Harley-Davidson Pushes EV Technology To The Edges Of The Earth With The 2020 Livewire Motorcycle

The Harley-Davidson LiveWire® model is an exhilarating electric motorcycle that pushes the boundaries of performance, technology and design in the two-wheel world. When an opportunity presented itself to Harley-Davidson to showcase the LiveWire motorcycle’s capabilities and performance in the most extreme conditions, H-D seized the challenge for the unheralded 13,000 mile off-road trek. The process to accomplish this journey is documented through Harley-Davidson’s podcast series.

Listen to the H-D Podcast on Apple Podcasts and Spotify and subscribe to get new episodes of the show automatically each week.

This six-part series documents how near-production LiveWire models were modified to shred dirt roads, single track, and desert trails over 13,000 miles of extreme off-road conditions.

“Harley-Davidson stands for the timeless pursuit of adventure,” said Jochen Zeitz, Chairman, President and CEO, Harley-Davidson. This podcast series is a premier showcase for how Harley-Davidson’s talented staff of engineers and designers go above and beyond in their mission to create motorcycles that unlock adventures wherever they may lead. These efforts can be experienced in the 2020 LiveWire – a shining example of how Harley-Davidson innovates to lead in the electrification of motorcycling. It’s an experience that can only be truly understood after riding it.”

Utilising the same talented Harley-Davidson engineers and designers that developed the LiveWire motorcycle, a select group was assembled from the broader development team to modify near-production LiveWire models to complete the journey.

Together, this team designed, modified, and assembled a motorcycle in under 30 days. After initial testing, the team incorporated feedback to finalise ergonomic and storage systems on the bikes. In 60 days, the motorcycles were headed to the southern tip of Argentina.

The modified LiveWire motorcycles used production specification RESS (Rechargeable Energy Storage System) hardware, chassis, and Harley-Davidson Revelation™ powertrain components.  In addition, the motorcycles were modified with prototype rotors, wheels, and tyres from the upcoming Harley-Davidson Pan America™ adventure touring motorcycle, and custom windshield, rear shock, and triple clamps made specifically for this project.

Before delivery, both modified LiveWire motorcycles were evaluated at Harley-Davidson’s Willie G. Davidson Product Development Center for initial testing and ridden under similar development validation conditions at Harley-Davidson’s Proving Grounds facility.

In recent weeks, the LiveWire has been put through its paces closer to home with hundreds of UK customers getting to grips with the electric machine as part of a LiveWire Tour at specialist Harley-Davidson UK EV dealers. Riders and non-riders have tried out the motorcycle on the innovative Jumpstart® rolling road with most licence holders choosing to extend the experience with a full demo ride.

There’s just one opportunity left to book limited slots on the LiveWire Tour at Leeds Harley-Davidson® on Saturday 3rd October, but for those who miss out, you can still experience the thrill and seamless acceleration of the motorcycle at the centre of the adventure, with a pre-booked test ride at an authorised, specialist LiveWire Harley-Davidson® dealership near you.

Harley-Davidson LiveWire Motorcycle Sets New World Records at EV Racing Exhibition

Angelle Sampey and LiveWire establish E.T. records for a Production Electric Motorcycle.

A Harley-Davidson® LiveWire® motorcycle set all-new records for elapsed time and top speed by an electric-powered production motorcycle on a drag racing course on 4th September. Harley-Davidson™ Screamin’ Eagle™/Vance & Hines rider and three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion, Angelle Sampey stepped off her Harley-Davidson FXDR™ Pro Stock competition motorcycle to pilot the LiveWire bike to capture world record-breaking runs on the quarter and eighth-mile, covering the eighth-mile distance in 7.017 seconds and the full quarter-mile course in just 11.156 seconds at 110.35 mph. The 2020 LiveWire motorcycle’s top speed is limited to 110 mph.

The records were set during exhibition runs at the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA U.S. Nationals at the Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis. This is another great pass at a bold future In Harley-Davidson’s quest to lead the electrification of motorcycles.

