New colours for Yamaha’s market leading scooters

Yamaha’s highly successful line-up of Sport Scooters and Urban Mobility vehicles continues to offer Europe’s riders one of the widest and most varied choices of 2- and 3-wheel models from 125cc through to 560cc.

Set against the many challenges brought about by the global pandemic, Yamaha’s Scooter sales have proved to be extremely strong, with the key models increasing their overall sales and taking a greater market share.

The NMAX 125 is far and away the best performer in its category, with a leading market share to date in 2021. This is a particularly competitive segment, and following the launch of the updated model in December 2020 the NMAX 125 has consistently outsold its closest rival by a considerable margin.

Yamaha’s dynamic XMAX 300/XMAX 300 Tech MAX Sport Scooter is an established name in the 300cc category, leading the market since its first appearance in 2017 – and is currently in close competition for market leadership with a strong market share from January to July 2021.

Best seller in 2020, the successful XMAX 125/XMAX 125 Tech Max is a pioneer among the most popular Sport Scooters in the 125cc category, and has recorded very strong sales right through summer 2021 – despite a late start to the sales season.

With its best-in-class weight and impressive autonomy, the Tricity 300 is Yamaha’s premium 3-wheel Urban Mobility model that has won a robust market share in the first half of 2021 despite pandemic-related production challenges. Considering the model is a relative newcomer to this very competitive segment, taking around 1-in-4 of all sales when competing against long-established models shows that the Tricity 300 offers the customer the right formula of performance, style and value.

Another Yamaha sales success can be seen with the recently updated D’elight. This lightest-in-class 125cc Urban Mobility model has recently doubled its sales volume, and this affordable and stylish scooter has taken an established position in its category to date in 2021.

1961-2021: 60 years of World Grand Prix racing for Yamaha

Racing has been an integral part of Yamaha’s DNA from the day that the factory was incorporated on 1 July 1955. At the time, the company proved its products on the racetrack just days after Yamaha Motor Company was founded, when the YA-1 won the Mount Fuji Ascent Race at its very first attempt on 10 July.

Spurred on by this success, Yamaha entered its first international race at Catalina, USA in 1958. By now, the company was developing some of the most competitive two-stroke machines, and the decision was made to experience the ultimate test of rider and machine by entering the 250cc RD48 race bike in the World Championship Grand Prix round in France in May 1961. Competing at the highest level put the company firmly on the map and marked the beginning of the brand’s transformation into one of the world’s most successful and innovative motorcycle manufacturers.

Just two years after Yamaha’s debut GP, Fumio Ito took the brand’s first ever GP win on the RD56 at the Belgian Grand Prix, and the company has never looked back since that day. 1964 saw Yamaha win its first World Championship as well as its first Constructor’s title with Phil Read in the 250cc class, the first of many victories in that decade. It was the beginning of an incredible journey for everyone involved in the company’s race programme, and during the past 60 years Yamaha has established itself as one of the most successful manufacturers with over 500 Grand Prix race wins, along with 38 rider titles, 37 constructor titles and 7 team titles.

Speed block: Yamaha’s historic racing colours
In 1964 the competition department debuted their 250cc Grand Prix racer with a new white fairing with a solid red stripe and red front fender. It proved to be a good omen, and factory rider Phil Read went on to win Yamaha’s first ever world title.

This bold, simple and dynamic red/white colour scheme soon established itself as the instantly-recognisable Yamaha look in Grand Prix road racing, and was the forerunner to Yamaha speed block: arguably the most famous and best-loved colour scheme ever featured on a racing motorcycle.

A white fairing with red speed block rapidly established itself as the definitive Yamaha racing colour scheme in Europe for the next two decades right through to the Rainey and Lawson era. The incredible public reaction to the recent unveiling of the factory M1 with its special 60th Anniversary speed block colours demonstrates that it is one of the company’s most evocative colour schemes that is popular with riders and fans of all ages. Simple, dynamic, timeless and instantly recognisable, speed block will forever be associated with Yamaha and its highly successful GP campaigns from a very special era in the company’s history.

New R-Series World GP 60th Anniversary models
To celebrate Yamaha’s long and illustrious Grand Prix racing history, the company has created a World GP 60th Anniversary livery for the 2022 R1, R7, R3 and R125 models.

Just like Yamaha’s famous World Championship winning machinery, the World GP 60th Anniversary R1, R7, R3 and R125 feature pure white bodywork with a strong horizontal red stripe and white vertical lines creating the red speed block. This authentic race bike colour scheme features an all-red front fender and gold-coloured wheels just like winning Yamaha’s factory bikes, and this timeless look is completed with a yellow front number plate, an anniversary emblem and a red stripe running along the top of the fuel tank and the tail.

Since Yamaha made its GP debut in 1961, the company has achieved over 500 Grand Prix race wins with legendary riders including Read, Ivy, Saarinen, Agostini, Roberts, Lawson, Rainey, Lorenzo and Rossi, and more recently Quartararo – and these historic racing colours highlight the connection between Yamaha’s race bikes and every R-Series model.

Honda, Yamaha, KTM, Piaggio Sign Swappable Battery Agreement

Following the signing of the Letter of Intent on March 1, HONDA Motor Co., KTM F&E GmbH, Ltd., PIAGGIO Group (PIA.MI) and YAMAHA Motor Co., Ltd., have officially signed the agreement for the creation of the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC).

Committed to the promotion of the widespread use of light electric vehicles, such as mopeds, scooters, motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles in the transport sector and to the more sustainable life-cycle management of batteries in the context of international climate policies, the founding members of the Consortium believe that the availability of a commonly developed swappable battery systems is key to the development of low-voltage electromobility.

The underlying aim of the Consortium is to find solutions to the concerns customers may have regarding the future of electromobility, such as the range, the charging time and infrastructure, and costs. This will be achieved in accordance with four primary goals:

  1. Develop common technical specifications of the swappable battery systems
  2. Confirm common usage of the battery systems
  3. Make, and promote, the Consortium’s common specifications as a standard within European and International standardization bodies
  4. Expand the use of the Consortium’s common specification to global level

By working closely with interested stakeholders and National, European and International standardization bodies, the founding members of the Consortium will be involved in the creation of international technical standards. Indeed, the availability of charging stations varies between countries and there is still limited information for end users. Therefore, with this Consortium, HONDA, KTM, PIAGGIO and YAMAHA aim at
engaging the decision makers for the development and deployment of charging infrastructure to promote the increase of light electric vehicles.

The four founding members encourage all interested stakeholders to join the cooperation to enrich the Consortium’s expertise in order to ensure a large diffusion of standard swappable batteries in the future. Parties who are interested to join the SBMC can contact one of the founding members for further information.

Yoshishige Nomura, Chief Officer, Motorcycle Operations, Honda Motor Co., Ltd.:  Honda believes that the widespread adoption of electric motorcycles can play an important part in realising a more sustainable society. For that purpose, we need to solve several challenges such as extending the range, shortening the charging time and lowering the vehicle and infrastructure costs to enhance convenience for customers. In the Consortium we have created, the founding members from the motorcycle industry and other stakeholders will work together towards standardizing swappable batteries, their charging systems and surrounding infrastructure to create the environment for their use. Our final goal is to ensure that motorcycles will continue to be chosen as a useful method of transportation in future mobility

Stefan Pierer, CEO PIERER Mobility AG: “The signing of this Consortium agreement is a key step in ensuring that PIERER Mobility AG, can continue to move forward, deliver innovation at pace, and advance its clear strategic vision for electric powered two-wheelers. Together with our partners, we will work to deliver a swappable battery system for low-voltage vehicles (48V) up to 11kW capacity, based on international technical standards. We very much look forward to ensuring that powered two-wheeler vehicles maintain their role in the future of both urban and non-urban mobility

Michele Colaninno, Chief of strategy and product of Piaggio Group: “Urban mobility is going through a delicate moment of transition towards electrification. Thanks to our Consortium, representing four major global players, motorbikes will continue to play a key role in the urban context. Swappable batteries give the right answer to speed up the recharging time of vehicles offering an additional valuable choice for users. Urban mobility is part of the Piaggio DNA and history: our aim is to bring all our technological know-how and attitude for innovation to the Consortium.”

Takuya Kinoshita, Senior Executive Officer, Chief General Manager of Land Mobility Business Operations, Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.: “The Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium in Europe is finally ready to get to work. I hope that this first step forward will be a beacon that draws like-minded parties to our mission and leads to transformative changes for the future. We at Yamaha Motor are confident that through this initiative, we can help unify the differing technical specs and standards and contribute to maximizing the merits of electric power for customers around the world.”

Yamaha Motor introduces flagship PW-X3 Drive Unit

All-new, class-leading model from the industry’s eBike pioneer

As the company that invented the world’s first Electrically Power Assisted Cycle (EPAC) nearly 30 years ago, Yamaha Motor is recognised as one of the world’s leading innovators in eBike technology.

The eBike market is developing at an incredible pace as millions of customers all over the world experience the freedom and enjoyment that this accessible zero-emission transport has to offer. From being a niche market not so long ago, the eBike sector has grown year-on-year at a remarkable rate and is now firmly established as a mainstream business, with many new and established bicycle brands developing a range of outstanding next-generation models that offer reduced weight and increased performance.

PW-X3: Yamaha’s smaller, lightest and most powerful drive unit
Developed specifically for the next generation of European e-MTBs, Yamaha’s all-new PW-X3 drive unit is the company’s smallest, lightest and most powerful drive unit. Producing higher performance with instant power delivery, the ultra-compact PW-X3 drive unit elevates the feeling of rider-machine unity to a whole new level – an experience that Yamaha calls “Pure Ride”.

85 Nm of instant torque
PW-X3’s increased torque output of 85 Nm let’s e-MTB riders tackle steep gradients and sandy or muddy terrain with ease. Just as importantly the PW-X3 ensures instant torque delivery at the slightest pedal input and the strong and seamless flow of power reinforces the feeling that the bike is an extension of the rider’s body.

