Visitors to EICMA 2015 elect the Ducati XDiavel as the “best-looking bike”

The Ducati XDiavel is the best-looking bike of EICMA 2015. As the 73rd edition of the renowned international motorcycle exhibition concludes in Milan, it is the public – attracted in huge numbers to the show at the Milan-Rho international trade fair venue – to declare the XDiavel the winning bike out of all those on display. This was the outcome of the “Vote for the best-looking bike and win it” survey/competition organised by Italian magazine Motociclismo, currently enjoying its tenth year of success.

With no less than 6910 enthusiasts deeming it to be the best, the XDiavel received the highest number of votes from both those at EICMA and visitors to the Motociclismo website. The new Ducati cruiser took first place with 60.78% of the votes out of a total of 11,369.

The votes were counted on Sunday 22 November, the last day of the show, at a packed Motociclismo stand, with the count also attended by Pierfrancesco Caliari (General Manager of EICMA), Piero Bacchetti (President and CEO of Edisport Editoriale), Federico Aliverti (Co-Editor in Chief of Motociclismo) and Andrea Ferraresi (Ducati Design Center Director), who received the award on behalf of the Bologna-based bike manufacturer.

The “Best-looking Bike in Show” award ceremony brought the curtain down on an intense week of exhibiting and events, at a show that saw an increased number of visitors with respect to the 2014 edition (628,000 visitors), confirming the positive signs of recovery now being seen in the motorcycle industry.

Right from day one the public flocked to the Ducati stand, especially the “total black” area dedicated to the awesome new XDiavel and its range of accessories and apparel. With this fascinating new bike, Ducati enters the cruiser domain and does so in its own inimitable way, presenting a true cruiser but with all the design, technology and performance one expects from a Ducati thoroughbred. The XDiavel offers both the ‘low speed excitement’ that comes from the relaxed riding and forward-positioned footpegs typical of a cruiser and the adrenaline rush of sports riding that Ducati has made its own. This is what the X in XDiavel stands for: the merging of two apparently separate, distant worlds on one bike, a superb combination where both are accomplished without compromise.

5000, 60, 40. Three numbers that sum up the XDiavel concept. 5000, as in the rpm at which the new twin-cylinder 156 hp Ducati Testastretta DVT 1262 engine achieves maximum torque (13.1 kgm). 60, as in the number of different ergonomic configurations for the rider. Lastly, 40, as in the maximum attainable lean angle. The XDiavel is the first Ducati to use belt-type final transmission, a must within the Cruiser world. The Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), together with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Riding Modes, Bosch ABS Cornering, Cruise Control and the innovative Ducati Power Launch (DPL) system make the XDiavel a technological gem offering high performance and safety. An S version of the XDiavel is also available.

Ducati presented a total of eight new bikes at the Milan exhibition, of which no less than seven were brand new models, namely the two Ducati Scramblers (the Flat Track Pro version and all-new Sixty2), the new Hypermotard 939, Hypermotard 939 SP and Hyperstrada 939 family, the new Panigale 959, the Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak, the brand new Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the eagerly awaited XDiavel. Last but not least, the 2016 new bike range was completed with the Monster 1200 R, previewed in September at IAA 2015 in Frankfurt.

KTM Streets Ahead for 2016

KTM STREETS AHEAD FOR 2016

New 1290 Super Duke GT, 690 Dukes and 1290 Super Duke R Special Edition lead host of updated models

At the EICMA Show in Milan on Tuesday November 17, KTM pulled the covers off its 2016 range of Street motorcycles for the first time.

Four new models were introduced in the shape of the 1290 SUPER DUKE GT, 690 DUKE, 690 DUKE R and 1290 SUPER DUKE R Special Edition while a host of other bikes in the range have been treated to subtle revisions to keep them at the top of their respective class.

Full technical information can be obtained in the press kit available directly from Simon Belton at KTM UK. Prices will be announced at Motorcycle Live, held at the Birmingham NEC from November 28 to December 6 which will also be the first opportunity in the UK to see the entire 2016 KTM Street range. Visit www.motorcyclelive.co.uk for more information.

KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE GT:

With the 1290 SUPER DUKE GT, KTM forcefully extends its Street range at the upper end. The star of model year 2016 is a perfectly equipped, light- weight and agile marathon sprinter with plenty of power as well as a vast package of the latest riding assistance systems. Besides the Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) including traction control and the C-ABS – both lean angle sensitive – it includes the KTM Ride Mode technology as well as a quickshifter. KTM shores up the long distance capabilities of the 1290 SUPER DUKE GT with a comprehensive touring package: a 23 litre tank, a lengthened rear subframe with integral mounts for the optional panniers, heated grips, cruise control, comfortable seats, the wind and weather protection of an adjustable windshield, LED cornering lights and LED daytime running lights. With a more than comprehensive equipment package like that, as well as its 173 hp LC8 engine and semi-active suspension, the 1290 SUPER DUKE GT masters the whole range from comfortable long distance motorway travelling to breathtaking alpine or track day use.

KTM 690 DUKE

More than two decades after the very first DUKE, KTM launches a new generation of the perennial hit, proving in an impressive manner that the single cylinder engine is all but obsolete even in a Street bike, not least by complying with Euro 4 emission control standards. The brand new engine puts out a full 73 hp of maximum power. Despite this, it offers plenty of smoothness and refinement thanks to multiple balancers, as well as an even wider powerband than its predecessors. The modified steering geometry brings even more stability and precision to the pre-eminently agile chassis of the 690 DUKE. And there is lots of other perks as well, like the on-board computer, a large, multifunctional TFT colour display and ABS as a standard. In addition, the potent single can be adjusted with an optional Track pack which includes a Sport and Rain Ride mode, Traction Control (TC), Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) and a Supermoto mode. The 690 DUKE is more alive, more appealing and more modern than ever.

