Riding Route 66 – Henry Cole’s new book

Riding Route 66: Finding Myself on America’s Mother Road

RIDING ROUTE 66 follows Henry Cole as he travels along America’s most famous highway on a journey of self-discovery.

Known as ‘Mother Road’, Route 66 is one of the most famous highways in the USA. Crossing the width of the country, it is an immensely challenging route to travel and Henry has ridden it three times. This book is about the freedom that only the road and a motorcycle can give you, and the importance of embracing the highs and lows of life equally.

The book is more than the story of a road trip, as Henry explains; “Every time I have ridden 66, within 10 miles of setting off, I never want that ride to end. I think it’s because Route 66 encapsulates struggle and, ultimately, triumphing over unimaginably difficult conditions. I think everyone can connect with that.”

One of the most-recognised faces in UK motorcycling, Henry Cole is on television most days of the year as the presenter of shows like The World’s Greatest Motorcycle Rides, The Motorbike Show, Shed and Buried, Junk & Disorderly and Find It, Fix It, Flog It! His career also involves producing and directing and he has his own television production company, HCA Entertainment. Henry is the author of two previous books, A Biker’s Life and The Life-changing Magic of Sheds.

Riding Route 66: Finding Myself on America’s Mother Road is on sale from 6th June priced £22- (hardback, 272 pages) and is available on Amazon and from all good book shops.

Shed & Buried Series 6 starts in June

Henry and Fuzz return to Quest for some serious shed searching

Henry Cole and Fuzz Townshend will return to the nation’s small screens – and outbuildings – this June, with brand new episodes of Shed & Buried.

Now in its sixth series, Shed & Buried brings together bike-mad Henry with fellow vehicle fanatic Fuzz and expert restorer Guy Willison, to do what they do best – unearthing the automotive antiquities buried in Britain’s sheds, outbuildings and barns.

Top haggler Henry has a real eye for a bargain and loves all things two- three- and four-wheeled – and is rather partial to a period petrol pump. He’ll be on the hunt for cars, bikes, boats, tractors and anything else motoring-related he can lay his hands on.

Helping him out – and holding him back from buying something before they can give it the once over – are Fuzz Townshend and Guy ‘Skid’ Willison. They’ll have the unenviable task of getting whatever Henry finds up and running again. Engineering genius Allen Millyard is also on call again, for engines that refuse to run.

Will they find a nice little earner? Maybe. Whatever happens, there’s guaranteed to be a lot of rummaging, a bit of fiddling, fettling and polishing, tea and biscuits, and plenty of pleasure in resurrecting long-neglected vehicles.

Shed & Buried returns to Quest (Freeview channel 12) from 11th June. It’s also available to stream on the discovery+ website at www.discoveryplus.co.uk.

New Find It Fix It Flog It on UKTV

Nation’s favourite repurposing show finds new home on Yesterday channel.

A new series of Find It Fix It Flog It comes to the Yesterday channel and streaming service UKTV Play from 25th March 2024, unlocking padlocks on the sheds, garages and barns of Britain, in the hope of making a tidy profit for their owners.

Serial shed explorers Henry Cole and Simon O’Brien will once again be rummaging around the nation’s outbuildings, unearthing unwanted items that can be upcycled into treasures.

Motorbike-mad Henry will be hunting down some rusty relics from the motoring past. With a bit of help from his good mates, engineering genius Allen Millyard and ace restorer Guy Willison, whatever he finds will get a second life.

Simon has a real eye for objects that can be turned from old junk into furniture, fixtures and fittings cool enough to grace even the trendiest home or garden. Sidekicks Gemma Longworth and Phil Carroll possess the knowhow, skills and tools to make it happen.

Along the way, the pair will be drafting in some of the UK’s most talented tradespeople too, who’ll be using their skills to help save the items the duo find from ending up in landfill.

When all the hard work is done, antiques and collectables expert Ronnie Archer Morgan will be judging the quality of the craftsmanship and placing a value on each piece. As ever, the boys will be crossing fingers and toes that their handiwork can deliver a healthy profit.

The brand new series of Find It Fix It Flog It will be broadcast on its new home of Yesterday (Freeview Channel 27), from Monday 25th March 2024, at 8pm. Stream the new series on UKTV Play at uktvplay.co.uk

NEW TV – Shed & Buried: Classic Cars

Shed & Buried supremos Henry Cole and Fuzz Townshend team-up with workshop wonders Allen Millyard and Guy Willison for eight one-hour specials with a focus on four-wheelers.

Henry Cole, Britain’s most enthusiastic TV biker, is turning his attention from two wheels to four this spring, for eight special one-hour episodes of Shed & Buried.

Shed & Buried: Classic Cars sees Henry team-up with Fuzz Townshend once again. The duo will be doing what they do best: digging in the nation’s sheds, barns and outbuildings, this time to (hopefully) find a tidy profit in some vintage motors.

Henry’s love of motorbikes and tractors is well-known, but he still has a soft spot for classic cars. Fuzz – who has an encyclopaedic knowledge of all things automotive – is the perfect partner to help him unearth some classic four-wheelers and turn them into nice little earners.

