LS2 Serra Evo Ladies Jacket

The LS2 Serra Evo Ladies Jacket is an all-purpose jacket ready to take you from the daily commute to a long tour. Suitable for most weather conditions, it is waterproof, breathable and well-fitted.

The LS2 Serra Evo Ladies jacket is well fitted to a woman’s shape and suitable for a variety of motorcycling rides.

Earlier in the year (June), I had a trip to Norway and this time it was a different style of riding. I knew there would be plenty of off-roading to do and wanted a jacket that would be suitable for any weather without having to stop to adjust anything. LS2 Serra Evo Jacket fitted the requirement. It is waterproof and breathable with vents for warmer days. It also comes with a thermal lining but I was hoping that won’t be necessary (it wasn’t).

What I really like about the jacket is the flattering fit for a lady. With several adjustments available, it really follows the body shape beautifully for a look that is safe and attractive.

Introducing the Kawasaki Vulcan S

Many thanks again to Alfs Motorcycles (particularly Mick/Dave) in Worthing, West Sussex for the loan of bike for the day.

I would say from the outset the Vulcan may not be everyones cup of tea, I’ve never ridden a cruiser style bike before so this is a first. At first looks I personally would’ve gone for the more naked look rather than the model I rode which was the Vulcan S Tourer in Metallic Flat Spark Black. This variant comes with a high touring screen, panniers and a sissy bar. Once out on the road it took me awhile to get used to the relaxed riding, and where to put my feet on teh pegs. When coming to a stop at a junction or lights I kept putting my feet down where the pegs normally are on say roadster or modern classic but the pegs weren’t there and I was just grabbing air. Once I did get used too it I have to say I did enjoy the ride. Like many I’m sure I had a pre-conception of cruisers and that was the weight, I imagined it to be very heavy but I was pleasantly surprised how light it was. That said I can’t compare it to anything like an Indian or a Harley as I have yet to ride one.

So here is a bit of info on the Kawasaki Vulcan S…

The Kawasaki Vulcan S is a versatile cruiser and has attention from riders of all levels, thanks to its impressive design, performance, and cutting-edge features. Furthermore, the bike offers a range of optional accessories, such as saddlebags and a passenger seat, allowing riders to customise the motorcycle for touring or accommodate a passenger with ease.

Kawasaki places a strong emphasis on rider safety, and the Vulcan S is no exception. The motorcycle is equipped with advanced safety features that provide a secure and confident ride. The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) ensures optimal braking performance, preventing wheel lock-up and allowing riders to maintain control in emergency situations. The bikes versatility and affordability make it an appealing choice for riders of all levels. Kawasaki has indeed created a cruiser that strikes the perfect balance between power, style, and practicality.

The Kawasaki Vulcan may not be everyones cup of tea but I can say enjoyed my time with it, I would say it would be perfect for someone looking for a cruiser style bike on a budget. I know I bang on about it but I do like a bike where I can put both feet down at the lights or a junction, so with a seat height of just 705mm it would also be perfect for someone short on stature.

Shoei Neotec 3 Helmet

Danny McFadden of Danny McFadden Racing tests the Shoei Neotec 3 Helmet with thanks to helmetcity.co.uk

I’ll be the first to admit that the very mention of a flip up helmet produces images of head to toe cordura, RoSPA, owners clubs and intercoms. Something only applicable to proper grown ups. However after spending the last few weeks acclimatising to the new Shoei NeoTec 3 I’m a true convert.

Having always opted for the race end of the helmet market the ease of use offered by the NeoTec 3 for road riding was a breath of fresh air. The level of comfort and wind noise on offer is as per my current X-Spirit Pro which I believe is a testament to the race helmet in being able to match the NeoTec 3 on these fronts despite the weight savings a race helmet is expected to produce.

The Neotec 3 comes with the optional chin curtain fitted which is something I have tested with my race helmet and found to help reduce helmet lift and buffeting and as per my X-Sprit Pro I haven’t had any issue with either of these problems unlike I would find with my previous X-Spirit under certain conditions. Which certainly points to the amount of work Shoei puts into its wind testing along with listening to their customer feedback.

I found the quick close/release ratchet strap system to be easily operated with a gloved hand unlike a standard double ring set up.

The flip up operation of the helmet, and integrated sun visor are also easily operated by a gloved hand and their locations are also very intuitive to locate and use. Something I found myself doing during my longest test ride. It being a breezy, overcast day with damp but drying conditions the sun visor came in handy for the moments the sun found its way through the clouds which was usually at the most inopportune times.

The sun visor seems to provides the same level of light reduction as the light smoke visor I use for racing which still affords the ability to spot damp parts/tarmac differences of the road which I personally prefer over a dark visor that does provide more direct sun light reduction .

As someone who suffers from hay fever I often find there are days when I’m out riding where the overwhelming need to be able to itch my nose or a part of my face, often has me trying to do so through an open visor with limited success. This is where the flip up played its first ace for me by being able to almost instantly deal with the irritant at hand. I also found it refreshing and easier to ride through villages and towns with the helmet open instead of fiddling to open the visor and shut the visor to keep cooler with the limited air flow being forced through the various vents at the low speeds urban riding provides.

The flip up continued to impress during group rides to be able to easily communicate with the other riders during the many ‘which way to go/shall we stop’ type of interactions that are usually painfully attempted to execute with lots of shouting, hand gestures before finally admitting defeat and having to dismount and walk over to the other parties. By simply being able to see your full face the power of lip reading seemed to come into play with excellent results.

The NeoTec 3 also has a fully removable, washable and customisable for size/fit lining as per the X-Spirit range and is ready to receive Shoei’s own Comlink intercom system.

The NeoTec 3 is a good looking helmet, echoing the XSpirit style and I believe unless it was pointed out it would be unknown to the majority of motorcycle riders as being a flip up model. Another big positive in my book.

In conclusion and as much as it pains me to say that given the choice between my race helmet and a NeoTec 3 for anything other than racing, it would be the NeoTec 3 that I’d be putting on for the ride. Which leads me to the question….have I finally grown up?!

Unleashing the Roaring Elegance: A Joyful Journey with Honda CB1000R Black Edition

Are naked bikes like the Honda CB1000R Black Edition classed as a Modern Classic or Retro bike?

That is the question, that said we going to include them it does have neo sports cafe in the naming by Honda. To quote British GQ “It’s a naked sports bike dressed up to look both modern (that’s the “Neo” bit) and retro (that’s the “Café” bit) at the same time”

As soon as I laid my eyes on the bike I like what I saw, the extra black trimmings and beautiful dark blue tank certainly make it stand out from the standard editions. Whilst out testing and taking photos someone stopped to admire the bike and said they own a previous model of this bike and he said “Basically it’s a naked Honda Fireblade” hmm

One of the standout safety features is the Honda Selectable Torque Control, which provides a precise level of intervention to prevent wheel spin and maintain traction. The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) ensures optimal braking performance, even in challenging conditions. With these advanced safety features, the CB1000R offers the perfect balance between performance and protection.

