Following its successful unveiling at last year’s EICMA trade show held in Milan in November, production of the Diavel Titanium, a limited 500-bike edition, is now under way. The first bikes are already arriving at UK Ducati Stores, inevitably causing a buzz among those with a passion for the special versions created by Ducati.
Built using only the finest components and featuring plenty of exclusive details, the Diavel Titanium, in addition to inheriting the undisputed dynamic performance common to all the other models in the Diavel family, embodies a style that merges design, performance and technology. These aspects together with the outstanding craftsmanship of this unique version, adds a new dimension to the meaning of exclusivity.
The defining feature of this Diavel, which gives the bike such an extraordinary combination of strength and lightness, is titanium. The broad tank covers (side and central) and headlamp cover are both made of this exceptional metal which has been specially banded and chemically satin-etched to create a host of different chromatic shades. On the passenger seat cover, redesigned and widened on this version, the titanium is combined with carbon fibre.
Carbon fibre has also been used to make the redesigned air intakes, now wider and more powerful-looking, giving the Diavel Titanium a sharper, more aggressive look. The radiator covers, micro-screen, front and rear mudguards, front sprocket cover and filler cap cover are also made of carbon fibre.
Taking exclusivity to the next level, the hand-stitched seat made of Alcantara® is embellished with leather inserts. The aesthetics also benefit from a dark chrome finish on the frame, while another key styling detail on the Diavel Titanium takes the form of a high-grade, matt black ceramic coating on the exhaust pipes. Completing this special edition are the exceptional machine-finished forged wheels in exposed aluminium, designed to make the Diavel Titanium unquestionably unique.
To underline the exclusive value of this limited edition, each Diavel Titanium will sport an individually numbered tank-mounted plaque (XXX/500).
Within the vibrant and competitive European marketplace, Yamaha is widely recognized as being the leading quality scooter brand. The company’s 2015 line-up features one of the most diverse and inspirational ranges of class- leading models from Sport to Urban scooters through to New Mobility and 50cc, offering the best choice for any customer needs.
Yamaha’s enviable reputation as a manufacturer of sporty and stylish scooters has been further reinforced in recent years with the arrival of several TMAX and X-MAX models, as well as the launch of the innovative new 3- wheel Tricity.
The ongoing drive to offer all scooter customers an even wider choice of models in every segment continues, and for June 2015 Yamaha will launch the new NMAX, an entry-level 125cc urban commuter model that offers a charismatic, sporty style together with lively engine performance, premium class comfort and remarkable fuel economy.
The Urban segment is one of Yamaha’s core markets, and the company’s success in this important part of the European scooter business can be attributed to our wide range of compact and practical scooters that deliver reliable and affordable transport solutions to many different types of customers.
The new NMAX: Everyday life included
Featuring dynamic new bodywork inspired by our high-end sport models, the new NMAX combines edgy styling with strong acceleration together with easy manoeuvrability and remarkable economy. This high-specification entry-level urban scooter brings a whole new level of performance and style to the urban commuter segment, as well as offering outstanding functionality, comfort and convenience.
Aimed at younger and active city commuters who want a new kind of affordable premium scooter that appeals to the head as well as the heart, the new NMAX widens the reach of the Urban segment by blending high-end design with day-to-day practicality.
Equipped with an aerodynamic cowl, distinctive “Boomerang” side motifs inspired by bigger MAX scooters, and short front and rear overhangs, the NMAX’s sporty bodywork brings a fresh look to the urban entry-level 125cc scooter class, and offers a fashionable and convenient new solution to younger commuters.
By setting high standards for style, performance, practicality and value, this sporty and desirable new scooter is designed to offer a better solution to a generation of active and young commuters willing to enjoy metropolitan life in a smart and affordable way without compromising on quality, look and riding fun.
‘Blue Core’ 125cc liquid-cooled engine
The NMAX’s 125cc liquid-cooled 4-stroke engine has been designed using our new ‘Blue Core’ approach towards small engine development. The aim of the company’s ‘Blue Core’ design philosophy is to create a new generation of compact engines that maintain high levels of riding enjoyment while delivering good fuel economy and enhanced environmental performance.
In order to achieve these goals, Yamaha’s engineers have focused on increasing combustion and cooling efficiency, while at the same time reducing power losses with the application of advanced new technologies.
