Harley-Davidson UK shares bikers’ insights into riding

Harley-Davidson UK shares bikers’ insights into riding as an aid to mental wellbeing in the run up to world mental health day 2020

In a series of video shorts created by Harley-Davidson UK, motorcycle riders from all walks of life have shared their personal insights into how biking has helped them to maintain mental wellness and cope with difficult times in their lives. The series has been shared ahead of World Mental Health Day 2020 to demonstrate how two wheels can provide escape and freedom in many different ways.

The six-part series includes former professional athletes coping with early retirement, women whose lives have been irreversibly changed by serious accidents and injuries, a male model who has found freedom from addiction and a second male model whose carefree life is now just a distant memory after becoming a new parent for the first time during lockdown isolation. Each of them has talked openly about their struggles to find balance and the feelings of freedom that even just a short amount of time on a motorcycle gives them.

Shaina West, stuntwoman
An accident five years ago turned Shaina’s life upside down in more ways than she could have imagined. Within a few months she had lost her job, her relationship and her confidence. Having already been diagnosed with chronic anxiety, she decided to fight back, reinventing herself as a martial arts-skilled, motorcycle-riding stuntwoman.

Iwan Thomas, former Olympian & TV presenter
Forced retirement in your early 20s after being at the top of your game as a Team GB athlete can be difficult to deal with but, given his early success, Iwan felt ashamed to talk about feeling low and was left feeling isolated. Biking has always been his escape.

Vanessa Ruck, social media influencer
After being hit by a car while out cycling in 2014, the physical injuries Vanessa sustained threatened to completely change her active lifestyle. Unable to enjoy her usual adrenaline sports, she turned to motorcycling as a new way to enjoy the thrill of freedom and being outdoors.

Ricki Hall, model
Living life one day at a time has become increasingly important to Ricki since choosing sobriety. Riding helps him to live in the moment and is an important part of the structure that helps him maintain balance in his life.

Christian Williams, model
Just a year ago, Christian felt young and carefree, picking up his girlfriend on his motorcycle for dates and using two wheels to escape the pressure of city life, but the arrival of his first child, son Blake, during Covid-19 lockdown has changed his life in many ways. The one constant has been his use of two wheels to help clear his head, when needed.

Tommy Brady, former Olympian
A focused mindset and training twice a day were characteristics of Tommy’s life as a Team GB athlete, but early retirement provided more time to think than he had ever experienced in his adult life. Learning to ride is part of his journey of reconnecting with himself and the planet.

“Dark Suit”: the perfect entry into the Ducati Scrambler 1100 PRO family

“Dark Suit”: the perfect entry into the Ducati Scrambler 1100 PRO family with the new Dark version.

Ducati presents the new Ducati Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO, the entry model to the 1100 range of the “Land of Joy”. Made with the aim of fully transmitting some typical elements of the Ducati Scrambler brand, such as purity, essentiality and a sense of freedom, the 1100 Dark PRO model is available in Dark Stealth colour and constitutes a perfect starting point for a customization that indulges the creativity and personal taste of its owner.

The Ducati Scrambler 1100 range represents the ideal choice for those who love to travel not only in the city, but also outside urban centres, perhaps in the company of a passenger, thanks to the 1,079 cc engine characterized by a generous torque available from low revs and the 15-litre tank that allows you to tackle even the longest journeys with comfort.

The Ducati Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO has the same iconic and original design as the other two models in the range, the Ducati Scrambler 1100 PRO and Sport PRO, and stands out from its “big brothers” for its matt black colour with natural anodized aluminium parts, as well as its customization with classic style rear view mirrors.

In terms of electronics, the new entry of the “Land of Joy” is equipped – just like the other models of the 1100 PRO family – with Ducati Traction Control (DTC), specially calibrated for this model, and ABS Cornering, which guarantees maximum safety and agility in all types of turns. In addition, the three standard Riding Modes (Active, Journey and City) also help less experienced motorcyclists to find the right balance in the use of electronic components, choosing their own riding style.

The new Ducati Scrambler 1100 Dark PRO is available in all Ducati dealerships and Scrambler Camps starting from October 2020 in Europe. For more information visit the dedicated section of the Scrambler Ducati website.

The 2021 KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY & KTM 890 ADVENTURE R Open New Horizons

Two stunning new KTM ADVENTURE machines are here to let riders #AdventureHarder and faster than ever before thanks to a series of upgrades and race-inspired specs. The exclusive 2021 KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY and the updated KTM 890 ADVENTURE R capitalize on KTM’s achievements in the racing environment to embolden the brand’s prestige in the Travel sector.