The CB1000R is not just a powerful and aggressive machine; it’s also designed to provide optimal comfort for the rider. Its ergonomics have been carefully crafted to promote a relaxed riding position, minimizing fatigue during long rides.

The sculpted seat offers excellent support and comfort, while the adjustable handlebars allow riders to customize their riding position. Every detail, from the positioning of the foot pegs to the shape of the fuel tank, has been meticulously designed to ensure maximum comfort without compromising performance.

The CB1000R’s agile handling is a result of its lightweight chassis, low center of gravity, and advanced suspension system. Whether navigating tight city streets or conquering winding mountain roads, this motorcycle responds with precision and finesse.

The combination of a nimble chassis, responsive throttle, and precise steering makes the CB1000R a joy to ride. I have truly enjoyed my time with the bike and I can say the Honda CB1000R Black Edition is not for the faint-hearted.

Conclusion
The Honda CB1000R Black⁤ Edition is a visually stunning and performance-driven⁢ motorcycle that truly stands out from the crowd. Its alluring design, with its captivating black aesthetic, is bound⁢ to turn heads wherever it goes (and it did).‍

Paired ‌with its thrilling performance and advanced technology, the Honda CB1000R Black Edition is‍ the epitome of⁣ a midnight⁢ marvel, combining beauty, power, ⁢and functionality into one remarkable package. The black edition is head and shoulders better looking than the standard version but as I’m not a fan of chrome I’m biased.

Vantrue F1 Motorcycle Dash-Cam

Our colleague Ells at Ride and Rest has spent the last couple of weeks with the Vantrue F1 Motorcycle dash-cam

First impressions – The packaging and presentation are worthy of an apple product, it’s a small matter I know but when a company presents its stuff to the end user it gives a warm fuzzy feeling to see this? Yep, I’m a packaging pest! 😊 I also like a sticker or two!

What’s in the box then? The base unit, two cameras, battery connections, the necessary leads, instructions, remote device, cable ties, sticker pads, screwdriver, screws, etc.

The only thing I did need to provide was a micro-SD card to fit into the unit.

Installation – I watched a couple of videos about this before attempting it myself. Unsure if the guys doing said vids were a bit bone but I had it all done within an hour and a half. At least 45 minutes of that time was trying to find a suitable site for the front facing 4k camera. The MST’s* front end is quite angular and it still needs a tweak to get spot on. I will mention in this section about the sticker pads provided for both cameras and the remote unit… utterly USELESS! I have had to remove the supplied pads and use some genuine 3M stickers to get the right result. As stated above though it did come with some screws so I may utilise these also. The rear will be easy as I can screw straight into the Givi top box rack. The front is a bit more problematic though so needs a bit more thought before I attempt.

Set Up – Easy, download the app, sync app with base unit, away you go. Absolutely no dramas at all. Took perhaps a minute to establish the connection first time. Subsequent syncing takes seconds.

Mobile App – simple, easy, intuitive. Browse through your files – both cams loop on 1-minute intervals, cut, crop, delete, there and then in app, or simply download to your phone for later use on video editing suites. Whilst on this subject – each video taken (front and rear) is time and date, lat’ and long’, elevation, speed stamped. So be careful with the right wrist as it may get thee in trouble with the fiveO!

Camera quality – I’ve got an Insta360 X3 which just blows my mind every time I use it, the image quality is better than that of the Vantrue F1 however it is a dedicated sports cam, so I must remind myself that they are not comparable.  The quality of the Vantrue cams is very good, 4k front is superb, 1080p rear is also pretty good. I haven’t encountered any mucky weather yet this week, so when I do I will have to give the lenses a booghie before setting off.

Summary
Smart, quality, simple to use and it could be invaluable if the worst were to happen one day. Once it is installed it just fire and forget until you have a notable incident. I captured a van driver on Thursday who very nearly caused a 3-car pile-up due to his stupidity and lack of concentration. I would have been involved also if my spider senses were not so keen, so in that scenario it is a very useful tool for those who rely on their motorcycles daily to get to and from work. Of course it will not prevent an accident but the footage quality would be very useful for a courtroom situation, insurance claim, etc.

Roaring with Majesty: A Royal Enfield Classic 350

Many thanks to Lucy at Shellwood Blake and Royal Enfield UK these past two weeks I have manage to quality time with the Royal Enfield Classic 350. This will be my first experience with a Royal Enfield and on the whole it was enjoyable.

The Royal Enfield brand has a rich heritage dating back to the year 1901 when it was first established here in England. Since then, it has become one of the oldest motorcycle manufacturers in the world.

The company’s commitment to craftsmanship and quality has earned it a loyal fan base globally. In 1955, the iconic Indian company, Madras Motors, acquired the Royal Enfield brand, making it an integral part of the Indian motorcycle industry. The Royal Enfield Classic 350 has been in production since 2008.

One of the defining features of the Classic 350 is its exquisite design, which seamlessly blends classic aesthetics with modern-day engineering. Inspired by the post-war era motorcycles, the Classic 350 exudes a vintage charm that is hard to resist.

From its timeless fuel tank design to its vintage-style headlamp and exhaust, every element of this motorcycle reflects meticulous attention to detail. Despite its retro design, the Classic 350 incorporates modern technologies such as an dual channel ABS, LED tail lights, and an electric start, ensuring a perfect balance between nostalgia and contemporary functionality.

It has a low-slung, comfortable seat that is perfect for long journeys for the rider but also for the pillion. The handlebars are ergonomically designed to provide a comfortable grip and the footpegs are adjustable to suit your riding style.

Furthermore, the distinct thump of the Royal Enfield exhaust has become synonymous with the Classic 350, ensuring that heads turn wherever it goes. With its stylish instrument cluster, including a speedometer and odometer, the Classic 350 offers modern conveniences while maintaining its classic allure.

Beyond its classic looks, the Classic 350 packs a punch when it comes to performance. The all new Royal Enfield Classic 350 offers ample torque with 20.2 BHP @ 6100 RPM and 27 Nm @ 4000 rpm. Assembled with a twin downtube spine frame for a comfortable ride, 350 cc single cylinder, fuel injected air cooled engine, 13 litres of fuel capacity, a ground clearance of 170 mm and single and dual channel ABS.

In Conclusion
The Classic 350 is a great choice for riders who want a classic-style motorcycle with modern safety features. It has a comfortable seat, a good engine, and a number of safety features that make it a great choice. My only personal gripe is the gap between the foot peg and gear shift is small and as such I couldn’t wear my favorite boots as I struggled to change gear.

What I also like about it is (like the BSA Gold Star I rode last week) the Classic 350 isn’t dripping in chrome (anyone who know me knows not a fan of loads of chrome). I think the 350 is a perfect city commuter bike especially for someone who has just passed their test or has short legs or doesn’t like a big heavy bike.

Reviving Greatness: Exploring the Timeless Charm of the BSA Gold Star

Many thanks to Alfs Motorcycles (particularly Mick) in Worthing, West Sussex for the loan of bike for the day. Just to emphasise Alf’s Motorcycles are now BSA as well as Kawasaki dealers and have a new dedicated showroom in the rear of the premises.

