R&G Set to Return as a Supporting Partner to Motoamerica

After three highly successful seasons as a Supporting Partner to the growing MotoAmerica series, Hampshire-based crash protection specialist R&G is excited to confirm it will be returning for 2023.

The 2022 MotoAmerica series proved one of the most nail-biting motorcycling championships of the year, with just one point separating eventual champion Jake Gagne and rival Danilo Petrucci going into the final round. Since its launch in 2014, the high-octane series has continued to go from strength to strength, with 2023 set to see the return of five-time Champion Cameron Beaubier.

Hampshire-based R&G is proud to be returning as an official Supporting Partner to the series for a fourth consecutive season. The partnership ensures that the R&G brand is prominently promoted to Stateside fans through the series’ messaging, trackside branding and social media.

Alongside supporting the series directly, R&G also supports a number of riders and teams throughout the paddock, most notably the 2022 Supersport Champions Vision Wheel M4 ECstar Suzuki, who field riders across the Superbike and Superstock classes.

R&G Managing Director Simon Hughes said,
“2022 was an incredible season in the MotoAmerica class and to come down to the final race is a testament to the riders and series. We have loved watching the action unfold and are proud to be able to return for a fourth consecutive year. We can’t wait to see what 2023 has in store!

“Having R&G back on board with MotoAmerica is fantastic,” said MotoAmerica Director of Sponsorship, Lance Bryson. “The quality that goes into R&G products is the reason you see motorcycles up and down our paddock using them; so the partnership makes perfect sense. The 2023 MotoAmerica season promises to be our best yet, with seven different race classes and we’re pumped to have R&G be a part of it all again. AIROH: Mathisse, the masterpiece helmet for the road motorcycling segment

Mathisse is back on stage, the masterpiece that since 2002 has been able to tell the values of AIROH: innovation, design and quality.

This iconic helmet has made versatility its strong point, having three different adjustable configurations according to the driving conditions. The innovative chin guard rotation system also allows the easy and quick passage from one setting to another, with a simple wave of the hand.

Considered one of the AIROH masterpieces, the Mathisse helmet stands out for its lines, which draw a unique and captivating style. The first version, dates back to 2002, was an absolute success thanks to its pioneering composition. When products are well designed from the earliest times, it is right to keep them and adapt them to changing tastes and needs, and so in 2021 Mathisse has assumed its current and innovative shape, completed with technologically advanced systems and able to look boldly to the future.

A helmet with a multifaceted soul.
Versatility is undoubtedly the real strength of the Mathisse helmet, which can be worn in three different configurations to adapt to different driving and climatic conditions. The design was designed to allow the rider to easily and quickly change the configuration of the helmet with a simple wave of the hand: the innovative chin guard can rotate 180 degrees, a mechanism independent from that of the visor, stopping at the rear part of the shell, allowing the helmet to be more aerodynamic without neglecting elegance. In this way, Mathisse can be worn in different driving and climatic conditions, adapting to both urban use and touring. The rider can change the setting of the helmet at will, wearing it as a full-face helmet, so with the chin guard closed, as a “jet” with the chin guard opened, or in the third configuration without the visor, to underline a vintage-chic look.

The quality of the details of the made in Italy helmet.
The AIROH Mathisse is the ideal ally to accompany the rider along every route, guaranteeing maximum visibility thanks to a wide range of integrated elements: to protect from sunlight, the helmet is equipped with the Sun Screen Visor, while the Pinlock lens, already applied to the product, prevents fogging. Furthermore, the visor can be positioned in anti-fog mode, which allows the recirculation of air, in addition it is entirely covered with anti-scratch protection, also available in different colors, spare part able to customize the product in consideration of different tastes and needs.

Ideal for touring enthusiasts, Mathisse is Bluetooth Ready and it has also the Stop Wind included, to limit air infiltration and to protect against the cold. Thanks to perfect balance and optimal weight distribution, the Mathisse helmet guarantees comfort even on the longest journeys. Furthermore, by rotating the chin guard 180 degrees, the helmet takes on a perfectly aerodynamic and balanced shape, thus guaranteeing perfect balance even when the helmet is open emphasizing the pleasure of riding.

