Pack-up and Back-Up with SW-Motech

New from Germany’s SW-Motech, the Racer [above left] and Trooper [above right] backpacks are tailored to the motorcycle rider, featuring high quality materials, low weight and comfort both on and off the bike.

Racer

Holding a handy 16 litres, the Racer is ideal for commuters and day trippers. The shoulder and waist straps are fully adjustable for a snug fit and to help prevent the pack shifting whilst riding. All three straps, and the back of the pack, are padded for comfort when carrying heavy loads. A quick-release buckle makes getting the pack on and off easy and there’s a carry handle too. Inside there are separate compartments to keep contents organised, including an integrated laptop holder, which will hold devices with a screen size of up to 14 inches, and a cable port that enables the wearer to use a music device while on the move. A tough and durable 600D textile shell and integrated rain cover keep contents safe, while reflective detailing keeps the wearer visible in low light conditions.

Trooper

For longer trips, and those who need to carry bigger loads, the Trooper has a 25-litre capacity, divided between two main compartments. These in turn have separate sections, plus a compartment for laptops with screen size up to 15 inches and there’s also a zipped lid pocket. Luggage compression straps can be used to lash on extra items (e.g. waterproofs) and the Trooper has an external helmet net as well. Like the Racer, the outer shell is made from 600D fabric with high visibility detailing, and there’s an integrated rain cover to keep contents dry. The back and all three straps are padded and have adjustment throughout, plus a carry handle.

The 16-litre Racer retails for £41.35, the larger 25-litre Trooper costs £72.16 including VAT. Call 01256 704909 or visit www.motohaus.com for details.

1299 Panigale arrives in Ducati dealerships this week

This week Ducati dealers throughout the UK and Ireland will welcome the arrival into their showrooms of the latest Ducati Superbike, the new 1299 Panigale.

Deliveries to the 31 strong dealer network have already begun with the majority of those initial bikes making their way on to the dealers demonstration fleets. Many customers and buyers who have pre-ordered the new Panigale will be anxious to test ride a bike that has received excellent reviews.

The 1299 Panigale debuts on UK roads in two versions, the standard and S. Both share the 1285cc Superquadro engine that produces an incredible torque of 144.6 Nm and 205hp. This stunning performance is contained within an incredibly compact monoque chassis that contributes significantly to a dry weight of just 166.5kg.

The 1299’s combination of extreme power, incredible torque and light weight needs to be harnessed and Ducati has achieved this thanks to innovative technology that allows a bike that is more powerful and more responsive than its predecessor to be safer and easier to ride.

The use of new electronic aids integrated into the now familiar riding modes is a major factor in making this an important leap forward in Superbike design. Both versions of the new Panigale share the Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU, Riding Modes (Race, Sport and Wet), Cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Wheelie Control, Engine Braking Control, Ducati Quick Shifter up and TFT instrumentation with indicator of lean angle.  The S version goes further with Semi active Öhlins Smart EC suspension and steering damper and also possesses lightweight forged aluminium wheels, full LED headlight and front mudguard in carbon fibre. There is also a wide range of apparel and accessories linked with this thoroughbred from Bologna which can be seen at Ducati dealers as well as online at www.ducatiuk.com.

Dealers will also be able to take customers through the Ducati TriOptions offers that are available. The standard 1299 Panigale is available from £179 per month or the S version from £235 per month*.

SCORPION ™ Trail II, the latest tyre from Pirelli, opens the path to adventure, equipping the new Ducati Multistrada 1200

SCORPION ™ Trail II, the latest tyre from Pirelli, opens the path to adventure, equipping the new Ducati Multistrada 1200

As original equipment in 120/70 ZR17 front and 190/55 ZR17 rear sizes for the Multistrada 1200, Multistrada 1200 S and Multistrada 1200 S D|air, the new enduro street tyre is a synthesis of the best features offered by an off road product and those guaranteed by a sport touring tyre

SCORPION™ Trail II, the innovative enduro street tyre from Pirelli and the direct successor of SCORPION™ Trail, is the first equipment of the new Ducati Multistrada 1200.
Specifically in 120/70 ZR17 front and 190/55 ZR17 rear sizes, the latest arrival in Pirelli’s range is supplied to the Multistrada 1200, Multistrada 1200 S and Multistrada 1200 S D|air.