Normally would get a couple of weeks to spend with review bike but today I spent the day with the 2022 BSA Gold Star that said it was plenty of time to get an idea of the bike. I love the look, colour and feel of the Gold Star,  I’m not a huge fan of chrome and its used pretty sparingly on this bike. Whilst I can appreciate modern bikes with their TFT screens that look like the starship Enterprise there’s just something reassuring about old fashioned speedos. The BSA transports you back in time to the golden days of British motorcycling (no I wasn’t alive then) but without the dread of reliability issues.

The Gold Star can trace its roots back to the original of the 1930s, there is something magical about embracing the timeless allure of a classic motorcycle. The Gold Star is back with a bang, paying homage to its legendary predecessors whilst introducing innovative features that cater to the demands of today’s motorcycle enthusiasts.

Underneath its elegant exterior, the 2022 BSA Gold Star boasts a powerful engine that delivers exceptional performance. Equipped with a high-performance liquid-cooled 45bhp, 652cc single cylinder DOHC, 4v engine, this motorcycle offers a thrilling riding experience. The advanced technology incorporated in the engine ensures smooth acceleration and optimal fuel efficiency. AGV K1 – Warmup Matt Black / Red

My first impression of the looks of the AGV K1 – Warmup Matt Black/Red is positive, whilst I’m not a huge fan of matt black I have to admit I am warming up to it (not pun intended). My first initial fitting I was expecting the usual tight fit and eventual new helmet ache I was pleasantly surprised there was none of that. The interior of the helmet feels comfortable, it features Dry-Comfort soft removable interior crown and cheek pads

One thing I did noticed is its lightweight, whilst it’s not the lightest in the AGV range it comes in at 1.500g. The helmet features a lightweight shell made from a combination of high resistance thermoplastic. This combination of materials provides superior protection against impacts and abrasion. The shell also features an aerodynamic design that reduces drag and improves stability while riding.

The helmet is marketed as sport helmet for everyday riding market but doesn’t come with an internal dark visor for those sunny days  we do get in the UK. Therefore I had to wear my sunglasses but I usually do anyway so wasn’t a bugbear for me personally. The visor is easily opened (unlike some) whilst wearing gloves either while riding or at the traffic lights.

The field of view is 190° with a wider lateral and vertical field of vision giving you better visibility whilst on your ride.

The interior of the helmet is comfortable to wear and it has quick-release pull straps on each side in case of an accident and a D-ring strap. There are five front vents on the helmet and 2 rear extractors.

Overall, the AGV K1 is an excellent choice for riders of all levels. It offers superior protection and comfort, making them an ideal choice for riders of all levels. The only con for some riders is it does not come with an internal sun visor.

The AGV K1 is now my go to helmet..

Triumph Thruxton RS Review

Many thanks to Triumph UK I spent three weeks with this beautiful machine which culminated with The Distinguished Gentlemans Ride in West Sussex.

As it come down the ramp my first impression is it’s a well made, beautiful looking and throaty sounding modern classic bike, here my quick review.

The Triumph Thruxton has been an iconic motorcycle since its first release in the 60’s. The Thruxton was named after the famous Thruxton Circuit, where Triumph had a lot of success. Fast forward to today, and the latest version of the Thruxton, the RS, is a modern classic that pays homage to its rich history while incorporating the latest technology and engineering.

The Thruxton RS is powered by a 1200cc parallel-twin engine that produces 103 horsepower, this engine is mated to a six-speed transmission and is capable of reaching a stated top speed of 140 mph.

The Thruxton RS has a classic design that is inspired by the original Thruxton café racer. It features a low-slung café racer-style seat (no pillion), a classic round headlight, and a sleek fuel tank. The bike also features a modern digital instrument cluster, LED lighting, and a single-sided swingarm.

The engine is ready to unleash its power whenever you command it to do so and the sporty suspension setup further enhances the riding experience, especially along the tricky bends. The rear Ohlins dampers are adjustable and combined with the front Showa forks, the bike delivers quite a planted ride on uneven surfaces despite its suspension being oriented towards athletic characteristics.

The Thruxton RS is equipped with a range of modern features that make it a great choice for riders who want a classic look with modern performance. Suffice to say that Thruxton RS would be easy to manage in the dense city areas, but it is on the highways where it truly shines. The bike also has a range of rider aids, including ABS, and a traction control system.

The Thruxton RS is a great choice for riders who want a powerful and stylish motorcycle. Its classic café racer styling is sure to turn heads, while its modern features and powerful engine make it a great choice for both experienced and novice riders. With its combination of power and style, the Triumph Thruxton RS is sure to be a hit with riders of all levels.

My Conclusion
Overall, the Triumph Thruxton RS ticks all the vital boxes and delivers great value for its price which may seem a bit on the higher side to some, but the flawless finishing and the fun riding experience make up for it.

As for the riding experience, the Thruxton RS combines the best of both aggressive riding experience and traditional café racer goodness. If you’re looking for a classic cafe racer look with modern features, then the Thruxton RS is an obvious choice.

Like with the Triumph Bobber this is a naked bike so once you take it above say 50 mph you will get buffeted about. You could invest in their Dolphin fairing but personally I think it ruins the looks but each to their own.

The Triumph Thruxton RS is now officially my 2nd favourite modern classic coming in a very close 2nd to the Triumph Bonneville Bobber.

Thanks to Ells from Ride and Rest for his insta 360 footage whilst in the DGR

As earlier stated I took part in the The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in West Sussex for the first time. To be perfectly honest I’m not a group rider more of a solo rider, I like to go at my own pace so I was apprehensive at taking part in the DGR. I have to say I really enjoyed the ride everyone was courteous, no overtaking at speed etc. My only issue on the ride with Thruxton was there was a lot of stop and start due to traffic and found the bike was getting quite hot.

Weise Hydra Jacket and Jeans

In today’s world of ever-changing weather conditions, staying comfortable on the road has become a bit of a challenge. Which is why Weise have created the Hydra Jacket and Jeans range, designed to help you tackle every kind of riding conditions in style.

To begin with, both the jacket and the jean have quite a minimalist design and the only patterns that exist are there for a purpose and to add to the practicality of the gear. No matter whether you have a supersport, café racer or adventure motorbike, the Hydra pair would go well with all of them.

The thick full-grain leather speaks for itself and the waterproof liner is right up there as well. The harsh winters can be a real bummer for seasoned riders but the accompanying gilet makes for a great insulating layer underneath the jacket. Maneuverability is another area where the Hydra jacket and the jean excel. The stretch panels are located strategically and are ready to provide additional support whenever necessary.

The thought of thick full-grain leather and the gilet may have built an image of a winter exclusive gear but worry not the gillet is removable, also there are ample vent panels and the leather too is perforated in multiple areas for better ventilation

The jacket and jeans are also designed with CE-approved armor in key impact areas to provide maximum protection in the event of a crash. All the critical areas including shoulder, elbow, back, knee and hip are protected by removable and certified armour that add to safety as well as versatility. The reflective piping and the logo might seem like a mundane touch but they are great secondary protection in darker conditions.