“Let me tell you what’s amazing,” said Sampey. “That was the first time I rode the LiveWire. I could not wait to get it on the track. The LiveWire is so easy to ride. Just twist the throttle and go, and you really go!”

Sampey and her Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle/Vance & Hines teammates, Andrew Hines and Ed Krawiec, made a number of head-to-head drag race runs on stock LiveWire models, with Sampey posting the quickest times. Sampey is the winningest female in motorsports history with three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle championships (2000-2002) and 43 Pro Stock motorcycle wins.

The Harley-Davidson LiveWire motorcycle is an all-new, all-electric model designed to offer riders a thrilling and high-performance motorcycling experience infused with a new level of technology, and the premium look and feel of a Harley-Davidson product. The LiveWire motorcycle is capable of rapid acceleration with just a twist of the throttle – no clutching or gear shifting required.

As Sampey proved at Indy, the instant torque provided by the H-D Revelation™ powertrain delivers exhilarating acceleration from a stop; the LiveWire motorcycle can rush from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 kph) in 3.0 seconds and 60 to 80 mph (100 to 129 kph) in 1.9 seconds. Because maximum torque is always on tap, roll-on acceleration for passing from any speed is outstanding. An optimised centre of gravity, rigid aluminium frame and premium adjustable suspension components give the LiveWire motorcycle dynamic handling. With up to 146 miles of range*, performance is optimised for the urban street-rider.

The H-D Revelation™ electric powertrain produces minimal vibration, very little heat, and minimal sound, all of which enhance rider comfort and creates a unique riding experience, even on the drag strip.

Licensed riders can take a complimentary test ride on the LiveWire motorcycle at select Authorised LiveWire Harley-Davidson® dealerships.

Harley-Davidson Re-Launches The Enthusiast Magazine

Harley-Davidson is re-launching The Enthusiast™ magazine as a print and digital magazine designed to showcase motorcycle culture and the riding lifestyle through the lens of the Harley-Davidson brand. Originally published by Harley-Davidson from 1916 to 2008, The Enthusiast magazine will replace HOG® Magazine as the official publication of Harley-Davidson Motor Company and will become more widely available through other distribution channels.

“This is the return to a great tradition,” said Jochen Zeitz, Harley-Davidson President and CEO. “We believe today The Enthusiast title is more relevant than ever. In a year when so many people have been stuck inside, we passionately believe in inspiring riders and aspiring riders to get out in the world to rediscover adventure through socially-distanced riding.”

The first new issue of The Enthusiast magazine is available this week with a cover story featuring Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman, stars of the new Apple Original series “Long Way Up,” premiering Friday, September 18 on Apple TV+. The series follows the epic motorcycle adventure McGregor and Boorman experienced on a 13,000-mile journey aboard two Harley-Davidson® LiveWire® electric motorcycles through South America, Central America and Mexico.

Printed four times annually, with a circulation of more than 500,00 print copies in the United States plus 150,000 copies internationally, The Enthusiast magazine is the most broadly circulated motorcycle magazine in the world. First published by Harley-Davidson in 1916, The Enthusiast magazine was among the first consumer motorcycle magazines in print, although Germany’s Motorrad (1903), Italy’s Motociclismo (1914), and Motorcyclist magazine (1909) in the United States preceded it.

From 1984 until 2008, Harley-Davidson produced two separate publications for owners and riders, The Enthusiast magazine and HOG Tales magazine. In 2009 they were merged under the HOG Magazine title into one new magazine that drew content inspiration from both publications.

With the movement of Motorcyclist to a digital format in 2018, the Enthusiast magazine, including the HOG Magazine years, remains the oldest continuously printed motorcycle magazine in the United States.

All Full and Life Harley Owner Group® members will continue to receive a complimentary subscription to The Enthusiast magazine as part of their membership benefits. Harley-Davidson is also exploring new ways to deliver the print magazine in the United States, including by selling single copies of the magazine on the H-D® eCommerce site and through limited retail establishments, including at Harley-Davidson dealerships and select boutique motorcycle shops. For more information and history about The Enthusiast magazine, visit h-d.com/enthusiast.

