  1. Introduction

The much-loved CBR600RR has an impressive and hard-won racing pedigree. It was piloted to FIM World Super Sports championship victory every year from 2003 to 2008, and again in 2010, 2012 and 2014. It won the Asia Road Racing championship from 2012 to 2016 and the All-Japan Road Race championship ST600 class from 2003 to 2011, and in 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2019. Its engine also provided the power for Moto2 between 2010 and 2018.

The 600RR departed from Honda’s European showrooms at the start of 2017 as the trend away from supersport machinery towards naked and adventure models accelerated. In the intervening years, the middleweight sports category has seen a revival, and the model was reintroduced for 21YM in Japan and Thailand.

Now the time is ripe for the purest of all road-legal sports bikes to make its return to Europe. Loaded with cutting-edge MotoGP-inspired electronics and aerodynamics, the new 24YM CBR600RR is a rare, beautiful thing – a free-revving four-cylinder motorcycling gem that exists in a class of one.

Born ready to carve an elegant line on the open road or closed circuit, there’s no other riding experience quite like it.

  1. Model Overview

Honda’s supersports icon returns to Europe with its 599cc, inline four-cylinder engine producing 89kW @ 14,250rpm, and benefitting from an assist/slipper clutch and standard-fit quickshifter.

An electronics package drawn from the RC213V-S and the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade includes Throttle By Wire control, 9-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Wheelie Control and Rear Lift Control.

At the centre of the action and managing all of the systems, including Cornering ABS, is a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) as found inside its sibling, the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade. There are 3 default riding modes, plus 2 User modes for adjustment of Engine Power, Engine Braking, HSTC and Wheelie Control.

The chassis comprises a twin-spar aluminium frame, aluminium swingarm, 41mm Showa Big Piston USD front forks and Unit Pro-Link Showa rear shock. Four-piston radial-mount front calipers provide the braking power, and a Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) extra stability.

The full colour TFT screen includes Street, Circuit and Mechanic modes. A Shift Up indicator and lap timer are also featured. Honda’s Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) and Honda Ignition Security System (HISS) are included in the specification.

Like all bikes in Honda’s supersport family, the 24YM CBR600RR is available in two colour options: under-the-radar Matt Ballistic Black Metallic, and evocative Grand Prix Red HRC TriColour, the signature colourway of Honda Racing Corporation (HRC).

  1. Key Features

3.1 Engine

  • Inline four-cylinder engine produces 89kW with 63Nm torque
  • Assist/slipper clutch

The CBR600RR’s 599cc, 16-valve inline four-cylinder engine produces 89kW @ 14,250rpm, with 63Nm torque @ 11,500rpm. To achieve the power output at this rpm ceiling the materials used for the camshafts, valve springs and crankshaft have been upgraded for its return to manage both high-rpm inertia force and durability. Bore and stroke is set at 67mm x 42.5mm, with compression ratio of 12.2:1.

Every aspect of intake, combustion and exhaust has been through development since the CBR600RR was last on sale in Europe. To flow enough volume at high rpm throttle body diameter is 44mm. The port of the throttle butterfly valve and the intake-side valve have been shaped to allow the cross-section of the entire port (including the inside of the throttle body) to run smoothly, reducing intake pressure drop.

The combination of this smooth intake passage and Throttle By Wire (TBW) delivers smooth throttle control, especially at partial openings from fully closed. The inlet ports have been re-shaped, increasing flow capacity by 2.2%.

Valve timing has also been adjusted: closing of the inlet valves has been pulled back 5° with the exhaust valves opening 5° later, improving the intake efficiency of the fuel/air mixture and exhaust of combustion gas. Inlet valve diameter is 27.5mm matched to 22.5mm exhaust. For maximum cooling efficiency around the cylinder head, long reach spark plugs allow the water jacket to sit close to the plug hole and exhaust valve seat.

The 4-2-1 exhaust uses large bore diameters to enhance high-rpm gas flow; wall thickness has been carefully managed to minimise weight gain. The catalyser is also physically larger, and an important part of the EURO5 homologation process.

An assist/slipper clutch manages rear wheel ‘hop’ through rapid down changes and hard braking. It also reduces the physical force needed to operate it by 32% over a standard design and employs die-cast aluminium cams at both transmitting and receiving ends, with clearance between both optimised to improve lever feel.

3.2 Engine Electronics

  • RC213V-S-derived Throttle By Wire (TBW) control system
  • 9-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)
  • 3 default riding modes plus options to customise Power, Engine Brake, HSTC and Wheelie Control
  • Quickshifter standard fitment

The Throttle By Wire (TBW) used by the CBR600RR is drawn from the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and was developed on the RC213V-S. An Acceleration Position Sensor (APS), which interfaces with the throttle grip is built into the switchgear. It sends a signal to the ECU, which then sends a signal to the TBW motor that controls the butterfly. Crucially, the return spring and friction generated by the APS offers a completely natural throttle feel and control. It also offers the same controllability and feel across all of the power levels.

The electronic package that goes with TBW is also drawn from the Fireblade. 9-level (plus off) Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) uses slip rate control (which monitors the rate at which slip is changing based on the ratio of front/rear wheel speeds) to smoothly moderate rapid wheel spin. It gives smooth, intuitive grip management, with software developed from wide-ranging, top-level feedback from around the world, including HRC’s riders. Level 1 has the weakest intervention, level 9 the strongest.

There are three default riding modes: Mode 1 (Fast Riding), Mode 2 (Fun Riding) and Mode 3 (Comfortable Riding) with 2 User options for a full custom setup across all of the parameters. Modes can be switched while riding (from the left handlebar switchgear), as can the HSTC level when in User 1 or 2.

Power (P) operates through levels 1-5 with 1 giving ultimate outright power. Engine Brake (EB) manages performance on a closed throttle through levels 1-3, with 1 being the strongest engine braking; Wheelie (W) manages through levels 1-3 (plus off) with 1 giving the weakest intervention.

Wheelie Control uses information gathered by the IMU on the CBR600RR’s pitch angle, along with front and rear wheel speed sensors to maintain torque and deal with the wheelie without sacrificing forward drive.

A standard-fit quick shifter delivers razor-fast changes, with short fuel cut time while shifting, and smoother torque pickup after shifting. It offers 3-level adjustment for feel.

3.3 Chassis

  • Twin-spar aluminium frame, aluminium swingarm
  • 41mm Showa Big Piston USD forks
  • Bosch 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU)
  • Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD)
  • Four-piston, radial-mount front brake calipers and floating discs

For this latest incarnation of the CBR600RR Honda’s development engineers picked through the bike, front to back, looking for weight savings with performance enhancement to complement the addition of a Bosch 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (rather than 5-axis of the 21YM model) to the electronic package.

The updated IMU is key to the bike’s ability to build speed and measures every dynamic aspect, in each plane, calculating 100 times a second using Honda’s own algorithm and in turn managing the HSTC and Cornering ABS, which is a new technology applied to the 24YM CBR600RR.

It’s 2.5kg lighter than the ‘Combined-ABS’ electronic system of the previous design and employs a Nissin ABS modulator and ECU – which takes input from the IMU and deceleration and slip rate from the front/rear wheel speed sensors to manage brake pressure in a straight line and while cornering.

Rear Lift Control is also a new feature, and again uses IMU input to maximise braking performance while minimising rear wheel lift.

At the heart of the chassis is a hollow, die-cast twin-spar aluminium frame. Wheelbase is set at 1370mm, with rake of 24 o 06’ and 100mm trail. Length from swingarm pivot to rear wheel spindle is 569mm; the aluminium swingarm is also 150g lighter than the previous model, with each part redesigned to save weight but also to give the desired rigidity balance. Kerb weight is set at 193kg.

