BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY

As a completely new concept between bicycle and motorbike, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY taps into fresh possibilities for the innovative, urban mobility of the future. It is one of five different concept vehicles that the BMW Group will use at the IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich to showcase its vision of individual mobility in and around the urban setting.

Under the common umbrella of electric mobility, digitalisation and sustainability, these five pioneering concepts form a versatile and sustainably conceived mobility mix on two and four wheels that comprehensively addresses a highly diverse range of mobility needs.

BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY and BMW i Vision AMBY.
AMBY stands for “Adaptive Mobility”. The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY and the BMW i Vision AMBY (see BMW i Vision AMBY press release) interpret the fundamental idea of adaptive urban mobility on two wheels based on differing facets. Both vehicles are electrically powered with three speed levels for different types of road. The drive allows up to 25 km/h on cycle paths, up to 45 km/h on inner-city roads and up to a top speed of 60 km/h on multi-lane roads and out of town. A helmet, insurance licence plates and the relevant driving licence are required to be able to travel at higher speeds, however. While the BMW i Vision AMBY as a high-speed pedelec requires constant pedalling in order to gain assistance from the electric drive, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY is accelerated using the throttle grip and has footrests instead of pedals, as is typical of a motorcycle.

The modes available to the rider are stored in the app on the smartphone that connects to the respective AMBY vision vehicle.

Manual selection of the speed level is conceivable, as is detection of the road by means of geofencing technology, thereby allowing automatic adjustment of the top speed. As there is currently no legal basis for such a vehicle with a modular speed concept, the idea behind the AMBY vision vehicles is to prompt legislation that will enable this kind of set-up. In this way, the BMW Group is demonstrating that it will continue to be involved in providing mobility options in big cities in the future and offers innovative solutions.

New stimuli for emotional mobility on two wheels.
“The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY takes us into new territory. For us, the focus is on user behaviour – the question is: how will customers want to get around in the future? What will they expect their vehicle to be capable of? This was precisely the starting point of our deliberations. Our aim was to develop an extremely emotional vehicle for smart mobility in and around the city that offered maximum freedom. The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY really does enable our customers to experience urban life in a whole new way, cover distances more flexibly and “break free” of the city from time to time, too. At the same time, BMW Motorrad is consistently pursuing its electromobility strategy for urban conurbations. It’s a fascinating introduction to the world of BMW Motorrad that also promises maximum riding pleasure,” explains Edgar Heinrich, Head of Design BMW Motorrad.

The design – the DNA of BMW Motorrad.
The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY defies all existing categories: visually akin to the world of bicycles, it is a motorbike at heart. Its slender proportions promise ruggedness and adventure, while its design suggests clear echoes of the expressive style and layout of an BMW Enduro motorbike. With chunky treads on both the 26-inch front wheel, which has a thinner tyre, and the 24-inch rear wheel with its more rounded tyre, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY clearly shows that it is both willing and able to go anywhere. The firmly integrated seat with a height of 830 mm is just as typical a motorbike feature as the fixed footrests.

The seat also acts as a design element over the flat, rising upper frame section, creating a striking flyline. This produces a completely new, fresh look for BMW Motorrad – a link between the e-bike and motorbike world.
The large energy storage unit and drive unit form a dark graphic block at the centre of the frame.

The large-dimensioned bicycle fork on the front wheel features protectors and gives the entire front section a more massive, powerful look. A small headlight with the U-shaped BMW Motorrad light signature is a clear reference to the roots of the concept, as is the double LED element as a tail light. Another BMW Motorrad feature is that the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY is accelerated from the handlebars, as is customary on a motorbike.
With a total weight of just 65 kg, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY is significantly lighter than other motorbikes, ensuring it offers excellent manoeuvrability and agility.

Colour and material concept featuring depth and unexpected details.
As compared to a conventional combustion engine, the concept of the electric drive in the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY means there is little in the way of visible mechanics.
For this reason, its technical heart is deliberately disguised and showcased in a striking machine-like style. This accentuates the highly elaborated colour and material concept, which goes well beyond the traditional dark underlying colour scheme and use of white highlights.

In its use of materials, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY cross-references two other concept vehicles that will also see their world premiere at the IAA Mobility 2021: The BMW i Vision Circular and the BMW i Vision AMBY. The trim material used on the energy storage unit – known as “floating grey polymers” – is also used in the bumper of the BMW i Vision Circular. It consists of recycled plastic and can itself be fed back into the material cycle at the end of the product lifecycle. Meanwhile the material used for the seat is also to be found in the saddle of the BMW i Vision AMBY and in the tyres of the BMW i Vision Circular. Based on recycled plastic granulate and sporting a fascinating terrazzo look, it demonstrates how several materials can be given a second life with a new form and function.

Asymmetrical design of the sides of the vehicle.
In keeping with the unexpected, self-assured character of the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY, its two sides have deliberately been designed distinctively. On both sides, the white “AMBY” lettering catches the eye above the light-coloured drive unit, making a striking statement as a stylised graphic on the trim of the energy storage unit. While the lettering on the left gains additional visual depth from a colourfully shimmering, iridescent drop shadow, the inscription on the right appears deliberately without a drop shadow. Below the energy storage unit there are two iridescent elements that add a further accentuation.

On the right-hand side of the vehicle, three small turquoise blue tubes visibly emerge from the silhouette, clearly alluding to the electric heart of the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY. Next to this is a quote by Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad: „Electro-mobility will be very significant for the future of motorcycling. We foresee a slew of upcoming products with a focus on electric propulsion, particularly in the field of urban mobility. And I’m not only thinking of classic scooters here, but also of alternative modern, emotional products. Electro-mobility on two wheels needs to be really fun and adventurous and BMW is committed to developing corresponding products.”

On closer inspection, the interplay between the technoid pixel font with the classic serif font reflects a great attention to detail at several points: together these bridge the gap between the past and the future – just like the vision vehicle itself. The coordinates on the right are a reference to the BMW Motorrad Design Studio in Munich, where the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY came into being. On the opposite side, the letters “AMBY” also appear in Morse code, but with dashes visualising the dots. In their perfect interplay, all these carefully conceived details create a unique graphic and a highly contemporary sense of style.

The smartphone as the key.
The specially developed app enables the user to activate the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY for riding, read in their stored driving licence classes and make use of the appropriate insurance cover on an on-demand basis as required. In this way, the app performs the classic key function while also making use of the customary identification options provided by the smartphone such as Face ID. Basic functions and status queries (e.g. current charge status) are available as in the BMW App. Further developments and adjustments to the software can be provided to customers at any time via over-the-air updates.
The smartphone shown in the vision vehicle charges inductively on the magnetic holder in the rider’s lower field of vision. These connectivity options would also allow anti-theft protection and the freely programmable immobiliser to be offered as basic functions.
And the answer to the question “Where is my BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY?” would be just a click away on the smartphone, too.

Geofencing as a key technology.
Instead of choosing the riding mode yourself, geofencing technology combined with the detailed HERE map service could provide the required parameters for automatically adjusting speed levels (25/45/60 km/h) and the matching insurance cover. This technology enables the vehicle to detect the type of road, cycle path or slow-traffic area currently being used so that the maximum permitted speed can be automatically adjusted. In this way, the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY would transform from a vehicle similar to an S-pedelec to something that is more motorcycle-inspired. The user cannot override the mode. The required licence plate takes the form of an innovative display surface, so the mode selected at any given time can be easily recognised and read by other road users.