Documentary starring Ewan McGregor would take motorcycle industry into another level

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman made two documentaries Long Way Around and Long Way Down about their travels with motorcycles. The title of the new documentary is Long Way Up since the couple rides from the capital of Tierra del Fuego Ushuaia in Argentina, which is the southernmost point of South America, to Mexico. The pair rides 13,000 miles, crossing 13 countries in 100 days. The fascinating thing about this documentary is that McGregor and Boorman ride Harley-Davidson LiveWire electric motorcycles instead of all-terrain ADV. David Alexanian and Russ Malkin, the directors of the film, will follow McGregor and Boorman with trucks and SUVs powered with batteries made by Rivian. Argentina, Peru, Ecuador, Columbia, Chile, and Mexico are just a couple of countries they will cross.

The Long Way Up’s Electric Adventure Concludes In L.A

Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman with the crew of Long Way Up had a private wrap-up party at the Harley Davidson center in LA after finishing the shooting. Some people did not welcome the idea of the pair to switch to electric motorcycles. However, it gives the film a different twist and is a good promotion for the Harley Davidson electric bike as well as generally for the electric bikes. Apparently, Charley Boorman said that the charging process was not all that bad. They managed to charge their bikes from the local population throughout South America and once they crossed the border between the US and Mexico they managed to cover 300 miles a day because it was easier to charge the bikes fast in the United States. How the pair decided on the route, the countries, and everything else we will probably find out from the movie that will arrive on Apple Tv September 18th.

Harley-Davidson LiveWire Tour is Go

Harley-Davidson UK & Ireland LiveWire® Tour goes live to showcase the highlights and advantages of owning a premium all-electric motorcycle.

Starting on 5th September, for the next five weeks, Harley-Davidson UK is introducing a LiveWire Tour to visit specialist Harley-Davidson Livewire® dealerships across the length of the UK. The LiveWire Tour consists of a specially built exhibition unit that houses a Harley-Davidson Jumpstart® unit with a specially developed rolling road that allows riding simulation.

The tour is designed to enable motorcycle licence holders and non-licence holders to see, ride and appreciate what it’s like to ride a Harley-Davidson LiveWire without covering any distance on public roads. It is a simple case of ‘start and ride’ to experience the performance of the all-new H-D Revelation™ permanent-magnet electric motor and discover a vast suite of electronic riding aids.

Licence holders full motorcycle entitlement who want to extend their experience of the machine can then put the LiveWire through its paces on a standard test ride by booking in advance with the dealership that is hosting their event.

With the onset of ever-tightening emissions regulations, the placement of viable alternatives to normally-aspirated engine power is rapidly gaining ground. In late 2019, Harley-Davidson took the initiative and became the first major motorcycle manufacturer to release an all-electric motorcycle, LiveWire®.

To date, the Harley-Davidson LiveWire has received major attention and rave reviews from the media – from motorcycle and automotive titles through to technology specialists – which have been echoed by the first LiveWire customers in the UK. Now it’s the turn of everyone else – from motorcyclists to fans of modern transport – to see, try and enjoy the merits of LiveWire; a premium brand, electric-powered, performance motorcycle.

The LiveWire Tour will be manned to ensure a fuss-free Jumpstart ride and, in conjunction with staff at the hosting Harley-Davidson dealership, all customer queries and advice on OLEV grants can be answered.

OLEV Grants Enhance Harley-davidson Livewire as The Ideal Commuter Solution

LiveWire 2018

The zero CO2 emissions motorcycle is now eligible for EVHS grant.

As commuters continue to seek cost-effective and social distanced alternatives to public transport, the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) has reduced some of the cost barriers associated with electric motorcycles. The changes further highlight the benefits of two-wheeled electric vehicles as sustainable options.