For those of you who love a snug fitting, you will absolutely love the Hydra gear. Since both the jacket and jeans are made to go together, there is a connecting zip at the bottom stretch panel provides a convenient and secure way of connecting both together. Overall, the gear is designed to provide riders with a comfortable and enjoyable ride, no matter the conditions.

Weise are a UK-based company that has been producing top-quality motorcycle gear for over 30 years. Their Hydra Gear line is a stylish and practical choice for riders who demand the best in protection, comfort, and performance.

Summary
Whether you’re a novice or seasoned rider, the Weise Hydra Jacket and Jeans help you look good and feel great on the road, no matter the conditions. Here’s what you get with this offer:

• Flexible and breathable fabrics
• A waterproof, wind proof and breathable construction
• An adjustable waistband and cuffs
• Mesh lining to wick away moisture
• 3M reflective logos
• Classy PU leather panels

My Conclusion

The Weise Hydra Jacket and Jeans are the ideal clothing choice for riders looking for a stylish, comfortable and practical way to tackle the elements. From the high-spec fabrics, to the aesthetically pleasing design, Weise’s Hydra collection will help you upgrade your ride in no time.

LS2 Explorer Plus Helmet Review

Maja Kenney of Maja’s Motorcycle Adventures reviews the LS2 Explorer Plus (Off-Road) Helmet.

Having ventured into the world of adventure motorcycling I needed a new helmet to match the activity and of course, my new adventure bike, too!

The first impression was a very positive one even before I took the helmet out of the box. The packaging itself is well thought out, with good design. The helmet itself is packed in the usual drawstring bag and as a bonus, it also comes with a carry bag. That’s my flight carry-on sorted. It also comes with an inflatable helmet ring for when you are fitting the comms to the helmet, removing the peak or the visor and generally storing it.

The helmet also comes with a pinlock and a set of blanking plates to use when the peak comes off. I love that about the helmet, I can use it with or without the peak depending on the type of riding I want to do. The removal of the peak is very easy, you need an allen key that comes in the box with the helmet and a Phillips screwdriver (you have to use your own) to remove the screw holding the peak in place at the top of the helmet. It took me 10 minutes to remove it the first time because I took a while to figure out how to take out the blanking plate at the top without breaking it (it just snaps in and out of the mount) but subsequent times the whole process took only a few minutes. I really like the sturdiness of the mounts and that you need to screw the visor in place, it feels much easier and not as flimsy as it does with the plastic systems on some other helmets.

The only thing I have noticed after using the helmet for a few weeks is that the rubber that seals the visor at the top seems to be rubbing against the pinlock when you open and close the visor. My pinlock now has visible markings at the sides. This is more of a cosmetic annoyance as it doesn’t impair the vision itself.

The look itself is quite aggressive, with the chin piece coming up very high and this does mean I had to slightly tilt my head down to see the bike’s dials (compared to the road helmets I have). However, it comes with a very wide side view which helps with the periphery vision.

With every new helmet, I know to expect it to be tight for the first few rides, some take a while to ‘bed in’ and stop giving me a tension headache. I was delighted to find out that the fit is excellent and even after wearing it for a good three hours on the first ride, I’ve almost forgotten I am wearing a brand new helmet.

The LS2 Explorer fits perfectly around the crown of my head and it squeezes my cheeks in place. There is plenty of space around the lower jaw and chin area which makes it easy to talk to your riding buddies if you are connected with intercoms or just to sing out loud happy tunes. Some helmets can make me feel a little bit claustrophobic if they are too tight around the chin area, especially on long rides. I love the LS2 fit because even after a full day’s riding I don’t feel confined in the helmet and at the same time I feel very safe.

The foam in the helmet is laser cut, and the inside is hypoallergenic and breathable. The liner is washable and the helmet comes with a chin curtain for the colder rides to keep the wind away from your neck. As per my previous point, even with the chin curtain the movement of my jaw is not restricted.

The helmet is made out of carbon fibre composite and weighs 1400 grams which is very light indeed. It is ECE 22.06 compliant and DOT certified and is manufactured in 3 shells to ensure a good fit across different sizes. The sizes range from XS to 2XL and it is a long oval shape.

There are several vents to help keep you cool, a chin vent, two at the top of the helmet and two side vents or exhaust ports. Thanks to their design, they are super easy to open/close with a gloved hand.

To ensure good protection the chin strap is reinforced, and it fastens with the double D Ring. Personally, I really like the colour and the finish of the D Rings, too. The helmet also comes with an emergency release system.

The visor is scratch resistant and the helmet also comes with an internal dark sun visor. I wish the sun visor would drop down a little lower to give you fewer lines in your field of vision  This is especially important for me as I have to wear spectacles when riding and the rims of my specs already clutter the view.

Having worn the helmet on three long days of green laning I am very pleased with the fit, the comfort and the look. Equally on roads, it handles the wind really well, the peak doesn’t pull your head backward when you look up. It is fairly quiet although not the quietest one I’ve ever tried. There is minimum lining covering the comms speakers which I like because I can hear the sound much better than in some other helmets.

I had the opportunity to take the helmet on a trip to Spain for three days and as I was hiring a street bike, I left the peak at home. The performance of the helmet was impressive in 25-degree Celsius weather where the many vents really made a big difference to my comfort. You can feel the air coming into the helmet from the vents on top and that helps keep your head cool. I found it quite easy to take the helmet off and back on at stops.

The best bit is that, as mentioned before, the helmet comes with a carry bag which made for the perfect carry-on bag on the flight. The helmet itself is light and the bag is big enough to allow me to fit inside my cameras to record the rides, a book, glasses and a few other bits and pieces for the flight.

Overall I find the LS2 helmet delivered more than I expected from a brand I wasn’t very familiar with. It offers great value for money with all the safety features and certification and the real bonus is the superior build and finish quality of the helmet. At £320 mark this helmet definitely feels more premium than its price tag.

RST Casual Motorcycle Wear

With a look towards spring/summer riding on this test we decided on some more casual wear rather than standard leather or textile jackets and trouser we have done in the past.

With many thanks to RST, you can see RST’s new 2023 collection on their website. We went for RST Lumberjack shirt, RST tapered fit (black) jeans, RST Roadster gloves and RST Roadster boots.

Motorcycle apparel has come a long way both in terms of safety as well as style. thats said one aspect that riders often complain about is the overall weight of leathers which can weigh down on them, especially on longer rides or whilst off the bike. You could say the weight of the gear is associated with its quality, the heavier the better it will be at protecting the rider. While this is certainly true, there is no denying that lighter and more breathable alternatives are becoming increasingly popular among riders.

Winning the trust of most motorcyclists amongst such alternatives are reinforced textile shirts and jeans. These may look like everyday worn garments but their clever construction and the quality of materials used allow them to withstand impacts that their everyday-worn peers would simply succumb to. We decided to try out a different combination of safety gear during a brief ride during a break in the weather.

