Yamaha Motor Europe announces 2024 YRE and commitment to the future of the R1

Yamaha Motor Europe announces 2024 YRE and commitment to the future of the R1

Over the last decade, the global motorcycle market has seen significant changes as the needs of riders have evolved in line with external circumstances.

On top of these changes, emissions regulations have become more stringent.

The evolution of the Supersport category is undoubtedly among the most noticeable of these changes.

Staying true to its brand origin and DNA, Yamaha Motor Europe remains committed to the road going Supersport segment in the future and is confident the product line-up in this sector – based on platform models like R125, R3 or R7 – will continue to excite and exhilarate customers both on the road and the track.

In line with the change in demand and customer needs, Yamaha Motor Europe has taken the decision that the future of its track-targeting Supersport models will be dedicated solely to track use from 2025 – with the R1 following the same route taken with R6 in 2020.

This is not to say it is the end for the iconic R1; far from it. Global production of the R1 will continue in 2025 and beyond, as will the development program that has seen the bike secure world titles in both the FIM Superbike and Endurance World Championships in recent years.

The R1 remains a popular choice for riders and teams looking to secure a competitive and cost-effective package for both casual track day use and racing, from the grassroots club level to national and international race series.

It is for this reason that Yamaha has consistently invested in making available to customers a range of GYTR® Performance parts for the R1, leveraging the experience of the same engineers responsible for the development of the R1 WorldSBK campaigned this year by six-time World Superbike champion Jonathan Rea.

Yamaha Motor Europe and its distributors have also set-up a dedicated network of GYTR PRO SHOPS to support riders looking to get the most out of any of its R-Series Supersport models on track.

Each GYTR PRO SHOP is run by a Yamaha dealer with a wealth and passion for motorcycle racing, who are actively involved in racing themselves and in direct contact with the Yamaha Road Racing Technical Service. Examples include Crescent Motorcycles, who operate Yamaha’s official WorldSBK team, the GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team, who recently opened their GYTR PRO SHOP at the Misano World Circuit, the Yamaha Austria Racing Team, the reigning EWC Champions, and Ten Kate Racing, the most successful WorldSSP Team ever.

While the R1 as standard is ready for the track, many track-focused customers transform their R1 from a road-going machine to a purely track-focused weapon. With the R1 moving to a track-focused model from 2025 and beyond, this step will be simplified allowing more opportunity for customers to access the performance-enhancing GYTR parts.

Throughout 2024 the road going homologated R1 and R1M will still be available through all Yamaha dealers and to emphasise their current commitment to the segment, Yamaha Motor Europe has confirmed the popular and prestigious Yamaha Racing Experience event.

Taking place at Circuito de Jerez Angel Nieto on 3rd and 4th July 2024, the R1 GYTR PRO 25th Anniversary owners and 2024 R1M owners are invited (free of charge) to join this immersive racing experience, which offers a broad program of riding, plus the presence of the legendary Yamaha Brand Ambassador and R1 GYTR owner Valentino Rossi, the Pata Prometeon Yamaha WorldSBK team and other Yamaha Official riders.

Racing is in Yamaha’s DNA; and no matter what challenges may be faced in the future, Yamaha is committed to retaining this vital part of its identity, moving forwards through the continued development of the entire Supersport range both on track and on road, its GYTR strategy and the unique bLU cRU program dedicated to its racers.

Yamaha’s 2024 MT-09 SP: A Deeper Level of Darkness

Ten years ago, Yamaha changed the game with the introduction of a radical new machine which kick-started the Hyper Naked revolution and changed everything in the world of motorcycling.

The three-cylinder MT-09 was a bike like no other. Deviating from the norms of Japanese motorcycle design, this new model sought its inspiration from the edgy and dynamic motorcycle urban sub-culture found on the streets of Japan’s largest cities – the Dark Side of Japan.

The result was a bold and exciting machine that stimulated the senses with every twist of the throttle, introducing another dimension to riding and the start of a new era for Yamaha.

Over 385,000 MT models have been sold across Europe since, each and every one of them inspiring motorcycle riders from young to old with their exhilarating torque-rich performance and aggressive, edgy styling.

The New MT-09: Sharper, Purer, More Refined
The MT-09 marks its 10th anniversary with a comprehensive new bodywork intended to amplify the feeling of the CP3’s iconic torquey acceleration.

The styling concept behind the MT-09 has always been that of ‘functional beauty’, eliminating unnecessary features and embodying a ‘less is more’ approach. Each detail has been re-considered to reinforce the MT-09’s pure aggression and maximise an engaged riding experience.

And for those seeking a refined, ultimate Dark Side of Japan experience, the new MT-09 SP takes the already exceptional MT-09 platform even further with a higher specification including upgraded suspension and brakes, an exclusive look and finish plus track-focused technology and electronics.

Superior Darkness: 2024 MT-09 SP
Additional Track Focused YRC Settings
For 2024, the MT-09 features new Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) modes which allow riders to maximise the performance of the 890cc CP3 engine by selecting engine power characteristics and altering the degree of assistance from the various electronic aids (Traction Control System, Slide Control System etc.).

Riders can choose from SPORT, STREET and RAIN modes with the option to fine tune two further CUSTOM settings.

The MT-09 SP exclusively features the addition of TRACK modes to the YRC settings, enabling the rider to customise four extra patterns to suit certain track scenarios, for example a specific circuit or track conditions.

The individual TRACK modes allow for more refined, specialised settings, including the option of choosing between two Engine Brake Management (EBM) settings and the ability to alter the level of Brake Control (BC). Additionally, riders also have the option of turning the rear ABS off to further enhance on track performance.

Each mode can be altered and set directly in the dashboard menu or using the free MyRide app on a smartphone before being sent to the MT-09 SP, where riders can switch between each mode effortlessly using the newly designed switchgear.

The on-track riding experience is further enhanced by a dedicated SP-exclusive TRACK theme for the MT-09 SP’s new 5″ full colour TFT display, offering information such as a lap timer and other track-focused details.

Brembo Stylema Calipers
The superior specification of the MT-09 SP is designed to further amplify the exhilarating performance both on the road and on the track.

The introduction of new Brembo monoblock ‘Stylema’ calipers refines braking performance with the very latest technology from the famous Italian firm.

The ‘Stylema’ calipers feature a slimmer piston and brake pad area compared to conventional calipers, as well as being lighter, more rigid and offering enhanced control in braking input. In addition, larger-diameter pistons are adopted for increased braking forces, allowing MT-09 SP riders to experience the next level in braking performance.

Upgraded Fully Adjustable Suspension
SP-exclusive premium suspension, front and rear, brings Supersport-level handling and precision to the Hyper Naked class.

The gold-finish DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated, 41mm KYB forks and Öhlins monoshock feature a higher spring rate, offering outstanding stability during more spirited, sporty riding. In addition, the damping characteristics have been refined to enhance the comfort of the ride.

The higher specification KYB forks offer full adjustability for preload, re-bound and compression dampening allowing SP riders the option to fine-tune their set-up to suit a variety of different riding situations.

The Öhlins monoshock completes the MT-09 SP’s high-end suspension package, offering full adjustability for compression and re-bound damping as well as being equipped with a remote preload adjuster to enable quick and easy changes.

Smart Key System
Yamaha’s SP models are renowned for taking the next leap in technological advancement and the MT-09 SP becomes the first Hyper Naked to feature Yamaha’s Smart Key System.

The engine is started by pressing and turning the newly designed main switch, provided that the smart key is within a specified range such as in the rider’s pocket. The all-new switch also features a lock and unlock option for the fuel tank cap, further simplifying the riding experience through the ability to turn the bike on, off and re-fuel at the twist of a switch.

Exclusive R1M-inspired Icon Performance Colours
In line with keeping one eye on the track, the MT-09 SP features the exclusive silver, black and Yamaha Racing blue Icon Performance livery on the fuel tank and air-intakes to offer an even more aggressive and exclusive look. The Supersport-inspired colourway reinforces the MT-09 SP’s sporty character and highlights the close technological links to the R1M – the most advanced high-performance production Yamaha ever built.

The high quality, premium finish is exemplified by the classy, brushed aluminium swingarm, exclusive to the MT-09 SP.

Celebrating 30 years of Yamaha eBikes

Back in 1993, many years of research and development by Yamaha finally came to fruition when the company revealed a new kind of bike featuring its innovative Power Assist System (PAS). Consisting of an electric motor powered by a battery and equipped with a computerised controller linked to torque and speed sensors, the Yamaha PAS was the world’s very first production eBike. Aimed at commuters and shoppers in the Japanese market, the original Yamaha PA26 was the beginning of a new era in zero-emission powered transport that would ignite the whole eBike movement.

Yamaha: The eBike pioneer

Since 1993 Yamaha has pioneered the development of every aspect of the eBike, including drive units, electronic control technologies, batteries, interfaces and chassis designs. At the same time as producing complete eBikes for the Japanese market, Yamaha has also been supplying eBike System kits to major European bike manufacturers since 2013.

In 2018 Yamaha launched its range of eBikes into the global market starting in the USA and entered selected European markets in 2022 with three new models: the MORO 07 eMTB, Wabash RT gravel eBike and CrossCore RC do-it-all urban eBike. Thirty years since producing the world’s original eBike, Yamaha is established as one of the most innovative brands in this rapidly expanding market that is transforming daily life for commuters and adding an exciting new dimension for leisure and sport riders.

Exclusive new Factory Silver MORO 07 30th anniversary model

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the world’s first production eBike, Yamaha announces the launch of the special limited-edition MORO 07 in exclusive Factory Silver colour.

Its innovative Dual Twin frame features a high-quality Factory Silver finish that echoes the style of Yamaha’s YZ motocross models that have been winning World Championships for half a century. Just like motocross racers, MTB riders are constantly pushing the limits on challenging terrain, and this special MORO 07 is aimed at customers who appreciate Yamaha’s advanced chassis and drive unit technology.

Blue accents on the new Factory Silver MORO 07 underline the technology crossover between the YZ motocross bikes and this premium eMTB, and dedicated graphics highlight the 30th anniversary of Yamaha’s pioneering Power Assist System that launched an exciting new era for every bike rider.

Yamaha MORO 07: Ride without limits

Developed with 30 years of experience in the design and manufacture of innovative eBikes, MORO 07 is Yamaha’s premium eMTB. Inspired by Yamaha’s Grand Prix-winning motocross machines, its unique Dual Twin frame cages the battery and shock – and the high-specification RockShox suspension provides confident and responsive handling on all types of terrain. Offering the best torque-to-weight ratio, the compact PW-X3 drive unit and lightweight aluminium chassis ensure smooth and powerful performance on the most challenging mountain single track.

