TT Hero Ian Hutchinson to ride at the Bike Bonanza

Mallory Park is delighted to announce that TT hero Ian Hutchinson will be one of the guests of honour at this year’s Mallory Park Bike Bonanza, in association with Lexelle and Mackenzie Hodgson Insurance, on July 15/16.

Earlier this year, ‘Hutchy’ suffered a stroke while out cycling, yet despite doctors giving him the all clear to drive a car, the ACU withdrew his racing licence for a year. The Bonanza however, under Mallory’s jurisdiction, allows Hutchy to ride in the Master’s Parade sessions.

Hutchy said: “After my stroke, the ACU pulled my racing licence for a year. I’m gutted because it means I’ll miss the TT. But I’ll definitely be at Mallory. I’m looking forward to meeting the fans, and I’m excited about being able to do some laps there on a BMW.”

Mallory has a special place in Hutchy’s racing memories: “My first ever race was at Mallory Park. I was riding a 600 S-Rad Suzuki and finished fourth in a New Era meeting. I’ve still got the bike. Maybe I should get it prepped for the Bonanza,” he quipped.

Hutchy, 43 and from West Yorkshire, is known as one of the most committed, determined characters the sport has ever seen and has won 16 TT races, his first one coming in 2007, followed by two more on the Island in 2009.

A year later came his incredible record-breaking five solos wins in a week during the 2010 TT. In what was a truly great season he also won a North West 200 Supersport race, three races at the Ulster GP, and the Scarborough Gold Cup – only for his career to be plunged into doubt at the end of that season when he suffered terrible leg injuries in a crash at Silverstone.

Despite a lengthy rehabilitation process, hampered by rebreaking his leg in a freak accident at the London Motorcycle Show in 2012, Hutchy fought back to win three TT races in 2015, another three in 2016, and two in 2017, but his glittering career continues to be blighted by injuries and ill-luck.

He broke his femur in a 2017 TT crash but fought his way back to fitness yet again. Then this year he was preparing to race for the Milwaukee BMW Motorrad by TAS Racing team, only to suffer a stroke while out training on a pre-season cycling ride in Spain earlier this year.

Chris Wilson brings Offenstadt 500 to the Bike Bonanza

Mallory Park is delighted to announce that Chris Wilson is bringing four of his classic collection to his year’s Mallory Park Bike Bonanza, in association with Lexelle and Mackenzie Hodgson Insurance, on July 15/16.

Two of the bikes are rather special World Championship 500 Grand Prix machines: the French-built Offenstadt 500 and an Italian Sanvenero square four.

The French machine was built by Eric Offenstadt in 1973 and features Eric’s own monocoque alloy frame and his SMAC mag-alloy wheels. He had raced a similar monocoque-framed machine in 1971 but found the three-cylinder air-cooled Kawasaki 500 too wide so he switched to a 750 triple engine with the ’73 bike, removing one cylinder to create a unique 500cc twin.

Italian Emilio Sanvenero had success with 125 machines before creating his own 500cc racer in the early 1980s, following a square-four, rotary-valve, design concept to Suzuki’s RG500, but using Campagnolo crankcase, Hoeckle crankshafts, Mahle pistons and Nikasil barrels. Riders were Swiss Michel Frutschi, Italian Carlo Perugini and Frenchman Guy Bertin. Chris’ bike is one of only three ever made.

The other two bikes are from the earlier 1970s Formula 750 era, the Hadleigh Honda and a CR750 replica, based on Honda’s CB750-4, the first Japanese ‘superbike’.

The Hadleigh Honda, built and raced by Julian Soper in the mid-1970s, featured a Rob North frame, similar to those used in the super-successful Triumph and BSA works triples of the era, but housing race-tuned four-cylinder engine based on a Honda CB750-4.

The CR replica looks similar to the factory Honda that Dick Mann took to victory in the 1970 Daytona 200. And, like Mann’s race winner, this bike features a brash four-into-four exhaust system.

Chris commented: “I’m delighted to be able to Help Stuart Hicken and Mallory Park by supplying bikes for the Bonanza. I love the Mallory circuit and Stuart has always gone out of his way to make me and all other motorcycle enthusiasts welcome at Mallory events.”

Mallory Bike Bonanza replaces Festival of 1000 Bikes

This year’s Mallory Park Bike Bonanza, in association with Lexelle and Mackenzie Hodgson Insurance, on July 15/16, replaces what was known as the Festival of 1000 Bikes as the premier event at the Leicestershire racing circuit.

The action-packed weekend, organised by the circuit’s management team Real Motorsport Limited, promises an array of interesting bikes and sidecar outfits that can be seen taking to the track in parades throughout the weekend. Saturday is all about road machines, whilst Sunday focuses on road and race machines, and the highly anticipated Mallory Masters parade.

Mallory Park boss Stuart Hicken said: “When the VMCC decided against promoting the Festival of 1000 Bikes at Mallory for this year, we felt the best option for us and our customers, was to turn our own Bike Bonanza into a premier event that we can develop and promote not just this year, but for the foreseeable future.”

The 1.35-mile circuit, nestled within the heart of the Leicestershire countryside, will host the ‘Mallory Masters, parades for racing stars past and present, including Niall and Tarran Mackenzie, Michael Dunlop, Michael Rutter, John Cooper, who will be descending on the venue which is often dubbed the ‘Friendly Circuit’ for this not-to-be-missed family event.

There will be several special tributes to past Mallory Masters too; including Phil Read MBE, Chris Vincent, Paul Smart, Percy Tait, Tony Rutter and Colin Seeley, with really special displays of bikes and memorabilia representing these legends.

Away from the tarmac track there will be some 50 Owners’ Club stands, trade stands, an autojumble, national championship dirt track racing presented by the Dirt Track Riders Association, a Pre-65 Trial, a display of military vehicles and much more.

Live music on Friday and Saturday evening will take guests from a wonderful day of race action into an evening of entertainment for all the family.
