Peter Hickman forges closer partnership with Dunlop

Five-time Isle of Man TT winner Peter Hickman has announced a deeper relationship with Dunlop Motorcycle Europe  that will include an Official Brand Ambassador role, adding to his duties as a Dunlop test tyre rider.

The 34-year old Englishman chose Dunlop tyres to help him achieve success at the Isle of Man TT and other challenging road races such as the Macau and Ulster Grand Prix. He won his first TT in 2018, setting an all time lap record of 135.452 mph (217.989 km/h) on the final lap on his BMW S 1000 RR.

The following year, he stamped his name in the Ulster Grand Prix record books, establishing the Northern Ireland road circuit as even faster than the Manx lap with a stunning 136.415 mph (219.539 km/h) average, with peak speeds well over 200 mph (322 km/h).

The pandemic has resulted in the cancellation of the key road races in both 2020 and 2021, but Hickman has been able to stay sharp in his role as official Dunlop tyre tester. Testing Dunlop’s latest development tyres for road and track at venues such as the brand’s proving grounds in Mireval, France, means that Hickman has been able to have a direct input into the future generations of Dunlop hypersport tyres.

The new partnership involves Hickman becoming an Official Dunlop Brand Ambassador, giving Dunlop customers an opportunity to meet him at post-lockdown events. Dunlop Motorcycle Europe’s social media channels will also feature thrilling and exclusive content from the record-breaking racer. Fans will be able to see his content by following @DunlopMoto on Facebook and Instagram.

Hickman has a family history with Dunlop, explaining: “My dad used to race in the 1970s and was also a Dunlop test rider. I grew up around the Dunlop team and it’s appropriate that my best results have been achieved on their tyres. In road racing, the speed, precision and variable conditions mean I need to put faith in products you can trust at the limit. That’s why I’m proud to work with Dunlop.”

Luca Davide Andreoni, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Motorcycle Europe, said: “Peter has enjoyed success on a range of different bike models and that vast experience is valuable to Dunlop when developing tyres for racing, track day and for road-going hypersport bikes. We have exciting plans to develop engaging social media content together. This will bring racing fans even closer to the action.”

Dunlop off-road tyres gain new ratings to increase versatility

Two of Dunlop’s highly durable off-road tyres have been updated with new designations that are set to provide substantial benefits to leisure riders and hardcore enduro enthusiasts alike.

The Dunlop D952, a tyre designed for recreational off-road use, has received ECE R75 certification. This means it can be used legally on the road as well as on tracks, saving riders the expense and resources associated with transporting specialist equipment.

The new categorisation has been granted to four of the six sizes within the D952 range and is available from April 2021.

The road-legal specifications of this hardy tyre are 110/90-18 61M, 110/90-19 62M, 120/90-18 65M and 80/100-21 51M.

Designed to work across a wide variety of terrain, the D952 is based on a high-durability construction that promotes long wear and supreme traction. Its pattern is derived from the popular D752, while the addition of road legality further highlights its status as a perfect tyre for off-road leisure use.

Another significant development within Dunlop’s extensive off-road range is the application of M+S (mud and snow) marking to all three sizes of the D908 RR enduro tyre.

This means that Dunlop’s road-legal dual-sport/desert pattern can now be fitted to bikes with a higher top speed than the tyre’s speed rating, opening it up to an even wider range of machinery.

Recent off-road enduro bikes such as the Honda CRF 1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports, Yamaha Tenere 700 and several KTM models ranging from the 250 EXC all the way up to the 1290 Super Adventure R can be equipped with Dunlop’s D908 RR in its updated M+S form.

The Husqvarna 701 Enduro, BMW G450X and SWM RS650R are also covered, along with the PR7 Adventure 650 from AJP and the EC 450 Raid from GasGas.

The exceptional durability of D908 RR, stemming from its rally-raid competition roots, provides unbeatable performance on the toughest riding surfaces including sand, rocks and hard ground.

Dmitri Talboom, Product Manager Dunlop Motorcycle EMEA: “Off-road is a key arm of Dunlop’s motorcycle division and we are proud to continue developing our products in this field to meet the needs of the modern rider. The ECE R75 certification for D952 is a game-changer for enthusiasts who can now ride to their favourite tracks and get going right away without changing tyres. Furthermore, the M+S marking for D908 RR is important for introducing a new range of machinery to this pattern’s rally-raid attributes.”

Dunlop extends Mutant range to fit more than 140 further bike models

Dunlop has expanded its Mutant range with the introduction of two new rear sizes, enabling more than 140 models to use the world’s first crossover tyre and its range of smart technologies.

