Ducati Multistrada V4 RS, when Superbike meets touring

In the fourth episode of the Ducati World Première 2024 web series Ducati presents the new V4 RS the sportiest, most sophisticated and exclusive Multistrada ever created by the Bologna based manufacturer. Produced in a numbered series, the Multistrada V4 RS is the latest addition to the family which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year and is equipped with the Desmosedici Stradale engine, derived from that of the Panigale V4.

Thanks to the V4 equipped with desmodromic distribution, the Multistrada V4 RS offers unique performance and riding sensations, maintaining the balance that has always distinguished the family. The experience is made memorable by the unmistakable sound  of the Desmosedici Stradale with dry clutch and Akrapovič silencer, and by the spirited and exciting power delivery. Sensations also guaranteed by the chassis of the sportiest Multistrada in the family, thanks to Öhlins suspension, single-sided aluminium swingarm and forged rims.

The most demanding motorcyclists will appreciate the technical and stylistic details that make it a unique motorcycle in personality and substance. The RS logo, which becomes a real characterising element of the model, was designed by the Centro Stile and is shown in the livery, on the key and in the dashboard graphics. The slim and streamlined tail, designed exclusively for this bike, helps to make it even sportier.
The Multistrada V4 RS is a model in which every component, every detail – from the electronic package equipped with radar technology to the very light titanium rear frame – was chosen with a single objective: to create the sportiest touring motorcycle ever. The most exciting Multistrada ever created by Ducati.

Sporty style
The Ducati Multistrada V4 RS combines the unmistakable Multistrada line, elegant and dynamic, with technical solutions that recall the technologies used in racing, typical of Borgo Panigale’s super sports bikes. The name RS has exactly this meaning, recalling another motorcycle in Ducati history – the Monster S4 RS – born according to the same inspiring principles.

The various carbon fibre components such as the front mudguard, the hand guards (designed specifically for this model), the heat shields and the front “beak”, create a play of contrasts with the Iceberg White livery, enriched by various references to the colour of the Desmosedici MotoGP.

The slender and lightweight techno-polymer tail integrates the passenger handles and defines a sporty, sophisticated and unmistakable side view. The titanium seat support frame is a component of great technical elegance which accentuates its sportiness and allows a weight saving of 2.5 kg compared to the standard one.
The Ducati Multistrada V4 RS is produced in a numbered series. The number is shown on a black anodised aluminium plate, embellished with the Italian flag, applied to the triple clamp.

Superbike engine
The Multistrada V4 RS is the only one in the family to adopt the 1,103 cc Desmosedici Stradale engine. To combine the smoothness and regularity typical of the Multistrada with the personality and sporty characteristics of the Panigale and the Streetfighter, Ducati has intervened on the V4 obtaining a fluid and regular power delivery curve at low revs and at the same time, thanks to desmodromic distribution, exciting near the limiter. A personality that is also expressed thanks to the exhaust tone, which is deep at low levels and exhilarating like on Superbikes during acceleration at high rpm.

These objectives were achieved by adopting the air filter from the Panigale V4 R, which is more permeable and sportier, and an exhaust system with Akrapovič silencer developed specifically for the Multistrada V4 RS.

In this configuration, Euro 5+ homologated, the Desmosedici Stradale engine develops a maximum power of 180 hp, with limiter at 13,500 rpm. This value was chosen to guarantee sporting performance while maintaining the balance that has always distinguished the Multistrada V4 since its first version.

To make the most of the performance of the road Desmosedici, sportier and characterised by greater acceleration, the final ratio has been shortened while keeping the gear ratios unchanged.

Finally, as on the Panigale V4 SP2 and Streetfighter V4 SP2, the Multistrada V4 RS also features a STM-EVO SBK dry clutch made from billet aluminium, with a specific configuration of springs and slipper ramps. This component, which smooths out riding during braking and engagement phases, also contributes to enriching the exhaust sound with its typical metallic timbre when the clutch is disengaged.

Among the benefits of the dry clutch, we highlight the possibility of increasing performance by using Ducati Corse Performance Powered by Shell Advance oil, the result of the collaboration between Ducati Corse and Shell in Superbike and MotoGP.

