Metzeler: the new Extra Soft for extreme enduro makes its debut

The MCE 6 Days Extreme product line for enduro competition is enriched with the addition of a new rear specification in 140/80–18 size designed for the most difficult technical sections and harshest terrain.

MCE 6 Days Extreme, Metzeler’s family of tyres designed for enduro competitions, expands with the introduction of the new Extra Soft rear specification specially developed for extreme enduro races.

The new MCE 6 Days Extreme Extra Soft rear, in 140/80–18 70M NHS size, is a specialist tyre suitable for one-day competitions and special stages. It features a tread compound designed to guarantee maximum performance in extreme conditions from both a technical and environmental point of view, therefore effective even in very low temperatures. Thanks to the high level of grip, the Extra Soft allows riders to tackle even the most difficult obstacles and to restart easily even from a standstill, in the absence of a run-up. Furthermore, the very consistent overall deformation of the carcass guarantees a good level of comfort and makes it an easy tyre to use, even for less experienced riders.

The Extra Soft specification, which visually stands out from the rest of the range due to the presence of three parallel white stripes on the tread, features a new layout of the knobs to ensure optimal performance even at high lean angles, less wear and greater resistance to fatigue. These characteristics are very important in extreme enduro competitions in which the tyre is subjected to cyclical and multidirectional deformations. The compound is also completely new, based on 100% Carbon Black and highly resilient, which means it is capable of absorbing deformation energy. It also has a very wide range of use: working even in very cold temperatures.

The Extra Soft completes the Metzeler range for enduro competitions, a discipline that has involved the German brand since the first decades of the last century. Developed together with the best riders and teams of the FIM Enduro and FIM Hard Enduro World Championships such as KTM, GAS GAS and Honda, the MCE 6 Days Extreme tyres have written pages of history in the most important enduro competitions and are chosen as original equipment by the best manufacturers for their off-road models.

Although they were designed for Enduro and Extreme Enduro World Championship riders, the MCE 6 Days Extreme tyres are also suitable for enthusiasts of the discipline who want to equip their motorcycles with high-performance tyres that make traction, versatility and resistance of the knobs their strengths.

The range of MCE 6 Days Extreme tyres includes a wide variety of specifications designed for different enduro applications and which allow riders to find the most suitable solutions for their needs. The front tyre is available in different sizes and in three versions: standard, soft and super soft. The rear is available in nine sizes divided between five different versions: standard, medium, soft, super soft and the new extra soft.

Pirelli Unveils The New Diablo Supercorsa

Pirelli unveils the new Diablo Supercorsa: sport tyres par excellence from WorldSBK.

Pirelli illustrates the fourth generation of DIABLO Supercorsa tyres in detail, announced in September and now available to the general public for purchase from January, both in the SP version, designed primarily for street use, and in the SC version, available in various compounds for track use. DIABLO Supercorsa V4 (this is the full name, where V4 stands for the fourth series) is an entirely new product compared with its predecessor, the DIABLO Supercorsa V3, in terms of tread pattern, compounds, structures, and profiles. Both in the SC racing version and in the SP race replica version, DIABLO Supercorsa is the highest embodiment of Pirelli’s sporting DNA thanks to its extremely high and sporty performance or, to sum up in one word – speed.

THE PINNACLE OF PIRELLI SPORTINESS ON THE STREET IN ITS FOURTH GENERATION

From 2002, the year the first DIABLO tyre was born, the line of products which bear this name has identified Pirelli’s motorcycle sport tyres, continuing the success story which began in the ’70s, marked by exciting names such as Mandrake, Phantom, Gordon, Demon, and Dragon. With the DIABLO family, Pirelli revolutionised global street tyre paradigms, creating a proper brand, enriched year after year by technological innovations and the experience gained in the FIM World Superbike Championship, where Pirelli has been sole tyre supplier since 2004. After introducing the DIABLO Superbike tyres in 2005, slicks exclusively for track use designed for the Superbike category, in 2007, Pirelli launched the first generation of DIABLO Supercorsa SC grooved racing tyres, followed by the SP street version in 2008. DIABLO Supercorsa SC became the absolute benchmark for the Supersport and Superstock categories, both in the world and national championships and even now it is the standard for those championships that still use treaded tyres. In the same way, over the years, DIABLO Supercorsa SP has been selected as OEM equipment on the most prestigious supersport and hyper naked bikes. The second generation of DIABLO Supercorsa, presented in 2012, was then followed by the third in 2018, and now the fourth continues the path of technological excellence begun three decades ago.

ONE SOUL, TWO PRODUCTS: SC AND SP, FROM THE TRACK TO THE STREET
When Pirelli decided to make the first DIABLO Supercorsa in 2007, they did so with a rather specific idea and goal. The idea was to make a racing tyre respecting the basic philosophy of the World Superbike Championship, namely the bond with normal production, so not a prototype tyre, but a product that can be used by both professional riders and normal motorcyclists. The goal is to take advantage of the top category in the production derived world series not only as a showcase to give the brand visibility but also as a laboratory to develop, with some of the best riders in the world and the most prestigious manufacturers, advanced technological solutions and tyres not for exclusive use by the world championship riders, but also for everyday use. And it is precisely with DIABLO Supercorsathat the motto dear to Pirelli’s heart was born, “We sell what we race, we race what we sell”, indicating how the very same tyres used by professional riders in races can be purchased by any motorcyclist. This is why, from the beginning, DIABLO Supercorsa was developed as a single project but in two forms: the SC track tyre in various compounds and its SP street version, both in standard production available for purchase on the market in order to meet not only the needs of track riders, but also sport street riding enthusiasts. Over the years, DIABLO Supercorsa SP has become the supersport tyre of choice for all high performance bike owners who want an uncompromising street riding experience, thanks to extremely high levels of grip and performance. But above all, as of today, it remains the best and most immediate example of the technological transfer from track to road of Pirelli tyres, since it shares with the ‘SC’ the tread pattern, profiles, and many materials and technologies used in terms of structure, in addition to one of the two compounds it uses (the SC3).