Mutant has been made available in the 150/60ZR17 and 160/60ZR17 sizes. Both cover a comprehensive range of bikes covering the naked, roadster and crossover sectors.

The large group, which includes sportier models as well as entry-level machines, can now be equipped with Dunlop’s innovative Mutant crossover pattern which provides exceptional wet grip and safety in all riding conditions throughout the year.

The narrower rear tyre size – 150/60ZR17 – can fit to an impressive set of more than 60 bike models including the KTM RC390 and Kawasaki Z400. Aprilia, BMW, Honda and SWM are also among the manufacturers with machines that suit this particular Mutant specification, opening up Mutant’s all-weather performance to a range of entry-level sports bikes.

The wider 160/60ZR17 offering fits to more than 70 bikes containing a higher engine capacity such as the Honda CBR 500R, Triumph Bonneville Speed Twin and 2020’s Kawasaki Ninja 650 and Z650, as well as the Versys 650. Husqvarna’s Vitpilen and Svartpilen 701s and the 2019-spec KTM 690 SMCR are also freshly Mutant-compatible.

Aprilia, Benelli, CF Moto, Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Voge and 20 other OEM’s all produce bikes that can be equipped with both new sizes.

The Mutant range brings together several Dunlop technologies to create a tyre that’s as versatile as the bikes it’s designed for.

MultiTread (MT) technology fortifies side grip when cornering, while the front section contours designed using the Dynamic Front Formula (DFF) enhance stability and rider feedback. Both technologies are also found in Dunlop’s high-performance road products, highlighting the sports handling attributes of the Mutant.

Furthermore, Rayon Ply Casing in the tyre compound gives a short warm-up time and strengthened durability. Mutant is suited to wet and cold conditions thanks to the use of High Surface Area (HSA) silica and 4 Season technology.

These advanced features combine to form a crossover tyre that thrives in all settings, all year round.

Dmitri Talboom, Product Manager, Dunlop Motorcycle EMEA: “Introducing two new rear tyre sizes for the pioneering Mutant crossover is an important step for Dunlop. Our engineers have dedicated many of our spearhead technologies to this product so that riders can safely conquer all conditions and enjoy exceptional durability. We are pleased to have extended Mutant’s reach to more than 130 further bike models from 26 manufacturers, giving even more riders the option to enjoy its supreme crossover versatility wherever they ride.”

Dunlop SportSmart TT chosen for BMW M 1000 RR

BMW Motorrad has unveiled the new M 1000 RR, the first M motorcycle from the manufacturer. It is based on the S 1000 RR and designed for riders who demand extreme, pure race-bred performance. BMW has chosen the Dunlop SportSmart TT for the road-legal version of the limited edition M 1000 RR. In a similar vein to the bike, the SportSmart TT offers race-derived technology in a tyre that’s equally at home on the street or the circuit.

Compared to the standard superbike, the M 1000 RR has additional competition-proven parts such as carbon fibre winglets and wheels. It is tuned to deliver 212 HP at a searing 14,500 RPM.

A race-inspired bike requires a race-inspired tyre. The SportSmart TT features the same NTEC RT technology as Dunlop’s Isle of Man TT winning tyres. This allows the rear pressure to be lowered for track use, enlarging the contact patch and maximising grip. A unique feature of the SportSmart TT is the Speed Vent Tread which has a tread groove pattern that opens and closes when the tyre turns. This creates a vent-like effect to improve heat dissipation.

Miguel Morais, Original Equipment Manager, Dunlop Moto Europe said: “We are proud that BMW has awarded Dunlop with an exclusive supply agreement for the first ever ‘M’ motorcycle. Every M 1000 RR will be fitted with SportSmart TT, which underlines and endorses the high performance and technology of the tyre.”

Winning in racing and in magazine tests

Dunlop has a proud history of success on track with the racing version of the S 1000 RR. The BMW Motorrad Team is within touching point of the lead of the FIM Endurance World Championship that concludes at Estoril this weekend. In the French Superbike Championship, Kenny Foray dominated the Ledenon races earlier this month on his Dunlop-shod BMW. On the roads, Peter Hickman has relied on the BMW and Dunlop combination to win the Isle of Man TT, the Macau Grand Prix and set the road racing lap record at the Ulster Grand Prix.

Magazine testers also rate the SportSmart TT as a winner. The UK Fast Bikes team rated the SportSmart TT as best superbike tyres in a ‘blind’ track test1 and it was awarded the accolade of ‘Best handling tyre’ by the German magazine ‘PS’ 2.