Variable valve actuation (VVA) for linear acceleration feeling
The liquid-cooled, 4-stroke SOHC 125cc engine is the first Yamaha scooter engine to feature a 4-valve cylinder head with a newly developed variable valve actuation (VVA) that gives a strong and linear acceleration feeling.
As part of the new ‘Blue Core’ approach, this innovative technology delivers smooth and powerful acceleration, especially in the low to mid range, making the NMAX an exciting and sporty performer that’s perfectly equipped for busy inner city riding with the typical urban stop-and-go situations.
The VVA system works via a mechanism that shifts between two different intake cam lobes depending on engine speed, and as well as contributing towards the NMAX’s smooth, linear torque curve and bringing out good power output characteristics at different engine revs, the VVA system improves combustion efficiency for better fuel economy. In WMTC mode, fuel consumption figures of 45.7km/litre have been achieved, making the NMAX an extremely cost effective way to travel into and out of the city.
Optimized fuel injection settings
The newly developed engine is equipped with a fuel injection system that delivers the fuel/air mix via an elliptical port directly into the compact combustion chamber, giving high levels of combustion efficiency for excellent starting and good fuel economy. The compact and lightweight new SOHC 4- valve engine design also includes a large-capacity air cleaner and a high lift camshaft, and these features contribute towards high fuel efficiency as well as strong running performance.
Side mounted radiator for improved cooling performance
For optimum cooling performance, Yamaha’s engineers mounted the radiator and cooling fan on the side of the engine, which also has the advantage of freeing up space in front of the engine and contributing towards a more spacious footboard area.
Reducing horsepower losses for increased fuel economy
Using the new ‘Blue Core’ philosophy, Yamaha’s engineers focused closely on reducing horsepower losses during the development of the compact and lightweight new 125cc engine, and the NMAX features an offset cylinder design that helps to improve fuel economy by minimizing frictional losses between the piston and cylinder wall. In addition, the use of a low-friction DiASil coating on the cylinder also helps to increase engine efficiency by producing more power using less fuel.
Other measures to reduce horsepower losses include the adoption of a roller rocker arm, as well as the use of LED lights that consume less electrical power and enable the use of a more compact AC magneto.
Sporty new chassis for stability, agility and comfort
The sporty DNA is not just evident in the new NMAX’s looks, but it can also be seen in the design of the new frame, whose layout benefits from the use of small-diameter steel tubing that achieves a light and strong structure with a good rigidity balance.
The lightweight tubular frame has been developed to give a comfortable ride and also provide an excellent feeling of front wheel road contact. The frame’s high level of torsional rigidity ensures a comfortable ride with a feeling of stability, and the good rigidity balance of the chassis also means that the rider can make quick directional changes in traffic, and enjoy the NMAX’s high levels of agility.
Like our high-end sport scooter models, the NMAX frame features a central ‘tunnel’ containing the fuel tank – and for added riding comfort the NMAX features linked type engine mounts using rubber bushes that absorb vibration for a smooth and comfortable ride.
ABS as standard, with 230mm disc brakes
An important and significant feature on the NMAX is that it is the first scooter in its class to be equipped with ABS as standard, making it an even more attractive proposition – particularly for new riders.
To underline its position as the premium entry-level city scooter, the new NMAX is equipped with 230mm front and rear discs that deliver strong and progressive braking performance.
Roomy riding position
Despite its compact chassis dimensions, the NMAX has been designed to offer premium class comfort for riders and passengers with small or large physiques. The roomy body design gives the rider plenty of foot space to stretch their legs out, and the spacious layout allows the rider to adopt a range of relaxed or sporty riding positions.
The stepped dual seat positions the passenger slightly higher than the rider to give good legroom and improved forward visibility – and for added passenger convenience there’s a grab bar, while the flat side panels minimize interference with the passenger’s legs.
Twin shock rear suspension and 13-inch wheels
For high levels of riding comfort – together with good chassis rigidity and high stability feeling – the NMAX is fitted with twin rear shock absorbers that are equipped with dual rate springs to give 90mm of smooth wheel movement.
The use of 13-inch wheels also contributes towards the feeling of comfort as well as ensuring high-speed stability. A 110/70-13 front tyre is fitted, with a wide 130/70-13 rear tyre in order to enhance the sporty handling performance and accentuate this entry-level scooter’s premium specification.
