Kawasaki to be First Japanese Motorcycle Manufacturer to Include Bosch’s Advanced Rider Assistance System

Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd has announced that the advanced rider assistance system developed by the Bosch company is to be included in future Kawasaki motorcycles – a first for a Japanese motorcycle manufacturer.

Bosch’s Advanced Rider Assistance System is composed of three elements: ACC (adaptive cruise control), forward collision warning and blind spot protection. These form a comprehensive system for motorcycle safety and feature the same ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) technology used in automobiles. The underlying technology in this cutting-edge system is Bosch’s radar sensor, brake system, engine management system and HMI (human machine interface), which all work together to boost safety and comfort for motorcycle riders.

In-house accident research by Bosch has shown that advanced rider assistance systems can prevent one in seven motorcycle accidents. This is thanks to the assistance system’s electronics constantly monitoring the motorcycle’s surroundings and responding to potentially dangerous situations faster than humans can react.

Kawasaki has strived toward the goal of being “Fun and Rewarding to Control” with rider safety and comfort at the forefront, through the development and use of rider support systems such as KTRC (Kawasaki TRaction Control) and KIBS (Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System). With the adoption of this Bosch system, the aim is to offer even more riders the ability to enjoy Kawasaki motorcycles in a safe way.

Geoff Liersch, President of the Bosch Two-Wheeler and Powersports Business Unit said, “Bosch continues to make riding safer, more efficient and fun around the world, and we are honored to supply Kawasaki as first Japanese manufacturer, with the complete advanced rider assistance systems.”

Yuji Horiuchi, President of the Motorcycle & Engine Company in Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd., commented, “We are glad to announce that our motorcycle will be equipped with Bosch’s advanced rider assistance systems, which gives more safety and comfort to riders. With the support of these systems, we are confident that Kawasaki can offer “Fun and Rewarding to Control” to even more riders.”

Advanced Rider Assistance System features

  1. ACC (adaptive cruise control)
Riding in heavy traffic and maintaining the correct following distance to the car in front takes a great deal of concentration and can be strenuous for the rider. ACC adjusts the vehicle speed to the flow of traffic and maintains the necessary safe following distance. This can be effective in preventing rear-end collisions caused by insufficient distance to the vehicle in front. And not only does ACC offer riders more convenience, it also allows them to concentrate more on the road, particularly in high-density traffic.
  2. Forward collision warning
Bosch has developed a collision warning function for motorcycles to reduce the risk of rear-end collisions and to mitigate the potential consequences. If the system detects that another vehicle is dangerously close and the rider does not react to the situation, it warns the rider by way of an acoustic or optical signal.
  3. Blind-spot detection
A radar sensor monitors the motorcycle’s surroundings and assists the rider in changing lanes safely. The system checks if there are any objects in areas that are typically difficult for the rider to see, and whenever there is a vehicle in the rider’s blind spot, the technology warns them by way of an optical signal – for example, in the rear-view mirror.

Editor’s Note: No date has yet been set for the introduction of the ADAS system on Kawasaki machines or, as yet, which machines it will be featured on.

Electric powered bike unveiled by Kawasaki

The annual EICMA show in Milan witnessed a media event hosted by Kawasaki at which six new machines for the 2020 model year were highlighted by Yuji Horiuchi – President of Kawasaki Heavy Industries Motorcycle & Engine Company. In addition, Mr Horiuchi unveiled an Electric Vehicle (EV) concept and explained its background.

Revealing that Kawasaki had been conducting EV research for many years, Mr Horiuchi noted that KHI research had so far been based on a mid-capacity style machine with more “rider features” than current EV machines in the market. Possessing the equivalent of 20kw for acceleration on demand and a cruising output akin to 10kw, the EV project has been tested extensively at the Kawasaki owned Autopolis track in southern Japan as well as in real life urban environments.

He continued; “We have focused on the riding sensation during road testing combining an electric power source – which enables high level of flexibility in torque and power delivery – with gear-shifting capability.

The result is a machine delivering good rider feeling in line with our overall mission of Rideology”.
A compact machine with a size similar to a Ninja 650, the EV bike uses familiar middle-weight Kawasaki road bike suspension and brakes plus the same trellis type chassis technology as used on many Ninja and Z family machines.

