5 Minutes with… Lissy Whitmore

5 Minutes with… Lissy Whitmore
“5 Minutes with….” produced by First Turn Media with photos supplied by Lissy ( Bonnie Lane & Photostrada )

It’s a new dawn for female motorcycle racers with the announcement of the inaugural FIM Women’s Motorcycling World Championship which commences this year, the opening round being at the iconic Misano “Marco Simoncelli” circuit in June. Of the 24 riders listed to compete, there is 1 rider who stands out on the list and that’s the only British rider to be competing, Lissy Whitmore. Lissy will be teamed with American rider Mallory Dobbs riding under the Sekhmet Racing Team Banner, spearheaded by Team Principal Maddie Patterson.

As with most riders, the story starts with “a dad with a bike….”

Lissy: Yes, my dad always had a bike in the garage and worked within the British Superbike paddock with Vivaldi Racing Team, so it was always something that as a family we were all interested in. In 2017 I started racing a 140 Pit Bike in the British Mini Bike championship, doing a couple of rounds that were local to where we lived. Progressing onto a Bucci 160 and managing to get a few podiums.

SBN: How was your experience with the British Talent Cup selection process early in your racing career?

Lissy: Me and dad applied to BTC as a bit of fun, not really expecting anything to come from it and I certainly wasn’t going to be upset if I wasn’t selected to take part in the selection event. When the selection list came out, I was really shocked to see my name on it. I remember thinking, surely that’s just the applicants list. At this point I had only been riding a year and the selection event was to take place at Silverstone on the Stowe Circuit. Having not ridden bigger bikes at this point, myself and my dad booked into a Ron Haslam training event to get some practice in before the BTC selection day. I unfortunately had a crash on one of his training bikes, partly due to lack of experience but I really did learn a lot and felt more prepared for the day. Despite only making it through the first round of selection testing on the day, the overall life experience was brilliant. I got to meet Albert Apugio, whose teams I had watched on MotoGP and some of the people who were at the event are still good friends of mine today, it was 100 % a great experience and feel privileged to have been part of it.

SBN: So following on from this, how did you land at OMG Yamaha?

Lissy: It had always been a Lass and Dad, always just a family racing set up. We started doing some track days before we decided to move into BSB, unfortunately everything was just going wrong at this point with consistent bike issues. I think I only managed to complete all the races over a weekend at one round that season. It was the Oulton Park round when I was walking through the paddock and Alan Gardener shouted “oi  – I want to talk to you” at the time I actually didn’t know who he was. I took my dad down to see him and after introductions, he invited us to Spain at the end of the year. It was offered as a, help us out kinda deal. We took our own bike out and we had a brilliant time and it really finished the year on a high. Not really giving the event much thought thereafter, it was when we went to pick the bike up in January and we met Alan at the pickup location that he offered me a ride on the OMG bike.  Of course, I said yes.

SBN: How did the year play out?

Lissy: It was really good, I learnt so much, about everything. About myself, team environments and dynamics, racing, the bike and my riding. It was a fantastic experience and something I am grateful to have had the opportunity to do. I experienced a few hick ups as is with racing and towards the end of the year I had a nasty crash at Donington Park which I injured my ankle and put me out for the last round. Obviously not how I wanted to end the year, but on the whole I think we had a really good year and I learnt loads.

SBN: At the end of the season, you parted ways with OMG and you went Road Racing at Olivers Mount, how did that come about?

Lissy: Yes, after leaving OMG our plans were to return to BSB as a Lass & Dad team again, however I got really ill in March 23 and I only managed to dip into a couple rounds but I just wasn’t happy enough to stay and the illness had really set me back. I really wanted to get back to a place of fun in my riding at this point for myself. I have always had a desire to try Road Racing, it’s a little bit of my heart and my ultimate goal would be the TT so it seemed logical to get on with the plan and go Road Racing. Olivers Mount I thought would be a fantastic starting point and it’s our only Road Racing in the UK.  I managed to do all the rounds bar 1 as I was wild carding at World Superbikes. It was fantastic and it really did bring my smile back and enjoyment back into my riding, I loved it.

