Akrapovič and Ducati to Extend Partnership with New Off-Road Collaboration

Akrapovič and Ducati to Extend Partnership with New Off-Road CollaborationAkrapovič and Ducati already enjoy a successful relationship in the commercial and racing worlds. Now this alliance is expanding to off-road racing with the announcement that the Slovenian company will supply the official exhaust of the Ducati Corse Off-Road team.

Akrapovič has a strong bond with Ducati Corse, and this partnership witnessed Ducati riders Francesco Bagnaia (MotoGP™), Álvaro Bautista (WorldSBK), and Nicolò Bulega (WorldSSP) win 2023 world championship titles while using Akrapovič exhausts. As part of preparations to defend those titles this season, the official presentation of the 2024 Ducati Lenovo Team and the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team was held at the Campioni in Pista 2024 event in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. It was during this prestigious launch that the Ducati Corse Off-Road team also unveiled its plans for the forthcoming season, including that the team will be using Akrapovič exhaust systems.

The Ducati Corse Off-Road programme has been working intensively on the 450 prototype, with nine-time MX World Champion Antonio Cairoli recently joining the team as a high-performance test rider to apply his talent, speed, and experience to provide important feedback and direction for the development of the new motorcycle. The bike will be equipped with an all-new Akrapovič exhaust and will make its debut in the 2024 Italian Motocross Championship. Alessandro Lupino, eight-time Italian Champion and 2021 MXoN winner, will be onboard to validate the technical solutions and development of the bike within the demands of a racing environment.

The new off-road division of Ducati Corse will deal with the management and organization of the Bologna-based manufacturer’s sporting programme, which will see participation in the MXGP World Championship and the AMA Supercross Championship in the next few years. With an emphasis on high-performance, lightness, and components that can be pushed to the extreme, with an engine supplying a broad power delivery curve, the Ducati Desmo450 MX prototype will use an Akrapovič exhaust system specially designed for the bike that fits these criteria. The use of lightweight titanium and a durable design will ensure the system meets the harsh demands of off-road racing. This bespoke exhaust has been developed with close cooperation between Ducati Corse and Akrapovič engineers to optimize the character of the Ducati’s unique powerplant, while at the same time ensuring the exhaust is compliant with FIM noise regulations.

Akrapovič has taken its wealth of knowledge and experience from racing since its inception in 1991 – which has seen the company celebrate 175 world champions in road and off-road racing – into this programme, and it has utilized its extensive know-how and state-of-the-art technology to produce a high-performance exhaust system for the Ducati Desmo450 MX prototype.

Paolo Ciabatti, General Manager, Ducati Corse Off-Road:
“We are very pleased to have extended Ducati Corse’s long-lasting and successful relationship with Akrapovič also to our exciting new off-road program. Their experience in the development of high-performance titanium exhaust systems has been very beneficial for us, also considering the demanding future FIM noise regulations, in place from 2025 onwards. Therefore we want to thank Akrapovič for their continued support to our racing activities, and we will work hard to bring to success also Ducati Corse Off-Road on the motocross tracks.”

Slavko Alojz Trstenjak, Head of Akrapovič Racing R&D:
“After several years of successful collaboration with Ducati Corse, we’re pleased to also be their number-one choice as a development partner and exhaust system supplier for Ducati’s entry into the motocross programme. In developing the exhaust system’s configuration, which satisfied their demanding racers used to high standards, the Akrapovič Racing R&D department also joined forces with our production exhaust systems R&D. We’ll be following the new team’s performance with great interest, along with the development of their racing bike, for which I’m sure we’ll upgrade the exhaust system even further. Everyone at Akrapovič wishes Ducati a successful start in motocross.”

Ducati’s Electric Chapter gets Underway: Production of MotoE Bikes Begins

Ducati’s electric chapter gets underway: production of MotoE bikes for the 2023 championship begins.

A little more than a year after the first test with Michele Pirro at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, work has begun on the “V21L” prototypes that will be the protagonists of the 2023 FIM Enel MotoE™ World Championship season. The production of the bikes started in December and the 23 units will be ready by mid-February. In addition to the 18 motorbikes that will be raced, five spare units will be made available to the organisation. Each prototype is assembled by expert technicians in the Ducati MotoE Racing Department with the same process, precision and attention to detail typical of the high craftsmanship used to build a MotoGP bike.