At the core of the 219kg vehicle is a battery pack rechargeable via a quick CHAdeMo style charging system or a conventional 100-240V domestic supply. In this way the EV machine follows current convention but the Kawasaki “fun to ride” Rideology approach dictated further thinking.

The result is an electric powered two-wheeler with a range of approximately 100km with attributes from a conventional machine such as a clutch and four speed gearbox. In this way it would be expected for the vehicle to be attractive to the current profile of Kawasaki owner and to fulfil Kawasaki’s Rideology philosophy.

Mooted as simply a research project, KHI has stated clearly that there are no plans to add an EV bike to its range in the near future. However, Mr Horiuchi did conclude by intriguing media guests at the press conference with a promise that Kawasaki: “..are finding many more avenues to explore to expand the excitement of control on two wheels.”

Z900 becomes a screen star for 2020 season

Updated for 2020, the Z900 maintains the “Exciting and Easy” concept of its predecessor, while offering the next step in aggressive Z Sugomi styling.

A host of advanced new features appear including integrated Riding Modes (combining newly added KTRC and Power modes), new TFT colour instrument screen, Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, all-LED lighting and cleaner emissions.

Consistently at the head of the field in its capacity class of the naked sector, the Z900 is available in two versions for 2020, a full power machine rated at 125PS (92.2 kW) and an A2 specification model with 95PS (70kW) available.

At the core of Kawasaki’s Z offering, the Z900 has been a consistently strong seller within Europe where the naked bike market has grown each year to become one of the dominating style sectors.

Into this hotly contested environment the Z900 for 2020 is well prepared for the fight with the addition of Kawasaki’s highly praised KTRC traction control and the ability to select from four different rider modes and two power modes.

This rider-centric approach extends to the cockpit area where a 10.9cm multi-function TFT meter screen appears for the first time displaying all the essential rider information plus allowing the rider to interrogate certain reporting functions of the machine using a Bluetooth connection via the unique Kawasaki Rideology App for smartphones.

Functions that can be seen on the smartphone screen when connected via Bluetooth include vehicle information such as remaining fuel, distance covered and maintenance schedule. General settings such as preferred units and date format can be adjusted via Smartphone while the TFT screen itself can also show – with an icon – if a telephone call or email has been received. Need power for the phone or other devices? An under seat USB power socket is just one of the many Kawasaki Genuine Accessory items available for the latest Z900.

Making sure the Z900 tracks in the right direction, the new original equipment tyre is now the much praised Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 and turning darkness into light, the Z900 is equipped with an LED head and tail lamp plus licence plate light and indicators.

Both versions of the Z900 (full power and A2) will be available in the same new colour options in 2020. Those being metallic graphite gray / metallic spark black plus candy lime green / metallic spark black and pearl blizzard white / metallic spark black with the fourth option of metallic spark black / metallic flat spark black.

Like other machines destined for the 2020 Kawasaki range, the Z900 core virtues are maintained and enhanced to create two machines with the same essential personality just larger and even more refined.

Feature packed Z650 for 2020

As innovators and leaders in the ever-growing naked bike class, Kawasaki have not rested on their success and the new Z650 represents a fresh iteration of a justifiably popular middle-weight model.

Crafted using Kawasaki’s unique Sugomi philosophy – that matches each engineering plus with a styling plus – the Z650 sits proudly in a Z class that extends from 125cc all the way to 1000cc. And ever since its launch for the 2017 season, the muscular looking Z650 has delighted riders in the middle weight class with its no-nonsense  looks allied to a fun and easy riding experience that rewards time served riders as much as those who have only recently been drawn to two wheels.

Designed with the A2 licence category in mind, the Z650 with its narrow chassis profile and willing, predictable engine is either a great stepping stone towards a larger Z model or – for many – all the motorcycle they will ever want or need.

Engine flexibility from tick-over to the red line and urban manoeuvrability are just two of the Z650’s recognised strong points, the confidence inspiring twin is also an ideal out of town and weekend thrills machine either solo or with a passenger who will additionally benefit from a revised and comfier rear seat.

For 2020, the Z takes a giant stride forwards with the fitment of a stunning multi-function colour TFT meter with a 10.9cm screen replacing the previous meters with such items as gear position indicator, shift lamp, fuel gauge and Economical Riding Indicator plus other innovations including Bluetooth Smartphone connectivity. Additionally there’s now LED lighting front and rear plus Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 tyres fitted as standard.