PW-X3 drive unit for instant power

Developing 85 Nm and weighing just 2.75 kg, the new generation PW-X3 drive unit gives an outstanding torque-to-weight ratio and provides high power at a high cadence for strong performance on steep hills and in sandy or muddy terrain.

Yamaha’s Zero Cadence technology delivers instant power delivery at the slightest pedal input – and specially developed gears and freewheels give a lightweight and natural feeling when pedalling over 25 km/h.

Unique Dual Twin frame

The unique Dual Twin frame features dual top tubes and down tubes that are designed to give a finely tuned rigidity balance that delivers confident handling together with plenty of accurate surface feedback.

This innovative chassis has been holistically developed alongside the powerful and compact PW-X3 drive unit, enabling Yamaha’s engineers to achieve idealised chassis dimensions with excellent ground clearance and a compact wheelbase.

Premium equipment

The Yamaha PW-X3 drive unit’s small physical size has also enabled the design of an innovative new 150 mm travel rear suspension system with RockShox Super Deluxe Select + mounted between the twin top tubes. RockShox LYRIK SELECT Charger forks offer 160mm travel for sure-footed front suspension action, and Maxxis 27.5 x 2.6-inch tyres give the traction and flex needed for effective riding together with a high degree of surface feel. Magura MT5 brakes deliver power with feel, and the premium Shimano XT 1 x 12 gearset ensures smooth shifting and effective drive.

Interface X with Smartphone connectivity

The Yamaha Interface X enables smartphone connectivity and gives a tidy handlebar area. Its minimalist design with ergonomic mode assist buttons and colour-coded assist mode indicator enable the MORO 07 rider to concentrate fully on the terrain ahead.

New colour Factory Silver

Moro 07 is offered in three sizes and is available in the new limited edition Factory Silver colour.

Unleash your Darkness with the Next Generation MT-09

The Dark Knight: Unleash your Darkness with the Next Generation MT-09. Sharper new look, refined riding position, intelligent technology

The Purest Hyper Naked
As the original Hyper Naked born out of the Dark Side of Japan, the MT-09 has always been the purest of all MT models, with its dark and mysterious aesthetic and grin-inducing performance leaving a lasting impression on every rider.

The game-changing MT-09 broke cover in 2013, just one year after the triple-cylinder CP3 engine concept was first shown suspended in an intricate wire frame at the Cologne Motorcycle Show.

The first MT-09 brought pure emotion and excitement back to the world of motorcycling, kick-starting the Hyper Naked revolution that would change everything.

For 2024, Yamaha has taken the MT-09 to the next level of Darkness, combining intelligence and style, further pursuing the sharpened purity of the Dark Side of Japan.

The new MT-09 offers an even more thrilling riding experience with pure adrenaline, aggressive and edgy styling and a premium specification featuring the latest in technological advancements.

A Decade of the Dark Side of Japan
The introduction of the MT-09 marked a step away from conventional Japanese motorcycle design and introduced a bold, abstract new direction for Yamaha inspired by the unique urban motorcycle sub-culture found on the streets of Japan’s largest cities.

Signifying an exciting new era for Yamaha, the MT-09 featured aggressive styling, a chassis designed for the most agile handling and a torque-laden CP3 engine, with aesthetics and performance designed to stimulate the senses.

Stripped of unnecessary bodywork, packed neatly into a compact aluminium frame and equipped with Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), the MT was the perfect blend of high performance, cutting-edge technology and purposeful functionality.

The new dawn was here and the Dark Side of Japan was unleashed upon the world.

The Beginning of a Hyper Naked Revolution
Over the years, the MT-09 has evolved into one of the most significant and successful models in the Yamaha range, earning its status as one of the most iconic motorcycles in Yamaha’s history.

The MT-09’s introduction was soon reinforced by the arrival of the MT-07, another highly successful motorcycle that established itself as the runaway market leader for many consecutive years.

The Hyper Naked segment is now one of the most important and successful in Yamaha’s range, featuring a total of eight models progressing through the experience levels from the learner-friendly 125cc MT-125 to the 1000cc MT-10 SP, the halo model of the line-up.

New MT-09: Sharper, Purer, More Refined
A Slimmer, Sharper New Look
The MT-09 marks its 10th anniversary with a comprehensive new design intended to amplify the feeling of the CP3’s iconic torquey acceleration.

Based on the concept of ‘3D Riding’, allowing the rider to move more freely on the machine, the 2024 MT-09 bodywork is inspired by Yamaha’s YZ motocross bikes, which also require a high degree of freedom in riding position.

The styling concept behind the MT-09 has always been that of ‘functional beauty’, eliminating unnecessary features and embodying a ‘less is more’ approach. Each and every detail has been reconsidered to reinforce the MT-09’s pure aggressive look and maximise an engaged riding experience.

More Compact LED Headlamp
A new LED headlamp, enclosed in a redesigned cover, creates a more unified relationship between the headlamp and the fuel tank and is inspired by the MT’s origins – a blend of ‘Naked’ and ‘Motard’.

The bi-functional LED projector headlight has been enhanced, featuring a compact diameter lense module that is both smaller and thinner than the previous model, but which still provides a broad and powerful beam with soft edges for both low and high beam settings.

Transparent twin LED position lights express a cool look with a sense of concentration to complete the MT-09’s more compact, sharp and aggressive style.

This theme is continued at the rear with a newly designed LED tail light. The tail light and brake lights are separated to align with the new outer lens shape. And to give the whole rear a slimmer look, the upper tail light lens is red, while the bottom has a smoked finish.

Sharpened Fuel Tank Design
A new fuel tank has been designed to promote a more engaged and free riding position while maintaining the sharp and edgy aesthetic that has become synonymous with the MT name.

Produced using a new press moulding manufacturing method, the new tank offers sharper character with clearly defined edges and tense styling unique to the MT models.

A More Engaged Riding Experience
Amplified CP3 Acoustics
The grin-inducing roar of the MT-09 is one of its most defining characteristics, evoking a sense of pure adrenaline with every twist of the throttle.

Following the Jin-Ki Kanno philosophy to stimulate the rider’s senses and make them feel at one with the bike, sound was an important consideration in the development of the latest EU5+ CP3 engine.

The new MT-09’s sound is further amplified by a revised airbox featuring two newly designed air-intake ducts, which accentuate the high frequency sounds while maintaining a linear throttle response.

This sound is then emphasised, especially at higher speed and revs, by the introduction of a new acoustic amplifier grille on top of the bike, delivering the CP3’s vibrant note directly to the rider.

Redefined Riding Position
The MT-09 is renowned for its stability and agility and this has been enhanced by refined ergonomics with modifications to the handlebar/footrest/seat relationship to improve rider comfort and offer greater freedom in movement for different riding styles, while maintaining a sporty forward-lean riding position.

In order to achieve this, the overall handlebar position is now lower and the rider can now choose between two adjustable handlebar positions depending on their personal preference and physique. The steering angle is also increased as a result of the lower profile fuel tank.

The newly designed footrests are 30.6 mm back compared to the previous model and have been raised by 9.5 mm, while the footrest height can be adjusted to two different positions based on rider preference. To improve passenger comfort, the tandem footpegs have also been redesigned and are now mounted underneath the rear frame.

Details Matter: New Brake and Gear Shift Pedals
Each and every detail of the MT-09 has been reconsidered in order to further improve the riding experience. The rear brake pedal has been redesigned and is now made from forged aluminium, while the tip of the gear shift pedal has been significantly flattened to reduce the amount of ankle movement required during shifting, enabling smoother operation.

Separated Rider and Passenger Seats
To further enhance the feeling of freedom, the MT-09 now features a separated front and rear seat, improving both rider position and convenience when mounting and dismounting the machine.

The step between the two seats also functions as a means of keeping the rider forward and over the front of the machine as the MT-09’s torque is unleashed, while the overall seat design improves rider agility.

A Type-C USB socket is installed under the rider’s seat to accommodate the charging of electronic equipment and electric heating wear.

Brembo Radial Master Cylinder: Linear Power, Total Control
In order to match the MT-09’s high torque and acceleration, stopping power is enhanced by a new Brembo radial master cylinder, which moves in the same direction as the brake lever, resulting in a linear relationship between rider input and hydraulic brake pressure to the dual front brake discs for excellent controllability.

In addition, a newly designed adjustable clutch lever offers the rider further control when engaging the clutch.

Fully Adjustable Front Suspension and Bridgestone S23 Tyres
The MT-09’s 41 mm KYB® front forks are fully adjustable for preload, compression and re-bound damping and now feature revised factory settings to achieve excellent stability.

The rear suspension linkage design has been modified and the adjustable KYB® rear shock set to allow for a more dynamic feeling in cornering, while new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 M tyres offer high grip and light handling.

More Intelligent Technology
5” TFT Full Colour Screen
The 2024 MT-09 is equipped with a range of next-level technology to enhance the overall package and riding experience while remaining true to the Dark Side of Japan concept many have come to love.

An all-new, horizontally mounted 5” TFT full colour screen offers the rider an attractive new interface with the choice of four different themes to suit a range of different riding experiences.

Smartphone Connectivity and Navigation
For an enriched riding experience, connectivity comes as standard on the MT-09 via a built-in Communication Control Unit (CCU), meaning riders can stay connected while riding by linking their smartphone with their machine via the free MyRide app. As well as seeing call and message notifications on the 5” TFT display, a new dimension is added to the ride by the possibility of taking calls and listening to music via a Bluetooth headset*. Once connected, riders can also make use of the free Garmin StreetCross navigation system, which will display on the 5” TFT dashboard.

Riders can also personalise the TFT display even further by sending images from their smartphone via the MyRide app using the Information Transfer feature.

There is also the option to provide power to external devices with the new under-seat USB Type-C socket.

*Bluetooth headset not included with MT-09

Intuitive New Switchgear
New integrated handlebar switch assemblies enable the rider to operate the wider range of functions of the new MT-09, including smartphone connectivity, navigation and riding modes, as well as navigating the further menu options.

Featuring a clear, logical and simple design – the shape, movement and ergonomic layout of the buttons have been designed with intuitive movement in mind, meaning riders can cycle through the various different functions with ease.

Customisable Riding Modes with Yamaha Ride Control Settings
New for 2024, MT-09 riders can now further customise their riding experience via the Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) settings, which allow the rider to select engine power characteristics and the level of electronic intervention to suit their preferences and road conditions.