SBN: The inaugural Women’s World Championship, wow – what an opportunity.

Lissy: I know right. Maddie (Patterson) approached me while I was at my wild card round with Worlds at Donington, she explained the details of this new women’s championship and that she was thinking of starting a team to compete and would I be interested in racing in the team. It was an absolute no brainer and a resounding yes. I always said to myself that if I was ever luckily enough to be offered a WSBK ride I would never say no. What a platform to grow on, there are so many talented females that are taking part that I feel so lucky to be apart of it and very humbled that I get to represent British female talent. I am also very lucky that I will still be able to take part in Olivers Mount this year to which the team support, though my priority will of course be the World Championship.

SBN: So outside of racing, what else does Lissy get up to?

Lissy: I did 5 years as an Army cadet, making it to corporal (covid hindered some further progression) It was a really interesting experience and I even managed to obtain my grenade license, though it has now expired. I participated in combat cadets, which is a national competition. I played football and athletics for the cadets, I think had I not have started racing then I would have gone into some form of the Military. I did apply for the RAF last year, but my eyesight isn’t quite the standard they require – though I must say its fine for my racing!

SBN: What training are you up to in the off season?

Lissy: I go to the gym every weekday and I really enjoy taking part in fitness classes, I find them really fun and social. I really enjoy running and biking too, generally I like just keeping active and this all helps ultimately for my overall bike fitness.

Lissy, if you could only eat one for forever, what would be? “My Mums spaghetti bolognaise”

Superbike News will be reporting on the Women’s World Championship in its inaugural year and we look forward to seeing Lissy’s progression, we are confident the racing will be just as entertaining as the rest of the support classes on the world stage.

Norwegian pre-production Press Bike number 90009. Estimate £30,000 – £40,000

Leading the line-up is the Norwegian pre-production Press Bike number 90009, two very collectable 1972 early production Z1’s, two Z1A models as well as a unique, original and unrestored Z1B.

Also in the sale is a pre-Kawasaki 1963 Meguro S8 Junior, Meguro were a huge producer of bikes in Japan in the 1960’s and were consumed by Kawasaki Heavy Industries when the Kawasaki brand was launched.

Super rare 1963 Meguro S8 Junior 250cc. Estimate: £6,000 – £8,000

ROOF extends the warranty of all its new E22.06 helmets to 7 years.

New warranty: 7 years from date of purchase.
In 2024, ROOF is one of the only manufacturer to master its entire manufacturing and distribution chain. The French Riviera manufacturer, with its high-quality products and its historically low after-sales return rate, has decided to extend the warranty period of its E22.06 helmets from 4 to 7 years. The process remains the same:  simply registering the reference of the helmet after creating an account on the roof.fr website.

A service for the consumer, a strong argument for the seller
Like all usual warranties, the ROOF warranty covers the whole helmet, the parts and liners, as well as the screws, for all forms of manufacturing defects and excludes only all matters related to the normal wear and tear, or issues related to shocks or improper handling of the product.

By extending the warranty to 7 years, the French manufacturer of high-end helmets and fiber specialist, is one of the first motorcycle equipment manufacturer to offer such a service, thanks to its manufacturing process control and to the quality of its jet, modular and full-face helmets.

At a time when the sustainability of products and their quality/price ratio are two important topics for the final consumer, ROOF is proud to be part of a responsible approach and to support its dealers with a service that will have no impact on the sale price.

Triumph Unveils Trident 660 Special Edition

Triumph Motorcycles has launched a striking new special edition Trident 660, featuring a dynamic, contemporary graphic scheme designed to appeal to new Triumph fans, and extra technology including Triumph Shift-Assist.