Luca Davide Andreoni, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Moto Europe, added: “Dunlop’s hypersport range features a tyre for every kind of superbike rider. From the road-orientated SportSmart Mk3 through to the race winning GP Racer and GP Pro tyres, Dunlop has the most comprehensive hypersport range. The SportSmart TT straddles both road and track, offering fantastic rider feedback and grip in both arenas. That’s why it is the perfect tyre for such highly-developed sport bikes such as the BMW M 1000 RR.”

The Championship-Winning Sand Tyre From Maxxis, Now Available

The new, championship-winning sand motocross tyre from Maxxis, the MaxxCross MX-SM, is now available to buy in the UK.

The MaxxCross MX-SM is a sand and mud tyre designed to offer the performance expected by professionals, available to the everyday rider.

Introduced to the FIM International Motocross Championship (MXGP) in 2019, the MX-SM performed admirably on the sand tracks which make up around 30% of the race calendar. Used in combination with the MaxxCross MX-ST on mid-soft tracks, this winning combination came away with three Championship titles.

“When we get to a sand track, I really notice how the MX-SM has been designed for sandy terrain, and I can trust both tyres to deliver the results they were designed for.” – Alberto Forato, Maddii Racing, MX2 Championship 2020 (2019 3rd Place European 250cc Motocross Championship).

Mattia Guadagnini used the same combination throughout the 2019 season to achieve Junior World Motocross 125cc Champion and European 125cc Motocross Champion, proving the high-performance capabilities of this tyre.

Designed to excel in sand and mud conditions, the new sand tyre provides the ultimate traction in sand or mud, propelling the rider forward throughout the duration of a sand track or beach race.

The shoulder blocks are quite a thing to behold, standing extremely proud of the base of the tyre. These blocks provide insane confidence in sandy corners where riders would otherwise have to stay off the throttle until they exited the corner. Thanks to this extreme cornering traction, riders who choose the MaxxCross MX-SM find speed in corners while their competitors struggle.

The compound is made of an aquaphobic, hardened rubber for self-cleaning properties and high durability for everyday riders.

Used on sand tracks in the 2019 and 2020 MXGP season, the MaxxCross MX-SM is proven to perform to the highest standard, and will continue to provide extraordinary performance to professional racers and hobby riders alike.

Interested in the MaxxCross MX-SM? Ask your local tyre shop to order some in for you.

Metzeler Renews Its Offering For The Scooter Segment With The New Roadtec™ Scooter

METZELER ROADTEC™ SCOOTER is available in a wide range of sizes, satisfying the needs of any scooter rider. Its main features include grip and versatility in every season, comfort and safety on low friction surfaces

ROADTEC™ Scooter is the new tyre developed by METZELER and intended for all types of scooters, with wheels ranging from 10 to 16 inches. ROADTEC™ Scooter boasts extreme adaptability and versatility, capable of dealing with the most diverse weather conditions and types of asphalt in urban and suburban areas.

The ROADTEC™ Scooter development project naturally takes inspiration from the award-winning ROADTEC™ 01 sport touring tyre, whose strengths, such as exceptional wet performance and high mileage, have been optimised for use on scooters.

The product range includes forty-eight sizes, which will progressively replace the current METZELER portfolio consisting of FEELFREE™, FEELFREE™ WINTEC and ME 7 TEEN™, offering instead a single product with better performance and significantly simplifying the choice for consumers. In particular, ROADTEC™ Scooter, compared to the products it will replace, guarantees a greater level of grip on both wet and low friction surfaces, the ability to operate in a wider range of temperature and superior handling.

The tread pattern of this new tyre directly derives from that of METZELER ROADTEC™ 01. The evolution of the award-winning product dedicated to the world of scooters has allowed the use of a system partially based on sipes, derived from the experience gained with FEELFREE™ WINTEC. In addition to the grip on low friction surfaces, guaranteed by the recognisable tread pattern of ROADTEC 01™, the sipes contribute to the conformability of the footprint, with the main benefits being in terms of warm-up and comfort.

Compared to its predecessors, ROADTEC™ Scooter is characterised by more rounded profiles and by a lighter and more flexible structure, increasing its footprint area and improving handling. Finally, the compounds of ROADTEC™ Scooter have a high percentage of silica for improved wet performance, and a wider range of operating temperatures.