The start of production of the “V21L” prototypes represents the beginning of a new and important chapter in Ducati’s history. For the Bologna-based company, this project was born with the aim of developing skills for its future, maintaining the approach that has always fuelled Ducati’s DNA: experimenting with technological solutions in the world of racing and working to ensure that everything developed in this area can then be used on motorbikes destined for enthusiasts all over the world. To do this, Ducati created the world’s most technological, refined and sophisticated electric motorcycle, the result of the joint work of Ducati R&D engineers and the Ducati Corse team. “V21L” is the MotoGP of electric motorbikes, combining the electronic technologies and chassis dimensions developed by Ducati Corse with the design process and project management typical of a road bike like the Panigale V4. It is the combination of the best skills of the two worlds, racing and production, a prototype with which Ducati experiments in a world yet to be discovered, that of electric sports bikes.

Claudio Domenicali, CEO Ducati: “The start of production of the Ducati MotoE is a historic moment for our company, which with this project is thoroughly studying the technologies of the future for the world of motorcycling. It is an important area of experimentation, in which we are investing to build know-how, so that we will be ready when battery technology should allow the creation of an exciting electric road bike with the weight, performance and range that enthusiasts expect from a Ducati. We are therefore embarking on this new adventure with the aim of developing the people and skills within the company to shape what the character of a future Ducati electric road bike might be. The MotoE project represents a decisive step for Ducati to contribute to the reduction of CO2 emissions on the product side, alongside research into synthetic fuels (eFuel) that can reduce the total CO2 emissions of internal combustion engines to zero. Environmental sustainability is something that all individuals and all companies must consider a priority if the delicate balance of the planet is to be preserved. Ducati is committed to this also at industrial level, and the construction of the new Finitura e Delibera Estetica area classified as Nearly Zero Energy Building is just the latest example”.

After a year of development tests that have seen Michele Pirro, Alex De Angelis and Chaz Davies take turns riding the “V21L” prototype, the Ducati MotoE project is getting closer to the moment when the bikes will take to the track. The first test with the riders and teams that will compete in the 2023 World Championship is scheduled for the 6, 7 and 8 March at Jerez, followed by three more test days on the 3, 4 and 5 April at the Montmelò circuit in Barcelona.

The race debut will take place at the French Grand Prix on Saturday, 13 May. The 2023 MotoE World Championship calendar is spread over eight Grands Prix with two races per weekend, both on Saturdays. After the French debut, the MotoE World Championship will be present in all the following European races until the Misano GP, thus will continue at Mugello on the weekend of 11 June, at Sachsenring on the following weekend and at Assen on the 25 June. After the summer break, the Ducati MotoE bikes will return to the track at Silverstone on 5 August, before tackling the final three Grands Prix at the Red Bull Ring (20 August), Catalunya (2 September) and Misano (10 September).

Excitement and fun all round in the Ducati Motorola e-Race

The exclusive and spectacular Ducati Motorola e-Race organized on the occasion of the Motor Valley Fest Digital ended with victory for the pro gamer Andrea “AndrewZh” Saveri.

The official Ducati Corse rider, as well as World Champion of the 2019 MotoGP eSport, therefore the favourite at the start, dominated both races conquering the maximum points (20). In second place with 9 points on a par with the third classified was Pramac Racing eSport rider Davide Gallina, “Davidegallina23”, who still placed second thanks to the best performance obtained in qualifying. Finally, with fourth place in the first race and second place at Misano, Michele Pirro ended up on the third step of the podium.

The first of the two scheduled events was held on the Mugello circuit, one of the most spectacular in the whole championship, over a distance of 6 laps in cloudy weather.

An adrenaline-fueled start between the three men on the front row, AndrewZh, Gallina and Bagnaia, saw the latter get the best and take the lead before falling victim to several crashes, the first of which entering the Scarperia curve. This prevented him from fighting for the podium, thus allowing a cautious Danilo Petrucci to conquer third position. It was a tougher race for Michele Pirro, who was also involved in an unexpected off-track excursion, and Andrea Pirillo who finished last.