Three integrated riding modes, ‘Sport’, ‘Street’ and ‘Rain’ featuring factory settings with different intervention levels to suit various conditions are complemented by the option to pre-set two Custom modes. This allows the creation of specific YRC settings to suit certain situations (weather, location, etc.) by altering the level of electronic support such as Power (PWR), Traction Control System (TCS) and LIF (Lift Control) – all of which can be set directly through the MT-09’s dashboard or using a smartphone via the MyRide app.

These personalised settings can be sent to the machine from the rider’s smartphone and cycled between with ease while riding using the all-new switchgear.

Extra Support from Advanced six-axis IMU for Ultimate Performance
In 2021, the third-generation MT-09 became the first Hyper Naked to be equipped with the high-tech six-axis IMU directly developed from the R1.

Constantly measuring acceleration in the forwards-backwards, up-down and left-right directions – as well as the angular velocity in the machine’s pitch, roll and yaw directions – the six-axis IMU is able to send data in real time to the ECU, which controls the suite of electronic rider aids, including the lean sensitive Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), as well as a front wheel Lift Control System (LIF) and Brake Control System (BC).

This suite is further enhanced for the 2024 MT-09 with the addition of a Back Slip Regulator (BSR), which offers stabilisation when the rear wheel locks under excessive engine braking by controlling the level of torque produced. This is especially useful in situations when it is difficult to activate the slipper clutch, such as when grip is low.

Cruise Control for Effortless Riding
In addition to the comprehensive electronic rider aids, the new MT-09 is also equipped with a cruise control system to enhance the overall riding experience by offering a more relaxed option for motorway riding.

Operational in third gear and above, once the cruise control system has been activated, it can be adjusted in 1 km/h increments with a single push of the button or steadily increased by holding the button down. The system is cancelled whenever the brakes, clutch or throttle is engaged.

Soft-click and Auto-cancelling Turn Signals
For a more intuitive and convenient riding experience, a soft-click of the indicator switch will flash the turn signals three times for use when lane-changing or when only brief indication is required. A full-click of the switch will result in continuous flashing until 15 seconds have passed and until the machine has travelled more than 150 metres.

A new Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function reacts to sudden braking by engaging the hazard lights to warn road users behind the vehicle is stopping at speed in an emergency situation.

Third-Generation Quickshifter
The new MT-09 is equipped with the third-generation quickshifter, enhancing the ride by enabling clutchless downshifts while accelerating and clutchless upshifts under deceleration.

To maintain a more natural feeling, the third-generation quickshifter will not operate in certain situations when engine rpm is extremely low or high, and when the machine is neither accelerating nor decelerating. In these circumstances, the quickshifter icon on the new TFT display will indicate whether the quickshifter can be used.

Born Iconic: The New XSR900 GP

The Sport Heritage range pays tribute to some of the most iconic motorcycles from Yamaha’s rich history by blending nostalgic design with the very latest in high performance engine and chassis technology.

Each XSR model takes inspiration and design cues from some of the most significant bikes built by Yamaha in its 68-year history but sees no compromise in modern day performance by bonding this timeless beauty with cutting edge riding technology.

Racing is in Yamaha’s DNA. Yamaha Motor Company has been competing in, and winning, motorcycle races since its inception – pushing the limits of both man and machine. Yamaha’s first ever motorcycle, the YA-1, won the Mount Fuji Ascent Race in 1955 shortly after the company was founded.

Since then, Yamaha has amassed countless victories at all levels from local grassroots amateur racing to the premier class of Grand Prix.

First released in 2016, the XSR900 has long featured subtle hints to Yamaha’s racing pedigree and in 2021, the latest generation XSR900 went one step further with clear design cues taken from race machines of the 1980s and 1990s while maintaining its position as a heritage roadster.

For 2024, the nod to Yamaha’s racing tradition takes another leap with the introduction of the new XSR900 GP, which pays homage to some of the most celebrated race machines from Yamaha’s illustrious past in a way never seen before in the Sports Heritage range.

Combining a sense of 1980s Grand Prix nostalgia with the very latest technology including the iconic, torque-rich 890cc CP3 engine, R1-derived six-axis IMU and lean sensitive rider aids, the XSR900 GP embodies Yamaha’s Racing history without sacrificing modern day performance.

The ‘Golden Era’ of Grand Prix racing
Yamaha first entered a road racing world championship event at the Grand Prix of France.

The first premier class title came for Yamaha in the 1970s, with Giacomo Agostini, and further championship crowns followed later in the decade.

But it was in the 1980s that Yamaha secured its legacy in what would become known as the ‘Golden Era’ for Grand Prix racing. ‘King’ Kenny Roberts rode his YZR500 to a third consecutive title in 1980 but, following that success, Yamaha endured a tough few seasons battling for supremacy with its rivals.

This led to a re-think in approach, with a change in focus to developing race bikes with a priority on a rider’s feeling with the machine.

Not only would this new strategy lay the groundwork for further Grand Prix success (Yamaha won six 500cc Grand Prix titles between 1984 and 1992), but technology developed during this period went on to shape the future of the production sport motorcycle to this day.

Having moved to a slimmer V4 engine in 1982, Yamaha’s engineers turned to developing a frame in which to house this powerplant. The idea was to produce a frame the same width of the V4 motor that would envelop it, like a cage.

This marked the birth of what would become the iconic Deltabox frame, which first featured in the 1982 YZR500 OW61 Grand Prix machine. Offering outstanding rigidity and feedback, just where a rider needed it most, the Deltabox posed such a significant step forward that just three years later Yamaha introduced it to a production model for the first time, with the TZR250 bringing the characteristics of the YZR factory race machine to the road.

And now, 40 years on, the Deltabox style frame remains at the heart of many Yamaha motorcycles, including the new XSR900 GP.

Born out of respect
The English proverb ‘Manners Maketh Man’ derives from a shared understanding that courtesy, good manners and respect are essential to the preservation of good human interaction and relationships.

It is this concept which formed the starting point for the design of XSR900 GP, in harmony with the Faster Sons philosophy of respecting the origin, learning from the past and creating a better machine for the modern-day rider.

The aim was not to create a replica, but instead release a model that pays the utmost respect to the past, while holding its own with the latest in performance and technology. That is the XSR900 GP.

A sense of nostalgia in every detail
1980s inspired cowling
Aesthetically, Grand Prix bikes took a significant step in the 1980s, moving from the curvaceous bodywork of the 1970s towards the ‘boxier’ design seen from the mid-80s onwards. These squarer fairings would set the trend for the next decade not only at Grand Prix level but in production bikes too.

The XSR900 GP features an upper cowling reminiscent of this era, not only with a clear influence from the 1980s YZR Grand Prix bikes but also with notes of the FZR and TZR production sports machines of the late 1980s and early 1990s. To maintain the race-bike look, the XSR900’s round LED headlamp is replaced by a compact lens module, neatly hidden in the front cowling, creating a sense of unity with the front fairing while maintaining excellent illumination.

The bodywork is not only a symbol of the past in looks alone, but the method in which it is fixed in position is also inspired by the 1980s, with a tubed structure connecting the cowling to the frame and straight brackets supporting the dash creating a rider’s view with a genuine golden era feel.

To emphasise the classic cockpit feeling, the upper fairing stay is supported by a nut structure identical to that used for the original TZ250. In true racing style, this structure is fastened with a beta pin, marking the first time Yamaha has used such a fastening on a mass-produced production model for public road use.

The function behind the move from the curvaceous cowlings of the 1970s to the more squared off style of the 1980s was to both improve aerodynamic efficiency and protect the rider from the wind coming from higher performance; and this is no different with the XSR900 GP.

While the windscreen and individual knuckle guards incorporate a taste of the 1980s; it’s not solely about looks. The power output and gear ratio of the 890cc CP3 engine are identical to that of the XSR900, but the front cowling structure of the XSR900 GP increases both acceleration and top speed while the ducts on the side panels efficiently discharge heart from the radiator to maximise cooling performance.

The colour-matched seat cover fits over the passenger seat to complete the racer look with a boxy 1980s style rear end hiding the rear light, while a seat stopper on top of the seat cowling keeps the rider in position to enhance the feeling of acceleration.

Colours reminiscent of the Rainey years
Adorned in one of the most iconic Yamaha Grand Prix colours of all time, the XSR900 GP is available in a heritage livery inspired by the machines ridden by riders such as Wayne Rainey to multiple 500cc Grand Prix World Championships in the 1980s and early 1990s, complete with authentic yellow number boards on both front and rear cowlings.

The Deltabox-style chassis and swing arm are finished in silver to better evoke the era of the 1980s prototypes and emphasise the character of the Deltabox style frame itself.

A sportier ride
Race-style clip on handlebars
Separate ‘clip on’ handlebars add to the racer-style cockpit and offer a sportier riding experience.

The revised handlebars drastically change the riding position from the XSR900, moving the rider further forward on the machine into a sportier riding position, increasing the load on the front to offer the more precise feeling expected from a race-style machine.

However, since the model is not purely focused on racing or circuit riding, care has been taken to ensure the riding position does not lean forward excessively, instead offering a balance which can be enjoyed on the road without discomfort. The comfort is emphasised via a thicker, more supportive seat.

The aluminium diecast footrests are adjustable to two different positions but come out of the factory set at the upper position to emphasise the sportier riding position.

Tuned rigidity
To accommodate the extra load on the front end of the machine, as a result of the more forward riding position, the XSR900 GP areas surrounding the frame have been tuned to optimise stability in turning. The subframe has also been reinforced over the one found on the XSR900.

To further correspond with this front end-led riding style, the XSR900 is the only CP3 model to feature an aluminium steering stem shaft, adjusting rigidity in the steering area to better balance the often conflicting feelings of lightness and stability when changing direction or under rapid deceleration.

In conjunction with the lightweight Spinforged wheels and new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 tyres the rider can have precise confidence in placing the XSR900 GP exactly where they wish.

Cutting edge technology
High performance brakes and suspension
In line with the mantra of blending yesterday’s style with modern technology, the XSR900 GP boasts the latest in suspension and braking components.

The KYB upside down front forks are fully adjustable for Preload and compression damping as well as rebound damping, so the ideal setup can be found for front end feel. The link-type rear suspension actuates a forward-inclined fully adjustable KYB, shock virtually hidden from sight to maintain the slim and sporty performance at the rear. Remote pre-load adjustment makes customising the ride a simple task.

A Brembo radial front master cylinder underlines the bike’s cutting-edge specification and backs up its sporty potential, while the brake hoses have been optimised to improve braking control in sportier riding, especially under harder stopping forces.