Yamaha’s lightest drive unit
Yamaha’s PW series models have always been amongst the lightest drive units and weighing just 2.75 kg the PW-X3 is 10% lighter than the previous model – giving an outstanding power to weight ratio for class-leading performance.

Most compact drive unit
As well as being Yamaha’s lightest and most powerful drive unit, the PW-X3 is also 20% smaller than the PW-X2 model. Its more compact size is a significant factor that offers cycle manufacturers greater freedom to develop bikes with ideal frame geometry and suspension kinematics.

Best Q-factor
The PW-X3 drive unit continues to feature the 128 mm ISIS interface bottom bracket axle that gives the best Q-factor of any manufacturer. These dimensions have been used on every PW-X series right from the beginning and this layout is regarded by many riders as the ideal configuration.

Yamaha Interface X

New minimalist LED communication unit

Featuring a stem mount system that gives a clean-looking cockpit and handlebar area, Interface X is a minimalist and simple new LED communication unit designed to complement the PW-X3. A user-friendly remote switch is equipped with ergonomic mode buttons that enable fast and easy selection without the need for the rider to take their eyes off the track ahead, and colour-coded assist mode lights and a battery capacity indicator display easy to absorb information.

Yamaha collaborates with SIGMA, Garmin and Echowell

Yamaha has been working with a number of leading third-party cycle computer manufacturers in order to give customers greater freedom of choice when personalising their e-MTB. Featuring ANT+™ connectivity, Interface X offers full compatibility with third-party cycle computers, e.g. SIGMA, Garmin and Echowell.

SIGMA

As the cycle industry’s leading innovators – Yamaha having invented the first eBike and SIGMA SPORT invented the first digital bike computer with the Cyclecoach – the two companies share the same strong pioneering spirit. It was a natural progression for these major brands to work together to ensure customised compatibility between Yamaha’s Interface X and SIGMA’s EOX VIEW 1300 for a unique customer experience.

Garmin

Garmin is recognised as the world’s leading manufacturer of innovative GPS systems and the company’s ANT+ wireless technology enables interoperability between multiple monitoring devices. Garmin’s Edge® 530, Edge 830, Edge 1030, Edge 1030 Plus and Edge Explore cycling computers are compatible with Interface X and support three profiles that provide a wide range of information to the e-MTB rider.

Echowell

Echowell is based in Taiwan and supplies millions of cycle computers each year to customers all over the world. The company’s LEV100 eBike computer is designed to work with Interface X and can be set up to provide a wealth of information that keeps the rider informed.

Yamaha External Crossover Battery 400

Easy to access external battery
Yamaha’s External Crossover Battery line-up is strengthened with the addition of a new and lighter new External Crossover Battery 400, which offers a number of advantages to urban riders, commuters and hire bike operators.

The external design makes it easy to access and remove with a key, making it ideal for situations where there’s no power supply in the garage or bike park. A carry handle makes the 2.8-kg unit easy to take to the nearest charging point, and the Lithium-ion 410 Wh battery can be charged in approximately three and a half hours

Total support for the European eBike industry

The launch of the new PW-X3 drive unit reinforces Yamaha’s ongoing commitment to European e-MTB manufacturers who are developing the next generation of lighter and stronger models. As the inventor of the original eBike concept, Yamaha has build up plenty of experience in this field, and the new drive unit – along with Interface X and the External Crossover Battery 400 – confirms the company’s total support for all OEM partners as well as new customers requiring premium eBike systems.

The nature of the Supersport world is changing, and while the more extreme models continue to attract a devoted following of performance-focused riders, Yamaha is further expanding its segment-leading supersport range with the launch of the new R7 that will introduce a new generation of riders to R/World.

Yamaha R7: Respecting the legend
No motorcycle would ever dare to compare itself to the original YZF-R7. Only 500 of these full factory race bikes were produced in 1999 to gain homologation for World Superbike and Suzuka 8 Hours. Raced by legendary riders including Noriyuki Haga and Akira Yanagawa, the YZF-R7 is considered to be one of the most exotic and desirable Japanese motorcycles ever built.

The new R7 has been named in order to show respect for the original limited edition YZF-R7 superbike. Proudly carrying this illustrious name, the 2021 R7 is a new kind of Supersport that has been created to appeal to a younger audience, and is built to introduce the next generation of riders to the thrills, excitement and pride of ownership that comes with every R-Series.

New Yamaha R7: Adding a new dimension to R/World
While there is always going to be a place for the legendary R1M, R1 and R6 RACE, the arrival of the new R7 makes R/World a reality for many younger riders who yearn for the Supersport lifestyle.

Powered by Yamaha’s outstandingly successful and much-loved CP2 engine that is famous for its strong and linear torque delivery – as well as its reliability and low running costs – the new R7 is ready to shake up the middleweight market. Clothed in exquisitely crafted bodywork and featuring an extremely high specification that includes radial-mount front brakes, inverted forks and an A&S clutch, the R7 is a new kind of motorcycle that offers exciting Supersport performance with outstanding handling and aggressive R-Series style – and all of this at a highly competitive price.

Light, compact and agile, this stunning looking machine is designed to give its rider the highest degree of control and the biggest fun factor in its class – whether they’re riding on the track or on the street. This Supersport really is within the grasp of every rider who wants to be a part of R/World. R7 is a new reality, and it’s ready to attract a new audience and have a significant impact on the Supersport world.

689cc CP2 engine: Sports performance with everyday fun
With its clear focus on pure riding excitement, accessibility and affordability, the new R7 represents an exciting new dimension to the R-Series Supersport family. Regarded as one of the most characterful, responsive and reliable designs in its class, Yamaha’s successful 689cc CP2 engine is the perfect powerplant for this new model.

Featuring a 270 degree crankshaft that gives an uneven firing sequence, the 4-stroke inline 2-cylinder DOHC 4-valve liquid-cooled CP2 engine delivers strong and linear torque across a wide rpm range, making it a lively performer in all gears and at all engine speeds. Maximum power of 73.4PS (54kW) is produced at 8,750 rpm, and more significantly the maximum torque of 67 Nm is achieved at 6,500 rpm, giving the R7 extremely strong standing start and roll-on acceleration – while the uneven pulses of the 270 degree crankshaft create a very real feeling of mounting excitement as the revs rise.

Dedicated changes to the existing CP2 engine include a new ECU specification and optimised air intake ducts, as well as a revised exhaust design and idealised fuel injection settings. These measures work to enhance controllability and deliver a smooth and responsive throttle response, contributing to the enjoyable torque-rich riding experience of the R7 – while also achieving full EU5 compliance. In addition to these dedicated modifications, the R7 also runs a slightly reduced secondary gear reduction ratio to give a sportier character with stronger acceleration.

A&S clutch: Ultimate controllability
A key new feature on the R7’s CP2 engine is the adoption of an Assist & Slipper (A&S) clutch that delivers smoother gear shifting and prevents engine over-rev and rear wheel hop during hard braking, resulting in more predictable and controllable handling when approaching corners.

Another advantage of the R7’s A&S clutch is that it provides a significantly lighter feel at the lever, approximately 33 per cent less than a standard clutch.

Optional Quick Shift System: Seamless upshifts for full-on acceleration
R7 riders can choose to have an optional Quick Shift System (QSS) fitted to their new Supersport by the supplying Yamaha dealer. This simple but effective QSS features a switch positioned on the gear shift rod, and when any upshifting movement is detected the ECU instantaneously cuts power to the transmission for a few milliseconds, allowing for faster and smoother full throttle upshifts for even more exhilarating acceleration.

Slim and lightweight frame: Ultra-responsive handling with agile cornering
Slimness and compactness are two of the defining characteristics of the R7, and this new Supersport features a lightweight backbone style frame that is designed to deliver responsive and agile handling together with fast and nimble directional changes.

A rigid mounted aluminium centre brace contributes towards the bike’s sharp handling performance on the track and road, and the high tensile steel frame uses tubing of varying strengths in key locations in order to achieve an idealised rigidity balance.

Fully adjustable 41 mm inverted forks: Easily set up for track or road
A great deal of attention has been paid to the design of the R7’s new suspension package in order to achieve accurate front end feel during cornering and braking. The new KYB 41 mm inverted front forks provide a high level of stability together with confident roadholding on racetracks and twisty roads. And to ensure a firm and predictable front end feel, a gravity cast upper triple clamp and forged aluminium lower triple clamp are featured.

The R7 can be set up by the rider to suit different conditions, and these Supersport class forks are fully adjustable for preload as well as compression and rebound damping. With the compression function located in the left fork leg and the rebound function in the right leg, adjustments are quick and easy to make.

For precise handling with accurate feedback the R7’s high specification inverted forks give a steep caster angle of 23.7 degrees with 90 mm trail, and with a compact 1,395 mm wheelbase and a 51/49 front/rear wheel weight distribution, this new Supersport is built to corner hard and fast.

Newly designed link-type Monocross rear suspension
The R7 adopts a redesigned link-type Monocross rear suspension system with damping characteristics and a spring rate, that are designed to suit the sporty character of the bike. Being horizontally mounted, the shock contributes towards mass centralisation that enhances handling agility – and is easily adjustable for preload and rebound damping, enabling the R7 chassis to be quickly set up for track or street use.

Supersport riding position: Clip-ons, rearsets and solo-style rider’s seat
The R7’s sporty riding position is the result of many hours of test riding by factory riders, and the use of clip-ons confirms the bike’s genuine Supersport DNA. After experimenting with a wide variety of bar/seat/footrest configurations, the final result is designed to give a sporty yet adaptable riding position that allows plenty of freedom of body position to master different riding situations – especially race tracks and twisty roads.

An important feature is the seat design which is narrow around the rider’s inner thighs and wider at the rear, allowing maximum freedom of movement. The back sweep and drop angle of the clip-on handlebars and the positioning of the rear sets have been carefully considered in order to realise a tucked-in riding position that enables the rider to achieve optimum control together with the greatest possible aerodynamic efficiency. The ability to tuck tightly into the machine is enhanced by the deeply indented tank cover, and these knee pockets also enable the rider to grip the bike during braking and cornering.