Mathisse has removable and washable inner lining, made of hypoallergenic fabric and pleasant in contact with the skin.

OptiMate Cable Converter for Heated Clothing

OptiMate’s O-67 Cable Kit converts an SAE battery charger lead to a DC jack for heated clothing.

Power heated clothing direct from your motorcycle using a regular battery charger lead with the OptiMate O-67 SAE – DC Cable Kit.

The handy kit comes with an O-67M SAE to 2.5mm Jack/Plug (male) and an O-67F SAE to 2.5mm Socket (female) lead, which are compatible with most heated garments. Both plug straight into any industry standard SAE 2-pin connector for an instant and secure connection straight to the battery – no need to run multiple cables from the terminals – and are a generous 30cm long to allow for short wires from heated clothing.

When parked up, simply disconnect the cable and plug the lead from the bike into an OptiMate charger to keep the battery in good health – something that is particularly important during colder weather.

Also included in the kit is an O-27 SAE to SAE Polarity Adapter, which enables connection to a range of other accessories.

All three adapters have a cable rating of 16AWG (1.32mm2) SPT-2W; feature weatherproof in-line seals on each SAE connector; and are tested to -40°C/-40°F, for complete confidence in a cold and damp winter environment.

The kit retails at just £29.90 and is covered by a 3-year warranty for complete peace of mind.

Highly Anticipated Street Triple 765 Range to Tour Triumph’s UK Dealerships

The new Street Triple 765 R and RS will be on display in Triumph dealerships between 25th January and 19th March 2023.

The new Street Triple 765 display from Triumph Motorcycles begins a nationwide dealership tour this week, in advance of the official release in dealerships in mid-March. Stopping for just a couple of days at each dealership, the Street Triple 765 Showcase gives customers the chance to see both the Street Triple 765 R and RS up close.

The RS will be displayed on a special tilted stand for knee-down photo opportunities worthy of Augusto Fernandez.

Dealers will be on hand to answer questions about what is one of the most eagerly anticipated bikes of the year, and customers can familiarise themselves with the enhanced ergonomics of the most powerful and poised Street Triple 765 line-up ever.

Devron Boulton, General Manager of Triumph GB said “We’ve seen huge interest in the new bikes. Indeed, the Street Triple 765 Moto2TM Edition has already completely sold out in the UK, so if you are interested in the new Street Triple range, we would encourage you to head down to your participating dealership and place a deposit to secure one of the first R or RS models in the country. The Street Triple Showcase is a chance to view our new Street Triple 765 range in the flesh before its official release to dealerships, and who doesn’t want to snap a selfie as you hit the perfect apex.”

Major updates to the Street Triple R make this the new definitive streetfighter, while a new Street Triple RS sets a whole new benchmark for performance naked sports.

Developed from the Moto2™ race engine programme resulting in a significant step up in performance, the R model has increased power, torque and performance making it a great introductory model to the collection with its competitive price point, while still delivering 120PS in its significantly upgraded triple engine. The RS model boasts an improved chassis and highest ever specification Brembo Stylema brakes as well as an additional track riding mode and category-leading peak power of 130PS making it the most powerful Street Triple to date, with the updated ergonomics and features to match.

Prices start at £9,595 for the R, just £100 more than the previous model, and £11,295 for the RS.

Classic Dirt Bike Show Hosts Four Decades Of Stunning Bikes

An eclectic mix of title-winning bikes covering four decades will be displayed at The Classic Dirt Bike Show sponsored by Hagon Shocks on February 11-12.

Representing the 1950s is Jeff Smith’s 1953 BSA Gold Star on which he won the 1955 Scottish Six Days Trial. The machine is very easily recognisable – the BSA factory competition department drilled hundreds of different sized holes in it, giving the bike its name: Smith’s Woodpecker Goldie. Jeff won the 1954 Victory Trial on this bike in a rigid format before changing to swinging arm mode in mid-1954, after which he won many trade-supported nationals in 1955.

