Two-Wheeled Maserati For Sale For £9,000

Two-wheeled Maserati for sale for £9,000 – £11,000 at the H&H Classics Sale on April 6th at the National Motorcycle Museum.

A rare 1955 Maserati 160T4 will be sold by H&H Classics on Wednesday, 6th April at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull for an estimate of £9, 000 – £11, 000.

Mike Davis, Head of H&H Classics Motorcycles, says: “This rare motorcycle was produced by Maserati in the 1950s. It has been a much loved part of a collection of Italian classics for a number of years and restored by a previous owner with a good degree of originality. It would make a great addition to any collection.”

The bike features Maserati’s own 160cc single cylinder four stroke engine and fitted with a sports seat, alloy rims and period correct tyres. It will need recommissioning. It comes to sale with a current V5C.

Maserati, more famous for manufacturing cars, began their association with two wheels when Carlo Maserati started his engineering career building single cylinder engines to mount on bicycles, working from a workshop just outside Milan.

During the First World War Alfieri Maserati, on completing his military service, set up a spark plug factory in Milan and in 1937 the Orsi family acquired the Maserati concern. When the home market showed signs of an increasing need for cheap motorised transport, especially on two wheels, Maserati decided to enter the motorcycle market by taking over the established Italmoto factory in Bologna. In 1953 all motorcycle production was transferred to the Maserati factory in Modena, with early production of motorcycles consisting of the 160cc four-stroke previously produced by Italmoto but now sporting the Trident logo and renamed the Tipo 160/ T4.

The company established a new department to design and produce their own bikes and the first model, the L/ 125/ T2, was influenced greatly by the German DKW design. Over the following years several new models were introduced with engine sizes varying from 50 cc to 250 cc but in 1957 news of serious financial difficulties within the Orsi group began to leak out. This was followed by the news of Maserati’s withdrawal from Formula One and other official competition. In 1960 the banks decided to ‘pull the plug’, marking the end for motorcycle manufacturing and the Maserati trident would in future only be seen on four wheeled vehicles.

This 1955 160T4 four stroke was restored a few years ago by a previous owner keeping a good degree of originality. Finished in typical Italian red with plenty of aluminium its undoubtedly a very pretty and extremely rare bike with its sports seat and alloy wheel rims. Part of a private collection for a number of years and supplied with a current V5C, it will need some recommissioning before use.

Vanson Leathers Introduces New Line of Motorcycle Riding Gear

Vanson Leathers Introduces New Line of Motorcycle Riding Gear to Support Charging Across America Challenge.

Charging Across America Challenge electric motorcycle riders to wear Vanson’s new “Charger” series cruising gear

Vanson Leathers is introducing a new custom-fitted cruising gear series to celebrate its support of the Charging Across America Challenge (CAAC). Designed to promote the nation’s transition to electric vehicles (EVs), the event features two riders, Rob Swartz and Steven Day, who will attempt to break the Cannonball cross-country electric motorcycle record of 178 hours and 17 minutes.

Sporting all-new Vanson “Charger” cruising gear, both riders will simultaneously journey coast-to-coast in opposite directions on Energica electric motorcycles following the original 2,906-mile route of the Cannonball Run, creating a unique “race within a race.” The challenge kicks off April 18, 2022, with finish-line crossings scheduled in Redondo Beach, California, and New York City on April 22, 2022.

“When Rob gave us the CAAC details, we wanted to create something really special to reflect the Earth Day finish-line crossing,” said Vanson founder, Michael van der Sleesen. Vanson designers selected a 10 lb. 10 oz. Army Duck canvas made from “ring-spun” cotton yarn material for the “Charger” bib pants and “Road King” jackets, since it is 100% plant-based and sustainable with minimal fossil fuel used to create the final product.

“We’ve dubbed the new design the ‘Charger’ series since it was inspired by the CAAC. From plant seeds to pants seats, this gear is 100% American-made, including the dying and finishing process,” added van der Sleesen.

“Army Duck is a traditional fabric whose time has come again; it’s truly a ‘back to the future’ material. It’s breathable, waterproof and durable. We characterize wax cotton as a ‘living material,’ which can be easily maintained and re-proofed with wax to counter natural aging that occurs with use and exposure to UV over time,” noted van der Sleesen.

Event organizers hope to demonstrate the superiority of electric motorcycles vs. internal combustion-powered brands, but the CAAC is not about speed—it’s about planning, rider endurance and finishing safely. “Rider comfort and safety will be essential in setting the new cross-country electric motorcycle record,” stated event organizer and westbound rider Rob Swartz. “From casual weekend cruising to attempting new speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats, I’ve relied on Vanson gear for over 20 years,” he added.