Yamaha Ride Control (YRC)
Further maintaining the mix of nostalgic style with the latest in high performance technology, XSR900 GP riders can customise their riding experience via Yamaha Ride Control (YRC). For simpler use, engine power characteristics and rider aids are integrated to quickly allow changes to the level of electronic intervention depending on rider preferences and road conditions.

Three pre-set integrated riding modes, ‘SPORT’, ‘STREET’ and ‘RAIN’ feature factory settings with different intervention levels to suit different conditions. These are complemented by two Custom settings, which enable the rider to manually select their own power and intervention settings for the various electronically controlled, lean-sensitive rider aids – all of which can be set using a smartphone via the MyRide app.

5″ TFT meter with full connectivity
A new five-inch full colour TFT display is housed in the retro-styled cockpit. While riders can choose from four different themes to suit a range of mindsets, a traditional analogue-style tachometer theme, inspired by race bikes of yesteryear truly enhances the period riding experience.

For an enriched riding experience, smart phone connectivity comes as standard on the XSR900 GP via a built-in Communication Control Unit (CCU), ensuring riders can stay connected while riding by linking their smart phone with their machine via the free MyRide Link app. As well as seeing call and message notifications on the 5” TFT display, a new dimension is added to the ride by the possibility of taking calls and listening to music via a Bluetooth headset*. Once connected, riders can also make use of the integrated Garmin StreetCross navigation system which will display Turn-By-Turn navigation on the 5” TFT dashboard.

There is also the option to provide power to external devices by the new USB Type C socket located near the dashboard.

*Bluetooth headset not included with bike

New ergonomic switchgear
New integrated handlebar switch assemblies enable the rider to operate the wider range of functions of the new XSR900 GP including smart phone connectivity, navigation and riding modes as well as interrogating the various menu options.

Featuring a clear, logical and simple design – the shape, movement and ergonomic layout of the buttons have been designed with intuitive movement in mind, meaning riders can cycle through the different functions with ease.

To aid navigation of busy road environments, a soft-click of the indicator switch will flash the turn signals three times for use when lane-changing or when only brief indication is required. A full-click of the switch will result in continuous flashing until 15 seconds has passed and when the machine has travelled more than 150 metres.

A new Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function reacts to sudden braking by engaging the hazard lights to warn road users behind the vehicle is stopping at speed in an emergency situation.

Extra support from advanced six-axis IMU with lean sensitive rider aids
Developed directly from the electronic systems on the R1, the XSR900 GP’s high-tech six-axis IMU constantly measures acceleration in the forward-backward, up-down and left-right directions – as well as the angular velocity in the machine’s pitch, roll and yaw directions.

The six-axis IMU is able to send data in real time to the ECU which controls the suite of electronic rider aids, including the lean sensitive Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS) as well as a front wheel Lift Control System (LIF) and Brake Control System (BC).

XSR900 GP also becomes the first Sport Heritage model to be equipped with the third-generation quick shift system, enhancing the ride by enabling clutchless downshifts while accelerating and clutchless upshifts under deceleration in addition to the standard functionality.

Nick Sanders’ first ever eBike World Ride on the Yamaha Wabash RT

On 15th September 2023, legendary globetrotter Nick Sanders MBE begins another epic trip around the world on two wheels. Already famous for his numerous record-breaking adventures on a Yamaha motorcycle – as well as many journeys by bicycle – Nick is setting out on the first-ever circumnavigation of the world by electric eBike.

Starting at Yamaha Motor Europe’s HQ in Amsterdam on 15th September 2023, Nick will ride his Yamaha Wabash RT to Athens on leg 1 of this amazing 229-day challenge.

After a ferry trip to Israel the world trip continues with a 35-day ride through the Middle East to Dubai, a distance of around 5000 kms. Then it’s on to India where Nick and his Yamaha Wabash RT will ride from Mumbai, north to New Delhi and then into Nepal. After 40 days and nearly 6000 kms, this leg of the World Ride ends in Kolkata (Calcutta) in late December.

Leg 4 is through South East Asia in December and January, taking in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and then onto Malaysia during a 31 day/4400 kms cycle. Then leg 5 sees Nick take his Yamaha Wabash RT across Singapore, Jakarta and Bali where he’ll depart for Australia on 11th February.

Australia is familiar territory to Nick, having ridden through this vast country on cycles and motorcycles on many occasions. Starting in Darwin, leg 6 heads right through the centre of the red-soiled outback, then south into Adelaide and Melbourne before arriving in Sydney on 8th March after a gruelling 25 day/4600 kms trip – one of the toughest tests for rider and machine. Leg 7 in early March is a 6 day/1050 kms ride from Christchurch to Auckland in New Zealand, and then it’s off to the USA for a West to East crossing starting in LA and ending in New York on 5th April.

The final stage starts on 7th April from Madrid and runs through the Pyrenees, across France, and back to Yamaha Motor Europe’s HQ in Amsterdam on 17th April 2024.

Having covered 33,076 kms over 229 riding days on his Yamaha Wabash RT, Nick Sanders hopes to be the first man to set another two-wheel record in the circumnavigation of the world. Taking with him only a cycling jersey, shorts, spare T-shirt and spare shorts – as well as camera gear and a drone – Nick’s target is to cover over 160 kms per day on the Yamaha Wabash RT.

“I’ve been working with Yamaha for many years now, and I know that their quality and reliability is second to none. The new Yamaha Wabash RT Gravel eBike is the perfect choice for this latest record attempt. I’ve been training hard and slimmed down to 70 kilos to be 100% fit for this journey. I’m really looking forward to this ground-breaking eBike World Trip which has been made possible with Yamaha’s support – including a total of 8 battery swaps at strategic locations. See you in Amsterdam in 229 days!”

Yamaha Off Road Competition range celebrates 50 Years of YZ

50 years of winning. 50 years of innovation. 50 years of YZ.

Yamaha was born to race. Right from day one Yamaha put competition at the heart of its operations. And 50 years ago, Yamaha launched its first YZ production motocross models – the same year that the company won its first ever Motocross World Championship with Hakan Andersson on a factory YZM250. It was the beginning of a new era for the sport, and over the last half century Yamaha has established itself as one of the most innovative and competitive brands in the 4-stroke and 2-stroke classes.

Yamaha are marking this significant moment in the company’s history with an all new YZ250F that has been created with the immense knowledge gained during half a century of competition in every major GP category.

To commemorate 50 successful years since the first Yamaha YZ models made a lasting impact on the motocross racing world, the 2024 line-up will include exclusive YZ250F, YZ450F, YZ250 and YZ125 50th Anniversary Edition models. Featuring racing white bodywork, purple seats, black wheels and retro-styled purple/pink graphics, these 50th Anniversary Edition bikes offer every Yamaha rider the chance to be a part of this very special occasion.

The 50th Anniversary Edition colouring is inspired by the bold designs used on the YZ250 and YZ125 in the mid-1990s – a period of transition for Yamaha motocross machines which was soon to be followed by the arrival of the first YZ 4-stroke in 1998 and the beginning of a new era of ‘Yamaha Blue’ colours for the company’s Off Road Competition models.

The introduction of the new YZ250F reinforces the range to make the 2024 Yamaha Off Road Competition line-up stronger than ever – with a diverse choice of 4-strokes, 2-strokes, motocross, enduro, youth and kids’ bikes.

New generation YZ250F: Lighter, sharper and more advanced
The YZ250F has proved beyond doubt that it is one of the most competitive 250cc 4-stroke motocross bikes at every level. With a distinguished race winning record in Motocross Grand Prix and US Supercross – as well as three consecutive MX2 Manufacturer’s World Championships – this bike is a born winner.

For the 2024 model year Yamaha introduce the new generation YZ250F that features an all-new YZ450F-based frame, ultra-compact bodywork, increased mid to high speed power and improved tuning functionalities with the new Power Tuner App. By retaining the highly acclaimed strengths of the existing model, the 2024 YZ250F is designed to give an easier, smoother and faster ride.

All-new YZ450F-based aluminium frame
The new generation YZ250F is equipped with an all-new aluminium frame that has been proven on the latest YZ450F. This new frame provides lighter and easier handling and gives more feedback – enabling the rider to push harder and exploit more fully the YZ250F’s powerful low to mid rpm torque.

The key improvement on the new lightweight frame is the relocation of the head pipe which is now 15mm lower – a significant change which centralizes the bike’s mass for increased handling agility and quicker directional changes. The new head pipe is also thinner and lighter and contributes towards the reduced weight of the new YZ250F.

To match the new head pipe the tank rails are also mounted much lower for 2024 and incorporate a new U-shaped profile at the rear that changes the frame’s balance of rigidity in order to achieve an idealized degree of controlled flex. With its revised layout giving a lower centre of gravity – combined with improved shock absorption – the all-new chassis promotes the sense of rider/machine unity and delivers faster and more agile cornering.

Completely new slimline bodywork with flatter seat
All-new bodywork gives the new YZ250F a much tighter, lighter and slimmer look and feel, and this contributes towards making the bike easier, smoother and faster. The complete bodywork is new for 2024, and like the new frame, is based on the successful design used on the latest YZ450F.

The shroud width is 50mm narrower, making it easier for the rider to shift bodyweight forwards. Rider mobility is also enhanced by the new seamless seat which is 6mm narrower and also much flatter, with the height difference between the front and rear reduced by 15mm for the 2024 model.

The compact, newly designed front fender promotes better airflow to the radiators for improved cooling efficiency – and the short and flat rear fender and slim side panels further enhance the tighter and lighter look of this new generation 250cc 4-stroke.

Revised rider triangle
Subtle but significant improvements are made to the YZ250F’s ergonomics with detail changes to the geometry of the rider triangle. The new flatter seat is 5mm higher, while footpegs are mounted 5mm lower, giving a total 10mm increase for a more flexible leg position. Handlebar position is relocated closer back towards the rider, and together with the new seat and footpeg positions this gives improved ergonomics and increased controllability, enabling the rider to optimize the increased agility of the new chassis.

Optimized KYB suspension settings
The KYB suspension is widely regarded as being one of the best in class, and for 2024 the new generation YZ250F’s forks and rear shock internals are added to bring out the optimum performance of the new frame. Revised front and rear damping settings offer improved shock absorption and traction, and a new hand adjustable compression damping system on the front forks makes suspension set up quicker and easier.

For added protection against scratches and debris the fork shrouds wrap further around the sides of the inner tubes, and for increased durability the KYB forks are equipped with new long-lip seals that prevent dirt ingress.

Improved rear brake feel
The rear brake plays a key role in directional changes as well as effective corner entry and also when adjusting machine angle when in the air, and the degree of feel transmitted to the rider is crucial for maintaining control. For this reason, the YZ250F is equipped with a new rear hose with reduced rigidity that improves the balance of the brake input and gives the rider more accurate control.

