Triumph To Power Moto2 For Another Three Years

Triumph Motorcycles will continue to provide their record-breaking 765cc triple powerplants as Exclusive Engine Supplier to the FIM Moto2™ World Championship for another three seasons, from 2022-2024.

Since the start of the 2019 season, Triumph Motorcycles has provided all of the teams with race-tuned 765cc triples, each of which is based on the class-leading Street Triple RS engine. With developments that allow it to breathe more freely, rev harder and deliver a peak power output of more than 140PS (an increase of over 17% on the production engine).

This 765cc triple brought to the category a much-welcomed boost in power, transforming the performance and level of competition.

Following Dorna’s intent to bring the Moto2™ series closer to MotoGP™, the increase in power and torque, combined with a more advanced electronics package, has provided a more relevant training and development ground, whilst enhancing the overall racing in its own right.

In the last two years Moto2™ graduates have gone on to take podiums and victories in their first seasons in the premier MotoGP class: 2019 Moto2™ World Champion Alex Marquez taking a pair of second places in 2020, and title rival Brad Binder with a victory also in 2020 and more recently in Austria 2021. Jorge Martin took his first Moto2™ victory in 2020, followed a year later with his maiden MotoGP™ win and a further two podiums in 2021. These incredible results go to prove how Moto2™ has become the natural springboard for MotoGP™ that Dorna envisaged.

Redefining the category, records have also fallen across the board. As well as 14 different race winners since 2019 there have been lap records set at 34 events, including records which have been broken and re-broken year-on-year, and the first ever 300+km/h top speed for a Moto2™ machine. The record stands at 301.8km/h at Phillip Island, Australia.

Reflecting these great successes, the wonderful feedback and partnerships we have had with the riders and their teams, and the incredible response from Triumph fans across the world, we have decided in partnership with Dorna, along with the continuing support of Externpro, to extend our relationship and sign a new contract for another three years of racing.

Steve Sargent, Triumph Motorcycles Chief Product Officer
”Moto2 has been the perfect environment to showcase, and prove the reliability and performance advantages of, our triple engines, where we have seen the top 20 qualifying times consistently come within a second of each other. Not only has it raised our profile and credibility on the world stage, for me the success of Moto2 has also been an incredible catalyst, reigniting the passion for racing within Triumph motorcycles. I am delighted to have played a part in this landmark activity for Triumph and excited to see the extension to another 3 seasons. We are committed to delivering further improvements to the performance of the engines, which we are sure will be appreciated by both the riders and the teams.

Carlos Ezpeleta, Dorna Sports Managing Director, said:
“Our first years together have been a wonderful success and I’d like to thank Triumph for their help and hard work over these first three years – especially during the pandemic. The FIM, IRTA and Dorna are happy with the results this project has shown and it’s validated the consistency of the steps between Moto3™, Moto2™ and MotoGP™. Overall, we are pleased with the partnership and we look forward to three more exciting years together.”

Category-defining from the very beginning

Light, fast, fun, agile and stylish – the Street Triple has been a game-changing bike in the motorcycle world since its launch in 2007 with its distinctive character and thrilling triple engine. It redefined the middleweight sports category, establishing itself as the first choice for its combination of aggressive looks, light intuitive handling, thrilling power delivery, and its unique triple soundtrack.

Evolving from its renowned 675cc triple to an even more exhilarating 765cc in 2017, the Street Triple once again redefined the category, becoming the lightest bike in class, with all new state-of-the-art technology, high specification chassis and Triumph’s signature exceptional standard of finish and detailing.

And now, for 2020, the new Street Triple RS has been designed to set the benchmark all over again with a major step up in performance, much more aggressive attitude and even better ride-enhancing technology. Combined with its trademark agile, dynamic handling, and high specification suspension, brakes and tyres, the new Street Triple RS is perfect for the street and the track.

A major step up in performance – more power, more torque

For a major step up in performance, the new Street Triple RS benefits from a significant Euro 5 update to its characterful 765cc triple engine, developed by Triumph’s expert Moto2TM engine team. The result is a significant increase in torque, which is now 9% higher in the mid-range, peaking at an even higher 79Nm at 9,350rpm. The new exhaust balance pipe smooths the torque curve for exciting, usable torque from low down and across the entire rev range.

Power is also up by 9% in the mid-range, peaking at 123PS at 11,750rpm, making the new Street Triple RS a totally addictive ride. Engine updates include a new exhaust cam optimised for more mid-range performance, and new higher precision machining on the crank shaft, clutch and balancer, which lowers inertia and reduces engine mass.

The throttle is also now even more responsive, as a result of a 7% reduction in rotational inertia, which, combined with the increase in torque across the rev range, delivers a notable improvement in immediacy.

There is also a new silencer on the Street Triple RS, which is now freer flowing due to the twin catalyst system, reducing restriction and lowering emissions. It’s finished off beautifully with a premium sporty carbon fibre end cap, which delivers a significantly improved, more distinctive triple sound. This comes from the exhaust system refinements and the all new intake duct, which together improves the crispness and purity of the tone, with a smoother balance between intake and silencer sound.

The smooth, refined gearbox on the new Street Triple RS has short 1st and 2nd gear ratios, delivering exceptional acceleration performance and slick gear changes. Higher precision machining also enables the removal of the anti-backlash gears, reducing mass and adding further refinement. Plus, the Street Triple RS retains its high specification slip and assist clutch, for a really light feel, reducing clutch lever effort and improving rider comfort and control.

