Inaugural BMW Bespoke Build Winner Crowned

With over 10,000 votes cast across social media, the winner of the first ever BMW Bespoke Build has been announced: Chester Motorrad taking the honours with over 2,500 votes.

Eight custom BMW R nineT Racers were produced by eight Motorrad Retailers for the first-ever BMW Bespoke Build contest. Road legality was the only limitation imposed on the Retailers, their imaginations free to run wild and eight unique Racers were the result. With over 10,000 votes across social media, the contest was incredibly well received by the public.

With each of their Racers achieving over 2,000 votes, Chester Motorrad and Wollaston Motors Ltd were locked in a close battle for the win. Both Chester and Wollaston’s entries are visually very different, highlighting just how versatile a machine the retro R nineT Racer is in a customiser’s hands. From retro-inspired paint schemes to hand-crafted custom machines, the BMW Bespoke Build ran the gambit of designs and style options.

Chester Motorrad set out to do something they knew would be radically different to the competition, aiming to make their version of the R nineT Racer as aggressive as possible. Alongside the distinct rear section of the bike, a highlight is the fully hand built exhaust system – created in-house by one of the team’s technicians.

Under 400 votes split Chester Motorrad and Wollaston Motors Ltd when voting for the BMW Bespoke Build closed on 7 February 2018. With the voting so close, the decision has been made to display both bikes on the BMW Motorrad stand at the MCN London Show from 16 -18 February 2018.

Paul Hodgson, Sales Manager, Chester Motorrad: “We are so pleased to have taken home first place in the first BMW Bespoke Build. We have to thank everyone in the public for voting for us, it was very close at the top in terms of votes throughout. Our team did such a fantastic job, there was an incredible amount of work for our technicians to fabricate all the custom parts themselves and resolving a couple of issues we made for ourselves because of the rather radical design. I am very pleased with how the bike turned out, it’s exactly as we had imagined – a very different, aggressive bike which sounds incredible.”

The podium was completed by Chandlers Bikes, who received the third highest number of votes. All entrants of the inaugural BMW Bespoke Build can be seen here.

BMW Motorrad Bespoke Bike Build

Ten BMW Motorrad Retailers prepare to transform ten R nineT Racers into custom dreams as they compete for victory in the BMW Bespoke Bike Build.

Step into a BMW Retailer and you’re met by a group of people who are hugely passionate about all things BMW Motorrad. From classic bikes to the latest TFT-equipped GSAs, the BMW Retailer staff love them all. Their passion is surpassed only by their incredible bike-related talents.

To let the Retailers show off all their skills and creativity, BMW Motorrad UK have created the BMW Bespoke Build contest. The R nineT Racer forms the base for the ten Retailers contesting, the Racer is a perfect blend of retro-cool and modern technology for a custom competition. It immediately gives Retailers a style to follow and potentially makes those who stray away from the conventional even more striking.

Whether it’s wearing an expert paint job or has been completely modified with carbon fibre, all customisations are welcome additions to the Racer in the BMW Bespoke Bike Build. The rules are simple; entrants must use the retro-superbike inspired R nineT Racer as their base and the final version must be homologated for road use after two and a half months of custom work.

Past custom bike displays at London’s Tobacco Docks and at Motorcycle Live have potential to give the contestants a spark to start with, but the ideas must be all their own. Beyond this, creativity is each of the Retailers’ only limitation.

Our Retailers have been working away over the winter months and are already making good progress on their builds. More updates and progress shots will be shared as the end of the challenge draws closer and closer.

Once all ten entries are in, it’s time for the difficult part – picking a winner. To help do this, BMW Motorrad will open voting to the public before the winner is decided and announced in February 2018. Alongside the accolades, the winning Retailer’s Racer will be on display for the public to see at various events.

BMW Motorrad UK will be showcasing nine of the new models for the 2017 model range at participating BMW Motorrad Retailer Centres on February 25, as part of its 2017 New Model Launch event.

