OLEV Grants Enhance Harley-davidson Livewire as The Ideal Commuter Solution

LiveWire 2018

The zero CO2 emissions motorcycle is now eligible for EVHS grant.

As commuters continue to seek cost-effective and social distanced alternatives to public transport, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has reduced some of the cost barriers associated with electric motorcycles. The changes further highlight the benefits of two-wheeled electric vehicles as sustainable options.

OLEV approved low-emissions motorcycles benefit from an additional government incentive “plug-in” grant of 20% of the initial purchase price, up to a maximum of £1,500. In the case of LiveWire® customers, the £1,500 grant is automatically deducted from the list purchase price at time of sale by the supplying Harley-Davidson® dealership.

Customers who are VAT registered and business users can also claim back the 20% VAT associated with business or promotional use purchases.

In addition, the latest OLEV announcements introduced a 12-month continuation of the ‘electric vehicle homecharge scheme’ (EVHS) and the official list of eligible plug-in electric-only cars and vans was also amended to include large electric motorcycles. This means that the electric Harley-Davidson® LiveWire® motorcycle is now eligible for a £350 grant towards the cost of purchasing and installing a dedicated home chargepoint unit.

Plus, the OLEV funded grant is available to places of work under the Workplace Charging Scheme to encourage more employees to go electric in the future.

With dedicated ‘chargepoint’ units, a higher-powered charge is delivered for faster charging and, used in conjunction with a low-economy electricity tariff, enables LiveWire running costs to be reduced.

For further information on the Harley-Davidson LiveWire please visit the dedicated LiveWire pages or contact your local dealer.

To further highlight the benefits of motorcycling in today’s new normal, the biking industry has launched unlockyourfreedom.co.uk to deliver essential information on how to start out on two wheels, from gaining motorcycle licence entitlement to training and much more.

King of Kings 2020 winner announced

After many epic Battle of the Kings contests across the globe, Harley-Davidson saw 18 winners from previous rounds go head to head with an unlimited budget, Sportster build-off as the climax of this custom competition. This year saw 18 previous winners come together to battle for the crown of King of Kings.

Oscar Peralta and Harley-Davidson Querétaro, Mexico were the eventual victors with their stunning “Apex Predator”, followed by grand final runner-up Harley-Davidson Athens, Greece with their Roadster-based submission Gryps and third-placed Sykes Harley-Davidson from the UK with their Choo Choo entry. Special commendation was given to Harley-Davidson Thunderbike who were awarded the H-D Styling Team Pick by Brad Richards, VP of Styling and Design at Harley-Davidson Motor Company.

The team started the design of the Apex Predator with the mantra, “Born to attack without a challenge. Born to live without rival”, keeping the team focused on creating an aggressive, fresh look for their King of Kings entry. The bike clearly demonstrates the technical abilities within the Querétaro dealership, with a stunning hand crafted 2-1-2 under seat exhaust, combined with a vented hand-built tail unit that accommodates the one-off upswept exhaust. Creating a flowing line from the wave brake disc rotors and upside-down Showa big piston forks at the front.

The clean, uncluttered front end uses the LED Daymaker™ headlamp from a Harley-Davidson® Breakout®. The bikes lines and design are uninterrupted by the TFT flat panel dash, taking nothing away from the design. The bike also boasts a collection of custom hand and foot controls, paired with the hand finished Alcantara seat unit. Additional bespoke bodywork incorporates the twin air intakes complementing the stance of the bike. The exceptional Sterling Green paintwork supported by acres of powder coating, add a luxury feel to the final presentation.

It faced strong competition from Athens as well as one of the two UK entries from Sussex-based Sykes, who used a Sportster 1200 Custom as the donor bike for a vintage performance-inspired build. A Softail Slim front wheel was placed into a Paughco springer front end, with a converted friction damper based on a WLR Flathead design adding to the vintage style.

RSD Tracker handlebars were cut into sections and welded to the top fork clamp, while grips handmade from leather string were wound on and waxed in place with an internal Kustom Tech throttle assembly. The paintwork was courtesy of a Wurth rattle can aerosol paint with logo and pinstripes by builder Tom Winchester’s sister, Miss Peaches Designs, then distressed by pouring brake fluid over it!