Z means style and fashion so no surprise that the Z650 now has the ability to connect to the riders’ smartphone for the new season. Pairing via Bluetooth is simple and, via Kawasaki’s own Rideology App, functions such as GPS route information and scheduled service information can be accessed in addition to all the normal notifications.

Taking things in the braking and comfort departments to the next level, the 2020 Z650 has a new spec rear seat with deeper and wider padding allowing even greater distances to be covered with a passenger in confidence and comfort.

The visible trellis type chassis of the Z650 remains unchanged with its angular bodywork magnifying the purposeful looks that have made it such a sales hit.  And a new look demands new colours so three options will be available in 2020. Candy lime green / metallic spark black is bound to be popular while metallic spark black on its own is going to be a default for a certain type of rider. Finally pearl blizzard white / metallic spark black is the third and final of three great Z650 options.

2020 Ninja 1000SX – The Best of Both Worlds

The 2020 Ninja 1000SX marks the fourth generation of a successful sport touring platform.  Cleaner emissions with the same great performance, sportier, more dynamic new styling, a single-sided muffler and all-LED lighting feature on the new spec list. Sport and Touring capability; the 2020 Ninja 1000SX truly offers the Best of Both Worlds.

Increased seat comfort for both rider and passenger is just one of the modifications that also include the debut of Electronic Cruise Control, a Quick Shifter, integrated Riding Modes combining KTRC and Power Modes and 10.9cm all-digital TFT colour instrumentation with smartphone connectivity – making this refined Sport Tourer more attractive than ever.

The new styling accentuates the new all LED lights including head and tail lights plus licence plate light and indicators while grip is delivered via Dunlop Roadsport Sportmax 2 tyres.

Ergonomically thicker, wider rider and passenger seats deliver increased comfort, facilitating longer hours in the saddle with the rear seat cushion being wider, it offers a greater surface area. Couple this with a new design of screen adjustable in no less than four positions – plus the option of a larger accessory screen – and distance riding is enhanced further still for the coming year.

Rider aids that previously included an electronic cornering management function plus intelligent anti-lock braking are augmented by four selectable rider mode options.

For further convenience, a Bluetooth chip built into the instrument panel enables riders to connect to their motorcycle wirelessly.  Using Kawasaki’s Rideology smartphone application a number of instrument functions can be accessed, contributing to an enhanced motorcycling experience.

Functions include vehicle information such as remaining fuel, distance covered and maintenance schedule. General settings such as preferred units and date format can be adjusted via Smartphone while the TFT screen itself can also show – via an icon – if a telephone call or email has been received by the smartphone plus the screen brightness automatically switches between three rider-set levels to suit the available light.

An up and down quick shifter is standard equipment in 2020 while twin silencers make way for a single sporty silencer mounted on the right hand side. Dynamic sport riding is enhanced by the adoption of Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S22 tyres while the overall look becomes more sporting with numerous subtle changes to the styling including a new front mudguard.

Touring fans can be reassured that the innovative clean mount accessory pannier system continues for 2020 plus the option of accessory heated handlebar grips and even an under seat USB port as part of a long line of practical and sporty genuine accessory items.

Three new colours appear for the new season, metallic graphite gray / metallic diablo black sits alongside emerald blazed green / metallic carbon gray / metallic graphite grey and pearl blizzard white / metallic carbon gray / metallic spark black.

Sport or Tour, the Ninja 1000SX is more defined, more dynamic and more desirable for the new season and offers ‘The best of Both Worlds’.

New Kawasaki Z H2 marks a new era in the Hypernaked class

Stretching back in an unbroken series of models over nearly fifty years to the iconic and ground-breaking Super Four model Z1 of 1972, Kawasaki has an enviable Z heritage in the naked class.

Kawasaki is not looking back with its latest top level Z though. Instead, it encourages riders and fans to look to the future and anticipate meeting the most radical, most technically advanced and most powerful Z ever; the Z H2. Harnessing Kawasaki’s considerable in-house experience with the Ninja H2 and Ninja H2R, the Z H2 forces the world of motorcycling in a new direction with the ultimate Hypernaked machine.

