. As this trend continues to evolve, Lexham Insurance remains at the forefront, offering insights and recommendations to navigate this new landscape, making sure riders are well-informed and adequately insured for the road ahead.

Legendary racer Carl Fogarty makes surprise visit to popular bike meet-up

Nearly 2,000 motorbike fanatics were left overjoyed when legendary racer Carl Fogarty made a surprise visit to their free weekly village meet-up.

‘Foggy’, a four-time World Superbike champion, is still adored by an army of loyal supporters after becoming one of Britain’s most popular sporting figures in the 1990s.

And many were left grinning from ear to ear when they got the chance to unexpectedly rub shoulders with him in Old Buckenham, Norfolk, on Tuesday.

“I come every week, it’s my local place to come for a meet. It’s great to meet new faces and, obviously, you never know who might turn up,” said Carl Thomas, 41, from Norwich.

“It’s great Foggy was here. They’re all heroes, he’s a rider isn’t he so he’s a hero. I’m a biker so they all are. I let him do his thing, I’m not one of these who would jump all over him. He’s got more than enough people.”

Steve Kingston-Miles, better known as Bumble, also made the near 20-mile trip from the city to the popular Two-Wheel Tuesday gathering hosted by the Ox & Plough pub.

“I got a sneaky photo with him,” he laughed.

“I didn’t know he was coming. I came up because I thought he (friend, Carl Thomas) might be here and he said: ‘Foggy’s coming’ and I was like ‘is he?’ We were looking for him and obviously we found him. I wasn’t sure what I was going to say to him, I didn’t have a clue – probably ‘you came in the van didn’t you?’

“I am surprised to see him in Norfolk. I’ve never met him before but I have seen him race.”

The Blackburn-based superbike icon, who won I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2014, was in Norfolk on business catching up with North Lynn-based Bikesure – the motorcycle insurance broker he has been brand ambassador for since 2012.

The one-time King of the Jungle said: “It was a fantastic evening and an amazing turnout of bikes.

“The weather was amazing, it’s a great free event. I’ve been to quite a few bike meetings over the years, but I’ve never seen anything like that one before. It was a huge turnout.

“I was mucking in, flipping a few burgers and pulling a few pints, and if I’m ever down in Norfolk again I’ll definitely be calling in on the Ox & Plough on a Two-Wheel Tuesday.”

Visiting the popular event on the village green also gave him the opportunity to catch up with his long-time friend Martin Williams. When the 62-year-old got married, Foggy’s wife Michaela was the maid of honour.

“I’m used to walking around with him in places and us getting stopped,” joked the former Blackburn native who relocated to Stiffkey.

“It’s better than it used to be, it was manic in the 90s. But I still rip Foggy when it happens. We used to have a laugh by me pretending to take photos for fans and actually just taking a load of selfies – and one picture of the person with Carl obviously. It was nice to catch up and see some bikes, including the Ducati he made a short trip on to arrive. I hadn’t seen him for six months and it’s always great to catch up, he’s a top bloke.”

Two-Wheel Tuesday has been running since 2013 and was the brainchild of former pub landlord Ben Devlin. Current proprietor, Dave Tranmer, has overseen the event as it continues to flourish and attract thousands of bikers and non-riders alike from the first Tuesday in April until the end of October.

Mr Tranmer said: “We’ve never had anyone as famous as Carl Fogarty here before. It was a privilege to have him here and that he was even interested to come. It just proves how popular Two-Wheel Tuesday is. He had a great night as far as I’m concerned, it was a pleasure to have him.

“There were 1,200 bikes here, which equates to about 1,800 people on the green. It gets bigger and bigger every year. Bikers love it, most of the village love it – there’s a few that don’t, but what can I do? I try and keep it as peaceful and friendly as I can.

“It’s so popular because it’s on the village green. We give them a variety of food, a variety of drinks and there’s never any trouble. There’s loads of places to park and I think it’s in an area where the public can come to the green, have a great night and look at bikes – and bikers love people looking at their bikes. It’s just a great, peaceful evening to be honest.”