KTM 690 DUKE R

The new 690 DUKE is also available as an ‘R’ version for model year 2016, distinguished by a full 75 hp of durable maximum power. Among others, the extra horsepower is a result of the 690 DUKE R’s high quality Akrapovič silencer. In addition, there is a Brembo Monoblock braking caliper and a fully adjustable WP suspension that also allows even greater lean angles than the 690 DUKE. The 690 DUKE R comes equipped with lean angle sensitive ABS, Motorcycle Traction Control (MTC), Motor Slip regulation (MSR) and the Supermoto mode. Of course the ‘R’ also benefits from everything that is new about the 690 DUKE, like the KTM Ride Mode technology, the new TFT display and the updated steering geometry. Great-looking parts like the cutting edge LED indicators and racy pillion seat cover round off the ‘R’ package. Insiders recognise the 690 DUKE R at the first glance by its wheels and frame in the typical KTM Orange.

KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R SPECIAL EDITION:
KTM proves year after year there is never a standstill in Mattighofen. That even goes for a milestone machine like the 1290 SUPER DUKE R, even though it only enters its third year in 2016. For all those who long for even less weight, even more sound and even more individuality, the new model year brings the SPECIAL EDITION. This upgrade treats The Beast to a whole host of top quality KTM PowerParts: an Akrapovič titanium silencer reduces the weight while adding extra sound. Wave brake discs offer even better feedback and expanded braking stability in extreme duty. Stiffer triple clamps optimise steering precision under ferocious braking. Levers adjustable in multiple ways and a different seat serve to optimise ergonomics specifically for track use. A unique paint design and classy accessories made of orange anodised aluminium or carbon fibre make for exclusive finishing touches.

Ducati World Première 2016

Streamed live all around the globe, the Ducati World Première 2016 saw the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer unveil its new bikes for the 2016 range on the eve of EICMA 2015. Buoyed by the just-achieved target of 50,000 bike sales and brimming with new products, innovative technology and plans for the future, it’s a solid, confident Ducati that’s heading to the event in Milan. These are true dream bikes: ready to thrill the swathes of enthusiasts soon to descend on the 73rd edition of the International Motorcycle Show to be held at the Milan-Rho trade fair from 19 to 22 November.

The press conference offered Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, a perfect opportunity to unveil the latest bikes and sum up developments on the market and at Ducati. Against the backdrop of a global market that is expanding yet still way behind pre-recession performance, Ducati not only continues to grow but has done so with a final end-of-year spurt.

“In 2015 Ducati sold over 50,000 bikes: a huge success that was achieved without growth being a goal in itself: it was, rather, the result of our customers being extremely satisfied with our products”, stated Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding during the presentation press conference. “After a long period of shrinkage, the motorcycle market is now showing promising signs of recovery and this, together with the effects of continuous product innovation and geographical expansion into new markets, has allowed us to increase sales in the first ten months of 2015 by more than 20% with respect to last year. This is an outstanding result, thanks also to the success of the Ducati Scrambler, a brand that won over new fans immediately. The title of the Ducati World Première 2016 was ‘More than Red: Black, Wild and Pop’. The message is clear: Ducati is strongly rooted in the sports motorcycle world and is continuing to extend its reach. And that means expansion into new segments: Black like the XDiavel, a true cruiser; Wild like the Multistrada 1200 Enduro, a bike to break down the barriers on any terrain; Pop like the Ducati Scrambler Sixty2, an even lighter Ducati Scrambler with all the appeal of its smaller 400 cc engine. In total we have 7 new bikes at EICMA 2015. These, together with the Monster 1200 R, already presented at Frankfurt, and a new Ducati Scrambler version developed jointly with Italian Independent to be presented at the end of the year, bring the number of new Ducati bikes for 2016 to nine.”

The Ducati World Première 2016 showcased several new bikes: two new Ducati Scramblers, the Flat Track Pro version and the all-new Sixty2; the new Hypermotard 939, Hypermotard 939 SP and Hyperstrada 939 family; the new Panigale 959; the Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak; the new Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the eagerly awaited XDiavel.

One of the most eagerly awaited bikes at EICMA 2015 was undoubtedly the XDiavel: in short, the “black” world cited in the title of the Ducati World Première 2016. This intriguing new bike sees Ducati enter the Cruiser world in its own inimitable way by presenting a true cruiser that has all the design, technology and performance one expects from a Ducati thoroughbred. Called the XDiavel, it brings together two worlds: the Cruiser world – low speeds, relaxed riding and long journeys – and the Ducati world, characterised by Italian style, refined engineering and unparalleled performance. The XDiavel offers both the “low speed excitement” that comes from the relaxed riding and further-forward footpegs typical of a cruiser and the adrenaline rush of sports riding that Ducati has made its own. That’s what the X in XDiavel stands for: the merging of two apparently separate, distant worlds on one bike, a superb combination where both are accomplished without compromise.

5,000, 60, 40. Three numbers that sum up the XDiavel concept. 5,000 as in the rpm at which the new twin-cylinder 156 hp Ducati Testastretta DVT 1262 engine achieves maximum torque (13.1 kgm). 60 as in the number of different ergonomic configurations for the rider. Lastly, 40, as in the maximum attainable lean angle. The XDiavel is the first Ducati to use belt-type final transmission, a must within the Cruiser world. The Bosch Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), together with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Riding Modes, Bosch Cornering ABS, Cruise Control and the innovative Ducati Power Launch (DPL) system, make the XDiavel a technological gem offering high performance and safety. An S version of the XDiavel is also available.