Underseat helmet storage
Beneath the NMAX’s seat is a large helmet storage compartment designed to take one large full-face helmet with space to spare, and the hinged dual seat also benefits from a spring mechanism that keeps the seat open when accessing the load space.
Triple-lamp LED headlights and full LCD instruments
Featuring an LED headlight, the modern design of the NMAX’s front face also shows its sporty side. On low beam, this stylish and powerful LED headlight has a twin eye look, while on high beam a central LED light comes on to give a dynamic triple lamp appearance.
The rear light also adopts a LED brake light, and the use of these LEDs not only gives the NMAX a premium look, but also contributes towards increased fuel efficiency by enabling the use of a compact AC magneto.
The compact and easy to read instrument panel features a single pod containing a full LCD readout, with LED backlighting. This modern and minimalist design sits neatly behind the compact screen, and underlines the NMAX’s full contemporary look.

BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars announce that they are starting an exclusive cooperation in innovative motorcycle safety clothing systems. The first product to be launched under this cooperation will be a BMW Motorrad jacket jointly developed by BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars, combined with an airbag waistcoat developed using Alpinestars technology. The new BMW Motorrad jacket, being branded by both makers, will be available in both male and female versions and the public presentation of this newly developed airbag jacket will be held later this year.
The airbag waistcoat is based on Alpinestars’ Tech-Air™ airbag system, the world’s first self-contained street airbag system that independently functions without the need for sensors to be installed on the bike and the subsequent need to link a specific motorcycle to the airbag system used by the rider.
This means that the airbag waistcoat offers the freedom to ride any bike on any surface at any time and can be used with any type of BMW Motorrad motorcycle or scooter, allowing the rider to easily switch between bikes without reconfiguring or reinitializing the bike-to-rider set-up.
Therefore, the system is immediately ready for use and no time is wasted in setting up electronic pairing between rider and/or passenger and motorcycle. This BMW Motorrad/Alpinestars jacket and airbag waistcoat offers comprehensive upper body protection including shoulders, back and frontal torso. By incorporating its sensors close to the rider’s body the airbag system activates without the need for a triggering wireless signal to be sent from the bike.
BMW Motorrad is the only motorcycle manufacturer to have developed the complete range of rider equipment ever since the 1970s – from motorcycle helmets to rider suits, boots and gloves. In doing so, high priority is attached to maximum comfort for the rider and passenger as well as minimizing the potential consequences of accidents.
BMW Motorrad has always regarded motorcycling and safety as being inseparably linked and anchored in the “Safety 360°” principle. “Safety 360°” breaks down the overall concept of safe motorcycling into three facets: safety
technology in the vehicle, safety deriving from rider equipment and safety through rider training Alpinestars has been innovating motorcycle riding technology for rider protection, performance and comfort for over 50 years. The Tech-Air™ airbag system, which forms the basis of their active safety cooperation with BMW Motorrad, is the result of Alpinestars’ intensive research and development which commenced in 2001.
For decades, both companies have maintained a leading role in active and passive motorcycling safety. This new cooperation, between BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars, is now extending their position further through this joint development agreement.

Over 8,000 bike aficionados from across Europe gathered in France last weekend (11 – 12 April), for Bike Shed Paris. The event, held in association with Triumph Motorcycles, Britain’s biggest large capacity motorbike manufacturer, was hosted at the city’s historic Carreau du Temple
Lifting the lid on all things custom, the event is a stylish celebration of Europe’s burgeoning custom bike scene and marks the second year that Triumph has served as the exhibition’s lead sponsor.
In total, 127 high-quality custom bikes were on display at the exhibition, with professionals and shed-builders alike showcasing their eye-catching creations. Many of these were markedly different from the traditional bikes they started life as. Alongside the one-off, two wheeled wonders, there was also a display of specially commissioned work from a dozen artists.
It marks the first time the event was held in Paris and precedes the fourth BSMC London event, which is also supported by Triumph and is taking place this year at Tobacco Dock on the 23 and 24 May.
BSMC started life as an underground bike club, hosting custom events for a select group of dedicated shed builders. Last year’s London event, which featured an array of eye-catching customs, including a selection of one-off Triumph’s, boasted more than 7,000 paying visitors and Bike Shed now receives over one million hits a week on Facebook alone.