Bikesure was there to capture his shock appearance and put together a short heartwarming 90-second video that you can watch here:

Sunra partners with Lexham Insurance

Moto Electric, the sole UK distributor of the Sunra EV brand, has agreed a partnership with leading motorcycle and scooter insurance experts, Lexham Insurance, providing the official scheme for owners of the brand’s models.

Commencing with immediate effect, owners of the entire Sunra range can now benefit from preferential insurance rates from Lexham; leading specialists not only in scooter and small capacity motorcycles, but specifically for two-wheel EV models too.

Logan Black of Moto Electric, commented, “We’re very pleased to agree this partnership with Lexham. For us, establishing the brand in the UK isn’t just about bringing new products to the market, but ensuring we support both our customers and dealers as comprehensively as possible. Having a trusted insurance partner is an important part of this overall support, of which Lexham are incredibly well positioned for, thanks to their long-standing experience and great reputation for customer service too”.

With the Sunra range boasting five models, currently offering 50 and 125cc equivalents and with many customers based in urban areas, the team at Lexham have a panel of underwriters that aim to keep the cost of zero emission transport as competitive as possible.

As such, we can offer Sunra owners a truly cost effective approach in general to their insurance cover.”

9 collectable motorcycles hiding in the shadows

The flagship or halo classic and modern-classic motorcycles that hog the headlines in the media and garner most of the attention at auctions – not to mention fill the daydreams of bikers around the UK – are wonderful, two-wheeled creations but for those in the know there are some fantastic motorbikes that live in their shadows and deserve a moment in the spotlight.

In fact, some experts in the bike trade believe the overlooked motorcycles hiding in the shadows could be a better buy than the usual suspects – namely breakthrough bikes, such as the early crop of Japanese or Italian sports mopeds which will always have a special meaning to older, typical classic bike buyers, or, for their era, eye-opening 250s, or big flagship machines they could not afford back in the day.

Mark Bryan of Silverstone Auctions believes there are great bikes out there waiting to be discovered by a wider audience. “Sometimes unfathomably and unpredictably, particular bikes become collectable or desirable, and that can draw attention away from actually very good or interesting machines which live in the shadow of their bigger siblings,” Bryan told Hagerty.

It’s an undercard of bikes which were seen as second-string contenders back in the day, and remained there for decades – but are now beginning to pique the interest of those in the know while classic heavyweight collector motorcycles slug it out at the top of the market.

They’re almost exclusively Japanese and Italian machines, their motorcycle engineering and marketing nous recognising the range-extension and revenue value of creating a race dominator, and then introducing smaller or more affordable versions that looked the part, and sometimes even proved to be better bikes.

Mark Redfern of Somerset Classic Motorcycles agrees. “There are some cracking bikes out there which have lived in the shadows of their more illustrious siblings but are now coming into their own.

“The Kawasaki Z650, for instance. This was always the Cinderella bike in the range after the Z900s and then the Z1000. Prices are still quite low for the bike you get – very low compared to their bigger brothers – and they look good and ride well. They are just starting to get the recognition they deserve so now would be a good time to get one.”

Bryan of Silverstone Auctions homes in on smaller versions of ’80s and ’90s race rockets. “The ultimate for me is the Ducati 748, the baby brother of the 916. Then there’s the Honda NC30, the 400cc version of the 750cc RC30. They exploited the success and desirability of their bigger, faster and far more expensive relatives, but are fantastic bikes in their own right.

“All the Japanese manufacturers produced 600cc versions of the bigger 750 or 900cc models, sometimes for marketing or licence restriction purposes, sometimes inadvertently producing machines which proved to be far more ride-able and usable than the range-toppers.”

Japanese home market bikes were quite often smaller versions of the bigger US or European models, Honda even producing the screaming near-20,000rpm CBR250RR, the “baby Fireblade”. Mark Redfern concludes: “Overall, I would say that middleweights are more popular now because they are often lighter on the road and lighter on the wallet. Back in the day a difference of 20 bhp was a lot and people wanted all the power they could get. Now, as classics, that difference in power is marginal given the way they’re used.”