Fully adjustable Showa 41mm Big Piston USD forks offer high-quality suspension reaction and control. They’re also 15mm longer in the legs to allow flexible geometry changes. The fully adjustable Showa rear shock operates through Unit Pro-Link.

Up front, dual radial-mount four-piston calipers clamp 310mm floating discs; a radial-piston master cylinder is also standard fit. A rear, single-piston caliper works a 220mm disc. Cast aluminium wheels wear 120/70ZR17M/C  front and 180/55ZR17M/C rear tyres.

A Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) – designed exclusively for the CBR600RR – operates relative to velocity and is ECU-controlled; at lower speeds its main valve opens, reducing damping force. At high speed the valve closes, increasing damping force for maximum stability.

3.4 Styling & Equipment

  • Best in class aerodynamic performance
  • Winglets generate downforce to enhance front tyre grip
  • Full colour TFT screen

While it’s a stunning looking motorcycle, the CBR600RR’s styling also provides two performance upgrades: as a fully equipped road bike, the lowest Coefficient of Drag in class, at 0.555 (with rider in a racing tuck), and winglets to improve corner entry stability and turning ability while accelerating.

A guiding phrase used by Honda’s development team for the bodywork was ‘Embody the functional design in pursuit of high-speed on-track performance.’ Everything learnt producing the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, and before it the MotoGP-derived RC213V-S, was applied with a focus on the mass centralisation of form.

As a result, the sharp, super-compact LED headlights, indicators and ABS modulator are lighter compared to the previous design. The riding position too has been made deliberately flexible for road and track; the fuel tank cover sits 10mm lower, allowing the rider to tuck in neatly at high speed. It’s also slimmer and designed to allow the rider’s arms to also have a natural place at speed. The screen sits at a 38°, to maximise aerodynamic efficiency relative to any position the rider might use on track. Seat height is set at 820mm.

Radiator cooling efficiency is focus of the mid-section of the fairing, and airflow speed and pressure into the front wheel housing has been optimised for both flow in and out. The lower fairing extends close to the rear wheel and is shaped to move airflow downwards. This reduces the amount of direct air pressure exposure against the tyre, reducing overall resistance.

The winglets generate downforce – maintaining front tyre load – on corner entry as the rider leans in and releases the front brake. And overall cornering stability is improved, as is corner speed. Carefully designed, the winglets do not interfere with the bike’s handling agility, with the vertical shaping suppressing the development of vortices.

A full colour TFT screen includes Street, Circuit and Mechanic modes. A Shift-Up indicator uses 5 white horizontal LEDs above the central display and turn on and flash at the pre-set rpm for shifting. Information available also includes lap time, number of laps and fastest lap.

Lighting is LED. The dual front headlights are lightweight in design and allow the optimal intake area for the central ram-air duct. Honda’s Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) is linked to the ABS modulator and activates the front and rear indicators under sudden, hard braking to warn other road users.

Honda Ignition Security System (HISS) uses interlock control between the ID tag in the key and internal ID of the engine ECU so there’s no way to start the engine without the key. A red LED on the dash flashes every 2.5 seconds for 24 hours once the ignition is off and even when it stops flashing, HISS is still on.

A small final detail to note – the CBR600RR wears its racing DNA in the shape of Honda’s signature wing on its fuel tank cover – exactly the same as the RC213V-S.

A limited edition CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP Carbon Edition is also available.

  1. Introduction

Since its original 1992 introduction Honda’s iconic Fireblade has evolved into an incredible 1,000cc super sports motorcycle. And it’s also been the base of a competitive race machine, on short circuits around the world and the roads of the Isle of Man TT.

But time – and competition – always races on and in 20YM Honda drew the line under where the CBR1000RR Fireblade had been and looked forward to where it was going. And, as a result, two brand-new motorcycles – the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade* and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP – were created with heavy involvement from Honda Racing Corporation to carry the legend forward.

Leaning heavily on the engine and chassis technology of the RC213V-S ‘street-legal MotoGP machine’, with aerodynamics drawn from the RC213V MotoGP bike, the new Fireblade was designed from the ground up – in terms of engine, handling and aerodynamics – for pure, outright track performance.

22YM marked 30 years of the Fireblade which saw the introduction of a variety of detail upgrades to the engine to boost acceleration; the intake ports, airbox, airbox funnels and exhaust mid-section were all revised to deliver extra mid-range thrust. The final drive sprocket also went up 3 teeth, to 43, with quickshifter performance upgraded. Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) was also optimised for refined rear tyre traction management, and throttle feel improved.

24YM sees the Fireblade SP drive further up its development curve once again. A host of engine and gearbox updates deliver a healthy mid-range performance boost, with improved throttle response, alongside detailed riding position changes and upgrades from Brembo and Öhlins, with the aim of producing the bike you need to win out-of-the-box and, at the same time, elevating the riding experience out on the open road.

  1. Model Overview

The Fireblade SP’s inline four-cylinder semi-cam gear engine delivers 113Nm torque and makes peak power of 160Kw. And while the headline figures are familiar, the delivery through the rev-range has been completely changed – the product of a huge amount of HRC development and knowhow– to generate corner exit acceleration topped by huge top-end power.

The addition of 2-Motor Throttle By Wire (TBW) increases part-throttle control and allows amplified engine braking. Compression ratio has been raised, intake ports adjusted, and valve timing altered in conjunction with new valve springs, a lighter crankshaft and optimised, lighter titanium conrods. All gear ratios have been made shorter, to increase drive force to the rear wheel.

The 4-2-1 exhaust downpipes are ovalized and feed a titanium Akrapovič muffler now slightly larger in volume but 5dB quieter in operation.

Three default riding modes cover most conditions with options to fully adjust Power, Engine Brake, Wheelie Control and HSTC and all settings have been revised for the new output character. The electronics package also includes adjustable Start Mode and standard-fit quickshifter.

As before, the aluminium diamond frame uses the rear of the engine as upper shock mount while the swingarm is based on the RC213V-S design. The rigidity balance has been carefully optimised – and made more pliant – to exploit the engine’s performance in terms of feel for front and rear grip levels, and steering accuracy.

A six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) provides accurate 3D estimation of riding dynamics and provides input to manage all of the electronic systems. It also controls the rod-type 3-level Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD).

The 24YM CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP is the first bike in the world to use the new, third generation Öhlins Smart Electronic Control (SE-C3.0) 43mm NPX (SV) forks and TTX36 (SV) rear shock, that now use Spool Valve internals and offer race-quality suspension, with settings managed by Öhlins Object Based Tuning interface (OBTi). A digital spring preload guide via the instrument panel is also a new feature.

The front discs are worked by new Brembo Stylema R four-piston calipers and Brembo brake lever/master cylinder, while the Cornering ABS now features RACE mode, which allows the rear ABS to be turned off.

A redesigned fairing mid-section houses new winglets that generate downforce to improve braking stability and consistent front-end grip but with 10% less effort through high-speed corners. The riding position has also been adjusted to elevate control, with handlebars higher and footpegs lower.

The fully customisable 5-inch TFT display offers intuitive control via a four-way switch on the left handlebar. Now, on cold start, the redline moves up the rpm scale as operating temperature is reached.

Honda’s Smart Key system adds convenience and the Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) increases visibility to road users behind.

The 24YM CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP will be available in Grand Prix Red (Tricolour).

The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP Carbon Edition

The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP Carbon Edition will be available in unique Mat Pearl Morion Black paint. It will feature a stealthy carbon fibre Front Mudguard, Under Cowl, Middle Cowl, Winglets, Front Shelter and Mudguard Cover to maximise its appeal.

Limited to only 300 units and featuring a commemorative plaque on the airbox cover, the Carbon Edition is 1kg lighter, with 10 – 40% weight saving per component.