Being at the pinnacle of the 2020 Z family is a huge responsibility which calls for a machine with a feature list satisfying the wants and needs of even the most demanding rider, delivering a specification that exceeds those demands thus creating “The Ultimate Z”. Echoing the core spirit of Kawasaki’s unique “Sugomi” design philosophy – where each styling innovation is matched equally by an engineering feature – the Z H2 literally bristles with interesting rider focused facets.

Of course, most attention will initially be focused on the majestic 998cc four-cylinder engine equipped with Kawasaki’s in-house developed and manufactured integrated balanced supercharger. With a targeted heady peak of 200PS, the virtues of the design are a controllable yet invigorating flow of power building to a satisfying Ram Air assisted crescendo matched to more down to earth subtleties such as a rider friendly character that results in an eminently manageable ride. So whilst the Z H2 will be attractive to highly experienced riders, its all-round manageability makes it accessible to the wide potential audience.

Exterior clues to the special nature of this “ultimate Z” abound with a new take on Sugomi styling and visual updates such as all LED lighting including indicators and licence plate illumination. The easy to read TFT meter panel is instantly recognisable and – upon closer inspection – the up/down quick shifter is apparent plus, on the left bar cluster, adjustment for the standard fit cruise control and a host of other rider-centric features. Kawasaki’s much praised trellis type chassis as used on previous supercharged models is updated for the new Z while Brembo M4 calipers appear attached to the Showa BPF front forks attesting to the high quality specification of this class leading naked machine.

Deeper inside, Kawasaki engineers have worked hard to ensure a dynamic balance between performance and durability making a supercharged streetbike a practical yet exotic reality. With its assist and slipper clutch plus dog ring gearbox technology, clever use of oil as a coolant to eliminate the need for a bulky intercooler and manifest oil jets playing on key components, KHI engineers have married reliability to rideability in a way only they know how.

A large number of electronic rider aids via the Bosch IMU such as traction control, intelligent anti-lock braking, cornering management function, selectable rider and power modes, anti-wheelie control are matched in the tech league table by Bluetooth connectivity which – via the Kawasaki Rideology Smartphone app – allows riders to interface with their machine and discover more about their ride and machine status, all via the screen of their mobile phone. Allied to practical information such as fuel economy and journey facts, there are also features such as a lean angle meter recorder that are sure to be a popular function.

From its asymmetric supercharger air intake to one side of the menacing twin LED headlamps, via the reverse embossed “Supercharged” icon on the impeller unit to the aggressive Sugomi stance and dramatic colour coded trellis chassis with its imposing bodywork, the Z H2 is a symphony of sensation. Much anticipated, much talked about and perhaps most eagerly awaited of all 2020 Hypernaked machines, the Z H2 is here and ready to take its place at the head of the Z family and to take charge of the popular naked class.

Kawasaki Ninja 650 uprated and updated for 2020

The virtues of Kawasaki’s twin-cylinder, water-cooled Ninja 650 were quickly realised upon its launch for the 2017 season and it rapidly became established as one of Kawasaki’s most sought after machines in the mid-capacity sports arena.

Supersport looks and lithe response combine with easy and fun handling that is allied to predictable and lively engine response. The Ninja 650 creates an overall sporting package that rewards riders new to the A2 licence category plus those for whom 650cc and a narrow chassis profile are the recipe for the perfect machine.

Engine flexibility from tick-over to the red line and urban manoeuvrability are just two of the Ninja 650’s recognised strong points. The confidence inspiring twin cylinder engine is also an ideal out of town and weekend thrills machine, either solo or with a passenger who will additionally benefit from a revised and comfier rear seat.

Now, for 2020, this lively sports model takes a giant stride forwards with a stunning multi-function 10.9cm colour TFT meter that replaces the previous meter and displays such items as gear position indicator, shift lamp, fuel gauge and Economical Riding Indicator plus other innovations including Bluetooth Smartphone connectivity. Appealing LED lighting front and rear plus Dunlop Sportmax Roadsport 2 tyres are also now fitted as standard.