After a fantastic 2016, which culminated with the R 1200 GS Adventure and the R 1200 GS topping the UK sales charts (over 125 cc), BMW Motorrad is kicking 2017 off in style, offering customers the opportunity to test ride all of the new models at the event.

Nine new and update models involved in the 2017 New Model Launch include:

  • BMW R 1200 GS Rallye
  • BMW R 1200 GS Exclusive
  • BMW R nineT Racer
  • BMW R nine T Pure
  • BMW S 1000 R
  • BMW S 1000 RR
  • BMW F 800 R
  • BMW F 800 GT

Continuing to improve upon the already successful formula, the R 1200 GS family has grown to include the R 1200 GS Rallye and the R 1200 GS Exclusive model. The Exclusive features unique gold brake calipers, a distinct highlight amongst the dark silver and deep black of the bike. No terrain is too much for the Rallye, even with standard equipment, and a sport windshield and rally seat ensures riders are always in the perfect position.

‘Heritage’ remains the fastest growing sub-brand in the BMW Motorrad range with the R nineT Pure making its debut alongside an upgraded R nineT and the new R nineT Racer. For those wanting a unique motorcycle they can make their own, the Pure is a perfect base.

The heavily-revised S 1000 R Roadster gets a brand-new chassis along with more power and a host of technical enhancements for 2017, with the class-leading BMW S 1000 RR also managing to keep the same power and torque figures, even with the latest legally required emissions controls.

BMW Motorrad UK brings full 2017 range to MCN London Show

Complete range of 2017 models on display at the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle Show.

BMW Motorrad UK will have its full line-up of 2017 models on display at the Carole Nash MCN London Motorcycle show from 17 to 19 February at the Excel, giving enthusiasts who missed Motorcycle Live a chance to get up close to the new model range.

The reaction to the 2017 model range at Motorcycle Live was overwhelmingly positive, with new additions to the Heritage range proving parituclarly popular. Alongside the Heritage range will be heavily-revised versions of the R 1200 GS, in Rallye and Exclusive variants.

The R nineT Racer and the R nineT Urban G/S will also be at the show, joined by the raw R nineT Pure, all three offering a distinct look and feel. The original R nineT is also set to be on display, featuring changes for Euro 4.

Following its recent press launch in Spain, interest around the R 1200 GS Rallye and Exclusive continues to grow. Both variants build on the already formidable and class-defining R 1200 GS and GS Adventure machines; the two best-selling bikes (over 125cc) in the UK in 2016.

Visitors to the show will be able to get a closer look at the BMW K 1600 GT and LE model also launched in Spain, which received equally glowing reviews from the press.

Upgrades and technical refinements abound in the S 1000 range. The BMW S 1000 RR ended 2016 as the UK’s most-popular supersport bike and continues to top group tests. Perhaps the most notable changes come to the S 1000 R, with a new exhaust, chassis and updated quick-shifter all gracing the now Euro 4-compliant roadster.

Both the lightweight BMW G 310 R and BMW G 310 GS will again be on the stand, the pairing proving extremely popular at previous shows.

The entire F 800 range has been given technical updates with the F 800 RF 800 GS and GS Adventure model along with the F 800 GT tourer, all will be on display at the Excel show.

The ground-breaking BMW C evolution electric scooter range will also be on show in 2017 specification. Both scooters are now an even more attractive prospect thanks to a government OLEV grant amounting to a £1500 discount off the purchase price.

Having revealed their 2017 British Superbike rider line up at Motorcycle Live, the Tyco BMW team are set to show their colours for the new season in London.

BMW Motorrad UK’s National Marketing Manager Scott Grimsdall said: “The London Motorcycle show is another exciting opportunity for us to show the entire 2017 line-up of bikes and for those who missed out on Motorcycle Live it’s another chance to see our new bikes.

“We are incredibly excited about the 2017 model range and with updated versions of popular bikes like the R 1200 GS being joined by the growing Heritage range, we have a wider range of bikes than ever.”

The BMW Motorrad stand is M15.

BMW C evolution receives OLEV grant

BMW C evolution qualifies for £1,500 subsidy as part of £35 million government incentive.