To improve the thermal comfort of the engine, the Desmosedici Stradale has been designed to deactivate the rear bank when the bike is stationary, in neutral and with the engine temperature above 70°. Again to offer greater comfort, on the coldest days the upwashes, the ducts that channel fresh air to the rider’s legs, can be closed.

The maintenance interval for checking valve clearance on the Multistrada V4 RS is every 30,000 km.Electronics
The Multistrada V4 RS is equipped with the advanced and sophisticated electronic package of the Multistrada V4 S, which includes, among other features, standard radar technology on both the front and rear, which enables the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) functionality and Blind Spot Detection (BSD).

The electronic equipment of the Multistrada V4 RS, thanks to the information obtained from the Bosch inertial platform, is made up of 4 Power Modes (Full, High, Medium, Low), Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Engine Brake Control (EBC) and Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up&Down.
All these systems have been calibrated for the characteristics and intended use of the model and integrated into four Riding Modes, namely Race, Sport, Touring, Urban.

On the V4 RS, the Full Power Mode (associated by default with the Race Riding Mode, characterised by a chequered flag above the name) is introduced for the first time in the Multistrada family; this delivers maximum power in all gears, with a prompt response from the throttle. The other Power Modes have been calibrated for use on the Multistrada V4. In particular:

  • High (associated by default with Sport Riding Mode) offers maximum power in 4th, 5th and 6th gear with a slight reduction in torque in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, with prompt throttle response.
  • Medium (associated by default with Touring Riding Mode) also offers maximum power in 4th, 5th and 6th gear, with a slight reduction in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, but with a sweeter throttle response.
  • Low (default in Urban Riding Mode) with power reduced to 84 kW (114 hp) and a smooth throttle response.

The Multistrada V4 RS is also equipped with EBC (Engine Brake Control) adjustable on three levels, which allows the rider to customize the engine braking depending on riding style and context.

The greater sportiness of the electronic package of the V4 RS is highlighted by the new graphics of the dashboard, which presents a control panel on the main screen with functionality similar to the Infomode Track of the Panigale V4 and Streetfighter V4. This drop-down menu displays the levels set for DTC, ABS and DWC in the selected riding mode. Furthermore, the intervention of Ducati Traction Control and Ducati Wheelie Control is highlighted by a flashing of the corresponding drop-down element and the lighting of the upper right corner of the dashboard.

The TFT dashboard with 6.5″ screen, characterised on the Multistrada V4 RS by dedicated graphics, enables you to view the map navigator thanks to Ducati Connect, which allows you to mirror your mobile device. Precisely to support this functionality, the smartphone compartment has forced ventilation, to cool the phone during intensive use of the navigation functions and while charging.Chassis and ergonomics
The chassis of the Multistrada V4 RS is developed around the 17″ front wheel, which ensures great precision and reactivity in sporty riding. This choice led to the choice of a monocoque aluminium frame different from the Multistrada V4 S and Rally to obtain a different inclination of the steering head (25.75° compared to 24.5°) defining the trail and wheelbase values in function of the greater sportiness of the bike, similar to what has already been done on the V4 Pikes Peak.

The Marchesini forged aluminium wheels, 2.7 kg lighter than those of the V4 S, make the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle more effective. Diablo Rosso IV Corsa tyres, in the 120/70 front and 190/55 rear sizes, offer excellent grip during acceleration and a strong sensation of contact with the ground in the centre of the curve.

The choice of Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspensions goes in the direction of guaranteeing the best performance in sporting use thanks to the use of an “event based” system, as on the Panigale V4 S and Streetfighter V4 S, which self-adjusts based on individual riding style. The system, already used on the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, has been recalibrated to obtain the best balance between comfort in relaxed riding and support in sporty riding.

In particular, in the Touring and Sport Riding Modes the calibrations of the dynamic system have been modified to improve comfort during relaxed riding and at the same time support when having fun on mixed mountain terrain. Furthermore, to improve riding dynamics even at full load, hydraulic braking has been increased when the rider selects higher damping levels in the various Riding Modes, in the various Load Modes with luggage and passenger.