The solo-style seat features a bump-stop design with a passenger pad on top of the tail, and the optional Yamaha Genuine Accessories seat cowl can be easily fitted to the R7 for riders who only go solo.

Radial mount calipers and radial master cylinder: High performance with fingertip control
The R7’s genuine R-Series credentials can be seen in the high specification front braking system, featuring radial-mount 4-piston brake calipers that give accurate and uniform stopping power for the ultimate in fingertip control. This advanced front braking system also includes a Brembo radial master cylinder that delivers linear brake pressure for enhanced controllability.

Ultra-athletic dimensions: The search for perfect control
What makes the R7 such an attractive Supersport for a wide range of customers is the fact that it is designed to enable its rider to achieve a high level of control in many different situations. A key element that makes the R7 owner feel truly at one with their machine is its compact and athletic outline that allows the rider to be in charge of the machine, rather than the machine dominating the rider.

With a wet weight of just 188 kg and compact proportions, it means that the bike is highly accessible and riders can become an integral part of this new generation Supersport. Along with its mass centralised design, low frontal area and small moment of inertia, the compactness gives the R7 rider a feeling of total control that helps to elevate their riding and confidence to another level, while at the same time boosting the enjoyment of a trackday experience, weekend ride or daily commute.

Super-slim R-Series bodywork: Reduced air resistance for optimal performance
The key to pushing any Supersport bike through the air most effectively is to keep its frontal area as small as possible, and this is where the R7 has a strong advantage. Its compact CP2 engine is one of the narrowest in the 700cc class, and the minimalist tubular chassis keeps overall dimensions to a minimum. These factors have enabled Yamaha to create the slimmest ever R-Series – that’s even narrower than the R3 and R125 – making the R7 one of the most aerodynamically efficient bikes with a rider on board.

The incredibly small frontal area not only makes the R7 one of the most stunning looking supersport models, but it also pays dividends in terms of performance. Producing the same maximum power as any other CP2-powered Yamaha, the aerodynamic new R7 is capable of achieving a significantly higher top speed.

Evolving R-Series face: Pure and aggressive as ever
With its aggressive twin-eye glare and YZR-M1 MotoGP™ bike style M-shaped air intake, there can be no doubt in anyone’s mind that the R7 is a fully paid-up member of the R-Series family. The R7 represents the evolution of the R-Series face, and features a single LED headlight recessed within the iconic M-shaped air duct, while LED position lights are located within the twin-eye face – and there’s a new air deflector located at the base of the intake.

Newly designed full LCD instruments
The compact Supersport cockpit features newly designed lightweight LCD instruments with a high-contrast negative mode display that gives clear and easy to absorb information, allowing the R7 rider to focus on the road ahead. Features include gear indicator as well as a shift indicator light, and a QSS indicator when this optional feature is used.

Lightweight 10-spoke alloy wheels
For easy manoeuvrability together with agile handling and responsive suspension action the R7 is equipped with lightweight 10-spoke cast alloy wheels. A high level of traction is provided by a 120/70ZR17 front tyre and a wide 180/55ZR17 rear tyre that deliver stable and confident roadholding when cornering, accelerating and braking.

Yamaha sharpens up the winning Off Road Competition Range for 2021

New YZ250F aiming for the podium – while special Monster Energy® Yamaha Racing Editions for YZ250F and YZ450F offer genuine factory team style.

In the company’s 65th anniversary year the commitment to winning is as strong as it ever has been, with Yamaha riders powering to remarkable results across the world. 2020 got off to an outstanding start, with Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing rider Dylan Ferrandis defending his crown and scoring a back-to-back 250SX West Coast Championship title on his YZ250F a cross the Atlantic. And Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Jago Geerts winning his first Grand Prix at the opening round of the FIM MX2 World Championship series.

The philosophy that racing should play a key role in the company’s operations started back in July 1955 when Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd was founded. Yamaha won its first race first time out, and on this day the company’s future direction was chosen. And still today, at every level within Yamaha, racing is deeply embedded within the company’s DNA – and the 2021 motocross range demonstrates that Yamaha continues to do whatever it takes to give every competitor the very real opportunity to fulfil their genuine potential.

With the strong range of high-performance 4-stroke and 2-stroke race bikes – as well as some of the world’s favourite kids’ dirt bikes – Yamaha is ready to welcome everybody to the victorYZone.

2021 YZ250F

New YZ250F: Tune. Race. Win.
The YZ250F has already made a big name for itself as one of the most competitive 250 4-strokes out there. At every level this outstanding motocross bike has proved that it has what it takes to win in all conditions, in MX and SX. For the 2021 model year Yamaha is aiming even higher with the launch of the new YZ250F – equipped with thoroughly refined engine, revised frame, new suspension settings, new brakes and advanced digital technologies in this ultra-competitive class.

Completely redesigned engine
Every major component has been redesigned and improved in order to give Yamaha riders a genuine advantage on the racetrack. With its industry-leading reverse cylinder head design that delivers enhanced intake efficiency and improved mass centralisation, the 250cc 4-valve powerplant is already in a class of its own.

For the 2021 model year Yamaha’s engineers have analysed each and every key component and made a large number of significant changes that are designed to give a wider band of stronger and smoother race-winning performance – as well as an enhanced transmission for slicker shifting.

New exhaust camshaft profile
The 2021 engine’s power feeling from the mid rpm range through to over-rev performance has been refined and improved by the use of a new exhaust camshaft with a revised profile that reduces valve overlap. Together with optimized fuel injection settings, this new camshaft improves the YZ250F’s engine character above mid rpm, giving a higher level of performance together with greater controllability.

All-new high-efficiency intake system
The YZ250F’s front-facing inlet is a key feature that gives this lightweight 4-stroke a very real advantage. As well as ensuring the delivery of cool and fresh air directly into the engine for increased combustion efficiency and instant throttle response, it also facilitates the use of a unique rearwards-inclined cylinder that achieves excellent mass centralisation which contributes towards the bike’s easy agility and lightweight handling.

The intake system on the 2021 model is all new, and the redesigned airbox does away with the intake funnel and has been shortened by 20mm to give a smoother and more direct route for the incoming air. Another key change is the use of a new air cleaner box cover mounted at the front of the seat. Featuring new ducts, the 2021 cover increases the volume of intake air to deliver even stronger performance at high rpm.

New high-performance muffler
To complement the increased high rpm performance of the 2021 engine, a new muffler with an increased capacity is fitted. Just 70mm longer than the previous design, the new system is constructed to give smoother acceleration especially at high rpm, and delivers a deep and subdued exhaust note that emphasises the torque-rich nature of this 250cc 4-stroke engine.

Stronger clutch housing and smooth-shifting transmissionficon blue
To complement the new engine’s increased performance the clutch housing has been redesigned. The clutch basket features thicker walls that are significantly stronger, giving increased durability and consistently strong performance throughout the race.

3rd, 4th and 5th gears on both the input and output shafts have been redesigned to give improved transmission performance, and selected gears are shot peened to give greater strength to match the increased engine performance.

Refined bilateral beam frame takes handling to a new level
The YZ250F is already renowned for its super-agile and lightweight handling – and ongoing evaluation and testing have enabled Yamaha’s designers to refine the frame structure and take chassis performance to the next level.

The 2021 YZ250F is equipped with a new aluminium bilateral beam frame that – while outwardly similar to the previous design – features a number of significant changes that match the increased performance of the 2021 engine and make a tangible improvement to handling feel and performance. By fine-tuning the frame’s rigidity levels at key locations, Yamaha’s designers have been able to create a chassis that achieves lightweight handling together with a precise and confident feel. Other chassis components such as the top triple clamp, handlebar mounts, and front axle were also redesigned to complement the new frame – all contributing to the 2021 model’s increased competitiveness.

Revised front and rear suspension settings give greater control
Yamaha’s motocross models are widely regarded as having one of the best suspension packages in the industry. At the front end the KYB® inverted coil spring-type forks feature speed sensitive damping to give outstanding handling performance, while at the rear end the KYB® shock and link-type Monocross system work together to deliver optimum control together with high levels of rear wheel traction.

To ensure it maintains its position as one of the very best motocross suspension systems ‘straight from the factory’, the 2021 package is further refined. The settings on the KYB® front forks are revised to give more progressive damping throughout the entire stroke, and this gives the rider a stronger feeling of contact with the track surface while also delivering better bump absorption that helps conserve rider energy. At the rear the KYB® shock runs with revised settings that give a more stable ride with a reduced tendency to pitch.

These important suspension improvements – combined with the refined rigidity balance of the bilateral beam frame – elevate the 2021 YZ250F’s handling qualities to an even higher level. As well as being lighter handling, the new model gives a more precise feeling that enables the rider to hold their chosen line for faster cornering. Front wheel and rear wheel traction is also improved by these chassis changes, giving greater levels of machine control for a real advantage over the opposition.

Lighter and more powerful braking system
Braking performance is increased and braking system weight is reduced for 2021. The redesigned front caliper is 30% more rigid than previously and uses larger diameter pistons and newly designed brake pads – while a new 270mm front disc achieves a 16% increase in pad contact surface area without any increase in weight. The rear brake caliper design is also new, and together with a new 240mm rear disc this system maintains the same level of braking power while weighing 120g less.

Delivering improved braking performance and better feeling, the new braking system makes an important contribution to the 2021 YZ250F’s increased competitiveness and enhanced ride quality.

YZ250F action

Revised handlebar position
In order to achieve the optimal riding position for enhanced controllability, the handlebars on the 2021 YZ250F are mounted further forward, enabling the rider to load the front end and shift their body weight over the front wheel as and when required.

New handlebar clamps are mounted to a new lighter top triple clamp, and both units feature a revised rigidity balance for reduced stress on the rider’s arms. The new chromoly steel footrests are also lighter, as is the new front axle shaft, enabling the Yamaha YZ250F to weigh in at just 106kg with a full 6.2 litre fuel tank and 0.95 litres of engine oil – just 3kg more than the YZ250 2-stroke.