That’s only half the battle – once their finds are back in the shed, restorer extraordinaire Guy Willison and engineering genius Allen Millyard will be put to the test, turning the rusty wrecks the lads have unearthed into right royal runners.

As always, Henry will need to keep Fuzz focused, to make sure he doesn’t buy an obscure vintage bus or lorry. Fuzz will have to keep an eye on Henry too, as he’s usually done a deal before Fuzz can even lift the bonnet.

“Fuzz might have to steer me away from a few two-wheelers while he’s at it, as old habits die hard” says Henry. “I’m hoping to sneak the odd classic bike past him on the QT”.

We can’t guarantee they’ll turn a profit, but there will be plenty of entertainment, when the team take the restored cars for a test ride in their natural environment.

Shed & Buried: Classic Cars is due to be shown Quest (Freeview channel number 12) starting 7th March 2024.

It will also be available to stream on the discovery+ website www.discoveryplus.co.uk

You can grow old disgracefully on this bike says TV star Henry Cole

Iconic Auctioneers Biggest Ever Motorcycle Sale Of 245 Bikes Includes Tv Celebrity Henry Cole’s Bikes At The Nec 12th November.

Iconic Auctioneers is delighted to bring its largest ever motorcycle sale to the NEC Classic Motor Show next month on 12th November. With a record entry of 245 auction lots, valued at over £1.5 million, among them are two bikes owned by Henry Cole, one of the best-known TV personalities from the world of motorcycles.

Mark Bryan, Motorcycle Manager at Iconic Auctioneers comments: “I am delighted to bring two of the private bikes of the well-known motorcycle celebrity Henry Cole. Without a doubt his bikes will attract huge interest. He is a massive presence in the bike world with some 78 shows to his name.”

The two bikes from Henry Cole, the TV celebrity from the Motorcycle Show and Shed and Buried include a 1961 Dresda Triton 750cc, allegedly used by Dave Degens as an early race bike but no paperwork to prove this – guided at £8,000 – £10,000.

1961 Dresda Triton 750cc. GUIDE PRICE: £8,000 – £10,000

Speaking about the Triton Henry says: “The Dresda Triton was part of my upbringing and to own one has been a privilege. My God it does fly! It is the quintessential Café Racer designed for the ‘Ton-up- Boys’ and is the best of British Hooliganism! You can grow old disgracefully on this bike.”

The second Henry Cole bike is a 2012 Norton Commando 961 SE Café Racer 961cc. This ‘one off’ was built specially for the TV Presenter but comes to auction with zero miles and never started! It even has the factory writing on the headlight ‘Henry Cole’, so it will require recommissioning before use.

2012 Norton Commando 961 SE Café Racer 961cc. GUIDE PRICE: £13,000 – £15,000

Henry says of this bike: “When I bought it, I thought I was buying part of a great British motorcycle future. But of course, the collapse of Norton meant a lot of people including me burnt their fingers. The reason I never used the bike, not even once, was that it was sufficient just to know I owned one the of the 200 that Norton made. You buy stuff like this to reflect your success back to yourself, there is no need to even ride it. Pride of ownership is enough.”

He owns some 40 bikes he says and only rides two and feels that this Norton should be used and enjoyed. “It’s a lovely thing to have. The bike was all about hope for the future of British bike manufacturing when I bought it – an iconic part of what was to be the Great British future.”

British duo set new record 2-up on a motorcycle

Engineering genius Allen Millyard and TV presenter Henry Cole have set a new world record for the “fastest tandem motorcycle” beating the top speed held by an American couple for over 10 years.

Guinness World Records certified their top speed of 183.50 mph (295.31 km/h), giving them a clear margin over American couple Erin Hunter and Andy Sills, who reached 181.42 mph (291.98 km/h) at Bonneville Salt Flats in 2011.

The pair met when Cole was filming The Motorbike Show in 2014 and the idea for the record attempt was hatched during planning for the latest series. On 25th May they headed to Elvington Airfield in North Yorkshire, which has a 3000-metre long runway. On their sixth and last attempt of the day, the friends finally bettered the existing record speed by two miles an hour.

What makes their achievement even more remarkable is that their motorcycle was designed and built by Allen in the single car garage attached to his house.

Ironically their biggest challenge was avoiding going too fast. The Millyard Viper V10 is powered by an 8-litre Dodge sports car engine, producing 500 bhp, which is more than double the power of a modern superbike. It is also three times as heavy, at almost 1400 lb (630 kg), so keeping it under control, particularly without a fairing to protect them from wind blast, required huge focus, skill and determination.

“It felt ridiculously fast” says Allen. “Top marks to Henry for agreeing to do it. He showed complete confidence in my riding ability and my hand-built motorcycle, which is really flattering. And I knew he’d be a reliable pillion and wouldn’t panic, which could destabilise the bike, with disastrous consequences at high speed”.

“I didn’t really think we’d do it, but thanks to Allen and the bike he built in a little garage near Reading, we’re world record holders!” adds Henry. “It’s the biggest rush you’ll ever have!”

Cole and Millyard won’t be resting on their laurels – they are making plans for a rerun, with the target of breaking the 200 mph barrier!

