Desmosedici Stradale: a V4 for the Ducati sport bikes of tomorrow

Out of the experience gained in MotoGP, where the 4-cylinder Desmosedici unleashes incomparable performance, comes a new 90° V4 engine designed to power the Ducati supersport models of tomorrow. In transferring the technology of its most cutting-edge power unit from racetrack to road, Ducati offers customers performance levels honed by years of MotoGP experience.

Called the Desmosedici Stradale, this engine is set to become yet another Ducati milestone: it will be the first time ever that the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer has equipped a standard production bike with a 4-cylinder engine.

The official unveiling took place in Misano during the San Marino and Rimini Riviera GP, the thirteenth round of the 2017 MotoGP championship. A perfectly natural setting for the presentation, as MotoGP is the proving ground from which the new engine has drawn experience, technology and grit.

“It’s with undiluted pride that we unveil this technological gem. It represents the start of a new chapter for our company, underlining our vitality and an unshakeable commitment to investment in new products”, stated Claudio Domenicali, Ducati’s CEO, during the presentation of the Desmosedici Stradale. “This engine also highlights the close collaboration between Ducati Corse and the factory bike development team, proving just how instrumental racing can be in developing the technology that is later applied on production bikes. In November, at EICMA, we’ll be showcasing the new Panigale V4, an all-new motorcycle powered by this extraordinary engine”.

While the Desmosedici Stradale engine is undoubtedly suited to the track, it has also been designed to respond to the needs of the road rider. For example, to maximise mid-range torque – essential for a satisfying road experience – and ensure punchy torque and power at lower revs, the engine has a slightly larger displacement than its MotoGP counterpart (1103 cm³, to be precise). Power output from the Euro 4 compliant engine configuration exceeds 155 kW (210 hp) at 13,000 rpm while maximum torque exceeds 120 Nm (12.2 Kgm) from 8,750 to 12,250 rpm.

An R version with a displacement of less than 1000 cc – which revs higher and is intended more for track use – is currently at the advanced development stage. This will provide the foundation for the homologated version that competes in the Superbike championship, where this engine will be used starting in 2019 (one year on from the launch of the respective road version, as per the Ducati tradition).

As on the Ducati bikes used in racing, the crankshaft is of the counter-rotating type. This reduces the overall gyroscopic effect and makes the bike faster and more agile when changing direction.

The crank pins, offset at 70° as on the Desmosedici GP, involve a Twin Pulse firing sequence that generates easy-to-handle power delivery and optimises out-of-the-corner traction (“Big Bang” effect). This firing sequence also gives the Desmosedici Stradale a unique signature sound.
A 90° V4 configuration makes the engine extremely compact, allowing centralisation of mass and smoothing incorporation on the vehicle. The Desmosedici Stradale has, in fact, been inserted on the motorcycle with the front cylinders banked 42° back from the horizontal, just like the Ducati engines employed in MotoGP. This, of course, optimises weight distribution, allows the adoption of larger radiators and brings the swingarm pivot point forwards.
Its architecture also evens up first order forces naturally without the added weight and power loss that a balancing countershaft would involve.

As in MotoGP, the engine was designed with an 81 mm cylinder bore. This measurement reflects the maximum limit allowed by MotoGP rules; it’s also the highest in the 4-cylinder supersport segment.
Using the same bore as the Desmosedici GP engine means both power units share nearly identical in-engine fluid dynamics (i.e. on valves, intake ducts and throttle bodies, right where the power is produced).

Needless to say, the new engine is designed around the Desmodromic system, a key characteristic that helps make Ducati prototypes the fastest in MotoGP. On this high-revving engine the “Desmo” system achieves a degree of sophistication, lightness and compactness never before seen on a Ducati.

Variable-height air intake horns constitute another first for a Ducati factory bike, optimising cylinder intake across the rev range and giving significant advantages in terms of power delivery and handling. Completing the fuelling system are the oval throttle bodies, each equipped with two injectors: one above the butterfly and one below it.

This package of cutting-edge technical solutions – absolutely unique within the Supersport segment – makes the Desmosedici Stradale an engine like no other in the motorcycle world.

Main technical data:
  • 1,103 cm³ 4-cylinder 90-degree V
  • Bore x stroke 81 x 53.5 mm
  • Compression ratio 14:1
  • Maximum power exceeds 210 hp at 13,000 rpm

Valentino Rossi dedicates his AGV helmet to a Grand Sporting Champ!