The 1960s is represented by another famous BSA on which Scott Ellis, the Studley Midlands engineer, somewhat surprisingly won the 1965 British Experts Trial in one of the hardest ever UK trials events. Battered by snow and bitterly cold winds, Scott beat Sammy Miller by two points – 64 to 66 – in a winter Birmingham MCC thriller. Scott’s machine was highly modified, not having the usual engine cradle, having oil in the frame and a special light alloy cylinder. The cream of Britain’s trials riders had to play second fiddle to the 24-year-old who secured his triumph at the infamous and previously unconquered Bongham Alley sections in Wales. Tackling the bike’s reconstruction is the experienced Colin Dommett. It’s been stripped entirely since 1971 and will be displayed for the first time ever at next month’s show at Telford International Centre, which Colin and Scott both plan to attend.

In the 1970s, ‘Magical’ Mick Andrews was truly the Monarch of the Glen, winning the Scottish Six Days on five occasions. French super-enthusiast, Olivier Barjon, will take Mick’s famous ‘cantilever’ 1974 Scottish winning Yamaha to the show. It was the first time that a cantilever or monoshock machine had won a major event. Mick hasn’t seen the bike for 39 years and will attend the show for a nostalgic look at his old steed, which has been impounded in the French Yamaha importer Sonauto’s headquarters for most of that time. Mick won the 1974 event, beating trials supremo Malcolm Rathmell into second place.

In the 1980s, Telford guest Dave Thorpe was the king, winning the Motocross World Title three times in 1984, 86 and 89. He also took eight British Championships and the World Veterans crown. All his world titles were on a Honda machine, and two of them are still in the UK so Dave hopes to secure the 1986 bike to display at the show. Dave’s first two titles were gained in dramatic fashion at the Wohlen circuit in Switzerland each time from Belgian superstar Andrew Malherbe. For the title chase in 1989, the much-missed Eric Geboers was forced to play second fiddle to the powerful Brit. Since retirement, Dave has secured major success as the UK team manager for the 1994 Motocross Nations, guiding the British team to its first success for decades. These days, Dave works in an ambassadorial/promotional role for Honda, while also running Honda’s off-road training at all levels. He also still finds time to run the Honda factory’s World Motocross team. Thorpe’s career highs and lows will be revealed to visitors as commentator John McCrink quizzes the motocross star when they take to the stage at Telford.

Metzeler: the new Extra Soft for extreme enduro makes its debut

The MCE 6 Days Extreme product line for enduro competition is enriched with the addition of a new rear specification in 140/80–18 size designed for the most difficult technical sections and harshest terrain.

MCE 6 Days Extreme, Metzeler’s family of tyres designed for enduro competitions, expands with the introduction of the new Extra Soft rear specification specially developed for extreme enduro races.

The new MCE 6 Days Extreme Extra Soft rear, in 140/80–18 70M NHS size, is a specialist tyre suitable for one-day competitions and special stages. It features a tread compound designed to guarantee maximum performance in extreme conditions from both a technical and environmental point of view, therefore effective even in very low temperatures. Thanks to the high level of grip, the Extra Soft allows riders to tackle even the most difficult obstacles and to restart easily even from a standstill, in the absence of a run-up. Furthermore, the very consistent overall deformation of the carcass guarantees a good level of comfort and makes it an easy tyre to use, even for less experienced riders.

The Extra Soft specification, which visually stands out from the rest of the range due to the presence of three parallel white stripes on the tread, features a new layout of the knobs to ensure optimal performance even at high lean angles, less wear and greater resistance to fatigue. These characteristics are very important in extreme enduro competitions in which the tyre is subjected to cyclical and multidirectional deformations. The compound is also completely new, based on 100% Carbon Black and highly resilient, which means it is capable of absorbing deformation energy. It also has a very wide range of use: working even in very cold temperatures.

The Extra Soft completes the Metzeler range for enduro competitions, a discipline that has involved the German brand since the first decades of the last century. Developed together with the best riders and teams of the FIM Enduro and FIM Hard Enduro World Championships such as KTM, GAS GAS and Honda, the MCE 6 Days Extreme tyres have written pages of history in the most important enduro competitions and are chosen as original equipment by the best manufacturers for their off-road models.

Although they were designed for Enduro and Extreme Enduro World Championship riders, the MCE 6 Days Extreme tyres are also suitable for enthusiasts of the discipline who want to equip their motorcycles with high-performance tyres that make traction, versatility and resistance of the knobs their strengths.