Rick Cawley, general manager for Triumph UK and Ireland, added: “Custom bikes are a strong part of Triumph’s heritage and we’re delighted to continue our ongoing support of BSMC. The event is a welcoming, all-inclusion celebration of the custom scene and encapsulates everything there is to love about biking.”
Anthony ‘Dutch’ van Someren, founder of the Bike Shed, commented: “Europe’s custom bike scene is very exciting and creative, and the Paris show provided a platform for some of Europe’s best bike builders to showcase their talents. There were some amazing, one-of-a-kind bikes on display, showcasing the skills and ingenuity of the builders, all runners and all rideable. Having the support of Triumph for our 2015 events, both in Paris and London, is a real boost and we’re thrilled to be working with a brand that has such an authentic custom history and is brave enough to take the lead on supporting our consumer-led events.”

Ducati is back at the Audi City Lab which, following its success last December, is returning to Via Montenapoleone in the centre of Milan for the city’s Design Week, until 10 May.
The Audi City Lab is located in Milan’s fashion district, known as the Golden Quadrilateral, which attracts the movers and shakers of the international design scene – a prestige location for the series of events that are scheduled to take place. The themes covered will range from design and music to the future of mobility and innovation. A host of exceptional guests will be participating, including architects, designers and high-profile personalities from the various brands which make up the Audi Group – Audi, Ducati, Lamborghini and Italdesign Giugiaro.
Ducati has chosen to contribute to the Audi City Lab with the “Lightness Experience” represented by two different exhibits.
The first exhibit, on display until 28 April outside the location, directly on Via Montenapoleone, is a sculpture in gorgeous white Carrara marble. Designed by Gianandrea Fabbro (Chief Designer at the Ducati Design Centre) it is inspired by the style and lines of the Panigale, which Fabbro himself designed.
The sculpture called “Fortitudo mea in levitate” (My lightness is my strength) was created from three blocks of the purest Carrara marble, sculpted with great mastery to convey the sense of lightness set in strong contrast with the weight of the marble, the art of sculpture’s most noble material.
The second exhibit places the spotlight on a Ducati Panigale R, the most powerful and efficient production bike available in the range, a true benchmark in the field in terms of power to weight ratio. The Panigale R is on display on the first floor of the temporary store where it will stay for the entire time the Audi City Lab is open. Wall-mounted, inside a symbolic display case, the motorcycle looks as if it were floating, weightless, defying the laws of gravity, reiterating the theme of the “Ducati Lightness Experience” and accentuated in this instance by the impact of its technological content.
The Audi City Lab (www.audicitylab.audi.it) will also host four big evening events, as well as a busy schedule of daily talk-shows which Ducati clients and enthusiasts can take part in, alongside professionals.
Situated in the heart of the achingly cool Marais area of Paris, the 19th century Carreau du Temple came alive with a custom twist last weekend as Yamaha’s Yard Built motorcycles took their place alongside the cream of Europe’s custom motorcycles for the 2015 Bike Shed Paris show.
Fresh out of the box and on display was the latest Yard Built creation, the stunning XJR1300 ‘Skullmonkee’ by Copenhagen builders the Wrenchmonkees. Based on the 2015 XJR1300, the ‘Skullmonkee’ is a masterclass in creative customisation. Joining the ‘Skullmonkee’ on display was the show-stopping VMAX ‘Infrared’ by German builder JvB-moto. Completing the custom Yard Built display was the inspired XV950 El Ratòn Asesino by fellow German builder Marcus Walz.
The custom machines were complemented by the standard 2015 XJR1300 Racer and XV950R. Both bikes were in part inspired by the creations of Marcus Walz and the Wrenchmonkees and were very comfortable sitting in the company of the custom machines.
Yamaha France took advantage of the sunny weather and assembled bike lovers, organising a city ride out with selected journalists on a mix of old, new, custom and standard Yamaha machines.
The Bike Shed show now moves to London on 23rd/24th May where Yard Built will be back and pulling the covers off at least two exciting new projects!
Thousands of custom motorcycle fans gathered at the Carreau du Temple in Paris today were given the first look at the latest creation to come from Yamaha’s ground breaking Yard Built project, the Wrenchmonkees XJR1300, ‘Skullmonkee’.
The 2015 Yamaha XJR1300 and XJR1300 Racer have drawn considerable attention in standard form already, with design updates inspired heavily by the custom world. A shortened and cleaned frame, narrower fuel tank and smaller headlight pay homage to recent custom creations and also show the potential for further customisation.