CONCENTRATION OF TECHNOLOGY, PERFORMANCE AND SAFETY BORN IN SUPERBIKE
DIABLO Supercorsa, in both the SC and the SP versions, is a true concentration of technology capable of providing high performance combined with the highest safety standards thanks to the ability to interact and collaborate closely with the most modern and sophisticated riding assistance systems. It is the result of twenty years of studies, development, and testing of solutions by Pirelli in the FIM World Superbike Championship. It is a tyre that was also designed with input from former world champions and developed with the support of all the manufacturers and teams that participate in the most important competition for factory derivative bikes. DIABLO Supercorsa SC V4, where the abbreviation SC stands for “Special Compound”, is the best and fastest treaded track tyre ever made by Pirelli. Thanks to the various compounds it is available in, DIABLO Supercorsa SC V4 is intended for use by both professional and semi-professional riders, as well as by those who are simply track day enthusiasts or riders just starting out in their careers who want to improve performance without making changes to the settings on their bikes. Compared with its V3 predecessor, these are the features and relative benefits for the riders that DIABLO Supercorsa SC V4 has to offer:

  • Latest generation compounds for outstanding performance and grip
  • Racing structure for better support coming out of corners
  • Racing profiles to the advantage of rideability, line holding, and stability at high speeds
  • Tread pattern with patented Flash evolution for smoother power on leans and improved consistency of performance

In the same way, DIABLO Supercorsa SP V4, where the abbreviation SP stands for “Sport Production”, is the sportiest tyre ever for street use in the DIABLO family. Compared with the SC version, DIABLO Supercorsa SP complies with all the regulatory restrictions of the vehicles it can equip – such as, for example, the speed index requirement (W) – and it is less sensitive to temperature, as well as heating up more quickly and providing more mileage due to the compounds. This tyre is intended for riders who love sport riding not only on the track but on the road as well. This undoubtedly includes owners of supersport street bikes from which the World Superbike Championship bikes are derived, but also track day enthusiasts who want a street legal tyre so they can ride to the circuit instead of having to load the bike on a trailer and one that will also let them turn laps on the track without having to swap out tyres. DIABLO Supercorsa SP V4 ensures significant benefits for riders:

  • Dual compound on both the front and the rear for maximum grip in leans and outstanding thrust coming out of turns, but also adequate mileage.
  • Latest generation structures that work in unison with the compounds for optimum performance both on the road and on the track by simply adjusting the pressure.
  • Profiles, identical to those of the SC version which ensure a simple ride and maximum reactivity.
  • Tread pattern identical to that of the SC with the new flash pattern interrupted at the centre with a slick area for smoother thrust at any lean angle and more consistent

Both versions share the tread pattern, the profiles, the compounds in part, and some technological solutions in terms of structure.

Tread pattern

  • The interrupted FLASH design improves water displacement and the area of contact surface with the ground.
  • The slick section where the pattern is interrupted has an impact on the rigidity of the tread, reducing risks of groove deformation, and ensures better thrust at any lean angle.
  • The direction of the flash pattern on the tread follows the direction of the lateral force experienced in track riding, ensuring more even and consistent performance along with reduced warm-up time.
  • The first area of the shoulder without grooves guarantees greater contact between rubber and road surface both halfway and all the way into a lean in order to ensure greater grip on turns
  • The completely slick external area of the shoulder improves thrust at extreme angles

Profiles

  • The same racing profiles, developed in the World Superbike Championship, of the DIABLO Superbike slick tyre and the other fourth generation hypersport tyres in the Pirelli range.
  • Multi-radius profiles for abrupt direction changes, whereas the slick shoulder area provides high grip and outstanding line holding on corners.
  • The profile of the front improves handling, enticing the rider to lean into corners earlier, facilitating quick direction changes. It also provides exceptional stability thanks to the extended contact area in the leaning stage.
  • The rear follows the same pattern and similar geometry to the front in order to ensure synchronised performance of the set.
  • In the DIABLO™ SUPERCORSA SP V4, the tyre bead is designed to provide maximum performance both with tyre pressure on the road and with track use pressure (2.3 Bar front / 2.1 Bar rear with hot tyres). It is precisely the possibility of decreasing tyre pressure for track sessions that sets DIABLO SUPERCORSA SP V4 clearly apart from the other tyres in the Pirelli hypersport range.

Structure

  • The SC version shares with the DIABLO™ SUPERBIKE slick both structure and material which are able to ensure top performance and greater ease of riding with the use of specific pressures for the track.
  • Compared with its V3 predecessor, the new V4 uses new materials, such as wider section structural cords made up of a high number of textile fibres braided together to give the tyre greater rigiditycombined with better shock-absorbing capabilities.
  • In the SP version, each size has its own structure, fine-tuned for optimum performance in combination with the width of the specific profile for that size, the proportions of the compound and the arrangement of the tread pattern. Additionally, the structure of the SP is optimised for street use, so also for long distances in a straight line on motorways.

Compounds

DIABLO Supercorsa SC V4 is available in three compounds for both the front and rear:

  • SC1 – Front: maximum feeling / Rear: top performance with high temperatures and not very abrasive asphalt
  • SC2 – Front: maximum stability and consistency / Rear: consistent performance and ideal for low temperatures or extremely abrasive asphalt
  • SC3 – The race-for-fun choice for extended track sessions, but not intended for professional racing use

DIABLO Supercorsa SC V4 range

DIABLO Supercorsa SP V4 is dual compound both at the front and the rear.

Front:

  • The first DIABLO Supercorsa tyre to adopt two compounds at the front.
  • Layout with a central and base compound paired with a second compound on the tyre shoulders.
  • The base compound, which covers the entire profile of the tyre and emerges coming into contact with the asphalt at the central section, is full-silica and extremely versatile, providing thermal stability and ensures consistent performance in both cold and hot temperatures.
  • The compound of the shoulders is the same one used in the SC3 racing version, in 100% carbon black formulation, and it is capable of ensuring outstanding handling and maximum grip even at full lean.