For a new generation of riders – who would never leave home without their phone – the possibility to connect to their motorcycle is bound to be intriguing. Pairing via Bluetooth is simple and via Kawasaki’s own Rideology App, functions such as GPS route information and schedule service information can be accessed in addition to all the normal familiar notifications. Additionally, the colour display itself can be switched between “positive” and “negative” displays while a built-in light sensor alters brightness intensity.

Fuelling the visual connection with the awesome Ninja H2, the trellis type chassis of the Ninja 650 remains unchanged while reflecting the no-nonsense visual style of the KRT World Superbike. One of three colour options for 2020 will be a lime green/ebony look, evocative of the bikes competing in the World Superbike Championship. Joining this version will be a duo of other fresh options comprising of metallic spark black and a final choice of flat stardust white / metallic flat spark black.

Competition is fierce in the popular mid-capacity sports class and the new uprated and updated Ninja 650 is set to continue its coveted place among the front runners with this well-considered package of innovative and timely updates plus new colour options.

Kawasaki’s supercharged stable gallops into 2020 model year

Kawasaki’s supercharged stable is ready to take on all comers in 2020 with three versions of the highly respected Ninja H2 SX on dealer showroom floors (H2 SX, SE and SE+) along with the intimidating presence of the exclusive Ninja H2, Ninja H2 Carbon plus awe inspiring “track-only” Ninja H2R.

With totally in-house designed and manufactured Supercharger units, the specifications of the two breeds differs with the H2 SX family relying on a Balanced Supercharger to provide a broad spread of flexible touring power plus a glorious high rev response.

The Ninja H2, Ninja H2 Carbon and Ninja H2R are primed for a maximum sensory experience delivering a glorious symphony of power, performance and vivid unbridled supercharged acceleration; and, in the case of the Ninja H2R, a bench tested maximum output of over 320PS with Ram-Air assistance.

Adding to the sensory impact of the Ninja quintet there are some colour option updates to the Ninja H2 SX line with the addition of two new colour ways.

For the standard model, the metallic carbon gray / metallic matte carbon gray remains as a carry-over colour while for the SX SE and SX SE+ variants two new options are offered in metallic graphite gray / metallic diablo black / emerald blazed green and emerald blazed green / metallic diablo black and metallic graphite grey; the ultimate look and feel varying by the surface area covered by each colour with the areas most likely to encounter rider contact being treated with Kawasaki’s innovative self-healing Highly Durable Paint.

Whatever the supercharged desire in 2020, Kawasaki is determined to make sure customers mount the motorcycle of their dreams.

Z900RS and Z900RS CAFE adopt new colours for 2020

Like their 1970’s forebears that were unveiled in new and exciting colour options in each successive year, both the Z900RS and Z900RS CAFE have a vibrant new look for the 2020 season.

After only a few seasons in the Kawasaki range, each style of machine has found its own loyal following across a wide range of riders; from those that identified with the evocative Z1 style paint and graphic approach of just one of the three colours on offer for the Z900RS to the zestful and bold approach of the Z900RS CAFE.

These modern classics with their multitude of references to the iconic Z1 Super Four of 1972 move boldly into 2020 with a new Vintage Lime Green / Ebony look for the Z900RS CAFE continuing the distinctive direction for a machine equipped with a stylish bikini cowl, low handlebars and seat with race inspired “hump” at the rear – just like cafe racers of old.

The new season will witness the Z900RS in Kawasaki dealer showrooms resplendent in three colour and graphic options. Pursuing a heritage theme highly appreciated by those who cherish Kawasaki history – and those new to the iconic bikes of yesteryear – the Z900RS will be available in Candytone Green in 2020 with an accompanying graphic treatment that echoes the look of the 1973 Kawasaki Z1A, successor to the first year model Z1.

Also available will be a purposeful Metallic Diablo Black colour way and a Metallic Graphite Gray machine creating a choice as diverse as those that are attracted to the these models from within the Kawasaki fan base and those that are drawn from other brands to the Akashi based manufacturer for the very first time.

Carrying the True Spirit of the across the frame four cylinder Kawasaki heritage into a new season, both the Z900RS and Z900RS CAFE will continue their mission of offering authenticity, style and rider friendly features at the pinnacle of the highly competitive Retro Sport category.

New season Versys family colour options announced

Comprising an impressive three model family, the Versys range for 2020 offers some carry over colours plus a selection of new colour and graphic treatments.