Increased performance by efficient air management and FI setting
A new high efficiency air management system is used on the new YZ250F, with air now entering the airbox via a new rear duct system as featured on the MXGP and AMA SX race winning YZ450F. The compact new bodywork features ducts in the new side panels, frame and tank that channel fresh air into a new high capacity round profile air filter with a 30% increase in clean-side capacity – and the lower case is now made from rubber instead of plastic to promote air intake pulsation. The new rear duct air flow design contributes towards the increased mid to high speed performance and over rev characteristics of the 250cc 4-stroke reverse-head engine.

A new ECU features updated fuel and ignition mapping that is designed to optimize the performance gains achieved by the various engine changes. Riders familiar with the current model will feel the increased mid to high range performance that, together with the bike’s legendary low to mid-range torque, make the new YZ250F even more competitive in all conditions.

Low friction cam chain
The YZ250F engine is renowned for its strong low to mid-range torque and high levels of controllability in different conditions, and these strengths have made it one of the leading 250cc 4-strokes in motocross. Yamaha’s engineers have concentrated on retaining all of the positive attributes of this winning engine for 2024, while also working hard to increase its high speed performance.

To accommodate the increased performance the YZ250F is equipped with a new low friction cam chain that is wider and more durable. The DOHC engine also features new camchain sprockets as well as new tensioner settings that optimize the efficiency of the uprated engine.

New adjustable Traction Control System
The 2024 YZ250F is equipped with a new Traction Control System that offers two levels of assistance as well as an OFF function. Operated by the latest Power Tuner App, this system is designed to give the rider increased controllability on wet or loose surfaces – and by preventing the machine losing traction entirely it enables the rider to fully concentrate on the track ahead.

Launch Control System
The YZ250F benefits from a new Launch Control System with ‘Rev limit’ function that gives the rider the option to set with maximum launch rpm between 6.000 rpm and 11.000 rpm in 500 rpm increments. This launch Control allows the rider to power off the line at full throttle and concentrate fully on getting the holeshot.

When the launch control system recognizes that the start has been completed the Rev limit function automatically turns off and when 3rd gear is reached the Launch Control system is deactivated.

Next generation simplified Power Tuner App
Yamaha’s Power Tuner App is one of the most significant developments in recent years. The company was an early pioneer of wireless engine tuning, and the latest generation system is designed to be even easier to use. The 2024 YZ250F Power Tuner App now features a “Quick Tuning” option with a scrollbar that runs from ‘Smooth’ to ‘Aggressive’. It’s the easiest and most intuitive system ever used on the bike, and it is designed for superfast trackside tuning.

And the latest Power Tuner retains the 4×4 matrix that allows detailed mapping changes designed for professional teams that want to achieve the ultimate performance – and there’s a new multifunction switch that enables the YZ250F rider to switch between two uploaded mappings during a session.

The Power Tuner App can also be used to set the YZ250F’s traction control and launch control parameters, and the system can also record lap by lap data, allowing the team and rider to evaluate the effectiveness of various different mapping settings. Furthermore, the App features a suspension set up section that offers advice and suggested settings to suit different riding situations.

YZ250F 50th Anniversary Edition
It is 50 years since the Yamaha brand entered the motocross scene with its first production bikes, and during this half century the company’s YZ models have established themselves as some of the most competitive and innovative machines in every major category.

The new YZ250F 50th Anniversary Edition celebrates this significant chapter in the YZ’s history, and also highlights Yamaha’s first ever Motocross World Championship title. Featuring an exclusive 1990’s inspired historic colour scheme together with all of the sophisticated technology found on the latest generation YZ250F, this 50th Anniversary Edition gives riders the chance to own an exclusive machine. XSR900 DB40 Prototype Breaks Cover at Goodwood Festival of Speed

Riding up the prestigious Goodwood Hill on each of the festival’s four days, the XSR900 DB40 Prototype represents a blend of Yamaha’s rich racing history and cutting edge modern technology in line with the Sport Heritage mantra.

The XSR900 DB40 Prototype is the latest model based on the XSR900 platform to pay homage to Yamaha’s racing identity. Last month, custom house caferacersofinstagram unveiled their first Yard Built for Good project at the Bike Shed Motorcycle Club Show, a customised XSR900 harking back to Yamaha’s Grand Prix racers of the 80s and 90s.

This followed the unveiling of a range of Yamaha Genuine Accessories which transformed the standard XSR900 into a RACER with a café racer style mini fairing and race-styled single seat cover. This XSR900 RACER made its debut at the Bike Shed Motorcycle Show before legendary French Grand Prix racer Christian Sarron took to the famous Wheels and Waves Punk’s Peak race in June.

Yamaha’s Sport Heritage range combines the emotion-evoking design of some of the most iconic motorcycles in the brand’s history and combines this with the very latest high performance chassis and engine technology, paying homage to the racing machines that have shaped Yamaha’s past without compromising modern day performance.

For 2023, this nod to Yamaha’s illustrious racing history goes even further. Following the unveiling of the XSR900 RACER accessories and the 1980s Grand Prix-inspired CafeRacersofInstagram Yard Built for Good special earlier this year, the XSR900 DB40 Prototype has broken cover for the first time at the iconic Goodwood Festival of Speed.

Riding up the prestigious Goodwood Hill on each of the festival’s four days, the XSR900 DB40 Prototype represents a blend of Yamaha’s rich racing history and cutting edge modern technology in line with the Sport Heritage mantra.

Former YZR500 Grand Prix racer Niall Mackenzie, who rode for Marlboro Yamaha in 1989 before three further years on Yamaha machinery in the early nineties, will take to the hill on the XSR900 DB40 Prototype on Thursday and Friday before a selection of journalists and VIPs take the machine to the hill on the weekend.

In the 1980s, Yamaha pioneered a new wave of technological advancement in motorcycle engineering by introducing the Deltabox chassis in their Grand Prix race machines.

This technology would soon filter down to road bikes, and now, 40 years on, the Deltabox style design remains at the heart of many Yamaha motorcycles.

Based on the XSR900, the XSR900 DB40 Prototype – named to celebrate 40 years of the Deltabox chassis – is powered by the award-winning 890cc ‘CP3’ triple-cylinder engine, housed in the very latest version of the Deltabox style frame.

The name ‘Deltabox’ comes from the amalgamation of the word ‘Delta’, the fourth letter of the Greek alphabet, represented by a triangle and the word ‘box’.

From a side view, the Deltabox is formed of a triangle linking the head pipe to the swingarm pivot while the cross-section is box-shaped. This relationship between the steering head and the pivot point offers outstanding rigidity and feedback where a rider will need it most. The cross-shaped box section allows for a greater surface area while providing lighter weight and a higher level of rigidity.

Yamaha debuted the Deltabox chassis in their 1982 YZR500 OW61 Grand Prix machine, while the frame’s first appearance in a production racer came just three years later, the TZR250, bringing the characteristics of the YZR factory race machinery to the road. The Deltabox has since become synonymous with Yamaha’s Supersport models, including the revolutionary R1 launched 25 years ago this year.

Yamaha Celebrates 25th Anniversary of the Revolutionary R1

Yamaha Motor Europe is proud to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ground-breaking R1 with dedicated activities planned at the Yamaha Racing Experience (YRE).

This year the YRE will be held at the legendary Mugello Circuit in Italy on the 21st and 22nd of July and will bring together some of Yamaha’s biggest stars and enthusiasts to honour the remarkable legacy of the iconic machine.

Since its launch, the Yamaha R1 has redefined standards of performance and innovation in the industry. Its 25-year journey of evolution is a testament to Yamaha’s dedication to engineering excellence, which cemented the R1 as an icon of speed, power, and cutting-edge technology that revolutionised the sports bike market.

Making its grand entrance in 1998, at the core of the R1 was an innovative, compact, and lightweight 998cc, liquid-cooled, 20-valve, double overhead camshaft, four-cylinder engine which featured a five-valve-per-cylinder head with redesigned valve sizes to boost torque and improved porting.

However, the real game-changer came from Project Leader Kunihiko Miwa’s ingenious decision to create the world’s first vertically stacked gearbox in a production motorcycle, which resulted in a lighter, shorter engine that allowed for a longer swing arm, enhancing traction while maintaining a conventional sports bike wheelbase.

In addition to its innovative powertrain, the 1998 R1 introduced an all-new aluminium Deltabox II chassis, a heavily braced alloy swingarm, a Yamaha Monoshock shock absorber, and upside-down 41mm fully adjustable front forks developed in collaboration with Öhlins.

This Grand Prix-inspired compact chassis and suspension setup offered unrivalled handling and manoeuvrability, setting a new benchmark for modern sports bikes, with the R1 producing an astonishing 150PS while weighing only 177 kg.

The R1’s racing success was equally remarkable. At the prestigious Isle of Man TT, the bike made history in 1999 when David Jefferies stormed to the TT Formula One victory, in the process setting a record 121,235 mph lap, before going on to win the Senior race and the Production TT, confirming the R1’s racing pedigree to the world.

As Yamaha continued to refine and improve the R1, the 2000 model was launched with revisions to over 250 parts, including engine and chassis enhancements, more aerodynamic bodywork, and a new titanium muffler.

Two years later, in 2002, Yamaha introduced the next generation of R1, led by Project Leader Yoshikazu Koike, which showcased a groundbreaking vacuum-controlled fuel injection system that provided refined power output and a new Deltabox III frame which was lighter and yet 30% stronger in torsional rigidity.

The year 2004 marked the arrival of the fourth generation R1 featuring new engine with larger bore and shorter stroke and closed-deck cylinder design, as well as fracture-split (FS) connecting rods, RAM-air intake, new under-seat exhausts, revised chassis geometry and a sharpened body design. For the first time a production motorcycle was achieving the 1:1 power to weight ratio, thanks to the 180PS delivered by the completely new power train.

The R1 that was unveiled in 2007 boasted Yamaha’s innovative YCC-T ride-by-wire throttle system and electronically controlled variable air intake funnels (YCC-I). Project Leader Makato Shimamoto also introduced a new four-valve design motor, slipper clutch,  an improved Deltabox frame as well as improved brakes and suspension.

Building on its legacy, Yamaha launched the next generation R1 in 2009, featuring a ground-breaking crossplane crankshaft engine, directly derived from Yamaha’s MotoGP M1. This unique design reduced inertia forces and delivered a more linear throttle connection.  Next to that, Development Leader Toyoshi Nishida introduced twin fuel injectors, a new lightweight aluminium Deltabox frame, cast magnesium subframe and cutting-edge electronics.