Since the inception of the Multistrada project in 2003 Pirelli has worked closely with Ducati offering to the company from Borgo Panigale tyres increasingly evolved to guarantee an important contribution to the benefits offered by the motorcycle in terms of performance and safety. The first version of the Ducati Multistrada in 2003 was equipped with Pirelli SCORPION™ Sync, with the new model in 2010 adopting the Pirelli SCORPION™ Trail and now, with the new Multistrada 1200, the partnership is strengthened thanks to the original equipment of the new Pirelli SCORPION™ Trail II.

The new SCORPION™ Trail II is the synthesis of the meeting of two worlds: the field of off road competition and the long distance road trip. Designed for the most demanding motorcyclists, it features key points of excellence; high mileage, consistency of performance for its entire tyre life and top notch wet behaviour.
SCORPION™ Trail II is the new Pirelli tyre specifically designed to meet the most demanding expectations of this market, with an aggressive tread pattern supported by strong technological innovation, giving good stability even at high speed, traction on dirt, handling, comfort and grip in all riding conditions.

The word SCORPION™ recalls immediately the range of Pirelli products intended for use in off-road competitions not only in the two-wheel world but also on four wheels. The products in the SCORPION™ line are present in offroad car racing competitions, in the Enduro and Cross Country Rally World Championships and in the Motocross World Championship in which the range of off-road Pirelli tyres has been the undisputed leader for over 30 years with 62 world titles. The enduro street market remains a segment where motorcyclists’ expectations are always high and where motorcycle manufacturers continue to invest in launching new uprated products every year.

Who is it aimed at?
Suitable for the latest generation adventure touring and enduro street motorcycles able to tackle even long journeys, with light off-road sections, the new SCORPION™ Trail II is a tyre with good road performance, yet capable of tackling unpaved surfaces. It is designed for motorcycles such as the Ducati Multistrada, models which are increasingly being purchased by riders strictly for use on the road but which, if necessary, may also face stretches of dirt and light off-road.

The enduro street segment
The enduro segment was born during the 80’s when motorcycles equipped with a 21″ front tyre began winning the most prestigious African rallies. Gradually these bikes reached the road in long distance raids, and thus their evolution of use reached a parallel evolution of the size of the tyres they mounted: the rear wheels became larger, while the front shrank to 19″.
The revolution in the development of the segment arrived in 2003 when Ducati introduced to the market the Multistrada, a bike made to take on winding mountain roads and for competitions such as Pikes Peak. As a privileged partner of Ducati and for the Multistrada, Pirelli created the SCORPION™ Sync, the first ‘knobbly’ looking street sport tyre in 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 sizes. Now, a decade later, Pirelli will once again be the leader of a revolution in this segment, thanks to the introduction of the SCORPION™ Trail range in the rear dual-compound 190/55-17 size that marked the dawn of a new generation of street enduro machines such as the new Ducati Multistrada 1200.
In recent years the enduro street segment has become one of the most important in the market and Pirelli decided to develop tyres with more road performance, but with an off road look, with particular attention to the handling in different road conditions.

The tread pattern
The innovative tread pattern of SCORPION™ Trail II is the result of this famous Off road line enriched with the experience gained by Pirelli with the development of ANGEL™ GT, considered the reference tyre in the Sport Touring segment. The tread pattern of SCORPION™ Trail II therefore has an aggressive look typical of an off-road tyre, behind which there are class performances combining the features of an enduro product, with those of a sport touring one.
The side grooves of the new SCORPION™ Trail II have been designed to ensure optimal drainage in case of rain, while the layout and “binary open” shape of the central ones not only contribute to the drainage of water but also ensure better traction, greater stability and more regular wear.

The compounds
Pirelli was the first company to introduce the bi-compound solution in some rear sizes of enduro street tyres with the SCORPION™ Trail. Today, the Italian tyre company is able to apply this technology to all of the rear tyres in the SCORPION™ Trail II range.
Compared to its predecessor, the new tyre has a compound developed for high mileage without compromising cornering performance, and especially developed to offer excellent wet behaviour.
The side compound was designed to optimize the balance between performance on dry and wet roads.
The profiles
The profiles of SCORPION™ Trail II are derived directly from those used for ANGEL™ GT, the winner of important sport touring tyre comparatives made by the most prestigious international magazines.
Thanks to a shorter, wider, contact patch area, the profile helps to reduce and level the wear of the tread, thus ensuring greater mileage. Still with the application of new profiles it has been possible to increase the handling which remains unchanged throughout the whole life of the product. All of these factors benefit traction and give better machine control.