Dynamic new Icon Blue bodywork with coordinated number plates
Yamaha Racing has made blue its very own, and for an even sharper and more dynamic look the 2021 YZ250F is equipped with new Icon Blue bodywork featuring colour coordinated front and side number plates. Also equipped with blue rims, cylinder head and other engine details, the 2021 model presents a more forceful and sleek appearance that is unmistakeably Yamaha DNA.

Yamaha Power Tuner
The industry-leading Power Tuner is an easy to use digital technology that enables YZ250F – as well as YZ450F – riders to fine-tune the bike’s engine power character at the trackside using their smartphone. Riders and mechanics can simply download the free Power Tuner App for IOS or Android devices, and then instantly connect with the YZ250F to make adjustments to fuel injection and ignition timing via the bike’s CCU. In the Power Tuner app riders can create their own settings, and using the handlebar mounted button they can switch between two of the maps.

Besides being able to make changes to the engine’s performance, the Power Tuner can also be used to record race log information and monitor a range of data, including system diagnostics, run time and maintenance – as well as comparing and sharing race logs and settings with fellow riders.

Yamaha and RCS Sport Announce Mobility Initiative

Yamaha and RCS Sport Announce Mobility Initiative in Support of COVID-19 Containment Measures.

Last Saturday 9th May the Yamaha NIKEN motorcycle fleet provided by Yamaha Motor Europe to support cycling’s three Grand Tours was due to take to the roads for the start of the 103rd edition of the Giro d’Italia, which was scheduled to get underway with the Grande Partenza in Budapest, Hungary.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic all three Grand Tours, the Giro d’Italia, the Tour de France and La Vuelta, have been postponed until later in the year but Yamaha’s NIKEN fleet will not stand idle over the summer months.

Working in close cooperation with RCS Sport, Yamaha has arranged to supply for the coming months the NIKEN vehicle fleet, which was provided to support the Giro d’Italia in 2020, to medical staff and other essential workers in Italy to assist in the fight against COVID-19.

The revolutionary three-wheeled machine is the perfect mobility solution for essential workers, as it minimizes personal contact and reduces the risk of COVID-19 transmission, while allowing for improved transfer times between medical facilities in an urban environment.

The NIKEN fleet will be released to the Red Cross in Italy, with the international humanitarian organisation identifying which areas of their ongoing operations in support of combatting COVID-19 would benefit the most. The NIKEN bikes will also be used by essential workers delivering care services, as well as home deliveries for those who require support.

The NIKEN fleet is being made available as Italy makes the transition from lockdown to more normal life and will be a key component in the efforts to contain the virus in a country that has suffered greatly these past months.

Paolo Pavesio, Director Marketing and Motorsports:
“Mobility will be key as countries make the transition from lockdown to normality, especially for humanitarian organisations like the Red Cross, who continue to play a vital role in supporting medical services across Europe. The NIKEN fleet with which Yamaha normally provides support to cycling’s main events in Europe is the ideal mobility solution for the Red Cross, providing a form of transport that will allow staff to deliver medical support, medicines or food to those who need it, whilst minimising contact during these essential journeys. I would like to thank RCS Sport for their assistance with providing this service to the Italian Red Cross.”

Yamaha to Restart Production at Facilities in Italy and France

Yamaha to Restart Production at Facilities in Italy and France as Coronavirus Restrictions Eased.

Yamaha Motor Europe today announced that final product manufacturing will resume at the Motori Minarelli engine factory in Calderara di Reno, Italy and the MBK Industrie assembly plant in Saint Quentin, France on Monday 4th May.

Production at both facilities was temporarily suspended March 16th to ensure the safety of the workforce, prior to the mandatory lockdown eventually imposed in both countries to combat the spread of coronavirus.

The situation has been monitored closely in the intervening period, with the factory closures assessed on a weekly basis.

Resumption of production has been a two-phase process, with phase one taking place in April. In strict accordance with the restrictions in each country, this initial phase saw a return to work only by those allowed to do so and able to practice social distancing in their role, together with a program to introduce Covid-19 safety measures within the main working environments and to prepare the factory for full re-opening and the recommencement of priority operations.

Phase two will commence on May 4th with a progressive return to final product manufacturing operations at both facilities, where working practices will be adapted to safeguard the health and wellbeing of the workforce, which remains the priority for Yamaha Motor Europe.

Eric de Seynes, Yamaha Motor Europe President and CEO:

“The reopening of both motorcycle, scooters and engines production plants we have in Europe is a positive news within a very complicated period we are experiencing. It has been possible thanks to the cooperation with all parties involved, which I sincerely want to thank, and will happen securing all the safety standard for our employees. It also represents a key milestone to support with new products our dealer network which during the coming weeks will restart operations in all the countries involved in the lockdown as Italy (May 4 ), France and th Spain (May 11th).”

Sport Touring: Travelling through the Roads of Life

“It is the journey and not the arrival that matters.” A famous quotation that perfectly sums up the universal attraction of sport touring motorcycles to different generations of riders. Travel can broaden the mind and enrich the soul – and it also enables each person to live in the moment and fully appreciate the world and the people around them.

More than anything, riding a sport touring motorcycle focuses the mind on the now, and stimulates the senses with new sights, sounds and smells. The rider becomes an integral part of the environment. It’s as if they’ve gone from living in monochrome to full colour HD.

This is represented in “Roads of Life” – the core concept of Yamaha’s Sport Touring segment and the philosophy around which the segment’s models are built. It is about a strong emotional experience through riding, the feeling of togetherness and the desire to share unique moments. Yamaha’s Sport Touring models are the perfect means to reach the emotional state one searches for, the perfect partner for those who wish to share a journey. It’s all about the twists and turns – be it on a winding road or in life.

2020 Yamaha Sport Touring Range

For 2020 Yamaha offers one of the strongest and most attractive line-ups in the sport touring segment, with a wide range of unique and distinctive models like FJR, NIKEN and Tracer, from 1300cc through to 700cc.

Every Yamaha Sport Touring motorcycle has the potential to take its rider and passenger on a new journey every day. Anything is possible, the only limit is the rider’s imagination. Riding through a twisting mountain road together, heading south to the Mediterranean or taking a fast Sunday morning ride with a group of riding buddies, these are the very special memories that will never be forgotten.

The Sport Touring segment delivers a full range of riding emotions – from everyday trips to long distance travel, from easy thrills to dynamic performance, from adrenaline to comfortable touring. Yamaha is always working hard to give everybody the opportunity to begin a new journey and discover their very own Roads of Life.

New Tracer 700: It’s Your Turn

This is the bike for riders who want thrilling sports performance with all round versatility and a serious bit of attitude. Featuring completely new bodywork and an aggressive new face, the new Tracer 700 is the kind of machine that really can go almost anywhere whether near or far, in the city or on the open road.

Coming from a family of Yamaha sport touring bikes that are widely respected and admired for their outstanding sports performance and the ability to excel in every situation, the new Tracer 700 is built to exceed expectations in every respect.

Driven by the first Euro5 version of the acclaimed 689cc, 2-cylinder CP2 engine, the 2020 model takes the sport tourer concept to another level. Featuring a dynamic new look and offering the best-in-class power to weight ratio – together with enhanced ergonomics and a higher overall specification – the Tracer 700 is designed to thrill.

It’s a genuine 7-days a week bike that loves to play hard and fast at weekends. Tearing through the curves the Tracer 700 gets the heartbeat revving and the adrenaline pumping. Then when it’s time to be sensible again on Monday morning this adaptable sport tourer is equipped to handle long-distance commuting and urban riding.

New half fairing with aggressive new twin headlight face

Featuring twin slant-eye LED position lights and powerful twin LED projector headlights, the Tracer 700 comes with a modern and aggressive new look that has a whole lot more attitude than any other bike in the class.

The compact and lightweight layered fairing emphasises the dynamic stance of this new sport tourer to give it a much more edgy and predatory feel. Blending seamlessly into the fuel tank cover, this compact and aerodynamic fairing offers plenty of wind and weather protection for improved long-distance comfort. The newly designed front fender follows this new design direction to reinforce the bike’s formidable new style.

Finished in a choice of bold new colour schemes, this next generation bodywork and unforgettable face gives an impression of lightness and agility that reflect the true character of the dynamic new Tracer 700.

Thrilling torque-rich 689cc, CP2 engine

The new Tracer 700 is powered by Yamaha’s formidable 689cc, 2-cylinder crossplane concept engine, one of the most successful and best-loved powerplants that the company has ever produced. What makes this engine so special is its 270º crank that gives an uneven firing sequence, enabling the engine to deliver strong linear torque that responds directly to the rider’s throttle input.

For 2020 this outstanding engine is updated with optimised fuel injection and ignition settings, revised air intake, optimised exhaust settings and a modified exhaust system that enable this ultra-reliable powerplant to exceed EU5 standards.

Delivering maximum power at 8750rpm with maximum torque at 6500rpm, the Tracer 700’s engine gives the most thrilling, sporty and emotional riding experience. The wide band of linear torque ensures strong acceleration through the rpm band, and with a revised secondary gear ratio the 2020 model is even more exciting and responsive when charging through the 6-speed transmission. It only takes one ride with this engine to see just why it’s Europe’s favourite powerplant.

This version of the CP2 engine is now fully compliant with the new Euro5 regulations without losing its unique, well known and much appreciated character.

Lightest in class, best power to weight ratio

Featuring a lightweight tubular frame and equipped with a long aluminium swingarm that gives a 1,460mm wheelbase, the Tracer 700’s compact chassis make this one of the most agile and exciting sport tourers. With the lowest wet weight in the class of just 196kg combined with its thrilling torque-rich engine and strong power output, the Tracer 700 achieves the best power to weight ratio to give a truly outstanding riding experience.

