BMW Motorrad Announce Exclusive Cooperation To Incorporate Alpinestars Airbag Technology

BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars announce that they are starting an exclusive cooperation in innovative motorcycle safety clothing systems. The first product to be launched under this cooperation will be a BMW Motorrad jacket jointly developed by BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars, combined with an airbag waistcoat developed using Alpinestars technology. The new BMW Motorrad jacket, being branded by both makers, will be available in both male and female versions and the public presentation of this newly developed airbag jacket will be held later this year.

The airbag waistcoat is based on Alpinestars’ Tech-Air™ airbag system, the world’s first self-contained street airbag system that independently functions without the need for sensors to be installed on the bike and the subsequent need to link a specific motorcycle to the airbag system used by the rider.

This means that the airbag waistcoat offers the freedom to ride any bike on any surface at any time and can be used with any type of BMW Motorrad motorcycle or scooter, allowing the rider to easily switch between bikes without reconfiguring or reinitializing the bike-to-rider set-up.

Therefore, the system is immediately ready for use and no time is wasted in setting up electronic pairing between rider and/or passenger and motorcycle. This BMW Motorrad/Alpinestars jacket and airbag waistcoat offers comprehensive upper body protection including shoulders, back and frontal torso. By incorporating its sensors close to the rider’s body the airbag system activates without the need for a triggering wireless signal to be sent from the bike.

BMW Motorrad is the only motorcycle manufacturer to have developed the complete range of rider equipment ever since the 1970s – from motorcycle helmets to rider suits, boots and gloves. In doing so, high priority is attached to maximum comfort for the rider and passenger as well as minimizing the potential consequences of accidents.

BMW Motorrad has always regarded motorcycling and safety as being inseparably linked and anchored in the “Safety 360°” principle. “Safety 360°” breaks down the overall concept of safe motorcycling into three facets: safety

technology in the vehicle, safety deriving from rider equipment and safety through rider training Alpinestars has been innovating motorcycle riding technology for rider protection, performance and comfort for over 50 years. The Tech-Air™ airbag system, which forms the basis of their active safety cooperation with BMW Motorrad, is the result of Alpinestars’ intensive research and development which commenced in 2001.

For decades, both companies have maintained a leading role in active and passive motorcycling safety. This new cooperation, between BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars, is now extending their position further through this joint development agreement.

BMW C evolution leads the charge as UK

Government announces grant saving up to £1,500 for electric motorcycles.

Business Minister Matthew Hancock announced the subsidy which will apply to BMW Motorrad’s electric maxi-scooter.

New purchasers of the BMW C evolution maxi-scooter will be among the first riders able to take advantage of a grant for electric motorcycles just announced by the UK Government.

The grant offers up to £1,500 off the purchase price of a new electric motorcycle and allows motorcyclists to reduce both their running costs and environmental impact.

Up to £7.5m will be set aside to boost the uptake for electric two wheelers, with significant benefits both for the environment and reducing personal travel costs.

Phil Horton, General Manager for BMW Motorrad UK, said: “This is hugely important step forward in the government’s policy for electric vehicles. BMW Group is at the forefront of electric vehicle development with the i3 and i8 cars – and the C evolution is the first two wheeled electric vehicle to bear the Motorrad brand. With the grant from the Government factored in, the C evolution becomes an even more appealing option for urban commuters and riders.”

Business Minister Matthew Hancock said: “Low emission vehicles are the future and show that we can meet our climate change commitments without giving up our cars or motorbikes. Electric motorcycles and scooters have got fantastic potential and can be a real force for good.

“This investment shows we are serious about increasing the uptake of cleaner vehicles in the UK and offer a fantastic place for firms to locate their R&D and manufacturing facilities. Supporting new technologies is a key part of our long-term economic plan.”

Customers purchasing a new electric motorcycle meeting the subsidy’s requirements – which includes the BMW C evolution – will have the purchase price reduced.

BMW Motorrad is celebrating a record-breaking year for new motorcycle registrations in the UK for 2014. The Motorcycle Industry Association has released official year-end registration figures for 2014 which show that BMW Motorrad UK has hit an all-time high for new model sales.