,

IN WHAT HAS NOW BECOME A TRADITION, THE AGV PISTA GP R HELMET OF ROSSI FOR THE SATURDAY MORNING QUALIFYING SESSIONS FOR THE ITALIAN MOTORCYCLE GRAND PRIX HELD IN MUGELLO, SPORT SPECIAL CELEBRATORY DESIGNS. DESIGNER ALDO DRUDI TRANSFORMS THEIR HEARTFELT TRIBUTES TO THE LATE NICKY HAYDEN AND TO ITALY INTO ART.

Bright colours, the green turf of a football field, the blue eyes of the Champion of Tavullia who, in a brand new footballer version in a light blue jersey of the Italian national team bearing number 46, exclaims “Mo’ je faccio er cucchiaio” (the “cucchiaio” or “spoon” being a specific type of penalty kick), as he stands, ready in front of the goalkeeper to score a goal. This expression, spouted in an unmistakeable Roman dialect, reveals Rossi’s sporting dedication to Francesco Totti, the icon Italian football player who played the very last match of his fantastic career with the team A.S. Roma last week. With the Italian flag in the background, the tribute continues on the back of the helmet where, under the 58 of Marco Simoncelli, the phrase “One captain… There’s only one captain!” appears, another iconic quote taking directly from the chants dedicated to Totti by his Roman fans. A plaster drawn on the front is an attempt by The Doctor to poke fun at himself, a funny reminder of his misadventure during training a few days ago which put his participation in the Italian GP at risk.

On the sides of the chin strap, the number 46 is joined by 69, the number of the great Nicky Hayden forming a single, dual-tone 469. The AGV shield, which has accompanied Valentino for more than 20 years in each of his wins, is positioned on the side and completed by the words “Mugello 2017”.

A perfect combination of protection, performance and comfort, the Pista GP R is the result of AGV Extreme Standards, an innovative integrated design protocol that revolutionises the design process, allowing for a significant and demonstrable improvement in helmet performance in terms of its protection against impact, peripheral vision, compact design, reduced weight, aerodynamics, ventilation and ergonomics. The innovative AGV Extreme Standards process raises the bar in terms of technology in helmet research and development, and represents a milestone in head protection systems.

The replica helmet (in limited edition of 2500 pieces) will be available from December 2017 as a Pista GP R model, priced at £1100 SRP . Now available to order, refer to your local AGV dealer for more details.

The limited edition will bear the same graphics as Valentino’s helmet, with the exception of other sponsors’ logos and the visor components and accessories.

The Pista GP R, an evolution of the innovative Pista GP, the MotoGP helmet, is the most protective helmet ever to be developed. Thanks to the introduction of Race 3 Max Pinlock®, a Class 1 Optic visor with 100% Max Vision Pinlock® (120), and the patented Visor Lock System (VLS) fastening, the full carbon AGV Pista GP R helmet offers an unbeatable field of vision. The new wind-tunnel-tested “Biplano” spoiler, guarantees optimum aerodynamic performance, while comfort levels benefit from a patented interior structure and an Integrated Ventilation System IVS). Renthal Recalls Clip-on Handlebars due to potential cracking risk

Renthal announces a worldwide recall of two models of its Clip-on Handlebars as part of their commitment to customer safety.

One of the World’s largest handlebar manufacturers has identified the potential of ‘Stress Corrosion Cracking’ in two models (Gen 1 and Gen 2 versions) of its Clip-on Handlebars. In total Renthal have received 22 reports of cracking, with no injuries reported.

Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) is defined as a corrosion attack which can occur under the simultaneous influence of mechanical “tensile” stresses and a corrosive environment. The presence of only one of these factors does not induce crack propagation but when combined they occasionally can.

The latest generation of Clip-On clamps are made from a different grade of material which offers superior resistance to SCC and allows the clamps to exceed Renthal’s new generation tests and requirements.

In this company instigated recall, customers are encouraged to send in their Clip-On’s and handlebars to be supplied a new Clip-On Handlebar set, complete with grips. The easy to use system features postage free collection and delivery.

Renthal has created dedicated Web pages to the Recall, with customer information on identifying the relevant specific products, a comprehensive FAQ page and crucial information on returning the handlebars. The full Recall area can be accessed at www.renthal.com/clipon-return

Renthal is also publicising the Recall as widely as possible through its worldwide distributor network, motorcycle media and its own social media feeds.