The all-new Multistrada 1200 Enduro opens up a whole new “Wild” world and represents Ducati’s entry into the maxi-enduro segment. Born to explore, unstoppable on any terrain, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is a full-optional bike designed to satisfy even the most demanding globetrotter. Moreover, it’s a maxi-enduro that has specifically been designed and built to handle the stress and strain of off-road riding. Thanks to spoked wheels – 19’’ at the front and 17’’ at the rear – the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is perfect for long adventure rides. Featuring electronic semi-active Sachs suspension (front and rear) and a 30-litre fuel tank, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro is at home on any terrain and is unstoppable thanks to a range that can exceed 450 kilometres. On the Multistrada 1200 Enduro Cornering ABS, Cornering Lights (DCL), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) and the semi-active Ducati Skyhook Suspension (DSS) Evolution system, with 200 mm of wheel travel, all come as standard. Moreover, Vehicle Hold Control (VHC) has been introduced to aid uphill starts. Lastly, in parallel with the Multistrada 1200 Enduro itself, a broad range of dedicated accessories – the most important being an aluminium luggage set – has also been developed.

The “Pop” segment, the third of the ‘new worlds’ that Ducati has entered with its new 2016 bikes, just had to have a link to the Scrambler “Land of Joy”. The Ducati Scrambler Sixty2 doesn’t just extend the range on offer from the new Ducati brand: it opens the way for a new two-wheel segment that meets the requirements of those seeking an affordable bike that’s easy to handle and has low running costs, but simply can’t do without that unique Ducati Scrambler spirit: fun and shared thrills. The Sixty2 is a Ducati Scrambler that draws its inspiration from youth street culture, skateboards, street food, pop music and, above all, the pop art that, back in 1962 (the year the very first Ducati Scrambler was launched), was taking the United States by storm. That’s why the Sixty2, a true “people’s” Ducati Scrambler, is already a “pop icon”. With the Sixty2, the highly expressive Ducati Scrambler design takes on a fresh look thanks to a slimline steel tank with dedicated graphics and logos. This makes the Sixty2 immediately recognisable, as do its three exclusive colours. Anti-conformist, affordable and essential, the Sixty2 once again provides that perfect Ducati Scrambler mix of tradition and modernity, a mix now closer than ever to the essence of motorcycling: two wheels and a simple 399 cc engine that guarantees tons of fun. Wide handlebars and a long seat ensure a comfortable, relaxed riding position. The low barycentre and a new 160/60 x 17″ rear tyre with a slightly chunky surface pattern ensure great handling and pure enjoyment whatever the situation, not to mention confident braking thanks to the as-standard ABS.

Also in attendance at the Ducati World Première 2016 were some of Ducati’s top riders. Both official MotoGP riders – Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone – were there to ride the new Hypermotards 939 onto the stage; the event also saw Davide Giugliano in the spotlight on the new Panigale 959 (he’s now ready to return to the track on his SBK following a serious fall at Laguna Seca). Also present in Milan was Troy Bayliss, there to endorse – and sing the praises of – the Flat Track Pro version of the Ducati Scrambler.

The Ducati World Première 2016 also offered a perfect opportunity to officially inform all the fans and enthusiasts watching the live feed of the dates for the next WDW, the legendary two-yearly Ducatisti global gathering. This is now set to take place from 1 to 3 July 2016.

In addition to the bikes, Ducati also presented a host of new accessories, special parts and a new clothing collection for 2016; the latter featuring both the more ‘technical’ items and eye-catching apparel and accessories fully dedicated to the Ducati Scrambler world. A preview of the collection took place at the Fonderia Napoleonica Eugenia in Milan, an event that saw press, public and fans make their way through the engagingly original Ducati Scrambler “Land of Joy”.

New GSX-R1000 concept headlines Eicma

Suzuki has unveiled an all-new GSX-R1000 at EICMA in Milan and has revealed details of how the new machine has been developed in tandem with it’s MotoGP programme, with the aim of reinstalling the Japanese manufacturer at the top of the sportsbike pile in 2016. The wraps were also pulled off a new SV650 and VanVan 200, which will join Suzuki’s range in 2016.

GSX-R1000 Concept

30 years of experience and knowhow has gone into developing the new GSX-R1000, which is the fastest and lightest GSX-R yet, boasting exciting new racing technology for the 1000cc sportsbike sector.

The engine’s design makes it the most powerful GSX-R ever built, increasing top-end output without sacrificing low-end and midrange power. Suzuki engineers, utilising knowledge gleaned from the MotoGP project, have implemented a new Broad Power System.

Suzuki Racing’s Variable Valve Timing is the biggest feature of the new Broad Power System, which optimises intake cam timing for both high and low speed rpm and bolsters top-end power without sacrificing power elsewhere in the rev range. There’s also a new finger follower rocker arm type valve train system, secondary injectors in the top of the airbox which operate at higher rpm, and two servo-operated butterfly valves in each exhaust header balance tube.

A new 10-level traction control system features, which can be altered while riding, so long as the throttle is closed, while a new quickshifter allows for quicker upshifts and downshifts, which can both be made without using the clutch. Upshifts can be made at full throttle, while on downshifts the system automatically opens throttle valves just enough to increase rpm and match engine speed to the lower gear ratio.

Launch control makes it easier for riders to get a faster start by automatically limiting engine rpm and optimising torque delivery while the rider holds the throttle wide open, and Suzuki’s Drive Mode Selector allows the selection of three different engine maps.

Suspension is provided by Showa, with the latest balance free front forks and balance free rear suspension. The new forks were developed by Showa through racing, and have now been adapted for use on production models. The balance free front forks provide more consistent damping and increased corning performance by delivering smoother, more controlled travel.

The new rear suspension unit minimises pressure balance fluctuations thanks to its unique hydraulic circuit, which optimises oil flow. As a result improved damping force responsiveness is achieved, which in turn offers superior traction and absorption capability.