Rear:

  • Compared with the front, this has a softer central compound and a wider side, but still maintaining the same base compound of the front in support of the two compounds in contact with the asphalt.
  • The central compound is 100% carbon black and optimised to work effectively in a broad range of temperatures because it provides grip and quick heating in various conditions. Additionally, it ensures stability at high speeds and resistance.
  • The compound used on the shoulders is the same as the one used on the front, so SC3, for maximum power coming out of corners.
  • The base compound, which is beneath the two compounds that are in contact with the asphalt, has a 100% Carbon Black formulation and was designed to work in the best possible way with the other two compounds, providing thermal stability and a better feeling for the rider.

DIABLO Supercorsa SP V4

BEST-SELLER PEDIGREE: MORE THAN 3.5 MILLION TYRES SOLD

The Diablo Supercorsa is a success story not only on the technological side, but also in terms of sales. In fact, since its début in 2007,  more than 3.5 million DIABLO Supercorsa tyres have been sold all over the world, making this product one of the most successful motorcycle tyres in Pirelli history. A success which, with this fourth generation, Pirelli will continue to build on, equipping the most prestigious supersport and naked bikes that will be introduced to the market in 2023 and the years to come with DIABLO Supercorsa SP and, with DIABLO Supercorsa SC, offering riders and track enthusiasts a racing tyre that embodies the most cutting-edge technologies.

MISSION RACING AND SPORT RANGE REVAMPING ACCOMPLISHED

With DIABLO Supercorsa V4, Pirelli concluded the revamping process of the fourth generation of the DIABLO racing and sport range which began in 2021 with DIABLO ROSSO IV and continued in 2022 with DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa. Therefore, the Pirelli range is now made up of two DIABLO SUPERBIKE racing products – the competition slick par excellence, and DIABLO SUPERCORSA SC V4, the treaded tyre for the track – and of supersport and sport tyres primarily for street use, beginning with the new DIABLO Supercorsa SP V4, the most extreme of the street tyres also suitable for the track, as well as the DIABLO ROSSO IV CORSA, the most focused version of the DIABLO ROSSO IV. Each of these tyres are covered by patents developed by Pirelli in the World Superbike Championship and the difference between these five products lies substantially in the type of use, whether street or track, in performance on dry and wet asphalt, and in the mileage that each one is able to provide.

Metzeler Presents The New Karoo 4

Metzeler presents the new Karoo 4, the knobbly tyre for adventure and maxi enduro motorcycles.

The new KAROO 4 enhances the know-how of the two-wheel focused brand to reach a new level of performance in the maxi enduro segment. Available from March 2022, it will replace the current KAROO 3.

Successor of the award-winning KAROO 3, KAROO 4 represents the latest generation of the METZELER product family: a knobbly tyre intended for the equipment of adventure and maxi enduro motorcycles, designed for on/off use.

The new KAROO 4 enhances even the most cutting edge, latest medium and large displacement enduro motorcycles that travel both on asphalt and off-road, working in tune with the most advanced rider aid systems. KAROO 4 is a highly versatile product that gives, compared to its predecessor KAROO 3, a significant improvement in off-road and on-road wet performance, even when fully loaded.

Who is KAROO 4 designed for?
METZELER KAROO 4 is the ideal choice for:

  • Owners of adventure motorcycles, riders who use their motorcycles for journeys 50% on-road 50% off-road, looking for experiences without limits. They seek reliability and performance in different weather conditions, stability even at full load and mileage.
  • Motorcyclists who want to test their skills and their bike’s capabilities, they value off-road performance in a tyre.
  • Owners of ‘scrambler’ style machines, who require an aggressive knobbly look without sacrificing on-road performance, with particular reference to handling and safety in the wet.

The benefits of KAROO 4
The main benefits of KAROO 4 are:

  • Exemplary off-road traction, thanks to the patented tread design.
  • Significant on-road handling even at full load, thanks to the profile featuring METZELER MRC[1] technology that improves line holding despite the ‘knobs’.
  • Extreme abrasion, cut and tearing resistance, thanks to the carbon black based compounds and footprint area optimisation.
  • Top wet performance and integration with rider aids. The combination of the technologies featured in KAROO 4 allows riders to safely manage different weather conditions and road surfaces, including in case of emergency braking.

THE TYRE IN DETAIL
The tread pattern
KAROO 4 features a revolutionary patented tread design, which raises the tyre’s all-round performance levels on both asphalt and on different types of off-road terrain.

As for the onroad performance, METZELER engineers worked to improve in particular the overall handling and wet behaviour, developing a knobbly pattern that allows you to safely tackle certain lean angles even in wet conditions. In the off-road field, KAROO 4 increases the performance level especially on very soft surfaces, such as sand, mud and clay.

The KAROO 4 tread pattern features these main characteristics:
– Patented design DETRATEC™, composed of central spoon-shaped knobs, which are separated from the side knobs by a wavy longitudinal groove. The combination of these three elements has a dual function: at first it traps the terrain between the knobs to generate lateral thrust and secondly, it releases it thanks to self-cleaning properties.

– Multi-pitch design. The groups of knobs are repeated with an irregular cadence to mitigate the impact of the tread against the asphalt and improve rolling smoothness;

– Optimised footprint area that includes a greater number of knobs in the contact patch, compared to KAROO 3, to improve road handling and integration with electronic rider aids;

Patented DYMATEC technology, a design methodology that preserve the functional geometries of the knobs and the tyre performance over time. In details, this technology features variable groove wall angles depending on their position along the tread band to maximise tread pattern solidity and wear uniformity.

The tread compound
The front tyre of KAROO 4 is a single compound. The radial sizes feature a carbon black compound with extreme resistance to abrasion, a direct evolution of what was used for KAROO 3. For cross-ply sizes, the engineers of the METZELER brand developed a new compound with the aim of reaching a wider operating range and greater adhesion to surfaces.

The rear radial sizes are bi-compound:

The central compound is 100% carbon black, with remarkable abrasion resistance;

The shoulder compound has an 80% carbon black and 20% silica formulation, to ensure thermal stability even under stress.

The profile

KAROO 4 adopt the METZELER MRC[2] technology, which features different profiles from the central band to the shoulder area. This increases ease of handling, improves traction and stability, even under full load. In the rear sizes, with a shorter and wider contact area compared to its predecessor, the profile of the KAROO 4 helps to reduce and even out tread wear for greater mileage.