Launched to critical acclaim in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura earlier this year, the impressive electronic suspension equipped Versys 1000 SE will continue to be available in Emerald Blazed Green / Pearl Storm Gray with the addition of a new Metallic Carbon Gray / Metallic Spark Black model for 2020.

The Versys 1000 enjoys a carry-over colour of Pearl Stardust White / Metallic Spark Black alongside a new colour-way of Candy Lime Green / Metallic Spark Black.

The middle weight “any roads” Versys 650 will be available from Kawasaki dealers for the 2020 season in no less than three colour options including the carry over livery of Metallic Moondust Gray / Metallic Spark Black. Alongside this will be a Pearl Blizzard White / Metallic Carbon Grey machine and a Matte Covert Khaki / Metallic Spark Black option.

Finally, the popular Versys-X 300 will continue to available for the coming season in Metallic Moondust Gray / Metallic Spark Black.

Ninja 400 available in two new liveries for 2020 MY

One of the success stories of the Kawasaki low to mid-capacity stable in the recent past, the Ninja 400 will be available in two new distinctive colour ways for the 2020 season; those being Lime Green with Ebony and a Metallic Spark Black / Lime Green combination.

In its darker option, the angular and purposeful Ninja benefits from subtle yet effective green highlight graphics while the impactful Kawasaki Racing Team influenced option would not look out of place in a race paddock.

A machine equally capable of city commuting, weekend rides and, in the hands of Ana Carrasco, a racing world championship; the Ninja 400 represents a great combination of manageable size coupled with impressive performance and handling.

“The Ninja 400 is such a great bike” comments Ana. “The sporty Ninja looks are really appealing and I love the way the power is so easy to use from very low revs all the way to maximum plus it is so maneuverable. If it’s good enough to dominate a world championship racing class I think it’s a great choice for riders who want racing style and everyday reliability.”

Kawasaki’s summer of freedom, excitement and thrills

Summer is here and many riders’ thoughts are turning to motorcycle touring holidays. With so many destination options across Europe, it’s fitting that Kawasaki has a three bike line up in the litre class Sports Touring sector offering an incredible range of choice, rider features and performance characteristics; proving that there is a genuine alternative to the Adventure bike category.

With an engine platform based on the zestful Z1000, the Z1000SX has quickly carved a reputation as a true sporting tourer with an apex attacking personality and accessory luggage capacity that literally created a new motorcycle category when the model line was originally launched. A sporting yet day-long riding position allied to aggressive angular looks appealed immediately to riders demanding a “one bike answer” to their weekday sport riding and weekend long distance needs. And with the stylish clean mount colour coded accessory panniers removed, the angular sporting lines of the Z1000SX re-emerge combining well with a rev-hungry engine that provides typical Kawasaki levels of feedback and excitement.

Again in a very select category, the Versys 1000 is the Kawasaki “any roads” litre class offering. Available for 2019 with semi-active electronic suspension front and rear, the Versys 1000 SE offers a commanding upright riding position from which to view countries and continents passing by. With a vast specification and array of electronic rider aids, the SE variant of the familiar Versys 1000 features touring benefits such as bodywork mounted cornering lights, electronic cruise control and selectable riding modes which, like numerous other functions, can be reviewed and revised via Smartphone using Kawasaki’s Rideology App linking owner to machine in a new, innovative way.  An “any weather, any roads” bike, the Versys also benefits from an adjustable screen plus, for those early touring starts, adjustable heated handlebar grips.

The third and, arguably, the pinnacle of the Kawasaki offering of three diverse and highly accomplished Sports Touring machines is the awesome Ninja H2-SX which is available for 2019 as an SE+ model offering the most advanced semi-active electronic motorcycle suspension system currently available.  Assessing road conditions and making minute adjustments in microseconds, the suspension and handling poise compliment the unique feature of the Ninja H2-SX, the incredible “balanced” Supercharger made totally in-house by Kawasaki. Offering a refined balance between torque, fuel economy and incredible forced induction performance, the integrated Supercharger sets what is already a formidable machine apart from all other Sports Tourers.

When motorcyclists choose to go touring they dream of freedom, excitement and thrills. With a choice of three sports touring machines from Kawasaki – each with their own unique characteristics – that dream can now become reality.