Viewers can watch the real-time results of this multiday record attempt on the event website. www.caac2022.com, and on social media.

GBRacing has released a full set of protective secondary engine covers for the latest generation Yamaha MT-09.

New engine architecture to give an increase in both cubic capacity and performance was a key part of the first major revision to the hugely popular Yamaha triple since its launch in 2013.

Yamaha’s 2021 revamp also afforded GBRacing the opportunity to produce a completely new engine cover set comprising of alternator, clutch, pulse and water pump covers.

The same 890cc three-cylinder engine is used in the FZ-09, Tracer and Scrambler, adding four new Yamaha models to GBRacing’s constantly expanding product range.

These new Yamaha models bring GBRacing’s total secondary engine cover range to over 140 models across 13 different manufacturers.

Constant development using data and lessons learned from world championship racing and investment in new engineering capabilities, together with advances in GBRacing’s patented composite, has delivered improvements in all areas of GBRacing secondary engine covers from durability and resilience to finish.

Having recently repurposed the original GBRacing factory in Barnet to specialise in hand-finishing smaller components to cope with increased customer demand, this is the first set of covers to be designed, prototyped and produced exclusively at GBRacing’s new purpose-built facility in Baldock, Hertfordshire, using the very latest, state-of-the-art five-axis CNC milling machines.

Silverstone Auctions Find Rare By-Van

Silverstone Auctions is to offer a rare and curious By-Van in their next stand-alone auction of Classic Motorcycles. This recently discovered house clearance gem was launched by the Turner Manufacturing Company in the late 1940s under the new ‘Light Delivery Vehicles’ banner, as an alternative to a van for smaller businesses and sole traders. The By-Van is powered by a Turner Tiger 168cc two-stroke engine driving the front wheel via a three-speed gearbox and can reach highs of 30mph.

Despite being an ingenious space-saving invention capable of carrying a load of up to 1.5cwt, the ‘speedy mechanical errand boy’ concept was slow to take off and so very few were produced, making this an extremely rare, if not unique, opportunity to acquire a piece of Midlands automotive history.

The example soon to be offered by Silverstone Auctions has been in the same family ownership for 40 years, is in original unrestored condition, appears never to have been registered and shows only 20 recorded miles.

However, it is not the first time this By-Van has seen the light of day in recent years, as the team from Antique Archelogy, who feature on The History Channel’s ‘American Pickers’ show, tried and failed to buy the vehicle back in 2015 from its late owner. Despite being offered a high price, the owner couldn’t bear to part with it. The show footage can be seen in full on YouTube.

Silverstone Auctions is the official auction partner of Devitt MCN Festival of Motorcycling which takes place at the East of England Showground, Peterborough on 14th and 15th May. The rare By-Van is amongst 50 other Classic Motorcycles already been consigned for sale on 14th May at what is certain to be an action-packed event featuring bike displays, stunt shows, racing and of course, new for 2022; the auction.

Parties interested in consigning for the auction or registering to bid should visit www.silverstoneauctions.com or call 01926 691141.

Yamaha Motor Develops TY-E 2.0 Electric Trials Bike

Yamaha Motor announced today that it has developed the TY-E 2.0 electric trials bike, which approaches achieving carbon neutrality from the perspective of motorcycling fun.

The Company plans to enter the bike in select rounds of the 2022 FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme) Trial World Championship.

In 2021, the Company reviewed the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050 originally formulated in 2018 and set a new goal of aiming for carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities—including across the life cycles of its products—by 2050.

The project to develop the TY-E 2.0 is underway as one uniquely Yamaha approach for achieving carbon neutrality. Under its FUN x EV development concept, the TY-E 2.0 aims to provide more fun than internal combustion engines by taking advantage of the traits unique to electric vehicles, such as powerful low-down torque and strong acceleration.

The TY-E 2.0’s development progressed based on the first TY-E model announced in 2018, and features a newly designed monocoque frame made of composite laminates housing an electric power unit with improved performance through a combination of mechanical parts and electronic control. The bike also mounts a newly developed lightweight battery with approximately 2.5 times the capacity of the previous model.

The new TY-E 2.0 is scheduled to participate in the FIM Trial World Championship from June this year with Kenichi Kuroyama on the Yamaha Factory Racing Team, who also serves as its development rider. The TY-E 2.0 will also be exhibited at the Yamaha Motor booth at the 49th Tokyo Motorcycle Show to be held from March 25 to 27.