This commitment to safety and customer satisfaction reflects the long-standing principles of this British company, founded in 1969 by motorcycle and engineering enthusiasts Andrew Renshaw and Henry Rosenthal.

With 193 World Titles and counting alongside prestigious OEM customers including Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki and KTM, Renthal has always been at the forefront of R&D and innovative technology.

Rees Williams, Renthal Commercial Director, commented, “We are committed to informing as many of our customers as possible of this recall, whilst making it as easy as possible for them to return and receive new products. Renthal has a strong reputation for high quality and customer service, two attributes we feel are in line with this self-instigated recall.”

Triumph Motorcycles – Test Ride to Win bespoke Rega turntable

Triumph Motorcycles – Test Ride to Win bespoke Rega turntable 1One of only two Bonneville Street Cup-inspired Rega record players up for grabs as part of new Triumph Motorcycles promotion

Triumph Motorcycles will give away a bespoke record player, created in partnership with legendary British turntable maker Rega, as part of a new test ride promotion.

Inspired by the café racer leanings of Triumph’s Street Cup model, the turntable was unveiled on Tuesday night alongside an exclusive vinyl album at a closed-door gig attended by 200 specially invited guests.

The record deck and vinyl album, pressed by music partner Flying Vinyl, were created to celebrate the iconic heritage of Triumph’s Street family of bikes.

Now one of the decks will be handed to one lucky rider who books a test ride on one of Triumph’s modern classics during the month of September.

At Tuesday’s event, held at The Bike Shed in Shoreditch, the iconic British motorcycle brand displayed some of its Street family of bikes, including the Street Twin, Bonneville T100 and Street Scrambler.

But it was the Street Cup, with its roots firmly in the café racer culture of the ‘60s that typically came with a rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack, that took centre stage.

Among the guests at the gig were fans invited by Triumph’s partners, as well as the brand’s own social channels, plus motorcycle and music press.

Entertaining the crowd were three of the rising British rock bands that featured on the vinyl album – Bloody Knees, the Bay Rays and The Jar Family. In total, 10 up-and-coming young bands feature on the vinyl, of which only 500 numbered copies were pressed.

Triumph GB general manager, Paul Lilly, said: “Triumph’s history includes a rich pedigree in the British café racer scene inspiring models in the modern embodiment of that element of our story.

“So it has been great to celebrate that heritage and support some exciting new British bands in the process.

“Hopefully we have been able to not only give some home-grown talent some much-deserved visibility but inspired people to get on one of our stylish modern classics at the same time.”

Team Classic Suzuki welcomes Carl Cox Motorsport onboard ahead of Classic TT

Team Classic Suzuki is gearing up for this year’s Classic TT on the Isle of Man, and welcomes onboard new sponsor Carl Cox Motorsport ahead of the island’s Festival of Motorcycling.

Michael Dunlop returns with the team, looking to defend his Classic TT Superbike title onboard his XR69, while former Grand Prix ace, Danny Webb, who stood in for an injured Lee Johnston at last year’s event, also returns.

Johnston, however, will return to the Classic TT in Team Classic Suzuki colours this year, making it a three-pronged attack for the team in the hotly-contested Superbike class.

Carl Cox Motorsport will also step up its involvement with Team Classic Suzuki, after joining forces for the Bikers’ Classic at Spa earlier this year. Carl Cox – who already has a personal sponsorship deal in place with Dunlop – is no stranger to classic Suzukis, and has a fleet of early GSX-R750s, 1100s, and Katanas, that regularly race at the Phillip Island Classic and Festival of Speed, while a TT-racing sidecar outfit that also operates under the Carl Cox Motorsport banner is Suzuki-powered. The world-famous DJ himself has also just taken delivery of a new GSX-R1000R.

Steve Wheatman, Team Classic Suzuki team principal, said,
“As always we’re really excited to be going back to the Classic TT. It’s a truly special event, and we all love seeing the classic racers going round this famous island. This year we’re coming back with three riders. Michael’s been with us for some years now, we won the Superbike race with him last year, so the aim has got to be to try and replicate that this year. We know he’s capable, we’ve just got to give him a bike that’s capable, too, which we’re confident we can do. Last year Lee missed the event but was supposed to be riding for us, so it’s great to be able to welcome him back to the fold. But deputising for Lee last year was Danny, who really impressed us with his attitude and his performance in the race, despite a little technical issue that probably prevented him from showing his full potential, so we wanted to make a bike available for him again this year.