Additional technological innovations are conceivable for the BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY, too: an optimised ABS system could further increase safety, as could an automatic high beam or brake light assistant, as well as daytime running lights. A tyre pressure monitoring system such as the one already available as an optional extra in BMW Group motorcycles is also conceivable. Finally, potential safety features could also include a distance radar with a range of up to 140 m to provide a visual and acoustic warning in the app when there is a vehicle approaching from behind.

The BMW Motorrad Vision AMBY shows one possible manifestation of what the modern, urban mobility of tomorrow might look like. It is intended as a blueprint to drive forward conversations about future-oriented travel in cities.

The new BMW R 18 Transcontinental and the new BMW R 18 B

The new BMW R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B: “The Big Boxer” as the Grand American Tourer for luxurious travelling and as Bagger for cool American highway cruising.

With the new R 18 Transcontinental, BMW Motorrad is adding a Grand American Tourer to the R 18 family as well as the R 18 B “Bagger”, which is particularly popular in the USA. As with the previous R 18 models, the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B combine the thrilling power of the “Big Boxer” with a classic chassis concept based on historical models, exclusive equipment and a stylish design.

This makes the R 18 Transcontinental ideal for travelling and long-distance rides in American riding style – both for riding solo and with a pillion and luggage. The R 18 B, on the other hand, is designed as a “rider’s machine” delivering emotional driving pleasure and ideal for cool touring and cruising.

R 18 Transcontinental

Special features of the new R 18 Transcontinental include:
Front fairing with high wind shield, wind deflector and flaps. Cockpit with four analogue round instruments and 10.25 inch TFT colour display, additional headlamp, Marshall sound system, engine protection bars, cases, top case, seat heating, chrome trim and an engine in Silver metallic.

In contrast, the new R 18 B does without a top case and, in the style of a “bagger”, offers a low windshield, a slimmer seat and a matt black metallic engine among other things.

R 18 B

The most powerful BMW boxer engine of all time with full torque.
The heart of the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B is a 2-cylinder boxer engine, the “Big Boxer”, which is a completely newly development for the R 18 models. Not only its impressive appearance, but also its technical specifications show its ties to the traditional air-cooled boxer engines that have provided inspiring riding experiences for more than seven decades since BMW Motorrad began manufacturing motorcycles in 1923. The most powerful 2-cylinder flat twin engine ever built in motorbike series production boasts an engine capacity of 1,802 cc. It generates an output of 67 kW (91 hp) at 4 750 rpm. In the 2,000 to 4,000 rpm range, it delivers more than 150 Nm of torque at all times as well as elemental pulling power and sonorous sound.

Double-loop tube frame made of steel and a backbone made of sheet metal formed parts and rear swinging arm with enclosed axle drive in rigid-frame design.
The heart of the chassis of the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B is a double-loop tube steel frame made of steel with a backbone of sheet metal formed parts. Its design perpetuates the longstanding BMW Motorrad tradition of this frame type. The particularly high manufacturing quality and attention to detail are also evident in barely perceptible details such as the welded joints between steel tubes and cast or forged parts. Like the legendary BMW R 5, the rear swinging arm, which is manufactured in a similar design, encloses the rear axle drive in the same style using bolted connections.

Telescopic fork with fork sleeves, cantilever suspension strut, light alloy cast wheels and disc brakes in combination with BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS.

The suspension elements of the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B deliberately dispense with any adjustment options that the rider has to make. Instead, a telescopic fork and a directly swinging-arm mounted cantilever suspension strut with travel-dependent damping and automatically adjustable spring preload ensure superior light-alloy cast wheel control and responsive suspension comfort.

In order to achieve the best possible ride response even when riding with a pillion and fully loaded, the rear suspension strut features travel-dependent damping and automatic load compensation. As in the legendary BMW R 5, the tubes of the telescopic fork are encased in fork sleeves. The fork tube diameter is 49 mm, suspension travel is 120 mm at the front and rear. The new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B are decelerated by a double disc brake at the front and a single disc brake at the rear in conjunction with four-piston fixed callipers and BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS.

Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) as standard. Active Cruise Control (ACC) – cruise control with integrated distance control for relaxed touring as an ex works option.
The R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B are already equipped as standard with DCC electronic cruise control (Dynamic Cruise Control). DCC automatically regulates the riding speed set by the rider. Dynamic means that the pre-selected speed is kept constant even when riding downhill. Active Cruise Control (ACC) allows relaxed gliding with distance control – without the rider having to adjust the speed to the vehicle in front. With the aid of radar sensors integrated in the front fairing, the motorcycle is either accelerated automatically to adjust the speed or the new, standard full integral braking system is applied for deceleration purposes, depending on the situation on the road. ACC also ensures particularly safe cornering. Where necessary, the cornering control system automatically reduces the speed, giving the rider the right speed for a comfortable and safe banking angle.

Coherent ergonomics for best possible motorcycle control.
The new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B feature a casual, so-called “mid-mounted footpeg” position of the footrests, entirely in keeping with the BMW Motorrad philosophy. This classic position behind the cylinders is not only typical of BMW, it also allows a relaxed and active riding position for the best possible motorcycle control. The R 18 Transcontinental is equipped with an especially comfortable seat and seat heating as standard to ensure long-distance riding comfort even in two-person operation. The R 18 B has a somewhat slimmer two-person seat bench. The new R 18 Transcontinental is fitted as standard with running boards and the new R 18 B with wider and more comfortable footrests than the R 18.

Cockpit featuring classically designed round instruments and 10.25” TFT colour screen with map navigation for convenient route planning and extensive connectivity as standard.
The cockpit, specially designed for the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B, with four analogue round instruments and a 10.25 inch TFT colour display, blends into the classic appearance harmoniously. Featuring the iconic “BERLIN BUILT” lettering, it follows the classic style of the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B on the one hand, and on the other hand offers a perfectly readable TFT colour display providing a maximum of functionality and information.

Three riding modes as well as ASC and MSR as standard for a high degree of riding fun and safety. Reversing aid and Hill Start Control as an ex works option.
In order to meet individual customer needs, the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B also feature the three riding modes “Rain”, “Roll” and “Rock” as standard, which is unusual in this segment. The standard equipment also includes ASC (Automatic Stability Control), which ensures a high level of riding safety. In addition, the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B are equipped with an engine drag torque control (MSR) as standard. In addition to other options, a reversing aid makes manoeuvring a comfortable affair and the Hill Start Control function makes starting off uphill easy.

The new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B: Iconic streamlining combined with rigid frame look and modern technology.
The new R 18 Transcontinental stands out as a luxurious tourer and the new R 18 B as a stylish “Bagger” with its characteristic “streamlining”, which perfectly integrates the front fairing, cases and, in the case of the R 18 Transcontinental, the top case. They transfer the iconic style of the great tourers and cruisers of yesteryear to the present day. The purist design, which has been shaped by numerous BMW Motorrad classics, lives on in many details. Functional and style-defining elements such as the double-loop tube frame, the 24 litre pear-drop fuel tank, the open universal shaft drive or the double-line paintwork (ex works option) are reminiscent of legendary BMW boxer motorcycles. The suspension also harks back splendidly to the old days. Together with the double-sided swinging arm and a cantilever suspension strut, the rigid frame layout of the R 5 has been perfectly transferred to modern times.