Adjustable front and rear suspension

To allow the Tracer 700 owner to explore the full potential of the bike’s handling performance and enjoy every ride to the full, the new model is equipped with uprated 41mm cartridge-type front forks. The spring rate has been adjusted in order to optimise the roadholding characteristics, and the 2020 model is equipped with preload and rebound damping adjusters. Together with the preload and rebound-adjustable rear shock, the bike is easy to set up to suit different rider weights and riding conditions and achieve the best balance of comfort and control.

Aerodynamic screen with single-handed adjustment

The 2020 Tracer 700 is fitted with a slim new aerodynamic screen with a higher optical quality that complements the aggressive new face and lightweight fairing. Using just one hand, screen height can be adjusted by over 60mm to reduce wind buffeting for improved comfort at higher speeds – and redesigned handguards give added wind and weather protection that is sure to be appreciated on longer journeys.

Commanding riding position with comfortable ergonomics

The Tracer 700 is a well-equipped sport tourer that is built to go the full distance, and in order to give a more commanding riding position that complements the new fairing the new model features 34mm wider handlebars with an accessory bridge. Together with the new seat design, the new handlebar enhances the ergonomics to give improved long-distance comfort and controllability.

Contoured dual seat for rider and passenger comfort

Solo or two-up, the new single-piece seat offers increased comfort for the rider and passenger and offers greater freedom in choosing the right riding position. The front section blends smoothly with the tank and fairing to allow a firm knee grip, and the contoured profile gives added support to the rider during acceleration.

For 2020 the rear of the seat is slightly higher, and this gives a more comfortable riding position for the passenger. The new seat also features stitch-type detailing that adds a touch of style.

Long range autonomy

One of the main strengths of the Tracer 700 is its outstanding versatility that confirms its status as a genuine all-rounder that’s capable of handling everything from long-distance trips through to weekend blasts and daily rides to work. The impressive economy of the 689cc, CP2 engine means that the 17-litre fuel tank delivers a long range between stops, enabling the Tracer 700 rider to go all the way.

Negative LCD instruments

One of the many new features on the Tracer 700 is the negative LCD instrument panel that features a clearly marked multi-function display. Spot colour is used on the rev counter and large gear position indicator – and the rider can easily adjust the display using a remote switch on the left handlebar.

Compact and lightweight LED flashers

Compact and lightweight LED flashers are fitted, and at the front they are incorporated into the new handguards to give a lightweight, agile and modern look that’s perfectly in keeping with the new Tracer 700’s dynamic character.

New more powerful larger capacity 560cc engine

For 2020 the new TMAX gets a major boost in performance with the fitment of a more powerful larger-capacity 560cc, 2-cylinder engine that is equipped with new lightweight aluminium forged pistons and newly-designed con rods. The increase in cubic capacity has been achieved by expanding the bore dimensions by 2 mm to 70 mm – and despite its 6% increase in cc, the new engine’s reciprocating parts weigh just 1% more than previously.

Stronger acceleration
The new 560cc engine’s output figures show a significant increase in power and torque across the rpm range, giving much stronger performance and a sportier character. Yamaha’s engineers have increased the maximum power by 3.5% and maximum torque by 6%, and these figures translate into much stronger acceleration across the rev range.

Improved ground access for passenger
Passenger comfort and convenience is a top priority, and for 2020 Yamaha’s designers have made a number of significant improvements to this area. The newly designed tail section is slimmer, giving improved ergonomics for the passenger and making it easier when getting on and off the TMAX. The redesigned rear section and new body panels also give better access to the footrests, to ensure that the pillion experiences a more relaxed and enjoyable ride.

Good eco performance
For good eco-performance the new EU5-compliant engine features a reshaped combustion chamber – while the intake and exhaust valve timing has been revised and larger 27-mm inlet valves are fitted. A new 12-hole injector is relocated to a position on the underside of the inlet tract and it now injects the fuel droplets directly onto the back of the intake valve for improved combustion efficiency. For reduced emissions the 2-into-1 upswept exhaust system is equipped with front and rear catalytic converters that use both platinum and rhodium elements.

Enhanced ride quality
A key feature that contributes towards enhancing the overall ride quality is the new CVT belt that offers an increased transmission capacity. The overall reduction ratio and automatic shifting characteristics have also been changed to give the equivalent of higher gearing at a given rpm, and this ensures a smoother and more relaxed feeling in the typical cruising speed range. The revised gearing also contributes towards the new model’s increased acceleration.

Refined exhaust sound
Engine sound plays an important role in shaping the overall riding experience, and for 2020 the intake and exhaust systems have been further refined in order to hit the right note. With its 360-degree firing interval the TMAX is already renowned for its crisp and pure sound, and by using Yamaha’s signature Kanno Hyoka – actual human sensory testing – the sound from the new engine has been fine-tuned to achieve a more enjoyable and harmonised tone.

Lightest, smoothest and most compact in class
Featuring a 360-degree crank with a horizontally-opposed reciprocating piston balancer mechanism located between the two cylinders, the TMAX engine is one of the lightest, smoothest and most compact in the maxi scooter class. This low-vibration design is used as a fully-stressed member of the frame in order to achieve a stiffer and sportier chassis – and its small physical size frees up more space for added storage capacity.

This innovative engine’s compact and flat layout also ensures a low centre of gravity that contributes significantly towards the TMAX’s light and agile handling character. In every respect it’s the ultimate design with a record that speaks for itself.

2-level D-MODE
Yamaha D-MODE electronic control technology allows the TMAX rider to instantly adjust engine-running modes to optimise control and performance in different situations. This 2-level system operates in association with the YCC-T (Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle) and gives the rider the option to switch to an easier and gentler power delivery for town riding. By selecting the sportier mode, riders can experience the outstanding performance delivered by the new larger capacity 560cc engine for thrilling acceleration on open roads.

Smart Key keyless ignition
Yamaha’s ‘Smart Key’ keyless system allows TMAX riders to start the engine, unlock the seat and other compartments, and also lock or release the main stand as long as they’re carrying the Smart Key.

Optimised suspension settings
The TMAX was one of the first scooters to adopt a motorcycle-type chassis design in which the engine and suspension functions were completely separated. By mounting the engine rigidly in the frame as a stressed member, Yamaha’s designers created the first genuine sport scooter that offered motorcycle-type handling qualities – and this successful design continues to this day.

To match the increased engine performance the new TMAX benefits from optimised front and rear suspension settings that focus on achieving light and agile handling together with excellent comfort, strong traction and a confident, planted feeling.

The new TMAX is equipped with the most sophisticated suspension in the sport scooter class, and features 41-mm upside down front forks with a premium black finish. These full-length motorcycle-type forks deliver sure-footed roadholding with precise steering, giving outstanding performance and comfort both in and out of the city. The rear end is one of the most impressive in the class and consists of a link-type Monocross rear suspension system that, in terms of design and performance, can be compared with some of the advanced systems fitted to Yamaha’s large capacity motorcycles.

With the lightweight aluminium twin-spar die-cast frame, this class-leading configuration gives excellent levels of chassis rigidity for precise and agile motorcycle-type handling performance.

Slimmer and sportier body design
The process of evolution is evident in the new body design of the new TMAX which, while remaining true to the iconic family look, also displays a range of significant new features and details that give it a more aggressive presence and a sportier character.

Whilst being constantly developed and enhanced over 20 years with sophisticated new engine and chassis technology, the original TMAX DNA is still present, and this strong family identity is one of the key attractions for new and repeat customers.

Virtually every main body panel except the fairing and under cowl have undergone subtle yet significant changes for 2020. Yamaha’s designers have respected the scooter’s original proportions that project a sharp directional attitude towards the road, and at the same time have achieved a more agile look.

The signature ‘boomerang’ side cover has been a key element of every TMAX produced since the beginning, and for 2020 its design is further refined – while the new front panels complement the reshaped boomerang and the sharper and slimmer side covers to give the 2020 model a more forceful attitude that reflects its iconic status.

New LED flashers and dynamic new tail with ‘T’ shaped light
A key design feature that contributes significantly towards this class-leading sport scooter’s more dynamic looks are the compact new LED front flashers that are fully integrated into the restyled panels. Blending seamlessly with the new body, the lightweight LED flashers ensure a much sleeker, sportier and more agile look – and draw attention to the contemporary design of this constantly evolving model.

The beautifully restyled body is complemented by an all-new rear that consists of many new design elements inspired by Yamaha’s Hyper Naked and Supersport bikes. The focal point is a completely new ‘T’ shaped LED rear light that gives the 7th generation model a unique signature style that transforms the whole look of the TMAX when viewed from behind. The new side covers accentuate the more edgy styling and convey a feeling of lightness and athleticism, and the new slimmer rear end projects a sporty and more agile appearance that reflects the higher specification and increased performance of the new 2020 model.

Large storage space
The TMAX is equipped with a large illuminated underseat storage space that can accommodate 1 x full-face or 2 x jet helmets. The lockable and weatherproof compartment is also ideal for carrying a briefcase or other personal items.

Monotone TFT instruments
Monotone TFT instruments feature a speedometer on the left side with a tachometer on the right, and the central display includes an odometer, two tripmeters, current fuel consumption and outside temperature. TCS and D-MODE indicator lights are also featured.

Centre stand locking system
For added safety and security the TMAX is equipped with a centre stand locking system. This prevents the centre stand being flipped up without the Smart Key, helping to deter thieves and also helps the parked vehicle to remain stable even if accidentally pushed forward.

Detail changes for 2020
Other detail engine improvements for 2020 include a revised cooling system and larger capacity radiator with newly designed air ducts, as well as a new low-noise plastic resin chain tensioner. The Traction Control System (TCS) has been fine-tuned for an improved feeling when it engages, and a new high-strength exhaust pipe material than permits the use of 20% thinner walls.

New MT-125: Step into the Dark Side

When Yamaha launched the revolutionary MT-09 in 2013, a whole new world was created along with it. The MT craze has taken Europe by storm and fired the imagination of thousands of riders who are looking for a different kind of motorcycle and a distinct way to express themselves. With their signature Japanese heritage and unique style, Yamaha’s Hyper Naked bikes are the natural choice of those unconventional riders who want to show real attitude.