“This year we’re also going there with a new partnership with Carl Cox Motorsport. Carl and all of the team there live and breathe motorcycles and motorcycle racing, and it’s great to be able to get involved with their project. They are already very involved in the racing of classic Suzukis, and we’re hoping that, with their support, we can have not only a successful Classic TT, but a successful, longer-term partnership.”

Carl Cox added, “It’s absolutely amazing to be part of this year’s Team Classic Suzuki Isle of Man campaign – it’s an incredible lineup on some of the most well prepared and stunning bikes in the business. With our involvement in racing and racing our own classic Suzukis in Australia and a great relationship with Michael Dunlop, being able to support him and the rest of the team at the Classic TT is a very exciting opportunity for us to be involved in.”

The opening practice session for Team Classic Suzuki is scheduled to take place on Saturday 19 August.

An Impressive Set of High-Performance Exhaust Systems for the Suzuki GSX-R1000

Akrapovič has launched a new range of high-performance parts for the Suzuki GSX-R1000 all designed to make this iconic sports bike an even better performer and to take the look and sound to greater heights.

This new range features products designed to suit all tastes and demands. From entry-level Slip-On Line mufflers – which are the first step in exhaust tuning – to full race-inspired systems, including the lightest full system, this new collection is beautifully designed and manufactured with a firm eye on performance, lightweight construction, and of course that signature Akrapovič sound.

Top-of-the-range is the brand-new Evolution Line (Titanium). Constructed from high-grade ultra-lightweight titanium, this stunning system is the lightest Akrapovič complete exhaust system for the 2017 GSX-R1000, weighing just 4.4 kg – which is over 57% lighter than the stock system. Its distinctive shape was developed especially for the Suzuki GSX-R1000 based on Akrapovič’s vast racing experience. With power and torque gains through the whole rpm range, adding over 10 hp at 9,000 rpm and more than 9 Nm at 7,600 rpm, this system is the best Akrapovič exhaust upgrade for performance. With its deep, true racing sound that is perfectly tuned to match the increased performance, this is a pure racing upgrade for the GSX-R1000 machines.

The other full system in the range is the Racing Line (Titanium), designed and constructed with the same attention to detail as the Evolution Line system, but using stainless-steel headers.

Akrapovič has also included two Slip-On Line mufflers in the series, both serious performance upgrades in their own right. The EC and ECE type-approved Slip-On Line (Carbon) features the distinctive hexagonal type design that Akrapovič is famed for. Made from lightweight titanium, with a carbon-fibre outer sleeve, endcap, and heatshield, this muffler looks fantastic and produces a characteristic Akrapovič sound with a deeper tone.

The Slip-On Line (Titanium) is a Grand Prix–inspired design. Its short and sporty appearance is perfectly in keeping with the bike’s lines. Constructed from high-grade ultra-lightweight titanium, which provides a 70% weight savings over the stock muffler, this is an exhaust that certainly is serious. The stunning soundtrack gives a pure sense of racing and total exhilaration – it is an exhaust purely aimed at track use.

To further enhance the performance of the Slip-On Line exhausts, Akrapovič has launched an optional header in stainless steel, which when fitted will turn the Slip-On Line into a complete system.

With this new collection of Akrapovič products for the Suzuki GSX-R1000, the Slovenian high-performance premier exhaust system manufacturer has developed a wide range of mufflers and complete systems, plus the opportunity to upgrade with optional headers, to suit a wide variety of tastes, desires, and requirements. These are certainly performance parts that show Akrapovič’s dedication to providing the best solutions through innovation and from its racing heritage and race-proven materials, all combined with the stunning Akrapovič soundtrack.

Classic time for Avon Tyres at the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling

Avon Tyres heads back across the Irish Sea, to the Isle of Man, for the late-summer leg of the Island’s motorcycling celebrations – the Festival of Motorcycling.

There are two major parts to the Festival – the Classic TT races and the Manx Grand Prix, both of which will see Avon playing an important role.