New government initiative to boost electric vehicle sales now includes the BMW C evolution.

BMW’s revolutionary C evolution electric scooter has qualified for a £1,500 grant thanks to a new government initiative aimed at further boosting ultra-low emissions vehicle sales.

The new £35 million package was recently unveiled by Transport Minister John Hayes, with funding going towards grants for buyers along with a commitment to increase the number of chargepoints on streets and places of work.

An initial £3.75 million is being made available for motorcycle and scooter riders, providing them with up to 20 per cent off the cost of an electric motorcycle or scooter. Buyers will be able to claim a maximum discount of £1,500, reducing the cost of the current standard BMW C evolution price to £10,730 from £12,230. The price of the new, longer-range BMW C evolution Plus will be reduced to £12,000 from the current £13,500 with the grant deduction.

Transport Minister John Hayes said: “No matter what mode of transport you need – a scooter to get to work, a car or a van to run your business – we are here to help you do it with zero emissions.

“The number of ultra-low emission vehicles on our roads are at record levels and new registrations have risen by 250 per cent in just over two years.

“We are committing £35 million to help install new chargepoints and offer new grants as we aim for nearly all cars and vans on our roads to be zero emission by 2050.”

The funding includes:

  • Up to £10 million funding for chargepoints outside workplaces and homes where there is no off-street parking
  • Launch of an initial £3.75 million scheme to encourage uptake of zero emission motorcycles and scooters
  • £2 million awarded to public and private sector organisations to deploy hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
  • Next steps of a £20 million competition that will help councils roll out chargepoints for ultra-low emission taxis

BMW R 1200 GS range tops the sales charts in 2016

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 GS confirmed as the UK’s best-selling bikes (over 125 cc) in 2016.

The BMW R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 GS were the two most popular bikes in the UK in 2016 (over 125 cc), while there was further success for a number of other models in the BMW range, several of which were best-sellers in their respective classes.

For the first time ever in the UK the BMW R 1200 GS Adventure outsold the R 1200 GS with 1,525 total UK registrations, compared with 1,462 for the standard R 1200 GS model. The combined sales of the R 1200 GS models were 2,987, an impressive 1,296 total registrations ahead its nearest competitor.

2016 sales highlights:

  • The BMW S 1000 XR was top six in class with 842 registrations.
  • Three BMW models featured in the top-six best-selling Adventure Sport bikes.
  • The performance-focussed BMW S 1000 RR continues to dominate the Supersport category, finishing the year as the highest-selling machine in its class with 658 registrations.
  • Similar sales success saw the R 1200 RS become the second best-selling Sports Touring machine.

BMW Motorrad UK is looking forward to an equally successful 2017, as 15 new and revised models will be available to customers. There are two new variants of BMW’s all-conquering R 1200 GS – namely the Rallye and Exclusive – while the Heritage range continues to grow, with the addition of the R NineT Racer, R NineT Pure and R NineT Urban G/S.

Scott Grimsdall, BMW Motorrad UK National Marketing and PR Manager: “The R 1200 GS Adventure and R 1200 GS have again proven to be a favourite with the British public. The GS is an iconic brand and has always enjoyed strong sales, but the success of the XR, RS, RT and RR is particularly pleasing.

“To finish the year topping the Adventure Sport, Touring and Supersports categories highlights the diversity and popularity of our range. We are constantly developing our bikes and offerings for customers and with a full range of new bikes for 2017, we’re looking forward to another exciting and promising year ahead.”

BMW Motorrad reveals VISION NEXT 100 Concept

Visionary motorcycle concept reveals the potential future of motorcycling.

BMW Motorrad this week revealed the fourth in a series of concept vehicles as it celebrates the centenary of BMW Group and the manufacturer’s vision for the next 100 years of mobility.

Liberated from the need to wear a helmet and protective clothing, the rider is able to enjoy the forces: acceleration, wind and nature and in touch with the surrounding world, savouring every moment.

The design of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 represents the essence of the motorcycle: the perfect synthesis between human and machine.