The range of MCE 6 Days Extreme tyres includes a wide variety of specifications designed for different enduro applications and which allow riders to find the most suitable solutions for their needs. The front tyre is available in different sizes and in three versions: standard, soft and super soft. The rear is available in nine sizes divided between five different versions: standard, medium, soft, super soft and the new extra soft.

Rotary Racing Royalty At The Bristol Classic Bike Show

HASLAM, Nation, Crighton; names known to all race fans, names synonymous with a golden age of racing, and names set to entertain on stage in just a few weeks.

The trio are among the star guests at the upcoming Bristol Classic Bike Show, set for February 25-26 at the Royal Bath and West Showground in Shepton Mallet, and if you want to hear what they have to say – as well as enjoy hundreds of other attractions at the show – then get your skates on to enjoy a special ticket discount price.

‘Rocket Ron’ Haslam is one of Britain’s most successful racers, winning two world titles, four British Championships and having raced in over 100 grands prix. He’s an Isle of Man TT race winner, claimed a record six Macau GP wins and has beaten the best in the world, names including Gardner, Sarron and Mamola. He’s also been a team mate to Freddie Spencer and Keven Schwantz to name just two.

Trevor Nation will forever be associated with the stunning John Player Special RCW588 Norton racing machines. Starting out in 1978, Nation soon made a mark and the following year won for the first time. A proper TT winner in the proddie class on both a 750cc and 1000cc machines, he also guested at three grands prix. He certainly earned his seat on the factory Norton team, getting their first win at Cadwell Park in 1988 on the development bike the RC588 – beating the likes of Whitham, Foggy, Spray and Morrison in the process.

‘Mr Rotary’, the legendary tuner, designer, and uber engineer Brian Crighton, will be joining Haslam and Nation on stage to talk all things rotary and of course, the bikes and the men who rode them. Crighton, a three-time British champ himself, was a service engineer at Norton in 1984 and a year later was promoted to R&D. It was there he spotted there was a real potential in the company’s 588cc air-cooled rotary. Determined to prove his point, and defying the management’s conventional approach, he worked in his free time from the caretaker’s shed… the rest, as they say, is racing history.

Nigel Hole, commercial director of the show’s organiser Mortons Media, said:
‘We’re absolutely delighted to have two legendary racers, one incredible engineer and four rotary machines live on stage to entertain our guests throughout the weekend. Bristol is always a highlight in our events calendar, but this year we are even more excited to bring something extra (John Player) special to the show!’

The union of the Norton bikes and the men who rode them – watched by thousands in person and millions on terrestrial TV – will enthuse both racing fans and motorcycle enthusiasts, and adds to a show which already has a great foundation with excellent autojumble stands, some of the UK’s best privately-owned classic motorcycles and a host of owners’ clubs to give it a real community feel.

The event also offers one of the earliest chances of the year for visitors to stock up on classic parts, spares, accessories and riding gear for the season ahead. It’s a popular date on the motorcycling event calendar, attended by more than 16,000 like-minded enthusiasts every year.

Discounted advance tickets are on sale for the show, with a one-day adult pass costing just £14.50. Tickets will also be available on the gate at £17 – youngsters aged 15 and under get free admission. Free parking is available on site.

1988 Ducati 851S Kit Bike Tricolour 888cc
The next Silverstone motorcycle sale offers a fabulous group of 15 Ducatis – some of the very best and rarest machines seen for some time. The four machines below provide just a taste of what is in store for visitors to this auction, with 120 bikes in the auction.

This Ducati 851S Kit bike was presented to Ron Haslam in 1989 by Cagiva. It is estimated to sell for £40,000 – £50,000. The 851S ‘Kit bike’ represented the advent of the 4-valve, liquid-cooled, fuel injected race bikes from the late 1980s.
One bike was given to each the 1990 Cagiva ‘Works’ riders Ron Haslam, Randy Mamola and Marco Lucchinelli. This bike has never been used and is in original and unrestored condition.