So what are the bikes the experts believe are living in the shadows of their brighter star siblings and deserve to have the dust sheet lifted, kick-stand raised and engine cranked into life for miles and smiles of riding? Here are their picks.

Suzuki GT550.

Price range: £2000 for restoration to £9000 for originals in excellent condition or fully restored.

The 50bhp GT550 (1972-1977) never really sold in the UK as people saved a little harder and bought the 70bhp GT750 instead. They lived in a bit of a no-man’s-land below the flagship and above the GT380 triple, yet these are great bikes and actually very rare – because nobody bought them back then. Values have already rocketed so they are no longer a bargain but they are now coming out of the shadows, and less pricey than the 750. Prices: £2000 for complete restoration to £9000 for originals in excellent condition, or fully restored.

Kawasaki Z650.

Price range: £1250 for restoration; £2750 for fair examples; £5000 for originals in excellent condition or fully restored.

Case in point about smaller versions of flagships being subjectively better: the 64bhp Z650 (1976-1983) was far less of a handful to ride than the Z900 – its power not overwhelming its chassis – even though it was amongst the most powerful bhp per cc machines out there. It looked a bit like the bigger Z, and some versions could actually challenge Suzuki’s GS750 when it came to performance. Cinderella may be on her way to the collector’s ball…

Honda NC30

Price range: £2500 for restoration; £4000 for fair examples; £10000 for originals in excellent condition or fully restored.

In 1991 a Honda NC30 would have set its original buyer back by £6600, now it’s anything between £2500 for a messed-with ex-trackday weapon to £10k for a mint example. You’ll find good usable examples for around £4000. What’s the appeal? It’s a smaller version of the legendary 750 RC30, one that looks the part, sounds the part with a 14,500rpm 59bhp V4, and goes the part too. However, it does mean a good number of NC30s have seen tracks whether in competitive racing or for trackdays. Dealers and owners caution that some parts like the exhaust are almost extinct, but there’s a hardcore of collectors who recognise the future value of these bikes. Now might be the moment to snap one up.

Suzuki GS550

Price range: £500 for restoration; £2000 for fair examples; £4000 for originals in excellent condition or restored.

In a range of Suzuki GS bikes that spawned 600, 750 and 1000cc sports bikes and race winners, as well as landmark regular road bikes, the 49bhp, GS550 (1977-1984) has been comparatively anonymous. Never really noted for its looks, and last into the 550 market, these bikes have not yet taken off in price as much as the GT550s but they are seen by in-the-know classic-heads as a great middleweight bike that represents good value for money.

Ducati 748

Price range: £3500 for restoration; £5000 for fair examples; £8000 for originals in excellent condition or restored.

Sometime less is more and in the case of Italy’s Ducati, it has a history of building 900-ish-cc machines and then making even better 750cc spin-offs. While the Ducati 916 was the basis for a race machine that conquered the competition on track, the 90bhp 748 (1995-2002) was considered by road riders who’d experienced both to be the better bike, feeling smaller and more sporty because of its freer-revving engine. But here’s the kicker: it currently tends to sell today for way less than its original £10,350 retail price. Maintenance history is crucial, though.

Honda CG125

Price range: £500 for restoration; £1200 for fair examples; £2500 for originals in excellent condition or restored.

Whoa. Where did that one come from? Honda’s seemingly indestructible and timeless CG125 (1975-2004) has always been, well, just there, existing. But the collector market switches on to practical and unexceptional machines often when somebody spots that there’s actually fewer around, in this case because CG125s have become a customisers’ favourite. Sitting in the shadow of the CB125 “sport” version, ’70s and ’80s CGs are increasing in value, use-ables at around £1,200, exceptional originals sneaking towards £2,500.

BMW R65

Price range: £800 for restoration; £2500 for fair examples; £4500 for originals in excellent condition or restored.