Sales of BMW Motorrad’s new models in 2014 increased by 15% (from 6,073 to 6,959), significantly outperforming the overall market which grew 10% year-on-year.

Additionally, the R 1200 GS is once again the country’s best-selling motorcycle over 125cc – for the fifth consecutive year. The R 1200 GS Adventure was in second place. Combined sales of the two variants make the R 1200 GS & Adventure the most popular powered two-wheeler overall.

The updated liquid-cooled R 1200 RT topped the touring motorcycle sales charts (as well as being fifth highest-selling model over 125cc), while new models such as the S 1000 R took the market by storm with excellent first-year sales performance.

The acclaimed BMW R NineT was so popular that the UK’s entire allocation was sold early in 2014 and production had to be increased in order to keep up with demand.

BMW Motorrad unveils new S 1000 XR and F 800 R at EICMA show in Milan

New adventure-sport and roadster models join the 2015 BMW Motorrad range.

BMW Motorrad has introduced two additional 2015 models at the EICMA Salone Internationale del Motociclo in Milan: the S 1000 XR adventure sports motorcycle and the updated F 800 R roadster.

The BMW S 1000 XR – all good things come in fours.
Following on from the S 1000 RR and HP4 superbikes as well as the S 1000 R roadster, BMW Motorrad is now unveiling the fourth member in the BMW Motorrad line-up of high-power motorcycles with straight-four-cylinder engines and a distinctly sporty bias. Building on the tantalising and unique mix of innovative technology, performance and safety already inherent to the existing models in this series, BMW Motorrad has taken the next step by bringing out the S 1000 XR, which offers this repertoire of core characteristics in a brand-new blend dubbed “adventure sport”. This encompasses dynamic touring qualities, sporty performance and high levels of comfort as well as outstanding everyday usability. In short, the new S 1000 XR serves up its own individual mix of sporting and touring flair at the same time as injecting a generous dose of emotion.Straight-four-cylinder engine for punchy adventure sport performance.
The straight-four-cylinder engine on the new BMW S 1000 XR is basically derived from the S 1000 R roadster. It has an output of 118 kW (160 hp) at 11,000 rpm and generates maximum torque of 112 Nm (83 lb-ft) at 9,250 rpm. This power unit produces torque in abundance, making it ideal for providing the punchy response at low and medium revs that riders seek when powering along country roads or carrying a passenger. The straight-four-cylinder unit combines tremendous pulling power and exhilarating acceleration with a high peak output, while offering the rider a usable rev range that spans over 10,000 rpm. This makes it just as adept at highly pleasurable touring as it is at sporty rides down winding country roads or holiday trips complete with passenger and luggage.

Two riding modes and ASC as standard as well as the option of Pro riding modes including Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro.
To enable the riding characteristics to be adapted to the prevailing road conditions as effectively as possible, the new S 1000 XR already comes with the “Rain” and “Road” riding modes as standard. The standard-fit Automatic Stability Control (ASC) ensures a high standard of riding safety by optimising traction. The new S 1000 XR can be equipped ex-works with the Pro riding modes option, which includes the additional riding modes “Dynamic” and “Dynamic Pro” along with Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and ABS Pro.

Innovative chassis with a new frame and Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment) as an option.
The chassis of the new S 1000 XR adventure sport bike is every bit as impressive as the ferocious power delivery of the four-in-line engine. Based on this model series’ existing design, it employs an aluminium-alloy perimeter frame in which the engine forms part of the load-bearing structure. Wheel suspension at the front and rear is handled by an adjustable upside-down fork and a double-sided swing arm with adjustable central spring strut respectively. The chassis geometry has been completely redefined in order to cater to the specific requirements of the XR. When fitted with the optional electronically controlled suspension system BMW Motorrad Dynamic ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), meanwhile, the new S 1000 XR takes riding safety, performance and comfort to even greater heights, while also promising adventure sport at its very finest.