The structure

KAROO 4 features lighter construction schemes than its predecessor. In particular radial sizes, thanks to the use of the zero-degree steel belt with INTERACT variable tension technology, guarantee a gradual riding response and a solid feeling of control.

The range

KAROO 4 will be available in the following sizes starting from March 2022:

Dunlop reveals insights into RoadSmart IV technologies

The Dunlop RoadSmart IV is the brand’s most versatile sport-touring tyre yet and features a combination of Dunlop’s innovations to create a multi-talented tyre that aims to set new standards in handling, stability, wet grip and mileage.

Beyond sport-touring: A tyre without boundaries
The sport-touring sector has become incredibly diverse as motorcycle genres overlap each other. Naked roadsters, crossover designs, road-focused adventure bikes, hyper-nakeds as well as traditional sport-tourers, were all in the design remit for RoadSmart IV.

Dunlop saw this broadening of the segment as an opportunity to create an all-new RoadSmart generation. It had to fit the needs of commuters, long-distance tourers and riders using their bikes for a Sunday morning blast. The design process was shaped by Dunlop’s research. Riders wanted a tyre that could deliver a perfect balance of outstanding dry performance and exceptional wet grip, neutral and stable handling and deliver consistent performance even after several thousand kilometres. From that brief, RoadSmart IV was born.

Wide range and two distinct specifications
The Dunlop RoadSmart IV has been developed to fit 17 of the top 20 selling motorcycles in Europe. From on-road users of adventure bikes such as the BMW R1250GS, crossovers like the Yamaha Tracer, roadsters such as the Yamaha MT or Kawasaki Z ranges or larger touring bikes, Dunlop’s development team focused on creating an incredibly versatile tyre.

In the most popular sizes (120/70ZR17 front; 180/55ZR17 and 190/55ZR17 rear) Dunlop has developed two distinct versions of the RoadSmart IV. The SP variant is optimised for lighter and sportier road machines, whereas the GT variant is tuned to bring greater handling prowess to larger touring bikes.

Technologies to take sport touring to the next level

RoadSmart IV features a package of Dunlop patented technologies, including innovations such as JointLess Belt and JointLess Tread that were developed in the motorsport world, where Dunlop is the most successful tyre brand in Isle of Man TT history, a multiple championship winner in the FIM Endurance World Championship and the exclusive tyre supplier to the Moto2 and Moto3 Grand Prix World Championships.

The features include:

  • Dynamic Front Formula: An intricately balanced combination of profile design, advanced materials and construction to give light and confident handling.
  • MultiTread: Proven on the racetracks, developed for the road. The rear tyre has different compounds to give the perfect balance of durability and grip.
  • Carcass Tension Control System: Different tension zones in the tyre casing optimise handling and maximise the footprint.
  • JointLess Belt: Dunlop’s latest evolution of its race-winning JLB construction gives stability and precise feedback.
  • JointLess Tread: A more precise way of positioning the tread during manufacture boosts durability and consistency.
  • HiSilica: Cold or wet journeys are less of a worry with a more flexible compound at low temperatures.
  • Rayon Ply Casing: Using Rayon improves mileage and allows a rapid warm-up.

Just Ride philosophy
Luca Davide Andreoni, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Europe: “Our research told us that road riders wanted outstanding wet grip, good mileage and confidence-inspiring handling. The new DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa represents a fiercer version of the DIABLO ROSSO IV supersport tyre, created to satisfy the most demanding motorcyclists seeking a tyre capable of high performance, to fully utilise the potential of their bikes.

DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa was born in the year in which Pirelli celebrates its 150th anniversary and becomes an integral part of the celebrations. During 2022 a limited edition DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa pays homage to this milestone and features the Pirelli’s 150th anniversary logo on its sidewall.

DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa with Pirelli 150th anniversary logo
Formed in Milan on 28 January 1872, the company began its business with diversified rubber products, making the first tyre for bicycles in 1890. Always passionate about competition, Pirelli participated in the first motorcycle races in 1897 and today continues with the role of sole supplier to the Superbike World Championship, a collaboration that started in 2004, as well as being the most successful brand in MXGP. Today Pirelli is the only tyre company focused exclusively on the consumer world, with products and services for cars, motorcycles and bicycles.

Who is DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa designed for?
DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa is the ideal choice for:

  • Motorcyclists who love a dynamic riding style on winding roads and mountain passes, who want a tyre to match the sporty performance of their motorcycle;
  • Motorcyclists who are passionate about tuning, who look for performance upgrades and take care of the bike set-up and aesthetics. These riders seek the optimal set-up of their motorcycle according to the type of use, also through the upgrade to high-performance equipment. They also recognise the lightning-shaped tread design, here interrupted, as the iconic symbol representing DIABLO ROSSO sporty performance.

The benefits of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa:
The main benefits of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa are:

  • Higher grip in dry conditions, thanks to a slicker tread design that guarantees a larger footprint area alongside the use of innovative compounds that increase mechanical grip levels;
  • Enhanced hi-performance handling and precise feedback. The innovative technologies applied to the carcass make DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa able to adhere to the micro-roughness of the asphalt, ensuring precise feedback and a feeling of control;
  • Performance consistency over multiple riding sessions, made possible by the characteristics of the tread pattern, where the intended repetition of the grooves offers high resistance to stress, and, by the new arrangement of the compounds, ensures optimal thermal balance.

THE TYRE IN DETAILS
Tread Pattern
The tread design of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa features a calculated repetition of the central grooves and a slicker shoulder area, for a void/fill ratio 25%[1] lower than DIABLO ROSSO IV.

In the central area, the group of longitudinal grooves assures directional stability and water evacuation. Their orientation follows the wear waves and enables an even wear, while their position increase the structural stability of the tyre to give performance consistency over multiple riding sessions.

In the intermediate area, linear grooves of different lengths are positioned using a scheme that balances compound flexibility and water evacuation. DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa features a large slick area on the shoulders, able to offer high levels of grip, precision and stability at maximum lean angles.