Features and benefits of ROADTEC™ Scooter

The main benefits are:

  • Grip on different types of asphalt. Thanks to the high silica content in the compound that works in conjunction with the innovative tread design made up of grooves and sipes, ensuring high levels of mechanical and chemical grip in all conditions.
  • Versatility of use in any season. ROADTEC™ Scooter is the ideal solution for urban and extra-urban mobility, regardless of weather conditions or temperatures. The high silica content of the tread compound allows extreme versatility and flexibility of use in a wider range of temperatures and asphalt conditions.
  • Handling and superior comfort, thanks to the innovative rounded profiles, and a lighter and more flexible carcass, ROADTEC™ Scooter guarantees a high conformability of the footprint and comfort even on uneven surfaces for high riding pleasure.
  • Safety on wet surfaces and low friction surfaces. The recognisable tread pattern of the award-winning ROADTEC™ 01 is combined with the innovative use of sipes, which contributes to optimising its benefits for the scooter sector. The ROADTEC™ Scooter tread design allows efficient water evacuation in wet conditions and guarantees a high level of grip, even on low friction surfaces such as worn and imperfect urban surfaces and cobblestones.

THE TYRE IN DETAILS

The tread pattern

The tread pattern of ROADTEC™ Scooter naturally takes inspiration from the award-winning ROADTEC™ 01 tyre, bringing METZELER’s profound knowledge within the sport touring segment to the world of scooters.

The front measures ROADTEC™ Scooter have a high number of transversal grooves that mechanically adhere to the asphalt and, compared to the predecessor FEELFREE™, significantly increasing the ability to evacuate water in wet conditions. The addition of sipes to the tread pattern, derived from the experience gained with FEELFREE™ WINTEC, helps the compound to warm up, guaranteeing braking stability and an excellent level of grip from the very first corner. Finally, the repetition of the grooves is optimised to maximise acoustic comfort and interact better with ABS systems.

The ROADTEC™ Scooter rear tyre combines grooves of different sizes and depths: the long and deep directional grooves inherited from ROADTEC™ 01 are crossed here by sipes that run in the opposite direction. The former ensures an excellent level of water dispersion and better control in critical driving conditions such as panic braking or acceleration when cornering. At the same time, the specific orientation of these grooves contributes to ensuring high mileage by allowing consistent wear. The sipes instead follow an opposite orientation and have the function of maximising the evacuation of water and the level of mechanical grip.

The compound

ROADTEC™ Scooter features a compound with a high silica content that, together with the tread design, makes it able to guarantee a high level of chemical and mechanical grip. Special adhesive resins increase the capacity to adhere with the asphalt and the perceived safety level.

In addition, the patented mixing process maximises the consistency of the components dispersed in the polymer matrix, allowing the tyre to consistently offer high levels of performance.

The structure

The structure of ROADTEC™ Scooter has a more flexible carcass than that of FEELFREE™ and has been designed to allow a more conformable footprint. As a result, the level of mechanical grip increases significantly and the absorption of road irregularities such as bumps, potholes or rough asphalts drastically improves, boosting rider comfort.

The profile

The profiles of ROADTEC™ Scooter are more rounded than those of FEELFREE ™ with the consequent advantage of having a shorter and wider contact patch than that of the predecessor. The footprint of ROADTEC™ Scooter has been specifically designed to contain the compound overheating within the operating range, thus reducing the wear process, as well as to include a greater number of grooves for greater safety in the wet.

The size range

The initial ROADTEC™ Scooter range includes forty-eight sizes which will gradually replace the current METZELER FEELFREE™, FEELFREE™ WINTEC and ME 7 TEEN™ products on the market. This choice entails a significant simplification both of the range management by the retailer and of the understanding and choice of the product by the end consumer.

Metzeler Presents The New Racetec™ TD Slick

RACETEC™ TD SLICK is dedicated to track day fans and club racers. It combines the advantages of a slick tyre that does not require tyre warmers or elaborate bike settings with constant top performance and versatility to different riding styles.

RACETEC™ TD SLICK becomes part of the METZELER slick racing tyre range and is dedicated to motorcyclists and club racers for both competitive and training activities.

RACETEC™ TD Slick is a track tyre that is easy and immediate to use, which can be used without tyre warmers and does not require any particular set-up of the motorcycle in order to perform at its best. RACETEC™ TD Slick main features includes high performance, the consistency of performance over multiple sessions, the versatility on different asphalt types and operating temperatures, high abrasion resistance and the possibility of reversing the rear tyre between sessions (if the circuit wears a tyre more on one side).

RACETEC ™ TD Slick has been designed for motorcyclists who want the advantage of a slick product but without the need for additional racing equipment (stands / electric blankets / power generators, etc.) or the refined set-up of motorcycle and suspension that a slick racing tyre usually requires.

