Newark Classic Bike Show Returns With Rotary Norton Legends Nation And Crighton

Star guests Trevor Nation and Brian Crighton will be at the Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic show in Newark on January 6-7, 2024, for all things Norton and more.

Nation and Crighton were a crucial part of the Norton resurgence in the late 1980s and early 90s culminating in both the 750cc Supercup Championship and the British F1 title.

Having emerged from the caretaker shed at Norton, Crighton evolved into the rotary genius that was part of the racing phenomenon, to which Nation contributed strongly to with wins in the proddie class on both 750cc and 1000cc machines. In doing so, the duo played a substantial part in the Norton team, which achieved its first win at Cadwell park in 1988 on the development bike, the RC588.

Show-goers will get to see these racing legends in action as they discuss their current projects and reminisce about their past glories together. Joining them will be two of the iconic John Player Special racing bikes that propelled Norton to great success back in the 1980’s and 90’s, with both guests on hand to fire up the bikes Nation once rode in the show’s very own fire up area.

Mortons Media Group’s Exhibitions manager Nick Mowbray said: “The team and I are absolutely delighted to have two of Norton’s former icons and two rotary machines joining them. Newark is always a great way to start the year, but this year we are delighted to be accompanied by two biking favourites and the machines they made famous.”

The Classic Bike Guide Winter Classic Show has become a staple in the motorcycle calendar, attracting people from all over the UK. Held at Newark Showground, over the first weekend in January, it offers a welcome respite from the hectic holiday season with hundreds of stunning classic machines on display.

Vincent Line up for Autumn Ardingly Show

Ardingly Classic Bike Show and Jumble returns to The South of England Showground on Sunday 29th October 2023, rounding off the season in style with a Vincent theme.

Vincent is synonymous with world speed records; perhaps the most notable being American rider Rolland ‘Rollie’ Free’s bathing suit ride on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1948.

Riding a Black Lightning, Free stripped to his swimming shorts to reduce drag on his final run, which he made lying flat with legs outstretched and his head tucked. He covered the mile in 23.9 seconds, passing the 150mph barrier, and on the return run reaching a record average speed of 150.313mph.

Celebrating this and the marque’s many other racing and record-breaking achievements, Ardingly organisers Elk Promotions and the Vincent OC have arranged a show-stopping line-up of racing Vincents for visitors to see. They will also be able to hear a selection, in the fire-up paddock.

Of particular interest are the Mighty Mouse and Super Mouse drag bikes, built by legendary racer Brian Chapman. These unique machines were still racing, and winning, into the early 1980s.

With nearly two acres of classic motorcycle show and autojumble undercover as well as jumble stalls in the open air, alongside Vincent there will be many other makes and models of classic motorcycles represented at Ardingly.

An array of club stands and plenty of private entries of pre-1980 machines will be on show in the main Jubilee show hall. Visitors wishing to enter their own bike can do so online on the Elk Promotions website.

The all-motorcycle autojumble and trade stands – offering new and used spares, accessories, clothing, tools and more – will fill up the remaining space inside the halls, with additional pitches outdoors.

Workshop Clear-Out stalls are available at the bargain price of just £20 per plot (pre-book only). The Free BikeMart display-to-sell area also returns, offering the opportunity to buy and sell complete machines.

As always, a range of catering – hand picked by the organisers – will also be on offer, to recharge and refresh busy bargain hunters.

The South of England Showground is located at Ardingly, nr Gatwick RH17 6TL. Eight miles from junction 10 of the M23.

Admission is from 10am and tickets cost just £7, with no charge for accompanied children under 16. Earlybird tickets are valid from 8am and cost £10. Tickets are available online or visitors can pay by card or cash at the gate.

Tickets, stall bookings and all other information can be found at www.elk-promotions.co.uk

Wheel Your Way To Stafford And See The Best Of The Best

WHETHER you’re interested in Hondas or Yamahas, or if Suzuki’s and BMWs are more to your taste, you’ll find plenty of breath-taking motorcycles to gaze over throughout the weekend of October 14-15 at the Staffordshire county showground for the UKs biggest and best classic bike show.

Here’s a selection of just 4 bikes out of the many that have come out of the garage that we know you’ll want to check out.

After being sold over 30 years ago, Ray Robinson was determined to restore his Honda CB7500 K1 to full working order. Whilst it took him 7 years to persuade the owner to sell it back to him, it took him just 1 year and hundreds of hours to restore his beautiful motorcycle from a bunch of parts to a fully working motorcycle.

David Smiths Yamaha RD350 LC is a prime example of a sublime motor. He put in 8 long years of blood, sweat and tears to restore this timeless RD that he could enjoy riding as well as bringing it back up to factory standard (which he succeeded in doing so) with the original paint, original decals and many of the parts having the original manufacturers’ finishes to them, he has managed to bring it back up to near enough its original spec!