Throughout 2015 a series of Yard Built projects by select custom builders will focus on the new XJR1300 will demonstrate what is possible through creative use of ‘bolt-on’ parts, reinforcing the real ‘Yard Built’ concept instead of dramatic cutting and welding. First up to take on the challenge are two legendary Copenhagen based builders.
“The Wrenchmonkees provided valuable insight into this latest model of XJR with their earlier collaborations”, says Yamaha Motor Europe Product Manager, Shun Miyazawa. “Their Yard Built XJR1300 ‘Monkeefist’ was one of the ‘fathers’ of the 2015 XJR, providing essential inspiration to the modern design. Because of this influence we didn’t feel the need to change the bike drastically, instead focusing on fine tuning and upgrading where necessary to enhance the bike.”
“We worked hard to ensure we made no radical design changes for the build”, commented Wrenchmonkee Per Nielson, “instead focusing on adding our clean style and silhouette with no cutting or welding to the framework.”
Fellow Wrenchmonkee Nicholas Bech adds, “We looked to strip the bike back and removed some pieces to make it look like they had never been there, then from the beginning we were looking to work with other companies to find bolt-on parts that we could modify to create our style.”
The Wrenchmonkees tracked down and modified the coolest, cleanest and most fitting aftermarket parts to transform the bike. Handcrafted Wrenchmonkees parts, including CNC milled Wrenchmonkees ‘Monkeefist style’ aluminium triple trees and engine covers were also added.
The super clean handlebars are finished with LSL Speed Match black aluminium clip-ons and Biltwell grips, centered on a neat MMB mini digital speedo with yellow light, above a unique custom WM yellow headlight.
The brake system gets a serious work over with a full Beringer set up added, including Hypersport brake discs, Beringer calipers front and back, Beringer brake master cylinder and matching Beringer clutch master. Black steel braided hoses add the final touches.
Matt black LSL aluminium rear sets have been customised in-house to give amore aggressive riding position reinforced by Öhlins STX 36 shocks on the rear. The standard XJR rims remain as fitting wheels for the Skullmonkee, but come wrapped in Michelin Pilot Road 4s to hold the road.
An LSL Titan steering damper keeps everything under control and a Wrenchmonkees custom rear bracket with LED light is the last thing you’ll see above a custom 4 into 2 stainless system with Wrenchmonkees/ Spark stainless mufflers.
The finished bike is sublime, coated in a gloss black paint job with Skullmonkee tank emblem and a few simple gold touches, it is a fitting tribute to the 20th anniversary of this legendary street bike.
XJR owners can order Skullmonkee parts directly from the Wrenchmonkees website to add some serious Copenhagen style to their ride. www.wrenchmonkees.com

Government announces grant saving up to £1,500 for electric motorcycles.
Business Minister Matthew Hancock announced the subsidy which will apply to BMW Motorrad’s electric maxi-scooter.
New purchasers of the BMW C evolution maxi-scooter will be among the first riders able to take advantage of a grant for electric motorcycles just announced by the UK Government.
The grant offers up to £1,500 off the purchase price of a new electric motorcycle and allows motorcyclists to reduce both their running costs and environmental impact.
Up to £7.5m will be set aside to boost the uptake for electric two wheelers, with significant benefits both for the environment and reducing personal travel costs.
Phil Horton, General Manager for BMW Motorrad UK, said: “This is hugely important step forward in the government’s policy for electric vehicles. BMW Group is at the forefront of electric vehicle development with the i3 and i8 cars – and the C evolution is the first two wheeled electric vehicle to bear the Motorrad brand. With the grant from the Government factored in, the C evolution becomes an even more appealing option for urban commuters and riders.”
Business Minister Matthew Hancock said: “Low emission vehicles are the future and show that we can meet our climate change commitments without giving up our cars or motorbikes. Electric motorcycles and scooters have got fantastic potential and can be a real force for good.
“This investment shows we are serious about increasing the uptake of cleaner vehicles in the UK and offer a fantastic place for firms to locate their R&D and manufacturing facilities. Supporting new technologies is a key part of our long-term economic plan.”
Customers purchasing a new electric motorcycle meeting the subsidy’s requirements – which includes the BMW C evolution – will have the purchase price reduced.