Compounds
The front tyre is divided into three areas using two different compounds:

  • The central band has a Full Silica compound that occupies around 45% of the section width and is present in the contact area used up to 25 degrees of lean angle;
  • The side areas have a softer compound, also Full Silica, thanks to the use of innovative resins that offer excellent grip and improve the front tyre feedback.

The rear tyre also has a bi-compound scheme for excellent road performance and works in harmony with the front:

  • The central Full Silica compound allows for a quick warm-up and excellent chemical grip on different surface conditions;
  • The shoulder compound is 100% Carbon Black and derives directly from the compounds of DIABLO Supercorsa SC used in racing competitions. This compound is able to offer support at full lean and traction during acceleration managing the torque generated by the latest generation superbikes.

Profiles
Pirelli exploits all the know-how acquired in the fastest production-derived motorcycle championship. The profiles of DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa are therefore race-derived and are characterised by a multi radius design that improves the tyre’s handling.

The central area has a sharper profile to facilitate immediate lean and rapid change of direction. In the lateral areas, on the other hand, the profile curvature is less accentuated in order to increase the contact area and ensure maximum traction when cornering. Front and rear tyres follow a similar profile design, thus ensuring a perfectly balanced and neutral behaviour of the set.

Structure
With DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa Pirelli uses a racing-derived structure with zero-degree steel belt, which manages to adapt perfectly to different levels of stress without compromising comfort and work optimally with the most advanced electronic control systems. The stiff cord technology features structural cords that are more rigid and at the same time distributed with less density (-20%) compared to a standard sport tyre[2]. This scheme leaves more room for the rubber compound, which improves riding feeling and precision thanks to its damping properties, thus transmitting to the rider, a safety feeling and control of the motorcycle.

The range

The DIABLO ROSSO IV Corsa range includes the following sizes.

New sizes dedicated to adventure bikes enlarge the range of supersports tyres SPORTEC M9 RR and sport touring tyres ROADTEC 01 SE

The two-wheel focused brand strengthens the METZELER range dedicated to the on/off segment with the introduction of brand new products, to offer adventure enthusiasts a bespoke tyre for any need. The new TOURANCE Next 2, fourth generation of the TOURANCE family, and KAROO 4 tyres represent the main news by METZELER for the on/off segment, both specifically developed for the latest generation of adventure and maxi enduro bikes.

Who is TOURANCE Next 2 designed for?
TOURANCE Next 2 guarantees a new level of performance in the adventure segment and it was developed for riders riding their motorcycles both for long journeys and out-of-town excursions, alone or with a passenger, who are looking for top performance combined with riding comfort and durability.

Features and benefits of TOURANCE Next 2
The main benefits of TOURANCE Next 2 are:

  • Accurate control at any lean angle, leading to an agile and neutral behaviour of the motorcycle thanks to the radial structure with zero degrees steel belt and INTERACT technology;
  • Top response in wet and braking conditions. The innovative formulation of the compounds with liquid polymers and their arrangement, which uses METZELER HYPERBASE technology, make TOURANCE Next 2 the new reference tyre in terms of braking and wet performance, guaranteeing  braking distances 1.5m shorter than its predecessor TOURANCE Next[1];
  • Immediate and lasting performance. The evolution of the legendary TOURANCE Next has been enhanced by new compounds and the METZELER DYMATEC technology applied to the tread pattern. This involves a particular design methodology to preserve the functional geometries of the grooves and consequently the tyre performance over time;
  • Comfort and safety even when fully loaded. The combination of tread pattern, structures and adaptive compounds make the motorcycle extremely comfortable and manageable, regardless of the presence of a passenger or luggage.

THE TYRE IN DETAIL

Tread pattern

TOURANCE Next 2 features tread pattern  traits of the pi – πwhich in addition to being distinctive of the  METZELER brand, also has a specific functional reason.

The longitudinal grooves in the central part of the tread, which make up the upper part of the pi, are interrupted by other grooves in order to ensure greater stability of the compound and consequently a uniform wear. Likewise, these grooves improve lateral thrust for high-end off-road performance.

The patented DYMATEC technology has been applied to the tread pattern, which involves a design methodology specifically designed to preserve the functional geometries of the compound blocks and consequently tyre performance over time. Thanks to DYMATEC, Dynamic Mould Angle Technology, the position of the groove along the tread width, and consequently the different lean angle in which it is involved, determines the specific angle of its the walls, in order to better manage the dynamic stresses typical of on/off riding and ensure maximum wear uniformity.

Another important feature of the front tyre is the irregular repetition of the tread pattern (Multi-Pitch Knob Layout), a technology that places blocks of compound of different sizes in contact with the asphalt, to ensure smooth rolling and a high acoustic comfort level.

Tread Compound

On the front, METZELER introduces an innovative high-silica compound (85%) containing functionalized polymers (SBR) which enhance its wet grip characteristics and stability, allowing a reduction of the braking distance by more than 10%[2] and full stability under different load conditions.

As for the TOURANCE Next 2 rear sizes, the central strip replicates the same compound as the front, while the shoulder areas are full-silica and formulated for wet performance and grip while leaning. Some sizes feature the arrangement of the tread compounds according to the Cap&Base scheme, while others use the patented Hyperbase formula.

According to the Cap&Base scheme, the shoulder areas in soft compound, which ensure grip when cornering, are layered on a harder compound base that ensures consistency in performance and thermal balance.

With the Hyperbase scheme, both shoulder areas and the central compound strip are supported by a base formulated with a specific full-carbon-black compound, oriented towards dynamic and thermal stability.

TOURANCE Next 2 range

The new TOURANCE Next 2 will progressively be available in the following sizes starting from January 2022:

Even stronger for longer: Dunlop launches new RoadSmart IV

Dunlop has revealed details of its new-for-2022 RoadSmart IV, its most versatile sport-touring tyre yet.

The RoadSmart IV uses a mix of Dunlop’s innovative technologies to create a multi-talented tyre. Dunlop’s goal is to set new standards in handling, stability, wet grip and mileage across the wide spectrum of motorcycles and rider styles in the sport-touring sector.

All variants of the RoadSmart IV feature a package of Dunlop patented technologies, with the innovative compound incorporating four all-new grip resins and the JointLess Tread application for the key sizes headlining a host of technologies and features.

