Handy Hanger for Brühl Bike Dryer

Sturdy steel wall mount for Brühl’s range-topping bike Dryer.

Declutter your workspace with the Brühl Wall Hanger, which keeps the MD2800PRO Dryer out of harm’s way, yet easy to reach when needed.

Mounted to a workshop or garage wall, the robust steel carrier allows the MD2800PRO to be stored at a safe height and in a convenient location.

It frees up floor and cupboard space and keeps the Dryer out of the way of vehicle wheels, work boots and other potentially damaging situations.

Neat and simple to use, the Dryer’s rubber feet slot into recessed holes, and the sturdy strap holds it firmly in place. When you need to dry your bike, undo the quick release clips and lift it down.

There are also hooking points for the flexi hose and power cord, keeping both tangle free and preventing trip hazards.

The low profile design means when the Dryer is in use, the Wall Mount itself won’t get in the way either.

Brühl Dryers are a handy addition to any workshop or garage. Blowing air at speeds of up to 80 metres-a-second, they blast water off surfaces and get moisture out of hard-to-reach areas. Not only does this reduce the risk of corrosion and electrical failure, it also prevents water-spotting, for a streak-free finish.

The Brühl Wall Hanger for the MD2800PRO Dryer retails at just £25 including VAT, and comes with mounting instructions and hardware.

Updated OptiMate Battery Monitor

Weatherproof 12V battery lead and monitor, for instant checking and easy charging.

Updated for 2023, the OptiMate O-124 is a combined monitor and SAE socket, giving 24/7 battery status in the blink of an LED and hassle-free charging of your motorcycle starter battery.

A must for commuters, touring and year-round riders, the OptiMate O-124 gives an instant health status of any 12V AGM, STD or GEL battery, and will also confirm if the vehicle charging system is working correctly.

When it’s time to top up, simply plug any OptiMate battery charger into the built-in SAE socket; no additional adaptors or leads needed.

Quick and easy to set up, the O-124 connects directly to the battery terminals. It now comes fitted with ringlets that can be converted from M6 (1/4″) to M8 (5/16″), so it will fit the most commonly found sizes of battery terminal bolt.

Unlike app-based monitors, it doesn’t rely on third party applications or devices, and draws almost zero power from the bike’s battery; long term draw is less than 0.2mA.

Fully weatherproof and rated down to -40°C, it’s completely safe to leave attached to vehicles that are parked outside. There’s also an inline 15A fuse to protect both the battery and the bike’s electrical system.

The OptiMate O-124 retails at just £26.90 including VAT – a small price to pay for never being caught out by a dead battery again – and is covered by three-year warranty.

P3 and Vaisala Xweather Deliver World’s First Dedicated Weather App for Motorcycles

P3 digital services, leading provider of In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) systems, and Vaisala Xweather, leading developer of global weather data and mapping solutions for business, announce their collaboration, and creation of a weather app specifically designed to meet the needs of motorcycle riders.

P3 designed and engineered the new app for a major international motorbike manufacturer, and it is currently being deployed.

The new app is the result of P3’s successful integration of Xweather APIs with Android Automotive OS. The new weather information application will join P3’s rapidly developing SPARQ OS IVI platform.

The new P3-engineered app enhanced with Xweather data provides information that is highly granular, with motorbike riders in mind. In addition to temperatures and precipitation status and predictions, the app indicates wind velocity and intensity.

Uniquely, it gives the rider an understanding of weather conditions that is continuous for the entire journey. This makes the app far more useful than otherwise possible with conventional weather apps which only provide sequential snapshot data that is point to point, town to town.

The detailed information enabled by Xweather is particularly valuable to motorcyclists whose two-wheeled means of transport is more affected by weather conditions than fellow road users travelling in the shelter and comfort of a car.

The motorcyclist receives a comprehensive and dynamic weather forecast with data describing conditions as they travel, from the start of their journey, uninterrupted until the destination is reached. The app is even intelligent enough to capture average travelling speed and provide advice on dealing with surrounding conditions.

