Henry Cole’s shed load of advice

There is no higher compliment one man can pay another than this: “Do you want to come and see my shed, mate?”

Henry Cole, host of The Motorbike Show, Junk & Disorderly, Find It Fix It Flog Itand Shed & Buried, introduces readers to the joy of sheds. In his new book, which is out next Thursday (17th September), Henry introduces the idea that a shed is a place to sit, a place to fettle and a place to stash, a spiritual refuge and a state of mind. From construction to maintenance, from foundations to roof to damp-proofing in between (“nobody wants rusty nuts”), here is all the practical information you need to start your own shed odyssey, delivered in Henry’s inimitable style.

“Your shed is your refuge. You need to make that pilgrimage to the bottom of the garden. Whether you’re walking down a muddy track or crunching along a gravel path… Breathe in the fresh air. Then pull open the door, grapple for the light switch, fire up the heaters and turn on the kettle. You’re the king in there.”

Henry covers everything from achieving that musty, oily shed smell (if you know, you know) through shed security and style to socialising (is it a one cuppa shed, or are you happy for invited mates to linger?).

“Sheds are about endeavour. They’re about restoration and preservation: spiritually, mentally and physically. They’re the place where old things get a new lease of life, and where new things – the motor, the light bulb, the telephone – are invented. You can make mistakes in a shed, and that’s where creativity begins, with experimentation and a whole lot of simple tinkering. (And don’t forget the complex etiquette of shed tea!)”

THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF SHEDS by Henry Cole is published by Quercus in hardback & e-book on 17th September 2020, priced £16.99. Visit https://henrycole.tv/ to find out more.

Henry Cole Autobiography Out In October

A BIKER’S LIFE
Misadventures on (and off) Two Wheels

Henry Cole is on television most days of the year as the presenter of shows like Shed and Buried, The World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides and The Motorbike Show.
A Biker’s Life is the dramatic, humorous and candid memoir of Britain’s busiest motorcycle show presenter.
Henry’s passion for motorbikes began at the age of eight, when  he was first introduced to a ‘man cave’. His great-uncle Redbeard’s corrugated iron shed was “stuffed to the gills with old motorbikes” which Henry helped rebuild and ride. Since then, Henry’s life can be charted through the bikes and journeys he has been on – from a stifling public-school education, via many years battling addiction, to the big-sky iconic routes Henry has ridden for over twenty series as presenter of numerous TV shows.
“I can’t think of anywhere I’d less like to be than in a car” writes Henry. “When you’re driving a car, you’re not taking part, you’re a spectator. You’re in a can; if it’s cold you turn up the heating, if you’re hungry you have a wine gum. You might be looking at what’s going on, but you’re definitely not a part of it.”
This book reminds millions of motorcyclists why their bike gives them the freedom to be exactly who they want to be;
“When you ride a motorbike you become part of a worldwide community of kindred spirits – those of us who will not be pacified by driving a car, but instead live for adventure, escape and the sheer thrill of the throttle”.
A BIKER’S LIFE Misadventures on (and off) Two Wheels by HENRY COLE will be published in Hardback by Quercus on 18th October 2018, RRP £20.00