New bodywork is aggressive but purposeful, designed to put performance first and is sleeker, narrower, and more aerodynamic, while headlight, taillight and indicators are all full LED.

The new GSX-R is expected to arrive in the second half of 2016.

SV650

For 2016 the SV650 returns to its sporty V-twin roots as a nimble, agile naked street bike. Suzuki’s 645cc V-twin engine, one of the most popular engines of recent times, gets comprehensively updated with more than 60 new and redesigned components. Peak power is increased to 75bhp at 8,500rpm, max torque is 64Nm at 8,100rpm, and fuel economy increases to 73.5mpg*.

Since its introduction in 1999 the SV650 has found favour amongst riders of all ages and abilities, and for all sorts of uses. As happy commuting as it is winding between the hedges, it also almost exclusively forms the basis for one of the most popular club racing championships in the country, the BMCRC Minitwin championship.

The new SV650 also features the first use of Suzuki’s Low RPM Assist. When the bike is being launched or when running at low rpm, sensors activate an Idle Speed Control system, which raises engine rpm slightly for a smoother launch and easier operation in the lower rev range.

There’s also a new exhaust system, radiator, and full LCD instrument panel, while the easy-start system first seen on the GSX-S1000 also features.

With a focus on the bike’s agility and manageability, engineers worked to bring the weight down to under 200kg. The new SV650 is eight kilograms lighter than the outgoing SFV650, with more than 70 new chassis components. Styling is sharper and sportier.

The new SV650 is expected to arrive in dealerships from March 2016.

VanVan200

Also unveiled at EICMA by Suzuki was a bigger version of the firm’s popular VanVan 125. Easily distinguishable by it’s 180/80 balloon rear tyre, the VanVan, too, has attracted a cult following outside of its appeal to new riders.

The introduction of a new 200cc variant only serves to broaden that appeal, and will attract A2 licence holders looking for more performance over the learner-friendly 125 model.

It is expected in dealerships from February 2016.

Carry on the R1 with Ventura

Ventura has added the latest YZF-R1 to it’s Bike Pack System fitment list. The motorcycle luggage specialist has developed solutions for all models of Yamaha’s flagship superbike, since the first generation appeared on the scene in 1998.

Although the latest incarnation of the R1 is designed to perform on track, its MotoGP-inspired electronic rider aids and modes, plus refined ergonomics, performance and handling, make it an equally enticing proposition for the journey to and from the circuit.

Ventura has always been a popular choice of luggage for superbike owners, because it is designed to fit around compact seat units and doesn’t require secure strapping points or increase the width of the machine.

Unlike other soft luggage options, Ventura’s system uses a mounting rack, which keeps the load stable, secure and carried well clear of the YZF’s tail unit and exhaust. It attaches using existing points on the sub-frame and doesn’t add significant weight.

The Pack’s unique ‘slide on, ride off’ fitment eliminates the need for straps or bungee cords, so it’s quick and easy to detach and reattach.

The Rack can also be removed in seconds, leaving only the discrete L-Brackets behind. The rider then has the option of fitting a pillion Grab Handle or a Sport Rack, suitable for transporting small loads.

Packs are available in a variety of styles and sizes – from a 35-litre weekend bag, to a massive 102-litre touring combination – and come with carry handles and shoulder straps for easy use off the bike.

A typical system for the 2015 R1 costs £327.00, including L-Brackets (£125), Pack Rack (£52) and a 47-litre Mistral I Pack (£150), as pictured. For further details and a full list of pack options, call Ventura on 01256 704909 or visit www.ventura-bike.co.uk

All New Triumph Speed Triple models unveiled

The new Triumph Thruxton and Thruxton R

Out of all the members of the new Bonneville family, the new Triumph Thruxton and Thruxton R have the most to live up to. Their name is about as legendary as it gets, even for an icon like the Bonneville. Back in the 1960s and ’70s it was synonymous with Triumph’s racing success across the world and most notably at the Isle of Man TT, and it inspired a generation of teenage café racers and custom specials.

The all-new Thruxton and Thruxton R more than just look the part, they really deliver out on the road too.

The breath-taking new Thruxton returns the café racer to its heritage performance roots, with all the power, delivered by its 1200cc ‘Thruxton spec’ engine, and the handling, agility and capability to match its beautifully imposing and authentic styling.

The more contemporary Thruxton R is simply the most thrilling and full-blooded sports classic you can buy. Building on the capability of the Thruxton, the Thruxton R is equipped to a higher specification with Brembo monobloc calipers, Showa big piston forks, Öhlins rear suspension and Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa Tyres. The legend is back.

Together, their uncompromisingly elegant and imposing lines are perfectly matched by the quality of their design, detailing, power and performance, and the incorporation of contemporary technology into a ride that’s as poised as it is exhilarating.

This combination of head-turning style, spine-tingling performance and unparalleled heritage and character is what makes the new Thurxton’s the real deal and the ultimate modern classic café racers.

New ‘Thruxton’ spec. 1200cc engine
The legendary character of the Thruxton comes to life through the 1200cc ‘high power’ 8 valve, parallel twin Bonneville engine.

This all-new ‘low inertia – high performance’ six-speed engine features a lighter crank, higher compression and unique airbox. With the pinpoint accuracy and instant throttle response of Triumph’s next generation ride-by-wire fuel-injection, fed by authentically styled twin throttle bodies, the Thruxton spec engine delivers a massive peak torque figure of 112Nm at 4950rpm – an amazing 62% more than the previous generation.

Beautifully styled, with a very high level of finish and detailing, the new engine, exhaust and throttle bodies incorporate cues from the original racing Thruxtons, whilst carefully integrating contemporary components to maintain that authentic look.