And while a carefully styled turbocharger unit added speed; a lot of time and attention went in to ensuring such a modern component was painstakingly designed to fit with the vintage theme.

Speaking of the result, Sykes Harley-Davidson Dealer Principal, Steve Willis, said: “Obviously, our aim was to win, but top three in a global custom competition of this calibre is amazing and I’m really proud of what Tom and the team have achieved. In recent years, our custom design and builds have been bringing regular, new customers to us and this achievement gives them another reason to trust us in creating their dream machine. Congratulations to Querétaro and Athens – both were stunning builds.”

The iconic Sportster platform provided the donor bike for each custom build in the 2020 King of Kings grand final; its core strengths make it one of the easiest vehicles in the Harley-Davidson range to customise.  Since 1957, the Harley-Davidson Sportster has been used to create more individual custom bikes than any other – with its classic lines, characterful Evolution™ V-Twin motor and a huge selection of Genuine Harley-Davidson Parts & Accessories, building the perfect bobber, café racer, tracker or chopper is within easy reach.

Jon Bekefy, GM of Global Brand Marketing at Harley-Davidson Motor Company congratulated the winner, saying: “2020’s King of Kings Battle of the Kings competition was a watermark moment for the Anniversary of this legendary platform and a celebration of the talents and culture that Harley-Davidson dealerships bring to customers every day. Querétaro Harley-Davidson’s entry Apex Predator is the ultimate representation of the flexibility and capability of the Sportster. It shows that from choppers, bobbers, café racers, and the race track, the Sportster has an unmatched pedigree of expression and community among motorcycles.”

King of Kings – the ultimate custom battle

After many epic Battle of the Kings contests across the globe, the famed Harley-Davidson annual dealer custom build-off competition is set to conclude with one final showdown. This year sees 14 previous winners come together to battle for the ultimate crown and bragging rights.

Representing UK & Ireland for the King of Kings competition are Peterborough-based Sycamore Harley-Davidson® and Sykes Harley-Davidson® from East Sussex.

Sycamore Harley-Davidson® took the 2018 national BotK crown with “Alley Rat”, an urban brawler-styled Sportster® Forty-Eight®. In the previous year, Sykes Harley-Davidson® came through as the overall winner of the UK & Ireland 2017 BotK competition with “Beach Bobber” – a customised Sportster Forty-Eight topped with beach buggy styling cues.

The competition has always showcased the very best in customisation capability and the creativity of the Custom Kings, who can be found at every Harley-Davidson® dealership globally. In 2019 the Custom King crown was taken by Laidlaw’s Harley-Davidson® with their stunning Softail® Sport Glide®-based build “FXGTS Coast Glide”.

The King of Kings grand final will use the iconic Sportster® platform as the donor for customisation. Since 1957, the Harley-Davidson® Sportster® has served as the perfect blank canvas for more custom bikes than any other. With its classic lines, characterful Evolution™ V-Twin motor and a huge selection of Genuine Harley-Davidson Parts & Accessories, building your perfect bobber, café racer, tracker or chopper is within easy reach. To further inspire competition amongst the dealers, previous competition rules surrounding budget and parts have been lifted.

King of Kings will be contested by a single round of global online voting. Votes can be cast from March 4th at www.h-d.com/customkings. The ultimate winner and 2020 King of Kings will be announced at the end of April.

Jon Bekefy, GM of Global Brand Marketing at Harley-Davidson Motor Company is already looking forward to the contest: “The Battle of the Kings has been an incredible showcase for the customisation DNA that is at the core of our brand. It inspires our dealers to show just what is possible but also inspires customers globally that they can have a truly unique motorcycle – whatever the scale of their budget. After years of fantastic competition, we can’t wait to see what the previous winners from all over the globe will build this year!”

New Harley-Davidson Softail Standard unlocks the essential cruiser experience

Milwaukee-Eight® V-Twin Performance and Lean Bobber style ready for customisation.