New dates for Henry Cole’s TV treasure hunt

History fans will really dig a brand new five-part series starting on ITV4 from 14 March – Henry Cole’s Great British Treasure Hunt.

Best known for Shed & Buried, Find It Fix It Flog It and The Motorbike Show, Henry will be taking a short break from digging around in sheds in a new quest to unearth ancient artefacts buried beneath Britain’s green and pleasant land.

Joining him will be five dedicated teams of the UK’s top metal detectorists, who have been given a unique opportunity to investigate some of the country’s finest historical sites, getting 48 hours to go where no detectorist has gone before.

Their finds will be assessed and scored by expert judges. Archaeologist Dr Susheela Burford (the show’s Finds Liaison Officer) will evaluate the historical interest and significance of each item, then award a number of points, from five for the most interesting, down to one for the least.

To add some extra excitement, auctioneer and independent valuer Adam Partridge then takes a look and hands out a bonus point for the find with the highest monetary value.

Scores accumulate across the five episodes, shown over successive evenings from Monday to Friday, and whichever duo has the highest at the end of the week wins the prestigious GBTH trophy – and the satisfaction of being judged the best amongst their detectorist peers!

Henry said: “I’m used to unearthing motoring ‘treasure’ in sheds and barns, but literally digging deeper into UK history has opened up a whole new world to me and I’ve met some really amazing people along the way.”

Henry and the detectorist duos start their search at Ardington House in Oxfordshire – built between 1719 and 1721 – before heading off around the country to another location for each following episode. These include the building rumoured to be the Greene Knight’s Castle in the Arthurian story of Sir Gawain and the Greene Knight and one of the world’s most prestigious schools.

Episode one of Henry Cole’s Great British Treasure Hunt will air on ITV4 at 8pm on 14th of March 2022, then daily until Friday 18th March.

Seeking sheds with star quality

Popular automotive restoration TV show Shed and Buried is on a nationwide search for more of the UK’s most interesting sheds, filled with vintage vehicles and motoring memorabilia ripe for rescuing.

Motorcycle fanatic Henry Cole and his best friend, engineering genius Sam Lovegrove, are heading back out on the road as they continue their quest to discover hidden treasure buried in the nation’s sheds, garages, barns and outhouses.

Their hunt for all things car, motorbike, tractor, boat – or any iteration of mechanical curiosity – is just the starting point for the spanner-wielding double act, as they fulfil their need to buy, fix up and sell, with the hope of making a potentially ‘tidy’ profit.

If you, or someone you know, also has a passion for all things automotive and owns a fantastic shed, garage or lock-up that you think may fit the bill for Henry and Sam to come and have a rummage in, then it could feature on the upcoming TV series.

All filming will be strictly adhering to the latest government guidelines, in response to the ongoing coronavirus situation, and every care will be taken to ensure that the location of properties will not be unnecessarily revealed.

Henry Cole’s shed load of advice

There is no higher compliment one man can pay another than this: “Do you want to come and see my shed, mate?”

Henry Cole, host of The Motorbike Show, Junk & Disorderly, Find It Fix It Flog Itand Shed & Buried, introduces readers to the joy of sheds. In his new book, which is out next Thursday (17th September), Henry introduces the idea that a shed is a place to sit, a place to fettle and a place to stash, a spiritual refuge and a state of mind. From construction to maintenance, from foundations to roof to damp-proofing in between (“nobody wants rusty nuts”), here is all the practical information you need to start your own shed odyssey, delivered in Henry’s inimitable style.

“Your shed is your refuge. You need to make that pilgrimage to the bottom of the garden. Whether you’re walking down a muddy track or crunching along a gravel path… Breathe in the fresh air. Then pull open the door, grapple for the light switch, fire up the heaters and turn on the kettle. You’re the king in there.”

Henry covers everything from achieving that musty, oily shed smell (if you know, you know) through shed security and style to socialising (is it a one cuppa shed, or are you happy for invited mates to linger?).

“Sheds are about endeavour. They’re about restoration and preservation: spiritually, mentally and physically. They’re the place where old things get a new lease of life, and where new things – the motor, the light bulb, the telephone – are invented. You can make mistakes in a shed, and that’s where creativity begins, with experimentation and a whole lot of simple tinkering. (And don’t forget the complex etiquette of shed tea!)”

THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF SHEDS by Henry Cole is published by Quercus in hardback & e-book on 17th September 2020, priced £16.99. Visit https://henrycole.tv/ to find out more.

The Motorbike Show rides again

The Motorbike Show returns to ITV4 this spring, with six brand new hour-long episodes.

Now in its 9th season, the popular motorcycle magazine programme, presented by Henry Cole, has proved to be a ratings success since it first aired in 2011.

Viewers can look forward to a mix of their favourite features in each episode, including rides along some of the best biking roads in the UK and Europe, the stories of iconic motorcycles and manufacturers, and a restoration. Henry will be giving a classic bike a new lease of life, with a lot of help from his  regular restoration buddies Sam Lovegrove and Allen Millyard.

Episode 1 is scheduled to be shown on ITV4 in mid-April.