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with the infotainment experts at P3, and to be joining the SPARQ Android Automotive ecosystem,” said Ross Harrison, Strategic Partnerships & Account Executive at Xweather. “When it comes to delivering leading edge technology innovation, partnerships are key, and we’re immensely proud that our joint solution will be playing a big role in improving motorcycle travel for millions of riders around the world,” he added.

<image004.png>“It’s an honor to be chosen by a leading manufacturer to deliver a truly next-generation user experience to its motorbike rider customers,” comments Marius Mailat, CTO & Managing Director of P3 digital services.

“We’re also really excited to be partnering with Xweather on this ground-breaking project, one that is set to significantly enhance rider experience and safety,” Mailat added.

120dB Disc Lock from Kovix

Combining seriously solid stainless steel construction and an ear-splitting alarm, the new Kovix KNX15 Disc Lock adds two layers of security in one for motorcycles and scooters.

Bike theft remains an ever-present threat in Britain. Powered two wheelers were 11 times more likely to be stolen than cars in 2021, and represented over 25% of all stolen vehicles in the UK.

To reduce risk, both the Metropolitan Police and the Motorcycle Industry Association advise riders to ‘layer’ security – using more than one device to maximise protection.

The Kovix KNX15 alarmed disc lock adds two layers of security in one device. Its strong stainless steel body and 14mm carbide-reinforced locking pin stop the brake disc from rotating, preventing the bike from being ridden or wheeled away. Both are designed to resist hammer and cutting tool attacks.

The pin is double-locking, which stops the ‘jaw’ of the lock from being prized open, and it is operated with a pick-proof maximum security key.

Encased in the steel body is an ear-piercing 120db alarm, which activates whenever the built-in Triaxial Shock and Movement Sensors detect anyone interfering with the machine. Louder than a police siren (110dB), the ear-splitting noise is enough to put off even the most determined thieves.

An easy-to-use on/off function allows the alarm to be disabled and re-armed by the user. An automatic reset feature also features, should the system be accidentally activated.

Easily stashed in luggage or under a seat, so you can take it wherever you travel, the Kovix KNX15 retails at £134.99. It comes complete with a long-life lithium battery, carry bag and full instructions.

Quad Lock unveils two NEW Motorcycle Mounts

Introducing the Brake Reservoir Mount and Brake/Clutch Mount.

Quad Lock has expanded its motorcycle range with two new motorcycle mounts: the Brake Reservoir Mount and the Brake/Clutch Mount.

Quad Lock’s new motorcycle mounts are a great option for riders with limited space on their handlebars, fork stems, or mirrors. These mounts are compatible with a wider range of motorcycles, including maxi scooters, and provide a secure and convenient way to mount your phone.

The Brake Reservoir Mount securely attaches to rectangular brake fluid reservoirs with a multi-pivot arm adjustment that allows you to find the perfect viewing angle. Whilst, the Brake/Clutch Mount attaches to the brake or clutch perch on motorcycles, giving users the flexibility to mount on either the left or right side of the handlebars, making it perfect for riders of all preferences.

The Brake Reservoir Mount and the Brake/Clutch Mount are made from the toughest materials and feature Quad Lock’s well-renowned patented dual-stage locking mechanism, ensuring security even during the roughest rides and terrains. They are also compatible with all Quad Lock cases, Universal Adaptors and accessories such as the Vibration Dampener, Weatherproof Charging Head, and Motorcycle USB Charger.

Statement from Martin Loscher, Senior Product Design Engineer of Quad Lock:
“The mount solutions are specific for maxi scooters, scooters and motorbikes unable to accommodate a handlebar or fork stem option and provide an alternative mount solution to the mirror mount. The mounts are suitable for riders who prefer an offset phone position without obstruction to gauges and displays. Intensive vibration and impact testing ensures the mounts exceed the toughest conditions riders can throw at them.”

Vantrue F1 Motorcycle Dash-Cam

Our colleague Ells at Ride and Rest has spent the last couple of weeks with the Vantrue F1 Motorcycle dash-cam

First impressions – The packaging and presentation are worthy of an apple product, it’s a small matter I know but when a company presents its stuff to the end user it gives a warm fuzzy feeling to see this? Yep, I’m a packaging pest! 😊 I also like a sticker or two!