The new Harley-Davidson® Softail® Standard motorcycle offers the essential Harley-Davidson cruiser experience: a lean bobber profile steeped in attitude, the dynamic performance of the Harley-Davidson Softail chassis, and the unrelenting power of the Milwaukee-Eight® V-Twin powertrain. Topped with classic Vivid Black paint and highlighted with gleaming chrome and polished finishes, the Softail Standard model is a Harley-Davidson motorcycle presented in distilled form.

The contrast of black and bright components gives the Softail Standard motorcycle a look that’s both classic and minimalist. Offered only with Vivid Black painted sheet metal, the Softail Standard model is equipped with a solo seat that exposes the chopped rear fender, and a smooth, 3.5-gallon fuel tank that reveals the frame and engine. The powertrain is styled to draw attention to the centre of the motorcycle, with an all-black Milwaukee-Eight 107 engine highlighted with polished rocker, primary and timer covers. Cylinder head fins are not highlighted. A centre-bolt, round air cleaner cover further exposes the engine. With chrome shields and mufflers the 2-into-2 offset shotgun exhaust enhances the long, low profile of the Softail Standard model.

The steel rims of the classic laced wheels (19-inch front, 16-inch rear) are finished in brilliant chrome for dazzling style. The front end features clear-coated fork sliders, polished triple-clamps, polished top clamp and riser, and chromed headlamp bezel and turn signals for additional contrast to the Vivid Black paintwork. The mini-ape handlebar puts riders of the Softail Standard model in a fists-in-the-wind posture with instant attitude. A compact electronic instrument with digital display set in the handlebar riser keeps the front end clean and uncluttered.

The Solid Softail Foundation
The Harley-Davidson Softail chassis gives the Softail Standard model a solid foundation. The steel frame is optimised for stiffness and light weight. A rigid-mounted powertrain further enhances chassis stiffness. The Softail swingarm is designed to be stiff for dynamic handling and creates the look of a classic hardtail frame. Monoshock rear suspension places a coil-over shock with emulsion technology out of sight and under the seat. Suspension pre-load adjustment is accomplished by simply removing the seat to gain access to the shock body, making it easy to dial in the ride and handling for rider weight. Dual bending valve front suspension responds quickly to inputs for enhanced braking and handling performance. Front and rear disc brakes include Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS).

Milwaukee-Eight Power
The Milwaukee-Eight 107 V-Twin engine delivers inspiring performance and the look, sound and feel that is classic Harley-Davidson. Dual counter-balancers reduce primary vibration at idle for improved rider comfort. Four-valve cylinder heads provide ample airflow while advanced cylinder head design, dual knock sensors, and precision cooling allow a 10.0:1 compression ratio for strong torque output and acceleration.

A Rider’s Blank Canvas
A mid-year addition to the 2020 Harley-Davidson motorcycle line priced at £11,495/ROI €15,995, the Softail Standard model offers an attainable entry point to Harley-Davidson Big Twin ownership and is an ideal blank canvas for customisation.

New Fat Boy 30th anniversary model celebrates an icon

Harley-Davidson celebrates an icon with the introduction of the Fat Boy® 30th Anniversary motorcycle. Cloaked in dark finishes with bronze highlights and powered by a blacked-out Milwaukee-Eight® 114 engine, production of the 30th Anniversary Fat Boy will be limited to 2,500 examples, each serialised with a number plate affixed to the fuel tank console.

The Fat Boy was a perfectly outrageous name for a motorcycle that at its 1990 introduction was brilliantly bodacious.

“The Fat Boy took the look, proportions and silhouette of a 1949 Hydra Glide motorcycle and completely modernised it for a new generation of riders,” explains Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson Vice President of Styling and Design. “Those riders appreciated our post-war design DNA but also found themselves drawn to the clean simplicity of contemporary industrial design. Each of these elements was captured in the new 2018 version of the Fat Boy model. For this 30th Anniversary model we wanted to create something very special, so we leaned into the popularity of darker finishes and a limited run/serialised strategy to make the bike truly unique and exclusive.”

Fat Boy 30th Anniversary Model
The Fat Boy 30th Anniversary motorcycle celebrates the three-decade impact of the original model with a bold reinterpretation executed in dark finishes paired with a single colour option, Vivid Black. The cast-aluminium Lakester wheels are finished in Satin Black with machined highlights. The blacked-out Milwaukee-Eight 114 powertrain is finished with engine covers in gloss black and subtle bronze-tone lower rocker covers and timer cover script. The exhaust finished in a Black Onyx, a durable physical vapour deposition paint finish that reveals the underlying chrome in bright light.