Avon Tyres has an incredible history at Mona’s Isle, including setting the first 100mph lap with Bob McIntyre on a four-cylinder Gilera in 1957. Avon’s wide range of classic race tyres means the British manufacturer is likely to be once again claiming the top step of the podium a number of times over the festival fortnight

Avon’s AM26 and AM22 Roadrider classic racing rubber will be fitted to the majority of the competitors’ bikes in the 350 and 500 Classic races. Meanwhile, the new Avon Storm Endurance race tyres, which took victory at the Spa Classic Legends Endurance race earlier this summer, are available to riders in the Manx Grand Prix.

The Spa Classic 4 Hour race, held at the end of June, is year-on-year a highlight of the classic racing season, with teams entering from across Europe. Avon supplied its Storm Endurance race tyres to several teams, including Neate Racing’s Steven and John Neate and Bob Collins, and the Team Classic Suzuki outfit, with riders Guy Martin and Pete Boast. Neate Racing won the Spa Classic, with the Suzuki Katana finishing in seventh.

Avon’s motorcycle motorsport manager, Steve Smith, said, “We’re expecting all the star riders to be using Avon tyres for the 350 and 500cc races at the festival this weekend, so we’re hoping for a clean sweep of the podium in the Junior and Senior Classic TT races.

“At the Manx GP, we’re aiming for a third consecutive win in the Supertwin race after victories from Rob Hodson in 2015 and his brother, Jamie, last year, who will be sorely missed.

“It is with great sadness that we learnt of the loss of Jamie Hodson. It was a pleasure to work with him during the 2016 season that culminated in his superb win at the Manx GP in the Supertwin race. Jamie was a true gentleman and also a very talented rider.”

As well as the racing, there are a number of classic bike highlights away from the competition this weekend, with parade laps from Michael Dunlop on the Bob McIntyre replica Gilera and Steve Plater on the Team Obsolete six-cylinder 250cc Honda. Both of these legendary machines will be running on Avon tyres.

The Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling runs from 19 August – 01 September, with the full schedule available at http://www.iomfom.com.

Suzuki Ride to the British Grand Prix at Silverstone with Kevin Schwantz

Suzuki is giving fans the chance to ride to the British Grand Prix with Kevin Schwantz on Friday 25 August, as the 1993 500cc Grand Prix world champion makes his way to the Silverstone circuit for the weekend’s action.

Schwantz will be at the Super Sausage cafe on the A5 near Towcester for a typical English breakfast from 8:30am, before riding on to the British round of the 2017 MotoGP season at Silverstone at 9am, where Suzuki will have a dedicated bike park.

While at the Grand Prix, fan-favourite Schwantz will spend plenty of time on the Suzuki display stand, meeting fans and signing autographs, as well as firing up his world championship-winning RGV500 at various points throughout the weekend.

The Texan, who is officially a MotoGP legend, will also enjoy the MotoGP race from the Suzuki fan stand – with tickets still available – which will be located on the outside of Copse corner.

Kevin Schwantz, “I’m looking forward to attending the British Grand Prix at Silverstone and watching some good racing from the Suzuki stand. The British fans were always among the best, so it’s going to be great to see everyone and also to get to ride to the track on Friday together. And being reunited with some of my old race bikes which are still here in England and firing them up will be quite special as well; there is nothing like the sound of a two-stroke.”

The British Grand Prix will take place at Silverstone from 25-27 August. For more information and Suzuki fan stand tickets, click here and select ‘prices’, followed by ‘fan grandstands’.

Suzuki confirms pricing for new Suzuki V-Strom 250

Suzuki has confirmed pricing for the hotly-anticipated V-Strom 250, with the newest addition to Suzuki’s adventure range coming with a launch RRP of £4,599 when it arrives in dealerships in October.

The V-Strom 250 boasts Suzuki’s frugal-yet-punchy 248cc parallel twin engine, delivering 23.4Nm of torque at 6,500rpm, with peak power of 25PS delivered at 8,000rpm. However, the new V-Strom’s trump card is its efficiency, with the twin cylinder engine capable of achieving 88.28mpg.

Designed to excel on the urban commute as well as a continental adventure, the V-Strom 250 gets a useful, full LCD dash, displaying a fuel gauge, average fuel consumption, gear position indicator, two trip meters, odometer, oil change notification, tacho, speedo, and a clock.

Adding protection from the elements on longer journeys is an extensively wind tunnel-tested screen and bodywork, while adding practicality is a range of accessories, including three-piece luggage, hand guards, and centre stand.