  1. Key Features

3.1 Engine

  • Short-stroke, inline four-cylinder semi-cam gear train engine produces 160Kw @ 14,000rpm with peak torque of 113Nm @ 12,000rpm
  • Compression ratio raised for 24YM plus revised valve timing, with new 3-stage unequal pitch springs
  • Crankcase optimised for weight reduction, inertial mass reduction for crankshaft and con-rods
  • All gear ratios – and primary drive – shortened for improved acceleration and corner exit drive
  • Lightweight Akrapovič muffler features increased volume and noise reduction

The Fireblade’s 1,000cc, inline DOHC four-cylinder semi-cam gear engine was designed with heavy input from the HRC MotoGP development program. For 24YM it delivers peak power of 160Kw @ 14,000rpm with peak torque of 113Nm @ 12,000rpm.

A huge amount of HRC development has gone into the engine to change the way it delivers power and torque, throughout the rev-range, with a goal of increasing drive force to the rear wheel in every gear.

While continuing to share the same ‘over square’ 81mm bore and 48.5mm stroke as the RC213V, valve timing – duration and lift – have been revised for 24YM and compression ratio raised from 13.4:1 to 13.6:1. The inlet valves are 32.5mm diameter (and also lighter for 24YM) with 28.5mm exhaust; they’re operated by finger-follower rocker arms; valve angle on the intake side is 9°, reducing the surface area of the combustion chamber and improving combustion efficiency. Also new are 3-stage elliptical progressive springs for both inlet and exhaust, while the intake ports have been optimised for gas flow.

MotoGP technology is everywhere internally. Friction is reduced by the use of Diamond Like Carbon (DLC) on the cam lobes – just like the RC213V-S. 20YM marked the first time this process was used on a mass-produced motorcycle; it produces a reduction in valve train frictional loss of 35% compared to non DLC-coated lobes.

The valve train itself uses a semi-cam gear train system. To drive such high-rpm/high-cam lift performance the chain is driven from the timing gear located on the crankshaft via the cam idle gear; this makes it shorter in length. For 24YM the crankshaft pin and journal diameters have been optimised, saving 450g of inertial mass.

Forged TI-64A Titanium (a material developed by Honda) con-rods and con-rod caps save 50% in weight compared to the previous Chromium Molybdenum steel versions; they’re even lighter for 24YM (by 20g) and employ HB 149 Chromium Molybdenum Vanadium, (again a Honda development) steel bolts and do not use fastening nuts.

For durability the same configuration as the RC213V-S is applied to the sliding surfaces; the small-end bushings are made of shaved C1720-HT Beryllium copper (because of its high-rpm reliability) while the surfaces of the big-ends are treated with DLC. The pistons are forged aluminium for lightweight strength, durability and increased output.

To guarantee high-rpm wear resistance the piston skirts feature an Ober coating (Teflon and Molybdenum base) and nickel-phosphorous plating for the piston-pin clip-groove.

Managing temperature, the pistons themselves – now constructed from tougher material – use a multi-point piston jet which sprays cooling oil in multiple directions through each cycle. At low rpm (when not needed) check balls within the jets shut off the flow of oil in order to limit oil pressure loss and reduce friction. The oil ring features a new side rail barrel shape.

To reduce bore distortion (and thus friction), the cylinder features a built-in bottom bypass. This system circulates cool water from the radiator into the main water jacket, while the area below uses non-cooled water. The net effect is a lower, and more even, temperature at all points across the bores.

To minimise width, the engine is started by rotation of the clutch main shaft rather than the crankshaft. This design for a more compact crankshaft while double use of the primary driven gear (which itself has fewer teeth) to also transmit rotation from the starter motor saves space; the engine is short in length with short distances between the crankshaft, counter shaft and main shafts. The rear of the engine block also serves as upper shock mount; 250g has been shaved from the crankcase for 24YM.

Improving drive out of corners on track (and road), all of the gear ratios as well as the primary drive are now shorter.

Air is fed into the engine via a ram-air duct located at the high-surface pressure tip of the front fairing; the size of its aperture is equivalent to that of the RC213V MotoGP machine. A ribbed ‘turbulator’ to the right, left and above the duct entrance ensures maximum induction of moving air with minimal impact on handling. The draft angle of the aperture’s interior wall maintains flow under high-speed and acceleration.

To maintain stable performance across a wide speed range, pressurised air takes a straight shot through the headstock, around the steering stem and into the airbox. This smooth path is made possible by Honda’s Smart Key system and steering angle of 25°. To draw the volume of air needed the throttle bodies employ 52mm diameters.

The ‘dirty’ side of the air filter controls the direction of intake air separation and vortex generation, while on the ‘clean’ side, filtered air feeds slash-cut intake funnels. Mirroring the intake side, the four exhaust downpipes use an oval cross section.

Constructed from titanium, the Akrapovič muffler’s small physical size and light weight contribute to mass centralisation and right-side lean angle. It’s now 1L larger in volume; the exhaust valve was designed to deliver both low-rpm torque and high-rpm power – for 24YM the level of sound output has been reduced as the valve switches. 5dB quieter than the previous design, the exhaust note also rises linearly with engine rpm.

3.2 Engine Electronics

  • New 2-Motor Throttle By Wire system delivers smooth control for both acceleration and engine braking
  • 9-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) optimised for new power output character and gear ratios
  • 3 default riding modes plus options to customise the revised Power, Engine Brake, HSTC and Wheelie Control parameters
  • 4-level Start Mode standard fitment

The 17YM CBR1000RR was the first in-line four-cylinder engine from Honda to use Throttle By Wire (TBW). Derived and developed from the system used by the RC213V-S, it controls the throttle butterfly valve angle (relative to input from the throttle) to provide a linear delivery and puts precise throttle control – and a natural feel – in the rider’s right hand. It’s a critical area and in 22YM the TBW return spring load was reduced, further enhancing the response and linearity of throttle input.

To take the engine to the next level of control – and a first for a Honda – the TBW is now a 2-Motor system, 1 motor for cylinders 1 and 2, the other for 3 and 4. Through smaller throttle openings cylinders 1 and 2’s throttle valves open first to finely adjust output and generate crank rotation fluctuations. This makes the engine much easier to control and use through the lower rpm ranges. As revs climbs, all throttle valves open together, for a smooth rush of top-end power.

The other benefit of 2-Motor TBW is the amplification of engine braking. With the throttle fully closed during deceleration cylinders 3 and 4 open with the exhaust valve closed to increase the engine’s pumping loss – and therefore engine braking – while cylinders 1 and 2 are closed, ready to open smoothly on the next acceleration.

For the 9-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) another 22YM update improved feel. The gap between the intervention timing and slip rate control (which monitors the rate at which slip is changing based on the ratio of front/rear wheel speeds) – was changed to give much smoother, intuitive grip management, with software developed with wide-ranging, top-level feedback from around the world, including HRC’s riders. For 24YM the HSTC has been optimised for the engine’s new power output characteristics and revised gear ratios.

There are three default riding modes with options to change engine output and character. Power (P) operates through levels 1-5 with 1 giving ultimate outright power. Engine Brake (EB) manages performance on a closed throttle through levels 1-3, with 1 being the strongest engine braking delivered by the 2-Motor TBW; Wheelie (W) manages through levels 1-3 (plus off) with 1 giving the weakest intervention. All settings across the board have been revised for 24YM.

Wheelie Control uses information gathered by the IMU on the Fireblade SP’s pitch angle, along with front and rear wheel speed sensors to maintain torque and manage the wheelie without sacrificing forward drive.