The braking system derives directly from that of the Panigale V4. At the front, the system includes 330 mm diameter discs and Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers, similar to the Multistrada V4 S, to which are added the pads of the Panigale V4. At the rear the system includes a single 265 mm diameter disc on which a Brembo floating caliper works. The control, with regressive kinematics, has a smaller pumping element, thus improving power and modulation. The system is managed by the Bosch-Brembo 10.3ME Cornering ABS system.

In addition to the carbon fibre and titanium elements, a small battery has been adopted to further reduce weight. In this way, 3 kg are saved compared to the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak.

The new V4 RS offers sportier ergonomics than the Multistrada V4, with higher and further back footrests to increase the maximum lean angle. The handlebar, rigidly fixed to the plate to improve the riding feeling, is lower, narrower and has a less accentuated curvature. The new, softer grips have a sportier design.

This ergonomic combination translates into a better feeling in sporty riding, while maintaining a good level of comfort at the same time. Comfort has in fact been the subject of great attention, to maintain the best synthesis between sport and tourism of the Multistrada V4 RS.Accessories
The Ducati Performance catalogue offers various accessories to enhance the characteristics of the motorbike and make it unique from an aesthetic point of view. Motorcyclists who want to increase the versatility of the Multistrada V4 RS will find various luggage options, from plastic or aluminium side cases to tank and passenger seat bags and various oversized windshields.

To emphasise its sporting personality, the catalogue also offers billet aluminium parts such as levers, footrests, brake and clutch reservoirs or fuel tank and oil filler caps. There are also many carbon fibre details to lighten and make the image of the Multistrada V4 RS even more aggressive.

Colours and availability
The motorcycle will be available in dealerships in the Ducati network starting from January 2024 in a single version, which includes front and rear radar as standard in the Iceberg White livery.

As on all models of the Multistrada family, on the Multistrada V4 RS Ducati also offers the exclusive “4Ever Multistrada” warranty, valid for 4 years with unlimited mileage, guaranteed by the entire network of dealers of the Bologna-based company on European territory.

The Easy Lift function now available also on the Ducati Multistrada V4 S

The Easy Lift function is now also arriving on the Multistrada V4 S, making it easier to lift the bike from the side stand.

Introduced with the Multistrada V4 Rally, the function acts on the suspension hydraulics by fully opening the valves of the semi-active units for around three minutes when the ignition is turned on. In this way the front and rear suspension are softened, making it easier to lift the bike from the stand.

Confirming the continued attention that Ducati reserves for its enthusiasts, the update is made available both as a standard feature on new bikes and, free of charge, for those who already own a Multistrada V4 S. Customers will be contacted through the MyDucati App ( downloadable here) and via email and they can then go to their trusted Ducati Service to receive updates*.

This function increases the accessibility of the Multistrada V4 S for riders of different builds, adding to the possibility of changing the seat position to two different heights. These are combined with saddles of different height and the motorcycle lowering set offered as accessories.

The Easy Lift function adds to the Minimum Preload in order to make the Multistrada V4 accessible to the widest possible public. Introduced in 2022, this function allows you to reduce the height of the bike by resetting the shock absorber preload.  This makes it easier and safer to put your feet on the ground when manoeuvring at low speed, especially with a passenger on board.

The Multistrada V4, the technological flagship of the Borgo Panigale manufacturer, was the first motorcycle in the world to be equipped with front and rear radar. A solution that has made it possible to introduce the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems, which improve riding comfort and safety, especially on long journeys. The Multistrada V4 has also introduced the Phone Mirroring solution, which transforms the dashboard into a colour map navigator with all the necessary information for riding the bike. This solution has been subject to continuous refinements and updates, all transferred free of charge to Ducatisti who already own a Multistrada V4.

Along with the radar system and the Easy Lift, Ducati has introduced many other firsts in the motorcycle field through the Multistrada family, like the Riding Modes in the 2010 Model Year. The goal of the Bologna-based manufacturer is to improve the bikes by anticipating the wishes of Ducatisti, introducing new features and bringing updates to the bikes already on the road. A mission that is accomplished through continuous investment in research and development, which places Ducati among the most technologically advanced companies in the sector.