After a few engine improvements in early life, the BMW R65 (1978-1992) evolved into a great bike – following the trend, here, of smaller machines actually being more satisfying. BMW 750, 800, 900 and 1000cc machines of the ’80s shared very similar chassis, but the 45bhp R65 and its unfortunately insipid R45 spinoff, had a smaller frame. But the R65 always lived in the shadow of its “bahnstormer” touring and “sports touring” bike relatives. R65s are getting scarce because they too are customisers’ favourites, delivering a light and agile ride that really involves the rider.

Honda CB500-4

Price range: £4000 for restoration; £6000 for fair examples; £10,000 for originals in excellent condition or restored.

Sitting in the shadow of perhaps the most desirable Japanese classic, the Honda CB750-4, the significance of the CB500-4 (1971-74) is sometimes lost, not because it’s a bad bike, but because the 75bhp 750 is so comparatively immense in stature. Equal condition CB500s – once basket cases have been eliminated – are generally around two-thirds the price of CB750s. But the 50bhp CB500, generally 20% less mass part-for-part than the 750, is a better ride. In our view and the eyes of the experts, that makes it an intelligent acquisition.

Kawasaki GPz 550

Price range: £500 for restoration; £2500 for fair examples; £5000 for originals in excellent condition or restored.

The GPz 750 was the fastest accelerating production 750 back in 1982. Follow that. The 54bhp GPz 550 (1981-1985) had its work cut out. Like many 1980s bikes, its looks, today, are less than elegant. But elegance is relative, and we all see beauty differently, and ugly-beautiful classics have their place. The 550 was lauded as being a great all-rounder on twisty roads or motorways, but isn’t out there in huge numbers. But if you cared for bikes back in the ’80s, you may have noticed how many couriers chose to smoke around on these. That’s the indication of a good bike. A bit of an investment sleeper.

Hagerty partners with motorcycle racer and Isle of Man TT hero Maria Costello MBE

Hagerty is best known as a classic vehicle insurer, but with a 600,000-member strong Drivers Club, a magazine with 1.9m readers, more than 1m monthly unique users visiting its Media site and 1.4m subscribers on YouTube, it is one of the world’s largest automotive lifestyle brands.

2021 has seen increased investment across all aspects of the Hagerty business, from content and events and data to client services, as Hagerty strengthens its global offering to the motoring enthusiast.

The latest announcement from Hagerty UK is a partnership with Maria Costello, the renowned motorcycle racer, and the only female rider from the sport to be awarded an MBE. The partnership will see Hagerty branding on Maria’s LCR Kawasaki F2 sidecar and Kawasaki ER6 Supertwin racing motorcycles throughout the 2021/22 season, which includes an appearance at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Maria recently announced Vicky Cooke as her teammate in an all-female sidecar team for the 2021 racing season and beyond.

In addition, Maria will produce exciting content with the Hagerty media team, attend selected automotive events, and will take part in Hagerty’s successful online panel and seminar discussions.

A place in motorcycle racing history was secured when Maria was the first woman solo racer in the history of the Isle of Man motorcycle races to stand on the podium after finishing in third place at the 2005 Manx Grand Prix (ultra-lightweight category). Her legendary status on the island was maintained with a third-place finish in the 2016 Isle of Man Senior Classic TT, standing on the podium alongside race winner, and personal hero, John McGuinness – a 23 times TT winner. Maria has also secured a 12th place finish in the 2016 Isle of Man Lightweight TT and made history by being the first woman to race both a sidecar and a solo motorcycle at the 2019 TT.

Maria formerly held the female lap record at all three international road races, the Isle of Man TT, the Northwest 200 and the Ulster Grand Prix and remains the only woman to have held lap records at all three events.

Throughout her racing career, Maria has shown remarkable resilience and determination in the male dominated world of motorcycle racing, overcoming astonishing injuries – including 24 broken bones – to gain multiple podium finishes in real, public road racing.