Every detail is of the highest quality and the design incorporates all the most striking visual aspects of BMW Motorrad motorcycles across the ages. These elements, however, have a contemporary twist, both visually and in terms of function.

Technical highlights

  • Self-balancing
  • Zero-emissions electric powertrain
  • Fully-connected, intelligent safety systems

The Great Escape

“The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 embodies the BMW Group’s vision of biking in a connected world – an analogue experience in a digital age. Motorcycling is about escaping from the everyday: the moment you straddle your bike, you are absolutely free. Your bike is The Great Escape,” says Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design at BMW Motorrad, outlining the core principles underlying his brand’s Vision Vehicle.

The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 stands for the ultimate riding experience. Liberated from the need to wear a helmet and protective clothing, the rider is able to enjoy the forces. Acceleration, wind and nature as in touch with the surrounding world, savouring every moment. The design of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 represents the essence of the motorcycle: the perfect synthesis between human and machine. Every detail is of the highest quality and the design incorporates all the most striking visual aspects of BMW Motorrad bikes across the ages. These elements, however, have a contemporary twist, both visually and in terms of function.

The iconic elements in the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 make it immediately recognisable as a “genuine BMW” and include the black frame triangle, white lines and classic, boxer engine forms. The bike itself, however, is powered by a zero-emissions solution.

The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 unites the past of the BMW Motorrad brand with its future and is a powerful expression of both.

The frame triangle – a classic icon reinvented

The black frame triangle of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 is a deliberate reference to the first ever BMW motorcycle, the R32, made in 1923. On the vision bike, however, it has been reinterpreted to form a functional sculpture linking the front and rear wheels with a dynamic sweep. Bearings and joints are nowhere to be seen; instead the frame appears as a single, integrated whole.

Viewed from the side, the frame of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 lends it the character of a naked bike, with ergonomics to match and a seat in the roadster position. The clever arrangement of surfaces protects the rider from wind and weather as effectively as a full fairing. The surface of the frame is covered in matt black textile, its silky sheen and fine lines highlighting the characteristic forms and representing a contemporary reinterpretation of this classic BMW detail. The BMW logo is optimally displayed on the dark frame. It is illuminated in the familiar blue and white colours while driving.

Flexframe – frame-assisted steering

The Flexframe appears as a single, integrated whole that extends from the front to the rear wheel of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100. Being flexible, it allows the bike to be steered without the various joints found on today’s motorcycles. Turning the handlebar adjusts the entire frame, changing the direction of the bike. The amount of strength needed to steer depends on the situation: at standstill, the Flexframe allows a light steering whereas at higher speeds it remains very rigid.

Powertrain – inspired by the BMW boxer engine

In the middle of the triangle frame sits a style feature and historical reminder: the power unit. Designed and created in the image of the traditional BMW boxer engine, it actually consists of a zero-emissions drive unit. Its outward appearance changes depending on the circumstances: when the bike is resting, the power unit is compact, extending outwards only when the bike sets off, to enhance aerodynamics and protect the rider from the elements. Its polished aluminium finish confirms the superior quality of this component.

Minimalist form, maximum quality of details

The slender-looking BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 clearly expresses its qualities as a riding machine. The front is minimalist in design and enhanced with high-quality details. Integrated into the frame above the front wheel is a large metal reflector incorporating the two vertically positioned, U-shaped elements that make up the daytime running light. It also acts as a wind deflector and, in combination with the small, integrated windshield, helps to optimise the air flows.

Body elements such as the seat, upper frame cover and wings are made of carbon.

Beneath the seat shell, two fine, red, illuminated strips form the rear light and indicators – picking up on the typical double-C form of the rear lights on today’s BMW Motorrad bikes – but with a new, futuristic twist.

Damping is provided by the tyres, whose variable tread actively adjusts to suit ground conditions and ensure the best possible grip in any situation.

Analogue elements in the digital age

Overall, displays, cables and buttons are a rare sight on the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100. But amid the clear forms of its front is one element that immediately stands out: a red rocker-switch on the right-hand end of the handlebar. This obviously mechanical element blocks or releases the throttle grip and is a homage to the analogue days of original biking.