Just Ride philosophy
Luca Davide Andreoni, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Europe: “Our research told us that road riders wanted outstanding wet grip, good mileage and confidence-inspiring handling. By bringing together a range of technologies, we’ve created a tyre that can cater for the demands of an incredibly diverse sector of riders and machines. Dunlop has a Just Ride philosophy of providing riders with unparalleled grip and protection, allowing them to have the confidence to focus on the joy of riding. By applying this mindset, we’ve created a new level of tyre in RoadSmart IV. It is a sport-touring tyre that goes well beyond the sport-touring segment.”

The top tier of a vast range
The Dunlop RoadSmart IV will sit above the test-winning RoadSmart III in Dunlop’s range. Pirelli Present the first 10 and 12 inch NHS Range Plus a new Wet Solution

The new sizes of DIABLO Superbike and DIABLO Rain in 10 inch have been selected as the exclusive equipment of the FIM MiniGP World Series.

Pirelli announces numerous innovations in the racing range, enriching it with new products and expanding the choice of sizes and compounds. Pirelli has always been at the forefront of research and technological development in the racing environment thanks to decades of commitment in the FIM Superbike World Championship.

In addition to the new products for motorcycles with seventeen-inch rims, Pirelli presents its first NHS competition range dedicated to small motorcycles with ten and twelve-inch wheels, including MiniGP, pitbike, minimotard and scooters. The new range includes both the DIABLO Superbike slick solutions and the DIABLO Rain grooved solutions to be used in wet conditions.

Thanks to the partnership with FIM, Dorna Sports S.L. and Ohvale, Pirelli is the Sole Supplier of tyres for the FIM MiniGP World Series, a project created to unify national, regional and continental MiniGP competitions around the world, with the aim of creating a launch platform for young riders ready to improve their skills. Starting from the FIM MiniGP World Series Final of the 2021 season, to be held this November in Valencia, the young riders will compete on Ohvale GP-0 160 machines equipped exclusively with DIABLO Superbike tyres in SC1 compound in the sizes 100 / 80-10 front and 120 / 80-10 rear.

For some time now, Pirelli has been involved in worldwide activities that support the growth of young riders, realizing for many fresh talents the opportunity to demonstrate their skills on the international racing scene thanks to the assignment of wildcards for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. Another example of this commitment is the technical sponsorship and tyre supply to the Yamaha R3 bLU cRU European Cup, the single-brand championship conceived to give riders around the world from twelve years of age the chance to race in a professional setting with a turnkey package.

Here is the summary of the main Pirelli Racing news for 2022:

DIABLO SUPERBIKE

  • New sizes in soft compound SC1, specifically developed for racing and training activities of MiniGP, pitbikes, minimotards and scooters equipped with ten and twelve inch rims:
  • 100/80 – 10 NHS TL   FRONT   SC1
  • 120/80 – 10 NHS TL   REAR      SC1
  • 100/90 – 12 NHS TL   FRONT   SC1
  • 120/80 – 12 NHS TL   REAR      SC1

DIABLO WET

  • New rear size 200/60 R 17, for both Superbike and Supersport classes, that substitutes the previous 190/60 R 17 and that aligns with the DIABLO Rain sizes. This evolution is intended to minimise the changes necessary to the set-up of the bike in the event of a sudden tyre change between slick, intermediate or wet solutions.

DIABLO RAIN

  • New solutions, specifically developed for racing and training activities of MiniGP, pitbikes, minimotards and scooters equipped with ten and twelve inch rims:
  • 100/80 – 10 NHS TL   FRONT   SCR1
  • 120/80 – 10 NHS TL   REAR      SCR1
  • 100/90 – 12 NHS TL   FRONT   SCR1
  • 120/80 – 12 NHS TL   REAR      SCR1
  • Rear size 200/60 R 17, that substitutes the 190/60 R 17 size in the Supersport class;
  • SCR1 range applied to the whole range, improved in versatility to give riders high performance in a wide range of operating conditions.

DIABLO SUPERBIKE

The DIABLO Superbike tyres are the pinnacle of the DIABLO range and are NHS slick tyres (“Not for Highway Service”), in other words intended exclusively for track use and dedicated to professional and amateur riders, as well as track day riders seeking to get the most from their circuit riding. Available in various compounds, they are capable of tackling the different types of asphalt and weather conditions that can be found on circuits all over the world. The DIABLO Superbiketyres are the ultimate in Pirelli’s technological expression applied to the world of street-legal race bikes. Their history and development are closely connected to  those of the FIM World Superbike Championship where they are now used in all classes, from Supersport 300 to Superbike, as is the case in the national championships, both those where Pirelli is the sole supplier and the ones with open tyre manufacturer competition.

DIABLO Superbike 10” and 12”

The most important news regarding the Pirelli product family dedicated to racing applications is the arrival of the DIABLO Superbike sizes in 10 and 12 inches. The new sizes of DIABLO Superbike takes the decades-long experience gained by Pirelli in the racing field to the world of small-wheeled motorcycles. DIABLO Superbike was developed as an extremely versatile product suitable to riders of any level, from amateurs to professionals, that uses their ‘small motorcycle’ for racing activities or training; the performance offered by this product are the benchmark within this category and reflects the commitment that Pirelli dedicates to the development of its racing range.

Thanks to the soft SC1 compoundused across the range, DIABLO Superbike is able to offer versatility in terms of operating conditions, such as temperature and asphalt, and type of application, from training sessions to club and professional racing.

The cross-ply structure of DIABLO Superbike 10 and 12 inch range has been specifically developed by Pirelli engineers to suit the characteristics of the target vehicles that the product is intended for, to facilitate quick change in direction and maintain reference performance in a wide range of operating conditions.

The profile has also been developed to obtain the best performance from the 10 and 12 inch motorcycles in racing conditions. Compared to the grooved DIABLO ROSSO Scooter SC, the front and rear profiles of DIABLO Superbike tyres have a double-radius profile that guarantees easy handling and a feeling of control while cornering, thanks to the greater contact area between the tyre and the asphalt.