Recreating a Suzuki XR 69 is never an easy job, but Nigel Griffiths successfully managed to build one from scratch from just photos and his own intimate knowledge of the Suzuki GS1000 that he raced back in the day! Not only did he make a lot of the parts himself, but he also had to make most of the tools and jigs to be able to build it in the first place!

Richard Gibbons took on the task of restoring a BMW R100 Café racer including features such as the later BMW K100 forks, Tarozzi rear sets and clip-ons along with many one-off parts as well as the engine being sorted by renowned BMW engineer Steve Scriminger. From the original sales receipt to the finished bike, it has almost a complete history!

Along with our show stopping display of bikes, there will be the final of the Back Street Heroes Custom Championships and the renowned, Henry Cole as this year’s special guest – who will also be joined by Guy (Skid) Willison and Allen Millyard to tell you all about their trials and tribulations in the biking world along with their recent world record; the fastest tandem motorcycle, reaching a top speed of 183.5mph.

Ticket price information:
Advance tickets, Saturday and Sunday: £15.50
Tickets purchased on the day, Saturday and Sunday: £18
Under 15s go free (both days)
Show opening times:
Advance ticket holders gain entry to the show from 9am. Tickets bought on the day entitle visitors to enter from 9.30am. Show closes 5pm both days.

The Legends corner also boasted another familiar face used to visiting the top step: Casey Stoner. The Australian is no stranger to Goodwood either and returns to the event in 2023 as part of the extra-special MotoGP™ contingent, riding his bike from 2008 sporting that number 1.

STILL TO COME
Reigning Champion Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) and teammate Enea Bastianini are ready to roll over the weekend, as well as Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Brad Binder. Binder was already at the event on Friday soaking in the atmosphere, and he’ll be suited and booted to head up The Hill on Saturday and Sunday.

BRAD BINDER: “It looks awesome, it’s so cool to walk around here and see all the amazing machines of the present and the past. It’s been super cool so far, managed to see quite a lot already and I’m definitely looking forward to taking my KTM up The Hill. There are so may cool things around, I think it’s hard to choose one. But when I have a couple of hours off tomorrow or in between, I’m going to go and have a walk round and look, go incognito!”

At GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3, Pol Espargaro hands over to Augusto Fernandez, and CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team’s Miguel Oliveira joins the fray for Aprilia on Saturday. More Legends are yet to saddle up too, including Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan and Alex Crivillé.

WHERE TO FIND US & HOW TO WATCH
On site, the MotoGP™ delegation is based in the Ballroom Paddock near the Drivers’ Club – the perfect showcase to allow fans an awesome overview of the teams prepping the machines. And if you can’t make it? We have incredible coverage of the event.

MotoGP™’s hillclimb action is live streamed on motogp.com, making sure fans around the world can get involved in this unique celebration of the sport. There’s also a selection of photos and round-ups of the action each day of the festival, so make sure to come back for more tomorrow!

QUOTES
CASEY STONER: “I’ve been coming here since 2006, I think it’s my fifth or sixth time here. So we’ve experienced this many times! For me, it’s an incredible event. There aren’t many places in the world that you can come to one area and see so much history as well as all the new products. And not only that, you get to see most of the cars and bikes all going up The Hill and actually being started, not just on display. I think it’s a fantastic event with so many people under one roof – well, there’s no roof. In one place! As a fan, I would definitely be coming to this event.

“It’s a bit slippery when it’s wet but overall it’s a great way to give the crowd something they normally don’t get to see. To see the range of bikes from the 1900s all the way through to what we have currently and the latest MotoGP bikes. It’s a really special event for it. Same with the cars! It can a little tricky, this track, but overall it’s always enjoyable and it’s great to catch up with friends.”

KEVIN SCHWANTZ: “Goodwood is always such a great experience. The weather’s taken a little bit away from it today, you know the ride up is a bit more fun when it’s dry! But still, the experience of being here, the house and driveway, all the people, the fans, there’s so much going on and there are so many special people here, whether it’s guys I’ve raced against, new generations of racers, previous generations to me. And so many four wheel guys, all kinds of really special people and it’s a real honour to be here. It’s a pretty special year for all of us, and it’s my 30th anniversary of my Championship.

“I get to get back on my old bike, I was just talking about it with my crew chief. Some of the races we did, ‘92, ’93, ‘94, he was my crew chief, and getting back on that bike you start to think about some of the stuff we did on it. Some of the great accomplishments, some of the great failures, the crashes, just all the different places that racing has taken us throughout the years. The experience of starting the Grand Prix season… I think in ’88 we had 12 or 13 races, to 15 or 16 when we finished. And so many places throughout the world we got to see, people we got to meet. And fans all over the world.”

GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 to hit the hill at Goodwood Festival of Speed

MotoGP™ will rip around one of the largest and most prestigious annual motorsport ‘meets’ from July 13th to 16th with a hefty presence at the ‘Festival of Speed’ near the southern coast of England, and GASGAS have never turned down the chance to get lively with a throttle. For star rider Pol Espargaro the event will mean a ‘reunion’ with the #44 GASGAS RC16.

GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 will join some of their paddock peers to parade up the famous Goodwood hill and meet fans of what is expected to be an attendance well over 200,000 from Thursday to Sunday. Tickets have flown as quickly as the wide 2023 display of cars, bikes and other legendary motorsport icons once did around racetracks across the world.

The 30th running of the Festival of Speed comes only a couple of weeks before MotoGP emerges from a summer break and with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone – another track as historic as they come – during the first weekend of August. To mark the occasion and for the special celebration of Grand Prix, GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3 will run the GASGAS RC16s along the Goodwood climb and with Pol Espargaro making his long-awaited return to the saddle on Thursday and Friday and then star rookie, Augusto Fernandez, donning the leathers on Saturday and Sunday.

Classic Suzukis at Ardingly Summer Bike Show

A pair of ex-Barry Sheene race bikes are among many exhibits at the Ardingly Summer Show on Sunday 30th July.

Both machines are from the 1973 season, when Barry Sheene won the newly introduced Formula 750 European Championship. The tubular-framed Seeley Suzuki TR500 was one of his most successful motorcycles, also carrying him to the Shell Sport Championship, King of Brands and MCN Man of the Year.

The other race bike is a Seeley TR500 1973 Monococque – the only original of this type ridden by Sheene.

Also confirmed for the show is a Suzuki TR750 XR11, raced in the 1975 Transatlantic Trophy by Stan Woods, who was the only British rider to achieve first place that year, (at the Oulton Park leg).

There is no age restriction on machines entered for display at the July Ardingly Show, but post-1994 motorcycles are expected to be of interest. Motorcycles can be submitted free of charge using an online form on the Elk Promotions website and owners of display bikes also get into the event for free.

The main bike show is held in the large Jubilee Hall, alongside club stands and selected traders. Bike jumblers and traders, tons of classic motorcycles, new and used spares, clothing and accessories are spread across five halls around the showground. Refreshments are available from a variety of carefully chosen food stalls.

The South of England Showground can be found at Ardingly, near Gatwick, RH17 6TL – eight miles from M23 junction 10, and clearly sign-posted.
.
Gates open to the public from 10 am. Ticket prices have been frozen at the 2022 rate, at just £7 for adults. Accompanied children under 16 get in for free, parking is free and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

EarlyBird Admission from 8:00–8:45 am is available for £10. Tickets are available online or visitors can pay by card or cash at the gate.

MotoGP touches down at Goodwood Festival of Speed

MotoGP™ touches down at Goodwood Festival of Speed set for spectacular celebration of motorcycle Grand Prix racing.

Champions past and present will descend on the legendary event in 2023, including much of the current MotoGP™ grid.

Ladies and gentlemen, SAVE THE DATE! The Goodwood Festival of Speed will welcome its biggest ever celebration of MotoGP™ from the 13th to the 16th of July, with much of the current grid set to debut on the fabled hillclimb. They’ll be joined by an array of MotoGP™ Legends too, including the likes of Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Kevin Schwantz and Casey Stoner – with more riders and teams still set to be confirmed.

The first ever Festival of Speed began with The Duke of Richmond heading up the Hill on a Ducati, and the 30th anniversary is the perfect occasion to put two wheels centre stage once again. Grand Prix riders and machinery will comprise the entirety of the motorbike contingent in 2023, with one almighty line-up ready to head up the Hill.

The teams from the current grid already confirmed at the event include Ducati Lenovo Team, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing, LCR Honda and GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3, as well as GASGAS Aspar Moto2™ with British rider Jake Dixon.

They’ll be joined by an incredible line-up of famous faces, with Giacomo Agostini, Mick Doohan, Jorge Lorenzo, Freddie Spencer, Casey Stoner, Kevin Schwantz, Wayne Gardner, Kenny Roberts Jr, Alex Crivillé and Randy Mamola already confirmed – between them holding an incredible 35 World Championships.

The MotoGP™ contingent will be located in the Ballroom Paddock, a stone’s throw from the Drivers’ Club – the perfect showcase to allow fans an awesome overview of the teams prepping the machines.

The Festival of Speed has always been the place to see motorsport megastars. In 2022, Giacomo Agostini celebrated his 80th birthday at the event, and last year the Festival celebrated a different landmark moment as Wayne Rainey rode his 1992-championship-winning Yamaha YZR500 for the first time since his career-ending accident in 1993, joined on the Hill by Kenny Roberts, Kevin Schwantz and Mick Doohan.