ABS Pro available ex-works as part of the Pro riding modes option for even greater safety when braking in a banked position.
Whereas the standard ABS systems from BMW Motorrad to date have ensured an excellent standard of safety when braking while moving in a straight line, the optionally available ABS Pro feature now goes a step further to make braking while cornering safer as well by enabling ABS-assisted braking in a banked position. In such situations, ABS Pro prevents the wheels from locking up even when the brakes are applied sharply. This reduces abrupt changes in steering force, especially in response to panic braking, and thereby limits any undesirable righting of the bike. ABS Pro offers riders the benefit of increased braking and riding stability combined with optimum stopping power, even in corners.

The new S 1000 XR – style and function for both sport and adventuring.
The new BMW S 1000 XR fuses the characters and strengths of the BMW Motorrad GS, Touring and Sport models on a visual level as well to create a new breed of motorcycle tagged “adventure sport”. This is clearly mirrored in every design element and combines with the flawless ergonomics, ingenious wind and weather protection as well as the 20 – 30 mm increase in spring travel and greater ground clearance to make an impressive statement. Whether it’s mountain passes, a tour of the countryside, motorway riding or even rough sections of road – the new S 1000 XR handles it all with aplomb.

Highlights of the new BMW S 1000 XR:

  • Straight-four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 999 cc. Output 118 kW (160 hp) at 11,000 rpm, maximum torque of 112 Nm (83 lb-ft) at 9,250 rpm.
  • Dynamic, innovative design with sculptural surface styling.
  • BMW Motorrad ABS as standard (semi-integral, disengageable).
  • ABS Pro for even greater safety when braking in a banked position (as part of the Pro riding modes optional extra).
  • Automatic Stability Control (ASC) as standard for accelerating safely even in low-grip conditions.
  • Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) with banking sensor for supreme performance and active riding safety when accelerating (as part of the Pro riding modes optional extra).
  • Two riding modes that can be selected by the rider at the push of a button as standard (“Rain” and “Road”).

BMW F 800 R.

The new F 800 R. Sporty, agile, versatile.

The new F 800 R is the latest in the line of characterful parallel twin-cylinder motorcycles from BMW Motorrad. Consistent development of its all-round qualities has ensured the dynamic roadster is ready to delight owners with its sporty performance, agile handling and even greater versatility – all wrapped up in a dynamic package.

Power is sourced, as before, from a liquid-cooled four-valve twin-cylinder engine with 798 cc displacement. With output increasing to 66 kW (90 hp) at 8,000 rpm (up from 64 kW (87 hp) at 8,000 rpm) and shorter ratios for first and second gear, the parallel twin offers even greater sprinting ability while retaining the impressive pulling power, instantaneous responses and low fuel consumption familiar from the predecessor model. Peak torque remains 86 Nm (63 lb-ft) at 5,800 rpm.

The engaging riding experience on board the F 800 R is further enhanced by new suspension components and optimised ergonomics. For example, an upside-down fork now takes care of front suspension duties, while a hydraulic double-disc brake with radial brake callipers provides fade-resistant stopping power. A new seat fixed lower down (at 790 mm instead of the previous 800 mm), combined with new handlebars and rider foot pegs, creates even better ergonomics for the rider.

The design of the F 800 R – which is also pitched at novice riders – also provides a visual showcase for that extra rider engagement. With its newly designed fairings, radiator shields, front mudguard and wheels, plus a new range of colours, the sporty roadster cuts an extremely dynamic figure. The now symmetrical main headlight also gives it a distinctive “face”.

In keeping with the “Safety 360°” principle, the new F 800 R is fitted with ABS as standard. It can also be ordered with optional systems such as ASC (Automatic Stability Control) and ESA (Electronic Suspension Adjustment), ensuring it sets a new benchmark in the segment in terms of its safety performance and all-round qualities.

The new features of the BMW F 800 R:

• Higher output than its predecessor – 66 kW (90 hp) at 8,000 rpm (previously: 64 kW (87 hp) at 8,000 rpm).

• Modified ratios for first and second gear.