This model set the standard for handling and performance in the world of racing in 2009, highlighted by the incredible performance of American Ben Spies in WorldSBK, with the rookie recording 14 wins in 28 races to claim the 2009 title.

Reinforcing the competitiveness of the R1 that year, the YART Yamaha EWC team was crowned Endurance World Champions, while Leon Camier won 19 out of 26 races on his way to lifting the British Superbike Championship, and Katsuyuki Nakasuga clinched his first Japanese Superbike Championship title.

Constantly looking to innovate, the 2012 R1 incorporated a traction control system that adjusted ignition timing, fuel delivery, and throttle opening to maintain optimal traction, enhancing drivability and fuel consumption.

To mark another ground-breaking step, the 2015 R1 was launched with a powerful 200PS engine and was the first production motorcycle equipped with a six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and electronic support systems – developed and proven in MotoGP. With a dry weight of 179 kg and a host of racing features the 2015 R1 has been a sensation. Project Chief Hideki Fujiwara also introduced the top-of-the-line, limited edition R1M which featured electronically controlled suspension, a lightweight carbon-fibre cowl, and an onboard data logger to cater to the needs of serious racing and track day devotees.

The 2018 R1 model offered riders an even more extensive array of sophisticated electronics, and the addition of a Quick Shift System (QSS) with a blipper function for clutchless up and downshifting took the R1 and R1M’s performance on the street and track to the next level. The R1’s handling performance was refined with more progressive mapping on the Lift Control System as well as revised suspension settings – and the Öhlins Electronic Racing Suspension on the R1M featured a revised interface for a more intuitive set-up.

For 2020, the R1 featured a CP4 engine  with new cylinder head, camshafts and injection system – while the extensive electronic rider aids were refined to ensure even higher levels of controllability. A new EBM (Engine Brake Management) enabled the rider to select one of three different engine braking forces to match riding conditions – and the new Brake Control (BC) system gave added confidence and control when cornering. With revised damping valves and a reduced spring rate, the R1’s 43mm KYB forks provided increased feedback for a more natural handling feeling. And for improved chassis performance and reduced lap times the R1M was equipped with a new rear shock and uprated Öhlins ERS NPX gas pressurised forks.

Over recent years, the R1 and R1M have continued to evolve and remain a dominant force on the racing scene, with Pata Yamaha Prometeon Official WorldSBK Team’s Toprak Razgatlıoğlu and Andrea Locatelli leading the charge in the FIM Superbike World Championship. The highlight of which was Razgatlıoğlu’s 2021 WorldSBK Championship winning season that saw the Turkish rider rack up 13 race wins and 16 further podiums on his way to the title, while Italian Locatelli has grown from strength-to-strength on the R1 and has 11 podiums to his name so far.

On top of this, the R1 has demonstrated its prowess all over the world, with the Yamaha Factory Racing Team winning the historic Suzuka 8 Hours endurance race four times in a row between 2015-2018, plus Cameron Beaubier (2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020) and Jake Gagne (2021, 2022) securing seven of the last eight AMA Superbike titles.

In 2021, Nakasuga would lift an incredible tenth Japanese Superbike Championship, with Tommy Hill (2011), Josh Brookes (2015), Tarran Mackenzie (2021), and Bradley Ray (2022) all being crowned British Superbike Champions on the R1.

As the legacy of the R1 continues to grow, Yamaha remains committed to pushing the boundaries of innovation with the introduction of the R1 GYTR. GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing) is Yamaha’s in-house specialist racing component division that has been developing performance enhancing technology for over 40 years. Designed specifically for track-day riders and racers who recognise Yamaha’s winning performance and premium quality, the 2023 R1 GYTR is faster and more precise than ever. Yamaha’s new PW-XM flagship eMTB drive unit

Yamaha’s new PW-XM flagship eMTB drive unit: Marking thirty years as the pioneer of the e-Bike system.

In recent years the global demand for eBikes has expanded dramatically as bike manufacturers have fully embraced the latest drive unit technology and introduced stylish new models offering increased range and performance. The eBike segment now accounts for a significant proportion of the total bicycle market, and this quiet and economical form of transport is the fastest-growing sector in zero emission personal mobility.

Yamaha Motor pioneered the first e-Bike back in 1993. It mounted the first iteration of the company’s signature Power Assist System (PAS), in which an electric motor is used to provide an assistive force to the pedalling power of the rider in a manner that feels natural and in tune with human perceptions. Simply named the “PAS” after its headline feature, the bicycle was hailed as the first of its kind in the world and enjoyed a successful market debut.

Key factors behind the worldwide success of Yamaha’s range of compact, high torque drive units include class-leading electronic control technology that provides instant power with a seamless and natural feeling – as well as high quality, outstanding reliability, and a first-class global backup.

New PW-XM: Yamaha’s new ultra-light flagship eMTB motor

The new PW-XM is the lightest drive unit in the range, and its launch 30 years after Yamaha invented the eBike underlines just how far this zero-emission technology has progressed.

Aimed at the high-end eMTB market, the PW-XM features a specifically-designed magnesium housing that keeps its overall weight down to just 2.6 kg. Yamaha has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of specialist magnesium components for its 1,000 cc R1M Supersport motorcycle, and this knowledge has been used in the construction of the ultra-light PW-XM.

With the reduced weight and the improved heat dissipation, this flagship motor is able to produce consistently strong torque even when under high loads for long periods.

As well as standing for ‘Magnesium’, the ‘M’ in PW-XM is also a reference to the motor’s assembly place in Morimachi, Japan – a bike-centric city famous for its mountain biking and cycling tourism, making it the perfect place for the birth of this new flagship eMTB drive unit.

Highest torque-to-weight ratio

With a maximum torque figure of 85 Nm and weight of just 2.6 kg, the PW-XM has the highest torque-to-weight ratio in the Yamaha range, making it an ideal drive unit for eMTB applications. It is also fully compatible with Yamaha’s existing PW-X3 and PWseries S2 drive units, enabling manufacturers to create three different eBikes using the same chassis design.

Yamaha Pure Ride: Ideal mountain biking power delivery

With its minimal external dimensions combined with Yamaha’s highest torque-to-weight ratio, the PW-XM is designed specifically for the premium eMTB market. Its compact layout offers greater freedom to bike manufacturers in their next generation chassis designs – and the powerful torque ensures strong performance on Alpine tracks, steep hills or sandy trails.

Pure Ride is how Yamaha describes the unique power delivery of the new PW-XM. Using state-of-the-art sensing electronics including Automatic Assist Mode, tuning detection algorithms and Zero Cadence Technology, the PW-XM rider will experience strong, seamless and natural feeling power at all times.

Displays and batteries

The new PW-XM can be paired with any of the company’s displays and batteries, best in conjunction with the minimalistic and highly technical Interface X.

PW-XM Product Highlights

  • All new premium eMTB drive unit, designed for extreme off-road challenges as well as sporty trail rides.

New Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Rally

Yamaha’s ultimate high specification long distance adventure bike.

The new Ténéré 700 World Rally represents the ultimate version of Yamaha’s long distance adventure bike and can trace its heritage back to the very beginning of the world’s toughest race.

The story began back in 1979 when Yamaha won the first ever Dakar Rally. Inspired by this success and encouraged by the growing interest in long distance rally events, the company embarked upon the development of a machine that would forever change the motorcycle world.

Introduced in 1983, the original Ténéré is recognised as one of the most influential and iconic motorcycles of the 20th century. Equipped with a large capacity fuel tank, rugged chassis and high torque engine, Yamaha’s first ever Adventure bike gave thousands of riders the opportunity to go to faraway places and discover new horizons.

No other Adventure bike comes close to matching the pure racing heritage of the legendary Yamaha Ténéré. Not only did it enable a whole new breed of moto adventurers to live their dreams – it also inspired many riders to compete in the world’s toughest Rally events that have tested the rider and machine to the limit.

Team Yamaha’s annual Dakar campaigns witnessed some incredible performances by desert specialists including Yamaha Motor France CEO Jean Claude Olivier – and of course desert legend Stéphane Peterhansel who took six victories with Yamaha and ensured his name will live forever in the record books. To pay tribute to these riders and the machines they rode, Yamaha is launching a special version of the Ténéré that blends true racing heritage with modern day performance.

Initiated at the beginning of 2022, Yamaha’s Switch ON strategy represents the beginning of an exciting new era in the design and production of the next generation of electric vehicles. Many commuters are now actively seeking zero emission personal transportation, and the growing range of electric Yamaha models offers a clean, reliable and efficient solution for commuting, leisure and sporting applications.

Created with Yamaha’s 30 years of EV experience

Yamaha introduced the world’s first production eBike in 1993, and now, 30 years later, the premium Japanese brand is at the forefront of the development, design and manufacture of zero emission 2-wheel electric scooters, eBikes and pedelecs. Yamaha is also a key manufacturer of drive units that power many brands of eBikes produced by other manufacturers. At the same time as being a major producer of zero emission vehicles that help to contribute towards a cleaner environment, Yamaha has also accelerated its programme to become a carbon neutral manufacturer by 2035.

BOOSTER Easy

New BOOSTER Easy and BOOSTER

Yamaha’s new BOOSTER Easy eBike and BOOSTER S-pedelec electric have been developed in Europe to meet the rapidly increasing demand for clean, quiet and accessible urban transport. A few decades ago, Yamaha’s legendary BW’s scooter – along with the best-selling MBK Booster – captured the imagination of a generation of younger riders who were looking for fun and freedom on two wheels. Powered by a class-leading Yamaha drive unit and featuring a rugged and timeless chassis design, the new electric BOOSTER models are designed to offer the today’s urban dwellers an easy, enjoyable and affordable way to move around their towns and cities with zero emissions.

Yamaha’s new BOOSTER Easy and BOOSTER look virtually identical and are technically very similar, sharing the same lightweight chassis design. The difference is in their performance: BOOSTER Easy is an eBike with a maximum pedal assisted speed of 25km/h, while the BOOSTER is an AM licence S-pedelec or electric moped that can power to a maximum pedal assisted speed of 45km/h.

Contemporary and minimalistic design

Fun to ride, simple to maintain and accessible to an extremely wide and diverse range of customers of all ages and backgrounds, the BOOSTER models are the spiritual successors to the original ‘fat tyre’ 50cc Yamaha and MBK scooters that played a big part in the lives of thousands of European teenagers growing up in the 1980s and 90s.