New for 2024, the Trident Triple Tribute celebrates Triumph’s legendary triple engines and will be available for one year only. This hugely popular naked roadster is now available with a distinctive graphic scheme, which is a contemporary take on Triumph’s iconic ‘white, blue and red’ racing scheme and features the distinctive ‘67’ number graphic, which once adorned the most famous Trident in history, ‘Slippery Sam’.

The Trident’s characterful and unique triple engine performance and celebrated handling will be even more enjoyable with the addition of Triumph Shift Assist adding to an already impressive specification and list of equipment for its class. Included as standard, the colour matched fly screen and belly pan add even more unique character to the Trident’s distinctive style, showcasing the exceptional standard of fit and finish that is synonymous with Triumph.

Paul Stroud, Chief Commercial Officer, Triumph Motorcycles said: “Since its launch in 2020, this middle-weight roadster has reinvigorated this highly competitive category, selling more than 35,600 units worldwide.

“It’s triple engine and premium detailing at a great price, has been successful in bringing younger and new riders to Triumph, and just as ‘Slippery Sam’ once inspired a generation, we believe this special edition has the iconic style, extra technology and dynamic performance to appeal to today’s Triumph fans.”

UNIQUE TRIPLE TRIBUTE EDITION DESIGN SCHEME

The Trident Triple Tribute has a stunning, modern design, inspired by the most celebrated Triumph triple bike of all time, ‘Slippery Sam’, which is the only motorcycle ever to win five TT production races in five consecutive years, from 1971 to 1975. The white, blue and red scheme with colour-matched fly screen and belly pan, stands out from the clean, minimal lines, beautiful silhouette and confident poise of the Trident. `

The distinctive tank design with number 67 race graphic surrounds the signature knee cut-outs, complementing the flowing seat line. With an impeccable attention to detail, the Trident 660 features high quality Triumph badges in both the headlight and taillight, and logo touches on the fuel filler cap, handlebar clamp and instruments, plus an inset aluminium Trident badge with diamond machined detailing. Body coloured radiator cowls, aluminium yokes & heel guards, body coloured fork protectors, tapered aluminium handlebars and teardrop shape mirrors, with five-spoke, black, lightweight, cast aluminium wheels, complete the eye-catching look.

TRIPLE ENGINE PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGE

Featuring a dedicated Trident tune, the popular 660cc triple engine was developed to deliver the character and performance benefits of a triple to riders in the middleweight sports naked category, providing the perfect balance of low-down torque, mid-range and top end power. A distinctive deep triple soundtrack is provided via a compact and minimal single sided silencer, with a premium stainless-steel finisher.

Fully Euro 5 compliant, the engine gives 81 PS peak power @ 10,250 rpm with a progressive, smooth and linear delivery, as well as 64 Nm peak torque @ 6,250 rpm. An accessory fit A2 conversion kit is available in Europe, including the A2-specific APS twist grip and a unique engine tune, which restricts peak power to 47 PS, or 35kW, and peak torque to 59 Nm. The bike can be de-restricted at the dealership, once the rider has completed their full licence.

The Trident’s smooth six-speed gearbox, with gear ratios and final drive that are optimised to make the riding experience easy and fun, is further enhanced by the addition of the Triumph Shift Assist, included as standard for this special edition. This quickshifter enables clutchless changes up and down the ratios, with an autoblipper on downshifts for fast, seamless changes.

CLASS LEADING HANDLING

Renowned for its agile, sporty and confidence-inspiring feel on the road, the Trident has an accessible 805mm seat height and a low wet weight of 189kg. It is already leading the class, with a high specification of branded equipment including black Showa upside down forks delivering 120mm front wheel travel, and Showa preload adjustable monoshock RSU with linkage, which delivers 133.5mm rear wheel travel.

For great stopping power, the Trident has two-piston Nissin brakes with twin 310mm discs and Michelin Road 5 tyres, giving the rider confidence in all weathers.