Two years ago, KTM funneled track experience, premium technology and race-inspired design into some of the most versatile and exciting Adventure motorcycles to roll off the brand’s production lines. As a result, the KTM 790 ADVENTURE line-up quickened the pulse in the midweight segment. For 2021 and beyond, KTM is raising heart rates further with the launch of the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY and KTM 890 ADVENTURE R machines; a pair of new bikes based on new engine platforms with more power and torque, which are ready for extreme escapes off the beaten track.

In the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY, KTM is crafting one of the most desirable Adventure offerings in any catalog thanks to a series of components and settings derived from the efforts of the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Rally team. The data recorded across landscapes around the world has been analyzed and applied directly to the form of the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY.

Top of the range WP Pro Components ensure all-action, fully adjustable suspension while the power output of the new 4-stroke, twin, DOHC, Euro5-ready engine is boosted by an ultra-light Akrapovic silencer. The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY is a top of the range, specialized motorcycle for the hardcore Adventurer with a raft of niche details like specific chassis race settings, rally footpegs (wider, lighter and mud-free), straight seat, clear screen and winglets, racing graphics along with Quickshifter+ and RALLY ride mode as standard.

KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY – MODEL HIGHLIGHTS

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R improves and accelerates the riding sensation that many came to love with the KTM 790 ADVENTURE model family. The new engine generates 105 hp and 100 Nm of torque, that is 10 hp and 12 Nm more than the bike’s smaller brother. The crankshaft features 20% more rotating mass and the overall effect of the engineering around the powerplant means a more stable and consistent output, noticeable with low RPM torque. The added mass also means added cornering stability for long distance riding on the throttle. Fully adjustable WP XPLOR suspension, overhauled ABS software and new traction control algorithms are just three aspects that mold the KTM 890 ADVENTURE R as the company’s refined definition of an exhilarating ‘allrounder’.

Joachim Sauer, KTM Product Manager Travel: “We are lucky in at least two ways with the unveiling of our new KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY and R models. Firstly, to be able to count on the high standards and excellent collaboration with our multi-title winner Rally team. It’s very cool to be able to use their work and their components and plug it straight into our production bikes. Secondly, we’re excited by the fact we’re providing a new riding experience. The increased performance in addition to the extra rotating mass are really transforming the feeling in low rpm, with the new bikes being even more stable and efficient for the long travels. I’m pretty sure KTM ADVENTURE riders will feel the difference as soon as they get on their saddles for any kind of riding adventure.”

The exclusive KTM 890 ADVENTURE R RALLY is available in limited quantities and can be pre-ordered on ktm.com.

The KTM 890 ADVENTURE R will be arriving at KTM authorized dealers from November 2020 onwards. For more info visit www.ktm.com.

Ducati announces the world’s first motorcycle equipped with front and rear radar technology

Front radar

Ducati announces the entry into production of the world’s first motorcycle equipped with front and rear radar technology: the new Multistrada V4.

Production of the Multistrada V4 has begun at the Ducati factory in Borgo Panigale: the first motorcycle to use front and rear radar technology. The Multistrada V4 marks an epochal turning point for the Bologna-based motorcycle manufacturer and will be officially presented on 4 November.

For the fourth generation of the Multistrada, Ducati has developed a new, light and compact V4 engine, designed to meet the needs required for “adventouring” use without neglecting emotion and sportiness. The complete redesign made it possible to reach record-breaking maintenance intervals for the world of two wheels. All the details of this new engine will be revealed on 15 October.

Ducati brings radars on production bikes, confirming what was anticipated in 2018 ( link to the press release of April 2018 here). The adoption of these systems promises to be a true revolution for the world of two wheels, marking a new level of excellence in terms of comfort and riding assistance, especially on long motorway journeys.

Radars are advanced aid systems capable of supporting and making riding more comfortable thanks to the ability to reconstruct the reality surrounding the motorcycle. Ducati’s interest in this type of systems dates back to 2016, when the Company worked in collaboration with the Department of Electronics, Information and Bioengineering of the Politecnico di Milano to experiment with this type of systems. This first experience has confirmed the applicability of this kind of technology to vehicles on two wheels, and has pushed Ducati to the creation of a complete package of riding assistance using two radars that, within four years, has been developed and produced in close cooperation with Bosch, a top-level technology partner, and sees its first application on the new Multistrada V4.

Each radar has compact dimensions (70 x 60 x 28 mm, similar to a modern action camera) and integrates perfectly into the bike, weighing only 190 grams.