The structure
Thanks to the structure developed to enable the central and lateral compounds to work optimally, the new SCORPION™ Trail II ensures high performance, even at full load or with heavier motorcycles. This provides improved wet performance than its predecessor and an incredible versatility, making it comfortable even for long trips and on winding roads and in case of adverse weather conditions.

The K-5 is most highly anticipated helmet of the 2015 AGV collection, and is now available

Made from carbon and glass fibres, that guarantees resistance and is extremely lightweight, the new AGV K-5 arrives on the market with clear intent of becoming the top helmet for sports and road use.

Its optimum fit with 3D linings and the fanatical attention to detail such as the small spoilers that integrate perfectly with the overall shape of the shell, it can help reduce turbulence and improve the Cx (coefficient of aerodynamic penetration) the slim, aerodynamic chin guard also ensures that the AGV K5 is highly stable even at high speed. These features contribute to make the AGV K-5 the best for comfort.

The K-5 belongs to the AGV EXTREME STANDARDS family. The structural components of the helmet were specifically designed to offer excellent performance standards while minimising dimensions and weight. The K-5 in MS size weighs 1390g (+/-50g). Also the bottom side profile was specifically designed to reduce potential damage to the collarbone in the event of a fall.

The K-5 was designed using the FEM (Finite Element Method), which allows impacts and helmet resistance to be simulated before the moulds are actually made. This sophisticated and costly method allows AGV to create a light, compact helmet with improved energy absorption properties. In this context, the K-5 provides safety margins that far exceed those set by ECE2205 standards.

The IVS (Integrated Ventilation System) features ducts that are hollowed into the shell for improved, more efficient air circulation inside the helmet. The K-5 features three front intakes, two side and one central (which is positioned strategically high so that the intake still flows air even if the sunvisor is in the “up” position), integrated in the shell profile, which provides a constant flow of fresh air inside the helmet. Rear extractors with a new ON/OFF system remove hot moist air. The design has been ‘wind tunnel tested’ to optimise ventilation.

The helmet also features two outer and four inner shell sizes. These inner EPS shells are made of foam from 4 different thicknesses to guarantee the rider a perfect fit. Each EPS inner shell has 4 different densities, to always guarantee the best safety and lightness combination. During the helmet design stage, vision is now significantly wider than on a traditional helmet thanks to the special shape of the bottom side edge of the aperture.

The helmet can fit two different visors depending on shell size to ensure a perfect seal with the shell.

The K-5 also has a new “easy-op” micro-opening system; you can open the visor in small amounts by using a button on the chin guard. This locks the visor in a slight open position for better ventilation. The compact visor opening and closing mechanism has the XQRS system, for quick visor removal without using tools.

The K-5 comes with an internal smoked anti-scratch sun visor that can be removed without tools for cleaning or replacement, plus removable and washable Dri-Lex® liners have been specially treated to prevent bacteria from forming.

The new AGV K-5 has a “Double-D” retention system and is “SHARE SYSTEM READY*” for the AGV communication system that allows the rider and passenger to talk as well as use a mobile phone or Sat Nav via Bluetooth®.

The Share system also helps decrease the emission of electromagnetic waves.

The RRP for the AGV K-5 is €339 for the Multi version and €299 for the Mono version

The AGV K-5 is also available through D-Store online at the following link:

http://www.dainese.com/eu_en/k-5-agv-e2205-multi-83100.html

The K-5 helmet has different homologations, depending on the country where it is sold
* The SHARE SYSTEM is available only in certain countries

Henry Surtees Foundation backs pioneering ‘Blood on Board’ project

The two Vauxhall Mokka 4×4 vehicles were handed over to the two charities – Northumbria Blood Bikes and Blood Bikes Cumbria – which provide vital transportation of blood in the region.

The donation was made by the Henry Surtees Foundation in support of the Blood On Board project, which allows the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) to carry and administer blood on its rescue missions.

The vehicles were handed over on behalf of the foundation by James Whitham, the Yorkshire-born motorcycle racer turned commentator. In a racing career spanning 18 years, he secured four British titles and competed in World Superbike, World Supersport, Endurance and Grand Prix.