Triumph taps into rock ‘n’ roll heritage with special edition vinyl and turntable

Iconic British motorcycle manufacturer, Triumph, has created its own vinyl record and turntable, inspired by the rock ‘n’ roll heritage of its Street Family of bikes.

The record deck, made in conjunction with legendary British maker, Rega, takes its inspiration directly from the Street Cup model, which is a modern-day street racer harking back to the café racer machines of the 1960s.

Adorned with a line drawing of the £8,800, 900cc Street Cup and finished in the bike’s signature Racing Yellow paint colour, the turntable is as meticulously engineered as the Triumph motorcycle itself.

Meanwhile the vinyl album, pressed by Triumph music partner Flying Vinyl, is entitled ‘Racing the Record’ as a nod to the original 1960s café racer practice of selecting a record on a café’s jukebox and racing to a predetermined point and back before the song had ended.

Both the turntable and vinyl album will make their public debuts at a launch evening on Tuesday, August 29, at London’s The Bike Shed, where a handful of the featured bands will provide live entertainment.

Tickets for the event, which will run from 6.30pm – 11pm, will be limited and a select few will win their place at the party via Triumph’s social media channels.

Rega’s Triumph turntable is fitted with a hand-assembled, precision-built RB110 tonearm, a low-vibration, low-noise 24v motor assembly driving a precision bearing and 10mm float glass platter fitted with a custom-printed plinth and mat.

Just like the Street Cup it reflects, the turntable is minimalist in design, omitting unnecessary gimmicks in favour of quality and performance.

Only two have been made and for a chance to win one, you should keep an eye on Triumph’s social media channels – Facebook and Twitter.

In keeping with the rock ‘n’ roll nature of the café racer culture, Triumph selected 10 up-and-coming British rock bands to submit two tracks each for the special edition album, of which just 500 will be made.

Each band has one track on the record, with the songs selected by Triumph’s fans, who voted for their favourites on Facebook.

Triumph Motorcycles GB general manager, Paul Lilly, said: “Rock ‘n’ roll music was a major part of the café racer culture back in the 1960s. In fact, the music that played on the jukeboxes of the cafes these enthusiasts frequented even forms part of the scene’s folklore.

“Our Street family of motorcycles has been built with fun and accessible rideability in mind and the Street Cup in particular is a modern-day street racer inspired by the café racers of old. It is fitting that we are now taking the Street Family back to its roots by creating our own record and turntable.”

The stunning Street Cup combines this minimalism with contemporary finishes, while a host of urban sports features such as an authentic bullet seat and removable café racer seat cowl complete the look.

Dynamic urban sport-focused ergonomics deliver an engaging riding position and smooth, agile handling characteristics. Meanwhile, the Bonneville engine is perfectly tuned for both blasting around town or escaping it all on twisty B-roads.

Excitingly, the Street Cup is available with an A2 licence kit, meaning it is accessible even to riders who do not yet hold a full licence.

Ducati Superleggera Superbike Experience: an exclusive event with “official” desmodromic thrills