Much more aggressive attitude, poise and style

Now with a significant update to its iconic styling, the new Street Triple RS has a much more aggressive new look. The LED headlights are all new, with a striking new shape and a sharper and more purposeful style. They are also now whiter and brighter, making them much more conspicuous. The Daytime Running Lights (DRLs – market applicable) have an all new, even more distinctive design, which also increases visibility.

The new Street Triple RS now has all new bodywork, which is more angular, more sporty, and with much cleaner lines. The new fly screen and air intake are now more pronounced, echoing the shape of the new DRL, plus the side panels, rear unit, seat cowl and belly pan are all new and distinctly different.

The silencer has also been restyled for the 2020 model, to be more sporty and compact, with a beautiful carbon fibre finisher with Triumph badge branding. Plus, there’s enhanced detailing across the whole motorcycle, with new contemporary mirrors, a new branded handlebar clamp, and more harmonised component finishes, including blacked out control plates and rear footrest hangers, plus satin metal heel guards and silencer finish. And, being the top of the range, the Street Triple RS has the highest level of finish of all the Street Triples. Now with a new Titanium Silver main frame, matching the finish used on the Speed Triple models.

For even more contemporary style, the new Street Triple RS is presented in two different colour schemes: Matt Jet Black with Aluminium Silver and Yellow decals, or Silver Ice with Diablo Red and Aluminium Silver decals. Both paint scheme options include hand-painted Diablo Red wheel pinstripes and an Aluminium Silver rear sub-frame.

Even better technology

On top of its already exceptionally high standard of technology, which leads the category, the new Street Triple RS now features an even better technology specification. The TFT system now has enhanced functionality with the MyTriumph connectivity system software installed and enabled, ready to be used with the accessory-fit Bluetooth module. This enables GoPro interaction, turn-by-turn navigation and phone and music operation via the ergonomically optimised switch cubes, and displayed on the TFT screen. It also features new style 2nd generation graphic schemes, in four different styles, and four different colours. The TFT screen angle can be adjusted for optimum visibility to suit rider height.

The latest Triumph Shift Assist, up and down quickshifter, has also now been added as standard to the new Street Triple RS, making the bike much more capable, particularly on track. This enables smooth comfortable gear changes while maintaining the accelerator position, which reduces rider fatigue.

The five improved riding modes (Road, Rain, Sport, Track and Rider configurable) have now been optimised to suit the bike’s higher level of performance, for maximum rider control. These modes adjust throttle response, ABS and traction control settings, and can easily be selected whilst riding. Rain mode restricts power to 100PS for enhanced safety and control.

Complementing the new technology, the Street Triple RS retains its extremely high level of standard specification, including ride-by-wire, adjustable ABS and switchable traction control.

Maximum street and track capability

As the lightest bike in its class, the new Street Triple RS has an incredible power-to-weight ratio that is key to its new category leading performance, making this a very agile, exhilarating and accessible bike for all riders. It also has the lightest wheels in the class, contributing to the Street Triple’s agility and precise, engaged handling.

The iconic gullwing swingarm delivers torsional stiffness and lateral flexibility, which maximises stability at higher speed, while its optimised pivot position provides natural resistance to compressing the RSU under hard acceleration. Together these enable tight corner exits and the Street Triple’s precise chassis behaviour.

Suspension is extremely high specification on the new Street Triple RS, with fully adjustable 41mm Showa big piston front forks, with 115mm travel, and fully adjustable Öhlins STX40 piggyback reservoir monoshock rear suspension unit, with 131mm rear wheel travel.

For incredible stopping power, the Street Triple RS features high specification Brembo M50 4-piston radial monobloc front calipers and a Brembo ratio and span adjustable brake lever, plus a Brembo sliding rear caliper.

The tyres are Pirelli’s latest generation high performance Diablo Supercorsa SP v3 tyres, delivering race track performance and excellent grip and stability, from fully street legal tyres.

And finally, for more comfortable pillion ergonomics, the pillion seat is now higher than the previous generation, providing improved leg space.

Triumph Motorcycles announces partnership with Spyder Motorcycles

Fans of Triumph Motorcycles can now enjoy the thrill of the open road on a leased or rented Triumph, thanks to the manufacturer’s new partnership with Spyder Motorcycles.

Spyder, which offers motorbike hire, short-term leasing and fly-and-ride tours, is now offering the Triumph Scrambler 1200, Speed Twin, Street Triple RS and the Tiger 1200 and 800 XRX models to lease or hire in the UK and across Europe.

Riders can enjoy trouble-free motorcycling on the machines – all covered by fully comprehensive insurance – for as little as a day, a week or more.

In addition to rental, Spyder Motorcycles also offers a convenient short-term leasing option. As well as the same insurance cover, the option also includes scheduled maintenance and an allowance of 800 miles per month, with the option to buy extra mileage if required.

For riders looking to spend more time on two wheels, Spyder Club Membership offers the ideal solution. For a monthly fee, riders can buy days and miles and have access to the club fleet with the option of either having the bikes delivered or picking them up from the company’s Silverstone headquarters.

Devron Boulton, National Sales Manager, said: “Not everyone is in a position to own a Triumph and enjoy their superb engineering and rideabilty, which is why we are delighted to have our motorcycles on the Spyder fleet. It gives riders the opportunity to enjoy our product and the benefits that short-term hire and leasing brings.”

Spyder Motorcycles is also an official Isle of Man (IOM) TT travel partner and will be supplying riders with Triumph motorcycles to rent for the legendary IOM TT in 2020.
