Ducati riders thrill World Ducati Week 2018 with the “Race of Champions”

The Misano paddock was completely filled with motorcycles and people from all over the world, all sharing a great passion for Ducati. A sea of motorcycles that peacefully invaded the Adriatic Riviera and occupied over 75,000 square metres of the circuit’s paddock. In short, this is what is happening at WDW2018, the great Ducati gathering that from 20 to 22 July brings together tens of thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts from all over the world.

The second day of the spectacular Ducati event was preceded by a “hot” opening Friday: at the end of the day, thousands hit the road to participate in the parade that first took a lap of the circuit and then formed a long and colourful convoy of motorcycles that made its way to Rimini, which welcomed the Ducatisti with music, food and entertainmentat the “rustida” and Scrambler Beach Party energised by DJ sets from Virgin Radio.

In the morning Claudio Domenicali, Ducati’s CEO, opened the second day of WDW2018 by meeting with numerous international journalists attending the event.
World Ducati Week is a big party“, declared Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO, “a celebration for all Ducatisti that every two years brings us all together to share the passion for this unique brand. Ducati has a great past, last WDW edition we celebrated our 90th anniversary, but also an extraordinary present with a fantastic range of products. Thanks to the most beautiful motorcycles in our history, we can continue to grow, sharing emotions and achievements with our fans. Emotions like the flyover of the Frecce Tricolore just before the start of the Race of Champions, or entering the circuit this morning. Something special, unique, powerful, which is the confirmation that I am part of a Community of women and men who work and share – along with tens of thousands of Ducatisti who have travelled to the Adriatic Riviera – the pride of belonging to this historical and prestigious brand. There are so many of us, yesterday 30% more than in 2016, and we expect this 10th edition to set a new record, – concluded the company’s top manager – “Seeing the paddock of the Misano World Circuit with so many people gives me goosebumps!“.

For the WDW2018 participants’ there are countless activities and initiatives scheduled: areas dedicated to the various motorcycle families, dynamic test rides, rides on the track, exhibitions, contests, stunt riding, music and lots of fun. The highlight of the saturday was at 1 pm when – after a spectacular flyover by the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team – the “Race of Champions” started. The race saw 12 Ducati MotoGP and SBK Champions competing on the Misano circuit riding Panigale V4 S specially prepared with racing configurations and dedicated liveries. A true race, with the support of Locman as “Official Timekeeper”, with riders giving their all to win the podium, putting on a show without equal that only Ducati can offer. After the free practice sessions and qualifying rounds to establish the starting grid, the race saw Michele Pirro, who started at pole position, immediately taking the lead, setting a pace that allowed him to extend his advantage over the group of pursuers., A spectacular comeback by Rabat who had a bad start but ended up taking second place after a series of duels and beautiful overtakings with Melandri, Miller and Fores, who fired up the spectators at the Misano World Circuit and fans tuned in live on SKY with emotions worthy of a world competition. Miller, Melandri and Rinaldi followed in order, then Dovizioso, Siméon, Petrucci, Lorenzo, Abraham and Bayliss to complete the exceptional line-up of the “Race of Champions”. The rain – which fortunately stopped falling after a few minutes – forced the chequered flag at the sixth lap, two laps ahead of time, but didn’t detract from the great show and the victory of the Ducati MotoGP Team test rider.

At the end of the race the riders greeted the public, with spectacular burn-outs, seing on canvas all the Pirelli tyres of the Panigale V4 S dedicated to each rider. Another gift for fans all over the world: starting from the end of the race, the 12 Panigale V4 S from the “Race of Champions”, plus the thirteenth of Chaz Davies who has not competed due to injury, can be purchased through a public auction on eBay. A dream that becomes reality for the fans, who have the chance to win them until the close of bidding scheduled for Saturday, 28 July at 6 pm (CEST).

Claudio Domenicali handed out awards to the three winners on the podium, giving them a sculpture replicating the crankshaft of the Panigale V4. and then invited the audience to Piazzale Roma in Riccione, where riders and management on stage, presented by radio and TV personality Linus and music and entertainment from Radio Deejay, offer their greetings to all the Ducatisti, followed by a live concert by the singer-songwriter Nina Zilli.