Delivering thrilling performance, agility and aggressive looks, the MT models represent the spirit of the Dark Side of Japan and enable everyone to feel the adrenaline rush that a true Master of Torque guarantees.

Hyper Naked and the MT range
Ever since its launch the MT range has delivered on its objective, becoming one of the most successful line-ups ever produced by Yamaha with almost a quarter of a million units in Europe alone.

Today’s Hyper Naked segment includes models from 125cc through to 1000cc and offers every rider the opportunity to step up in experience and performance. Those looking for something more niche and high spec can choose among the sportier SP models, or long-distance runners like the MT-10 Tourer Edition.

The Yamaha Hyper Naked segment is constantly evolving with new styling, state-of-the-art technology and electronics. The recent launch of the MT-03 and now the MT-125 confirm that the doorway into the Dark Side of Japan’s is open to all – all you have to do is step in.

New MT-125: Darkness is the Next Level
Equipped with a new high-tech engine that offers even more thrilling performance, and featuring new radical styling, the MT-125 is the ultimate introduction to the 125cc class.

With an advanced premium specification that can hold its own against larger capacity models, the MT-125 gives young riders an exciting way to enter the Hyper Naked scene and become one of the Dark Riders. With its sporty chassis and strong all-round performance, this is also an ideal motorcycle for those riders who want a stylish lightweight for everyday use.

Powerful new 125cc engine with VVA
The new MT-125 is equipped with an all-new engine that benefits from some of the most advanced technology to be found in the 125cc class. One of its key features is the YZF-R125 derived Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system that ensures high levels of top-end performance while also delivering plenty of torque at lower speeds.

The VVA is an ingenious system that incorporates two intake cams, each one with its own rocker arm. The low cam operates up to 7,400rpm, and its profile and timing is designed to deliver a smooth and wide band of torque for strong performance at low to medium engine speeds. Above 7,400rpm a compact solenoid switches the engine from the low cam to the high cam, and its higher profile and revised valve timing gives a harder-hitting top-end that delivers increased performance from 7,400rpm through to the maximum power output at 10,000rpm – 1,000rpm higher than the previous design.

Along with its higher rpm ceiling, the new VVA engine also runs with revised gearing for more thrilling acceleration – and with its range of high-tech internals, the new engine is smoother and more economical.

Assist and Slipper clutch
The MT-125’s new Assist and Slipper (A&S) clutch is a significant upgrade for 2020 and offers a number of important benefits to the rider. Its extremely light feel at the lever reduces the level of physical input by the rider, making this lightweight Hyper Naked so much more comfortable in stop-start urban riding situations.

The A&S clutch also enables quick and smooth downshifting, and this helps to maintain chassis stability and give enhanced control when changing down through the gears – a particularly important feature when the road surface is wet or slippery.

Modern and aggressive new body design
The MT range is characterised by its dynamic style and naked bodywork. MT design is constantly evolving, and completely new bodywork for 2020 gives the MT-125 a much lighter and more aggressive look that perfectly conveys its thrilling and agile character.

Yamaha’s Hyper Naked models are instantly recognisable with their mass-forward body design in which the major components are located as close to the engine as possible to give a proud and aggressive stance. The new MT-125 features a smaller 10-litre fuel tank and a much shorter tail section that – alongside the new headlight assembly – contribute towards the bike’s ultra-compact silhouette.

Bold new twin-eye face
Featuring a dramatic new look with its dual slant-eye position lights, the new MT-125 projects a predatory and intimidating stare that confirms its position as the most dynamic naked 125. Beneath the twin position lights is a compact LED headlight with a powerful beam, giving the MT-125 a bold and defiant look that is evidence of the pure MT DNA flowing through its veins.

More comfort and control
Yamaha’s MT models have established a reputation for their agility and ergonomic riding position, making them the default choice for riders who want dynamic looks, thrilling performance and everyday versatility. The 2020 MT-125 takes comfort and control to the next level with its bold new bodywork and revised riding position.

The smaller fuel tank and new close-fitting one-piece seat enable the rider to move their bodyweight freely around the bike when braking or cornering, giving a feeling of greater control. To achieve a slightly more upright riding position the footrests are moved forwards and the handlebar position is raised – a configuration that helps to centralise rider mass while also enhancing comfort and agility.

Negative LCD instruments
The new MT-125 is equipped with LCD instruments that contribute towards the premium quality look and feel. This lightweight meter panel features a negative LCD display that includes a central digital speedometer, bar-type tachometer, two tripmeters, fuel reserve tripmeter and clock – as well as instant and average fuel consumption, average speed and a welcome screen.

Wide 140-section rear tyre
Viewed from the front the new MT-125 is a truly impressive looking motorcycle thanks to its aggressive new twin eye face. For 2020 this lightweight Hyper Naked comes with a wider 140-section rear tyre that not only gives high levels of traction when cornering, accelerating and braking – it also reinforces the bike’s serious MT family image and accentuates the big-bike look and feel. In every respect this is a bike to be proud of.

High-specification 41mm upside down front forks
The MT-125 is equipped with an advanced chassis specification that compares favourably with many larger cc motorcycles. The high specification 41mm upside down front forks give 130mm of responsive suspension action for precise handling together with confident roadholding – and the monoshock rear suspension is designed to deliver high levels of riding comfort.

New Deltabox frame and aluminium swingarm
Running with a 1,325mm wheelbase that’s 30mm less than the previous model – as well as revised steering geometry – the new Deltabox frame and aluminium swingarm enhance the bike’s mass centralisation for an even more sporty, agile and thrilling ride. The new frame design achieves an idealised balance of vertical, torsional and horizontal rigidity to give excellent handling performance – and it features a wider pivot point that accommodates a new high-spec swingarm.

Manufactured from aluminium and incorporating special bracing ribs on its inner faces that fine tune the rigidity, the lightweight swingarm is built to handle the wider 140-section rear tyre that effectively transmits the new engine’s high power output to the road surface.

Radial-mount caliper / 292mm front disc
The MT-125’s specification continues to impress with its radial-mount caliper and 292mm diameter front disc. Usually associated with larger capacity models, the radial design reduces caliper flex to give accurate fingertip control at lower speeds together with outstanding stopping power at higher speeds.

MT-125 Key Features
New 125cc engine with Variable Valve Actuation
Assist and Slipper clutch
Modern and aggressive new body design
Dual slant-eye positions lights; LED headlight
High-specification 41mm upside down front forks
New Deltabox frame and aluminium swingarm

New MT-03: feel the thrill as a true Master of Torque

With the launch of the iconic MT-09 in 2013, Yamaha initiated a brand new era in the motorcycle world. Some of the recent best sellers in Europe belong to the Hyper Naked segment and the Dark Side of Japan philosophy is now widely recognised and is the core of a growing community of riders. It symbolises the strong link with Yamaha’s Japanese origins, represents the brand’s inborn values of excitement and thrill related to outstanding performance and celebrates the unconventional attitude of the MT riders as true Masters of Torque (MT).

Hyper Naked and the MT range
With the introduction of MT Yamaha clearly showed the intention to create a new type of motorcycle aimed at riders looking for a new way to express themselves.

This was just the beginning, as the Hyper Naked segment was quickly developed to grow to become a range from 125cc through to 1000cc, offering riders the chance to step up in experience and performance through the complete MT line up. High spec models like the sporty SP versions on MT-09 and MT-10, and the MT-10 Tourer Edition, address specific niche customer needs and give further possibility to experience the world of MT. In total, the MT range has sold over 241,000 units in Europe during the last 6 years.

Hyper Naked design is in constant evolution and this is evident in the new MT-03. With a radical and aggressive new look and benefitting from advanced new technology and a higher overall specification, it is more MT then ever!

New MT-03: Dark Lightning
With its sophisticated engine, lightweight handling and true naked looks, the new MT-03 is fully in line with the signature MT family design.

Featuring a radical new look and feel, and equipped with a best in class 2-cylinder engine as well as state of the art suspension for precise handling and outstanding agility, the new MT-03 is the ultimate step-up model for those riders who are looking forward to joining the MT family – as well as being one of the most attractive motorcycles for male and female riders looking for their first full-sized machine.

Aggressive next-generation MT design
MT-09 brought a radical and dynamic look to the streets of Europe. With its naked bodywork, mass-forward design, thrilling linear torque and outstanding agility, the first Yamaha Hyper Naked was an overnight success that proved to be the start of a whole new movement.

Created using the same athletic DNA that has made its 847cc 3-cylinder sibling one of the best-selling Yamaha models of all time, the new MT-03’s aggressive next-generation design strengthens its iconic MT looks.

Dynamic new mass-forward body design
With a unique design that features a ‘tightly-packed’ look around the engine area, Yamaha’s MT models project a forceful and predatory character that marks them out from other models. This mass-forward look is taken to the next level on the new model with the new 14-litre wide-shouldered fuel tank cover and lightweight air scoops that reinforce the strong family links.

Dual slant-eye positions lights; LED headlight
The 2020 MT-03 is more MT than ever thanks to its aggressive new face featuring dual slant-eye position lights that convey a predatory look and underline the pure MT DNA running through its veins.

While the new dual slant-eye position lights are the main focus of attention and give the new MT-03 a dramatic and menacing stare, the small but powerful LED headlight is positioned centrally and inconspicuously beneath the front cowl assembly. Projecting a brilliant beam of light, this minimalist design gives the new model a unique and charismatic look that reinforces the bike’s bold and futuristic style.

Slim and light new LED flashers perfectly complement the position lights and headlight and integrate well in the MT-03’s aggressive new style.

Sophisticated 321cc, 2-cylinder engine
At the heart of this next-generation Hyper Naked is one of the most sophisticated powerplants in the class, featuring a balanced 2-cylinder configuration that delivers a much smoother feeling at lower rpm compared to some single-cylinder models.