The Trident has its own dedicated chassis with tubular steel construction, lightweight tapered aluminium bars and lightweight 17” cast aluminium sports wheels which combined with the high specification equipment, delivers a light steering weight and agility that’s really confidence-inspiring and easy to control.

HIGH SPECIFICATION TECHNOLOGY

The Trident 660 provides all LED-lighting*, ABS, Road and Rain riding modes, switchable traction control and a ride-by-wire throttle, for crisp, precise throttle response, as well as a practical, multi-functional, colour TFT screen, integrated with a ‘white-on’ black’ LCD display. For enhanced security, an engine immobiliser is built into the key.

IXON a wave of innovation with two new airbags

IX-AIRBAG U04 and IX-AIRBAG U05: discover a new generation of airbags.

Choose the ultimate experience. 6 years after offering the first universal electronic airbag on the market, the iconic IX-AIRBAG U03, the IXON brand is presenting a new generation of airbag in 2024. Now, discover the IX-AIRBAG U05: inspired by Research & Development work with the brand’s MotoGP riders, IXON is reinventing the link between protection and comfort. You can push your limits anywhere with a product that can be used in all environments: thanks to its 3 fall detection modes, the IX-AIRBAG U05 is suitable for Road, Racing and Adventure use.

These new airbags are equipped with AIRFLOW CHANNEL technology, a unique and advanced ventilation system that provides maximum cooling for the body. The air flow is guided in and out of the airbag by 3D Mesh channels along the entire back and torso of the lining, inside the airbag. The specific 45° orientation of the 3D Mesh channels and the two central ventilation channels – on the torso on either side of the central zip and in the back in a central position – ensure optimum diffusion of the air flow and regulation of body temperature.

This technology has been developed in competition, directly with IXON MotoGP riders: it is used in the suits worn by Aleix Espargaro, Brad Binder, Miguel Oliveira and Takaaki Nakagami. The result of several years’ work on the track with some of the world’s best riders, AIRFLOW CHANNEL technology is now available to the general public.

The IX-AIRBAG U04 and IX-AIRBAG U05 offer perfect riding sensations thanks to the choice of ultra-light materials, a design that doesn’t restrict movement and a cut that’s very close to the body.

They are also highly versatile products: thanks to the 3 fall detection modes built into the In&box electronic unit designed by In&motion, these airbags are suitable for Road, Racing and Adventure use.

Protecting vital areas of the upper body, the IX-AIRBAG U04 and IX-AIRBAG U05 offer a high level of protection: these high standards have made it possible for the two airbags to be approved by various national federations in Europe and by the FIM, enabling them to be used in competition on circuits.

IX-AIRBAG U05 – Technical sheet

Discover the IX-AIRBAG U05: inspired by Research & Development work with the brand’s MotoGP riders, IXON is reinventing the link between protection and comfort. You can push your limits anywhere with a product that can be used in all environments: thanks to its 3 fall detection modes, the IX-AIRBAG U05 is suitable for Road, Racing and Adventure use.

Ventilation

  • Airbag equipped with AIRFLOW CHANNEL technology: a unique and advanced ventilation system offering maximum cooling of the body, with air flow guided in and out thanks to 3D Mesh channels along the entire back and torso of the lining, inside the airbag.
  • Technology developed in competition with IXON MotoGP riders: Aleix Espargaro, Brad Binder, Miguel Oliveira and Takaaki Nakagami.
  • The choice of outer materials also favours ventilation: in addition to the ST4 Ripstop sections the Hard Mesh zones on the front and back and the ultra-stretch Mesh on the sides are the 100% ventilated fabric zones.