Audio system with Marshall sound system: A new digital sound dimension as standard ex works.
With the Marshall sound system, the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B offer an intense sound experience. Already as standard the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B feature a sound system developed in collaboration with the British manufacturer Marshall, featuring 2-way speakers integrated into the front of the fairing. Black cover grilles with white Marshall lettering round off the classic look. The Marshall Gold Series Stage 1 and Stage 2 sound systems are optionally ex works to provide even more intensive listening pleasure. Up to 4 loudspeakers and 2 subwoofers with 280 watts of total output provide incomparable sound quality and “good vibrations”. For 60 years, Marshall, originally from Hanwell, London, now based in Bletchley, Milton Keynes (UK), have produced legendary guitar amplifiers used by the world’s best musicians. Since 2012 they have expanded their audio quality into award winning headphones and active speakers designed for music lovers.

Exclusive look in paint and chrome.
Right from the time of market launch, the new R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B will be available worldwide as exclusive R 18 Transcontinental First Edition and R 18 B First Edition versions. They combine the R 18 look with exclusive features in classic black paintwork with white double-lining. Further highlights are the specially designed surfaces (Chrome Package), high-grade stitching on the seat and the “First Edition” lettering.

The Original BMW Motorrad Accessories range offers a maximum of individualisation options for tailoring the R 18 Transcontinental and R 18 B to your personal taste. The new BMW CE 04 – the silent revolution: A new chapter in electrically powered urban two-wheel mobility.

Urban freedom

“It’s early in the morning. The city is awakening. On the way to my garage I breathe in the still cool air. I’m wear a casually cut parka that’s both fashionable and functional at the same time. The protectors are inconspicuous but give me a sense of security. I’m ready for the day to start.

My BMW CE 04 is in the garage. I am thrilled by its futuristic design style. The low position of the battery gives the scooter an entirely new geometry – a complete departure from previous conventions. I’m glad to see it again. It’s a great feeling – every day.

For me, it’s the symbol of a new era – the era of the silent revolution.

The first birds are chirping, the urban jungle is awakening. The sounds of the city begin to swell. Everything is set in motion. People move – with each other and in parallel. Paths cross.

What will the new day bring? Tapas with friends at the little bar by the river? Or the exhibition at the modern art museum? First of all there are appointments at the office. Workshops, meetings, customer visits. This is what life feels like.

I pair my smartphone with the scooter, and with a flick of my wrist I activate the parka. Its LEDs light up. I’m quiet, but I want to be seen. It’s all so simple and smooth.

We’re off again at last. Even when I was having my breakfast, I couldn’t wait. Not even the birds notice me. I glide almost silently through my neighbourhood. I’m a part of the city again.

People start to look at me at the traffic lights. My sitting position is upright, relaxed. A new message flashes on the display, my smartphone is charging in the storage compartment.

Green light. With the scooter’s torque, I can float away ahead of the rest. I’m a rocket. But a silent one.

I feel as if I was on the Bonanza bike back in the day – cool and superior, but now connected to the world and one step ahead. Technology and style. Is this freedom? Yes – only better. No traffic jams, no having to search for a parking space. For me, it’s all time I save.

Acceleration, speed, bends – the BMW CE 04 doesn’t just master them, it redefines them. I glide through the traffic – the seat itself seems to float. It feels just right. Surfing bends is superbly enjoyable. Pure fun, from wave to wave.

The evening was beautiful, down by the river. We laughed a lot. The city motorway doesn’t forgive mistakes – my scooter sprints away and my parka glows in the dark of night. I’m clearly visible and arrive safely at my destination. Quietly, I glide into the driveway to my garage, again almost unnoticed by the birds. Good night, my city. We’ll be in touch.”

The new BMW CE 04 – the silent revolution: A new chapter in electrically powered urban two-wheel mobility.

With the new BMW CE 04, BMW Motorrad continues to consistently pursue its electromobility strategy for urban conurbations. As the final series production vehicle of the BMW Motorrad Concept Link originally showcased in 2017 and the near-series BMW Motorrad Definition CE 04 unveiled in 2020, the BMW CE 04 opens up a whole new chapter in two-wheel urban mobility. With its electric drive, forward-looking design and innovative connectivity solutions, the new scooter merges transport and communication functions for a new brand of mobility in the urban environment.

Plenty of power and ample range for supreme riding in the city and in urban areas.

With a maximum output of 31 kW (42 hp), the new BMW CE 04 has a powerful motor and offers outstanding riding pleasure. For the classic “traffic light start” discipline from 0 to 50 km/h, it takes just fast 2.6 seconds. Even in the reduced output L3e-A1 vehicle class, 23 kW (31 hp) drive power is available. The maximum speed of both versions is 120 km/h – for speedy progress not just in the city but on main roads and motorway sections, too.

The new BMW CE 04 has an ample battery cell capacity of 60.6 Ah (8.9 kWh), providing a range of some 130 kilometres (reduced output version: 100 km). This enables day-to-day emission-free riding in the city, in an urban setting and for smaller-scale fun tours after work or at the weekend – with complete peace of mind.

Innovative electric drive with liquid-cooled electric motor.

The new BMW CE 04 has a permanent magnet electric motor mounted in the frame between the battery and the rear wheel, as used in a similar form in BMW cars such as the 225xe Active Tourer. BMW Motorrad conducted extensive riding tests to develop a specific type of recuperation for each riding mode, giving the rider a high-level convenience. This means that optimum performance and riding characteristics are available in every situation on the road.

Short charging times and charging technology based on the system used in cars.

The lithium-ion battery is charged using the integrated charging device either at a regular household socket, a wallbox or a public charging station. When the battery is completely flat, charging time ideally lasts 4 hours and 20 minutes. With the quick charger available as an optional extra with an output of up to 6.9 kW (2.3 kW is the standard level), charging time is reduced to just 1 hour and 40 minutes when the battery is completely flat. If the battery level is only 20 per cent and the battery is charged to 80 per cent, the charging time is reduced to just 45 minutes with the optional quick charger. Depending on the market, the standard charging cable with a charging capacity of 2.3 kW comes as standard with the BMW CE 04.

A Mode 3 charging cable is required for fast charging at the wallbox at home or at a public charging station. In the same way as with BMW automobiles, BMW Charging solutions are available for the BMW CE 04, too – for maximum flexibility based on numerous customised programmes for charging at home, on the road and at work.

Increased riding stability through slip control by means of ASC (Automatic Stability Control). DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) as an ex works option.

This traction control system is available on the new BMW CE 04, comparable to the Automatic Stability Control in BMW motorcycles with combustion engine. ASC limits engine torque in relation to rear wheel slip. Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), available as an optional extra, provides even greater riding safety. DTC enables even more safe acceleration, especially in banking position.

Three riding modes “ECO”, “Rain” and “Road” for efficient, day-to-day use as standard. “Dynamic” riding mode for further enhanced riding pleasure as an ex works option.

In developing the BMW CE 04, BMW Motorrad attached particular importance to providing opportunities for the rider to make an individual choice between maximum efficiency and maximum riding fun. Accordingly, the new BMW CE 04 features the three riding modes “ECO”, “Rain” and “Road” as standard. The additional “Dynamic” riding mode is also available as an ex works option, enabling the scooter to accelerate at an even swifter pace.

Directionally stable suspension with one-piece tubular steel main frame for smooth handling and a high level of ride comfort.

The main frame is a tubular steel construction. The front wheel is controlled by a telescopic fork with a slider tube diameter of 35 mm. Rear wheel control consists of a single-sided swing arm. At the rear, suspension and damping are performed by a directly controlled, fully covered spring strut. The new BMW CE 04 is fitted with generously sized tyres, with 120/70 R15 67H at the front and 160/60 R15 56H at the rear.