Behind the new 1200 engines stylish exterior sits a cutting-edge liquid cooling system, carefully integrated to minimise its visual impact whilst achieving cleaner emissions and enhancing fuel efficiency.

The unmistakable sound of a British twin

A pair of new twin upswept exhausts with reverse-megaphone end cans that deliver a thunderous, rich bass exhaust note to match their powerful presence and performance. Finished in chrome on the Thruxton and brushed stainless steel on the Thruxton R.

Dynamic Handling

The new Thruxton chassis and suspension is all about sharp handling that really delivers on its café racer looks. With sporting ergonomics, clip-on bars, fully adjustable suspension and 17inch front wheel, for stunning handling and agility, combined with Triumph’s signature ride dynamic of neutrality, agility and stability, the new Thruxton delivers a truly engaged and thrilling ride.

To deliver the high performance handling dynamic of its sports-orientated focus, the new Thruxton R benefits from cutting-edge chassis components and settings.

R&G Joins Forces With Scorpion Exhausts to Become Sub Distributor!

Having already sold exhaust systems to the general public, R&G is excited to announce it has strengthened its partnership with fellow British brand Scorpion, becoming a sub-distributor and offering the Derbyshire-based Company’s products direct to the UK trade.

Explaining the rationale behind the move, R&G’s Managing Director, Simon Hughes, said “While Scorpion has its famous core of “Red Power Centres”, there is always call for ad hoc ordering from other non-Scorpion account holders.  For example, a dealer may carry a different exhaust brand but wish to service a customer who specifically asks for a Scorpion end can or system.  We will hold stock, and as most UK dealers hold an account with R&G, we can provide a very useful additional service, as we do with other performance products already, such as BMC, SpeedAngle etc.”

Synonymous with innovative and performance-driven products, Scorpion is a perfect accompaniment to R&G’s range of race-driven products.  R&G has already been working with Scorpion, making bespoke exhaust hangers for the needs of teams backed by both Companies – namely Quattro Plant Kawasaki and Team WD-40.  There are also plans afoot for R&G to offer back-up to Scorpion-clad teams in the BSB race paddock in 2016, using the R&G mobile unit which is present at every round.

Commenting on the partnership, Stuart Reid, of Scorpion, said “We’re very proud that our two elite British brands are working together in this official capacity and are sure that consumers, dealers and racers alike will benefit from the closer association”.

For race and ACU support enquiries, please contact Alan Garrett, R&G UK Sales Manager, on 01420 89007 or alan.garrett@rg-racing.com

The next generation of Triumph Bonneville motorcycles

We are proud to announce the opening of a new chapter in the story of the most famous name and distinctive silhouette in motorcycling: the Triumph Bonneville.

The four year project, which started from the ground-up, called on an unprecedented scale of design, engineering and manufacturing skills.

The result – the next generation of the iconic Bonneville. A family of five exciting new motorcycles with 100% authentic Bonneville character, style and presence. All of which feature a class-defining level of performance, capability and quality, driven by an all new Bonneville engine family.

With a dedicated chassis and suspension package for each new model and carefully integrated rider-focused technology for enhanced confidence, control and performance, the new Bonneville family all ride and handle how a class-leading, truly modern classic should.

The new Bonneville model line up

Five all-new Bonneville models – all with 100% authentic character, beautifully enhanced styling and truly modern performance.

The Street Twin is our most contemporary, fun and accessible new Bonneville, powered by an all new high torque 900cc engine. With its unique character, distinctive sound, stripped-back styling and dynamic riding experience, the new Street Twin is the perfect Bonneville for today’s rider and the ideal starting point for personalisation.

The timeless style and iconic character of the original 1959 model is reborn in the classy and authentic Bonneville T120 and effortless cool Bonneville T120 Black. Both crafted to the highest standard of detailing, quality and finish, these models are matched by the capability and performance of a truly modern classic. The T120 and T120 Black are powered by the all-new Bonneville 1200cc high torque engine, fed by beautiful, authentically-styled, twin throttle bodies.

The new 1200cc Thruxton and Thruxton R are the real deal. With genuine poise, power and performance, they are the ultimate modern classic café racers. Both with beautifully imposing and authentic styling, they have the power, braking, performance and handling to live up to their legendary name.

New Bonneville Engine family

The Bonneville engine family is the new heart of the iconic British twin. Built specifically for the modern classic riding style, each new engine delivers more torque, more immediate and exciting power delivery and a richer sound you can really feel and hear.

With three new engines:

The 900cc high torque engine of the new Street Twin.

Delivering a massive peak torque figure of 80Nm at a low 3200 rpm – which is an amazing 18% more than the previous generation, delivered low down and across the whole rev range.

The 1200cc high torque engine of the Bonneville T120 and T120 Black.

Built specifically for the modern classic riding style, it produces a massive peak torque figure of 105Nm at a low 3100 rpm – more than 54% higher than the previous generation T100.

The game-changing 1200cc high power ‘Thruxton spec’ engine.

With immediate, exciting power delivery and a massive peak torque figure of 112Nm at 4950 rpm – an amazing 62% higher than the previous generation Thruxton.

All with truly modern capability, including the pinpoint accuracy and instant throttle response of Triumph’s next generation ride-by-wire fuel-injection system, as well as liquid cooling that improves fuel economy by an amazing 36% on the Street Twin alone. In addition, the 1200s all feature rider modes for enhanced responsiveness and control.

The unmistakable sound of a British twin

Each model has a totally new exhaust system and a unique exhaust note that matches its character, tuned to a level that you can feel and hear.

More Beautiful

Designed from original Bonneville lines, the new models are more refined, sharper, tighter and crafted, applying styling cues faithfully taken from the classic Bonneville bikes, such as the 1968 Bonneville and the 1959 original.