The Fireblade SP is also equipped with Start Mode for race starts. It limits engine rpm at 6,000, 7,000, 8,000 and 9,000rpm set points, even with a wide-open throttle, letting the rider focus on clutch release (and lights) alone. The standard-fit 3-level quickshifter delivers razor-fast changes, with short fuel cut time while shifting and smoother torque pickup after shifting.

3.3 Chassis

  • Revised aluminium frame features new rigidity balance for enhanced steering accuracy and grip feel
  • Third generation Öhlins Smart Electronic Control (S-EC3.0) offers refined choice of settings, with new preload guide screen.
  • Öhlins 43mm NPX (SV) forks feature new Spool Valve internals, as does the TTX36 (SV) rear shock
  • New Brembo Stylema R radial-mount four-piston calipers managed by Cornering ABS now with 3 modes – STANDARD/TRACK/RACE
  • New riding position raises handlebars and lowers footpegs for increased rider freedom and control
  • Bosch six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) gives accurate calculation of dynamic behaviour
  • Showa’s 3-level Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD) controlled by IMU for stability management

The diamond-style main frame is constructed from 2mm aluminium with an extremely accurate tuning of the rigidity balance; in manufacture, after the four main frame components are welded, the engine mounts in six locations improving machine handling.

For 24YM internal ribbing has been removed, the thin wall area expanded and shaping optimised. A total 960g has been shaved from the frame, with a further 140g from shorter engine hanger bolts. But the main aim of the work is to adjust the rigidity balance for a more supple handling feel with razor-sharp steering accuracy; lateral stiffness is reduced 17%, with 15% less torsional stiffness.

Wheelbase is set at 1,455mm with rake and trail of 24°7’ / 101.9mm. Wet weight is 201kg. Weight distribution is balanced at 53%/47% while a high c-of-g improves side-to-side agility.

The swingarm – constructed from 18 individual thicknesses of aluminium and as used by the RC213V-S – is 622.7mm long. Its horizontal and vertical rigidity are tuned to generate grip and feel.

For optimum design integrity (and to save weight) the top mount of the Pro-Link rear shock attaches to the rear of the engine block via a bracket. This also isolates the rear wheel from the headstock, improving high-speed stability and feel for rear wheel traction.

Round, thin-wall aluminium tubing forms the minimal subframe. It also mounts to the frame from the top to narrow the area around the rear of the fuel tank and seat, making for a compact – and aerodynamically efficient – riding position. Seat height is 830mm, and the riding position has been subtly adjusted for 24YM to allow more freedom of control – the handlebars are 19mm higher – and 23mm closer – with footpegs set 16mm lower.

The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP is the first production bike in the world to feature the third generation Öhlins 43mm S-EC3.0 (SV) NPX USD forks.  Using an internal spool valve structure, they improve ride quality and turning stability through the suspension stroke. Feel for front tyre grip is also enhanced. The forks are clamped by exclusive forged aluminium top and bottom yokes and their length also offers greater freedom for geometry changes. Matching the race-quality front end is an Öhlins TTX36 S-EC3.0 (SV) rear shock.

In conjunction with the hardware, Öhlins Objective Based Tuning interface (OBTi)

offers much finer suspension adjustment front and rear; both can be set independently from the default settings and 3 individual modes can be set and stored, allowing the rider to configure multiple settings for conditions such as weather, tyre wear or fuel load – and to switch instantly while riding. A new feature is a front/rear spring preload guide, accessible via the meter, which recommends the correct setting for the rider’s weight.

New Brembo Stylema R four-piston radial mount brake calipers are operated by Brembo master cylinder and brake lever and offer consistently high braking performance at the high temperatures generated on track. They grip 330mm diameter/5mm thick diameter discs that dissipate heat efficiently. The rear brake caliper is the same Brembo unit used by the RC213V-S.

A Bosch six-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) delivers accurate calculation of pitch and roll for precise control of the bike’s behaviour. The Fireblade SP is also equipped with Showa’s Honda Electronic Steering Damper (HESD), a lightweight, through-rod design that mounts on the bottom of the steering stem and attaches to the bottom yoke. HESD is controlled by input from the wheel speed sensors and IMU; 3 levels of control are available.

Rear lift control and ABS-managed brake force relative to lean angle boost confidence on turn-in. New for 24YM the system features now features 3 switchable set ups; STANDARD mode focuses on road-riding performance, with high brake force and less pitching, while TRACK mode offers performance in braking from much higher circuit speeds and does not suppress rear lift. RACE mode switches off the rear ABS function completely, with no Cornering ABS input.

The rear 17-inch 5-spoke cast aluminium rim mounts a 200/55-ZR17 sized tyre, minimising the change in chassis geometry when going from street to track rubber. The front 5-spoke cast aluminium rim mounts a 120/70-ZR17 tyre.

3.4 Aerodynamic Package & Equipment

  • Redesigned middle fairing includes new winglet shaping for high-speed agility; lower fairing features rear aero step to improve rear traction feel
  • 5-inch colour TFT screen and four-way left-hand switch offer intuitive control of riding systems; redline now slides up rpm scale only when engine is at operating temperature
  • Fuel capacity increased to 16.5L
  • Smart Key operation adds convenience

An aggressive fairing design is no mere styling exercise: it’s designed to create a class-leading drag coefficient (with a tucked-in rider under track conditions) and restrict lift under acceleration while improving braking stability.

The fairing mid-section houses re-shaped, more forward-set winglets which now generate downforce – to reduce wheelies under acceleration and increase stability on braking and corner entry – with an aerodynamic frontal step. The new design reduces yaw moment through a corner by 10% to make high-speed turning easier.

To make steering easier a convex surface on each side of the front mudguard moves air flow away from the front wheel, smoothly directing it to the fairing sides. Cooling air for radiator and oil cooler is optimised by aerodynamic management of both velocity and pressure of air flowing from the tyre.

A new lower fairing design extends close to the rear tyre and now features an aerodynamic step to reduce airflow around the rear tyre improving handling.

To let air flow around the rider’s feet with minimum resistance the sides of the rear hugger are carefully shaped, while its upper side is cut-out to vent air that channels up from underneath either side of the swingarm, decreasing rear lift.

The fuel tank cover is set low, decreasing the frontal area with the rider prone. It’s been re-shaped to improve the rider’s knee grip and fuel capacity has been increased .4L to 16.5L. At a 35° angle the screen smoothly channels airflow from the upper fairing over the rider and seat cowl, which itself presents the minimum possible drag resistance.

For full and intuitive control of the Fireblade’s systems there’s a high resolution, full colour 5-inch TFT screen. It’s fully customisable to show exactly what the rider wants to see. The compact left-hand switchgear houses a four-way switch; fast and easy to use, the top/bottom buttons set riding mode parameters, while the left/right buttons cycle screen display information.

A new function – to protect the engine – moves the redline down to 8,000rpm on start up; as the coolant temperature reaches its operating zone the redline moves up to just over 14,000rpm.

Honda’s Smart Key System operates the ignition without having to insert a key, and the handlebar lock. This is both convenient in day-to-day use and allows use of a competition-style top yoke, with optimum space for the ram air system. The CBR1000RR-R Fireblade also features Emergency Stop Signal (ESS), that on sudden braking the rear indicators are activated to warn road users behind.

2024 Honda NX500

Honda’s A2-compatible mini-adventurer gets a new name – and even more rugged style – for 24YM. Power and torque remain the same for the 471cc engine – at 35kW and 43Nm – while an ECU update improves acceleration feel and Honda Selectable Torque Control is now standard. New wheels save 1.5kg of unsprung weight, adding to an overall weight loss of 3kg, and are matched by revised settings for the 41mm Showa SFF-BP USD forks and rear shock. Dual discs up front are worked by two piston calipers. A brand-new LED headlight opens up better visibility at night while a new 5-inch TFT screen offers Honda RoadSync smartphone connectivity, operated by a simplified and backlit 4-way toggle switch.