Maria is also a previous Guinness World Record holder for being the fastest woman to lap the Isle of Man TT course at an average speed of 114.73mph, was voted BBC Northampton Sports Personality of the Year, became an animated character in a PlayStation game, was appointed as a stunt double for Reese Witherspoon and is a published author. In 2013 she founded ‘Woman on a Motorcycle’ – a community space where like-minded ladies can share experiences and ideas. Her pioneering women-only trackdays have also gone from strength to strength.

In 2018 Maria was made President of the TT Riders Association, the first woman to be inducted into this position in the charity’s 67-year history and is also an Ambassador for ex-F1 driver Susie Wolff’s ‘Dare to Be Different’ campaign to drive female talent. Maria also visits schools and communities to encourage young people to take part in sport.

Speaking of the partnership Lee Mathewson, Managing Director for Hagerty UK, said “Maria has a long history of challenging archetypes which is hugely inspiring. Hagerty wants to save the art of driving and riding and to keep the global automotive lifestyle alive for generations to come. To do that we need to celebrate those who are leaders in the field, allowing newcomers to feel inspired to join us. Maria fits perfectly with the ethos of Hagerty, and we are delighted to welcome her as a partner and to support her 2021 racing season.”

Devitt Insurance To Help Boost Skills Of Britain’s Bikers As Principal Sponsor Of Bikesafe

Motorcycle insurance specialist, Devitt, is to become the principal sponsor for Bikesafe, the national police-run initiative aimed at improving the riding skills and road awareness of bikers across the UK to reduce motorcycle-related road traffic accidents.
The partnership will see the two organisations work together to encourage all motorcyclists to take part in Bikesafe workshops, which are offered by 33 police forces across the country. All Devitt policy holders will be entitled to a 10% discount on Bikesafe courses, while customers who have completed a Bikesafe course will receive a 10% discount on a new motorbike insurance policy purchased through Devitt directly.
In their current guise, Bikesafe workshops offer a combination of classroom learning with a police officer and an on-road assessment, delivered by a police graded motorcyclist or approved observer. In the near-future, the initiative plans to launch an additional digital offering that will make the workshops more accessible to more people on a more flexible basis.
While the end goal of Bikesafe is to reduce the 60 serious motorcycle-related accidents that happen every single day on Britain’s roads, for the individuals taking part, the aim is to build on existing riding skills and fulfil their potential as a rider in order to get the most out of themselves and their motorcycle.
Both Bikesafe and Devitt Insurance also encourage the crucial continuation of advanced rider training via a range of organisations nationwide that offer post-test instruction – a step that can lead to the additional bonus of further reductions on insurance policy premiums.
For more information on Devitt Insurance Services or to get a quote, visit www.devittinsurance.com
For more information on Bikesafe or to book a workshop, visit www.bikesafe.co.uk
Tom Warsop, Head of Marketing, Devitt Insurance
“Devitt has long been an advocate of post-test training and encouraging motorcyclists to continually improve their riding skills. The new partnership with Bikesafe really underpins that belief. There is nothing but benefit to be found in completing a Bikesafe course and we hope that our existing policy holders and potential new customers take advantage of that benefit.”
Kev Mulligan, National Lead for Bikesafe
“We’re massively grateful for the support that Devitt give us, not just through this key strategic partnership but also in terms of the exposure in front of a wide and varied cross section of motorcyclists. The most common contributing factor to motorcycle accidents is rider error and our aim is to significantly reduce that factor, so the more bikers we can reach with our message the better. We see this as a long term partnership that won’t only benefit Bikesafe and Devitt, more importantly it will benefit the UK’s bikers.”

Bemoto: Insurance Firm Has Your Back On Track

Full range of track-based insurance products for riders, motorbikes and race vans

  • Personal Accident Cover for trackdays and amateur racing
  • Trackday Travel Insurance (Repatriation) for overseas track events and amateur racing
  • Race Van & Race Transporter Insurance
  • Track Bike Fire & Theft policies, with options for “In Paddock” and “In Transit”
  • Track Bike Damage Cover – for UK and European tracks, including the Nurburgring

Specialist motorcycle insurer, BeMoto, is now offering a full portfolio of track-related products to cover riders, bikes and even race vans and transporters.