The contemporary and minimalist design features an exposed diecast aluminium front frame as well as spoked wheels with fat 20” x 4” tyres, and a classic U-frame configuration that makes getting on and off so easy.   Driven by an ultra-compact and lightweight Yamaha PW-S2 drive unit that delivers seamless power, the new BOOSTER models are ready to make every part of the metropolis easily accessible to the new generation of riders who live, work and play in the city.

BOOSTER Easy

Exclusive Yamaha body components

The BOOSTER models benefit from a range of exclusive chassis components that add extra fun and functionality to the look and feel of these new zero emission vehicles. The front end of the bike features Yamaha-exclusive fork covers, a front plate cover and front mudguard as well as a Supernova headlight to give a sleek and coordinated look.

Cables are hidden away behind ducts for cleaner lines, and a chain cover and engine covers underline the BOOSTERS’ high quality of finish. The rear carrier provides plenty of carrying space, and both models feature an adjustable Royal Orbis seat and Integrated Koso LED taillight.

Comfortable and agile, perfect for urban mobility

The BOOSTER models represent the next generation in urban mobility and are amongst the most accessible powered two wheel models available today. Riding comfort is assured on uneven road surfaces thanks to the fat 20” x 4” tyres that offer excellent grip on different road surfaces. The adjustable seat height enables riders of varying sizes to find their ideal riding position – and, together with the shock absorbing high-profile tyres, the smooth front suspension soaks up the bumps. As well as offering easy ingress, the strong and simple U-frame design with its unique diecast aluminium front section ensures a low centre of gravity for Easy agility, making this zero emission 2-wheeler the smarter way to move.

Smooth and reliable Yamaha power

Yamaha has 30 years worth of experience in the design and manufacture of high-tech eBike drive units, and the BOOSTER models are equipped with the very latest PWseries S2 motor that is one of the most sophisticated designs in the class. Developed with the philosophy that ‘less is more’ the quiet-running PWseries S2 drive unit is extremely light and compact, weighing just 2.85 kg.

Producing 75Nm, the PWseries S2 has one of the highest torque-to-weight ratios in its class, giving the BOOSTER smooth and natural acceleration. In addition to its seamless power delivery, this reliable high-tech design also benefits from a number of class leading electronic control technologies that deliver an enjoyable and refined riding experience. Yamaha’s Zero Cadence technology provides instant assistance as soon as pedalling input is sensed, and the Automatic Support Mode provides additional power assistance when necessary – such as on hills or into headwinds – to ensure an easier and enjoyable riding experience.

Riders can also select the Zero Mode that completely disengages the drive unit and solely uses pedal power – and the Walk Assist Mode makes pushing the vehicle easy in situations such as pedestrian only zones where riding is not permitted.

BOOSTER S-pedelec electric

630 Wh 36V Yamaha battery

Both the BOOSTER Easy and BOOSTER are equipped with a 630Wh 36V battery that provides the PWseries S2 drive unit with an instant and reliable supply of power. The quickly detachable unit is located centrally for easy access as well as centralising mass for agile and responsive handling – and battery charging can be carried out both in-situ and remotely if the unit is removed.

Performance and range

BOOSTER Easy has a top assisted speed of 25km/h to comply with European eBike legislation – and riders can select the Zero mode for faster pedal-only riding on downhills. Five modes are available – +ECO, ECO, STD, HIGH and AUTO, enabling the rider to choose the appropriate setting to suit the local terrain and their individual range requirements.

The torque ratio supplied by the Yamaha drive unit is set at 50% for +ECO mode and goes up to 280% in HIGH mode, and the typical range with a 75 kg rider is up to 120 km in +ECO mode through to 60 km in HIGH mode.

BOOSTER is being classed as an electric moped (L1e) riders requires an AM licence and the appropriate insurance. The +ECO, ECO, STD, HIGH and AUTO modes can be selected by the rider to match the conditions, and a range of 110 km(+ECO mode) up to 50km (HIGH mode) can be achieved with a 75kg rider.

The torque ratio supplied by the Yamaha drive unit starts at 60% in +ECO mode and increases to 400% in HIGH mode, giving this electric moped a drive unit assistance reducing at 40km/h and stopping before 45km/h.

Intuitive user interfaces

BOOSTER is equipped with the latest centrally located Yamaha Display C user interface featuring a large 2.8″ full colour dot matrix TFT display and a separate control switch. Information displayed includes battery capacity, riding speed, assist mode, range, clock, trip distances, cadence, calorie consumption and time. A range of fitness and navigation apps can be accessed by connecting a Smartphone via Bluetooth® to enhance the overall riding experience.

BOOSTER Easy features Yamaha’s simple to read Display A interface that’s equipped with a 1.7″ LCD screen. Its basic design features integral buttons, and ‘always on’ information includes speedometer, battery capacity indicator and assist mode, as well as selectable trip meter, odometer and range.

Omnichannel: a seamless buying experience for Yamaha BOOSTER customers

To ensure that every customer experiences the highest levels of satisfaction from their initial enquiry right through to the purchase and delivery of their new BOOSTER Easy and BOOSTER, Yamaha has developed an Omnichannel distribution system that delivers a seamless buying experience from start to finish.

The heart of the system is a new e-commerce platform working in partnership with the new network of eBike Experience Centres operating within Yamaha’s existing European PTW network. The key advantage of the Omnichannel system is that customers can visit a Yamaha eBike Experience Centre to see and feel the eBike, take a test ride and seek advice from the fully trained dealer personnel before placing their order with confidence.

Once they have chosen their new BOOSTER the customer can go online to confirm their purchase and arrange home delivery (only for BOOSTER Easy) or pick up at the dealer. This new industry-leading system is designed to offer customers the best combination of on site and online services – and Omnichannel removes the uncertainty that is sometimes associated with a purely virtual sales experience where there is no physical element or human interaction.

Yamaha launches the Ténéré Spirit Experience for 2023

Yamaha launches the Ténéré Spirit Experience for 2023. The ultimate Rally Raid Adventure for every Ténéré owner!

Launched in 2019, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 has opened up an exciting new world of freedom and adventure for over 40,000 European riders. With its high torque CP2 engine, agile handling and serious long range capabilities over virtually any terrain, the Ténéré 700 is the most versatile motorcycle ever produced by Yamaha.

Built with the same rugged DNA as the original Yamaha XT bikes that won the very first Dakar Rally – and went on to challenge for the podium in the world’s toughest event for over 40 years – the Ténéré unleashes a rider’s spirit of adventure and enables everyone to discover what is beyond the next horizon.

As well as being the definitive adventure bike for riders looking for a lightweight round the world machine, the Ténéré has proved its outstanding Rally performance in 2022 with Ténéré World Raid Team’s legendary rider Alessandro Botturi winning the Tunisia Desert Challenge. Teammate Pol Tarrès made off-road history by taking his Yamaha Ténéré 700 further than any other 2-cylinder machine at the Erzberg Rodeo.

By bringing together the worlds of Touring, Rally and Enduro like no other machine, the Ténéré is undoubtedly the most outstanding Adventure model ever built by Yamaha. Now we stand before a new horizon, bringing customers closer to the true meaning of the word Ténéré and coming within a very short reach of actual Rally Racing. Yamaha has created a whole new immersive Ténéré Spirit Experience that opens up even more possibilities for Ténéré Riders with the same hunger for more adventure and our dedication to Riders for Health.

New Ténéré Spirit Experience for 2023
Yamaha is totally committed to ensuring that every rider is given the chance to enjoy their Ténéré to the full in a diverse range of riding situations. For 2023 Yamaha is introducing the exclusive new Ténéré Spirit Experience in which Ténéré owners can join some of the world’s most famous Rally Raid events, with the official Yamaha World Raid Team.

A total of 20 Yamaha customers and their motorcycles will be transported to their chosen Rally Raid where they will follow both the actual route and a parallel route to the race competitors and live alongside the race team in the bivouac each evening. For many riders this will be a once in a lifetime experience that will live in their memories forever, and for others it may ignite a desire to compete in Rally Raid in the future.

Run by former Enduro champion and Dakar Racing Team manager Marc Bourgeois through his company MBSM on behalf of Yamaha, the Ténéré Spirit Experience is open to Yamaha Ténéré owners who want to take their adventure riding to another level and get a real taste of Rally Raid but without the intense pressure of competition while also being able to experience the beauty the landscapes provide.

Total package from start to finish
Ténéré Spirit Experience is a total 360 degrees package that is designed to cover every aspect of the preparation, flights, bike transportation and every aspect of participation in the customer’s chosen Rally Raid. Before the event each rider can choose to attend a Ténéré Experience Centre* if they want to get tuition on their riding or navigation skills, and MBSM will take care of everything else from start to finish – including daily pre-event briefings, logistics, technical assistance, GPS tracker fitment, breakfast, dinner and camping.

Suitable for standard Ténéré models
Customers will be riding their own machine at the Ténéré Spirit Experience events, but they don’t need to worry about making too many modifications. MBSM technicians will equip every bike with special wheels and tyres as well as navigation equipment prior to the ride – and in some cases the participant’s Ténéré will also be required to be fitted with an extra fuel tank for specific events.

Join the Ténéré World Raid Team at four legendary events for 2023
The team of Marc Bourgois (MBSM) will take charge of both the Racing organisation and the Customer program under the umbrella of the Ténéré World Raid Team. Allowing for seamless integration of true racing spirit and customer experience.

The 2023 Ténéré Spirit Experience includes four of the most famous Rally Raid events, starting with the Morocco Desert Challenge in April, followed by the Hellas Rally in May. After the summer break the TSE and TWRT continue with Transanatolia in September and conclude with the Tunisia Desert Challenge in October.

Ténéré Spirit Experience riders will be sharing the bivouac with Ténéré World Raid Team riders Alessandro Botturi and Pol Tarrès who will be competing at selected events – and there will also be extra top level guest riders joining various races.

*MBSM Ténéré Centres in France and Morocco, plus the YORE Ténéré Experience in Wales

With a number of MBSM Ténéré Centre locations in France and Morocco, plus the YORE Ténéré Experience in Wales, riders can take additional off-road training as well as develop their navigation skills. New Yamaha XSR125 Legacy: Ride Through Time

Yamaha Sport Heritage goes from strength to strength

Since the introduction of the first Yamaha Sport Heritage models the segment has proved to be a great success with riders of all ages and experience who appreciate the special way these machines blend authentic style and individual character with modern technology and sports performance.

The XSR brand has quickly established itself as the definitive line for riders who appreciate iconic motorcycles with real character and genuine charm. Yet at the same time as paying tribute to some of Yamaha’s most iconic models from a previous era, the latest XSR700 and XSR900 are also engineered to deliver high levels of engine, chassis and braking performance – giving their riders the very best of both worlds.