BMW Motorrad factory celebrates building 500,000th Boxer-powered GS motorcycle

New liquid-cooled R 1200 GS marks half a million milestone.
The 500,000th Boxer-powered GS model – a new R 1200 GS – has rolled off the production line at the BMW Motorrad factory. Construction of BMW motorcycles commenced at the Berlin-Spandau plant in 1969 and the first ever GS entered production in the autumn of 1980.
Since then, over three decades of GS motorcycles have been manufactured in Berlin and delivered all over the world. The Boxer-powered models, from the original R 80 G/S to the all-new R 1200 GS Adventure this year, have become icons in their own right.
What started as a revolutionary 798cc, 50bhp dual-purpose model has evolved into an iconic, genre-defining 1170cc adventure motorcycle, making 125bhp and offering riders state-of-the art technology and performance-enhancing aids, including on- and off-road ABS, traction control and semi-active suspension.
The Boxer-powered GS range changed the motorcycling landscape around the world, creating the adventure-sports category – now one of the fastest growing sectors – and breaking sales records along the way in the UK and Europe.
The liquid-cooled R 1200 GS was the UK’s best-selling motorcycle over 125cc in 2013, as well as the best-selling motorcycle outright in Europe. With over 25,000 registered worldwide, the first-ever liquid-cooled Boxer GS became BMW Motorrad’s fastest-selling new model in the company’s entire 90-year history.
Stephan Schaller, President of BMW Motorrad, said: “By combining street, off-road and everyday qualities, BMW Motorrad created the new travel enduro species with the R 80 G/S. The flat-twin GS became the synonym for this segment. The outstanding talents of the Boxer-powered GS models – ride dynamics, off-road qualities, comfort and endurance – have been continuously nurtured, developed and transferred very successfully to other BMW Motorrad model series.”Marc Sielemann, Head of the BMW Motorrad Berlin Plant, said: “As a plant it is a privilege for us to continue building on the successful history of the legendary flat-twin GS. With the precision-cooled drive unit, a new evolutionary stage was reached last year. Manufacturing half a million units underlines the fact that the Boxer GS represents a cornerstone of our motorcycle production more than ever before.”

The AirFlow suit (£655), meanwhile, is ultra-lightweight and boasts excellent ventilation. The Sport leather suit (£1175) also comes with numerous new features and is designed for riders who are looking for comfort alongside sporty looks and safety.

The new rugged Gravel boots (£255) are a replacement for the popular Santiago enduro-styled boot. The new water- and dirt-resistant AirFlow boot cover (£52) turns the AirFlow lightweight boot (£150) into an all-weather option.

For the Two in One gloves (£140), weather and temperature changes are no longer an issue thanks to a revolutionary dual-chamber lining system that allows these sporty gloves to simply adapt to the prevailing conditions and switch to being waterproof in seconds. The AirFlow summer gloves (£70) offer excellent ventilation and comfort, while remaining extremely light.

Coming in bright, instantly visible fluorescent colours, the AirShell (£350) and NeonShell (£350) jackets ensure extremely good visibility for riders. The popular Boulder jacket (£340) has been updated with a new look, while the BlackLeather jacket (£450) comes in a casual used look and is made of rugged water buffalo hide, combining retro style with modern protection.

The appeal of the FivePocket trousers (£175) lies in their laidback design, but without any compromise on the safety front. They may resemble a casual pair of jeans but are in fact fully-fledged motorcycle trousers. The functional Summer trousers (£175) in casual cargo look are ideal for summer rides with the zip off lower legs making the transition from bike trousers to casual shorts effortless.

The BMW Motorrad Rider Equipment range also features a comprehensive range of functional items. The new HeatUp vest (£160) takes cold weather comfort to the next level with a 12v heating system that works with BMW Motorrad motorcycles.

Fans of the BMW Motorrad brand are followers of fashion. Two new-for-2014 limited edition BMW Motorrad Style Collections offer high-quality clothing and cool accessories in the ‘logo’ and ‘vintage’ themes. The BMW Motorrad Logo collection is targeted at all those wishing to display their passion for BMW motorcycles through smart shirts, cool jackets and even items of luggage. BMW Motorrad Vintage collection presents a laidback feel and rugged garage look. From T-shirts to sunglasses all the way to tool rolls, sheer cool and style is the name of the game.