WDW2018: the great Ducati festival has begun in Misano

WDW2018 hits the ground running with all the elements necessary to celebrate its 10th anniversary with flair, exceeding all records and expectations. The big festival that every two years attracts Ducatisti  and motorcyclists from all over the world is in full swing at the Marco Simoncelli Misano World Circuit, running from Friday, 20 July to Sunday, 22 July.

It all started Thursday evening at the harbour in Cattolica, as the Adriatic Riviera began to experience the peaceful invasion of the Ducatisti, which also calls for an off-circuit event in the evening. Friday night a parade of thousands of motorcycles will depart from the circuit and travel to the pier of Rimini for a “rustida” and the Scrambler Beach Party energised by a DJ set from Ringo and Virgin Radio.

They arrived on their motorcycles and every other means of transport to reach the Misano circuit on time to be present from the very first day of this incredible event. Visitors started queueing outside the circuit in the early hours of the morning, waiting for the gates to open at 8 am. The first to enter were three Ducatisti who rode from Greece on their Multistrada motorbikes, rewarded for their enthusiasm and for officially opening WDW2018.

The public of WDW2018 is a mix of people coming from all over the world. According to pre-sales data, 60% of the participants are Italian, but the remaining 40% confirm the power and appeal of the Ducati brand all over the world. The Ducatisti come from the USA, Europe, Japan, Australia, Russia, India, but also from Brazil, New Zealand, China and the Philippines.

Also at WDW2018 are Ken Lu and Lv Fei, the two riders from China, who rode their Multistrada 1200 Enduros from Xinjiang to Bologna in only seven days. Ken and Fei accomplished an extraordinary feat, covering over 7,575 km across 10 countries in order to reach the gathering like the true Ducatisti they are.

A fundamental component of the Ducatista universe are the 147 Desmo Owners Clubs (out of a total 270 official associations present throughout the world) that have come to WDW2018. A record number of participants, coming from 33 countries for a total of 4,375 DOC members. 280 of them – representing all the DOCs present – were received in the beautiful and unique setting of San Marino, where the World President Meeting was held, attended also by Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding but also a true, passionate Ducatista. At the end of the evening, a beautiful dinner was organised in Piazza della Libertà, which offers one of the most beautiful views of the historic, charming village, together with government authorities of San Marino.

WDW2018 is also bursting with competitions and challenges on the track among Ducati riders. The first of the two racing events included in the programme for this 10th edition, the Scrambler Flat Track Race, which took place on Friday afternoon at the Misano circuit Arena. A hard-fought race full of twists, spectacular slides, duels and pursuits that saw the victory of Andrea Dovizioso, who has repeated the performance of WDW 2016, confirming that he is unbeatable in that race. Eight champions who entertained the crowd riding their Scrambler Flat Track Pros, starting with the knockout rounds which saw Dovizioso reaching the final race, where he competed against Xavier Simeon and Danilo Petrucci.

A long queue of visitors lined up at the entrance of the “closed room” throughout the day, where Ducati offered an exclusive preview to WDW2018 participants of one of the new Ducati 2019 motorcycles (no pictures or videos allowed!). The general public will have to wait for EICMA2018 in Milan on 6-11 November to see the new bike and get information and details on one of next year’s most anxiously awaited new developments.

In the “Land of Joy” of the Scrambler Village the view of WDW2018 from above offers an exciting show. Thanks to the hot air balloon anchored to the ground with safety ropes, visitors can float about 100 metres above the colourful and crowded paddock, getting an absolutely unique and original perspective. Just as breathtaking is the experience in the Scrambler Silodrome, the cylindrical wooden structure inside which daring stuntmen riding two Scramblers defy the most basic laws of gravity performing motorcycle acrobatics along the vertical wall of the Colosseum.

At the SuperSport stand visitors can see a special livery take shape, colour after colour, detail after detail until its completion, actively participating in its creation by helping professionals with the decals, stripes, cutters and spatulas under the direct guidance of Ducati Design Centre technicians. Also in this area, personalised decals with nickname, race number and official WDW2018 logo are produced on the spot, to be applied to your bike to make it even more unique and special.