It comes complete with all the original bagged-up spares including exhausts, gaskets, valves, spark plugs. Other original items included are a workshop manual, factory bulletins, parts list and factory paddock stand. Paperwork included includes Customs & Excise 386 form made out to Ron Haslam for the outstanding VAT paid on import. It is not UK-registered and will require some recommissioning before use.

This bike represents a great opportunity to own an important part of UK motorcycle racing history.

1994 Ducati 888 Corse 926cc £40,000 – £50,000
Factory-built Ducati 888 926cc Corse race bike, one of only 26 examples of this model built in period, it comes complete with a Ducati Letter of Authenticity.

It has been a part of the same collection for over 20 years and is in an unused condition and still has the original battery fitted. It will require recommissioning before use.

A very rare, period marketing brochure included it will make a great addition to any serious Ducati collection.

1995 Ducati Senna 1 916cc – £35,000 -£40,000
This ‘Time-warp’ Ducati 916 Senna 1 showing only 519 miles was inspired and introduced after Senna’s death in 1995 with profits going to the Insituto Ayrton Senna charity.

Of all the Senna badged Ducatis, the 916 Senna 1 is the most collectable. It is in original condition and showing only 836km (519 miles) recorded. It has been part of a private collection and stored indoors for the last few years. Complete with original manuals, both keys, original exhaust, microchip, paddock stand, original marketing material and service receipts. As an Italian import it comes complete with Italian registration papers and current NOVA. In running order and a great addition to any serious Ducati collection.

2000 DUCATI 996
And then there is this beauty – a 2000 Ducati 996 with just seven miles on the clock! It is estimated to sell for £12,000 to £14,000.

The Ducati 996 followed on from the glorious 916 before being replaced by the much loved 998. Ducati have produced motorcycles that leave a distinguished legacy. They are as much loved and sought after now as they were when they first appeared. The Ducati 996 played a big part in the marque’s story.

Rowan Huntley of Silverstone Auctions, comments: “This is an exceptional opportunity to own a completely unused 996, still on its original tyres with only delivery miles. It is truly amazing how this bike has been kept unused since 2000. Finding low mileage bikes always surprises me, this being no exception as it looks like its been ridden straight out of a time machine.”

More information about these motorcycles along with over 120 or so other motorcycles that will be coming up for sale with Silverstone Auctions at the MCN London Motorcycle Show Sale on the 18th February can be found on their website www.silverstoneauctions.com. Fresh look for LS2 180° Flip-Front

New graphics for LS2’s dual-homologated 180° flip-front.

LS2’s Advant dual-homologated 180° flip-front helmet gets fresh colour ways for 2023.

The super subtle Matt Silver ‘Special’ and the contemporary ‘Bend’ Matt Black/Red and Black/Blue/Red/White ‘Sport’ graphics – both of which complement many of 2023’s new machines – bring the modular Advant range to a total of nine colour options.

Tested to the latest ECE 22.06 safety standard and certified P/J for use in the open and closed position, the Advant is very versatile and easy to live with.

The opening mechanism is designed to keep the Advant’s outline compact and neat, while making operation simple too. The chin bar sits close to the face, so there’s less leverage on the neck and head when opening and closing, and the visor automatically lifts with the chin bar, in one one fluid movement.

The visor is Pinlock-ready and an intuitive release mechanism enables swift and smooth removal and refitting.

Comparable to much more expensive high-end composites, the exclusive Kinetic Polymer Alloy shell is strong, flexible and light – the Advant tips the scales at only 1650 grams.

Venting front and back, with channelling through the multi-density EPS inner, brings instant airflow when needed. The breathable Comfort Lining is removable and washable, and the cheek pads feature an Emergency Release System.

Practical additions like the Drop-Down Sun Shield and quick-release Micrometric Metal Buckle make life comfortable on the road too.

The LS2 Advant comes – as standard – with a Pinlock insert, Helmet Bag, Carrying Rucksack and Air Bag Support for easy cleaning and maintenance. Prices start from just £249.99 in solid colours. Graphics and special colours, as shown, are £269.99.