RACETEC™ TD Slick is therefore intended for all motorcyclists who look for slick performance, for expert riders who need a plug & play product for long practice sessions, for club racers who require an excellent value for money tyre that allows them to focus on improving lap times throughout the race weekend.

RACETEC™ TD Slick is part of the METZELER slick racing portfolio with a range that includes one front and four rear sizes which are most commonly found as original equipment on supersport bikes, to further testify the plug & play characteristics of the product.

The METZELER slick product family includes also the renowned RACETEC™ RR Slick, the tyre for top competition available in different compounds according to the type of use. The K0 and K1 compounds are dedicated to the professional use in the Superbike class of road racing activities, such as the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, and to the same classes of the various national championships. The K2 compound is the most versatile within the RACETEC™ RR Slick range and is developed for those competitions at professional and amateur level where it is necessary to combine constant peak performance over several sessions, resulting in the best solution on particularly demanding circuits and in endurance sessions.

Features and benefits of RACETEC™ TD SLICK

The main benefits are:

  • A quick warm up, which allows motorcyclists to free themselves from the use of tyre warmers thanks to the polymers characterized by a lower glass transition temperature. RACETEC™ TD SLICK is suitable for use from low operating temperatures, with a consequent resistance to cold tearing
  • Reusable over multiple sessions. The evolution of resins resistant to high temperatures and their patented mixing process give RACETEC™ TD SLICK a uniform behaviour both on a thermal and mechanical level. This provides a high resistance to thermal decay, thus keeping the chemical-physical properties of the tyre constant lap after lap, session after session
  • Plug & play solution, thanks to the choice of street-legal sizes that use sharp profiles but retain the geometries of tyres approved for road use, thus not requiring complicated set-up solutions for track use. RACETEC™ TD SLICK is the result of a development aimed at combining ease of driving, plug & play performance and the METZELER road racing imprint to allow all motorcyclists to enjoy a weekend on the track;
  • Reversible rear tyre, thanks to the symmetrical structure that evenly distributes the dynamic stresses and allows itself to be fully exploited, even on circuits with a prevalence of turns in one direction.

THE TYRE IN DETAILS

The compound
RACETEC™ TD SLICK features a racing compound that includes polymers with a low glass transition temperature, carbon black and high melting temperature resins. This combination has numerous advantages: first of all the ability of the tyre to get up to temperature very quickly, and even without the use of tyre warmers.

Strengthened by the experience accumulated in road racing such as the Tourist Trophy on the Isle of Man, used as a testing ground to test the versatility of its products, METZELER engineers have designed a compound capable of operating in a wide range of temperatures and asphalt conditions, in order to offer consistency in performance and resistance to cold tearing.

The exclusive patented CCM process – Compound Continuous Mixing process – maximizes the homogeneity of the components in the polymetric matrix and allows the tire to consistently offer high performances, from the first to the last lap, even if divided between several thermal cycles.

The structure
The carcass of the RACETEC™ TD SLICK rear tyre is characterised by a classic radial single-ply rayon structure, similar to that used in supersport road tyres, and represents a plug & play solution that allows riders to make the bike track ready while maintaining the standard set-up.

The zero-degree steel belts used both on the front and on the rear tyres are a patented technological solution that allows a high degree of structural flexibility and consequently a better feeling with the tyre. All this allows the motorcyclist to be more precise in the trajectory, adjusting it when already in mid-lean or delaying the braking point when entering the corner.

The profile
The rear RACETEC™ TD SLICK features a sharp profile that improves the handling of the motorcycle and at the same time increases the contact area when cornering, resulting in a considerable increase of grip. The profile of the front tyre reflects that of the rear for a balanced and harmonious behaviour of the tyre set.

The range
The RACETEC™ TD SLICK range includes the following sizes, all already available:

Pirelli Creates A Tyre That Fits Like A Glove

Pirelli fits the most powerful and technologically advanced production Ducati ever with DIABLOTM SUPERCORSA SP tyres in the sizes 120/70ZR17 and 200/60ZR17, specially developed to manage the high-performance level achieved by the Superleggera V4

Pirelli engineers developed a special and customised version of the DIABLOTM SUPERCORSA SP to achieve the challenging performance target required by the most powerful and technologically advanced production Ducati ever. This tyre is able to manage the extraordinary performance of the Superleggera V4 and make the most of the significant aerodynamic load generated by the biplane wings, which highly characterise the aggressive design of the motorcycle.