  1. Introduction

The CB500X, originally launched in 2013 alongside the naked CB500F (now CB500 Hornet) and fully faired CBR500R, injected crossover adventure style to Honda’s fun-focussed twin-cylinder ‘light middleweight’ trio.

Right from the start it was a motorcycle that, without fanfare, quietly got on with the job of being supremely competent and adaptable for a wide variety of owners.

The usefulness was down to a straightforward equation – a perky, well-regarded twin-cylinder engine which produced real torque and drive from low rpm while revving hard up top – plus a chassis that gave a supremely comfortable ride both around town and out on the open highway, all wrapped up in distinctive adventure styling.

It slipped between the role of short-hop commuter to weekend tourer effortlessly. Long travel suspension ironed out irregular road surfaces, wide handlebars provided leverage, and the upright riding position offered both comfort and a wide field of view for the rider.

In 2016 a first upgrade brought with it a larger fuel tank, more wind protection and taller screen, as well as LED lighting, spring preload-adjustable front forks and adjustable brake lever. The 19YM evolution delivered more sophisticated adventure style, more engine performance and a number of chassis upgrades. 22YM saw the addition of high-quality Showa 41mm SFF-BP USD forks, dual front discs, lightweight swingarm and redesigned front wheel.

For 24YM Honda’s equation for this bike is improving, but not changing in its essence. The name is new, however. The NX500 is carving out its own identity, with aggressively redesigned styling, premium technology and a variety of detail upgrades that are sure to continue its journey into the hearts and minds of European riders.

  1. Model Overview

The letters NX have quite a history with Honda and the single-cylinder NX650 Dominator – which debuted in the late 1980s with unique mix of road and off-road style – is fondly remembered across Europe.

NX means ‘New X-over’ which is exactly what the new NX500 is. Fun on a winding road, fun on a gravel trail and ready to go the distance, its all-round credentials are reinforced with an impressive update to its adventure styling. The wheels too are lighter, and the suspension settings front and rear have been upgraded to improve ride quality.

The A2-compliant, slipper clutch-equipped twin-cylinder engine benefits from the addition of Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC) as well as ECU updates to improve acceleration.

The 24YM NX500 will be available in the following colour options:

Grand Prix Red

Matt Gunpowder Black Metallic

Pearl Horizon White

  1. Key Features

3.1 Styling & Equipment

  • Sharp new adventure style incorporates aerodynamics to improve stability at speed
  • New LED headlight and taillight
  • New 5-inch full colour TFT screen includes Honda RoadSync connectivity for on-screen turn-by-turn navigation and access to other smartphone functions
  • New, simplified left hand switchgear easy to use and backlit for night-time

Directed by the design theme of ‘Daily Crossover’, wherever it goes – city block, winding road, highway or gravel trail – the NX500 looks the part, wearing new style that mixes compact adventure-style usability with an imposing silhouette and solidity of form

A new LED headlight design maintains beam penetration but throws out wider light distribution for increased visibility when riding – and cornering – at night. It’s matched to a new LED taillight. All other lighting is also LED.

Premium technology – in the form of a brand new, 5-inch full colour TFT screen inherited from the XL750 Transalp – uses optical bonding to improve visibility in bright sunlight, a first for a Honda motorcycle. By sealing the gap between the cover glass and TFT screen with resin glare is reduced, and backlight transmittance improved. It’s customisable between Bar, Circle and Simple display patterns and also offers the IOS/Android smartphone connectivity of Honda RoadSync.

This new feature – alongside a simplified, easy-to-use, backlit 4-way toggle-switch on the left handlebar – allows straightforward, on-screen turn-by-turn navigation as well as the option (via a Bluetooth helmet headset) for the rider to make calls or listen to music. All an owner has to do is download the Honda RoadSync app from the Play Store or the App Store, connect to the NX500, and go.

A slim seat profile allows for free movement around the machine and aids easy ground reach and, to help manoeuvrability, the steering angle is 38° from centred to full lock.

Gunmetal grey tapered steel handlebar elevate control further still. Seat height is 830mm and the upright riding position is very accommodating, while providing excellent visibility. Overall dimensions are 2,165mm x 830mm x 1,415mm, with 180mm ground clearance.

The fuel tank holds 17.5L including reserve, and, combined with the engine’s excellent fuel economy of 3.6L/100km (27.8km/l) (WMTC mode), gives a range of over 480km.

3.2 Chassis

  • 41mm Showa Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks and rear shock feature fine-tuned settings
  • New, lighter weight wheels
  • Dual 296mm discs, Nissin axial mount two piston calipers

Light, strong and unchanged for 24YM, the 35mm diameter steel diamond-tube mainframe has a tuned degree of yield that gives plenty of feedback to the rider as road surfaces change. The shape and position of the engine mounts, plus the frame’s rigidity balance, keep vibration to a minimum.

Wheelbase is 1,445mm with rake and trail of 27.5°/108mm and front/rear bias percentage of 48.7/51.3. Kerb weight is 196kg – 3kg lighter than the CB500X.

Showa 41mm Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) USD forks divide the functions – Big Piston pressure separation damper in one leg, spring mechanism in the other – and reaction and ride quality are top draw. They feature 135mm axle travel (150mm cushion stroke) and have new spring rate and damping settings to improve reaction and feel for both road and off-road riding.

The single-tube shock absorber, with 135mm axle travel (60mm cushion stroke) has new settings to match the front and its large-diameter piston ensures excellent temperature management; it offers 5-stage preload adjustment. Constructed from 2mm steel, the swingarm employs a hollow cross member – it is stiff rotationally and flexible laterally to improve handling.

Completely new are the cast aluminium wheels. Going from a conventional Y-shaped 7-spoke design to Y-shaped 5-spokes saves 800g front and 700g rear. This reduction of unsprung weight works with the revised suspension settings to improve handling and feel in all situations. The 19-inch front is matched to a 17-inch rear; trail-pattern tyres are sized 110/80-R19 and 160/60-R17.

Dual 296mm front discs are worked by Nissin axial mount, two-piston calipers; the rear 240mm disc a single-piston caliper.

3.3 Engine

  • Lively twin-cylinder powerplant now equipped with Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC)
  • New PGM-FI settings improve low-rpm acceleration and power delivery across the rev-range
  • Assist/slipper clutch eases upshifts and manages rear wheel through downshifts

The A2-licence friendly 471cc, 8-valve liquid-cooled parallel twin-cylinder layout offers a well-proportioned balance of physical size and willing, enjoyable power output, with an energetic, high-revving character and zappy top end. And it’s very much an engine whose overall performance and character belie its relatively small capacity; peak power of 35kW arrives at 8,600rpm, with 43Nm torque delivered at 6,500rpm.

A 24YM addition is HSTC to manage rear wheel traction for increased peace of mind and a real boost for rider confidence. The system compares front and rear wheel speeds to detect rear slip and controls the fuel injection to smoothly reduce torque. HSTC can also be turned off completely if the rider wishes.

Feeding the PGM-FI fuel injection is a more-or-less straight shot of airflow through the airbox and throttle bodies. Optimisation of ignition timing and air/fuel ratio equals more powerful acceleration feel from low rpm, with linear power delivery and throttle feel. The exhaust muffler features dual exit pipes, giving a sporting edge to each pulse, and a rasping high-rpm howl.

Bore and stroke are set at 67mm x 66.8mm and compression ratio is 10.7:1; the crankshaft pins are phased at 180° and a primary couple-balancer sits behind the cylinders, close to the bike’s centre of gravity. The primary and balancer gears use scissor gears, reducing noise. The crank counterweight is specifically shaped for couple-balance and its light weight allows the engine to spin freely, with reduced inertia.