They feature high quality finishes and a striking level of detailing to enhance their iconic looks, such as the beautifully crafted new Monza-style filler cap on the Thruxton.
An innovative approach to sensitively incorporating modern functionality can be seen on the exhaust system on the T120 and T120 Black. This has an authentic and clean straight-through design, achieved by an ingenious twin skin design that covers the pipe run, through the cat box under the bike, and out again.

More capable

The inclusion of rider-focused technology has been implemented with care to deliver an engaged and safer ride, without compromising the style or character of the bikes. The development includes ABS, traction control, slip assist clutch, ride-by-wire throttle and rider modes (T120, T120 Black, Thruxton R and Thruxton), distinctive LED rear lights on all models and LED DRL headlights on all the 1200s (where legislation allows), USB charging socket and an engine immobiliser.

A completely new, ground-up chassis design unique to each motorcycle, incorporates all-new suspension and geometry, so all of the new models deliver stunning handling, stability and neutrality tailored to the style and character of each motorcycle, making them easier to ride for longer. This is particularly true when combined with the light action of the new slip assist clutch.

More ways to make your own Bonneville yours

With the launch of our new Bonneville custom accessories range, presenting over 470 new, stylish, high quality accessories, it’s never been easier to create your own special. This includes new exhausts from Vance & Hines and a garage full of custom inspired parts, from mudguard removal kits, to bench seats and beautiful compact bullet indicators to name only a few.

To make it easier, we’ve also created a set of exciting ‘inspiration’ kits to use as the starting point for riders to create their own Bonneville custom, or to have fitted by their Triumph dealer as a complete set – from Scramblers and Brat Trackers, to Track racers and Café racers. This includes, for the first time, a full factory Thruxton R Race Performance kit, specifically developed for closed circuit competition.

An unparalleled bloodline

The iconic Bonneville is named after the Utah salt flats where a Triumph 650 Twin streamliner, piloted by Texan racer Johnny Allen, shattered the two-wheel world land speed record in 1956. First produced in 1959, the T120 Triumph Bonneville was the original British superbike and, thanks to its legendary handling, style, character and sheer individuality, it has become a genuine icon to riders the world over.

Our five new Bonneville models draw on the distinguished and unbroken Triumph heritage of performance and style, from the Speed Twin 5T, the original 1937 500cc parallel twin that set the template for British motorcycling, followed by the 1949 Thunderbird 650, famously ridden by Marlon Brando in ‘The Wild One’, to the rip-snorting Tiger T110, the bike that the original 59 Bonneville eclipsed with its new twin carbs and class-leading performance.

The Bonneville played a major part in the creation of modern motorcycle motorsport and was a race winner ‘straight out of the crate’ – from Isle of Man TT wins, to flat track racing, the International Six Day Trial and the Thruxton 500 series, where the racing Bonneville gained its legendary name.

In its early years, it inspired a sub-culture of teenage rockers and café racers, drawing attention and turning heads at coffee bars and burn-ups all over the country – becoming the ride of choice for stars and celebrities like Steve McQueen, Clint Eastwood and Bob Dylan. Today, the Bonneville is chosen by a new generation of customisers and riders looking to own a real icon.

The future of the Bonneville, not a futuristic Bonneville

The interest and appeal of modern classic motorcycles is growing and evolving quickly, with many manufacturers bringing new models onto the market. From the rider’s perspective, they want beautiful motorcycles with real character and traditional values, combined with contemporary levels of refinement and capability. Our new Bonneville family takes the legendary story to the next chapter
– with a major injection of performance and real riding capability. This is without losing the original character of the iconic Bonneville and without becoming a techno reinvention with just a styling nod to the past.

They are what our customers have asked for and what the next generation of Bonneville should be – more beautiful, more powerful and more capable. With all of the character and style of the iconic original, alongside the power, performance and capabilities that modern riding demands, the new Bonneville family takes the legend into the 21st century.

Bonneville. Reborn

Weatherproof your wiring with OptiMate

Most electrical accessories designed for use on/with a motorcycle will get wet at some stage – after all, bikes are designed to be used outdoors. Keeping that moisture out of the electrical circuitry is crucial – even a small amount can cause intermittent faults and even total failure.

One of the most vulnerable points of any circuit is where connections are made, yet many accessories – even those designed for use during winter months, like heated clothing – aren’t routinely supplied with connectors that are able to keep out the elements.

OptiMate’s entire range of connectors and cables are weatherproof as standard. Compatible with the majority of accessories and add-ons currently available, they help to stop moisture causing problems and guard against any issues it might cause with the bike’s electrical system.

The range covers most of the connectors and leads needed to operate common accessories, like heated clothing, sat nav systems, smart phone chargers and battery optimisers. It includes:

  • SAE Connectors, compatible with all used in the industry, designed to accept OptiMate’s boot and cap or in-line seal that protects the connection against water, dust and dirt. Very useful whilst riding as the pins will not corrode, and in workshop/outdoor applications, where cables can end up trailing on the ground.
  • Custom battery clips; designed for square power-sport batteries, the flat tabs found on some small power sport and gel deep-cycle batteries, as well as the round posts common in automotive applications.
  • Moulded battery rings (M6/1/4”) specifically designed for power-sport batteries, a much better alternative to the common M8 / 5/16” ring.
  • Auto connectors (Ø21mm): plugs with built in fuse protection, sockets with retainer slots for the leaf springs and with sealing caps.
  • Bike (DIN) connector (Ø12mm): now fully moulded, and available in low profile 90 and 180-degree versions.
  • DC Ø2.5mm connectors commonly used in heated clothing, which have in-line seals/boots for every connection and a battery lead that comes with 16 gauge (1.31mm2) cable, rated to –40°C.