As previously stated we decided to opt on the RST Lumberjack textile shirt together with their tapered-fit textile jean, the Roadster gloves and Roadster boots.

Starting with my RSTxKevlar red checkered shirt, I will admit I was a bit skeptical at first. Nevertheless I decided to go for it, and suffice to say I was pleasantly surprised. The overall composure and freedom I attained were unprecedented. Not only was it comfy enough to wear around but its sturdy yet soft construction allowed enough maneuverability. On the surface, the checkered shirt seems like any other shirt you’d wear around but as they say, the devil lies in the details.

Stitched neatly underneath the back and front sides are protector pockets that allow for easy insertion of protective pads whenever needed. Even with the protectors added, the fitting was quite relaxed, and I never felt trapped inside the shirt. Aside from protecting the vulnerable chest and back, there is also an arrangement for shoulder and elbow armor that also feel sturdy and firmly in place. Both these armors are CE Level 1 certified, just in case you only buy certified products. Last but not least is the closing mechanism that relies on the combination of rugged zip-line buttons to ensure extra protection in case of an impact.

As for my RST tapered fit textile jeans, it too worked quite well. The tapered fit may not be the favorite fit for many riders. The key reason for suggesting so is the fact that it hugs your legs pretty firmly from the bottom where the wind deflection is the highest. The stretchable construction allows for easy breathability and dangling your leg is as comfortable as you can possibly think of. Just like the RST Lumber shirt, there are provisions for armor in vulnerable areas. All the armor is CE Level 1 certified and is provided in all the key areas you can think of. Both the RST Lumberjack textile shirt and the tapered jeans are available in several color combinations. Aside from that, both are also covered by RST’s 12-month warranty, providing you with a sense of security that your hard-earned money wouldn’t go in vain.

Now onto my selection for gloves and boots, the RST Roadster gloves may not be the ideal choice in chilly weather as they are a more summer glove (especially for someone for suffers from raynaud’s). Just like the Lumberjack shirt and the jeans, the Roadster gloves too seem as if they don’t provide any layer of security but a deeper look would reveal to you a solid knuckle protector and a sleek motion panel that keeps the gloves in a static position once you’ve donned them. Since these gloves have been made to go with the Roadster jacket, therefore, they are available in matching leather and colour to the jacket.

It would be unfair not to mention the RST Roadster boots that were also accompanying me during my ride. Being someone who wears Doc Martens when not on the bike the boots weren’t much of a dramatic change. I agree that the boots look more like work boots than riding boots but the additional reinforcing leather strap on the toe box instantly gives away the real identity of these boots. The thick sole has a deep grip pattern engraved upon it thus allowing for confident walks and rides on slippery surfaces. Crafted to go with the RST Kevlar jeans, the Roadster boots are thus a natural fit with any casual riding outfit. The availability in both vintage brown and glossy black colors enhances the versatility, a characteristic long attributed to RST motorcycle gear.

Weise Redwood Shirt

Leather jackets aren’t every rider’s cup of tea and many prefer to opt for lighter and summer-friendly gear. The classic check shirt by Weise is a great solution for any rider who does not want to don a heavy leather jacket while ensuring optimal protection when riding.

The shirt may look like just another casual shirt but as they say, looks can be deceiving which certainly applies in this case. Weise’s Redwood shirt doesn’t only make a good fashion statement but at the same time is abrasion-resistant and comfy enough for long rides. The combed cotton used in conjunction with a mesh lining inside makes the shirt a joy to wear on hot and humid days which are becoming quite frequent with each passing year.

Hiding neatly beneath the soft cotton of the shirt are shoulder and elbow protectors that are both Level 2 CE-approved. These protectors are further complemented by a durable Level-1 back protector that doesn’t bulge like the protector often seen on leather jackets. In addition to the various protection pads, a great but subtle secondary protection measure has also been incorporated into the shirt. The front buttons are supported by a central zipper that ensures the shirt remains firmly hugged to you under intense situations.

Weise casual riding shirt can easily be integrated with your existing protective gear. The two setting levels provided on the cuffs make it a breeze to wrap your gloves around them and the connection on the bottom inside will seamlessly attach to almost any motorbike trouser you currently have in your possession. Last but certainly not the least of the practical features are the pockets that are designed as such to hold your belongings firmly inside themselves, even during high-speed maneuvers and sudden braking impacts.

The casual motorbike riding shirt by Weise is highly versatile since it can be comfortably used for cycling, motocross, and skateboarding as well. Many would prefer the signature red/black color, but if it isn’t to your liking you can go with other color combinations of black/white or just subtle black. There’s a good chance you may also be able to get the shirt in either blue, green, or brown color. In addition to a variety of colors, you can get the shirt in pretty much any size. From small to 5x large, there are a host of size variations to choose from. All in all, you are getting a pretty good riding shirt for just a smidge above a hundred quids.

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR Review

Maja Kenney of Maja’s Motorcycle Adventures spends a week with the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR with many thanks to Triumph Motorcycles UK

I must admit, the first impression of seeing the new Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR online when it was launched last year didn’t impress me. The headlight and the front fairing just didn’t do it for me. Seeing that the launch was very track-focused left me even less interested as that’s not the kind of riding I do.

However, when asked if I’d like to test it for a few days I jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t? I knew it was a fast, high-performance motorcycle and I was keen to see for myself just how justified all the hype around it was.

It was delivered to my house one February morning, the clouds were dark and hanging low and there was rain in the air. The roads were wet and I wasn’t keen to get out on the bike in such conditions. So we spent some time getting to know each other in the garage instead. Whilst the headlight and the front end still didn’t make me stare at it in awe, I sure was smitten by the rest of the bike.

The Crystal White colour is stunning and really works well with the contrasting black frame and carbon fibre components and I really like the shiny speckles added to the paintwork. It almost shimmers in a certain light, especially when a ray of sunshine broke through the cloud when I finally took it out.

Every detail on the bike is well designed. From the smart branding to the pegs and the single-sided swingarm, it all fits together pleasantly on the eye. After a while of having the bike in the garage and riding it, I even started to like the headlight and the fairing around it. I had to admit it’s grown on me.

The LED bright display is tucked under the front screen, it seems slightly on the small side (5”) but once you’re on the bike and riding, the display is well arranged and clear to see. I did spend some time figuring out how to display general information such as total miles on the bike. There are many buttons on each side of the handlebars so I spent some time getting familiar with them.

When I eventually went for a ride I felt a bit intimidated to start with. Partly because the tires fitted to the bike were Pirelli Supercorsas with hardly any grip, partly because of the very aggressive riding position and partly because it’s a 1200 cc sportsbike with 177 bhp which is way more than you need to legally ride on public roads.

The tyres worried me because this was February, the roads had several layers of grit and grease on them and I knew I had to be careful when leaning the bike into a corner.