The hand levers with their outward-facing joints are also a reminder of days gone by.

BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100:

What kind of world will be home to the motorcycle of the future?

“Normally, when we develop a motorcycle, we tend to think 5 to 10 years in advance. On this occasion, we looked much further ahead and found the experience especially exciting. There are some very attractive prospects. I firmly believe the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 sets out a coherent future scenario for the BMW Motorrad brand,” explains Edgar Heinrich.

When designing the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100, the team was thinking decades in advance. In tomorrow’s world, connectivity and digitalisation will be all-encompassing. Most vehicles will be driverless, and life will be organised largely by digital services. More and more of the world’s population will be living in urban areas.

Digital technologies for an analogue experience

Building on the benefits of the digital world, the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 takes the analogue riding experience to a completely new level. The unique sensation of freedom is made possible by intelligent connectivity between rider, bike and the outside world – a combination that also allows the prediction of critical situations on the roads. In conjunction with the active assistance systems, these connected elements help keep riders of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 in complete control of their ride. As well as anticipating what lies ahead and alerting the user when action is needed, they offer active rider protection and will consign the helmets and body protectors of today to the history books.

“Self-balancing” – active, intelligent assistant systems

In certain situations, the active assistance systems of the future will also enhance stability and safety by automatically balancing the motorcycle, both out on the road and when stationary. Novice riders will benefit from additional guidance in all riding situations and from a bike that will never tip over.

The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 rights itself while even stationary, remaining upright when the rider has dismounted. The balancing systems also work out on the road to ensure a particularly agile and dynamic riding experience with even lighter handling, which seasoned riders will appreciate, and all the benefits of assistance systems to enhance their capabilities even further. The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 helps every biker become more proficient and enjoy an even more positive riding experience. Every trip becomes a journey of freedom, from beginning to end.

The Digital Companion – Connected. Ubiquitous. Discreet.

When combined, the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 bike and the special rider’s gear that has been designed to accompany it form a single functional unit: a Digital Companion that provides the situational information and active support the rider needs. But because biking is essentially about the experience, the Digital Companion remains in the background: though constantly active, it works away unnoticed until required to issue an alert via the user interface or provide active assistance, for instance. Unless the rider or circumstances require it, the Digital Companion remains silent.

“A key point with the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 was to make sure the constant digital presence doesn’t undermine the analogue riding experience. The display and operating concept works so subtly that the rider can enjoy an entirely natural biking experience, trusting the bike completely and enjoying complete freedom and ease. As interface designers, our job is to deliver the right amount of the right information at the best possible time and place,” explains Holger Hampf, Head of User Experience at the BMW Group.

The visor – the right information at the right time

Information exchanges between rider and bike take place largely via the visor. This essentially consists of a pair of data glasses that extends across the wearer’s entire field of vision. As well as providing wind protection, it shows relevant data in one of four designated display areas. These are controlled by the rider’s eye movements: looking up or down changes the content that appears, and looking straight ahead switches the information off completely, leaving the rider to focus even more fully on biking experience. Information is only projected onto the visor on request, or to alert the rider to the fact that action is needed

“The bike has the full range of connected data from its surroundings and a set of intelligent systems working in the background, so it knows exactly what lies ahead. By collating the data it has gathered, it can suggest ideal lines and banking angles, or warn riders of hazards ahead,” Hampf continues. When suggesting lines and angles, the Digital Companion appears in the lower third of the field of view, represented by an upturned triangle from which two horizontal lines extend outwards. Like the display in an aeroplane cockpit, this symbol indicates the current banking angle and ideal lines. If the bike’s current position does not match what is suggested, the rider can correct it as necessary. If he or she responds too late or not at all, the bike will correct itself. The Digital Companion’s advice not only helps novices to learn more about what they and their bikes can do. It also supports experienced riders by allowing them to challenge themselves and continuously improve their skills.