Find out more about each product here: www.bemoto.uk/motorcycle-track-insurance

Owned, run and staffed by bikers, BeMoto completely understands the varied needs of today’s motorcyclists and the insurance difficulties often faced with regards to track riding and racing. The Peterborough-based company offers a suite of insurance products designed to cover riders, bikes and even race vans and transporters.

Following a successful launch last year of its Trackday Repatriation Insurance – motorcycle trackday travel insurance with options for amateur racing – BeMoto has diversified further by also offering Personal Accident plans, along with cover against Damage and Theft of prized track machines.

Mathew Long from BeMoto, said: “Buying track insurance can often be confusing and difficult to navigate. As bikers and track riders ourselves, we know what is important; from small details such as making sure track bike modifications are covered in the event of a damage claim, to the larger losses such as fire, theft, injury, death or repatriation insurance from overseas trackdays. Likewise, our dedicated Race Van Insurance has already prevented clients from paying sky high insurance to cover a van, which is used just a few months each year and even then, mostly remains parked up at a circuit.”

Motorcycle Trackday Travel Insurance (Repatriation)

Emergency medical costs as a result of an incident on track are usually excluded from normal travel insurance policies as a ‘hazardous pursuit’, but it’s important to get this sorted before a trip as many circuits or organisers won’t let riders on track without medical and repatriation cover. With this policy – also valid for touring holidays and off-road riding – BeMoto will make sure emergency medical and repatriation costs are covered up to £250,000 in the event of a motorcycle accident on a trip. Also included is crash damage to riding gear, plus baggage, money and cancelation cover.

Personal Accident

Not something anyone wants to think about but getting hurt while riding can happen. Many personal insurance policies exclude injury or death when participating in what they consider to be “dangerous sports”. BeMoto offers a Personal Accident policy designed for bikers to provide piece of mind for when heading out on road, dirt or track as an amateur rider or racer.Cover includes up to £500,000 for life changing injuries, as well as smaller amounts for fractures or burns and up to £200,000 for accidental death. Starting from as little as £3.96 per month, you can make sure you and your family will be properly protected 24/7 (cover continues at home, at work, when playing amateur sports or when travelling overseas).

Race Van Insurance

Many trackday riders and racers will have a van or transporter dedicated for such activities to carry a motorbike or sidecar and all the accessories, like spare tyres, to and from events. BeMoto’s specialist Race Van Insurance has been designed to offer the petrolhead community an affordable method of insuring such vehicles up to 17.5 tons – as long as it’s not a main vehicle and has a main use of transporting bikes – in other words social use with occasional commuting (not used commercially).

Trackday Bike Damage Insurance

A trip to the gravel can be expensive and normal motorcycle insurance policies exclude damage to your bike when used on track, but BeMoto is not normal. The company offers an affordable standalone solution with sensible excesses to insure your motorcycle against accidental damage whilst it is being used on circuit at an organised UK or European trackday – even at the Nurburgring! The product is available for single day use, with discounts for multi-days or groups of riders buying together for a single day. The policy doesn’t cover timed events or races and the bike needs to be owned by the policyholder – with or without a V5.

Track Bike Fire, Theft & Transit

BeMoto offers policies to cover dedicated race and track machines against fire, theft and malicious damage (including attempted theft) when they are not in use and kept in a locked garage, shed or lock-up. The place of storage doesn’t also have to be a home address and the machine doesn’t have to be road registered. Further cover can be added to cover when “In Paddock” or “In Transit” when a machine is being transported on a trailer or in a van, which covers fire, theft and damage to the bike in a road accident when being transported (as long as a claim is being made on the carrying / towing vehicle as well).

All products are subject to underwriting. Terms & conditions apply.

Be Modified With BeMoto: Insurance company will replace declared modifications

Motorcycle specialist insurers, BeMoto, have announced that its policies will always replace declared modifications on an approved claim for like-for-like products or the very nearest substitute.

The trailblazing Peterborough-based company prides itself on its flexibility with the needs of today’s motorcyclists and is more than aware the huge potential losses when needing to ‘rebuild’ a bike to a personal specification after making a claim.