As well as the success, the hard-charging motorcycle racer also survived crashes and battled lymphatic cancer.

He said: ‘I’ve chased time at race tracks in pursuit of podiums, but for the likes of the Great North Air Ambulance Service, every second can literally be the matter of life or death.

‘The Air Ambulance and regional Blood Bike groups do an incredible selfless job; I hope that I will never need their services, but having had mates rescued from the side of remote mountains, and of course at race tracks – its a service that resonates with me’.

James Whitham visited the GNAAS base at Langwathby, near Penrith, today to officially hand-over the two Vauxhall Mokka 1.7CDTi 4×4 SUVs to be used by the two Blood Bike groups so that they have all-weather transport for the ferrying of the blood between hospital and aircraft.

The Henry Surtees Foundation was set up by motorsport legend John Surtees following the tragic death of his son Henry.

Mr Whitham added: “I was absolutely honoured to be asked to represent John Surtees OBE and The Henry Surtees Foundation today to hand over the two vehicles.

“I know that John would also like to say a special thank you to Vauxhall for their support too. I’m sure the assistance of these vehicles will be a huge benefit to the region and help save multiple lives.”

As previously announced, The Henry Surtees Foundation also donated equipment to GNAAS including thermostatically controlled boxes and blood warmers to enable them to deliver fresh blood supplies to the scene of life threatening accidents, and carry out roadside blood transfusions. GNAAS is the only air ambulance in the North of England to perform this life-saving procedure, which has been administered three times since launching six weeks ago.

Owain Harris, of Northumbria Blood Bikes but also speaking on behalf of his Cumbria counterparts, said: “We are extremely grateful to the Henry Surtees Foundation for their generosity in providing a four wheel drive vehicle to the charity. Normally the blood is transported by motorcycle, however when the roads are covered in snow we are unable to ride, and would have to suspend the service.

“The Vauxhall Mokka, a four wheel drive, means that the blood will get through, every day, regardless of the weather in order that The Great North Air Ambulance can carry out it’s vital role in saving lives using the Blood on Board project.”

The Blood on Board project was devised by Dr Rachel Hawes, of GNAAS and Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

She said: “After years of research, the project is now active and is already benefitting patients across the North. Lives will be saved because of this advancement in medical care, it is as simple as that. This would not have been possible without the support of Blood Bikes and the Henry Surtees Foundation, and we are immensely grateful to them for that.”

The revamped Ducati Riding Experience

  • Enrolments are now open for DRE 2015 courses (at dre.ducati.com)
  • Introduced a road riding course dedicated to the new Multistrada 1200
  • The new 1299 Panigale S will play a leading role on renewed track courses

The 2015 edition of the Ducati Riding Experience, the riding school that Ducati has been organising for over 10 years, is now taking enrolments.
The DRE has four distinguishing factors that put it in a class of its own:

  • a group of internationally renowned instructors from the worldwide racing community (such as official Ducati MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro, world Superbike champion Carlos Checa, two-times world champion Manuel Poggiali, official Ducati test rider Alessandro Valia and a host of other champions led by Dario Marchetti);
  • legendary racetracks such as Mugello and Misano;
  • tried and tested tuition methods that make use of advanced technology;
  • all-inclusive packages, thanks to a latest-generation bike pool and the availability of quality riding gear.

One of the most important developments for 2015 is the introduction of the Multistrada Techride course dedicated to the new Multistrada 1200. This is a full immersion riding course for touring and adventure enthusiasts. Held in the beautiful hills of Tuscany region, with base in Montepulciano (near Siena), the course programme lasts a day and a half and focuses on road-specific techniques as well as teaching the basics of off-road riding.

At the circuit, the first development for 2015 is the Intro course, suitable for those who are not habitual bike riders or new license holders who want to build up their confidence and bike control skills. The course takes place in the paddock and alternates individual practice sessions with theoretical lessons designed to illustrate the pillars, such as riding position, curves visualization, braking with ABS, and how to react in front of unexpected obstacles (the course does not include track sessions). Intro course participants will be riding the new Monster 821.

Again in the paddock, but with a final on-track session, the Precision course is for those looking to improve their on-road riding technique and enjoy a sports-oriented riding experience. This course uses the Monster 1200, the Hypermotard and the Hyperstrada.