Acting as a stressed member, the engine complements the frame’s rigidity with four frame hangers. Internally the cylinder head uses roller rocker arms; shim-type valve adjustment allows them to be light, for lower valve-spring load and reduced friction.

A silent (SV Chain) cam chain has the surface of its pins treated with Vanadium, reducing friction with increased protection against wear. Inlet valve diameter is 26.0mm with exhaust valve diameter of 21.5mm. Piston shape is carefully designed to reduce piston ‘noise’ at high rpm. Friction is reduced by striations on the piston skirt (a finish that increases surface area, introducing gaps in which oil can flow for better lubrication).

The ‘triangle’ proportion of crankshaft, main shaft and countershaft is efficiently compact and the crankcases employ centrifugally cast thin-walled sleeves; their internal design reduces the ‘pumping’ losses that can occur with a 180° phased firing order. A deep sump reduces oil movement under hard cornering and braking; oil capacity is 3.2L.

A slick-changing six-speed gearbox is managed by an assist/slipper clutch, eliminating rear wheel ‘hop’ under hard braking and downshifting.

New Honda CB1000 Hornet, return of the CBR600RR and innovative Honda E-Clutch

New CB1000 Hornet, return of the CBR600RR and innovative Honda E-Clutch headline Honda’s full 24YM European line-up reveal at EICMA.

Today at EICMA in Milan, Honda unveiled its full 24YM line-up, featuring four new model names, significant upgrades to a further four models – two of which will be available with a world-first motorcycle technology – and a concept version of the next all-electric vehicle destined to join Honda’s uniquely broad and varied range.

New CB1000 Hornet
Headlining the unveiling is the introduction of the new head of Honda’s growing Hornet family – the CB1000 Hornet.

The new flagship naked will be powered by a retuned version of the in-line four-cylinder powerplant from the 2017YM CBR1000RR Fireblade, that delivers peak power of over 110kW and more than 100Nm of torque.

Wrapping the engine is an all-new steel twin spar frame that will offer a unique blend of dynamic cornering performance and stability, via Showa 41mm Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) suspension adjustable for both compression and rebound, matched to a Pro-link rear Showa shock.

The styling is pure and aggressive. Led by the piercing gaze of super-compact dual LED projector headlights, the Hornet-signature fuel tank – with wings folded forward – is broad shouldered up front but tapers radically to the rear, mirrored by the minimal seat unit that underlines the traditional narrow-waisted Hornet look. The new frame is also used as a design feature, but subtly blacked out – like the tubular trellis-style rear subframe.

Electronic aids will run via Throttle By Wire and allow the rider to choose between 3 riding modes, displayed on the 5-inch TFT colour display; connectivity is available for both Android and iOS devices via Honda RoadSync.

New CB500 Hornet
The Hornet family will have a new third member in Honda’s 24YM line-up – the CB500 Hornet, which brings new, aggressive styling inspired by its two bigger siblings, and aerodynamic performance that befit the iconic Hornet name.

The CB500 Hornet’s fairing incorporates headlight side ducts that channel air to the upper fuel tank area, contributing to a linear steering feel with outstanding handling agility. A new LED throws its light out wider for increased visibility.

Power and torque for the 471cc engine meet maximum A2 licence requirements – at 35kW and 43Nm – while updated fuel injection settings improve acceleration feel from low down, and the CB500 Hornet now features HSTC for increased peace of mind.

The high-quality chassis specification includes 41mm Showa SFF-BP USD forks, Showa rear shock and dual discs up front with four-piston calipers, while a new 5-inch TFT screen offers Honda RoadSync smartphone connectivity.

New CBR600RR
After a six-year absence from Honda’s European line-up, the much-loved – and razor-sharp –  CBR600RR returns for 24YM to reinvigorate the middleweight super sports category. Loaded with cutting-edge MotoGP-inspired electronics and aerodynamics, the new CBR600RR is a free-revving four-cylinder motorcycling gem powered by an engine substantially upgraded from its previous incarnation to deliver peak power of 89kW at 14,250rpm and 63Nm of torque at 11,500rpm.

The sweet-handling chassis package deliver both instant changes of direction and stability through its twin-spar aluminium frame with aluminium swingarm, 41mm Showa Big Piston USD front forks, Unit Pro-Link Showa rear shock and fairings featuring MotoGP-derived winglets.

The CBR600RR’s new comprehensive electronics package benefits from the use of a 6-axis Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU), as found in the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade, and includes Throttle By Wire control, 5 Riding Modes, Cornering ABS, 9-level Honda Selectable Torque Control (HSTC), Wheelie Control, Rear Lift Control and Emergency Stop Signals. Honda Electronic Steering Damper, an assist/slipper clutch and quickshifter are also standard fit.

New NX500
The iconic ‘NX’ designation returns to Honda’s line-up in the form of the new NX500.

Meaning ‘New X-over’, the NX500 is designed to be enjoyed on everything from a winding road to a gravel trail or long-distance adventure. Building on the popularity of the outgoing CB500X, it features new styling and a range of specification and performance upgrades.

Handling dynamics and feel are improved thanks to a 3 kilogram reduction (1.5kg of which comes from new lightweight 5-spoke cast aluminium wheels) in kerb weight to 196kg, revised spring rate and damping for the Showa 41mm Separate Function Fork Big Piston (SFF-BP) upside down forks, and sharper acceleration thanks to new fuel injection settings.

Further spec upgrades come in the form of a new 5-inch TFT screen, Honda RoadSync smartphone connectivity and HSTC. Led by a new headlight, the styling is completely refreshed, with new plastics from front to back mixing compact adventure-style usability with an imposing silhouette and solidity of form.

CBR500R
The gateway machine to Honda’s CBR super sports family is also significantly upgraded for 24YM.

Crisp and comprehensively updated, the Fireblade-inspired styling includes new headlight and taillight, plus revised bodywork featuring winglets for improved front end feel. New graphics and colours amplify the CBR500R’s ‘baby Blade’ look and new fuel injection settings improve low rpm acceleration.

The new 5-inch full colour TFT screen is operated by easy-to-use backlit switchgear, and is the interface for the new connectivity of Honda RoadSync.

CB650R and CBR650R
Honda’s CB650R naked middleweight and its sibling, the CBR650R, both receive a style refresh and new technology for 24YM.

The CB650R’s Neo Sports Café unique look has evolved to make it a sinuous, more dynamic and purposeful-looking machine. Led from the front by the new slanted LED headlight, it features new radiator shrouds and a sharper new rear fairing complete with new taillight.

For its CBR sibling, redesigned dual LED headlights are matched with updated upper and lower fairings that, along with the redesigned tail unit, combine muscularity with slim lines and attractive angles to ramp up the CBR650R’s pure sporting appeal.

Both bikes feature Honda RoadSync connectivity a new 5-inch full colour TFT screen designed for optimal readability on bright days.

Honda E-Clutch
The CB650R and CBR650R are also the first Honda motorcycles to be available with the innovative Honda E-Clutch technology, the world’s first fully automatic clutch for a multi-geared motorcycle, designed to make motorcycling, from beginner right through to expert, even more enjoyable and exciting.

Honda E-Clutch takes away the need to use the clutch lever to make a shift either up or down the gearbox. The rider simply has to operate the shift pedal for ultra-fast, consistent gear changes, exactly as if using a quickshifter. During the gear change, it uses a harmonised combination of ‘half-clutch’ operation, fuel injection cut and ignition control to eliminate shift shock for an ultra-smooth ride.

The clutch lever is also not needed when pulling away or coming to a stop. Becoming active as soon as the engine is switched on, the Honda E-Clutch system manages both scenarios smoothly, and if the rider desires, they are able to operate the clutch lever as normal. Should the rider want to turn off the system for a particular ride, this is also possible via the instrument panel.

CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP
24YM sees the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade and its SP version drive further up their development curve with a host of engine and gearbox updates that produce a major mid-range performance boost and improved throttle response.

Harnessing a huge amount of HRC development and knowhow, the delivery of the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP’s 113Nm torque and 160kW has been substantially changed to generate even more corner exit acceleration alongside its prodigious top-end power. This is further heightened by new shorter gear ratios and primary drive, redesigned middle fairing with new winglets plus a revised, lighter and more pliant frame.

The addition of 2-Motor Throttle By Wire increases part-throttle control and also allows amplified engine braking. Lighter crankcases, crankshaft and conrods, together with revised valve timing and raised compression ratio, ensure that the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade SP draws more performance from every combustion cycle, while changes to the standard fit Akrapovič muffler reduce exhaust volume by 5dB..

The SP version of the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade is the first bike in the world to use the new, third generation Öhlins Smart Electronic 43mm S-EC3.0 (SV) NPX USD forks. It also features a digital spring preload guide via the instrument panel, which has been developed to allow riders a clear and easy way to set their Fireblade up perfectly. New Brembo Stylema R four-piston radial mount brake calipers offer consistently high braking performance.

CRF1100L Africa Twin and Africa Twin Adventure Sports
EICMA will also mark the public debut of the 24YM CRF1100L Africa Twin and its Adventure Sports variant, which carry a series of performance and practical updates for 24YM.

Both models benefit from a 7% increase in maximum torque – delivered 750rpm earlier in the rpm range – thanks to changes in compression ratio, valve timing, intake ports and ECU settings. Revisions to the Dual Clutch Transmission gearbox bring earlier downshifts to match the new engine performance, improved cornering detection and a more natural feel on initial take off and between first and second gears.

Practicality is improved with the addition of tubeless tyres for easier roadside repair, and a larger, 5 way adjustable screen.

The CRF1100L Africa Twin itself will now be available for the first time with the option of Showa Electronically Equipped Ride Adjustment (Showa EERA), which offers optimised damping in all riding conditions, as well as the ability to change rear spring preload on the move via the 6.5in touchscreen display.

The road-going capabilities of the CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports are heightened by a new 19” front wheel and wider front tyre, plus more weather protection from a broader front fairing and the larger screen, plus greater comfort from the more thickly-padded seat.

SC e: Concept
Also on display at Honda’s EICMA stand is the SC e: Concept, a concept version of the company’s second electric two-wheeler for European customers, following the arrival to key markets of the EM1 e: electric moped in 2023.

The SC e: Concept features distinctive, ultra-modern design lines, large flat floor and long wide seat. It will be equipped with two of the swappable Honda Mobile Power Pack e: batteries for a longer riding range, supporting customers looking for emission-free, quiet, compact urban mobility with the added benefit of being able to recharge in the comfort of home.

The ‘SC’ stands for scooter, meaning anyone with an A1 licence will be able to ride the mass production version which is due to arrive by 2025.

Tom Gardner, Senior Vice President, Honda Motor Europe, Ltd.
“Following the resounding sales success of the new Hornet and Transalp in 2023, which has helped grow our sales volume by over 30%, the addition of four more new model names and significant upgrades to flagships like the Africa Twin and Fireblade promise another bright year ahead in 2024.

We continue to enhance and enrich our range with the arrival of the beautiful new CB1000 Hornet, the return of the much-loved CBR600RR and the addition – for the CB650R and CBR650R – of the unique Honda E-Clutch, which marks another world first for Honda.

Alongside this, it’s exciting for us to be introducing the SC e: Concept, which will go into production by 2025, and is a sure-footed next step on the electrification journey for our two-wheeled line-up.”

Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono: the new benchmark for road Supermotards

In the fifth episode of the Ducati World Première web series 2024, Ducati revealed to the public the new Hypermotard 698 Mono, the first Ducati single-cylinder Supermotard.

The Hypermotard 698 Mono was created with the sole objective of thrilling through the curves, between the curbs of the tracks but also in the city, transforming every move into the most fun moment of the day. An objective achieved by applying technical solutions derived from the world of the Panigale for the engine, electronics and chassis to a new segment for Ducati, thus creating a motorbike capable of providing unforgettable emotions once on the saddle.

The Hypermotard 698 Mono is in fact designed and built to achieve maximum performance on asphalt and is equipped with the new Superquadro Mono, the most sophisticated and high-performance single-cylinder road engine ever made. A record-breaking engine thanks to the maximum power of 77.5 hp and the 10,250 rpm maximum rotation which constitute new benchmarks for the category. This engine derives from the twin-cylinder of the 1299 Panigale, from which it inherits the 116 mm bore piston, combustion chamber, titanium intake and steel exhaust valves and Desmodromic distribution, the same solution that Ducati uses in MotoGP.

Its electronic package, unrivalled in the category, allows the less experienced to learn to ride like a Supermotard rider, supported by ABS Cornering which for this bike boasts settings specifically developed to manage “sideways riding” on the track.

The same package allows more experienced riders to fully exploit the high power of the Superquadro Mono engine and the stable and rigorous chassis. The Hypermotard 698 Mono combines the precision of the front end of Ducati sports bikes with the typical nimbleness of Supermotards, for easy, intuitive and above all fun riding like a fun bike should have. This balance was achieved thanks to chassis dimensions that allow for a more neutral and communicative front end compared to motorcycles derived from the offroad world, which are typically more understeering.

Added to all this is a design that enhances the presence of the new Superquadro Mono engine and which combines the distinctive traits of racing Supermotards such as simplicity, aggressiveness and visual lightness with the cleanliness and sophistication of the surfaces to which Ducatisti are now accustomed.Unmistakable Ducati style
The new Hypermotard 698 Mono combines a typically Supermotard racing aesthetic, essential, compact and aggressive, with the clean lines and attention to surfaces typical of Ducati design.

The result is a slim and sleek motorcycle. The superstructures reduced to a minimum immediately communicate Ducati sportiness and enhance the vertical development of the new Superquadro Mono. The high and flat seat, the high front mudguard, the sharp tail and the rear number plates are all elements that confirm its attitude.

In line with Ducati style, the five-spoke alloy wheels with a “Y” design combine a sporty look with the advantage of lightness. Another unique element are the double silencers mounted at the top, on the sides of the tail, a distinctive element of the Hypermotard family as well as the racing Supermotards. The super compact LED headlight integrates the DRL function with a double “C” light profile and makes the Hypermotard 698 Mono a motorcycle that does not go unnoticed. The same light signature is found in the rear position light.

The fun-bike personality of the Hypermotard 698 Mono emerges clearly in the RVE version, characterised by the dedicated ‘Graffiti’ livery. This colouring was created with the use of water decals with the aim of obtaining refined and complex graphics inspired by works of street art.

Superquadro Mono engine
The Ducati Hypermotard 698 Mono debuts the new Superquadro Mono, the latest addition to the Borgo Panigale engines which presents itself as a new performance benchmark among single-cylinder road bikes.

Powerful, light and compact, it comes from the most powerful and refined twin-cylinder ever created by Ducati: the 1,285 cc Superquadro of the 1299 Panigale. It retains the 116 mm bore of that engine, a record value for a road single-cylinder, combined with a stroke of 62.4 mm for a displacement of 659 cc, and highly sophisticated solutions.

The box-in-box piston, the titanium intake valves, the aluminium cylinder liner, the piston pin equipped with DLC coating and naturally Desmodromic distribution make the Superquadro Mono capable of revving at speeds normally reserved only for racing single cylinders (the limiter is set at 10,250 rpm) and delivers a maximum power of 77.5 hp at 9,750 rpm.