Ducati Superleggera V4

The Superleggera V4 Ducati is the world’s only street-legal motorcycle with a frame, subframe, swingarm and wheels – the entire load-bearing structure of the chassis – made entirely of carbon fibre. The 90° V4 engine is capable to deliver up to 234 HP, and the lowest achievable weight of 152Kg highlights an impressive power-to-weight ratio of 1.54 CV / kg. Another important aspect is that of aerodynamics: thanks to the biplane wings and other carbon fibre components, the bike is able to guarantee up to 50 kg of downforce, allowing better stability and acceleration.

As technical partner and exclusive tyre supplier, Pirelli worked closely with Ducati during the development of the Superleggera V4 and had to take some radical technical choices in order to create a highly innovative tyre to meet the challenging performance target set by Ducati. This situation  already happened previously, for example with the first Panigale V4 for which Pirelli developed the DIABLOTMSUPERCORSA SP V3 in the first ever street-legal size 200/60ZR17.

The current DIABLO™ SUPERCORSA SP belongs to the third generation of the popular race replica tyre and was developed also thanks to Pirelli’s constant commitment and experience in the racing field, in particular as the Official Sole Supplier of the FIM Superbike World Championship since 2004.

The front tyre is single compound, a solution that allows rapid warm-up and constant grip in any situation. The rear tyre is dual compound and uses a racing compound developed in the FIM Superbike World Championship on the shoulders. The sidewalls are slightly rounded as a result of the total redesign work made on the tyre structure with the aim of managing the performance that the Superleggera V4 is capable of. Finally, the sidewalls are special color edition tyres and bear the red Pirelli and Diablo logo.

DIABLO SUPERCORSA SP V3 CE

Over the years, DIABLO ™ SUPERCORSA SP has established a new reference point for race replica tyres and, thanks to its innovative features, has been chosen by Ducati as the original equipment of the brand new Superleggera V4, as well as many other motorcycle manufacturers from all over the world that have turned to Pirelli to equip their latest flagship models.

Metzeler Sportec™ M9 RR, The New Supersports Tyre To Face Difficult Challenges

METZELER has always been a leading brand in technological innovation, performance research and meeting the most challenging quality standards. Since its inception, the brand has consistently developed products to meet the growing expectations of the most demanding riders.

SPORTEC™ M9 RR is the latest supersports tyre of the manufacturer and is undoubtedly among the most anticipated products of all those motorcyclists who in recent years have appreciated the characteristics of its renowned predecessor SPORTEC™ M7 RR. It is designed for owners of supersports and naked bikes with a sporty riding style, that use their bikes every day and in all weather conditions: from the urban jungle to the fast runs of the weekend excursions.

The name SPORTEC™ M9 RR consolidates the technological tradition of METZELER: SPORTEC™ identifies the supersports road tyres of the METZELER portfolio while the RR suffix – acronym for Road Racing – refers to the iconic competitions such as the Tourist Trophy Isle of Man, won in its 2019 edition on METZELER RACETEC™ RR Slick tyres. METZELER has historically used road racing as a testing ground to validate the peak performance and versatility of its products thanks to the wide range of operating conditions that can be faced during these events.

When it comes to road racing, maximum tyre performance is required across an extremely wide range of asphalt and temperature conditions. Similarly, SPORTEC™ M9 RR is designed to deliver performance also in challenging conditions on road: a wide range of asphalts and temperatures, dry or wet conditions. Hence comes the claim chosen to accompany the introduction of the tyre SPORTEC™ M9 RR: RIDE THE UNEXPECTED.

SPORTEC M9 RR & BMW S 1000 RR

Features and benefits of SPORTEC™ M9 RR

The main benefits are:

  • a high level of grip thanks to the use of two-compound scheme using both Full Silica at the front and rear tyre. The compounds work in combination with the central tread pattern to ensure traction and directionality in the straight. Slick shoulders provide high levels of grip and lateral thrust at maximum lean angle on a wide spectrum of asphalts;
  • an excellent handling achieved thanks to an innovative structure that can improve the response of the tyre, depending on the use: comfort and riding pleasure at low speed, reactivity and precision at a higher speed;
  • a high level of wet grip made possible by the characteristics of the Full Silica compounds and their construction scheme, which also ensure a quick warm-up even on wet and cold roads.

THE TYRE IN DETAILS

The tread compound

Both the front and rear tyre of SPORTEC™ M9 RR are equipped with Full Silica shoulder compounds derived from racing-rain technology, refined to stabilise their behaviour at high temperatures, and newly formulated Full Silica central compounds.