The Multistrada V4 also has benchmark maintenance intervals , with valve clearance checks set every 60,000 km and all models in the family come with the exclusive “4Ever Ducati” warranty, valid for 4 years with unlimited mileage**.

The Multistrada V4 family, comprising the Multistrada V4 S, Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak and Multistrada V4 Rally, allows Ducatisti to travel without borders in complete serenity, being able to count on a network of over 800 official dealers in more than 90 markets.

The Roadside Assistance programme, offered on all Multistrada V4s, provides roadside assistance, transport for rider and passenger, repairs, a replacement vehicle and accommodation in four-star hotels in case of faults occurring during the warranty period.

* The software update campaign will start from EU countries and gradually extend to America, Australia, Japan and APAC countries

In its first year on the market, the Multistrada V4 was able to confirm the expectations created since the day of its presentation, establishing itself as an ideal motorcycle for any kind of trip.

The fourth generation of Multistrada has conquered many new Ducatisti. The Multistrada V4 is effective on all types of road, thanks to the dynamic qualities and smooth delivery of the V4 Granturismo engine, which guarantee a sporty and exhilarating ride on mixed roads and provide easy off-road riding. The bike features state-of-the-art technology : it is the first motorcycle in the world equipped with front and rear radar, with Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) systems which represent a precious aid to riding comfort and safety, especially on long journeys. In addition, the Multistrada V4 has benchmark maintenance intervals with valve clearance control set every 60,000 km and all models of the family have the exclusive “4Ever Ducati” warranty, valid for 4 years with unlimited mileage*.

The success of the Ducati Multistrada V4 is proven not only by the feedback from the specialized press, but also by the satisfaction of the enthusiasts who have chosen to purchase it. This is a further incentive for Ducati to continue developing the project in 2022. The main goal, pursued through constant research and development work, is to continuously improve the bike by taking into account all of the needs of the Ducatisti, ensuring available updates and introducing new features on the production bikes.

The first new feature for the Multistrada V4 family in 2022 concerns the colour range of the S version, which expands with the addition of the new Iceberg White livery . It is a glossy white colour that enhances the refined lines of the bike. The Iceberg White Multistrada V4 S will be available in Ducati dealerships starting from March and joins the Ducati Red and Aviator Grey colour options. The bike can be ordered in four different trims (Essential, Radar, Travel & Radar, Full), which can be viewed in the dedicated section of the Ducati website.

For the electronic package, the main update lies in a new semi-automatic function of the electronic suspension for the Multistrada V4 S, called Minimum Preload. This feature allows you to reduce the height of the motorcycle and makes it easier and safer to place your feet on the ground during city use or when manoeuvring at low speed, especially with a passenger on board.
Another important software update concerns the interaction between the rider and the bike, which is now more functional thanks to the improvements implemented in the Infotainment (Ducati Connect) and HMI (Human-Machine Interface) areas.

The new package of updates is available both as a standard feature on new motorcycles and free of charge for those who already own a Multistrada V4 S, confirming the continuous attention that the Bologna-based manufacturer reserves for its enthusiasts. Multistrada owners who can take advantage of these new features will be contacted gradually through the MyDucati App and via email and will then be able to go to their trusted Ducati Service to receive the updates**.

The improvements made by Ducati to the Multistrada V4 project for 2022 also concern the Ducati Performance accessories line, which is enriched with two important elements: the lowered suspension kit and a set of aluminium bags.

The lowered suspension kit, available as accessory*** for the Multistrada V4 S, consists of fork springs, shock absorber springs and side stand, designed to reduce the saddle height from the ground by 20 mm. Equipped with the lowered suspension kit, the Multistrada V4 offers greater confidence at low speeds, while maintaining the dynamic characteristics typical of this model. With the introduction of the lowered suspension kit, the seat height range of the Multistrada V4 is even wider. The low saddle (-30 mm) and raised saddle (+15 mm) accessory gives the rider the possibility to choose in a range between 790 and 875 mm to find the configuration that best suits his physical characteristics and riding style.