Its high-tech internals include carburized con rods and lightweight heat-resistant forged pistons whose low reciprocating weight reduces vibration and enhances throttle response – and the all-aluminium DiASil cylinders offer excellent heat dissipation properties for reduced horsepower losses.

37mm diameter upside down front forks
One of the most significant technical upgrades for 2020 is the fitment of new high-specification upside down forks that deliver enhanced handling performance during braking, acceleration and cornering, to make the new MT-03 one of the strongest and most exciting performers in the A2 class. Featuring gold-coloured outer tubes and 37mm inner tubes, these new forks – together with the aggressive new front look and dual position lights – give this premium lightweight all of the presence and stature of a much larger capacity MT.

Long swingarm with new shock settings
Yamaha first introduced the concept of the extended swingarm on its YZF-R1 Supersport machinery, and the same technology is used to good effect on the new MT-03. Pivoting closer to the machine’s midway point, the 573mm long asymmetrical swingarm reduces the variance in the bike’s angle with the road surface to give a high level of controllability during braking, cornering and acceleration – and the shock’s revised pre-load and damping settings and the stiffer rear spring further refine the bike’s overall handling performance.

Lightweight and compact diamond frame
The MT-03’s lightweight diamond-type tubular steel frame is constructed to give the optimum balance of rigidity which contributes towards the bike’s agile handling and lightweight feel. By mounting the engine as a stressed member, Yamaha’s designers are able to keep chassis weight to a minimum, and with the fitment of the new 37mm upside down forks as well as uprated rear suspension, the 2020 model is built to deliver the most thrilling and sporty ride.

Ergonomic riding position
The fitment of a new wide-shouldered fuel tank and revised bodywork has enabled Yamaha’s designers to achieve the optimum riding position that enables MT-03 riders to experience the highest levels of comfort and control in different situations. The slim centre section allows the rider to mould their body closer to the bike, and the low seat height as well as higher-mounted handlebars and a compact frame guarantee a natural and ergonomic riding position that creates a special feeling of rider/machine unity.

New high-tech LCD instruments
The next generation MT-03 also benefits from new high-tech instruments that convey the feeling of quality that characterises this lightweight Hyper Naked. The state-of-the-art meter panel features a negative LCD display with all data displayed in white on a black background, and this new attractive multi-function design is also more convenient to operate.

Signature MT family look and high quality finish
With its dramatic new looks, redesigned mass-forward bodywork and new 37mm upside down forks, the MT-03 has the look and feel of Yamaha’s larger capacity MT models. From the aggressive new dual-eye face through to the LCD instruments, LED flashers and cast aluminium upper triple clamp, this dynamic lightweight is packed with premium features and advanced Yamaha technology, making it the one of the most sophisticated models in the important A2 licence category.

All-new WR250F Enduro model for 2020

Single Minded
For the 2020 season Yamaha will launch the quicker, stronger and lighter WR250F enduro bike that has been developed from the company’s winning YZ250F motocross machine. Featuring a new high-performance reverse-head engine together with the very latest bilateral aluminium beam frame and state-of-the-art front and rear suspension – as well as slimmer restyled bodywork – the new-generation WR250F is the most advanced 250cc 4-stroke enduro bike ever built by Yamaha.

Throughout its 20-year history this enduro thoroughbred has established something of a reputation for being one of the toughest and most competitive racers at all levels, with numerous national and international victories to its credit. At the same time as being a podium contender in the ultra-competitive E1 class, the WR250F has also become popular with trail riders who appreciate the bike’s ease of use, strong performance and outstanding reliability and durability.

High-performance YZ250F-based engine
The YZ250F is one of the most competitive motocross bikes at every level – as witnessed by its strong podium performances in the hands of Monster Energy Kemea Yamaha riders Jago Geerts and Ben Watson in the 2019 FIM MX2 World Championship, as well as Dylan Ferrandis’ victory in the 2019 AMA 250 Supercross West Championship in the USA.

The 2020 WR250F engine is closely based on the latest YZ250F design, and features a wide range of performance-boosting technology that gives stronger, linear power throughout the wide operating range. A new forged aluminium piston achieves a higher compression ratio of 13.8:1, and together with optimised exhaust cam timing and new intake port valve seats, these changes boost the engine’s low to mid-rpm torque levels to make this the ultimate E1 enduro weapon.

The previous model’s 10-hole injector is replaced with a new 12-hole injector as well as a new 44mm Mikuni throttle body and a revised intake funnel to give outstanding power characteristics – and to match these changes and improve the power feeling the 2020 WR250F is equipped with a newly designed crankshaft balancer weight.

Compared to the previous engine, the 2020 WR250F design delivers stronger power throughout the entire rev range together with increased performance at higher rpm, making it the most competitive 250cc 4-stroke Yamaha enduro ever built.

Lighter starter motor
For easy starting with faster restarts during a race the new model is fitted with a lightweight and compact starter motor that’s just 50mm in diameter. Located close to the centre of the chassis to achieve an idealised mass centralisation, this powerful 390W starter motor is powered by a compact lead type battery, and a new ACM provides a strong and reliable electricity supply.

Lighter and tougher clutch
Enduro is probably the toughest environment for any motorcycle clutch. From being slipped mercilessly through technical single-track through to aggressive full-throttle starts on special tests, it has to be able to handle hour after hour of sometimes heavy-handed treatment.

For 2020 the WR250F’s 6-speed wide-ratio transmission features a newly designed clutch that’s both lighter and tougher. Equipped with special heat resistant friction plates with a knurled finish, this new clutch gives a light feel at the lever and is designed to perform consistently and effectively for long periods in the toughest terrain.

Enduro-specific free flow air filter
Yamaha’s unique reverse head engine features a front facing inlet with the airbox mounted in front of the fuel tank – and for 2020 a newly designed air filter is fitted, enabling tool-free changes. The length of the inlet combined with the special free flow design of the filter contribute towards the new engine’s excellent feelings of traction and linear power, and its welded construction and additional rubber seals around the positioning pin ensure that only clean air reaches the combustion chamber.

Compatible with the Power Tuner smartphone app
For 2020 the WR250F’s power characteristics can be wirelessly tuned via a suitable smartphone loaded with the Power Tuner app. Previously this was only possible with the Yamaha Power Tuner device, but now it is easier and quicker than ever to adjust the engine running settings.

The Power Tuner app enables an even greater range of settings, giving the WR250F rider the opportunity to adapt the power output according to preference, terrain and riding conditions. Riders have the choice of 3 available factory mappings and the possibility to select from 16 adjustable values for fuel injection and ignition timing, giving a wide range of potential settings. The values are displayed on a 3D map for greater precision when adjusting settings in the desired rpm ranges, making it possible to fine tune the engine’s performance character to suit virtually every situation.

The Power Tuner app also features a race log, engine diagnostics, real-time monitoring screen and data back-up function, and the app allows riders to share and compare maps and race logs when planning race strategies or simply helping other riders to get the most from their bike.

Engine map switch
The WR250F is equipped with a handlebar-mounted dual engine map switch. This features two factory-set modes, but riders can choose to use their own custom maps created using the Power Tuner app. These can be uploaded to the WR250F’s CCU (Communication Control Unit), and the rider can switch between each map to suit changing conditions while riding.

Other engine changes for 2020

  • Revised lower cylinder cut-outs reduce pumping losses
  • Relocated oil filler and oil level gauge
  • Aluminium impeller and re-routed water pipe
  • New double electrode spark plug
  • Lightweight bolts and screws

CHASSIS

New bilateral beam frame for sharper handling
The new aluminium bilateral beam frame features a revised layout including straight fuel tank rails, and in order to achieve the desired balance of rigidity it is fitted with newly developed main engine mounts featuring additional external plates. The new design achieves around 15% increase in overall chassis rigidity to give a light and balanced feel, together with excellent feedback from the track surface.

Industry leading front and rear suspension
Yamaha’s front and rear suspension systems are widely regarded as being amongst the best if not the best in the off road world. For 2020 the WR250F is fitted with YZ250F type AOS (Air Oil Separate) front forks that use enduro-specific settings in order to be able to handle low and high speed riding situations on a wide range of hard and soft surfaces.

Running with 25mm diameter tubes – 1mm more than the previous model – and benefitting from an increased oil flow rate, the new Kayaba (KYB) forks give a secure feeling of contact with the ground. A new leaf spring in the mid speed valve (MSV) responds to the smallest amount of oil flow to give excellent low speed damping – and the enduro fork settings give a controlled feeling together with smooth transitional performance between the compression and rebound strokes. The new forks also feature higher rigidity front axle brackets that help eliminate flex to give an increased feeling of traction for increased stability and manoeuvrability.

At the rear the new YZ250F-derived shock absorber is fitted with a stronger and lighter coil spring that achieves a 350 gram weight saving, and for cooler and more stable damping characteristics the reservoir capacity is increased by 30cc.

Larger capacity slimline fuel tank
The new WR250F delivers an increased riding range thanks to the use of a new larger 7.9 litre fuel tank, an increase of 0.5 litres over the previous model. The new design has been developed from the YZ250F, and the additional capacity has been achieved by extending the tank downwards towards the bike’s centre to achieve optimum balance.

Slimmer and sharper bodywork, improved ergonomics
For 2020 this high performance 250cc 4-stroke gets a bold new race-bred look that brings it in line with the new-for-2019 WR450F and the latest YZF motocross models. The new radiator shrouds and airbox cover give a smoother and more unified appearance, while the new sidepanels and rear fender give a more aggressive look – and to keep the bike looking good, the bodywork features tough new wear-resistant in-mould graphics.

Even though the new tank carries more fuel, the 2020 bodywork is actually slimmer than the previous design – and together with a flatter and lower seat, both the ergonomics and rider mobility are improved.

Sleek new headlight cowl
The WRF family look is strengthened with the use of a sleek new headlight cowl that sits lower on the forks and is positioned closer to the rider. Not only does this contribute towards mass centralisation, it also creates a light and agile feel from the rider’s viewpoint.