The radar positioned in the front of the vehicle controls the operation of the ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), which by means of controlled braking and acceleration automatically adjusts the distance (selectable on four levels) from other vehicles when riding at a speed between 30 and 160 km/h. This car-derived system has been evolved and developed according to the dynamics and ergonomics of a two-wheeled vehicle. In particular, the authority of the system in terms of deceleration and acceleration has been limited in order to ensure the rider can maintain constant control of the vehicle in any situation. The system allows for more comfortable riding, especially on long motorway journeys.

Rear radar

The rear radar, on the other hand, is able to detect and report vehicles positioned in the so-called blind spot, i.e. the area not visible either directly by the rider or through the rear-view mirror. The BSD (Blind Spot Detection) system also signals the approaching from behind of vehicles at high speed.

To underline the technical-scientific value of the research project, carried out jointly by Ducati engineers and researchers and undergraduates from the Politecnico di Milano, a patent application relating to the control algorithms of this system was filed in May 2017. In June 2017, a scientific publication was presented at the IEEE – Intelligent Vehicles Symposium (IV) in Redondo Beach, California.

Kawasaki unveils a trio of 2021 twins

Kawasaki Versys 650

Following the announcement of new season colours for the popular Vulcan S, the remaining three models in the 2021 twin-cylinder 650cc range have been unveiled.

Each a standout bike in its class, Kawasaki’s venerable water-cooled, cassette gearbox equipped 650 twin engine once again powers new iterations of the Ninja 650, Versys 650 and Z650 for the coming season.

That means for riders who prefer mid-weight ‘All Roads, One Bike’ style machines, the Versys will now be available in Candy Lime Green / Metallic Spark Black, Pearl Blizzard White / Metallic Spark Black or Metallic Moondust Gray / Metallic Spark Black.

Equipped with distinctive long travel suspension, the Versys is ready to tackle the city, its suburbs and any distance demanded thanks to a confidence inspiring upright riding position and the ability to add clean mount 56l accessory panniers that utilise a single key operating the ignition, fuel cap and seat lock too.

Kawasaki Ninja 650

Comfortable attacking not simply corners but carving a niche for itself in the hearts of many sporting riders, the Ninja 650 will arrive on showroom floors with an equipment package that includes LED headlamps, a colour TFT meter and an assist and slipper clutch.

The machine’s narrow, lithe profile is an ideal confidence boost for newer riders while the angular Ninja cowling is great to tuck behind for more experienced riders enjoying the full sporting potential of this mid-capacity Ninja. For 2021 the colour options are Metallic Spark Black, Lime Green / Ebony / Pearl Blizzard White or Metallic Spark Black / Pearl Blizzard White.

The Sugomi presence of the hard edged yet supremely rider friendly Z650 will be accentuated in 2021 with machines offered in Metallic Spark Black / Metallic Flat Spark Black, Pearl Blizzard White / Metallic Spark Black or Metallic Spark Black; this underpinned with dual throttle valves, LED lighting and a trellis type tubular chassis echoing that of the mighty Z H2.

Offering outstanding performance in terms of newbie-friendly power delivery and responsive chassis compliance, each of the “trio of twins” can also offer a lusty mid-range and accomplished top end rush ready to satisfy even the most time-served rider.

Add the narrow profile and sleek outward appearance of the twin cylinder engine and the only decision to make is the family; Ninja, All Roads, One Bike or Z Naked – whatever the choice these three Euro5 compliant mid-weights approach 2021 ready, willing and able.

BMW Motorrad presents the new BMW G 310 GS.
Even more dynamic introduction to the BMW GS experience.

Munich. With the BMW G 310 GS, BMW Motorrad is creating a new experience in the displacement segment below 500 ccm since 2016. Extremely compact, robust and highly versatile in design, it immediately established itself as a genuine BMW GS – especially for newcomers. Four years after its début, BMW Motorrad now presents the new BMW G 310 GS. Versatile, safer and more dynamic – whether in everyday traffic, during pleasure rides on country roads or off-road in easy terrain.

Single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with automatic idle boost and electromotive throttle controller.
The heart of the new BMW G 310 GS is still the reliable 313 ccm liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves, two overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection. The cylinder inclination to the rear and the cylinder head rotated by 180 degrees with intake at the front and exhaust at the rear remain the design characteristics. This arrangement follows the logic of optimal combustion air ducting and results in a particularly compact vehicle architecture. With an output of 25 kW (34 HP) at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm, the single-cylinder engine of the new BMW G 310 GS is the ideal partner for dynamic motorcycling pleasure, including in the current EU 5 homologation.