Powerful brake system with latest-generation ABS. ABS Pro with banking capability as an ex works option.

At the front, a twin disc brake ensures secure deceleration, supported by a single-disc system at the rear. In addition, BMW Motorrad ABS ensures a high level of active safety. ABS Pro, available as an optional extra, goes even further: By means of a banking sensor, ABS Pro also controls braking on bends, thereby offering the greatest possible safety.

10.25” TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation for convenient route planning and extensive connectivity as standard.

The new BMW CE 04 comes fitted as standard with a 10.25-inch TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation and connectivity. Its excellent readability, clear menu navigation and highly integrated operating concept put the new BMW CE 04 at the top of the scooter segment. For the first time, the new 10.25-inch colour screen makes it possible to display a navigation map in the instrument cluster, so no additional display is needed.

Powerful LED lighting units all round. Adaptive Headlight Pro and light functions as ex works options.

The lighting units on the new BMW CE 04 are based on state-of-the-art LED technology. They include a headlamp for high beam and low beam at the front. In addition to a rear light featuring LED technology, there are also LED turn indicators. The indicator lamps likewise use LED technology. Even greater safety at night is offered by the adaptive turning light Headlight Pro, available as an ex works option. Here, the rider benefits from further improved illumination of the road when cornering for even safer riding at night. Special light functions such as “Welcome” and “Good Bye” are also available as ex works options.

Future-oriented design and colour scheme.

The new BMW CE 04 embodies a new, forward-looking form of urban two-wheeled mobility in its design as well, featuring an innovative style that arouses emotions for this new drive technology while instantly identifying the scooter as a member of the BMW Motorrad family. The modern surface finish is in a striking Light White, complemented by matt black sections in the front and side areas as well as the “floating” seat. In addition, there are trend-setting wheels (solid wheels) featuring a disc-wheel look and a side stand that is integrated in the design styling. The new BMW CE 04 in Avantgarde Style (ex works option) is a striking, colourful statement of contemporary urban mobility. In this style, the colour Magellan Grey metallic is supplemented with a black/orange seat, an orange wind deflector and various graphics.

Brush up on bike cleaning with Nippy Norman

This handy kit from BMW specialist Nippy Normans contains a selection of brushes to deal with everything from dirt-shifting to detailing.

An ideal gift for Father’s Day (20th June), there are 10 brushes in total, including a large washing brush (for bodywork), round brushes (for hard-to-reach spaces, e.g. around the engine and brake callipers) and a wheel rim brush.

There are also paint brushes, for detailing, and even a brass wire brush, which can be used to shift crud from downpipes and sumps.

The wide variety of brushes allows users to reseve some for particularly grimey jobs and others for more delicate areas.

And when you’ve finished, everything can be tucked away neatly in the net bag, so nothing is left lying around to get lost in the darkest corner of the workshop.

The Pure&Crafted Festival initiated by BMW Motorrad

The Hives and Jake Bugg confirmed as first acts. Festival tickets are pre-selling for 55,00 € now.

Launched in Berlin in 2015 and initiated by BMW Motorrad, the Pure&Crafted Festival will return to the banks of the Spree river in 2021.
This year, BMW Motorrad will once again be the title sponsor of the event.

For the first time, the event will be held in the Berlin trade fair’s event-proven Summer Garden, which offers a unique setting in the heart of City West directly under the Radio Tower. Here, fans can experience the special mix of live music, motorbike culture and new heritage lifestyle on 17 and 18 September 2021.

And this year, too, visitors and music fans can look forward to some truly special live music. These acts have already confirmed: The Hives and Jake Bugg.

The Hives already proved that they belong in the top league of live bands at the premiere of the festival six years ago. The Swedes will rock the stage again this year. The Briton Jake Bugg will have his new “Saturday Night, Sunday Morning” album, which is to be released in August, with him when he comes in September. The singer-songwriter was already on stage at the legendary Glastonbury Festival at the age of 16 and has been delivering one masterpiece after another since his debut in 2012. So you can look forward to lots of rock’n’roll, guitar riffs and drums. And it’s about time, too!

Away from the stage, of course, much will revolve around motorcycles and the world around them: in the Wheels Area, exciting custom bikes will once again be waiting to be discovered. But the focus is not only on these unique art objects and their makers, but also on everyone who shares their passion for motorbikes. Having petrol-laced conversations and exchanging shared experiences will be at the top of the list and motorcycle culture will once again be celebrated at this year’s Pure&Crafted Festival.
In addition to other highlights & specials featuring new spectacular custom bikes that will be announced soon, the General Store completes the unique programme of the Pure&Crafted Festival. New heritage culture, fashion and lifestyle accessories will be the focus of attention here.

And of course there will be no shortage of selected drinks and varied food offerings so visitors can really experience Pure&Crafted with all their senses.

As everyone’s health and safety is paramount, the event will of course be corona compliant. BMW Motorrad expands equipment range for the R 18 and R 18 Classic

The existing range of optional equipment and the still growing range of Original BMW Motorrad accessories offer many possibilities for customizing the R 18 and R 18 Classic according to your own preferences. With the introduction of the Option 719 parts, BMW Motorrad is now adding features that enable highest-level bike customisation based on historical roots. After all, the internal code “719” at BMW Motorrad already stood for particularly high-quality and exclusive special equipment, unusual special requests and unique items decades ago. The new Option 719 parts will be available from September 2021.

Option 719 Design Package AERO.
The Option 719 Design Package AERO includes the cylinder head covers on the left and right, the front cover and the intake snorkel cover on the left and right. All parts are made of aluminium sheet with a brushed, colourless anodised surface. The cylinder head covers feature finely wrought air vents reminiscent of the “streamliners” of the 1920s and 1930s. The highlight is a badge on the front and side covers: This is made of solid copper which is chrome-plated and partially finished in white. The white paint enclosing the number sequence “719” is reminiscent of historical emblems that were typically lined with enamel during that era.

Option 719 seat.
For the new R 18 and R 18 Classic, the Option 719 seat is a particularly exclusive alternative to the standard seat. In addition to the standard seat height, it offers integrated seat heating as well as a fascinating material selection and finish. For example, two black upper materials are used, which are combined with diamond-shaped quilted embossing. An embroidered BMW logo and the 719 symbol on the side round off this exclusive seat.

Option 719 Paint finish Galaxy Dust metallic/Titanium Silver 2 metallic.
The colour Galaxy Dust metallic is a flip-flop finish that shimmers in a spectrum from violet to turquoise blue, depending on the incidence of light. In addition, the many large effect pigments create a unique visual effect when exposed to sunlight. This special finish is combined with a Titanium Silver 2 metallic mirror on the fuel tank. The transition between the two colour surfaces consists of a hand-applied smoke effect familiar from the legendary R 90 S. In addition, the mirror surface is surrounded by a classic white double line.

Option 719 Wheels AERO and ICON.
The two Option 719 wheel sets AERO and ICON in the basic colours matt silver and matt black, respectively, provide a particularly refined and technically sophisticated look. The cast alloy wheels feature a six-spoke design. The milled filigree ribs of the spokes are a real eye-catcher. The milled areas give the aluminium a fascinating contrast with the paint colour of the wheels – hence the name Contrast Cut.

R 18 and R 18 Classic: Successful market launch with the First Edition models.
BMW Motorrad entered the cruiser segment with the market launch of the R 18 in September 2020, followed in February 2021 by the R 18 Classic, the second member of the new model series. The R 18 Classic embodies the nostalgic tourer, echoing the beginnings of the big cruisers suitable for touring. Compared to the very purist R 18, the R 18 Classic is characterised above all by the large windshield, the pillion seat, the saddlebags, the LED auxiliary headlights and the 16-inch front wheel.

Both R 18 models are rooted in the tradition of historic BMW motorcycles. Both technically and visually, they borrow from renowned models such as the BMW R 5 and focus back on the essentials of the motorcycle: purist, straight-up technology and the boxer engine as the epicentre of riding pleasure, combined with “good vibrations”.

The very successful market launch of the BMW R 18 and the R 18 Classic was carried out with the First Edition models. Production of these exclusive, limited-edition models will already cease at the end of July 2021, after more than 13,000 units have been manufactured to date.

The new BMW R 1250 RT

For more than four decades, the BMW Motorrad abbreviation “RT” has been synonymous in the world of dynamic touring motorcycles. To ensure that this continues to be the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has made extensive changes and innovations to the new R 1250 RT.

The new BMW R 1250 RT: The benchmark among dynamic tourers is even more sophisticated and innovative for maximum motorcycle enjoyment on extended journeys.

For more than four decades, the BMW Motorrad abbreviation “RT” has been synonymous in the world of dynamic touring motorcycles, combining comfort on long journeys with dynamic riding pleasure on country roads. More than that: a BMW RT has always sets the benchmark in this class. To ensure that this continues to be the case in the future, BMW Motorrad has made extensive changes and innovations to the new R 1250 RT – for even greater riding pleasure and touring enjoyment at the very highest level. As before, the legendary 2-cylinder boxer engine ensures comfortable travel and dynamic propulsion. It still has an engine capacity of 1 254 cc and delivers 100 kW (136 hp) in the current EU5 registration, too. Thanks to BMW ShiftCam technology for varying valve timing and valve lift on the intake side, it offers superior power across the entire speed range, extremely smooth running and refinement as well as outstanding fuel consumption and emission values.

Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and new “Eco” riding mode as standard. Riding Modes Pro with riding mode preselection and engine drag torque control (MSR) as options.

The standard Dynamic Traction Control DTC ensures a high level of riding safety due to excellent traction, while the new standard “Eco” riding mode helps the rider achieve the best possible fuel efficiency.

The new R 1250 RT Adventure can be fitted with the “Pro Riding Modes” as an ex works option. Another new component of Riding Modes Pro is the engine drag torque control (MSR): this can be used to safely avoid unstable riding conditions that can occur during coasting or downshifting due to excessive brake slip at the rear wheel.

New BMW Full Integral ABS Pro as standard.

In its latest edition, the R 1250 RT is equipped as standard with the new BMW Motorrad Full Integral ABS Pro. This is a braking system in which both the hand and foot brake levers are used to apply the front and rear brakes simultaneously. Combined with the qualities of ABS Pro with banking angle optimisation and dynamic brake force distribution, Full Integral ABS Pro is the perfect braking system for a touring bike such as the R 1250 RT.

New full LED headlamp with turning light and new light functions as ex works options.

The new standard full LED headlamp already illuminates the road with unrivalled brightness and clarity. The new headlamp with swivel function goes one step further: with the “Adaptive Turning Light” option, the dipped beam of the standard full LED headlamp turns into the bend according to the banking position. In this way, the bend is almost fully illuminated because the light moves to where the motorcycle is heading. Thanks to new light functions, the riding experience on the new R 1250 RT is even more intense – and there are practical benefits, too. For example, the “Welcome” function, the “Goodbye” function for taking leave and the “Follow me home” function for guidance purposes will be available as optional extras in future.

Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) as standard. Active Cruise Control (ACC) – cruise control with integrated distance control for relaxed touring as an ex works option.

In connection with the standard Dynamic Cruise Control (DCC) , “dynamic” means that the preselected speed is kept at a constant level when riding downhill. If the braking effect of the engine is not sufficient for this, the fully integral brake is automatically activated so as to maintain the desired riding speed. Active Cruise Control (ACC), available as an optional extra, goes one step further. Thanks to radar sensor technology, it enables relaxed gliding with distance control – and there is no need for the rider to adapt road speed to the vehicle in front.

The new R 1250 RT is fitted with a 10.25-inch TFT colour screen with integrated map navigation and connectivity. Its excellent readability, clear menu navigation and highly integrated operating concept put the new R 1250 RT at the top of the range of serial production motorcycles. For the first time on a motorcycle, the new 10.25-inch colour screen makes it possible to display a navigation map in the instrument cluster, so no additional display is needed.

Along with the introduction of standard connectivity and the navigation map shown on the screen, the new “Comfort telephony with extended smartphone connection” option is available. A smartphone can be securely accommodated in a storage compartment that is protected from splash water and ventilated by an electric fan, and its battery can be kept ready for use inductively or via USB connection. With the Audio System 2.0, the new R 1250 RT offers an even more intense sound experience than its predecessor.

Thanks to a newly developed front fairing, the new R 1250 RT now not only looks fresher and more dynamic, it also has enhanced travel and touring qualities thanks to additional aerodynamic advancements. Not only does the new front fairing enclose the new full LED headlamps, for example, but the upper section of the fairing is now reduced in height, too. This results in a wider field of vision for the rider, while at the same time making the new R 1250 RT appear lighter and more dynamic. In addition to the attractive basic version in Alpine White 3, the new R 1250 RT is also available in the refined Style variants “Elegance”, “Sport” and “Option 719”.

Wunderlich fob off keyless bike hackers

Munich. With the BMW G 310 GS, BMW Motorrad is creating a new experience in the displacement segment below 500 ccm since 2016. Extremely compact, robust and highly versatile in design, it immediately established itself as a genuine BMW GS – especially for newcomers. Four years after its début, BMW Motorrad now presents the new BMW G 310 GS. Versatile, safer and more dynamic – whether in everyday traffic, during pleasure rides on country roads or off-road in easy terrain.

Single-cylinder engine according to EU-5 homologation with automatic idle boost and electromotive throttle controller.
The heart of the new BMW G 310 GS is still the reliable 313 ccm liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with four valves, two overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection. The cylinder inclination to the rear and the cylinder head rotated by 180 degrees with intake at the front and exhaust at the rear remain the design characteristics. This arrangement follows the logic of optimal combustion air ducting and results in a particularly compact vehicle architecture. With an output of 25 kW (34 HP) at 9 500 rpm and a maximum torque of 28 Nm at 7 500 rpm, the single-cylinder engine of the new BMW G 310 GS is the ideal partner for dynamic motorcycling pleasure, including in the current EU 5 homologation.

For use in the new BMW G 310 GS, the engine has been equipped with a so-called “electronic throttle grip” (electromotive throttle controller) and now offers an even more sensitive throttle response. Automatic idle speed increase when starting also prevents a possible sudden stalling of the engine. The self-boosting anti-hopping clutch is also new. It reduces engine drag torque and provides a significant increase in driving safety – particularly during braking manoeuvres involving simultaneous downshifting. It also offers significantly reduced operating forces at the clutch lever.

New LED headlight and LED flashing turn indicators – seeing and being seen optimally.
Whereas the BMW G 310 GS was already equipped with brake lights in LED technology, the new BMW G 310 GS now has a full-LED headlight for even better visibility at night and LED flashing turn indicators for increased visibility in traffic. The new LED headlight not only ensures particularly bright and homogeneous illumination of the road. Due to the modified connection, distracting vibrations of the light cone are a thing of the past. The three light functions high beam, low beam and, depending on the country, daytime driving light can be conveniently operated using the left handlebar controls.

Hand lever adjustable in four stages for brake and clutch.
Both, the clutch lever and the handbrake lever are now adjustable in four stages. It thus now provides ergonomic benefits – particularly for people with small hands. Stage 3 of the brake lever adjustment corresponds to the grip width until now. In the 1st position the brake lever is 6 mm closer to the handlebar.

Gently revised design with an attractive basic colour and two exclusive style variants.
GS is a promise at BMW Motorrad. It stands for absolute functionality, reliability and robustness. Accordingly, the new BMW G 310 GS can be recognised at first glance as a genuine BMW GS. With its characteristic windscreen, high front fender, striking flyline and short, high rear end, it has the main elements of the large BMW R 1250 GS models – and has an even more aggressive and dynamic appearance from the front thanks to the new LED headlight.

Its colour concept also reflects that it is part of the BMW GS family. What all three colour variants of the BMW G 310 GS have in common are the engine housing covers for the alternator, clutch and water pump, now painted in metallic titanium grey.

In addition to the typical GS colours in white with the basic colour plain polar white and tank side panels in grey, the new BMW G 310 GS has a very sporty appearance in Rallye style. The frame painted red and Kyanit blue metallic for the tank centre cover and front emphasise the off-road talents and give the motorcycle an extremely dynamic appearance.

As the “40 Years GS” edition, however, the BMW G 310 GS is based on a famous historical model from the BMW GS history – the R 100 GS. Accordingly, it is in black and yellow – with the basic colour cosmic black and yellow graphics on the tank side panels. Just in time for the anniversary, BMW Motorrad is also presenting a new rider equipment collection.

The Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) ensures a high level of driving safety by best possible traction as standard. With the new standard “Eco” riding mode the rider is encouraged to drive as efficiently as possible.

As optional equipment ex works, the new R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure can be equipped with the Pro riding modes option. With the new riding mode preselection, the rider can have an individual selection of riding modes provided at the riding mode button. The dynamic engine brake control is also a new component of the Pro riding modes. It can be used to safely avoid unstable driving conditions, which can occur in coasting overrun mode or when downshifting due to excessive brake slip at the rear wheel.

New BMW Integral ABS Pro as standard.

The R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure are the world’s most popular touring enduros, in their latest edition with BMW Integral ABS Pro as standard. This is a brake system that provides even more safety when braking, even in inclined positions, and thinks even further ahead, so to speak. The additional expansion of the riding mode concept results in more new functions. For example, the advanced adaptation of the ABS control characteristics to the respective riding mode.

Hill Start Control Pro (HSC Pro) with advanced function as optional equipment ex works.

The Hill Start Control drive-off assistant is standard in both models and enables convenient stopping and starting when driving uphill. Hill Start Control Pro (HSC Pro) goes beyond the Hill Start Control comfort system and noticeably improves the starting performance in all conditions.

New full-LED adaptive headlights, new lighting function, cruising light and function-integrated turn indicator bulbs as optional equipment ex works.

The standard full-LED headlight already illuminates the road with an unmatched bright and clear light. A newly developed headlight with swivel function goes one step further. With the optional “adaptive headlight” equipment, the low-beam headlight of the standard full-LED headlight is turned into the curve depending on the inclined position. Curves are almost fully illuminated this way because the light is where the motorcycle is moving.

The new lighting functions make the experience with the R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure even more intense and practical at the same time. In future, the welcome light (“Welcome” function), the “Good bye” function and the “Follow me home” function for orientation will be available as optional equipment. With the optional cruising light equipment, the two front turn indicator bulbs are operated so that they are permanently dimmed simultaneously. In the case of the multifunctional rear indicator lamps, the standard rear LED flashing turn indicators are replaced by LED flashing turn indicators (depending on the market), which can emit yellow flashing light and red brake light or rear light simultaneously.

Vehicle voltage and USB sockets as standard. Seat heating for rider and passenger for increased travelling and touring capability as well as handlebar risers by 30 mm as optional equipment ex works.

The new BMW R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure already have two different sockets as standard. A 12 V vehicle voltage socket and a USB-A socket with 5 V power supply. A seat heating for rider and passenger as optional equipment ex works also provides a significant increase in comfort at low outside temperatures. A new operating concept enables particularly easy handling. In addition to the different rider’s seats and footrests available as optional equipment or Original BMW Motorrad Accessories, the handlebar height can now also be adjusted with the optionally available handlebar risers.

Dunlop SportSmart TT chosen for BMW M 1000 RR

BMW Motorrad has unveiled the new M 1000 RR, the first M motorcycle from the manufacturer. It is based on the S 1000 RR and designed for riders who demand extreme, pure race-bred performance. BMW has chosen the Dunlop SportSmart TT for the road-legal version of the limited edition M 1000 RR. In a similar vein to the bike, the SportSmart TT offers race-derived technology in a tyre that’s equally at home on the street or the circuit.

Compared to the standard superbike, the M 1000 RR has additional competition-proven parts such as carbon fibre winglets and wheels. It is tuned to deliver 212 HP at a searing 14,500 RPM.

A race-inspired bike requires a race-inspired tyre. The SportSmart TT features the same NTEC RT technology as Dunlop’s Isle of Man TT winning tyres. This allows the rear pressure to be lowered for track use, enlarging the contact patch and maximising grip. A unique feature of the SportSmart TT is the Speed Vent Tread which has a tread groove pattern that opens and closes when the tyre turns. This creates a vent-like effect to improve heat dissipation.

Miguel Morais, Original Equipment Manager, Dunlop Moto Europe said: “We are proud that BMW has awarded Dunlop with an exclusive supply agreement for the first ever ‘M’ motorcycle. Every M 1000 RR will be fitted with SportSmart TT, which underlines and endorses the high performance and technology of the tyre.”

Winning in racing and in magazine tests

Dunlop has a proud history of success on track with the racing version of the S 1000 RR. The BMW Motorrad Team is within touching point of the lead of the FIM Endurance World Championship that concludes at Estoril this weekend. In the French Superbike Championship, Kenny Foray dominated the Ledenon races earlier this month on his Dunlop-shod BMW. On the roads, Peter Hickman has relied on the BMW and Dunlop combination to win the Isle of Man TT, the Macau Grand Prix and set the road racing lap record at the Ulster Grand Prix.

Magazine testers also rate the SportSmart TT as a winner. The UK Fast Bikes team rated the SportSmart TT as best superbike tyres in a ‘blind’ track test1 and it was awarded the accolade of ‘Best handling tyre’ by the German magazine ‘PS’ 2.

BMW Motorrad presents the M Endurance chain

Lubricating your chain was yesterday. Maintenance-free like the shaft drive for the first time.

For more than 90 years, the maintenance-free, environmentally friendly and comfortable shaft drive has been one of BMW Motorrad’s immovable technical cornerstones. With the M Endurance chain, BMW Motorrad now offers a maintenance-free chain with comparable characteristics for the first time.

Like previous X-ring chains, the M Endurance chain has a resident permanent lubricant filling between the rollers and pins, enclosed by X-rings. What is completely new, however, is that the previously necessary additional lubricant addition for the rollers and thus the familiar “chain lubrication” is no longer necessary, nor is any re-tensioning required from time to time due to the usual wear.

This enormous gain in comfort was made possible by using a new coating material for the rollers: tetrahedrally amorphous carbon (ta-C), also known as industrial diamond. This coating is characterized by extreme hardness and resistance and in this respect it is placed between the well-known DLC coating (Diamond Like Carbon) and pure diamond. In contrast to the metal surfaces used so far, the coating with the ta-C industrial diamond does not wear off. At the same time, this type of coating also offers a drastically reduced friction coefficient.

Thanks to excellent dry lubrication properties and the elimination of wear, the tetrahedral amorphous carbon coated rollers of the M Endurance chain offer maintenance comfort equivalent to that of a shaft drive motorcycle. This includes all the cleaning work that is unavoidable with a conventional chain due to splashed lubricant. Accordingly, the M Endurance chain also offers maximum environmental friendliness.

The M Endurance chain in 525 pitch is now available initially for the two 4-cylinder models BMW S 1000 RR and S 1000 XR. The M Endurance chain is available as accessory or directly from the factory as an option. Further BMW Motorrad models are being prepared for this feature.[wptb id=65242]

BMW Motorrad presents new custom bike: The Blechmann R 18

Bernhard Naumann, also known as Blechmann in the customizing scene, presents his version of the BMW R 18.

A strong character needs a strong name. “Blechmann” is a name as strong as metal. It is also the nickname of Bernhard Naumann, a renowned customizer from Austria. Together with BMW Motorrad he presents his latest creation: The Blechmann R 18.

With the new BMW R 18, BMW Motorrad presented the brand’s first series production bike for the cruiser segment in April 2020. Like no other BMW motorcycle before it, this model stands entirely in the tradition of historical BMW motorcycles – both technically and with regard to its design. It is based on illustrious models such as the BMW R 5 and shifts the focus back to the motorcycle essentials. Reason enough for Bernhard Naumann to change as little as possible on the frame and the technology and to use only the original mounting points for the creation of the Blechmann R 18.

The Blechmann R 18 in detail.
When starting off with a new creation, Bernhard Naumann never uses sketches in advance. He gathers his inspiration while working on the bike itself. “I draw my design directly on the object using the final material. This allows me to directly respond to the requirements and to keep an eye on the proportions at all times”, explains the designer.

For the Belchmann R 18, he initially “put the cart before the horse” in order to be able to correctly assess the proportions for the front fairing. The sporty single-seater is based on the original supporting structure of the rear fender, seat and pillion. The rear light is from Kellermann. The fuel tank has been extensively modified: For one thing, it is narrower making it sportier and exposes the engine even more. On the other hand, it features knee cut-outs, which further support the athletic line. The original steering tube was used as the basis for the stub handlebar.

Next, Blechmann customized the headlights. As with his last BMW custom bike “Giggerl”, a conversion of the BMW R nineT, the headlights were to have a subtle kidney-shaped design this time. Analogous to the classic boxer engine, Blechmann placed a filament lamp prominently in the center. Here, too, the steering angle and the forward-tilted headlamp determine the basic layout of the custom bike. Bernhard Neumann perfected his personalization efforts with discreet black paint and classic white BMW Motorrad pin-stripes. In total, the team around Blechmann worked 450 hours on his version of the BMW R 18.

Defining customizing.
Blechmann does not perceive his work to be that of a classic customizer. “My work begins by removing parts of the original version until a white canvas remains. As the construction progresses, the design develops. I call this ‘rapid-prototyping-Blechmann-style’ “, says the customizer. This is what makes his workshop unique.

Mostly, Blechmann works alone on his craftsmanship and designs. If necessary, he gets support from hand-picked professionals. “You can’t do anything in this world on your own. I am more than glad to have a reliable personnel infrastructure”.

Roland Sands’ personal story served as a source of inspiration for his work on this bike. “With an engine that’s so visibly the center piece, I immediately thought of muscle cars. My family has always been into going fast and my dad was a drag racer, so I thought it made sense to strip the bike down to the essentials and shape it to go fast on a straight track,” the designer explains.

The new BMW R 18: a cruiser rooted in history.
With the new R 18, BMW Motorrad presented the brand’s first series production bike for the cruiser segment in April 2020. Like no other
BMW motorcycle before it, this model stands entirely in the tradition of historical BMW motorcycles – both technically and with regard to its design. It is based on illustrious models such as the BMW R 5 and shifts the focus back to the motorcycle essentials: purist, no-frills technology and the boxer engine as the center of riding pleasure. The “Big Boxer” continues the line of traditional air-cooled boxer engines that have offered inspiring riding since BMW Motorrad first began production in 1923.

Roland Sands always starts by sketching his ideas on paper. This allows him to figure out the basics of the shape and what the stance and the geometry of the bike could look like. “In the end, the real magic happens when we bring the sketch to life”, Roland explains.

More than any other motorcycle, the new R 18 offers a highly customizable design. It features an easily removable rear frame and a simple-to-dismantle painted parts set. This gives the customer a high degree of freedom for easily converting the rear end of the new R 18 to suit personal preferences. In addition you can also change the paint finish to suit your personal taste. “The electronics were definitely the most difficult task we had to deal with as we put in nitrous oxide, stripped out the stock exhaust and changed the intake drastically. It was a bit of an experiment, but we dialed it in! The final product is impressive and characterised by a high level of craftsmanship, as can be expected from BMW Motorrad. Right from the beginning, I couldn’t wait to get customizing!” Roland points out.

For the the R 18 Dragster, the team around Roland Sands retained the stock neck geometry of the R 18, removed the bike’s rear end and turned it into a drag racer. Moreover, they chose to modify the front and rear fender to fit the modified frame. The whole customizing process took about three and a half months. The bike then headed to the workshop for final assembly and a day at a drag strip.

“Every bike needs different sources depending on the build, special materials or parts. Every new bike concept is a bit of a learning process even after having built over 200 bikes. We always want to understand the genre of the bike we are building in, it’s the key to keeping it authentic and functional,” explains Roland Sands.

Aside from the R 18 Dragster custom bike, Roland Sands also created two different design collections of milled aluminium parts for the launch of the R 18 Cruiser: “Machined” and “2-Tone-Black”. The “Machined” and “2-Tone-
Black” ranges include front and rear wheels available in different dimensions than the standard sizes. In addition, the range of these exclusive milled parts includes speedometer housings, handlebar clamps, risers, handlebar grips, hand levers and mirrors as well as engine housing trim elements, filler caps, intake silencer covers and much more.

For the R 18 Dragster, Roland Sands used the milled parts design collection “2-Tone-Black” to customize levers, wheels, valve covers, breast plate, headlight and gauges. The front end was taken from the BMW R nineT. The seat as well as the exhaust were created from scratch.

The R 18 Dragster custom bike in detail
1. The frame has been modified completely removing the rear suspension for drag racing.
2. Front and rear fenders have been slightly modified utilizing the stock sheet metal parts in order to keep the classic R 18 silhouette.
3. The headlight has been taken from the original R 18 and is highlighted with the headlight bezel from the design collection of milled aluminium parts.
4. The standard exhaust has been replaced with a hand fabricated Stainless Steel twin megaphone system utilizing the exhaust tips from the milled aluminium parts.
5. The hydraulic front brake and clutch master cylinders are from Roland Sands Design.
6. The tank has been taken over from the original R 18.
7. The paint finish is a two tone metallic blue with classic white BMW pinstripes by Roland’s long time painter Chris Wood.
8. The fork has been taken from the BMW R nineT.
9. The front braking system has been taken from the S 1000 RR superbike.
10. The seat has been built from scratch and is a RSD custom seat by Saddlemen.

Roland Sands: The man behind the designs
By his own account, Roland Sands basically grew up on a motorcycle and motorcycling is in his blood. His dad was a drag racer who built custom bikes and parts. As a result, Roland was brought up surrounded by cool bikes. It
wasn’t long before he, too, was riding dirt bikes, taking them apart and rebuilding them. He had a racing career of his own that spanned ten years.

Today Roland is a world famous designer of custom bikes and motorcycle apparel with customers in all corners of the world. The designer is best known for combining styles and creating new genres in the process. “Combining a racing aesthetic and function with a custom style – this is what we are probably best known for. We like to make stock machines
perform better,” says Roland.

For Roland Sands, motorcycling is not simply a job. “It’s really hard to describe in a few sentences. Riding a motorcycle to me is like becoming one with the machine. My motorcycle is my life, it’s everything, it’s what I do.”

BMW Motorrad presents the new BMW F 750 GS, BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure

For years, the core competencies of the renowned BMW Motorrad middle-class BMW F 750 GS, BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure models have been manifold: premium riding enjoyment thanks to reliable controllability on all roads, impressive engine power as well as extensive everyday-driving and touring capabilities – even when mere dirt roads lead to your destination. The BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure perfectly combine supreme road and touring suitability with outstanding offroad characteristics, while the more manageable dimensions of the BMW F 750 GS appeal to motorcyclists seeking an introduction to the world of touring enduros. Already a tried and tested concept, the F series is unveiling three variations here, fervently embraced by motorcycle enthusiasts in recent years and further refined by BMW Motorrad for model year 2021. All three models appear fresher and more dynamic thanks to new colour schemes and provide an even more intense GS experience with expanded standard equipment and new optional equipment.

General changes to the BMW F 750 GS, BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure include new tape designs and the respective style designation on the fairing side panels of the style variations. Furthermore, all models now have new LED flashing turn indicators as standard and a USB charging device at the front right of the cockpit. ABS Pro and DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) are now also standard, for even more braking and accelerating safety.

As before, the powerful, liquid-cooled 4-valve, 2-cylinder engine with 853 cc capacity, fuel injection and six-speed gearbox in all three models ensures vigorous propulsion. It is already designed to meet the future Euro 5 emission standard and thanks to two counterbalance shafts, delights with its smoothness, spontaneous response characteristics, impressive pulling power and low fuel consumption. In the BMW F 750 GS, as before, it generates 57 kW (77 hp) at 7,500 rpm and develops a maximum torque of 83 Nm at 6,000 rpm. The BMW F 850 GS and the BMW F 850 GS Adventure still generate 70 kW (95 hp) at 8,250 rpm and 92 Nm at 6,250 rpm.


The new BMW F 750 GS: In Light white, sports style or as “40 Years GS Edition”, and with expanded standard equipment.
The new BMW F 750 GS now steps up in the new basic Light white paintwork with tank centre cover painted in the vehicle colour. The black matt painted rims, black handlebars and seat bench in red/black make for a striking contrast.

The sports style in San Marino blue metallic is also new for the BMW F 750 GS. A tinted windscreen gives it a sporty touch.  In keeping with this, Granite grey metallic rims, silver handlebars as well as a black-grey seat bench and galvanised radiator cowl make a high-quality impression.

Conversely, the visually eye-catching BMW F 750 GS “40 Years GS Edition” with the “40 Years GS” logo on the fairing side panels is dedicated exclusively to the “40 Years GS” anniversary. Its yellow hand-protector bars and seat bench in black/yellow with GS logo unmistakeably invoke an icon from 40 years of GS history: The BMW R 100 GS. Black matt painted rims, silver handlebars and a galvanised radiator cowl round off this exclusive anniversary appearance.

The new BMW F 850 GS: In Racing red, Rallye style or as “40 Years GS Edition”, and with expanded standard equipment.
The new BMW F 850 GS comes in the new basic Racing red  paintwork with tank centre cover also painted in the vehicle colour. This contrasts with the black-coated fixed fork tubes, black rims and seat bench in black/grey.

In Rallye style and Racing blue metallic colour, the BMW F 850 GS together with the hand-protector bars, black fixed fork tubes and black-red seat bench emphasises its sporty character. The gold rims and galvanised radiator cowl accentuate its luxury feel.

The “40 Years GS Edition” of the BMW F 850 GS celebrates the 40th anniversary of the BMW GS models in Black storm metallic with “40 Years GS” logo on the fairing side panels. Exclusive yellow hand-protector bars, gold rims and a seat bench in black/yellow with GS logo also ensure a high level of recognition. Black fixed fork tubes and a galvanised radiator cowl are further hallmarks of this anniversary edition.

The standard equipment of the BMW F 850 GS has been further enhanced with a windscreen adjustment mechanism and a TFT display including convenient Connectivity functions.

The new BMW F 850 GS Adventure: In Ice grey, Rallye style or as “40 Years GS Edition” and with expanded standard equipment.
In the new basic Ice grey paintwork with tank centre cover painted in the vehicle colour, the new BMW F 850 GS Adventure fulfils your aspirations for adventure, offroad competence and touring capability. The black fixed fork tubes and rims and grey-black comfort seat blend in homogeneously and harmoniously.

The new BMW F 850 GS Adventure in Rallye style and Kalamata metallic matt paintwork signifies sporty talents and a sense of adventure. With its gold rims and fixed fork tubes, the new BMW F 850 GS Adventure appears both dynamic and exquisite at the same time. The sports windscreen and a black/grey upholstered Rallye seat with 890 mm seat height enhance the BMW F 850 GS Adventure’s sporty appearance.

The new BMW F 850 GS Adventure as “40 Years GS Edition” is also dedicated to the special anniversary of the BMW GS models. The “40 Years GS” logo and yellow hand-protector bars are distinctive hallmarks of the anniversary GS in Black storm metallic paintwork.  Black-coated fixed fork tubes, gold rims and a black/yellow upholstered seat bench for two with 860 mm seat height round off the BMW F 850 Adventure’s tribute to the GS family’s 40th anniversary. A TFT display including convenient Connectivity functions is now also standard onboard.

The new BMW F 750 GS, BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure all feature new components of the Pro riding modes optional equipment. Thus, as in the GS models with boxer engines, a reworked throttle response in DYNAMIC riding mode now ensures even more dynamics and driving enjoyment.

Furthermore, dynamic engine brake control and Dynamic Brake Control (DBC) now feature in Pro riding modes. Other new Pro riding mode features include the preselection of up to four riding modes for the button assignment on the right handlebar controls (though only in conjunction with the Connectivity optional equipment in the BMW F 750 GS).

An extra low seat bench as well as modified lowered suspension will be available as optional equipment for all three models in future ensuring even better ground accessibility when stationary.

Original BMW Motorrad Accessories now supply a holder for the BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure for mounting the BMW Motorrad Navigator above the standard TFT display, which is beneficial when the driver is stationary offroad . This holder was previously reserved exclusively for GS trophy machines and deployment vehicles. The ex works “Preparation for navigation device” optional equipment is still available for positioning on the handlebar clamp as before.

Since completely switching off the ABS will no longer be permissible under legal homolgation regulations in future, the Enduro and Enduro Pro riding modes provide suitably adapted controls for this purpose. The ABS function can still be switched off on the rear wheel in Enduro Pro riding mode (BMW F 850 GS and BMW F 850 GS Adventure only).

The HP logo will be omitted in future in all optional equipment scopes and Original BMW Motorrad Accessories.

The sports silencer for the BMW F 750 GS will only be provided via Original BMW Motorrad Accessories.