The latest addition to the Multistrada family is designed for motorcyclists who have a strong aptitude for travelling. In fact, starting from April 2022, the aluminium side panniers and top case, designed by the Centro Stile Ducati and made in collaboration with Givi, will be included in the catalogue. The considerable total capacity (76 litres for the side panniers and 41 litres for the top case) allows motorcyclists to take everything they need with them for each trip. The cases are designed to be filled from above, in order to maximize capacity and facilitate loading and unloading.

To further increase practicality, internal bags  are also available as an accessory, made of resistant waterproof fabric with heat-sealed seams and customized with the Ducati Performance logo. These comfortable bags are created to make the most of the available space and keep everything in order inside the cases. The practical handles also allow you to carry them as hand luggage, making them a versatile product, capable of optimizing comfort and functionality on every journey.

The sportiest Multistrada ever: Ducati unveils the new V4 Pikes Peak

The third episode of the Ducati World Première 2022 was dedicated to the online reveal of the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, namely the model that best represents, since its debut in the range, the true essence of sportiness within the Ducati dual bikes family. The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak takes centre-stage for a public of passionate enthusiasts not only as the sportiest Multistrada ever but also as the most powerful model in the whole crossover segment.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak takes life around the excellent Multistrada V4 platform : where performance, smoothness of operation and reliability offered by the V4 Granturismo engine, together with the contained weight, the ease of handling, the comfort for rider and passenger alike, state-of-the-art equipment and electronics are part of the cornerstones of the Multistrada V4 family. Starting from these solid foundations, the new V4 Pikes Peak was developed by introducing significant changes in terms of chassis set-up, premium ergonomics, electronic controls as well as numerous dedicated components, which give the bike a distinctly sportier attitude compared to the Multistrada V4. Ducati, once again, promises to delight a wide range of riders looking for the purest performance within the dual bikes universe.

The design work behind this new project develops starting from the peculiar elements of the Multistrada V4 family, integrating them with the two elements that mainly identify this Pikes Peak version from an aesthetic and functional perspective, namely the 17” front wheel and the single-sided swingarm. The racing soul of the bike is intensified by the dedicated “Pikes Peak” livery, faithfully inspired both in colours and graphics by that of the Desmosedici GP ’21; even the number plates on both sides of the fuel tank contribute to highlight the deep link with the world of competitions.

With the aim to further emphasise its sporty-oriented attitude the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak comes with a wide range of components made of carbon fibre in addition to the Akrapovič titanium and carbon silencer (road-approved). Others distinctive aesthetic elements are the low smoked plexi, Öhlins front fork anodised gold legs, two-tone Black and Red rear saddle embellished with the V4 logo and the Ducati Corse badge applied to the “beak”.

The chassis compartment of the new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is part of the revolution. With the respect to the Multistrada V4, it has in fact been significantly revised. First and foremost, it has been developed around the 17” front wheel, which ensures the rider great precision and responsiveness. The new machine is fitted with sports road tyres (sizes: 120/70 front; 190/55-17 rear) and mounts Marchesini forged aluminum rims , 2.7 kg lighter than those of the Multistrada V4 S, which make the dynamic behaviour of the vehicle therefore more effective and contribute to the reduction of the total weight amount of 4 kg compared to the Multistrada V4 S. Additionally, Öhlins Smart EC 2.0 suspension also guarantees brilliant performance in sports riding, through the use of an “event based” mode, the same adopted by the Panigale V4 S and the Streetfighter V4 S, which automatically adjusts the setting according to the user’s riding style.

The aluminum monocoque frame has been refreshed with the precise objective of achieving a different inclination of the steering head (25.75° compared to the 24.5° of the Multistrada V4), not to mention that trail and wheelbase geometry have been recalibrated according to the different uses of the motorcycle.

The braking system of the new V4 Pikes Peak is at the top of the segment and derives directly from that of the Panigale V4. At the front, the system includes 330 mm diameter discs and Brembo Stylema monobloc calipers, like the Multistrada V4 S, to which are added the pads of the Panigale V4. At the rear, the system features a single 265 mm diameter disc with a Brembo floating caliper.