A day at the world-class Mugello race track riding three mind-blowing Ducati bikes: 1299 Panigale S, 1299 Panigale Superleggera and Panigale R SBK, the official bikes ridden by Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri. A dream that could only come true with Ducati. A unique experience dedicated to all 500 purchasers of the stunning Superleggera, sold out before it even went into production.
A special gift, an invitation taken up by no less than 193 Ducatisti who were, in turn, accompanied by over 160 guests. Divided into four groups, they came to the Tuscan circuit from 32 countries and were welcomed in a specially reserved paddock featuring the Aruba.it Racing-Ducati Team’s hospitality facility. What’s more, the Audi Driving Experience team was there with the Audi R8 Spyder, and the Lamborghini Huracan Coupé, Spyder and Performante of Lamborghini Test Drive.
A series of pits were set up for the event, including two “official” pits where Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri’s bikes were waiting to be tried out. Needless to say, the two Superbikes were the stars of this special day, which began with a three-lap session on the 1299 Panigale S, followed by another three on the 1299 Panigale Superleggera and three more on the Aruba.it Racing-Ducati Team SBK bikes.
Ducati organised the event down to the last detail to give participants an unforgettable experience. In addition to the entire Ducati Riding Experience instructor team, participants were also able to count on close support, companionship and top tips from Alessandro Valia, Ducati test rider, Danilo Petrucci, MotoGP pro with Team Ducati Pramac, Michele Pirro, Ducati MotoGP test rider and leader of the Italian Superbike Championship, plus, of course, Chaz Davies and Marco Melandri, the standard bearers of the SBK championship’s Aruba.it Racing-Ducati Team.
During the four days at Mugello participants clocked up a total of 7,300 km and 1,737 laps on these three awesome Ducati Superbikes. Moreover, 170 Pirelli tyres were used throughout the event, with Pirelli offering a complete assistance/change service.
The 1299 Panigale Superleggera is the world’s most exclusive, technological, highest-performing road bike thanks to its monocoque frame, carbon fibre swingarm/wheels and the most powerful version of the Superquadro. Thanks to its 215 hp, the EURO 4 desmodromic engine on the 1299 Superleggera is the most powerful factory twin-cylinder ever built; it incorporates the very highest levels of Ducati technology.
It was a unique experience” said Italian participant Federico Tofani, proud owner of a 1299 Superleggera. “Riding a Ducati Superbike is a dream come true. Thank you Ducati”.
Clement Frenk, who arrived at Mugello from Luxembourg, was equally enthusiastic: “It was unbelievable! A huge gift from Ducati that gave us a chance to ride three astounding bikes. The guys at Ducati did an incredible job. Thanks”.
Dutchman Jean Claude Luijcx: “I didn’t sleep a wink the night before the test. The 1299 Panigale S is an awesome machine, but the difference in the step-up to the 1299 Superleggera is mad. And you experience the same breath-taking difference when you ride the Superbike. Simply unforgettable!
Vito Dionizio flew in from Texas: “When I heard I’d be riding the Aruba.it Racing-Ducati Team bikes it took me a while to realise this was no dream. I mean, no-one’s gonna let you ride an official Superbike, are they? No-one. Or, rather, no-one except Ducati”.
Frank Duenas Jr. from California had this to say at the end of the day: “An experience like this makes you realise how much the customer is a part of Ducati. No other motorcycle manufacturer could offer its customers anything like this. We buy the bike and the brand – and only a brand like Ducati knows how to gift you an experience of this kind”.
Bernhard Marquart, from Germany: “I was blown away by the superb organisation. Taking part in an event like this makes you feel like one of the family. Being able to ride an official Superbike… a dream!
David Gallant, instead, came all the way from Australia: “What an amazing event! It was great starting the test with the 1299 Panigale S to get a feel for the track and then move on to the Superleggera and, lastly, the Superbike. A once-in-a-lifetime experience”.

Suzuki all-star track day returns to Silverstone’s GP circuit

Suzuki ’s annual all-star track day is back for 2017 and will again take place on Silverstone’s prestigious GP circuit on Monday 4 September, with this year’s attending stars including Bennetts Suzuki’s Taylor Mackenzie, Sylvain Guintoli, and Richard Cooper, as well as Motovudu on-track instruction guru and 500 Grand Prix race-winner Simon Crafar.

Operating out of Silverstone’s iconic Wing pit and paddock, the day will give Suzuki fans the chance to ride and receive some tuition from a range of Team Suzuki riders. The Bennetts Suzuki British Superbike team will be in attendance, with Taylor Mackenzie, Sylvain Guintoli, and National Superstock 1000 championship challenger, Richard Cooper. Buildbase Suzuki’s Superbike rider Bradley Ray and Superstock contender Alex Olsen will also be on hand.

Suzuki legend and three-time British Superbike champion, John Reynolds, will be available to talk about his role in the development of the new GSX-R1000, while offering his advice and experience, alongside track instructors James Whitham, Simon Crafar, Glen Richards, and Dean Skipper.

Following his ride at Oliver’s Mount onboard his father’s world championship-winning Suzuki XR14s, Freddie Sheene will also be among the special guests.

Attendees on the day can book into one of three groups, based on their level of experience and ability, with all that come along getting a Suzuki gift bag.

Suzuki GB marketing manager, Rob Cooper, said of the event, “We’re really excited to be going back to Silverstone for this year’s all-star track day, and it’s great to again be using the full GP layout; it’s one of the best circuits to ride in the world. But the best bit is always spending the day with customers, chatting with them in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and getting the chance to have a ride around with them on track. It’s also a great opportunity for us all to learn a thing or two about circuit riding from those that race Suzukis and instruct on GSX-R1000s for a living, hopefully making us all faster and safer on track. It’s going to be another great event and one we’re all really looking forward to.”

Places cost £199, and can be booked here.