DIABLO Superbike 17”
During the 2021 season, Pirelli has perfected and updated the new version of the DIABLO SUPERBIKE in SCX compound, a rear super soft tyre in between the qualifying compound and the renowned SC0 solution. Now available in the 200/65 R 17 tyres for the Superbike class and 190/60 R 17 for the Supersport class, this solution has been extremely appreciated by the riders of the FIM World Superbike Championship that have unanimously selected it for several races during the season.

In 2022 Pirelli also introduce the new rear size 140/70 R 17 in medium compound SC2, which next to the current SC1 solution, represents the new tyre range dedicated to riders of the Supersport 300 class. This compound is the ideal choice in case of particularly low temperatures or an abrasive tarmac, or for riders who are looking for a higher mileage.

Thanks to different rear options now available, from 2022 riders and teams in the Supersport 300 categories will be able to make a choice on the rear tyre compound to be used in the race or during training, in order to better adapt to different operating conditions.

DIABLO WET
DIABLO Wet represents the intermediate solution between slick and DIABLO Rain tyres, intended for use in case of intermediate weather conditions, such as drying asphalt/ a dry line. DIABLO Wet has a tread pattern with a lower number of grooves compared to DIABLO Rain and a compound with a high silica content that allows for chemical grip even on wet asphalt.

The 2022 range includes the arrival of the new rear size 200/60 R 17, intended for the Superbike class as well as the Supersport class, where it replaces the previous size 190/60 R 17. The passage of DIABLO Wet to a larger size represents an excellent advantage for teams and riders that, in the event of uncertain or variable weather conditions before a race, could swap between DIABLO Wet and DIABLO Rain tyres without having to change the bike set up.

DIABLO RAIN

In case of rain conditions, Pirelli has worked to improve the performance of the 200/60 ZR 17 rear tyre, the reference size for the Superbike class and from 2022 also for the Supersport class, replacing the previous 190/60 R 17 size.

DIABLO RAIN has a design with a different orientation between the grooves in the central area, which allow for a more homogeneous wear and greater stability of the tread, and those on the shoulder, which improve water evacuation and, consequently, the grip during full lean and corner exit.

All the sizes of the new DIABLO Rain range are SCR1, a compound with a high silica content that has been constantly improved over the years thanks to the work carried out by Pirelli on the circuits of international and national championships around the world. The development of this compound has been particularly oriented to increase its performance and versatility, so that riders can obtain with a single solution the best performance possible, regardless of the different operating conditions that may be encountered during the racing season.

The DIABLO Rain range also includes the new sizes dedicated to competitions on scooters, pitbikes, minimotards and MiniGPs with ten and twelve inch wheels.

Dunlop develops GT503 tyre for the new Harley-Davidson Sportster S

The new Harley-Davidson Sportster S is one of the most anticipated new motorcycle launches of 2021. It’s one of the most powerful models in the Harley-Davidson range and Dunlop was tasked with developing an advanced new tyre designed specifically for its needs. The Dunlop GT503 features a new tyre construction and compound to provide great performance for riders, while the aggressive look of the tread pattern matches the dynamic appearance of the Sportster S.

The new GT503 provides its riders with many advanced features. The radial construction features a Steel Jointless Belt (JLB) technology, which delivers more responsive and consistent handling while also providing a compliant ride. The tread pattern on GT503 has been developed to maximise the contact patch and provide Sportster S riders with high levels of dry grip, whereas the long tread grooves enhance riding confidence on wet surfaces. With the newly developed compound, GT503 provides not only excellent grip but also offers high mileage potential.

The tyre features the Harley-Davidson logo on the sidewall emphasising the bespoke design and the strong partnership between the two brands. Luca Davide Andreoni, Dunlop Marketing Manager Europe, said: “We are proud that Harley-Davidson has chosen Dunlop for the Sportster S. It is exactly 40 years since Dunlop was asked to develop specific tyres for the original Sportster. Since then, Dunlop has supplied over 10 million original equipment tyres to Harley-Davidson, highlighting the close partnership. With the Dunlop GT503 Dunlop continues that relationship in developing innovative tyres to meet the demanding requirements of the manufacturer and their customers.”

GT503 will be available in front: 160/70R17 and rear: 180/70R16 sizes. The wide front tyre size provides the custom bike look but has been tuned by Dunlop’s experts to deliver the light handling expected of sports bikes.

Pirelli introduce ‘SCX’ Slick Tyre for 14th Year of BSB Racing

Pirelli introduce ‘SCX’ Slick (Super Soft) tyre for 14th year of Bennetts British Superbike Championship Sole Tyre Supply.

Pirelli enter their fourteenth season as Sole Tyre Supplier to the Bennetts British Superbike (BSB) Championship with the addition of the DIABLO™ Superbike Slick SCX (Super Soft) tyre to rider’s available options

Introduced into the WSBK paddock in 2019, the BSB series debut of the SCX tyre follows last season’s change to Pirelli’s larger size tyres.

Each BSB event will be now a triple header with a ‘Sprint’ race on Saturday after qualifying, ahead of two standard length Superbike races on Sunday. The new SCX tyre is likely to feature heavily during Saturday qualifying and the shorter ‘Sprint’ outing providing ultimate performance over the shortened distance races.

SCX also comes into its own when track temperatures are higher and on smoother asphalt, allowing teams to develop a chassis setting aimed at exploiting the increased grip levels provided by the SCX option.

Superbike riders will have the choice of the new SCX tyre and the almost universally used (in BSB2020) SC0 Soft rear tyre. After inclement weather at the early BSB tests, riders were able to evaluate the qualities of the new tyre at the most recent Donington test which was held in warm temperatures. Rear tyre sizes as introduced last year are 200/65R17, with a larger diameter for increased grip as riders exit a corner.

At the ‘front end’, riders can choose from the SC1 and SC2 (harder) option tyres with the SC2 giving a more stable feeling as a rider transitions into a corner (drops in). The front tyres were also increased in size last season to give a wider contact patch from a 120 to 125 section (now 125/70 17).