For details of the complete range of OptiMate connectors, leads and accessories – as well as their battery optimisers – and to find out how you can weatherproof your current kit, visit www.optimate1.com

JvB-moto Creates Yard Built XSR700 Super 7

Yamaha’s Yard Built projects have led the way in the revival of the cool custom world. Developing relationships with the rock stars of motorcycle customising, the project has delivered an incredible line up of unique and breath-taking one-off Yard Builts based on the Sport Heritage range of motorcycles. Legendary customizers from across the globe have turned their skilled hands to proving how easy it is to customize one of Yamaha’s very flexible retro machines. The exercise provides inspiration and has set new trends in the motorcycle world, making it a reality for everyone to make their Yamaha their own.

Following the stunning concept ‘Faster Son’ created by Chabbott Engineering’s Shinya Kimura this summer to launch the XSR700, Germany’s JvB-moto is now the first custom builder to step up and deliver their take on the latest offering from the Sport Heritage range. The result, the ‘Super 7’ makes a bold statement, making it clear that the possibilities for customization and personalisation with the XSR700 are huge.

Without any cutting or welding to the frame, Jens worked to strip back the bike with the drive to expose the essence of the retro styled machine. The end result is a super clean motorcycle that reflects the lightweight, powerful and agile nature of the standard XSR700.

Many of the parts on the ‘Super 7’ were made in-house by JvB-moto and will be available shortly for XSR700 owners. These include the headlight, LED indicators and speedometer mounting which holds the Daytona speedo. The side covers and seat unit that give the bike its distinctive shape were all made by JvB-moto as well as the mounting for the Arrows exhaust. At the rear of the bike, the mudguard, taillight and number plate mounting are all made in-house as well as the front mudguard.

The ‘Super 7’ sits on Pirelli Dragon Supercorsa tyres for total grip with Öhlins shocks at the rear keeping everything under control. The front forks are stock items, modified for the custom build. Custom risers keep the LSL handlebars at the right height in front of the stunning fuel tank, normally anodized but now stripped to show the raw alloy There’s also a custom rear brake reservoir and polished regulator.

The stock footrests and mountings were modified and JvB-moto LED indicators set off the front end. To finish off the sides the engine covers and other small parts were sandblasted to give the finished effect.

Everything designed and built in-house by JvB-moto will be available shortly as bolt-on parts for the XSR700.

The Layering Principle

Effective layering systems help riders deal with the varied weather conditions and temperatures frequently thrown at them while on the road, reducing perspiration and overheating on the warmer days, while insulting and protecting from wind chill when the temperature drops.

Layering enables people to make quick adjustments as the weather changes; adding or removing layers to keep them comfortable and focussed on riding.

Each layer has a function: the base layer (against the skin) manages moisture, helping to regulate body temperature by moving perspiration away from the skin to the outside of the fabric, where it can evaporate. The mid-layer is for insulating, protecting from the cold and trapping a layer of warm air close to the body, while the shell or outer layer shields from wind and rain.

Layering with Modern Textile Clothing

Most modern textile bike jackets are fitted with waterproof and windproof liners (e.g. Gore-Tex) and many have thermal lining too, made using insulating materials, such as Thinsulate. However, cold draughts frequently find their way in, through collars, cuffs and around zips & fasteners, forcing out body heat and causing rapid drops in temperature. Because base- and mid-layers are worn next to the body, they provide more efficient insulation.

Dry Inside and Cold Killers from Knox regulate and stabilise body temperature and – unlike layers made from conventional/traditional fabrics – are designed to be comfortable and less restrictive under riding kit.

Dry Inside base layers are made from MerinoPerform™ Advantage – a combination of soft Australian Merino wool and fast drying synthetic fibres – and are designed to move vapour and sweat away from the body quickly, keeping you dry and cool on warmer days and insulating when the temperature drops.

Australian Merino is amongst the finest and lightest wool available, with a silky outer layer, so it won’t itch or irritate like other wools can. All Dry Inside garments feature soft seam construction for added comfort and also have a natural resistance to the bacteria that causes odour.

Cold Killers mid layers feature Softshell fabric construction: a three-ply laminate, with a tough and tightly woven stretch fabric on the outside, a laminated membrane, and 3-D fleece liner.

The three-layer system acts as a barrier against the wind – helping to reduce the effects of wind chill – and allows warm air to circulate round the skin, reducing the overheat/chill-down cycle associated with conventional layering. It’s also water repellent and breathable, so it helps prevent water ingress and the build-up of moisture from perspiration too.

It’s also extremely thin and flexible, eliminating the need for extra bulky layers, allowing freedom of movement, and ensuring there are no ‘tight spots’ to restrict circulation.

Although designed primarily for motorcycling, both the Dry Inside and Cold Killers collections work seamlessly in a variety of other outdoor activities, including cycling and hiking, in all seasons and climates.

Styled in Knox’s London Design Studio, and made in their Lake District factory, they can be worn as casual apparel too, so there’s no need to carry additional clothing to change into when you reach your destination.

SW-Motech set up the Street for the Open Road

Combining Daytona 675 performance with an upright riding position, Triumph’s Street Triple Rx has the potential to cover some serious miles, but stripped-out street bike styling offers little concession to carrying capacity. Now, thanks to SW Motech’s comprehensive luggage range, owners can choose from a wide range of bags.

The Blaze® Pannier system uses a clever ‘Quick-Lock’ mounting rail, which clamps to the footrest hangers, securing the bags without extra straps/bungees. Wunder Cover

A cover is a must for any motorcycle left outside, helping to protect against the weather, dirt and spray from passing vehicles, bird droppings and harmful UV rays, (not to mention unwanted attention!)

Rubberised on the outside and with fully taped seams, Wunderlich’s Outdoor Cover is 100% waterproof, yet is also breathable. This helps to prevent the build up of condensation and moisture around the motorcycle, which can accelerate corrosion. A soft coating on the inside cushions bodywork from scratches.