So I gingerly set off, adjusting my brain to the new riding position. The clip-on handlebars are fairly comfortable and your knees are not exactly around your ears but it is still an aggressive riding position. The seat feels soft and squidgy to the touch but after 20 minutes of riding the bike I sure felt it in my back and my backside.

It didn’t help that I was wearing layers of clothing as the temperature hovered around 5 degrees Celsius and that made the sporty riding position a bit uncomfortable.

Still, I must admit, it put a huge smile on my face as soon as we had gotten comfortable with each other. For the first ride, I opted for a dual carriageway to Chester and a city bimble to meet a friend for lunch on the riverbank. The bike sat happily on the A55 cruising at 70 mph and even the wind wasn’t a problem. The cruise control helps keep the speed steady and it gives your wrist a break, too.

Once we hit the city traffic it rumbled patiently at the lights and stayed at the speed limit running smoothly. The quick shifter worked brilliantly even at low revs. It sure turned a few heads as I parked by the river and enjoyed a delicious lunch.

The bike is keyless and as I’m not used to this, it felt odd at first to walk away without having to remove the keys from the ignition. It took a bit of getting used to working out how to lock the steering. A few days later I spent a good few minutes trying to unlock the steering in a car park and get the engine started, much to the amusement of the elderly couple sitting in their car watching me.

Feeling happier and more confident on the bike, the next ride was a slightly more spirited on one of the wonderful winding roads of the less populated Welsh countryside. The good side of a mid-week February ride means there aren’t many cars around and definitely no bikes so the roads I wanted to ride were quiet. The bike sounds wonderful when you open the throttle and the quick shifter changes the gears up or down so smoothly. Riding into a corner is easy, the bike leans effortlessly and makes you feel faster than you actually are. Or at least that was the case for me.

With the roads greasy I kept the bike in the rain mode. There are 5 riding modes, rain, road, sport, track and rider. The bike is really light and low, too. It weighs less than 200 kg when fully filled up and I can reach the floor easily with my feet flat on the ground. All this means the bike is easy to manoeuvre when stationary, in the garage or when parking in an awkward space.

What a brilliant bike if you are looking for a spirited ride or a road legal track day toy so you can ride there and back, too. It turns heads everywhere you go and it’s a great conversation starter. A capable bike that can be sensible on the road, too. And if you are wondering, I have taken to that retro round headlight and fairing after being around it for over two weeks.

Triumph Bonneville Bobber Review

Can you fall in love with an inanimate object? some say you can. As soon as I set eyes on the Triumph Bonneville Bobber it was love at first sight, it even came in my favourite cherry red.

Few two-wheelers have the honor of being as cool & iconic as the Bonneville Bobber. The Bonneville has enjoyed a sacred reputation amongst the enthusiasts; however, the latest upgrades have made it considerably more attractive. It exudes a retro cruiser charm whilst fulfilling all the modern-day standards including but not limited to the emissions standards. As with any other Triumph two-wheeler, the Bonneville Bobber also boasts an impeccable built quality that is visible from afar. The all-new 1200cc British icon infuses a breath of fresh air into a motorbike industry that is fast running out of classic-era machines, leaving the enthusiasts with little choices to quench their thirst.

As an avid fan of retro-inspired motorbikes, I was eager to try the latest iteration of the Bonneville Bobber. The previous version has still got quite a respectable space in my heart for the authenticity and the riding pleasure it provides, however, it lacks some of the modern amenities which many of the riders have now got accustomed to. The 2021 version retains the instantly recognizable charisma of the Bobber lineup all the while featuring subtle changes that are quite apparent but they, in no way, diminish the charm a Bonneville Bobber is known for. The front & rear fenders are still absent and the ignition switch, to this date, is mounted beneath the fuel tank of the bike. All this means that only the crucial creature comforts have been included in the new version. In fact, the minimalist DNA of the Bobber lineup still continues here with the rider seat being the sole seat available and a bulging engine & exhaust pipes that are purposefully exposed to execute a typical cruiser personality.

Despite the minimalist theme going all around the bike, the Bobber still has a wet weight of nearly 250kg which is not light by any stretch of the imagination. Nonetheless, the riding dynamics have been designed as such to maximize the riding pleasure and ease of riding around town. The planted riding experience is also helped in part by the purpose-built chubby front & rear wheels that are accompanied by the Showa folks and spoke rims. The spoke rims look phenomenal especially in contrast with the color schematics of the Bonneville Black which I had the pleasure of riding for a brief moment. The ergonomics have been well organized since the neutral riding stance and easy-to-reach & adjustable controls make the motorbike a sheer pleasure to drive. The seat only looks a bit uncomfortable from a distance, but its aluminum construction leaves plenty of room for padding. Behind the seat is a nicely hidden mono-shock that works like a charm on paved & slightly uneven surfaces.

As mentioned earlier, a host of modern amenities have been integrated that are complemented by LED lights all around the bike. The amenities themselves include cruise control, traction control, ride-by-wire throttle, dual-channel ABS, though, the front calipers are Brembo and the rear one is Nisin. Nevertheless, the whole brake package is potent enough to provide plenty of stopping power even on damp surfaces. The 1200cc powerplant is a twin-parallel setup that churns out 77 hp and approximately 106Nm of peak torque. Since the peak torque is available at a lower RPM band, therefore, the Bonneville Bobber is quite capable for city rides and short commutes. Conversely, long rides can feel a bit underwhelming since the 250 kg weight in conjunction with high wind resistance really makes the bike struggle to move ahead. Other than that, the riding experience, as a whole, is quite comfortable and enjoyable.

A major part of extensive improvements for the new Bobber includes a bigger fuel tank, improved fuel economy figures & better compliance to modern emission standards. The fuel tank has been enlarged to accommodate 12L of fuel which is a 25% improvement over its predecessor. This, combined with a claimed fuel average of 61mpg (4.6L/100km) makes the new model cover more miles without having you make a stopover at a nearby fuel station. Though, the improvements in the emissions department may not be to everyone’s liking. The Bobber may now be compliant with Euro-5 emissions standards, but its exhaust note isn’t as deep and loud as the previous version. Nevertheless, it is a commendable feat by Triumph since the air-fuel mixture is still fed by a carburetor.

To sum it all up, Triumph has done an excellent job with the all-new Bonneville Bobber. It retains all the essential hallmarks of its predecessor and also the top-notch built quality that is synonymous with all the offerings by Triumph. The price may seem a bit steep to some, but you will only realize its true worth when you take a personal look and test drive.

This bike to an old sport bike lover like myself is gorgeous through spending a fair bit of time on Triumphs recently my taste is changing from speed to a more comfortable ride. Ii I had the money I would be the first in the queue to purchase one.

RST Maverick Textiles, Pathfinder Boots and Paragon Gloves Review

Maja Kenney of Maja’s Motorcycle Adventures spends her Slovenian tour testing out some RST Waterproof kit. The kit features RST Maverick Textiles, Pathfinder Touring Boots and Paragon Gloves kindly supplied for this test by RST Moto

On this year’s motorcycle tour to Slovenia I had the opportunity to test the RST Maverick ladies jacket and jean together with their Pathfinder touring boots and Paragon gloves.