Exhilarating new Nightster® Special model

Exhilarating performance is delivered by the Revolution® Max 975T liquid-cooled V-Twin engine, tuned to make tremendous torque at low RPM. • A 11.7 litre fuel cell located below the seat moves the weight of fuel low in the chassis, which lowers the center of gravity for improved handling. The fuel fill is reached by lifting the hinged locking seat.
  • Selectable Ride Modes: Road, Sport, Rain, or create a set of custom modes
  • Rider Safety Enhancements by Harley-Davidson: Antilock Braking System (ABS), Traction Control System, and Drag-Torque Slip Control System.
  • All-LED lighting
  • Standard cruise control and USB charging port.

Nightster® Special SRP starts at £15,395 / €19,795

Freewheeler® Model Goes Dark
The Freewheeler® model, an attitude-soaked, cruiser-inspired trike, gets a blacked-out restyle for 2023. The front end, headlamp nacelle, tank console, hand and foot controls, powertrain and exhaust all have black finishes in place of previous bright finishes. The result is a dramatic change in appearance that reinforces this model’s raw, hot-rod attitude.

New Gloss Black cast aluminum wheels feature exposed rear-wheel lug nuts for performance styling. Rear 18-inch wheels replace 15-inch wheels to give the Freewheeler® model a dramatic new stance. Riding on three wheels has never been so awesome.

Launched in 2019, the Yamaha Ténéré 700 has opened up an exciting new world of freedom and adventure for over 40,000 European riders. With its high torque CP2 engine, agile handling and serious long range capabilities over virtually any terrain, the Ténéré 700 is the most versatile motorcycle ever produced by Yamaha.

As well as being the definitive adventure bike for riders looking for a lightweight round the world machine, the Ténéré has proved its outstanding Rally performance in 2022 with Ténéré World Raid Team’s legendary rider Alessandro Botturi winning the Tunisia Desert Challenge. Teammate Pol Tarrès made off-road history by taking his Yamaha Ténéré 700 further than any other 2-cylinder machine at the Erzberg Rodeo.

By bringing together the worlds of Touring, Rally and Enduro like no other machine, the Ténéré is undoubtedly the most outstanding Adventure model ever built by Yamaha. Now we stand before a new horizon, bringing customers closer to the true meaning of the word Ténéré and coming within a very short reach of actual Rally Racing. Yamaha has created a whole new immersive Ténéré Spirit Experience that opens up even more possibilities for Ténéré Riders with the same hunger for more adventure and our dedication to Riders for Health.

New Ténéré Spirit Experience for 2023
Yamaha is totally committed to ensuring that every rider is given the chance to enjoy their Ténéré to the full in a diverse range of riding situations. For 2023 Yamaha is introducing the exclusive new Ténéré Spirit Experience in which Ténéré owners can join some of the world’s most famous Rally Raid events, with the official Yamaha World Raid Team.

A total of 20 Yamaha customers and their motorcycles will be transported to their chosen Rally Raid where they will follow both the actual route and a parallel route to the race competitors and live alongside the race team in the bivouac each evening. For many riders this will be a once in a lifetime experience that will live in their memories forever, and for others it may ignite a desire to compete in Rally Raid in the future.

Run by former Enduro champion and Dakar Racing Team manager Marc Bourgeois through his company MBSM on behalf of Yamaha, the Ténéré Spirit Experience is open to Yamaha Ténéré owners who want to take their adventure riding to another level and get a real taste of Rally Raid but without the intense pressure of competition while also being able to experience the beauty the landscapes provide.

Total package from start to finish
Ténéré Spirit Experience is a total 360 degrees package that is designed to cover every aspect of the preparation, flights, bike transportation and every aspect of participation in the customer’s chosen Rally Raid. Suitable for standard Ténéré models
Customers will be riding their own machine at the Ténéré Spirit Experience events, but they don’t need to worry about making too many modifications. MBSM technicians will equip every bike with special wheels and tyres as well as navigation equipment prior to the ride – and in some cases the participant’s Ténéré will also be required to be fitted with an extra fuel tank for specific events.

Join the Ténéré World Raid Team at four legendary events for 2023
The team of Marc Bourgois (MBSM) will take charge of both the Racing organisation and the Customer program under the umbrella of the Ténéré World Raid Team. Allowing for seamless integration of true racing spirit and customer experience.