  • Monocoque frame made of composite laminates

The TY-E 2.0 employs a monocoque frame made of composite laminates to contribute to lighter weight and optimal rigidity. The layout of the power unit and battery was reviewed and revised to achieve a significantly lower center of gravity compared to the previous model.

  • Newly developed lightweight battery with approx. 2.5x more capacity

Metzeler Presents The New Karoo 4

Metzeler presents the new Karoo 4, the knobbly tyre for adventure and maxi enduro motorcycles.

The new KAROO 4 enhances the know-how of the two-wheel focused brand to reach a new level of performance in the maxi enduro segment. Available from March 2022, it will replace the current KAROO 3.

Successor of the award-winning KAROO 3, KAROO 4 represents the latest generation of the METZELER product family: a knobbly tyre intended for the equipment of adventure and maxi enduro motorcycles, designed for on/off use.

The new KAROO 4 enhances even the most cutting edge, latest medium and large displacement enduro motorcycles that travel both on asphalt and off-road, working in tune with the most advanced rider aid systems. KAROO 4 is a highly versatile product that gives, compared to its predecessor KAROO 3, a significant improvement in off-road and on-road wet performance, even when fully loaded.

Who is KAROO 4 designed for?
METZELER KAROO 4 is the ideal choice for:

  • Owners of adventure motorcycles, riders who use their motorcycles for journeys 50% on-road 50% off-road, looking for experiences without limits. They seek reliability and performance in different weather conditions, stability even at full load and mileage.
  • Motorcyclists who want to test their skills and their bike’s capabilities, they value off-road performance in a tyre.
  • Owners of ‘scrambler’ style machines, who require an aggressive knobbly look without sacrificing on-road performance, with particular reference to handling and safety in the wet.

The benefits of KAROO 4
The main benefits of KAROO 4 are:

  • Exemplary off-road traction, thanks to the patented tread design.
  • Significant on-road handling even at full load, thanks to the profile featuring METZELER MRC[1] technology that improves line holding despite the ‘knobs’.
  • Extreme abrasion, cut and tearing resistance, thanks to the carbon black based compounds and footprint area optimisation.
  • Top wet performance and integration with rider aids. The combination of the technologies featured in KAROO 4 allows riders to safely manage different weather conditions and road surfaces, including in case of emergency braking.

THE TYRE IN DETAIL
The tread pattern
KAROO 4 features a revolutionary patented tread design, which raises the tyre’s all-round performance levels on both asphalt and on different types of off-road terrain.

As for the onroad performance, METZELER engineers worked to improve in particular the overall handling and wet behaviour, developing a knobbly pattern that allows you to safely tackle certain lean angles even in wet conditions. In the off-road field, KAROO 4 increases the performance level especially on very soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and clay.

The KAROO 4 tread pattern features these main characteristics:
– Patented design DETRATEC™, composed of central spoon-shaped knobs, which are separated from the side knobs by a wavy longitudinal groove. The combination of these three elements has a dual function: at first it traps the terrain between the knobs to generate lateral thrust and secondly, it releases it thanks to self-cleaning properties.

– Multi-pitch design. The groups of knobs are repeated with an irregular cadence to mitigate the impact of the tread against the asphalt and improve rolling smoothness;

– Optimised footprint area that includes a greater number of knobs in the contact patch, compared to KAROO 3, to improve road handling and integration with electronic rider aids;

Patented DYMATEC technology, a design methodology that preserve the functional geometries of the knobs and the tyre performance over time. In details, this technology features variable groove wall angles depending on their position along the tread band to maximise tread pattern solidity and wear uniformity.

The tread compound
The front tyre of KAROO 4 is a single compound. The radial sizes feature a carbon black compound with extreme resistance to abrasion, a direct evolution of what was used for KAROO 3. For cross-ply sizes, the engineers of the METZELER brand developed a new compound with the aim of reaching a wider operating range and greater adhesion to surfaces.

The rear radial sizes are bi-compound:

The central compound is 100% carbon black, with remarkable abrasion resistance;

The shoulder compound has an 80% carbon black and 20% silica formulation, to ensure thermal stability even under stress.

The profile

KAROO 4 adopt the METZELER MRC[2] technology, which features different profiles from the central band to the shoulder area. This increases ease of handling, improves traction and stability, even under full load. In the rear sizes, with a shorter and wider contact area compared to its predecessor, the profile of the KAROO 4 helps to reduce and even out tread wear for greater mileage.

The structure

KAROO 4 features lighter construction schemes than its predecessor. In particular radial sizes, thanks to the use of the zero-degree steel belt with INTERACT variable tension technology, guarantee a gradual riding response and a solid feeling of control.

The range

KAROO 4 will be available in the following sizes starting from March 2022:
