A Motorcycle From The BBC TV Series ‘Father Brown’ is For Sale

A motorcycle from the BBC TV series ‘Father Brown’ is for sale with Silverstone Auctions.

Shuttleworth Motorcycle Sale July 30th

Once in a while an object from a TV series arrives on the auction market and creates a stir – that is exactly what is happening with this great 1954 BSA A10 Golden Flash featured in the BBC Father Brown episode ‘Wheels of Wrath’ starring Mark Williams. The TV series was loosely based on the Father Brown short stories by G. K. Chesterton.

1954 BSA A10 Golden Flash 646cc – £3,000 – £4,000

The Gold Flash was the first bike produced within the new BSA A10 model range and was in production from 1950 to 1963. Painted in gold for the USA market, hence the name, and black for the UK. It was capable of over 100mph and managed the standing quarter-mile in under 16 seconds.

Set in the 1950s, Father Brown’s character was a Roman Catholic priest based in the fictional village of Kembleford in the Cotswolds, who used his distinctive skills to solve various crimes.

In the episode ‘Wheels of Wrath’ a motorbike gang, the Ton Up’s arrive in Kembleford and one of the gang, Roger Norton, seems to be on a pilgrimage, lighting a candle in St Mary’s. When he is killed by barbed wire strung across the road Father Brown investigates, wishing to know why Roger Norton had lit a candle in church. With sergeant Goodfellow’s help he discovers that Turner and Norton were involved in the death of a young girl.

The bike is a charming reminder of a gentler time when skulduggery was something a village priest might become involved in solving. Presented in mostly original condition with great patina.

This motorcycle along with over 100 other bikes coming up for sale at Silverstone Auctions Shuttleworth Sale on 30th July, can be viewed online at www.silverstoneauctions.com . Here interested parties can also register to bid be it online, on the telephone, via a commission bid or live in the room on the day. Last Four MV’s From The Collection Owned By The Late Chairman of The Owners Club

Last four cherished MV Agustas from the motorbike collection owned by the late chairman of the MV Agusta Owners Club of Great Britain, Alan Elderton, leads Silverstone Auctions Shuttleworth Motorcycle Sale on July 30th.

This stunning £140,000 – £165,000 Collection includes a showpiece MV Agusta 750S featured in many magazines and a MV Agusta 125cc production racer which saw action with Norman Webb at the Isle of Man TT and the increasingly rare MV Agusta 600 Tourer.

SEE ALL DETAILS ON THE FOUR BIKES IN CATALOGUE NOTE LINKS BELOW

When speaking of MV Agustas superlatives are commonplace, but when viewing this collection of four beauties, put together by Alan Elderton, the late chairman of the MV Agusta Owners Club of Great Britain, including race and road bikes, one is almost lost for words. These uniquely stunning motorcycles, kept for the last 14 years by his widow Kaye, are the last and most cherished bikes of his incredible collection – each one is an important part of the Agusta story.

Mark Bryan of Silverstone Auctions, comments: “This collection provides true fans of the MV Agusta marque with an unrepeatable opportunity to own one of the best of their kind. Alan Elderton was an Agusta connoisseur and a distinguished figure in the Agusta world.”

This not to be missed quad of motorcycles – the Alan Elderton Collection, will be presented at The Silverstone Auctions Shuttleworth Sale, Old Warden Park, Bedfordshire, SG18 9EP on 30th July, with a viewing day on the 29th July. More details on the motorcycles can be found on the Silverstone Auctions website www.silverstoneauctions.com or by calling motorcycle specialist Mark Bryan on +44 (0) 07958 107974.

The Agusta brand is an Italian legend. MV Agusta produced their first prototype, called “98”, in 1945 and in 1948, the company built a 125cc two-stroke single to participate in the Italian Grand Prix in Monza. It won and this launched the legend. MV Agusta went on to dominate Grand Prix racing, winning 17 consecutive 500cc world championships. In 2008 Harley-Davidson bought MV Agusta for $109 million. When we talk speed MV Agusta is up there. The MV Agusta F4 1000 topped 186mph.

1998 Ducati 916 Carl Foggarty Replica 996cc – £70,000 -£80,000
The next Silverstone Auctions motorcycle sale at Shuttleworth is without a shadow of a doubt what you might call an Italian job – Italy’s best bikes lead the pack, three Ducatis all with just three push miles. The three bikes are part of a private collection and have been stored in an air-conditioned facility for last few years.

This number 001 Carl Foggarty replica, previously owned by Ducati, was on display in their Bologna museum, Number 001 of the 202 built, Carl Foggarty was given 002! The Senna-inspired 916 introduced after his death in 1994 with profits going to the Insituto Ayrton Senna charity. ” Of all the Senna-badged Ducatis, the first edition 916 Senna is the most collectable,” says Mark Bryan, Motorcycle Manager at Silverstone Auctions.

This unregistered, unused bike is number 042 of only 300 made and showing just three ‘push’ miles. Complete with its original cover, paddock stand, both keys and book pack it is a great piece of Ducati and Senna collectable history, guided at £40,000 – £50,000.

2012 Ducati Panigale 1199S Tricolore 1199cc £15,000 – £20,000

The odometer displayed just 100 miles and it was owned and kept as a display piece for the last year and only used on occasion. The bike was presented as ready-to-go for its next owner.

One of just six survivors, Super rare pre-production 1977 Honda CBX

Collectors item: One of just six survivors, Super rare pre-production ‘Sandcast engine’, 1977 Honda CBX £25,000 – £35,000 – ready to go at Silverstone Auctions at Devitt MCN Festival, May 14, East of England Arena, Peterborough.

This remarkable piece of motorcycle history, hand built by Honda in 1977 with a rare sandcast engine, made prior to the launch of the then new CBX model with matching engine and frame numbers comes to the market for an estimate of £25,000 to £35,000 with Silverstone Auctions on May 14. The lucky bidder who wins this bike will have a showpiece for their collection.

Mark Bryan of Silverstone Auctions Bike Division, says: “I’ve been involved with pre-production bikes in the past and they always attract the interest of serious collectors, but this CBX example is probably the rarest I’ve dealt with.”

In 1978 Bike Magazine summed this beautiful machine up when it wrote: “The CBX was quite simply a marvellous revelation which has genuinely elevated the status of motorcycling. Few people will be able to afford to run one, but then the best is never cheap. Above all, such a motorcycle should not be condemned because it’s an excess.”

Some 41 examples were scheduled to be built, actual numbers vary as not all were assembled and only six examples are known to still exist with most of these being in either museums or private hands all over the world.

The engines on the pre-production models were “sandcast” development units and never meant to fall into private hands. Just three of the “sandcast” engines survived, two belong to Honda and the other remains in this bike.

This example was originally sent to Belgium for promotional and development reasons and remained there up until recently. Now UK registered and sympathetically restored to running order and fitted now with its correct 240kph speedo.

Complete with Honda dating letter and certificate of authenticity, this is a super rare piece of Honda history and a must for any serious Honda collector.

Weighing around 550lbs and with 105bhp on tap, the CBX was good for over 130mph and did the standing quarter-mile in around 12 seconds. Its performance and its sheer ‘presence’ on the road makes it a head turner wherever it goes. Few bikes can match it for charisma, design appeal and, above all, that sound!

This motorcycle, along with over 140 other bikes will be coming up for auction at the Devitt MCN Festival of Motorcycling Sale at the East of England Arena, Peterborough on the 14th May. You can view all the motorcycles at this sale online at www.silverstoneauctions.com or in person at the show on the auctions viewing day on Saturday 13th May. Now is the time to register to bid, which can also be done online. Norton Motorcycles honours Beatrice Shilling

Norton Motorcycles honours Beatrice Shilling with 1938 Norton International at opening of Coventry University building.

Norton Motorcycles has presented its heritage collection 1938 Norton International at the official opening of the Coventry University’s Beatrice Shilling Building.

A pioneering mechanical engineer in both the fields of motorsport and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in 1934, Beatrice Shilling became one of three women to win the Gold Star at the Brooklands circuit, completing a lap with an average speed of 101mph on her very own Norton M30 500cc.

In her honour, Coventry University has named its new Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Computing building after the famous engineer and motorcycle racer.

The official opening of the building was delayed due to COVID and rescheduled for 8th March on International Women’s Day, as well as what would have been Beatrice’s 114th birthday, and so the celebration of Shilling’s accomplishments within STEM and motorsport is timely.

For the event and to recognise the significance of Shilling’s contributions, Norton presented its 1938 Norton International – a close relation to the Norton M30 – from the heritage collection that usually resides within the foyer of the company’s Solihull headquarters.

The celebration welcomed as special guests Beatrice Shilling’s great-niece Jo Denbury and her daughter Saskia Preston, as well as Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, Co-founder and CEO of Stemettes, the award-winning social enterprise focussed on inspiring and supporting girls, young women and non-binary young people in STEM.

A woman in a man’s world: Life of Beatrice Shilling

1909 – Beatrice Shilling was born in Waterlooville, Hampshire.

1923 – At age 14, Beatrice reportedly bought her first motorcycle quickly learning to strip and rebuild its engine to improve the bike’s performance.

1929 – Having worked on motorcycles throughout her youth, Shilling was keen to pursue this passion and went on to study electrical engineering at The University of Manchester.

1932 – After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, Beatrice stayed on for a further year gaining a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

1934 – A competitive motorcycle racer, Beatrice became one of only three women to win the Gold Star at the Brooklands circuit, finishing a lap with an average speed of over 100mph on her Norton M30 500cc. This was the fastest lap ever to be achieved in her time.

1936 – Unafraid to compete in a male-dominated industry, Beatrice was recruited to the Royal Aircraft Establishment (R.A.E.), writing manuals for aeroplane engines.

1939 – Three years later and Beatrice is promoted to Technical Officer, charged with carburettor research and development. It was at this point, World War II broke out and Beatrice’s expertise became crucial to the war effort. Working closely on the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine used in the Spitfire and Hurricane, Beatrice developed the R.A.E. restrictor to prevent the aeroplane engines from becoming flooded with fuel when entering a steep dive.

1949 – Beatrice was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King George VI.

1956 – Beatrice joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and was elected as an Associate Member. This was in addition to her long-standing membership of the Women’s Engineering Society.

1959 – Following World War II, she turned to racing cars with her husband George, including at Goodwood Members’ Meetings where they scored several high-placed results.

1969 – After retiring, Beatrice received an honorary doctorate from the University of Surrey.

1990 – Beatrice Shilling passed away at the age of 81 leaving a legacy of exceptional contribution to engineering and motor racing.

Production of the V4SV has been integrated into an increasingly packed order book which includes the new Commando 961 SP and CR, as well as Commando Classics for historic NMUL customers.

The delivery programme marks an important milestone in the brand’s commitment to producing the highest quality, luxury motorcycles.

Dr. Robert Hentschel, CEO of Norton Motorcycles, said: “We’ve commenced the delivery programme of both V4SV while also filling the order book for our new Commando variants, which will be available across a growing dealer partner network.”

“This expansion plan is an exciting chapter in the Norton story, given it’s come in our 125th year I feel that Norton is in a fantastic position. It has taken a huge effort from the team at Norton to get here and I’m proud of the entire company. I’d also like to extend my thanks to the customers that have waited patiently for us to get to the stage that we’re at.”

Uncompromising quality – about the re-engineered V4SV*
Available in two colour options, Carbon and Manx Silver, the V4SV features carbon fibre body work, a TIG-welded aluminium tube frame handcrafted and polished to a mirror finish, and a Union Jack on the tail of the motorcycle.

Each model is powered by Norton’s own liquid-cooled 1,200cc, 72-degree V4 engine, and optimised to produce 185bhp at 12,500rpm and 125Nm of torque at 9,000rpm.

The superbike’s design includes an aerospace-grade aluminium chassis, a full quick shift and auto blipper system, adjustable front and rear suspension, Brembo disc brakes, a sophisticated lean-angle sensitive traction-control and three engine modes (wet, road and sport).

Also fitted is a full-colour six-inch TFT display, which includes rear-view camera functionality and an under-seat carbon fibre 15-litre fuel.

Prices for the V4SV start from £44,000.

One of the Greatest Bike Racers, Ron Haslam’s Kit Bike Gift From Cagiva

One of the greatest Bike Racers, Ron Haslam’s Kit Bike gift from Cagiva sold to fund his son, Leon’s early racing career is now for sale with Silverstone Auctions at the

MCN London Motorcycle Show Feb 18th

This Ducati 851S Kit bike was presented to Ron Haslam in 1989 by Cagiva. It is estimated to sell for £40,000 – £50,000. The 851S ‘Kit bike’ represented the advent of the 4-valve, liquid-cooled, fuel injected race bikes from the late 1980s.

Ronald Haslam (born 22 June 1956) is an English former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer who had been racing for over thirty years, winning two World titles, four British championships and having ridden in almost 110 GPs.  He earned a reputation as one of the greatest riders in the history of the Isle of Man TT, one of the most dangerous and difficult races in the world, and it is considered the ultimate test for any motorcycle rider.

One bike was given to each the 1990 Cagiva ‘Works’ riders Ron Haslam, Randy Mamola and Marco Lucchinelli.

This bike has never been used and is in original and unrestored condition. It comes complete with all the original bagged-up spares including exhausts, gaskets, valves, spark plugs. Other original items included are a workshop manual, factory bulletins, parts list and factory paddock stand. Paperwork included includes Customs & Excise 386 form made out to Ron Haslam for the outstanding VAT paid on import. It is not UK-registered and will require some recommissioning before use.

This 1988 Ducati 851S Kit Bike Tricolore 888cc bike represents a great opportunity to own an important part of UK motorcycle racing history.

Mark Bryan, Motorcycle Manager, Silverstone Auctions, comments: “On the open market for the first time in a long time, this bike represents a fabulous opportunity to invest in one the first Super Bikes that Ducati built with its great Ron Haslam provenance.”

1936 Indian Four – £50,000 – £60,000 with H&H Classics

A very rare survivor – a 1936 Indian Four – £50,000 – £60,000 with H&H Classics on March 29th at the National Motorcycle Museum.

For those of us who simply love the design and ethos of the Indian motorcycle this Indian Four offers a rare opportunity to fulfil a dream when it comes to sale with H&H Classics at the National Motorcycle Museum on March 29th.

Mike Davis, who heads the H&H Bike Department, says: “It was purchased by the vendor as a project and sympathetically restored, retaining the 1980s paint. It is a rare survivor today in the UK and comes complete with a current V5C and other paperwork. We have been advised it is running well.”

Indian were at the forefront of motorcycle design during the pioneer years, introducing many innovations including sprung frames and electrical lighting systems at a time when their rivals were still employing designs not far removed from those found in the contemporary cycle industry. In 1911 they secured the first three places in the Senior TT, on the Isle of Man, with machines equipped with countershaft gearboxes and chain drive.

Throughout the 1920s and early 1930s, Indian continued to offer innovative solutions and adapted to the change in the North American marketplace that saw the motorcycle as transport threatened by the advent of affordable, mass-produced motorcars such as the Ford Model T, successfully transforming their products into “lifestyle” accessories, long before the concept had been invented. Although they produced successful single-cylinder models, influenced by the sporting machines produced in the UK, the Springfield factory was best known for their large capacity V-twins and the illustrious line of four-cylinder machines.

The Indian Four’s origins lay not in Springfield, but instead in Philadelphia, where following the sale of the Henderson four-cylinder design to the Schwinn company, William, or Bill Henderson established a new company, the ACE Motor Corporation, to produce a range of inlet over exhaust, inline-four cylinders ranging in capacity between 1168cc and 1266cc. The ACE company survived until 1927, despite the loss of its founder in 1922 when he was killed testing a new model, however, the deteriorating economic climate resulted in the ACE marque being purchased by Indian. The Indian fours continued to be marketed under the ACE brand until 1929 when they became the Indian Four. By the early 1930s the Indian 4 was well-integrated into the existing range, sharing features such as the leaf-sprung fork with their Vee-twin-powered siblings.

Classic Dirt Bike Show Hosts Four Decades Of Stunning Bikes

An eclectic mix of title-winning bikes covering four decades will be displayed at The Classic Dirt Bike Show sponsored by Hagon Shocks on February 11-12.

Representing the 1950s is Jeff Smith’s 1953 BSA Gold Star on which he won the 1955 Scottish Six Days Trial. The machine is very easily recognisable – the BSA factory competition department drilled hundreds of different sized holes in it, giving the bike its name: Smith’s Woodpecker Goldie. Jeff won the 1954 Victory Trial on this bike in a rigid format before changing to swinging arm mode in mid-1954, after which he won many trade-supported nationals in 1955.

The 1960s is represented by another famous BSA on which Scott Ellis, the Studley Midlands engineer, somewhat surprisingly won the 1965 British Experts Trial in one of the hardest ever UK trials events. Battered by snow and bitterly cold winds, Scott beat Sammy Miller by two points – 64 to 66 – in a winter Birmingham MCC thriller. Scott’s machine was highly modified, not having the usual engine cradle, having oil in the frame and a special light alloy cylinder. The cream of Britain’s trials riders had to play second fiddle to the 24-year-old who secured his triumph at the infamous and previously unconquered Bongham Alley sections in Wales. Tackling the bike’s reconstruction is the experienced Colin Dommett. It’s been stripped entirely since 1971 and will be displayed for the first time ever at next month’s show at Telford International Centre, which Colin and Scott both plan to attend.

In the 1970s, ‘Magical’ Mick Andrews was truly the Monarch of the Glen, winning the Scottish Six Days on five occasions. French super-enthusiast, Olivier Barjon, will take Mick’s famous ‘cantilever’ 1974 Scottish winning Yamaha to the show. It was the first time that a cantilever or monoshock machine had won a major event. Mick hasn’t seen the bike for 39 years and will attend the show for a nostalgic look at his old steed, which has been impounded in the French Yamaha importer Sonauto’s headquarters for most of that time. Mick won the 1974 event, beating trials supremo Malcolm Rathmell into second place.

In the 1980s, Telford guest Dave Thorpe was the king, winning the Motocross World Title three times in 1984, 86 and 89. He also took eight British Championships and the World Veterans crown. All his world titles were on a Honda machine, and two of them are still in the UK so Dave hopes to secure the 1986 bike to display at the show. Dave’s first two titles were gained in dramatic fashion at the Wohlen circuit in Switzerland each time from Belgian superstar Andrew Malherbe. For the title chase in 1989, the much-missed Eric Geboers was forced to play second fiddle to the powerful Brit. Since retirement, Dave has secured major success as the UK team manager for the 1994 Motocross Nations, guiding the British team to its first success for decades. These days, Dave works in an ambassadorial/promotional role for Honda, while also running Honda’s off-road training at all levels. He also still finds time to run the Honda factory’s World Motocross team. Thorpe’s career highs and lows will be revealed to visitors as commentator John McCrink quizzes the motocross star when they take to the stage at Telford.

The Ducati 996 followed on from the glorious 916 before being replaced by the much loved 998. Ducati have produced motorcycles that leave a distinguished legacy. They are as much loved and sought after now as they were when they first appeared. The Ducati 996 played a big part in the marque’s story.

Rowan Huntley of Silverstone Auctions, comments: “This is an exceptional opportunity to own a completely unused 996, still on its original tyres with only delivery miles. It is truly amazing how this bike has been kept unused since 2000. Finding low mileage bikes always surprises me, this being no exception as it looks like its been ridden straight out of a time machine.”

Maria Costello Silverstone Auctions Motorcycle Ambassador

Maria Costello Goodwood Festival of Speed 2019

Bravery on a bike: Silverstone Auctions logo is flying alongside Maria Costello the company’s motorcycle ambassador

Maria Costello MBE, Motorcycle Ambassador to Silverstone Auctions, is being sponsored by the auction house for her for her 2022 race season. The Silverstone logo will appear on her bike and her sidecar.

Nick Whale, Chairman of Silverstone Auctions says: “We are delighted to have Maria as our Motorcycle Ambassador, as she is a legend, a remarkable woman who has carved a place for herself in a sport still largely dominated by men. She is leading the way and opening the door for many more women to enter the sport. And she is doing it with such style!”

The British racer from Spratton in Northamptonshire held the Guiness World Record for “Fastest Woman To Lap the Isle of Man TT Course. She got that by clocking an average speed of 114.73 miles per hour. She was also the first woman to take the podium at the Manx Grand Prix at Isle of Man and she races vintage and side car.

In November of 2009, Costello was presented with an MBE—’Member of the Order of the British Empire’—for her ‘services to motorcycling. Costello described receiving the honour as, “a good moment for the sport, and for women in motorcycling,” and added that, “it was special for my family too – they’d been wondering what on earth I had been playing at all these years!” This November she’ll be handed the ‘chain of office’ at the TTRA’s annual luncheon in Birmingham.

Off the track, Costello has also done much to encourage women in the sport. She started Woman on a Motorcycle, one of the first Facebook groups that encouraged fellow female riders to swap stories and gear, make plans to ride together, and organize all-female track days. Additionally, Costello was invited to join the Commission for Women in Motorcycling, a branch of FIM—the Federation of International Motorcycling.

Norton Motorcycles Purchases 55 Classic Motorcycles To Start Heritage Collection

Norton Motorcycles has purchased 55 classic Norton bikes to start its heritage collection.

The collection, which spans from 1916 to 1992, boasts some of the rarest Norton bikes and sidecars ever produced including models such as Model 1 ‘Big four’, the company founder James “Pa” Norton’s favourite bike, and a rare speedway from 1930.

1921 Model 1

A 1968 Norton Atlas Police motorcycle used for Royal Family escorts, which previously rode alongside the Queen, the Queen Mother and Prince Charles is another notable bike that has been acquired.

Norton bought the bikes from single collector, Ian Loram, who has amassed the unique collection since his first classic purchase in the late 90’s.

A small selection of bikes will initially take pride of place in the reception area of the recently opened Norton HQ in Solihull, with bike fans likely to be able to get a glimpse of them in person later in the year.

1929 CJ350

“It is highly unusual for any major manufacturer to have the chance to purchase such a large, high quality, collection that represents the history of your brand, all in one go,” said Robert Hentschel, CEO of Norton Motorcycles.

“When the opportunity arose through Ian, we jumped at the chance to buy the collection and bring 55 classic motorcycles home.

“Norton has a near 125-year history that is unrivalled in the motorcycle world – and one we want to celebrate now and in the future. While it’s a hugely exciting time for us looking ahead with the recent opening of a new factory, an exciting product road map and the £100 million investment from TVS, it’s vital that we continue to celebrate the great products of our past because they will impact and steer our future.”

1929 JE350

Ian Loram added: “I started collecting Norton Motorcycles in the late 90’s and would take every approach to not miss an opportunity to buy a rare Norton on sale. So many of the bikes hold a very special memory but it’s now a collection for the headquarters to enjoy.

“James “Pa” Norton always strived to innovate and having my facility tour during the handover of the collection, I was filled with a wonderful sense that Pa would be very proud of what is being done in his name.”

1930 DT Speedway

Seven rare Norton’s to get excited about

  1. The newly purchased line-up contains the 1921 Model 1. This was a favourite of Norton founder, James “Pa” Norton, who rode a 633cc Big Four combination 3,000 miles across Africa in 1921.
  2. Just one of 53 built by Norton for speedway racing, the 1930 DT with a 500cc twin port and ¾ gallon fuel tank. Norton loaned several DT’s to established riders. This precise model was loaned to Oliver Langton for speedway racing.
  3. The road-going version 1990 Norton F1 Rotary, based on the RCW588 racing motorcycle.
  4. Adding to the collection includes the 1929 CJ350 designed by Walter Moore, which saw under 200 models produced.
  5. Norton’s historic DNA is renowned for featherbed frames, used on numerous models by Norton for close to 20 years. The collection features British racing motorcycles, such as the 1950 Norton Manx on a featherbed frame and style modification for racing.
  6. With only six remaining in the world, the extremely rare saddle tank racing styled 1929 JE350.
  7. A fully restored 500cc 1938 Clubman International.

Stafford Bike Show Takes Podium Position With World Exclusives!

THOUSANDS OF showgoers, including a Hollywood star, were out in the post-lockdown sunshine at the Stafford County Showground over the weekend of April 23 – 24 to celebrate all things motorbikes… and there was plenty to celebrate.

The International Classic MotorCycle Show always has loads to see and do, and this year was no different as the crowds packed in to see bikes, club stands, trade stands, world exclusives, book launches, live trails, firing-up area, Bonhams’ auction, the competition hall… and more special guests than you could shake a stick at!

Perhaps the most notable display was the world exclusive Mike Hailwood exhibit, featuring never-before-seen family memorabilia of the former champion. Guests were able to view these heirlooms, from his 1978 TT winner’s Dunlop cap through to his George Medal, awarded when Mike rescued Clay Regazzoni from his burning BRM at the South African Formula 1 GP. Talking of awards and winners, the class of 1978, which consisted of Alex George, Ian Richards, Phil Read and Chas Mortimer, were on stage across the weekend giving first-hand accounts of their racing careers and inside stories into the motorbike racing scene.

The Bonhams Auction was particularly nail biting with a very special ex-Reg Barton, Dick Knight, 1929 Brough Superior 996cc SS100 Alpine Grand Sport Sprint Special which sold for a staggering £220,000! And showgoers might also have even seen an A-list celebrity or two. Jason Momoa, best known as DC superhero Aquaman, was also there. Being a keen motorcycle enthusiast, Jason perused the show and examined the lots in the Bonhams Auction.

Event organiser Nick Mowbray said: “It was a brilliant weekend! We have received marvellous feedback from visitors and traders alike. The addition of the Hailwood display and the ‘Class of 78’ added something very special to a tried-and-tested format.”