Owned, ran and staffed by bikers, BeMoto completely understands and respects the majority of riders like to personalise their motorcycles and have developed specialist deals with underwriters in order to make sure these all-important modifications are covered. Better still, a large number/most popular bolt-ons and other enhancements are covered on its propositions as standard with no change in the premium.

Mathew Long from BeMoto, said: “Nobody wants to make an insurance claim, but when a rider is forced to replace or rebuild their pride and joy, they want it be just how it was before. Not one of the bikes in our car park is standard and modifying is something that most riders like to do. BeMoto accepts a large number of modifications as standard with no change in the premium.

“While many other brokers say they ‘cover’ modifications, often – in the case of a claim – these are actually replaced with standard factory parts. At BeMoto, we replace declared mods like-for-like or the closest alternative. So it is in the best interest for riders to tell us about any changes.”

As more than a passing nod to their modifying roots, BeMoto also offers ‘Carbon’ or ‘Titanium’ options for its policies for road bikes and trikes. While some companies choose to enticing with a super low basic proposition and then ‘upsell’ with a series of bolt-on products, BeMoto offers these set choices across the board for its third party, third party fire & theft or fully comprehensive options.

Carbon

This level of cover, available as standard, no amendment fees and extended cover for trips to Europe up to 90 days as standard.

As well as the usual coverage parameters Carbon includes £100k legal expenses as standard, which is something that most insurance companies charge additionally for.

Titanium

In addition to the £100k of Legal Expenses, for typically an addition of just £30 Titanium offers:

  • Full UK and European RAC Breakdown cover for the bike, which includes Roadside, Recovery, At Home, Onward Travel & European Breakdown cover)
  • £1,500 of Helmet and Leathers cover
  • £20,000 Personal Accident Cover.

Bennetts celebrates Coventry roots at 2017 MotoFest

Bennetts is set to rev up its involvement in Coventry MotoFest in 2017, as the UK’s leading motorcycle insurance brand returns to the city in which it all started as the official sponsor of the popular event’s Sprint Circuit on ¾ June.

Bennetts was founded by Frederick James Bennett in Coventry back in 1930, originally operating under the banner ‘F.J. Bennett and Sons’ and providing customers in the West Midlands with general insurance services.

Initially based in Queen Victoria Road, the company moved premises when its offices were demolished to make way for the construction of the Coventry Ring Road in 1969, subsequently basing itself in Ironmonger Row.

In a neat twist of symmetry, Coventry Ring Road now plays a pivotal part in Coventry MotoFest as the setting for the 1.5-mile Sprint Circuit, which sees some extraordinarily talented drivers and riders performing wheel-spinning and tyre-burning heroics in front of tens of thousands of awestruck spectators. So Bennetts is, both literally and figuratively, coming full circle.

Now speeding flat-out into its fourth year, Coventry MotoFest boasts a unique blend of high-octane motor sport demonstrations, static car displays and live music amid countless other Coventry and transport-related activities – with a variety of innovations in the pipeline designed to make the forthcoming edition the biggest and best yet.

“We’re absolutely delighted that Bennetts will be sponsoring the Coventry MotoFest Sprint Circuit this summer,” said Festival Director, James Noble. “We very much enjoyed working with them last year as they dipped their toe into the water, and we are already collaborating on a raft of exciting plans for the 2017 event.”

With a busy contact centre in Coventry, Bennetts is justifiably proud of its heritage in the UK’s ‘motor city’ and sees many opportunities with what has already firmly established itself as one of the Midlands’ leading family-friendly festivals.

“Bennetts has over 85 years of heritage in Coventry,” commented Vince Chaney, Managing Director of Bennetts, “and we are proud to have retained a presence in the city over that time.

“We are delighted to extend our association with Coventry MotoFest by becoming the title sponsor of the Sprint Circuit and believe that the event will have a great future. MotoFest has already generated significant interest and we look forward to working with the organisers to build its profile within the biking community.