The 2023 Ténéré Spirit Experience includes four of the most famous Rally Raid events, starting with the Morocco Desert Challenge in April, followed by the Hellas Rally in May. After the summer break the TSE and TWRT continue with Transanatolia in September and conclude with the Tunisia Desert Challenge in October.

Ténéré Spirit Experience riders will be sharing the bivouac with Ténéré World Raid Team riders Alessandro Botturi and Pol Tarrès who will be competing at selected events – and there will also be extra top level guest riders joining various races.

Vespa 946 Celebrates With A Special Edition Dedicated To The Year Of The Rabbit

Vespa 946 Celebrates Its Anniversary With A Special Edition Dedicated To The Year Of The Rabbit.

This is the first collection of a series which will encompass 12 years. Limited and numbered, it will bring back the iconography of the lunar calendar.

The beginning of a new lunar year brings us not only the enthusiasm of rebirth and the joy of spring, but also the iconography of a new animal for the horoscope to reference. January 22nd, 2023 welcomes the year of the rabbit, a symbol and omen of peacefulness, well-being and respect for the past.

The Vespa 946 10° Anniversario, dedicated to the year of the rabbit, will be issued in a limited and numbered series of 1,000. This will be only the first stage of an important project that will span the next 12 years and which will see the introduction of a new annual edition each year, inspired by the lunar horoscope animal of that year.

Since its debut in 2013, the Vespa 946 has established itself as the archetype of the Vespa of tomorrow, which interprets the values that have made Vespa a global icon while injecting it with a contemporary spirit and a forward facing attitude. It is an Italian-made masterpiece, which has now become a real collector’s item, taking shape in a dedicated production line that is more like a haute couture atelier than anything else. This special version is issued in a reworking of the classic Vespa green, to symbolize the love of fun, light-heartedness, and nature typical of those born under this sign. The stylized silhouette of a rabbit peeps out on the body.

All the details of the Vespa 946 10° Anniversario are made in a refined burnished finish with warm reflections, while the double-upholstered saddle is black with burnished stitching and is sewn by hand with needle and thread, as are the handgrips.

Further details will be available on www.vespa.com starting from 22 January 2023.

Passion For The Pioneers: Ultimate ‘His And Hers’ Collection At Bonhams Paris Sale

A remarkable ‘once in a generation’ collection of important pioneer and collector motorcycles, motor cars and related automobilia, built up over decades by an enthusiast collector couple, is to be offered at the Bonhams Grandes Marques à Paris Sale, in the French capital on 1 February 2023.

More than 50 early motorcycles and circa 20 motor vehicles to include early motor cars, commercial vehicles, tractors and some farm machinery from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, collected over four decades by the late German couple, Peter and Ulrike Bühner of Hagen, will be offered in Paris, with many of the lots appearing for the first time at auction.

The collection started in the 1980s with a 1950s Wanderer motorcycle, similar to one Peter had owned in the 1960s, and grew to encompass the finest machines of the Pioneer and Vintage eras, representing marques from BMW to Vincent. The €1.6 million Dr. Peter and Ulrike Bühner Collection of Important Pioneer and Collectors’ Motorcycles and Motor Cars is headlined by a Hildebrand und Wolfmüller, the world’s oldest serial production motorcycle.

Highlights include:

1894 Hildebrand und Wolfmüller, estimate €110,000-170,000

1894 Hildebrand und Wolfmüller, estimate €110,000-170,000
A completely original example of a Hildebrand & Wolfmüller, the first powered two-wheeler to enter series production and the first such device to which the name ‘motorcycle’ (motorrad in German) was ever applied.

Powered by a water-cooled, four-stroke parallel twin engine displacing 1,488cc – until relatively recently the largest power unit ever fitted to a motorcycle – the motorcycle was capable of speeds approaching 30mph.

This is reputedly the earliest numbered example in existence.c.1924 BMW 493cc R32, estimate €90,000-120,000

Launched at the 1923 Paris Show, the R32 was the first motorcycle to be sold as a BMW, featuring a ‘flat twin’ layout for its 494cc engine which would be forever associated with the marque. Superbly finished and produced, the R32 was an immediate success, selling over 3,000 units over three years.