SPORTEC M9 RR & TRIUMPH Speed Triple RS

The rear tyre compounds are arranged using a Cap & Base scheme that consists in overlaying the two lateral bands in soft compound, which ensure grip when cornering, to a layer of harder compound that ensures constant performance and thermal balance. The latter compound also forms the central band of the tyre for about 50mm, equal to 25% of the entire section, to improve mileage performance. The silica content in the central band of the rear has increased by 24% compared to SPORTEC M7™ RR.

The front tyre uses the same compounds as the rear to guarantee a homogeneous response and a perfect pairing between the two tyres. The central compound makes up about 33% of the tread section.

Full Silica compounds are used to improve the warm-up time, the level of mechanical grip on a wide range of asphalts and the chemical grip in wet conditions, benefiting the use on roads with irregular asphalt and in any weather condition.

In addition to METZELER’s experience in materials technology, the key to this technological breakthrough also lies in the CCM, an acronym for Compound Continuous Mixing, an exclusive patented mixing processcapable of maximising the dispersion and homogeneity of the components in the polymer matrix. The resins used in combination with silica give the final formulation a stable behaviour in a wide range of temperatures, from the lower ones of the first seasonal outings to the extreme ones reached during a summer session on track.

SPORTEC M9 RR & BMW S 1000 RR

The tread pattern

The tread design recognizes the features of the Pi – π – that, besides being distinctive of the SPORTEC™ product family, also have a functional purpose.

The grooves of the Greek Pi allow a certain degree of mobility to the portion of the tread they delimit, resulting in an improvement of the warm-up time even at low temperatures. They also serve to maximise the volume of water evacuated when riding in the wet.

SPORTEC™ M9 RR inherits the RACETEC™ RR central claw grooves from the technology developed for Road Races, in which it has gained recent victories at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy and North West 200. These details in the central band contribute to directional stability on the straight and participate in the evacuation of water in adverse weather conditions.

The tread pattern is designed for excellent water evacuation up to a 30-degree lean angle, while beyond this point the shoulder reaches void/fill ratios close to those of a Race Replica tyre. The shoulders of SPORTEC™ M9 RR are more slick than those of its predecessor, in order to improve support and lateral thrust at maximum lean anglewhere the function of water evacuation is no longer necessary.

SPORTEC M9 RR & BMW S 1000 RR

The Structure

METZELER engineers have designed for SPORTEC™ M9 RR a rayon structure that is 6% stiffer than the one of its predecessor, it is characterised by a lower density and the use of a greater quantity of rubber compound. The damping capacities of the latter improve the riding feeling, while when riding at a higher pace the benefits of this structure are high thrust values and greater responsiveness and driving precision.

Pirelli DIABLO ROSSO™ III chosen as original equipment for the new hypernaked Kawasaki Z H2

Protagonist at the EICMA show last November and recently presented to the international press in Las Vegas, the Kawasaki Z H2 represents the most radical and powerful motorcycle ever produced of the historic Z series. Now the flagship model of this family, the supercharged naked from Akashi is able to satisfy the most demanding motorcyclists thanks to a long list of cutting-edge technical and electronic features. The most defining feature is certainly the 988cc four-cylinder in-line supercharged engine that is able to deliver up to 200 PS at 11,000 rpm.

To transmit the high power generated by the engine to the ground, Kawasaki has selected Pirelli DIABLO ROSSO™ III in the 120/70 ZR 17 M/C (58W) TL (K) size for the front and 190/55 ZR 17 M/C (75W) TL (D) for the rear of the Z H2. The version of the front tyre (K) was designed by Pirelli engineers specifically in order to meet the Japanese company’s goals in terms of agility and handling. The rear version (D) manages the incredible power and immense torque of the supercharged engine ensuring high stability and traction management.

The DIABLO™ brand has always represented Pirelli excellence in the world of sport tyres for motorcycles. The DIABLO™ brand can boast almost 18 years of experience, technology and wins in the comparative tyre tests from the most authoritative specialist magazines and in international races at all levels. Within the DIABLO™ range, the DIABLO ROSSO™ brand identifies products dedicated to high performance use on roads and the DIABLO ROSSO™ III continues this pedigree and story of this successful brand.

Since 2004,Pirelli has made the FIM Superbike World Championship for production-based motorcycles the benchmark to develop not only the products used in competition, but also tyres used daily by motorcyclists all over the world. Inspired by the philosophy, which has now become a motto of the Italian tyre company, “We sell what we race, we race what we sell”, Pirelli has managed to bring to fruition all the experience acquired in this championship, applying normal production products for road use to some of the patents and materials developed for racing activity. The entire DIABLO ROSSO™ III project is the result of Pirelli’s long experience in the FIM Superbike World Championship: the design technology, the materials of the structure, and compound mixing process are the same as used for Superbikes.