Tougher lightweight skid plate
To give high levels of protection the WR250F runs with a new skid plate manufactured from lightweight plastic resin. As well as helping to shield the frame, water pump, hoses and engine cases, it also prevents dirt and mud ingress that can increase running weight – and its flat base helps to ensure a smooth glide over rocks and fallen trees.

Lightweight speed sensor and high-precision display
A new lightweight front wheel sensor sends data to a high-precision speed display, and by eliminating the previous model’s speedo drive cable and collar, the new system makes for faster front wheel removal and installation. The compact display also includes fuel level and engine management indicators.

JvB-moto returns with the brand new CP3

Yard Built: Retro Lines, Adrenaline Vibes
In garages all over the world, Yamaha owners dream of creating their own customised motorcycle. We seek to enable these dreams by asking talented customisers to provide inspirational ideas on how to transform Sport Heritage models into ‘Yard Built’ specials. Many builders will not only inspire Yamaha owners with their ideas, but will also make custom parts and accessories available to help owners turn their dream into reality!

JvB-moto Returns
The latest Yard Built project sees the return of long-time Yamaha collaborator Jens vom Brauck. Founder of JvB-moto, German custom builder Jens is hailed for the minimalism of his bike designs that bring out the vision of the original within a brand-new skin.
The first JvB-moto Yard Built special was the 2015 VMAX ‘Infrared’, a dragster-meets-café racer that marked the 30th anniversary of Yamaha’s iconic VMAX cruiser. Customised nose to tail from the sub-frame up, the retro Infrared cemented JvB-moto’s distinct style within the Yard Built community.

The VMAX was followed by the ‘Super 7’, the first customised version of the new XSR700 that showed off the huge range of options available (and sold by KEDO Germany) to personalise the stock bike. Re-imagining the XSR700 without any cuts or welds to the frame, JvB-moto produced yet another incredible machine that boasts clean, tidy lines while embracing the raw power and agility of the standard bike.

An Adrenaline-Fueled Concept
Four years later and JvB-moto has returned for another round of dazzling customisation, projecting their vision onto the 2019 Yamaha XSR900 to create the CP3. The bike was first presented at the 2019 Café Racer Festival where it received the Best of Show prize.
Talking about his latest creation, vom Brauck was clear in explaining his vision:
The biggest retro influence is on the lines and proportions. I am a big fan of 70s and 80s concept cars and got a lot of inspiration for this build there. The bike has an understated, clean look and has more of a concept bike ‘feel’ than a typical custom bike.”

The CP3 captures perfectly the JvB-moto design philosophy of clean lines that enhance the stock bike as a base for easy customisation and breathe new life into it. While the retro theme is in part an influence on the CP3, JvB-moto’s design stresses that the bike is a Yamaha through and through at its core, and one that is easy to customise. The dark blue Yamaha racing colour used was darkened further and made matt, highlighting the new bodywork whilst retaining the stock bike’s character. Though the design is inherently minimalist, the CP3 sports a number of cutting-edge modifications that elevate it from a typical custom bike to a true concept motorcycle. Carbon fibre wheel covers house the Pirelli Super Corsa tyres, with Behringer front brake disks packing extra stopping power. Lightech footrests help reduce weight and give an assuring platform for the rider, with a new seat to accommodate the feel of the CP3.

Ultimately JvB-moto envisaged the CP3 as a reflection of the XSR900’s powerful 850cc 3-cyclinder engine, unchanged in the customisation, and designed the bike to look how the engine feels to ride. The Termignoni exhaust amplifies the emotive sound of the triple and provides a small boost in horsepower, completing the CP3 package that raises the very high standard of Yard Built specials even further. Jens elaborated on this approach:
I wanted it to look fast without looking aggressive, for it to be less retro and more minimalist, with a reduced and purposeful design.”

A Concept Bike for the Customer
Yamaha’s Sport Heritage range is made of state of the art technology machines with retro looks – the range is an easy access to real personalization and through collaborations with professionals like JvB-moto, the brand aims to bring this creativity even closer to the customer.

Apart from bringing a stunning new concept bike into the world, JvB-moto’s CP3 above all else shows just how easy to customise and flexible the Yamaha XSR900 really is. As a result, JvB-moto is now developing a kit to enable customers to either reproduce their own CP3 or just adapt parts of it, emphasizing that the bike is a perfect fit for the vision of the intrepid customiser looking to easily make their own set of customisations to the Yamaha XSR900.

The kit includes:
–    Wheel covers
–    Brakes
–    Footrests
–    Seat
–    Exhaust
–    Front fender
–    Fuel tank covers
–    Handmade tail section with LED taillight
–    Speedometer relocation kit
–    Tapered handlebar and raiser
–    LED headlight and cover
–    Front and back LED indicators
–    Number plate carrier

There is also a range of parts yet to be developed. JvB-moto expect this bolt-on kit to be available to customers in early 2020, and will give them nearly unlimited options to tailor their own XSR900.

Taking the Covers Off
Demonstrating that the highly active Yard Built scene in Germany continues to go from strength to strength, the CP3 debuted in its homeland at a July Yard Built Night in Hamburg, alongside the Hookie Co. Grasshopper, another German-made 2019 Yard Built bike. Over 150 guests from motorcycle media outlets and the customising scene came together for the unveiling of the two bikes which was hosted at KEDO, a motorcycle dealer located next to an industrial railway line that perfectly suited the gritty, backyard feel of Yard Built bikes.
Both JvB-moto and Hookie Co. attended the launch, explaining in live interviews their individual approaches to customising bikes and how they envisage the Yard Built project. The builders also discussed their plans to offer bolt-on kits and parts for customers to purchase, embracing the Yard Built concept to empower Yamaha customers to imprint their own vision onto their motorcycles.

The CP3 and Grasshopper showcase the customising potential of the XSR900 and XSR700 and just how easy each model is to change to suit personal taste. With nearly fifty Yard Built bikes created, Yamaha has shown yet again how diverse and accessible retro style is in 2019.

Yamaha and Deus Collaboration Reveals The Swank Rally 700…and more!

From the beginning of the official Global Partnership between Yamaha and Deus in 2013, the already existing collaboration has been growing ever stronger. As a global technical partner Yamaha has been providing support for international events in Europe, USA and Australia. Of course what put the two brands together in the first place was their shared passion for motorcycle and customization that has originated a wide range of unique projects. Among some of their uber cool custom creations are the Deus SR400 ‘Lightning’, the XJR1300 ‘Eau Rouge’ and the stunning XV950 ‘D-Side’, based on a wide range of original Yamaha models The latest offering, the Swank Rally 700, takes the cool essence of Deus and blends it perfectly with Yamaha’s versatile and easily customizable XSR700. The result is a true Deus custom that delivers the engaging and emotional riding experience that the XSR is famous for.

A new Yamaha Yard Built: The pure off-road Swank Rally 700
Deus’ choice of the heritage infused Yamaha XSR700 was a perfect one. The 689cc motor’s strong linear torque and agile lightweight chassis form the ideal base for the new project. With off-road entertainment and action in mind, Deus mounted a Yamaha Super Ténéré 1200 front end, including forks, to the XSR along with a 19″ front wheel. Softer springs were used to account for the lower weight of the XSR700 and an Öhlins mono-shock rear was used to balance the suspension. Kineo tubeless spoke wheels were fitted front and rear and Metzeler Karoo rubber ensures maximum grip in the dirt.

Custom work includes a hand-beaten aluminium tank and a handmade saddle as well as a hand crafted aluminium skid plate. Keeping in true vintage off-road style, Acerbis front and rear fenders are mounted and Acerbis aluminium supports hold vintage plastic hand guards. A proper throaty growl signs off the Swank Rally 700 with a custom 2-in-1 SC exhaust.

The Reunion 2019, The Sardinia Swank Rally and Wheels & Waves
The Swank Rally 700 broke cover and was on display as one of the star Yard Built at this year’s The Reunion bike event at the historic Monza circuit, Italy in May before moving on to a big adventure, The Sardinia Swank Rally.

Celebrating the legendary Rally of Sardinia, first created by Renato Zocchi in 1984 after his return from the Dakar, the Swank Rally has two classes, one for vintage and one for modern machines. The Swank Rally 700 was the perfect bike to tackle the epic competition, bringing a mix of Yamaha’s Faster Sons vibe, Deus custom magic and XSR rideability to the event. Having successfully contested in Sardinia, it was of course on to Biarritz for the next stage of the summer, and the sun-kissed Wheels & Waves event. Adding extra flavour to the show, Deus arrived with a stunning 1958 Series 2 Land Rover, Landy, perfectly partnered with a vintage icon, Yamaha’s XT500, a machine that wrote the legendary opening chapters in the early days of the Dakar Rally in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Both vintage wonders rivalled the sunshine in glorious yellow liveries.

Fashion & Pitti 2019
Deus is of course a driving force in fashion so it was no surprise that the Yamaha and Deus collaboration also touched down in Italy for the Pitti 2019 event. Taking pride of place amongst the apparel and clothing were two superstars of Yamaha’s rally racing past – firstly a very special Yamaha DT 400 that took part in the 1976 Abidjan/Nice Rally, still wearing its original race livery. Demanding equal respect was a very rare Yamaha HL600 that saw action in the 1977 FIM Motocross World Championship.

The Yamaha Sport Heritage range is a major success with those riders who appreciate the unique formula that blends timeless style with a special character, sophisticated engine and chassis technology. This retro appeal mixed with contemporary high-tech motorcycles are enabling today’s riders to discover the true essence of motorcycling. It is the Faster Sons philosophy, a refreshing approach to motorcycle design attracting riders of all ages and backgrounds to the Yamaha Sport Heritage line.

From the first collaborative builds together and continuing with the official global technical partnership, the relationship with Deus and Yamaha grows stronger, bringing a shared passion for fun and emotional riding experiences and the custom lifestyle to a happy and engaged fanbase of motivated two-wheel enthusiasts around the world.