The textiles are cleverly layered and are suitable for all-year riding. The outer layer has air pockets that can be clipped open for summer rides as well as perforation on the upper body. There are four ventilation pockets, two on the leg and two on the chest area. You can wear textiles without any layers on those hot and sunny days.

The waterproof layer is separate and acts as windproof, too. It zips neatly inside the main jacket and trousers the only downside is, if you get caught in the rain it’s not a quick fix.

There is a further layer for cold weather riding. A thermal layer that zips in either with the waterproof layer or on its own. The zips are cleverly layered so there is no bulging of the zips sitting too close together. As the inner layers zip into the jacket (and trousers) this means you still only need one zip to close the jacket fully.

Both, the jacket and the jean zip together around the waist to retain the warmth and keep the rain out.

The jean have a high back which sits nicely around the lower back. The waist is adjustable with two velcro straps which might need tweaking depending on how many layers you wear on a cold day. Together with stretch panels, it does make for a good fit. There are two hip pockets with zips.

The jean and the jacket feel a bit stiff for the first couple of wears but they do settle around your body nicely and feel very comfortable.

I felt the trouser leg could have been a tiny bit longer for me. The trouser leg in a size up was perfect for me but the rest of the jean was too big. Not an issue once you put the boots on just my personal preference. Of course, they come with knee protectors and the jean is CE Certified to Level A.

The jacket is well designed and contoured for ladies’ fit. Stretch panels, arm and waist adjusters offer further options to adjust the jacket for comfort and fit. It has several pockets, inside and outside of the jacket as well as a large one on the back of the jacket for storing larger items such as maps, documents or a spare pair of gloves.

The jacket closes with a zip and the textile secures over it with velcro. This is a bit of an annoyance when the jacket is open and you are not riding. The velcro on the left cuffs tends to stick to the velcro next to the zip and so find your left arm getting attached to the jacket a lot. As the jean, the jacket is also CE certified to Level A and comes with Level 1 back protector, shoulder and elbow armour.Personally, I feel the sleeves are a bit too wide around the wrists, too. There is a velcro strap to tighten the cuffs but I find too much textile around my wrists makes it quite uncomfortable. It does mean that the gloves are easy to put on when I wear them inside my sleeves.

The boots are my absolute favourite so far. They really are waterproof. I mean proper, Welsh downpour waterproof. Top marks for that. The boots have two zips at the front, one on each side of the leg which means they are really easy to put on and take off. But more importantly, you can adjust how tightly you want them to fit around your calf. Boots are usually too wide for me but these are a perfect fit thanks to the design. They are incredibly comfortable, too. I wore them for 5 days constantly on the bike and to walk around sights we stopped at. The soles have good grip and I felt secure exploring sights off the paved paths. My feet didn’t even feel tired at the end of the day.

The gloves feel soft and snuggly on the inside. They feel a little big on my fingers and I guess that’s down to all the padding and layers to keep my hands warm. I have summer gloves from RST which are designed for ladies, they are the same size and they fit perfectly. The Paragon waterproof gloves are not specifically designed for ladies’ hands and it shows in sizing. My pair are size 7 or extra small so anyone with smaller hands might find these too big. They are waterproof and they have certainly been tested in the wet!

Overall the whole outfit is excellent value for money. The jacket and jean are suitable for all-year riding, excellent for long touring trips, they will protect you from most weather elements and they fit well. The boots and the gloves will keep you warm and dry in the colder months but will be too hot for the summer months.

Triumph Tiger 900GT Pro Review

Maja Kenney of Maja’s Motorcycle Adventures spends a week with the Triumph Tiger 900GT Pro which includes a two day tour of the Lakes, with many thanks to Triumph Motorcycles UK

The Tiger was dropped off at my house and I took my time walking around it before wheeling it into the garage. It was delivered a day earlier than expected so it had to wait for its first ride until the next day. I circled the bike, looking at all of the details. It was almost a stand off to see if we like each other.

I was pleased to note the colour was red. Having checked it out online I decided that red was the best looking one and now it was in my garage, albeit for a week only. In fact, not just the colour, I quite like the way it looks. Not too big and shouty, it doesn’t look like a bully as some adventure bikes do, and it didn’t fill me with fear that it’ll kick me off when I start to ride it.

I was worried it might be too tall for me but even with the seat at its normal position, I could reach the ground comfortably. Despite this, I have moved the seat to its lower position and that means that at 5”4’, I can almost put both feet flat on the (even) ground. Given my preference for B roads and goat tracks it is safer to have more leg length and be able to stop even where the ground isn’t smooth tarmac.

Top marks for its super smooth gearbox and quickshifter. One of the best I’ve ridden so far. The brakes are sharp, too! And the cruise control is easy to work out but do watch out when you touch the brakes. It slows down rapidly and I got a bit of a shock the first time. I didn’t expect it to slow down quite as fast and ended up with my face a bit too close to the screen for comfort.

Speaking of comfort, this is a good time to mention the heated grips which are excellent and, not forgetting the heated seat. The heated seat has separate controls for the pillion on the side of the pillion seat, and for the rider, on the handlebars. I can’t say there was any benefit to having the seat heated at 15 degrees Celsius and I would like to be able to test this in colder weather before I can decide if it is a worthwhile option. The heated grips, on the other hand, are an absolute must for me. The temperature varied from 10 to 15, occasionally 17 degrees Celsius when the sun was out, but the wind chill was persistent. I was still riding in my summer gloves and the grips were on the whole time. I much prefer this option for as long as I can, before I put on my winter gloves for the season.

One issue I didn’t quite crack is the position of the indicator switch just above a very similar switch that is the OK button for confirming the menu choices. They are close together and feel very similar with gloves on. A couple of times I wasn’t actually indicating but merely pushing the OK button left or right which upset a couple of road users behind me. Speaking to other Tiger owners they mentioned the same and said that once they have gotten used to it, it wasn’t a problem anymore.

I do have a preference for something a bit sportier looking and riding a sports tourer myself, I didn’t really appreciate why one would go for an adventure style bike. After riding the Tiger for a week, and taking it on a real tour for a few days, I now understand. I had to get used to how certain speed feels on this bike which meant I was going faster than intended for a while. With so much wind protection I felt I was going slower where I was actually much faster than anticipated. Oops.

The seating position is so relaxed and comfortable that even after a few days of constant riding I never felt tired quite as much as I normally do. It almost felt wrong. Like a workout when you didn’t try hard enough and you have no muscle ache afterwards. But this was also really, really good. I didn’t need a zimmer frame to get out of bed in the morning or do any elaborate yoga stretches just to feel my toes again.

The surprising bit was the cornering. The Tiger just leans in and carries you around that corner without you having to do much. No fighting with the bike and no convincing it that you really want to go around that bend safely. The Tiger is agile, light and so very smooth.