For use in the new BMW G 310 GS, the engine has been equipped with a so-called “electronic throttle grip” (electromotive throttle controller) and now offers an even more sensitive throttle response. Automatic idle speed increase when starting also prevents a possible sudden stalling of the engine. The self-boosting anti-hopping clutch is also new. It reduces engine drag torque and provides a significant increase in driving safety – particularly during braking manoeuvres involving simultaneous downshifting. It also offers significantly reduced operating forces at the clutch lever.

New LED headlight and LED flashing turn indicators – seeing and being seen optimally.
Whereas the BMW G 310 GS was already equipped with brake lights in LED technology, the new BMW G 310 GS now has a full-LED headlight for even better visibility at night and LED flashing turn indicators for increased visibility in traffic. The new LED headlight not only ensures particularly bright and homogeneous illumination of the road. Due to the modified connection, distracting vibrations of the light cone are a thing of the past. The three light functions high beam, low beam and, depending on the country, daytime driving light can be conveniently operated using the left handlebar controls.

Hand lever adjustable in four stages for brake and clutch.
Both, the clutch lever and the handbrake lever are now adjustable in four stages. It thus now provides ergonomic benefits – particularly for people with small hands. Stage 3 of the brake lever adjustment corresponds to the grip width until now. In the 1st position the brake lever is 6 mm closer to the handlebar.

Gently revised design with an attractive basic colour and two exclusive style variants.
GS is a promise at BMW Motorrad. It stands for absolute functionality, reliability and robustness. Accordingly, the new BMW G 310 GS can be recognised at first glance as a genuine BMW GS. With its characteristic windscreen, high front fender, striking flyline and short, high rear end, it has the main elements of the large BMW R 1250 GS models – and has an even more aggressive and dynamic appearance from the front thanks to the new LED headlight.

Its colour concept also reflects that it is part of the BMW GS family. What all three colour variants of the BMW G 310 GS have in common are the engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and water pump, now painted in metallic titanium grey.

In addition to the typical GS colours in white with the basic colour plain polar white and tank side panels in grey, the new BMW G 310 GS has a very sporty appearance in Rallye style. The frame painted red and Kyanit blue metallic for the tank centre cover and front emphasise the off-road talents and give the motorcycle an extremely dynamic appearance.

As the “40 Years GS” edition, however, the BMW G 310 GS is based on a famous historical model from the BMW GS history – the R 100 GS. Accordingly, it is in black and yellow – with the basic colour cosmic black and yellow graphics on the tank side panels. Just in time for the anniversary, BMW Motorrad is also presenting a new rider equipment collection.

All new features of the BMW G 310 GS at a glance:
• Single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with electromotive throttle controller and automatic idle speed increase.
• Self-boosting anti-hopping clutch.
• New LED headlight and LED flashing turn indicators.
• Hand lever adjustable in four stages for brake and clutch.
• Engine housing covers of alternator, clutch and water pump painted titanium grey metallic.
• Gently revised design with an attractive basic colour and two exclusive style variants.

The new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure.

The BMW GS models are celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2020 and BMW Motorrad is presenting the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure just in time for this.

“Inspiring performance, an impressive range of equipment, an incomparable riding experience and an almost unshakable confidence of GS customers in their motorcycles contribute significantly to the success of the BMW Motorrad brand That was an incentive and at the same time an obligation with the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure.”
Patrick Gürlich, Project Manager, and Reiner Fings, Product Manager

The new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure: Even more sophisticated and innovative for off-road, touring and adventures.

The BMW GS models are celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2020 and BMW Motorrad is presenting the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure just in time for this. Even more sophisticated, more innovative and more fascinating – due to numerous new features and an extended range of optional equipment and Original BMW Motorrad Accessories. Even more so than before, they are the perfect companions for discovering even the most remote corners of our planet by motorcycle.

Like to date, the legendary two-cylinder boxer engine ensures a superior and cultivated drive. It still has a displacement of 1,254 cm3 and with the current EU5 vehicle type approval it also still has a capacity of 100 kW (136 HP). Due to BMW ShiftCam technology for varying valve control timing and valve lift on the intake side, it provides superior power across the entire speed range, extremely smooth and quiet running and outstanding consumption and emission values.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and new “Eco” riding mode as standard. Pro riding modes with riding mode preselection and dynamic engine brake control as optional equipment.

The Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) ensures a high level of driving safety by best possible traction as standard. With the new standard “Eco” riding mode the rider is encouraged to drive as efficiently as possible.

As optional equipment ex works, the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure can be equipped with the Pro riding modes option. With the new riding mode preselection, the rider can have an individual selection of riding modes provided at the riding mode button. The dynamic engine brake control is also a new component of the Pro riding modes. It can be used to safely avoid unstable driving conditions, which can occur in coasting overrun mode or when downshifting due to excessive brake slip at the rear wheel.

New BMW Integral ABS Pro as standard.

The R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure are the world’s most popular touring enduros, in their latest edition with BMW Integral ABS Pro as standard. This is a brake system that provides even more safety when braking, even in inclined positions, and thinks even further ahead, so to speak. The additional expansion of the riding mode concept results in more new functions. For example, the advanced adaptation of the ABS control characteristics to the respective riding mode.

Hill Start Control Pro (HSC Pro) with advanced function as optional equipment ex works.

The Hill Start Control drive-off assistant is standard in both models and enables convenient stopping and starting when driving uphill. Hill Start Control Pro (HSC Pro) goes beyond the Hill Start Control comfort system and noticeably improves the starting performance in all conditions.

New full-LED adaptive headlights, new lighting function, cruising light and function-integrated turn indicator bulbs as optional equipment ex works.

The standard full-LED headlight already illuminates the road with an unmatched bright and clear light. A newly developed headlight with swivel function goes one step further. With the optional “adaptive headlight” equipment, the low-beam headlight of the standard full-LED headlight is turned into the curve depending on the inclined position. Curves are almost fully illuminated this way because the light is where the motorcycle is moving.

The new lighting functions make the experience with the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure even more intense and practical at the same time. In future, the welcome light (“Welcome” function), the “Good bye” function and the “Follow me home” function for orientation will be available as optional equipment. With the optional cruising light equipment, the two front turn indicator bulbs are operated so that they are permanently dimmed simultaneously. In the case of the multifunctional rear indicator lamps, the standard rear LED flashing turn indicators are replaced by LED flashing turn indicators (depending on the market), which can emit yellow flashing light and red brake light or rear light simultaneously.

Vehicle voltage and USB sockets as standard. Seat heating for rider and passenger for increased travelling and touring capability as well as handlebar risers by 30 mm as optional equipment ex works.

The new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure already have two different sockets as standard. A 12 V vehicle voltage socket and a USB-A socket with 5 V power supply. A seat heating for rider and passenger as optional equipment ex works also provides a significant increase in comfort at low outside temperatures. A new operating concept enables particularly easy handling. In addition to the different rider’s seats and footrests available as optional equipment or Original BMW Motorrad Accessories, the handlebar height can now also be adjusted with the optionally available handlebar risers.

The new R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure: Travelling, off-road and adventure expertise, each in an attractive basic colour and the two triple black and Rallye style variants. “40 Years GS” anniversary edition.

In their respective basic versions, the new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure emphasise their more precise nature and universal talents in light white solid paint and ice grey solid paint. In addition, the triple black style and Rallye style variants, available ex works as optional equipment each offer two particularly expressive colour concepts. To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the BMW GS models, the two new GS models with “40 Years GS” in black and yellow are based on a milestone in GS history: the legendary R 100 GS.

Highlights of the new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure:

• Original boxer engine with BMW ShiftCam technology for varying the valve control times and the valve lift on the intake side.

Suzuki releases new colours for GSX-S750

Suzuki has released two new colour options for its popular GSX-S750 naked, which includes a new blue and black edition with fluro accents as well as a grey and black version with striking blue wheels.

A reimagined blue and black livery sees a black tank, mudguard, seat unit, and belly pan complemented by blue radiator shrouds and side panels, all offset by standout fluro accents around the headlight and on the belly pan, plus the 750 graphic on the seat unit and rim decals.

Retaining the same black elements is a variant that swaps the blue to a subtle, classy grey, which is finished with blue details and blue wheels.

Adorning the tank and radiator shrouds of both models is a large GSX logo, reminiscent of the SUZUKI logo on the firm’s GSX-R machines.

The GSX-S750 produces 114PS from it’s GSX-R-derived engine, which is tuned for more street-focussed performance. It features a three-mode traction control system, plus Suzuki’s practical easy-start and low rpm assist aids.

And currently available with £750 off it means the GSX-S750 comes with an RRP of just £7249, and with a £2000 deposit or trade-in can be ridden for £60.30 per month on a three-year PCP deal.