Looking upwards activates the rear-view function in the visor, allowing the rider to see what is going on on the road behind. Lowering the eyes to normal levels opens a menu from which the rider can select an option by pointing a finger. Looking further down opens the map view showing the rider’s chosen route.

Smart. Active. Flexible – rider’s equipment

The rider’s gear accompanying the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 is integral to the unique overall experience. In classic black and white, the airy suit enhances the sense of freedom and is both fashion statement and weather-wear. Depending on conditions, it warms or cools the user. While the diagonal zipper across the chest is reminiscent of traditional motorcycle clothing, the flexible, banded structure of the suit and shoes is inspired by the muscle areas of the human body and provides body support and relief whenever needed.

At higher speeds, the neck section inflates to provide extra support for the upper vertebrae and improve overall comfort. Variable openings offer additional ventilation. Unlike present-day suits, however, the futuristic outfit for riders of the BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 offers no safety features, because the bike’s intelligent assistance systems make them superfluous. Instead, sensors in the suit keep track of the wearer’s pulse rate and body temperature and provide the right level of heat or cold. The suit also delivers navigation instructions via the vibrating elements in the arms and legs, and alerts the rider when the banking angle is becoming critical. Rider and machine form a single functional unit to offer a more intense riding experience than ever before. Edgar Heinrich sums up: “The BMW Motorrad VISION NEXT 100 unites the best of both worlds – digital and analogue – for the ultimate emotional experience: The Great Escape.”

BMW Motorrad unveils six motorcycles at Intermot.

Two new models and various updates herald the new season following press conference at Europe’s first major International show.

BMW Motorrad held a press conference today at the International Motorcycle, Scooter and E-Bike Fair (Intermot) in Cologne to unveil two new motorcycles plus several extensively redesigned models.

From the BMW Motorrad worlds of Heritage, Tour, Roadster, Adventure and Sport there are two new motorcycles, as well as several models that have undergone substantial redesigns; all revealed for the first time.

BMW R nineT Racer and R nineT Pure
New for 2017 are the BMW R nineT Racer and the R nineT Pure; both combine the classic concept of a purist roadster with authentic style and modern performance.

Bringing a new, sporty look and riding experience to the BMW Heritage range, the R nineT Racer deliberately takes design inspiration from half-faired sports bikes of the past, but using contemporary technology to ensure the ride is sporty, fun and engaging.

The new BMW R nineT Pure has been stripped back to absolute essentials and is set to become the very essence of a purist, classic roadster. Customers then have accessory options available to them to create their own truly individual roadster.

UK OTR prices start from:
R nineT Racer – £10,675
R nineT Pure – £9,900

BMW S 1000 R/RR/XR
With the launch of the BMW S 1000 XR in autumn 2014, BMW Motorrad offered its own new interpretation of the sports to touring range, not least adding a powerful dose of emotion into the mix. Detail changes for 2017 include enhanced power output and increased payload capacity.

The fact that the S 1000 RR is the Superstock racer’s first choice speaks volumes. For 2017 the bike will come with solo configuration as standard, with passenger set-up as an ‘ex-works’ order choice, in addition to enhanced rider electronics aids. The RR also has available a complete programme of race-focused electronic upgrades available as options, including the newly available ABS Pro which also activates the ABS system as required when the bike is leant over in corners.

As usual, an extensive programme of optional equipment and motorcycle accessories are available for customisation of the new BMW S 1000 R/RR/XR models.

All the above models are now EU4 compliant.

UK OTR prices start from:
S 1000 R – £10,605
S 1000 RR – £13,850
S 1000 XR – £12,450

BMW K 1600 GT
Regarded as the lightest and most compact 6-cylinder in-line engine for motorcycles, the updates to this Grand Tourer give the motorcycle more sophistication and comfort than ever before. The riding experience has been significantly enhanced and with the new reverse assist, manoeuvring the motorcycle has never been easier.