What’s in the box then? The base unit, two cameras, battery connections, the necessary leads, instructions, remote device, cable ties, sticker pads, screwdriver, screws, etc.

The only thing I did need to provide was a micro-SD card to fit into the unit.

Installation – I watched a couple of videos about this before attempting it myself. Unsure if the guys doing said vids were a bit bone but I had it all done within an hour and a half. At least 45 minutes of that time was trying to find a suitable site for the front facing 4k camera. The MST’s* front end is quite angular and it still needs a tweak to get spot on. I will mention in this section about the sticker pads provided for both cameras and the remote unit… utterly USELESS! I have had to remove the supplied pads and use some genuine 3M stickers to get the right result. As stated above though it did come with some screws so I may utilise these also. The rear will be easy as I can screw straight into the Givi top box rack. The front is a bit more problematic though so needs a bit more thought before I attempt.

Set Up – Easy, download the app, sync app with base unit, away you go. Absolutely no dramas at all. Took perhaps a minute to establish the connection first time. Subsequent syncing takes seconds.

Mobile App – simple, easy, intuitive. Browse through your files – both cams loop on 1-minute intervals, cut, crop, delete, there and then in app, or simply download to your phone for later use on video editing suites. Whilst on this subject – each video taken (front and rear) is time and date, lat’ and long’, elevation, speed stamped. So be careful with the right wrist as it may get thee in trouble with the fiveO!

Camera quality – I’ve got an Insta360 X3 which just blows my mind every time I use it, the image quality is better than that of the Vantrue F1 however it is a dedicated sports cam, so I must remind myself that they are not comparable.  The quality of the Vantrue cams is very good, 4k front is superb, 1080p rear is also pretty good. I haven’t encountered any mucky weather yet this week, so when I do I will have to give the lenses a booghie before setting off.

Summary
Smart, quality, simple to use and it could be invaluable if the worst were to happen one day. Once it is installed it just fire and forget until you have a notable incident. I captured a van driver on Thursday who very nearly caused a 3-car pile-up due to his stupidity and lack of concentration. I would have been involved also if my spider senses were not so keen, so in that scenario it is a very useful tool for those who rely on their motorcycles daily to get to and from work. Of course it will not prevent an accident but the footage quality would be very useful for a courtroom situation, insurance claim, etc.

For more info or to purchase the dash cam head to the Vantrue website https://www.vantrue.com/en-gb/products/f1

Cardo Systems breaks down barriers with new software update

Cardo Systems breaks down barriers with new software update, giving Cardo users the freedom to connect seamlessly with all major Bluetooth communicators.

Cardo Systems, the global market leader in wireless communication systems for powersports riders, today introduced a new software update to its cross-industry Bluetooth connectivity.  With this latest software release, connecting with a non-Cardo Bluetooth unit is now as seamless and fluid as connecting via Bluetooth to another Cardo communicator. The power to bridge the gap between communicator brands via Bluetooth connectivity is yet another game-changing innovation from Cardo as it continues to pursue industry-wide Bluetooth standardization and bring more riders together.

Inspired by the launch of Open Bluetooth Intercom (OBi), Cardo commissioned an independent international study* that proved consumers desired a simple and intuitive process to communicate with their fellow riders who didn’t have the same brand of communicator. Despite Cardo Systems already offering class-leading cross-brand connectivity via the OBi standard, and championing its leading Mesh technology, the developers at Cardo took the challenge of including even more brands head-on.

“In a recent survey conducted with motorcycle communicator users across the globe, Intercom connectivity with other brands was one of the most popular suggestions from respondents when asked what could be done to improve their communication experience,” said Dan Emodi, Chief Marketing Officer, Cardo Systems. “We’ve always strived to offer our own customers more and with this update we’re able to offer more independence for our users and friends using devices from other major brands, giving much greater choice, freedom and flexibility.”