The main technical characteristics of the DIABLO ROSSO™ III are:

1)     The bi compound rear tyre with high percentages of silica that improves grip in all conditions with the added benefit of giving extra mileage

2)     The profile derived from race tyres

3)     The tread which uses a pattern that is an evolution of the DIABLO™ Supercorsa DOT race tyre but features more tread grooves for better wet handling

DIABLO ROSSO III

All of this leads to the following advantages to motorcyclists by the new DIABLO ROSSO™ III:

1)     The excellent handling comes from the race tyre DNA andtransmits to the motorcyclist a strong feeling of grip and superb feedback on the bike. This is made possible by the combined characteristics of profile and structure that are derived directly from Superbike competition.

2)     The exceptional grip, able to transfer the power of motorcycles such as the Kawasaki Z H2, powered by a 988cc four-cylinder in-line supercharged engine. Grip and safety feeling not only on dry tarmac but also on wet, thanks to the new materials and experience gained by the brand in other segments.

3)     Providing consistent performance over the tyre’s life, ensuring confidence-inspiring grip and riding until the last mile.

The DIABLO ROSSO™ III can satisfy even the most demanding riders who want a sport bike tyre capable of guaranteeing great handling, excellent levels of grip, and high performance to the end of tyre life. More specifically, DIABLO ROSSO™ III is dedicated in particular to motorcyclists who love to ride their motorcycle quickly and aggressively.

Pirelli DIABLO™ Supercorsa SP chosen as original equipment for the new CBR1000RR-R Fireblade

Pirelli DIABLO™ Supercorsa SP has received another recognition of its leadership in the segment of racing replica tyres for road use. It has been chosen by Honda,  as original equipment for the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP (in 120/70 ZR17 front and 200/55 ZR17 rear), the much awaited supersport machines of the Japanese manufacturer. The top performing member of the DIABLO™ road family from Pirelli, now in its third generation, is confirmed once more as the first choice for high-performance motorcycles recently introduced on the market by the most prestigious motorcycle manufacturers.

The Pirelli DIABLO™ Supercorsa SP, currently in action at the Losail Circuit in Qatar, where the official press launch of the new Japanese supersport machine is taking place, are appointed as original equipment of the Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP after they were chosen in 2014 to equip the previous SP model from this iconic Japanese brand.

DIABLO™ Supercorsa SP is a concentration of technology which draws from Pirelli’s racing experience and heritage as sole supplier of the Superbike World Championship since 2004, transferring sport technology to high performance street legal products. This street tyre, designed for bikers who have a sporty street riding style but also love the track, provides racing performance typical of track-only products, allowing the user to have a product that can be used in both arenas without compromise. Compared to the SC compound version, the DIABLO™ Supercorsa SP has a rear bi-compound solution in order to give increased mileage and more grip while leaning. EPT (Enhanced Patch Technology) has also made it possible to use 23% more soft compound in the shoulder area compared to its predecessor with 33% of the pattern extension on each side, guaranteeing better grip in mid to full lean. Finally, the polymers used for the SP compound helps achieve earlier warm-up and improved grip in all conditions.

The SP compound extends the mileage vs. racing specific compounds and withstands temperature variations for extended periods of time, typical of road duty and providing higher performance on wet surfaces. The stiffness and friction coefficient of the compound have been studied to allow a very high cornering precision supported by an outstanding contact feeling, on top of the well-known high stability and absorption behaviour of Pirelli Supersport tyres.

The performance of the compound is further enhanced by the aggressive single element tread pattern, which is the same in the racing SC tyres, which is repeated six times over the tyre surface. The result is that the “naked” area of the shoulders is 24% wider compared to the previous DIABLO™ Supercorsa, increasing contact area and grip. The longitudinal grooves, expanding from the central area to the shoulder, improve wear regularity, especially under severe usage and helps drain water.

DIABLO SUPERCORSA SP V3 studio

The solutions adopted for the compound and the tread guarantee high levels of grip and traction, allowing the motorcycle to maintain high speed when leaning. This made it necessary to use a dedicated structure with greater resistance to deformation. This is why the DIABLO™ Supercorsa SP rear carcass is made from an innovative high module fibre, patented by Pirelli and developed in WSBK, with a considerably lower deformation ratio than the fibre normally used in street tyres. The result is a carcass that is more rigid, both at the centre and in the shoulder area. This provides greater resistance to the stress created by aggressive cornering or when accelerating early out of turns with the bike still in a leaning position.