Comfort

  • The choice of ultra-light materials for the inside and outside allows to offer an airbag with minimal weight.
  • The design has been developed so as not to restrict movement and provide a perfect riding sensation.
  • The cut is very close to the body: it avoids the feeling of a bulky layer and, on the contrary, allows the airbag to be forgotten.
  • Airbag supplied with a specific IX-CONNECT kit for perfect insertion of the airbag into the suit. Watch the explanation video: https://t.ly/ix-connect-dedicated-kit-tutorial

Versatility

  • 3 fall detection modes integrated into the In&box electronic unit designed by In&motion: the airbag is suitable for Road, Racing and Adventure use.
  • Switching from one mode to the other is just a click away via the My In&box mobile application.
  • The IX-AIRBAG U05 incorporates the only airbag technology offering 3 distinct detection modes: In&motion has developed 3 algorithms specific to each of these sports.
  • Approved by various national federations in Europe and by the FIM: the IX-AIRBAG U05 can be used in track competition, in national and international championships, including MotoGP.
  • From September 2024, homologation for use in motocross competitions provided it is combined with the RACING PACK, an optional chest protector pack that connects to the airbag.

Protection

  • In the event of a fall, the airbag is operational and effective in only around 0.055 s, i.e. well before the first impact: 0.033 s detection time + 0.022 s inflation time.
  • Inertial measurement system comprising 6 sensors (3 accelerometers and 3 gyroscopes) that measure the motorcyclist’s movements in real time: more than 1,000 analyses are carried out every second.
  • Inflatable cushion covering 5 zones of protection to protect vital areas of the upper body: neck, back, shoulders, thorax, ribs.
  • Latest-generation OPW inflatable cushion: up to 5 inflations before a factory check, i.e. 2 more inflations than the IX-AIRBAG U03.
  • Deflating: operation of the inflatable cushion optimised to provide protection in the event of a fall but also to manage the post-fall situation.
  • Riding time: 30 hours.
  • In&Box electronic unit recharge time: 2 hours.
  • Certification: CE-certified garment according to EN 17092-6:2020 C U standard, airbag tested according to protocol AMC-013.
  • Expanded foam back protection, 15% lighter than the back protection of the IX-AIRBAG U03. CE-certified protection according to EN 1621-2:2014 standard, type FB (“full back” protection) and level 1.
  • SRA rating for motorbike airbags: 5 stars.

Optional RACING PACK

  • Enhance your riding experience on the track with the optional RACING PACK: these are chest protectors specific to the IX-AIRBAG U05, connecting over the airbag and offering additional protection for the torso.
  • Chest protector pockets made from Hard Mesh and ST4 Ripstop with laser perforations.
  • These pockets contain SAS-TEC SC-1/CP7 chest protectors, CE certified according to EN 1621-3:2018 standard, type B and level 1.

Optional ADVENTURE PACK

  • Enhance your off-road riding experience with the optional ADVENTURE PACK: this is a hydration bag that connects only to the IX-AIRBAG U05 and lets you keep hydrated while riding.
  • Hydration bag made from Hard Mesh and ST4 Ripstop with laser perforations.
  • The water pouch to be inserted into the hydration bag is not supplied: the ADVENTURE PACK can hold a 1.5L or 2L water pouch. The ADVENTURE PACK contains 2 inside Mesh pockets to securely hold the optional water pouch, elastics on the top straps guide and hold the hose of the optional water pouch.

In&box electronic unit by In&motion

The In&Box Revolution offer at 120 € / year or 12 € / month corresponds to a subscription without commitment for the rental of the unit, the In&Box Classic offer at 400 € corresponds to the purchase of the unit.

Pro Blaze Panniers for Yamaha MT-09 and SP

SW-Motech Pro Blaze Panniers are now available for the latest generation MT-09 and MT-09 SP, adding much-needed carrying capacity to the stripped-down Yamaha street bikes.

Designed specifically for bikes with minimalist rear-ends like the MT-09, the Pro Blaze system offers the stability of hard luggage without the bulky scaffolding that’s normally involved.