Growing popularity
The increasing popularity of Yamaha Sport Heritage models has been stimulated by the influential custom movement – and in particular by the company’s Yard Built programme that has encouraged and facilitated the construction of many special projects by some of Europe’s most creative bike builders. Since its inception the Yard Built project has seen the creation of more than 60 exclusive, one-off specials based on production Sport Heritage models, and Yamaha will continue to invest in the Yard Built scene for 2022 and beyond.

The Yard Built movement has shown how a stock Yamaha production model is the ideal canvas to be transformed into everything from a flat tracker or scrambler through to a café racer. Influenced by some of Yamaha’s most iconic designs from the 60s, 70s and 80s – and equipped with timeless features including spoked wheels, historic colours and quality components – these Yard Built Yamahas have reinvigorated the custom scene and have strengthened the Faster Sons community.

Blending heritage design with contemporary technology in its own unique way, the Faster Sons philosophy is inspiring many riders to personalize their own machines and create something very special that reflects their own personal lifestyle – while at the same time adding an exciting new dimension to the world of motorcycling. Some of these retro design elements – such as spoked wheels – are now a standard feature on the new XSR125 Legacy, underlining how this stylish motorcycle takes the very best from the past and mixes it with the latest design and technology.

New XSR125 Legacy: Capturing the spirit of motorcycling
Yamaha has always been committed to building characterful motorcycles for the widest range of riders. Since July 1955 the needs and desires of the rider have always been the main focus of attention when developing new models. It is this customer-centric philosophy that has enabled the company to create iconic and game-changing models that have helped to change the face of motorcycling over the past seven decades.

The company’s mission can be summed up by the Japanese word ‘Kando’: That is to create deeply satisfying products that inspire the heart and spirit – and the new XSR125 Legacy is a perfect example of Kando in action.

Developed from the extremely successful XSR125 that was launched in 2021, the XSR125 Legacy features the same 125cc VVA engine and chassis architecture. However, the XSR125 Legacy benefits from a number of stylistic changes that transform the character of the motorcycle to give it a unique neo-retro look with a truly individual feel.

These refinements give the new model a distinctive silhouette and individual character that reinforce its links with classic Yamahas from the past while underlining the ethos of the Sport Heritage brand: “Inspired by the past, built for the future”. The XSR125 Legacy is indeed built to be a part of the future for every rider – beginner, experienced or returning – who appreciates timeless style and is looking for up-to-the-minute engine and chassis technology that delivers a quality ride.

Lightweight spoked wheels
The XSR125 Legacy is equipped with a range of model-specific features that work together harmoniously to create a machine with a special character that is sure to be appreciated by the many riders who love timeless style. The lightweight spoked wheels are reminiscent of the designs used on Yamaha’s pioneering racing machines from the 1960s and 1970s and are fundamental to giving this new Sport Heritage bike an authentic look and feel.

Gold-coloured rims
The XSR125 Legacy’s classic spoked wheels are equipped with beautifully finished gold-coloured alloy rims that underline the bike’s excellent build quality and reinforce its strong connection with some of Yamaha’s iconic models from the past.

Set against the all-black bodywork and chassis, the combination of spoked wheels and gold rims gives this 125cc neo-retro a truly individual character and timeless look that perfectly captures the spirit of the Faster Sons philosophy.

Dedicated colours and graphics
New graphics have been developed to echo the look of the larger capacity XSR models and reinforce the close family ties of the Sport Heritage line. Gold and silver pinstripes highlight the classic shape of the rounded fuel tank, while the minimalist gold coloured graphic on the sidepanels complements the gold-coloured rims.

The tank, sidepanels and fenders are finished in Historic Black, while the black coloured Deltabox frame, swingarm, upside-down forks and engine covers give a stylish and understated look that perfectly matches the character of this new 125cc motorcycle.

High performance Metzeler Karoo tyres
The XSR125 Legacy’s new spoked wheels are fitted with high performance Metzeler Karoo tyres that are designed to bring out the fun performance of this lightweight Faster Sons model. Their block pattern perfectly complements this new Sport Heritage bike and underlines its ability to deliver an exhilarating ride in a range of situations.

2-piece aluminium muffler cover
XSR Sport Heritage models are famed for their attention to detail and the use of quality components, and the new XSR125 Legacy is no exception. As well as a range of beautifully crafted aluminium brackets and fittings, this lightweight Faster Sons bike is equipped with a 2-piece aluminium muffler cover that reinforces its sporty specification.

Distinctive XSR silhouette
Seen from the side there’s no mistaking the XSR125 Legacy’s bloodline with its strong horizontal flow. The special combination of spoked wheels and upright riding position, as well as its fully exposed mechanical structure and naked good looks are sure to be appreciated by every rider – new or experienced – who knows exactly what they want from their motorcycle.

Class leading 125cc 11kW engine
The XSR125 Legacy is driven by one of the most appreciated and successful engines in the 125cc category. This potent and reliable 125cc 4-valve liquid cooled single cylinder Euro5 compliant powerplant is the same design as used in the MT-125 Hyper Naked and the R-125 Supersport. Producing a full 11kW – the maximum allowable in the A1 license class – this highly acclaimed engine is a strong all round performer.

One of the key technological features is Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system that enables the engine to deliver strong torque at lower engine speeds together with excellent performance at higher speeds. This makes the XSR125 Legacy a great performer in a variety of situations, from fast highway riding through to slower speed back road trips – and the ample torque output also ensures lively acceleration.

37mm upside-down front forks
Featuring a black finish that perfectly matches the bike’s black frame and engine, the XSR125 Legacy’s 37mm upside-down forks form part of a first class specification that is even more impressive considering that this 125cc neo-retro is available at such an affordable price. Whether riding through mountain bends, navigating urban traffic or heading off for a weekend tour, these front forks are built to give confident roadholding together with precision handling.

Strong and lightweight Deltabox frame
First developed for the company’s Grand Prix race bikes, Yamaha’s legendary Deltabox frame ensures precision cornering and confidence-inspiring straight line stability that enable the rider to enjoy the full potential of the best-in-class 11kW engine. With a compact 1.330mm wheelbase and accessible 815mm seat height, XSR riders can expect agile handling together with relaxed ergonomics that make this bike eminently suitable for a wide range of riders – whether starting out, experienced or returning to two-wheels.

Stylish LED lighting
Another example of how the XSR125 Legacy successfully blends timeless retro style with modern technology is the high tech lighting. Featuring a classic circular outer shell with LED position lamp, the main LED headlamp produces a powerful beam for excellent night time visibility – while the compact LED taillight emphasizes the light and elegant profile of the slim and sporty rear end.

Motorcycles Save Lives – Yamaha Motor Teams up With Riders For Health

Yesterday it was announced that Yamaha will participate in the Africa Eco Race and in this announcement it was revealed that global leaders in transport for healthcare, Riders for Health has become Yamaha’s title partner for the race to raise awareness for its projects.

Now, Yamaha is happy to officially announce a three-year partnership with Riders for Health, a humanitarian organisation which provides accessible healthcare to some of the most remote communities in regions across Africa by supplying and maintaining motorcycles and other suitable vehicles to health-focused organisations.

For more than 30 years, Riders for Health has been providing suitable transport to health care workers across some of the poorest and most hard to reach regions of Africa where citizens often find themselves without the basic health care that many of us take for granted.

Riders for Health has long used Yamaha motorcycles to provide these vital services, making the organisation a natural fit for this partnership as Yamaha looks to live by its ethos of contributing to society and bringing value to people’s lives.

Over the coming months in the lead up to the start of the Africa Eco Race, Yamaha and Riders for Health, in cooperation with its UK-based fundraising arm, Two Wheels for Life, will launch some exciting fundraising activities, so stay tuned for this news on either the Yamaha or Yamaha Motor For Riders’ website.

Andrea Coleman, Co-Founder Riders for Health and Two Wheels for Life

“Yamaha are close to our hearts. We have used their reliable AG bikes for over 30 years in our African programmes and their racing teams have supported our fundraising since the start of the charity. We are excited to announce this new, landmark three-year partnership between Riders for Health, Two Wheels for Life and Yamaha. Together we will show that motorcycles save lives!”

Eric de Seynes, President, Chief Executive Officer of Yamaha Motor Europe, Senior Executive Officer of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.

“We are proud to partner with Riders for Health. Our aim with this partnership is to raise awareness and raise funds for Riders’ projects in which they provide vital healthcare to communities in the most remote areas. We really hope that people are touched by Riders’ cause and participate in our upcoming fundraising activities.”

Yamaha Motor Develops TY-E 2.0 Electric Trials Bike

Yamaha Motor announced today that it has developed the TY-E 2.0 electric trials bike, which approaches achieving carbon neutrality from the perspective of motorcycling fun.

The Company plans to enter the bike in select rounds of the 2022 FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) Trial World Championship.

In 2021, the Company reviewed the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050 originally formulated in 2018 and set a new goal of aiming for carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities—including across the life cycles of its products—by 2050.

The project to develop the TY-E 2.0 is underway as one uniquely Yamaha approach for achieving carbon neutrality. Under its FUN x EV development concept, the TY-E 2.0 aims to provide more fun than internal combustion engines by taking advantage of the traits unique to electric vehicles, such as powerful low-down torque and strong acceleration.

The TY-E 2.0’s development progressed based on the first TY-E model announced in 2018, and features a newly designed monocoque frame made of composite laminates housing an electric power unit with improved performance through a combination of mechanical parts and electronic control. The bike also mounts a newly developed lightweight battery with approximately 2.5 times the capacity of the previous model.

The new TY-E 2.0 is scheduled to participate in the FIM Trial World Championship from June this year with Kenichi Kuroyama on the Yamaha Factory Racing Team, who also serves as its development rider. The TY-E 2.0 will also be exhibited at the Yamaha Motor booth at the 49th Tokyo Motorcycle Show to be held from March 25 to 27.

  • Monocoque frame made of composite laminates

The TY-E 2.0 employs a monocoque frame made of composite laminates to contribute to lighter weight and optimal rigidity. The layout of the power unit and battery was reviewed and revised to achieve a significantly lower center of gravity compared to the previous model.

  • Newly developed lightweight battery with approx. 2.5x more capacity

Yamaha developed a new high-capacity battery with higher output density and successfully kept the weight increase down to some 20% while achieving about 2.5 times greater capacity than the previous model.

  • Power unit further refined through a combination of mechanical parts and electronic control

Based on the previous model, traction has been improved by pairing mechanical parts such as the clutch and flywheel with carefully tuned electronic control for the motor that is capable of reading subtle changes in grip.