A Vivid Black headlamp nacelle, handlebar and controls complete the overall dark look that is distinctive from the regular production model. A new bronze-tone waterslide Fat Boy tank logo complements the black finish and other bronze details that set the Fat Boy 30th Anniversary apart from the regular production model.

Based on the Harley-Davidson® Softail® platform launched in 2018, the Fat Boy motorcycle re-defines an icon with power and presence. The entire Fat Boy front end is massive and topped with a LED headlamp in a newly shaped nacelle. The Lakester disc aluminium wheels update that defining Fat Boy style point. The 160mm front tyre is balanced by a signature 240mm rear tyre that delivers a factory custom look.

The Softail frame and suspension combine to form a chassis that’s stiff and lightweight, for agility and performance that will exceed the expectations of the most-demanding cruiser riders. The mono-shock rear suspension preserves the signature “hard tail” lines of the Softail chassis and places a single coil-over shock absorber below the seat at the optimal angle for a smooth ride and outstanding handling. Remote hydraulic preload adjustment is accomplished by simply turning a knob located below the seat, making it easy to dial in the ride and handling for rider weight.

The Milwaukee-Eight 114 V-Twin engine, the most-powerful Softail powertrain option, delivers inspiring performance and classic Harley-Davidson look-sound-feel. The rigid-mounted powertrain further enhances chassis stiffness. Dual engine counter-balancers are tuned to reduce primary vibration at idle speed.

Dealer-installed Screamin’ Eagle® Performance Parts Stage Upgrades from Harley-Davidson® Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories are available to boost engine performance even further.

Base price for the Fat Boy 114 30th Anniversary model is £20,495 (€28,595).

Birth of an Icon
Introduced in 1989 as a 1990 model, the original Fat Boy was designed by legendary Harley-Davidson stylists Willie G. Davidson and Louie Netz and combined a fresh, contemporary look with classic Harley-Davidson styling cues. To achieve a “milled from billet” look the bike was finished in monochromatic Fine Silver Metallic with a matching powder coated frame, and rolled on aluminium disc wheels – the rear exposed by the Softail chassis – that would become the defining characteristic of the Fat Boy model. The look was beefy for the time, from the fat front tyre covered with a trimmed fender to the wide handlebar and a seven-inch headlamp in a massive chrome housing perched on a polished FL-style nacelle. Davidson designed the winged tank logo, which has been an enduring feature of the Fat Boy model.

In 1991 the Harley-Davidson Fat Boy motorcycle entered popular culture with its featured appearance in the motion picture “Terminator 2: Judgment Day,” in which actor Arnold Schwarzenegger rides a Fat Boy motorcycle through Los Angeles in a dramatic chase scene. The movie was a global sensation, helping cement the Fat Boy model as an iconic representative of the Harley-Davidson brand in many markets, especially Europe.

About That Name
Only Harley-Davidson would have the confidence to name a motorcycle Fat Boy. Here’s how it happened, according to an account by Willie G. Davidson from his book “100 Years of Harley-Davidson”:

You’re probably wondering how we came up with a name like “Fat Boy,” and I’ve heard a lot of tales about this, nearly all of which are untrue. Here’s the real story: it’s tough to come up with names that will be popular on the street. We always have to ask ourselves, “What’s the street going to name this?” and work from there. We were looking for something unusual and maybe even a little irreverent, because there’s something sort of cool about poking fun at your products from time to time. To me, and to a lot of other insiders who’d seen it, the bike had a massive “fat” look. So the folks in marketing came up with the name “Fat Boy” – and the street picked it up.

The Fat Boy model received regular styling updates until 2018, when an all-new Fat Boy model was rolled out on the reinvented Softail chassis, powered by the Milwaukee-Eight engine. The current Fat Boy model turns up the volume on all of the distinctive Fat Boy cues, from the aluminium disc wheels to the massive headlamp and nacelle. The Fat Boy remains one of the most physically imposing motorcycles in the Harley-Davidson portfolio.