Mugello Race Results:
1. Andrea “AndrewZh” Saveri
2. Davide Gallina +3.469
3. Danilo Petrucci +25.464
4. Michele Pirro +30.675
5. Pecco Bagnaia +35.153
6. Andrea Pirillo NC

The second race was at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, one of the main Motor Valley racetracks, where 7 laps were run in sunny weather.

It was an impeccable performance by the champion Andrea Saveri, despite an initial crash, who came first with a gap of almost 30 seconds over the rest of the group. It was a boisterous session for the other players, with several crashes that repeatedly shuffled the cards on the table. The best came right at the very end with Petrucci on the final lap passing and putting in difficulty the pro gamer “Davidegallina23”, who until then had defended second position without any problems. The rider from Terni crashed at turn 4, losing the rear and giving way to Michele Pirro, who in turn had taken advantage of a crash by Gallina to gain a position. Bagnaia and Pirillo had an uphill struggle right from the start and were never involved in the fight for the leading positions.

Misano Race Results:
1. Andrea”AndrewZh” Saveri
2. Michele Pirro +28.449
3. Danilo Petrucci +32.129
4. Davide Gallina +34.371
5. Pecco Bagnaia NC
6. Andrea Pirillo NC

The virtual competition, organized in collaboration with Pro2Be Esports, was a truly spectacular event complete with a podium ceremony. After a few words from Ducati CEO, Claudio Domenicali, the top three classified riders were rewarded with brand-new high-tech smartphones by Roberto Gomez, Brand and Marketing Director of Motorola, brand of the Lenovo Group, an important partner of Ducati Corse in the MotoGP world championship.

Just as in a real GP, there were also the post-race interviews with the protagonists.

Andrea Saveri – 1st place
“Participating and winning in this first event organized by Ducati and Motorola was great! Racing virtually with real riders is like a dream coming true! In addition to the fun, it was also a good opportunity to contribute to the initiative created by Ducati #raceagainstCOVID! I can’t wait for the next event!”

Davide Gallina – 2nd place
“It was an honour for me to represent Pramac Racing and race on the track with the official riders. The Ducati Motorola e-Race was a success, I’m sure the public also enjoyed it.”

Michele Pirro – 3rd place
“I am happy to have brought home the first podium of the season albeit in this particular mode. In the last period, staying at home, I’ve become quite passionate about the virtual world, which is completely different from the real world, but still requires training. Today I had a lot of fun following Andrea and Davide, who are professionals, although I hope to return soon to race on a real bike.”

Danilo Petrucci
“The world of eSports on two wheels is really fascinating. I got caught up with video games when I was a child but unfortunately in the last 10 years, I haven’t had much time to devote myself to them. The racing is quite difficult; you have to do a lot of kilometres and spend a lot of time and effort to understand how to set up the bike to the fullest. I have to admit that I prefer real races in any case.”

Francesco Pecco Bagnaia
“Andrea and Davide go much better than me, I’m learning and having fun, but they are pro riders and at the moment are unreachable. Maybe if I continue to practice, in a few years, I could reach their level, but certainly not in the immediate future. I think what we are doing is great fun and really nice, it is a growing phenomenon that allows a lot of people to get closer to our world.”

Andrea Pirillo
“I have always loved video games and in the past two months I have focused a lot on the new platforms. I trained a lot to reach an entry level that would allow me to take part in the races. I like to think about the world of eSports a bit like that of real life, because even in a virtual world the more you train the better you get.”

At the end of the races the two pro gamers, Andrea Saveri and Davide Gallina, stayed behind for a Q&A session with all the fans.

The official hashtag of the competition was #raceagainstCovid, the ongoing fundraising launched by the Borgo Panigale company in favour of the S. Orsola General Hospital in Bologna. To donate, just go to the dedicated page of the GoFundMe platform or make a payment to the account of the Hospital (IBAN: IT68E0306902480100000300027) indicating the purpose “donation raceagainstCovid”.

For those who were unable to follow the Ducati Motorola e-Race live, you can watch it on the Ducati.com website, on the YouTube channel of the Borgo Panigale manufacturer and on www.motorvalleyfest.it.