To get set up, just fix the two discreet Quick Lock Mounts to the bike’s rear footrest hangers, then push in the two support rails; they’re now ready to accept the panniers.

The bags themselves are also a doddle to attach: just slide on the rails and clip in place. A wide Velcro® strap sits over the seat, securing them both together and distributing the load

Blaze saddlebag
The beauty of the rails is they keep the load stable, secure and away from the rear wheel and chain. They also stop the panniers moving, even during hard riding. When the panniers aren’t needed, the rails can be removed leaving only the clamps behind, and the bike uncluttered.

Lightweight and durable, Pro Blaze Panniers are made from a tough, UV-resistant 1680D Ballistic Fabric. EVA-reinforced sidewalls keep the bags in shape and their contents well protected. Each set comes with removable waterproof inner bags too.

Capacity is a generous 40 litres in total, and each bag can be expanded for extra capacity when needed. There’s also a Hypalon MOLLE system, for attaching additional SW Motech bags and carriers.

Super easy to live with, the main section is accessed via a wide top opening and there’s a handy zippered outside pocket for the essentials. A solid carrying handle makes them easy to handle off the bike.

Support Rail
A Pro Blaze system for the current MT-09 and MT-09 SP retails at just £346-including VAT.

Each set comes with everything needed to get set up: two saddlebags, model-specific Quick Lock Mounts and support rails, two waterproof inner bags, paint protection film, instructions and all fittings.

NEW Alpinestars GP Plus V4 Leather Jackets – in stock at Oxford Products

Alpinestars GP Plus V4 Leather Jacket

The race-derived GP Plus V4 sport Leather Jacket is more than just an evolution of the world-renowned V3, it’s a complete revolution. With a revised silhouette, improved material selection, a new modernised look with refined detailing, and a lighter overall weight, the GP Plus V4 Jacket is the perfect choice. The three main differences new to the GP Plus V4 are the use of A-CS™ Plus stretch material, GP-R Lite extended elbow armour, and a new, modernised graphic. A MotoGP derived material technology, A-CS™ Plus stretch provides increased stretch, high abrasion resistance, higher tear resistance than leather, plus a lower profile and overall weight – all important features that motorcyclists demand when it comes to increased comfort and performance. Completing the GP Plus V4’s chassis construction is a mix of race bovine and regular bovine leather, with tech stretch material on the chest, shoulders, back of the neck, and inner arms. There are DFS Dynamic Friction Shield external shoulder sliders with Nucleon Flex Plus CE Level 1 armour underneath. Brake Line Upgrade for KTM Duke 125

UK-made, Venhill braided brake hose kits for KTM’s lightweight Duke

Venhill’s new KTM Duke 125 Front and Rear Brake Hose Kits are a quick and easy way to boost stopping power, as well as improving feel and feedback.

Venhill hoses are precision made in their UK factory around a DuPont® Teflon® core. Highly heat-resistant, it won’t soften, expand or lose shape when it gets hot. Combined with a smooth, consistent bore it delivers more efficient fluid flow to the callipers, increasing braking force and feel at the lever and pedal.

Stainless steel braid is wrapped around the core, to stop further pressure expansion during hard braking. For a long life and lasting finish, a waterproof PVC jacket is then bonded on to the braid.

Simple to fit, the kits are tailor-made for the Duke and feature corrosion-free, stainless steel swivel socket nuts at both ends. These make them much easier to position than hoses with the fittings crimped onto the end.

For complete peace of mind, every set that leaves the factory is pressure tested to 1500psi.

Front and rear kits are available for all 2013-2023 Duke 125s. They come in a choice of 11 colours – including orange, to match up with KTM’s signature shade. The kits will also fit the 200cc and 390cc versions of the Duke.

Prices are £66.60 for the front and £66.60 for the rear (including VAT), both of which contain two hoses and all necessary fittings.

Find them quickly and easily – and order in ten different colour ways – using the www.venhill.co.uk Part Finder.