Kawasaki’s complete 2020 off road line up unveiled

KX450

Featuring a total of five KX and two KLX machines in its complete form, the Kawasaki off road offering for the 2020 season has been unveiled.

Headed by the highly accomplished KX450, the KX motocross range now showcases a new KX250 for 2020 boasting finger follower valve technology (shared with the Ninja ZX-10RR and KX450) which allows more aggressive camshaft timing and valve lift therefore increased power.

That power-up is also aided by changes to the fuel injection and induction system leading to an increase of 2.4 kW (3.3 PS). With the addition of a new, upgraded, Kayaba (KYB) ø48 mm inverted coil-spring fork.  The large-diameter inner tubes enable the use of large damping pistons, delivering smooth action and firm damping.  Stiffer spring rates front and rear match the KX250’s increased power.

Joining the impressive 450 and 250 machines in the KX range for 2020 are the “my first racer” two-stroke KX65 which has won countless 65cc class championships and the combination of the small wheel and big wheel two stroke KX85.

For enduro fans the KLX450R continues to offer large capacity competition ability while the KLX110 enables youngsters to take to two wheels and learn the basics of machine control on a rugged and reliable Kawasaki off-roader.

Pro racer, national level competitor, weekend track user and entry level rider, for 2020 Kawasaki continues to offer a comprehensive and durable range of lime green machines.

“Most powerful yet” Kawasaki KX250 unveiled for 2020 model year

With a comprehensive list of new features and key updates, the 2020 model KX250 motocross machine has been unveiled. As the most powerful specification production 250cc four stroke off-roader ever available from Kawasaki, the expectations for podium topping results are understandably high.

Continuing the theme of Supercross and motocross success, the new model year KX250 will reward the commitment shown by both professional and eager amateur riders taking the Kawasaki quarter litre capacity MX concept to the next level.

Leading the new thinking – and as the result of Kawasaki official team feedback during the current season – the front fork (along with key engine and other chassis modifications) illustrates well how seriously the Akashi factory takes off-road sport.

Chief among the front fork changes is the adoption of a Kayaba (KYB) assembly incorporating a new high-performance ø48 mm inverted coil-spring fork. The large-diameter inner tubes enable the use of large damping pistons, delivering smooth action and firm damping. Stiffer spring rates front and rear match the KX250’s increased power. The fork’s improved ability soak up bumps at the initial part of the stroke is complemented by increased firmness for handling large impacts and matched to the rear shock which features dual compression adjustability, allowing high-speed and low speed damping to be tuned separately.
Speaking of power, the headlines are dominated by changes to the cylinder head group and induction modifications. Featuring finger follower valve actuation most recently adopted by the Superbike world championship winning Ninja ZX-10RR, this new direction facilitates a higher rev ceiling and more aggressive camshaft timing whilst reducing overall valve train weight. Boasting an increase in peak power of approximately 2.4 kW (3.3 PS), and performance focused on the high-rpm range, the stronger high-rpm engine gives riders a special advantage on the straights. Combined with a higher rev limit, it’s now easier to tie corners together for quicker lap times.

Additionally, a revised airbox construction features a shorter (120 mm > 70 mm) tapered intake funnel, which contributes to increased high-rpm performance. Another KX250 innovative feature is the dual injectors – a feature since 2012 – utilising an injector downstream of the throttle valve (where injectors are located on standard FI systems). With that in mind, the larger diameter (ø43 mm >> ø44 mm) throttle body flows a greater volume of air, contributing to increased high-rpm performance, while repositioning the intake duct allows an even straighter approach for intake air.

Finally, downdraft-style intake routing increases the intake air’s approach angle into the cylinder from 29.5º to 32.5º, improving cylinder-filling efficiency and contributing to increased engine power.

These stand-out features – along with a long list of clever additional updates – combine to create the most powerful production KX250 four-stroke yet and a prime candidate for podium topping rides.

Within an environment where not simply winning on track is of high importance but also meeting and exceeding the efforts of rival manufacturer’s, Kawasaki has once more taken the highly successful KX250 concept to an even higher level.
As machines soon become available in dealers, committed and motivated Team Green enthusiasts, plus the huge number of Kawasaki focused off-road teams, will be able to experience first-hand the “most powerful yet” Kawasaki KX250.