The new Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak stands out even for its dedicated ergonomics, specifically designed to ensure maximum control and optimise lean angles. With respect to the Multistrada V4 the riding position has been completely refreshed: the footpegs, for example, are higher and moved back to increase the maximum lean angle, while the handlebar is lower, narrower and has contained curved bars. The final result is that the rider benefits of an even better feeling in sporty riding while maintaining an excellent level of comfort.

The new Ducati Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is powered by the most powerful engine within the category, the admired V4 Granturismo, achieving 170 hp with a maximum torque of 125 Nm at 8,750 rpm. This engine, specifically designed by Ducati for the Multistrada V4 family, results extremely lightweight – 66.7 kg only – and compact. Thanks to these features Ducati engineers create an uncompromised equilibrium with perfect mass centralization. With a displacement of 1160 cc, the V4 Granturismo engine ensures top-of-the-segment power and torque levels. In addition, the V4 Granturismo represents also a reference in terms of versatility and reliability, featuring a record-breaking maintenance intervals, with valve play checks scheduled every 60,000 km.

The V4 Granturismo engine has been optimised to intensify the characteristics of the bike and features some innovations. Among these, the introduction of the Race Riding Mode , which represents a first for Multistrada models. The Race option is added to a more racing strategy for the limiter, which intervenes more gradually than in the Multistrada V4, in order to alert the biker in advance and allow him a more effective sporty drive in terms of gear changes within the high area of the rev counter. The quickshifter also has a dedicated strategy that allows extremely aggressive downshifts, as well as the implementation of an even more direct throttle response in High Power Mode.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak inherits the latest generation and sophisticated electronic package of the Multistrada V4 S, which includes, among others, the as-standard radar technology both at the front and at the rear, which offers Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Blind Spot Detection (BSD) functionality.

The 6.5” TFT dashboard, also available as standard on the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak, allows the user to view the map navigator thanks to the advanced Ducati Connect system, which allows to mirror the rider’s smartphone.

Electronics innovations are, also in this case, aimed at obtaining a better sporty driving experience. In addition to the introduction of the Race Riding Mode, Ducati Wheelie Control on the Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak has an updated strategy that offers an even better response and a more accurate control during dynamic riding. ABS Cornering has also been configured to be safe and performing in whatever riding situation, even in the sportiest.

The Multistrada V4 Pikes Peak is a technologically advanced motorcycle, designed for those who love the thrill of sporty riding, especially on mountainous twisties or between the kerbs of a race track.

The bike will be available at the Ducati dealers network starting at December 2021 in the Radar trim, which is fitted with both front and rear radar system.

In Europe, Ducati offers the customers the “4Ever Multistrada”, the 4-year exclusive warranty available for all Multistrada models. It has unlimited mileage and is guaranteed by the entire Ducati dealer network.

Ducati Performance catalogue features a wide range of accessories to enhance the characteristics of the bike and make it a unique gem.

V4 Granturismo: the engine for the next generation of Ducati Multistrada

A new era begins in Borgo Panigale as Ducati presents to the public the new V4 Granturismo, the engine that will equip the long-awaited new generation of Ducati Multistrada, which is going to be unveiled on Wednesday 4 November.

An extremely compact, lightweight, high-performance, torque-rich engine designed to meet the needs required in “adventouring” use without neglecting emotion and sportiness.

Built with latest-generation technology as well as first-in-class materials available, in order to guarantee both durability and reliability, the V4 Granturismo stands out for its record-braking maintenance intervals for a motorcycle engine and has been created as the heart of a high-performance and dynamic bike, ready to explore every corner of the planet with its owner.

The engine was presented to the public  with a video in which Claudio Domenicali – Ducati CEO – and the engineers and technicians who followed its development reveal all its secrets and features to the Ducati enthusiasts.

Every single technical choice made during the development of the V4 Granturismo project have the aim of ensuring maximum fluidity of operation combined with a substantial extension of maintenance intervals.

The new distribution includes a spring valve return system, that brings the maintenance intervals of the V4 Granturismo to 60,000 km. Figures obtained thanks to the in-depth expertise Ducati acquired in the use of materials, treatments and technical solutions developed around the Desmodromic system. All this, applied to a spring valve return system which stresses less the components if compared to the Desmo, brought to set an outstanding milestone never set before by a motorcycle engine. In addition, the engine ensures great regularity of operation at low revs and low loads, without forgetting the outright performance, the power at high revs and the reach of an authentic sports engine: The V4 Granturismo delivers 125 kW (170 hp) of power at 10,500 rpm, and a maximum torque of 125 Nm (12.7 Kgm) at 8,750 rpm. All this respecting the stringent Euro 5 homologation norms.