There are four track riding courses: Track Warm-Up, Track Evo, Master and Champs Academy. The first is for newcomers to the track, the second for those keen to improve their track riding technique; on both courses riders will be using the Ducati 899 Panigale. The Master course is for more experienced track users eager to maximise their performance. The Champs Academy offers a full day as a professional rider with a truly exceptional instructor: World Superbike Champion 2011 Carlos Checa. Master and Champs Academy course participants will ride the new 1299 Panigale S.

Invest in protecting your S1000R

BMW specialists, Wunderlich, have developed a range of accessories to help protect the most vulnerable components of the S1000R/RR. Even a low speed or static drop can cause costly damage to high specification sports machines, so investing in protection is a wise precaution.

The range includes an Oil Cooler Grill (£79.00) made from meshed stainless steel with a sturdy anodized aluminium frame; heavy-duty, slip-resistant Fairing Crash Protectors (£99.00), which come with a 5 year warranty; a Water Cooler Grill (£99.00) also constructed of stainless steel and anodised aluminium; and Rear Double Shock Crash Protectors (£49.00), which are both abrasion resistant and feature an integrated damping layer to help absorb impact and protect the vulnerable wheel spindle from damage. They have a 5 year warranty too.

The majority of Wunderlich’s 3000 products are designed and made in-house, using the latest 3-D prototyping printers, laser scanning for precision and accuracy, and manufactured on their own CNC milling machines.

Quality and durability is tested and assessed under extreme conditions, through participation in competitions such as the BMW Power Cup. Wunderlich are also fully certified to DIN/EN/ISO 9001:2000 German Federal Motor Transport Authority standards for quality assurance and their products are tested and approved to the tough TÜV standard.

Yamaha has joined forces with the Amateur Motor Cycle Association – AMCA – to offer a brand new off-road riding experience; the Yamaha AMCA MX Experience.

Yamaha’s new partnership with one of the oldest governing bodies in the sport of off-road competition, gives wanna-be off-road riders the perfect opportunity to try the sport of motocross at a range of venues throughout the UK, without the commitment of buying a bike and associated kit.

With over 80 years’ experience in running off-road events from the humble local trial right up to awe-inspiring mass participation beach racing, the AMCA and its team have all the skills and knowledge necessary to provide an environment for those wanting to try their hand at riding an off-road bike in a safe and secure environment, whilst having fun and learning a new skill at the same time.

In addition to having a fleet of Yamaha’s latest off-road machinery at its disposal, including the stunning reverse-cylinder YZ250F motocrosser and the highly acclaimed new fuel-injected WR250F enduro bike, the Yamaha AMCA MX Experience will provide all the necessary riding kit and protection for the day, as well as comprehensive but easy to understand tuition, to ensure that riders get the most from their experience. Use of bikes and fuel for the day is included in the price.

It’s not just there for novice riders either, it will also be actively encouraging riders to build on their new found skills and take their first steps in to the world of competitive sport by offering a unique Race Day Experience package. Available to those that have already completed a Yamaha AMCA MX Experience, riders will have the opportunity to take their riding to the next level and go bar-to-bar on track in their first novice AMCA race.

With riding kit, bike and fuel provided as part of the package, riders will also have an AMCA instructor/mentor for the day that will guide them through the whole experience from sign-on to (maybe) lifting a trophy on the podium at the end of the day!

Yamaha UK’s Off-Road Marketing Coordinator, Karl Radley said: “We are really excited to have the AMCA on board as a partner and to be able to continue to offer Yamaha fans the opportunity to experience our products and the thrill of off-road riding. With the new Yamaha AMCA MX Experience, we are looking to the future and how we can find new ways for riders to experience our products and encourage them in to the sport of off-road.”

The AMCA’s Chairman Don Green added: “We have believed for a number of years that an MX school would be an asset to the AMCA and the partnership with Yamaha has realised this. We are looking forward to the prospect of introducing new people to the world of off road riding and in particular motocross. The Yamaha AMCA MX Experience is the latest initiative for the AMCA, which has always strived to be at the forefront of the sport, from buying and leasing its own exclusive tracks, to acquiring over thirty start gates and P.A. trailers. The AMCA continues to be innovative in working hard to secure the future of the sport.”