The cover comes complete with a tightening band and additional loops for straps/cords, should the weather turn really nasty. The material is resistant to heat, cold and harmful UV rays, so will keep on protecting for seasons to come.

It comes complete with its own storage bag, measuring 47 x 31 x 13 cm and packed-up it weighs just over 3kg, so it’s easy to transport if bikes need to be covered outside work or while on tour. Designed to fit all BMW models, from the F650GS to the K1600GTL, even those with full luggage systems fitted.

Currently on offer at just £66-* including VAT (reduced from £79-) the Wunderlich Outside Cover is available from official UK distributors Nippy Normans. Visit www.nippynormans.com to view the complete range.

El Solitario create Yard Built XJR1300 ‘Big Bad Wolf’

Yamaha’s Yard Built Project Breaks New Ground with El Solitario’s Big Bad Wolf

Yamaha’s Yard Built program has gone from strength to strength, showcasing an impressive line up of customized creations built in collaboration with the world’s best custom motorcycle builders. This summer Yamaha teamed up with Spanish customhouse El Solitario for the final XJR build of 2015, celebrating 20 years of the iconic street machine. The result is an awe-inspiring creation, a race inspired track monster that more than lives up to its name, ‘Big Bad Wolf’. The bike broke cover for the first time at the Glemseck 101 show in Germany in September, taking to the 1/8 mile race track to bring an end to the reign of the defending champions Lucky Cat Garage.

El Solitario’s ‘Big Bad Wolf’ wraps up a year of incredible XJR builds celebrating the bike’s anniversary, a year that includes creations from Danish builders the Wrenchmonkees with the ‘Skullmonkee’, Portuguese builders itroCkS!bikes with the ‘CS-06 Dissident’ and Dutch builder Numbnut Motorcycles retro endurance racer inspired ‘Botafogo N’.

Despite the complete transformation from street machine to pure race predator, El Solitario stayed true to the Yard Build ethos and created the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ with no cutting or welding to the frame of the standard bike. The build highlights just how far you can go with a little imagination and an XJR1300.

“We are really happy with the collaboration with El Solitario,” commented Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager Shun Miyazawa. “The timing was just right as we believe they were ready to push out in a new direction from their previous work and break new ground. We wanted to challenge them with the Yard Built project to show a different side to El Solitario and push them to see what they are capable of. The result is impressive! With no cutting or welding to the frame of the XJR they have proved that the bike continues to be an excellent base for customization, no matter what direction you choose to build in. We’ve seen a number of amazing builds this year, taking different looks on the XJR and this is again a new approach. The level of detail is fantastic, and we are proud of the collaboration, showing not just a new face for the XJR but also new ground for El Solitario.”

El Solitario’s David Loner agreed, “El Solitario is not familiar with 4 cylinder bikes so at first we couldn’t understand the challenge. For months we tried to answer the same question: How could we take it further? Ground Zero would be to ask the correct question. Asking what scared us the most, the answer was performance and technology! Both were unknown and expensive paths for us. Suddenly aversion turned into curiosity and we had our challenge. We are motorcycle poets not engineers, so countless hours of research, and the love of our friends, made it possible to find the best partners in the world of fast bikes, and with their help, we developed one of the gnarliest muscle bikes ever to be seen in recent years.”

Key to the success of the project was the collaboration with Mauro Abbadini, from Classic Co. as technical director of the build, he brought with him the confidence and know how of a veteran racer and winner of many battles. Last but not least an army of racing industry experts, all keen to collaborate with El Solitario.

The end result, the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ AKA: BBW, has almost everything custom made with the exception of the frame, the tank, the handlebars and the rear light, reducing the wet weight to just 183kg.

The Motor was blueprinted and the heads were ported and flowed. The intake port flow was increased by 50%. Compression was raised from 9.7-1 (Stock) to 10.7-1. The combustion chambers were reshaped & the squish areas increased. The rods were reinforced with titanium bolts and the crankshaft was rebalanced. All the electronics and were removed and state of the art Lectron 42 Carburetors were added, developed specifically for the BBW by Lectron Fuel Systems on their flow bench to be plug & play on delivery. A Dynatek Programmable Ignition was installed. The work takes the power up to 148 BHP at the rear wheel.

Classic Co. then fabricated a carbon fibre tail section, motor air rams and the belly pan, as well as all the aluminum brackets for the needed modifications. UK based Dymag developed the carbon fibre wheels especially to fit not just BBW but also the stock XJR1300. Acke Rising from ISR in Sweden did a lot of machining sing the El Solitario designs to make custom triple trees, disc rotors and the incredible rear brake caliper bracket. ISR hand controls were added along with ISR front 6 piston calipers and rear 4 pistons caliper.

K-Tech Suspension collaborated with Novatech to develop the impressive front forks and the rear shocks and the screaming custom titanium exhaust was made by Asahina Racing in Japan, designed to fit not just the BBW but the stock XJR1300 also. Moto GP oil cooler supplier, Taleo Racing in Madrid created the custom semi circular oil cooler and EMD in France, machined in aluminum the prototype motor covers which will be available to buy from El Solitario for the stock XJR1300 in the foundry version.

A TWM custom gas cap sets off the tank and a stunning custom aluminum swing arm by Over Racing in Japan finishes the rear along with a set of their rearsets. The BBW was wired using the Motogadget M-Unit & uses the M-Lock for on/off. Corona supplied the super cool quick shifter and PIAA supplied the intense headlights.

The BBW stays stuck to the tarmac with Michelin street, slick and rain tyres to maximize the fun whatever the conditions. Last but by no means least the beautiful custom graphics and paint was the work of London artist Death Spray Custom.