With its 66.7 kg of weight, the V4 Granturismo can boast a record lightness, being 1,2 kg lighter than the Testastretta twin-cylinder used on the previous Multistrada 1260. The 1,158 cc displacement came out as being the perfect point of connection in terms of performance, lightness and dimension of a V4 engine, capable of being incredibly light and compact. Compared to the previous generation engine, the V4 Granturismo results 85mm shorter, 95mm lower and only 20mm wider. This compact layout allowed Ducati engineers to house the engine in the frame more effectively and centrally in order to positively influence the position of the bike’s center of gravity, with all the resulting benefits.

The V4 Granturismo also inherits some elements derived from the experience gained by Ducati in the racing world, such as the decision to adopt a counter-rotating crankshaft, which improves the handling and agility of the bike, and to exploit the “Twin Pulse” technology, capable of offering a full-bodied but perfectly manageable power delivery at every speed.

To avoid a drop in thermal comfort due to the heat transmitted by the rear cylinders, the V4 Granturismo adopts the strategy of deactivating the rear bank at idle. In this way, when the bike is stationary, the combustion process in the cylinders is halted and this improves the thermal comfort of the rider and passenger thanks to the lowering of temperatures while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption.

Front radar

Ducati announces the entry into production of the world’s first motorcycle equipped with front and rear radar technology: the new Multistrada V4.

Production of the Multistrada V4 has begun at the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale: the first motorcycle to use front and rear radar technology. The Multistrada V4 marks an epochal turning point for the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer and will be officially presented on 4 November.

For the fourth generation of the Multistrada, Ducati has developed a new, light and compact V4 engine, designed to meet the needs required for “adventouring” use without neglecting emotion and sportiness. The complete redesign made it possible to reach record-breaking maintenance intervals for the world of two wheels. All the details of this new engine will be revealed on 15 October.

Ducati brings radars on production bikes, confirming what was anticipated in 2018 ( link to the press release of April 2018 here). The adoption of these systems promises to be a true revolution for the world of two wheels, marking a new level of excellence in terms of comfort and riding assistance, especially on long motorway journeys.

Radars are advanced aid systems capable of supporting and making riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the motorcycle. Ducati’s interest in this type of systems dates back to 2016, when the Company worked in collaboration with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano to experiment with this type of systems. This first experience has confirmed the applicability of this kind of technology to vehicles on two wheels, and has pushed Ducati to the creation of a complete package of riding assistance using two radars that, within four years, has been developed and produced in close cooperation with Bosch, a top-level technology partner, and sees its first application on the new Multistrada V4.

Each radar has compact dimensions (70 x 60 x 28 mm, similar to a modern action camera) and integrates perfectly into the bike, weighing only 190 grams.

The radar positioned in the front of the vehicle controls the operation of the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), which by means of controlled braking and acceleration automatically adjusts the distance (selectable on four levels) from other vehicles when riding at a speed between 30 and 160 km/h. This car-derived system has been evolved and developed according to the dynamics and ergonomics of a two-wheeled vehicle. In particular, the authority of the system in terms of deceleration and acceleration has been limited in order to ensure the rider can maintain constant control of the vehicle in any situation. The system allows for more comfortable riding, especially on long motorway journeys.

Rear radar

The rear radar, on the other hand, is able to detect and report vehicles positioned in the so-called blind spot, i.e. the area not visible either directly by the rider or through the rear-view mirror. The BSD (Blind Spot Detection) system also signals the approaching from behind of vehicles at high speed.

To underline the technical-scientific value of the research project, carried out jointly by Ducati engineers and researchers and undergraduates from the Politecnico di Milano, a patent application relating to the control algorithms of this system was filed in May 2017. In June 2017, a scientific publication was presented at the IEEE – Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV) in Redondo Beach, California.