With a simple Over-The-Air software update for all current 2023 Cardo devices (excluding the PACKTALK SLIM), from the top-of-the-range PACKTALK EDGE to the Spirit, the new update provides simple connectivity via Bluetooth with current-generation devices from Sena, Midland and Uclear. All users will now have the same experience as using the same intercom brand without the usual hassle of complex pairing and the frustrations such as losing a phone connection or sacrificing the ability to receive phone calls and navigation instructions. The only feature that is not supported in this cross-brand connection is music sharing, just as it’s not supported between two different generations of Cardo products.

Cardo users can simply download the latest software version from their Cardo Connect app, Over-The-Air and with no need for a cable, to activate the functionality. There is no need to press any specific button combination to pair or connect.  As new versions and upgrades are made available, a pop-up in the Cardo Connect App will appear automatically.

  • Easy Clip: An accessory designed for hats, snugly fitting GO 3 above the head for a hands-free, high-angle shot.

  • Pivot Stand: A reusable sticky mount with an adjustable design that allows for tricky angles to be shot with ease. Completely redesigned, the stand also unscrews to reveal a 1/4” mounting point for attaching to a selfie stick or tripod.

Multifunctional Action Pod: Remote Preview and Enhanced Control

A completely new innovation, the Action Pod is a hub that takes your shooting capabilities to the next level. A housing, remote control and charger for GO 3 all in one.

With a convenient 2.2″ flip touchscreen, the Action Pod connects to GO 3 over Bluetooth for real-time remote control and live preview. Difficult angles, from a cat’s collar to a kid’s bike, can now be easily framed and mastered. The best part—the Action Pod and the camera are compatible with the same magnetic mounts, ensuring hassle-free setup and enhanced versatility. Running low on power is now easily remedied by simply putting GO 3 into the Action Pod, attaching it to the same mount, and continuing to shoot.

Coupling all of this with an IPX4 water-resistant design for the Pod and IPX8 waterproofing to 16ft (5m) for the camera, GO 3 is perfect for capturing memories anywhere. A signature of Insta360, GO 3 comes equipped with FlowState Stabilization and 360 Horizon Lock, ensuring silky-smooth footage even in the most action-packed scenarios and eliminating unwanted tilting or distortion. A replaceable Lens Guard also comes pre-installed for worry-free shooting.

Remarkable Improvements for Flagship Performance

Insta360 GO 3 addresses the pain points of the GO series, bringing sweeping enhancements to ensure this new generation of tiny camera has staying power. Software optimizations and a resolution upgrade to 2.7K deliver crisp, vibrant videos. With no clip length limitations and a larger 310mAh battery, creators can keep shooting for up to 45 minutes without the Pod—a 50% increase on the previous generation.

Sporting an additional mic, GO 3’s dual microphones offer clearer and crisper audio over its predecessor. Voice Control 2.0 also comes with this upgrade, allowing for complete hands-free operation of GO 3, no matter the situation.

New recording modes are also available, including Pre-recording, Loop Recording and Timed Capture. With Timed Capture, simply schedule GO 3 to power on and start recording at a specific time. No more waking up early to shoot a sunrise timelapse!

A World of Possibilities with the GO 3 Ecosystem

As is the case with all Insta360 cameras, GO 3 is more than just a camera; it’s backed up by Insta360’s powerful app and editing ecosystem, designed to simplify your filmmaking journey.

FreeFrame Mode enables you to modify the aspect ratio of your footage after shooting, so you can edit the same clip for a 9:16 Instagram Reel as a 16:9 YouTube video. Where other action cameras force the user to pre-select the aspect ratio before shooting and only save the content within that aspect ratio, GO 3 saves all the content for sharing in any aspect ratio, offering unmatched flexibility.

Insta360’s infamous AI-powered editing features automatically curate your best clips and edit them into custom reels. The app’s intelligent features and user-friendly interface allow you to focus on your creativity while the technology handles the rest.

There’s also a whole host of creative modes to create inspiring content. TimeShift for hyperlapse montages, AI-powered PureShot HDR for photos with enhanced dynamic range, slow motion up to 120fps and stunning timelapses are all possible with GO 3.