This R32, featuring its original supplier’s plate, offers an ideal opportunity for an enthusiast to celebrate the centenary of BMW Motorcycles in 2023.

c.1925 MARS ‘Weiße Mars estimate €90,000-110,000
Having begun motorcycle manufacturing in 1903, the German firm Mars built the futuristic ‘White Mars’ (Mars die Weisse) in 1921, designed by engineer Claus Franzenburg and fitted with a 986cc Maybach boxer twin in a box section pressed steel frame. A true work of art finished to a very high standard, the motorcycle was priced accordingly.

1898 Cudell De Dion Tricycle with ‘Lady’s Attachment’ Trailer, estimate €70,000-100,000

1898 Cudell De Dion Tricycle with ‘Lady’s Attachment’ Trailer, estimate €70,000- 100,000

Believed to be one of only seven in existence, the machine features a ‘ladies attachment’: a wicker trailer capable of accommodating a single passenger.

1912 FN Four, estimate €28,000-38,000
The World’s first production inline-4-cylinder motorcycle, produced by the Belgian arms turned motorcycle manufacturer, the FN Four had its public debut at the 1905 Paris Motorcycle Show at the Grand Palais and immediately enjoyed commercial success. The Four was also the world’s fastest production motorcycle in 1911/12, with a 40mph top speed.

c.1923 Nimbus 746cc Four ‘Stovepipe’, estimate €40,000-60,000
The result of diversification by the Danish vacuum cleaner manufacturer, Fisker & Nielsen, the Nimbus motorcycle first appeared in 1919. The advanced inline four-cylinder models used shaft final drive and pressed steel frames from the start of production. Early models featured a distinctive tubular spine frame that doubled as the fuel tank, soon gaining the nickname ‘stovepipe’.

c.1907 Zedel 200cc Single, estimate €10,000-15,000
Originally a Swiss company, Zürcher & Lüthi (Zédel, or ZL) built their first motorcycle engines in Switzerland, then complete single-cylinder and V-twin machines in Paris. This example was a favourite of Ulrike Buhner, who regularly rode it in the Pioneer Run, becoming known as ‘Ulrike Zedel.’

Ben Walker, Global Head of Bonhams Motorcycles, said: “This is one of the best collections of Pioneer and Vintage motorcycles – in terms of quality and quantity – to come onto the open market in recent years, offering machines that we haven’t seen in the marketplace for more than a decade. It’s an exciting, once in a generation opportunity for enthusiasts and collectors and we are expecting considerable worldwide interest.”

Passion for the Pioneers
Peter’s initial passion was for motorcycles, but he came to share his wife’s love of Veteran cars, particularly rare or old machines, adding key examples to his collection, which also encompassed classic tractors.

So great was their passion for their Pioneer vehicles, that the collection outgrew their garages. As a result, they made use of their dining room, firstly housing motorcycles, then for a Morgan three-wheeler, with the family being relegated to their kitchen at mealtimes.

As their family said: “We three children were brought up with motorcycles taking centre stage in the dining room. After the collection started to grow, the dining table was dismantled.”

The ‘infernal noise’ of the Morgan starting up while being prepared for a rally, prompted Peter to convert their own and then a neighbouring haybarn, into a private motorcycle museum designed by Ulrike, where he spent most of his time when he retired.

In accordance with Peter’s philosophy, the machines were kept in running order, as original as possible and were used regularly for pioneer events. The pair participated several times on both The London to Brighton Veteran Car Run and the Pioneer Run for motorcycles, which was campaigned by Peter on his favourite machine, a Phänomen, whereas Ulrike’s preferred ride was her Zedel.

The family also took part in key German events, such as the famous ‘International Ibbenbürener Motorrad-Veteranen-Rallye’, one of the worldwide largest events for veteran motorcycles, and the Schnaufferl Rally for pre-1914 cars in Ibbenbüren.

Ben Walker added: “With Peter and Ulrike having both sadly passed away in the past couple of years, their children have kept selected vehicles for their own pleasure and enjoyment but look forward to seeing the balance of the collection going to likeminded enthusiasts and collectors.”

The collection will cross the block on the afternoon of Wednesday 1 February at the prestigious sale staged in the Grand Palais Ephémère, by the Eiffel Tower. All lots will be available to view throughout the day.