OLEV approved low-emissions motorcycles benefit from an additional government incentive “plug-in” grant of 20% of the initial purchase price, up to a maximum of £1,500. In the case of LiveWire® customers, the £1,500 grant is automatically deducted from the list purchase price at time of sale by the supplying Harley-Davidson® dealership.

Customers who are VAT registered and business users can also claim back the 20% VAT associated with business or promotional use purchases.

In addition, the latest OLEV announcements introduced a 12-month continuation of the ‘electric vehicle homecharge scheme’ (EVHS) and the official list of eligible plug-in electric-only cars and vans was also amended to include large electric motorcycles. This means that the electric Harley-Davidson® LiveWire® motorcycle is now eligible for a £350 grant towards the cost of purchasing and installing a dedicated home chargepoint unit.

Plus, the OLEV funded grant is available to places of work under the Workplace Charging Scheme to encourage more employees to go electric in the future.

With dedicated ‘chargepoint’ units, a higher-powered charge is delivered for faster charging and, used in conjunction with a low-economy electricity tariff, enables LiveWire running costs to be reduced.

For further information on the Harley-Davidson LiveWire please visit the dedicated LiveWire pages or contact your local dealer.

To further highlight the benefits of motorcycling in today’s new normal, the biking industry has launched unlockyourfreedom.co.uk to deliver essential information on how to start out on two wheels, from gaining motorcycle licence entitlement to training and much more.

Harley-Davidson to showcase key new models and technology at Motorcycle Live 2019

The first-ever UK appearance of two exciting Harley-Davidson®  prototype models await visitors to this year’s Motorcycle Live show at Birmingham’s NEC, 16-24 November. Featuring the all-new Revolution® Max engine, the Harley-Davidson® Pan America™ and Harley-Davidson® Bronx™ 975 will take centre stage on the Harley-Davidson exhibition stand (2D15, Hall 2).

Both bikes, earmarked for launch in 2020, debuted recently at EICMA International Motorcycle Show to much acclaim. The adventure bike and streetfighter form an integral part of the Harley-Davidson More Roads strategy to extend the iconic brand into key new motorcycling segments and introduce the brand to a new breed of Harley-Davidson riders.

They will share the stage with the all-electric Harley-Davidson® LiveWire™. Show-goers will be able to sample the LiveWire instant acceleration (0-60mph in three seconds) and precise throttle control care of the Revelation® electric motor and its seamless torque delivery on our Jumpstart™ rolling road.

The all-new MY20 Softail® Low Rider® S completes the new model line-up on the Harley® stand. The brand’s latest reinvention of the performance-cruiser with Milwaukee-Eight® 114ci (1868cc) engine promises to turn heads.

The latest technology from Harley-Davidson is also on show in the form of key 2020 Touring modelsequipped with the new H-D™ Connect service, which enables remote connection to the motorcycle through a Harley-Davidson™ App for smartphones. It uses built-in cellular connectivity and GPS to keep you in the know with bike status, notifications and alerts. The Touring machines also showcase the latest rider-safety technology; highlights of which include Reflex™ Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS), a new collection of technology designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking. The systems are designed to aid the rider in controlling the vehicle while accelerating and braking in a straight line or while in a turn. The systems are a perfect aid when riding in adverse road conditions and in urgent situations.

Custom enthusiasts are also catered for with a range of Sportster® and Dark Custom™ motorcycles to provide the ideal blank canvas inspiration for winter bike build projects.

And non-riders, who can benefit from a free Motorcycle Live ticket this year, will have the chance to talk learning to ride and motorcycle tests with 22-year-old rally driver, TV presenter and Red Bull athlete, Catie Munnings, who passed her test through the Harley-Davidson Passport to Freedom campaign this year. Until 31 December this year, new riders who passed their full motorcycle test in January 2018 or after can still benefit from the Passport to Freedom refund of training and licence costs up to the value of £1000 against the purchase of a new Harley-Davidson. Catie will be on the stand between 11am and 3pm on Tuesday 19 November to talk about her experience of learning to ride and answer questions from people interested in getting on to two wheels.