Then there was the riding on my favourite roads. The less known, little B roads that are inevitably littered with gravel, potholes and livestock. Despite the rugged road surface, the bike shaking was minimal, the suspension doing a fantastic job and I didn’t even need to stand on the footpegs for comfort although I did try it anyway just because I could.

I really appreciated the higher sitting position for the views. Being able to see over the stone walls and into the valley opened up the view and allowed me to take in the sights I would have otherwise missed. It also means you spot the oncoming traffic much sooner and can position the bike accordingly.

The trip away was for two nights only and my luggage was minimal therefore I had no need for the panniers or the topbox. Everything was packed into a rollbag that was attached to the pillion seat. I had to practice a couple of times on how to mount and dismount the bike in the most elegant way but I cracked it and never once kicked the rollbag when dismounting.

Overall I was surprisingly impressed with everything about the bike, how easy and smooth it is to ride and how well we got on. I am not ready to trade in my sports tourer yet but I am leaning towards maybe having a proper adventure bike as a winter one in my garage.

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RS

Triumph is regarded as the leader of the British motorbike industry all around the world and for good reason. The brand’s motorbikes have maintained their classic appeal & top-notch quality to this date that has allowed it to establish a strong fanbase in many regions. Speaking of Triumph’s fanbase, it would be injustice not to discuss my detailed encounter with the legendary Speed Triple 1200 RS that is every bit as fun on the road as it is on the track.

At first glance, the latest Speed Triple 1200 RS looks quite contemporary but at the same time, it manages to remain loyal to its predecessor that too had earmarked its territory in the motorbike industry during its entire reign. The front fascia is almost the same, but the main difference comes in the form of pronounced cuts & creases on the tank and the overall athletic styling that has given the 1200 RS a much-needed uplift. Everything looks perfect in its place thanks to the styling that perfectly complements the overall character and does not try hard at convincing you that it’s the latest iteration of the 1200 RS.

Great styling often comes at the expense of compromised ergonomics, but that is certainly not the case with Triumph’s Speed Triple 1200 RS. The controls are all well within the range and thus do not require any extra effort whether you’re on the road or the track. In fact, you can perfectly toggle around the driving modes & other settings on the go which for me is a deal-breaker. The display might not be the biggest or brightest when compared with the competitors, but it does a decent job at delivering the necessary metrics. Since this is a naked motorbike, therefore, the handlebars are slightly raised and wider, therefore, the turning circle and maneuvering capabilities are a bit compromised.

Riding style and ergonomics are quite closely linked, so let’s talk a bit about the riding style. The 1200 RS is primarily a track-focused machine but at the same, it isn’t a supersport motorbike, therefore, the riding posture is a hybrid in between that of a supersport motorbike and a traditional naked motorbike. The seat height is a bit high, which is great for a tall person like me but people with average height may struggle to get their feet on the asphalt. On the whole, the riding posture is perfect for someone looking for a naked motorbike that is fused with the attributes of a supersport bike.

Undoubtedly, the most prominent feature of the 1200 RS is its high-revving in-line 4-pot engine that delivers almost 180 hp, up by 30 hp from the outgoing generation. The chunky engine loves to rev at high ends and is quick to respond after 3000 RPM. The brilliant high-end pulling power makes it a great track machine, but it in no way means that you will be disappointed with its on-road capabilities. Despite being a Euro-5 compliant engine, its roar is a sheer joy to the ears and I, for one, don’t think that any rider would need to make a switch to an aftermarket exhaust.

The 6-speed gearbox accompanying the 1160cc engine is as smooth as it gets. The quickshifter works like a charm and lets you sweep past each gear effortlessly & swiftly. Apart from its rev-happy powerplant and the butter smooth gearbox, the Triumph 1200 RS has several other aids to offer that make it an excellent road & track machine. The cornering ABS takes micro-seconds to activate, and the riding modes aren’t just there as a formality, each one of them alters the driving dynamics according to your input which provides you with the confidence that the 1200cc monster of a bike can handle any situation, apart from, of course, off-roading tracks.

The riding comfort of naked motorbikes is always tuned to suit urban road conditions; however, bigger displacement naked bikes are somewhat an exception. It’s the same case for Speed 1200 RS, the riding comfort has been delicately calibrated to match the thrilling output of the engine and therefore you would feel some bumps when riding on rough patches. This tradeoff allows superb cornering ability that is also in part to lighter & improved chassis and better weight distribution. The Öhlins dampers are manually adjustable which is kind of a letdown since the rival Ducati has fully electronically adjustable dampers. Nevertheless, the dampers have enough adjustability to match the road conditions which came in handy during my hour-long ride on country roads.

Overall Triumph’s latest iteration of 1200 RS has got everything under its belt to provide you with the thrill you expect from a 1200cc naked behemoth. The impeccable build quality and that too at a reasonable price tag further make this motorbike an enticing option for riders who want the best of both worlds. Not to forget the fact that the bike is also aesthetically attractive which makes it quite a head-turner out on the city streets.

Bell Cruisier 2020 Custom 500 SE DLX

There are only a limited number of motorbike helmet brands that are known for their quality and are a common sight in many races. Bell is one such brand that has a strong following in flagship races especially the F1. The U.S’s top helmet brand manufactures various kinds of helmets but it is its Custom 500 series that enjoys the highest number of sales in the U.S. The best-selling series has received several upgrades over the years and the Cruisier 2020 model is one of its latest variants.

Before this test ride I had never tried a fully open face helmet but with my sunglasses and face covering it felt just the same as wearing my modular helmet.  It’s been almost a month since I have been using this helmet and jotted below is my experience of the Custom 500’s Cruisier.

The great thing about the Custom 500 is its availability in up to five different shell sizes. I love the chequered design on this helmet. The fiberglass composite shell keeps the overall weight quite light which is a great feature for any helmet especially an open face helmet that’s going to be used on longer journeys. Furthermore, there’s a wide range of graphic schemes available, but the one I have has a unique checkmate design complemented by golden & red lines. For me, this is the perfect design since it is neither bland nor overdone and looks quite contemporary unlike many open face helmets commonly used by cruiser riders.

Bell’s Cruisier also fares well when it comes to its interior upholstery’s aesthetics and comfort. The perforated quilted micro suede liner offers ample cushioning and at the same time forms a perfect wind barrier. The wind whistle is nicely damped at motorway speeds and the perforations in the liner does a great job at venting all the heat despite the fact there are no vents on the outer shell. Bell has also given due attention to smaller details such as the pull tab and the goggle strap, both of which are wrapped in real leather which, as a whole, enhance the overall quality feel of the helmet.

The Cruisier 2020 version just like any other model of Custom 500 is DOT ECE certified which is one reason why Bell’s open face helmet made a late entry in the EU. Moreover, the helmet is compatible with dozens of shields & visors, though, I for one believe that an open face helmet is best utilized without a shield or a visor, but in the end, it is up to everyone’s personal choice. Last but certainly not the least, is the free inclusion of a retro leather bag that will be perfect for covering your iconic Bell helmet in case the weather take a turn for the worse.