‘Hey Cardo, ask my partner to marry me…’

Cardo’s most recent customer survey revealed that over 250 Cardo users had proposed over their Cardo – just 20 years ago, this wouldn’t have been possible, as motorcycle communication devices didn’t exist except for hand gestures and shouting at each other at traffic lights.

Cardo launched the world’s first motorcycle Bluetooth-based wireless intercom headset and since then has been responsible for most of the industry’s innovations including the first mesh-powered intercom, the first premium sound system by JBL, and the first voice-powered communications system.

With over 18,000* respondents from 114 different countries, a close look at the data showed there were a lot of similarities between the global #CardoFam…

Nearly 60% of respondents rode wearing a full-face helmet with flip-up and modular options being the second most popular types of helmets.

Just over 44% of riders had adventure and touring models and the majority rode with 3-15 riders. Leisure was the purpose of riding for those surveyed, passion and freedom were cited as the top choices as to the reason behind their miles -and for over half of those surveyed, riding helps to improve their mental state.

When taking a riding holiday, 45% of riders choose to do more than 476 miles/766 km – no wonder that other than their Cardo, snacks, and drinks were the thing they didn’t leave the house without!

Over half of the respondents had used a communicator for three years or more and over 70% had chosen Cardo as their first-ever device.

Be sure to listen out for Cardo users singing along while riding – nearly half of those surveyed use their device to listen to music with 17% humming along, 44% singing occasionally, and 17% admitting they ‘perform’.

With answers from around the globe and riders all experiencing differing weather conditions, it was no surprise that the three most loved features of Cardo devices are: Sound by JBL, Waterproof, and Dynamic Mesh Connectivity.

When it comes to talking, ‘Family’ and ‘Spouse’ attributed to over half of the calls made by users with ‘Friends’ making up just under 30%.

Another thing that the #CardoFam was in agreement about was that nine-time Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champion Valentino Rossi was their favourite celebrity biking role model, followed by six-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez and ‘King of Cool’ Steve McQueen in second and third place respectively.

Lithium batteries – Choose right and it will see you right

Thinking about upgrading to a lithium starter battery? OptiMate, the battery-saving experts, say it’s crucial to choose the right one if you want it to last.

Lithium starter batteries are a popular upgrade from the lead-acid units most motorcyclists are familiar with. However, motorcycle riders report being let down by lithium batteries, even though they take care to maintain them.

The team behind OptiMate battery chargers and maintainers first became aware of the problem after being contacted through social media by increasing numbers of bike owners who’d purchased lithium batteries, only to find them failing with no obvious reason.

The root of the problem is that lithium batteries are specified to match or exceed the CCA or Cold Cranking Amps (the power needed to turn the bike’s starter motor) of the equivalent lead-acid battery. However this results in a lower reserve capacity – measured in Amp hours (Ah) – typically half or less than the lead-acid battery it replaced.

A bike needs reserve capacity for two reasons: to power 12V systems before the engine is running, and when the battery is put under extra strain, during slow, stop-start riding and when running accessories like heated grips or fog lights.

So, to cope with the rigours of everyday riding, the buyer needs to make sure the lithium battery they choose has a high enough Ah reserve capacity: at least half of the 10-hr or 20-hr Ah rating of the lead-acid battery it’s replacing.

As an example, the Yuasa YTZ10S, (a suitable lead-acid battery for the Yamaha MT-09), has a CCA rating of 190 Amps and a 20-hr rating of 9.1 Ah. The lithium replacement would need a rating of at least 4.55 Ah to be able to perform in the same way.

Many lithium replacements advertised for the MT-09 have a similar CCA rating, but a capacity of only 4.0Ah or even less, which is not sufficient to keep all systems running.

If you’re thinking of upgrading to a lithium battery, make sure you do that homework. And remember that lithium batteries discharge faster than lead-acid, so it is important to connect it to a smart charger whenever it’s parked up between rides. OptiMate offer a range of lithium chargers and their Duo range can charge both lithium and lead acid batteries, automatically detecting which type of battery is fitted and maintaining it accordingly.