UK OTR price starts from:
K 1600 GT – £17,040

BMW Motorrad launches Airbag Jacket Street Air Dry by Alpinestars

BMW Motorrad is launching the BMW Motorrad Street Air by Alpinestars, an advanced airbag system offering comprehensive upper body protection and the freedom to ride a motorbike in both on- and offroad situations.

The technology adopted from the current Alpinestars Tech-Air® street airbag system – a system requiring no motorbike-mounted sensors. The airbag system of Alpinestars utilizes a sophisticated algorithm that detects imminent danger with the greatest precision and inflates the full upper body airbag to provide a highly effective crash protection system, ahead of the first impact.

The BMW Motorrad Street Air Dry by Alpinestars textile riding jacket is designed to interconnect with the Alpinestars airbag system vest and is an essential component for the system to be fully operational.

It offers instantaneous inflatable upper body protection to the back, kidneys, chest and shoulders – the most exposed areas in a crash. It is also fully independent, incorporating its sensors close to the rider’s or passenger’s body means the airbag activates without the need for a triggering wireless signal to be sent from the bike.

This jacket is the first safety product to be launched under an exclusive agreement, between BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars and is available for both female and male customers in different colorways from October 2016.

BMW Motorrad demonstrates C evolution scooter at CENEX 2016

CENEX is the perfect opportunity for BMW Motorrad to demonstrate the commitment the company has made to a low carbon and sustainable future for two-wheel transportation.

BMW Motorrad was one of the first manufacturers to offer a completely electrically powered two-wheeler in the form of the well-received C Evolution scooter which was launched in 2014.

The C Evolution is 100% electrically-powered and shares battery technology with the BMW i3 car. It produces a peak output of 48 bhp (35 kW) and 72 Nm of torque at the crankshaft makes for 600 Nm of torque at the rear wheel in practice, enabling acceleration from 0 – 50 km/h in 2.7 seconds. What’s more there is a range of 100 kilometres in urban setting, four riding modes and energy recuperation during braking. The electric drive in the C evolution ensures a whole new sensation.

BMW expects this scooter to be eligible for the soon-to-be-announced OLEV grant which would see £1500 cut from the current retail price of £13,500. Details of the forthcoming OLEC grant will be released in the coming weeks.

BMW i was the technological inspiration behind the C evolution battery. The modules are identical to those used in the BMW i3 and are produced at the same plant in Dingolfing. The battery is charged using the integrated charging device – either at a regular household power socket or at a charging station. When the battery is completely flat, the charging time will ideally be approximately three hours (220 V, 16 A). A charge level of 80 % is reached after just 2:15 hours.

Typically BMW: design that embodies the future.

The styling of the C evolution is inspiring and futuristic yet still instantly recognisable as being typical of BMW Motorrad. LED turn indicators, LED lights, TFT display and the paint finishes demonstrate innovative power. Meanwhile the typical split face at the front clearly reflects the maxi scooter’s BMW Motorrad genes.

CENEX is a Low Carbon Vehicle Event that runs over 14/15 September 2016 at Millbrook Proving ground, Leics.  http://www.cenex-lcv.co.uk/2016/

BMW Motorrad announces model updates for 2016

New Dynamic Brake Light introduced and ABS Pro comes to three further models.

BMW Motorrad has announced a number of 2016 model year updates including the new Dynamic Brake Light, a special-edition model and new colour options.

Dynamic Brake Light.

As part of BMW Motorrad’s Safety 360° strategy, Dynamic Brake Light has been created as a passive safety feature. The system, which is integrated into the BMW advanced motorcycle braking system ABS Pro, operates in two stages.

If the rider brakes from over 50km/h, the rear brake light flashes at a rate of 5Hz, making the motorcycle as visible as possible to other road users.

Additionally, if the speed drops below 14km/h then the hazard warning lights are automatically activated, before being switched off once the rider accelerates back up to 20km/h.

To see video of Dynamic Brake Light in action, click here.

BMW ABS Pro.

BMW Motorrad’s cornering braking system ABS Pro, which debuted as a factory-fit option on the 2015 S 1000 XR, will be available to order on the 2016 R 1200 GS and R 1200 GS Adventure.