Motorcycles have always been an integral part of the Festival of Speed. Fittingly, the motorcycle entry at the very first Festival was organised by a legend who himself bridges two worlds: John Surtees, the only person to be crowned World Champion in two- and four-wheeled Grand Prix racing.

The Duke of Richmond: “I am absolutely thrilled that the Festival of Speed will host its biggest-ever MotoGP celebration this year. My thanks to Dorna Sports, the teams and riders for including us in their busy schedules – it means so much to everyone at Goodwood and all our fans that they will be here to celebrate with us.”

Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of Dorna Sports: “We’re very proud to announce this celebration of MotoGP at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. It’s an honour for us to play a key role in the 30th anniversary and be invited to showcase the best of our sport, sharing the stage with our fellow icons of speed. It will be something truly unique, and I want to thank our teams, riders and legends for showing such enthusiasm in attending. We hope we will be able to put on an incredible show for the fans – and for The Duke of Richmond! We are always honoured by his unwavering passion for our sport. Thank you for the invitation!

“We have recently celebrated the 1000th FIM Grand Prix, and next season will mark the 75th year since motorcycle racing became the first motorsport World Championship in 1949. At the same time, 2023 is a different kind of landmark year, with more MotoGP than ever as the Tissot Sprint debuts across the calendar. At this intersection of history and innovation, the 2023 Festival of Speed is the perfect opportunity to celebrate both the rich heritage of the sport and the heroes of the incredible spectacle we’re enjoying every weekend in this modern era.”

Icons of the Bike Racing World to Attend Knockhill Rewind Festival

The next round of the KMSC Scottish Bike Championship at Knockhill next Sunday (28th May) will be like no other ever seen in the 15-year history of the club as the 120 plus entry of racers will be joined by some of the icons of bike sport with the return of the Rewind Festival on Sunday 28th May, making it a truly special and memorable event for all.

Returning after a three-year break, the Rewind Festival celebrates racing and road bikes from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. This year, however, the organisers have assembled a galaxy of stars with four-times 500cc World Championship runner-up Randy Mamola heading the line-up which includes American GP legend John ‘Hopper’ Hopkins, three-times British Superbike Champion and ex-GP rider Niall Mackenzie as well as rising Moto2 GP star Rory Skinner from nearby Perth.

Californian Mamola was runner-up in the 500cc World Championship in 1980, 1981, 1984 and 1987, winning 13 Grands Prix, two of which were on board a factory Suzuki XR34 500cc two stroke which will be on display, and which will be ridden by Randy on track at Knockhill. A similar bike took Mick Grant to an Isle of Man TT victory in the same period whereby both race bikes have been loaned to Knockhill courtesy of Team Classic Suzuki. Team Classic Suzuki’s very own factory mechanic Paul Boulton will be looking after both motorcycles on the day.

John Hopkins, born in the UK but raised in California, has competed in the MotoGP World Championship, World Superbike Championship, and on his last visit to Knockhill, he was racing in the British Superbike Championship. Hopkins has now turned his focus to running a Moto2 team in the World Moto2 Championship and his team, American Racing, signed 21-year-old Scotsman Rory Skinner.

‘Hopper’ will be riding an ex-Steve Parrish Suzuki RG500 which will also be on display when not on the track. Rory made his debut at a Knockhill KMSC event as an 11-year-old when the management team at the Fife circuit managed to get dispensation for him to race aged 11, rather than the normal 12 years old. Since then, Rory’s rise to stardom has been meteoric and now competes in the second highest level of bike sport in the world, Moto2, just one level below MotoGP.

The line-up of megastars is completed with Niall Mackenzie, the three-times British Superbike Champion. Originally from Denny near Stirling, Niall is a legend in his own right and his ties with Knockhill go back to the start of his career when he made his debut on a Yamaha RD350LC in the early 1980s. After decades of success around the world, Niall became President of the Knockhill Motor Sports Club after its creation and is a frequent visitor as he runs his Niall Mackenzie Superbike Track Days at Knockhill and is a strong supporter of developing future young riders.

All four stars will ride period race bikes during parades and demos, and there will be an impressive Suzuki display of road and race bikes from the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s for the race fans to admire. These bikes include Grand Prix bikes, TT winning bikes and others that have won numerous championships across Britain, Europe, and the World.

The Rewind festival will feature a live show of classic race bikes, some of which will be demonstrated during the parade sessions on Sunday and in addition, there’s a full race programme of Scottish Championship action from 9am.

For tickets and further information, please visit www.knockhill.com/events.

Romney Marsh Bike Show on 7 May Cancelled

The Romney Marsh Classic Bikejumble on Sunday 7th May at Hamstreet in Kent has been cancelled.