In the event of rain, there are two RAIN tyres in a soft or harder compound and the Diablo WET (Intermediate) tyre, which was used to good effect by Jonathan Rea at the recently held Aragon round of the World Superbikes Championship.

The Pirelli presence in the paddock has also changed as new logistics partner Protyre Motorsport will be bringing 4,000 tyres to each of the eleven events to service the Superbike, Supersport, Superstock, Junior Superstock, Junior Supersport and Ducati Tri-Options classes.

Jason Griffiths Pirelli UK Racing Manager explained, “Pirelli are ready for what will certainly be a very busy season with a compact race calendar. The introduction to the series of the SCX rear tyre will provide added interest in terms of tyre strategy. The high track temperatures at the recent Donington Park test allowed the teams and riders to evaluate the new tyre over race distance and it is clear that given suitable track temperatures and less aggressive asphalt the SCX option can be used for the full length races, as we have seen in World Superbikes. BSB continues to provide an incredibly competitive grid and we’re ready for the racing to begin.”

2021 (SUPERBIKE CLASS) TYRE OPTIONS

FRONT:

  • 125/70 R17 SC1 (SOFTER):

This is the softest solution available for the front. This compound was developed to provide high grip, performance and riding precision with a versatility of use.

  • 125/70 R17 SC2 (HARDER)

This new medium solution is sturdier and quicker in direction changes, gives more support, good grip, maximum lean angle and better absorption of any bumps on the track.

REAR:

  • 200/65 R17 SCX (SUPER SOFT)

This solution, which uses an extremely soft compound, designed to sit between the performance of a qualifying compound and that of a soft racing tyre.

  • 200/65 R17 SC0 (SOFT)

This option was the tyre of choice for the 2020 BSB series. It offers consistency for long races and also delivers maximum performance across a wide operating temperature range.

RAIN TYRES

  • DIABLO™ RAIN

There are two RAIN rear tyres which were first utilised in BSB in 2019 (now in size 200/60) with different groove angles in the grip area, which allow a more consistent wear across the tyre and greater tread stability. Revised shoulder grooves improve water dispersion and improve grip when leaning and traction coming out of corners. Two compounds are available:

  • SCR1: compound intended for use in cooler conditions (asphalt temperatures lower than 15°C) or particularly smooth asphalt. This tyre gives the greater grip level.
  • SCR2: compound dedicated to higher track temperatures (asphalt temperatures higher than 15°C) or particularly aggressive asphalt. This should be the most used solution if the track is starting to dry out.
  • DIABLO™ WET

As previously an ‘intermediate’ tyre is available for the tricky damp / drying track which features less grooves than the ‘full’ RAIN tyre. Developed in 190/60 R17 sizing for the rear.

TYRE ALLOCATIONS 2021
A regular total dry tyre usage limit applies for the race weekend (free practice, qualifying practice, warm up and races). 8 Rear (dry) tyres and 8 Front (dry) tyres. Riders graduating to Qualifying 2, (the top six) from Qualifying 1 are authorised to use one extra set of tyres (1 dry front and 1 dry rear). In Qualifying 1 and Qualifying 2 all riders may use a maximum of one set of tyres (1 front and 1 rear) in each session. This will be indicated by a “Q” sticker on each tyre used.

SUPPORT CLASSES: DIABLO™ SUPERCORSA SC V3
The all new (for 2019), third generation, PIRELLI DIABLO™ Supercorsa SC V3 has been completely redesigned in terms of structure, profiles, tread pattern and compounds to give a more consistent performance.

These tyres are available for the following classes: Quattro British Supersport 600 & 300, Pirelli National Superstock 1000 & 600 plus the Ducati TriOptions Cup.

The DIABLO™ Supercorsa range of road legal tyres are the ultimate in Pirelli’s customer range of treaded tyres for racing and track day use. The ‘SP’ version of these tyres are used by sports bike owners the world over for everyday road and trackday usage.

4th Place Championship Position Proves New Maxxis Tyre

The Maxxis MaxxCross MX-ST+ is the latest motocross tyre from Maxxis, and has proven its ability to withstand a wider variety of terrain than its predecessor, the MX-ST, by achieving a series of impressive results this weekend [12 – 13 June] at the Orlyonok motocross track for the MXGP of Russia.

The brand-new MaxxCross MX-ST+, the next generation of its predecessor, the MaxxCross MX-ST, has proven itself at the MXGP of Russia.

Fresh from a satisfying seasonal debut in the Internazionali d’Italia, Alessandro Lupino of Marchetti KTM raced two fantastic heats at the hard-pack and varied Orlyonok track of the MXGP of Russia, bringing his MaxxCross MX-ST+ clad KTM home in 4th position in the World Championship standings, preceded only by factory teams.

In addition, Jeremy Van Horebeek on his brand-new factory Beta motocross bike, achieved a top-10 World Championship standing by the end of the weekend, closing the Russian GP in 9th place. Meanwhile, in the MX2 championship, Simon Laengenfelde of the DIGA Procross GASGAS Factory MX2 Racing team secured another top-10 finish in the MX2 World Championship, resulting in a weekend of three top-10 results for Maxxis riders in the opening round of MXGP.

Following continuous tweaks and close monitoring across a variety of tracks, Maxxis Technical Centre Europe has developed a dual-compound version of the Maxxis MaxxCross MX-ST which offers improved turning, jumping, acceleration, traction, braking straight-line stability performance and, most notably, improved mileage compared to both the original MaxxCross MX-ST and the leading competitor in the motocross market.

The MaxxCross MX-ST+ remains an extremely lightweight tyre for maximum speed with immediate traction off-the-gate. The front tyre continues to be incredibly precise for a nimble handling and riding experience, while the powerful, dual-compound rear tyre provides incredible traction across a wide range of track types.

Brand-new to the UK, the MXGP news of the weekend is a fantastic demonstration of the new motocross tyre’s abilities on gruelling, varied hard pack tracks, making it suitable for professional and grassroots motocross riders alike, who want a race-specification tyre to offer consistent performance throughout race day or training day.

Available now in 100/90-19, 110/90-19 and 80/100-21, the MaxxCross MX-ST+ is available to order from motocross shops nationwide, or from bickers-online.co.uk.