The torque, whose maximum value is 6.4 kgm at 8,000 rpm, is distributed in a particularly favourable manner, resulting in linear delivery that can be exploited in sports riding. Furthermore, thanks to the Termignoni racing exhaust, in track configuration the power increases by 7 horsepower reaching the incredible value of 84.5 hp, another record for a single-cylinder.Electronics
The standard electronic equipment of the Hypermotard 698 Mono is the most complete in its category and includes many of the controls present on the Panigale V4, developed specifically for this bike. There are ABS Cornering, Ducati Traction Control, Ducati Wheelie Control, Engine Brake Control, Ducati Power Launch and Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up/Down, which can be purchased as an accessory for the standard version and is supplied as standard on the RVE version.

The goal is always the same: to increase riding fun. And with the Hypermotard 698 Mono, less experienced riders will be able to approach Motard-style riding with the certainty of being able to count on sophisticated electronics.

The Hypermotard 698 Mono has four riding modes (Sport, Road, Urban and Wet) to which the Engine Mode (available on 3 levels), DTC, EBC and ABS levels are assigned by default, which can be modified by the rider. Everything is managed by the 3.8″ LCD instrumentation with white characters on a black background to ensure the readability of the information. As on the Panigale V4, the Hypermotard 698 Mono also features an indication of gear change and when the limiter is reached.

The Hypermotard 698 Mono is the first Ducati to offer four levels of ABS. Two of these integrate the Slide-by-Brake functionality, which through the use of the rear brake allows safe and repeatable cornering when powersliding in sporty riding on the track.

With the ABS set to level 3, when using the rear brake during aggressive braking on the track, the Slide-by-Brake activates, allowing the bike a contained yaw angle that is easier to manage. Just brake, start entering the corner and the electronics will take care of the rest. This level was developed for less experienced riders on the track who want to start approaching sideways riding when entering corners. With this level of Slide-by-Brake, rear powerslides become more easily controllable, leaving room for fun.

When ABS is set to level 2, Slide-by-Brake allows for a wider sideways angle and more pronounced powerslides into the corner. This level was developed for sporting use on the track for those who already have experience with powerslides but want to be able to count on the safety offered by the ABS system.

For more experienced riders who want to independently manage powerslides when entering corners on the track, level 1 is available in which the ABS, not Cornering, is active only on the front.

Finally, the ABS of the Hypermotard 698 Mono also has level 4, developed for low-grip situations to guarantee maximum stability and safety. It is associated by default with Wet Riding Mode.

The bike offers 4 levels of Wheelie Control. Levels 4, 3 and 2 ensure maximum acceleration out of corners while minimising lift from the front wheel. Level 1, however, was developed for use on the track and allows controlled and safe lifting of the front, maximising both performance and fun.

Furthermore, exclusively for use on the track, the Ducati Performance software for Ducati Wheelie Control is available as an accessory. This functionality can be activated only in association with the Termignoni Ducati Performance exhaust, not street-legal, and provides an additional assistance strategy called Wheelie Assist. In this case the electronics assist the rider in executing and maintaining a prolonged wheelie, regulating the angle using the engine torque delivered.

Chassis and ergonomics
The Hypermotard 698 Mono is compact and lightweight, with a curb weight of 151 kg without fuel. A result obtained thanks to solutions such as the trellis frame with differentiated sections and thicknesses weighing only 7.2 kg, capable of combining strength with rigidity and lightness, to the cast rims (-0.5 kg compared to similar spoked wheels), to the brake discs with aluminium flange (-17% compared to a steel unit) and to the lightweight Marzocchi fork, fully adjustable and equipped with external adjusters, with upside-down front forks and 45 mm aluminium sliders, weighing only 8.1 kg.
The double-sided swingarm, light and essential, works via a progressive linkage with a fully adjustable rear shock absorber. The rims are fitted with Pirelli Diablo Rosso IV tyres, measuring 120/70 ZR 17 at the front and 160/60 ZR 17 at the rear.

The front braking system relies on a single 330 mm disc developed specifically by Brembo for the Hypermotard 698 Mono, with Brembo M4.32 radial caliper. At the rear there is a single 240 mm disc, also with a dedicated design.
The riding position is designed to guarantee maximum control in sports riding, supporting both traditional riding with the leg stretched towards the ground and that with the knee on the ground. The variable section handlebar determines a dominant position, favouring body movements. The advancement is adjustable through eccentric U-bolts.

The design of the footrests is studied to maximise the lean angle. Furthermore, by removing the rubber inserts it is possible to obtain maximum grip with racing boots when used on the track thanks to a specific processing of the edge. The extremely slim upper structure of the bike and the flat saddle covered with an optimised grip fabric facilitate body and leg movements.
Accessories
Enthusiasts who wish to exploit the high performance of the Hypermotard 698 Mono on the circuit will find various proposals in the Ducati Performance catalogue, starting from the Termignoni racing exhaust, racing seat, motard footrests, as well as sliders and protective covers for the engine crankcases.

There are also different carbon fibre components, which help to lighten the Ducati single-cylinder and make it more aggressive: from the front panel to the heat shield for the exhaust manifold, up to a homologated muffler in titanium and carbon fibre. Finally, those who want to embellish the aesthetics will find various parts in aluminium machined from solid, such as brake and clutch levers, the relative reservoirs or the fuel cap, and dynamic direction indicators.

Yamaha’s 2024 MT-09 SP: A Deeper Level of Darkness

Ten years ago, Yamaha changed the game with the introduction of a radical new machine which kick-started the Hyper Naked revolution and changed everything in the world of motorcycling.

The three-cylinder MT-09 was a bike like no other. Deviating from the norms of Japanese motorcycle design, this new model sought its inspiration from the edgy and dynamic motorcycle urban sub-culture found on the streets of Japan’s largest cities – the Dark Side of Japan.

The result was a bold and exciting machine that stimulated the senses with every twist of the throttle, introducing another dimension to riding and the start of a new era for Yamaha.

Over 385,000 MT models have been sold across Europe since, each and every one of them inspiring motorcycle riders from young to old with their exhilarating torque-rich performance and aggressive, edgy styling.

The New MT-09: Sharper, Purer, More Refined
The MT-09 marks its 10th anniversary with a comprehensive new bodywork intended to amplify the feeling of the CP3’s iconic torquey acceleration.

The styling concept behind the MT-09 has always been that of ‘functional beauty’, eliminating unnecessary features and embodying a ‘less is more’ approach. Each detail has been re-considered to reinforce the MT-09’s pure aggression and maximise an engaged riding experience.

And for those seeking a refined, ultimate Dark Side of Japan experience, the new MT-09 SP takes the already exceptional MT-09 platform even further with a higher specification including upgraded suspension and brakes, an exclusive look and finish plus track-focused technology and electronics.

Superior Darkness: 2024 MT-09 SP
Additional Track Focused YRC Settings
For 2024, the MT-09 features new Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) modes which allow riders to maximise the performance of the 890cc CP3 engine by selecting engine power characteristics and altering the degree of assistance from the various electronic aids (Traction Control System, Slide Control System etc.).

Riders can choose from SPORT, STREET and RAIN modes with the option to fine tune two further CUSTOM settings.

The MT-09 SP exclusively features the addition of TRACK modes to the YRC settings, enabling the rider to customise four extra patterns to suit certain track scenarios, for example a specific circuit or track conditions.

The individual TRACK modes allow for more refined, specialised settings, including the option of choosing between two Engine Brake Management (EBM) settings and the ability to alter the level of Brake Control (BC). Additionally, riders also have the option of turning the rear ABS off to further enhance on track performance.

Each mode can be altered and set directly in the dashboard menu or using the free MyRide app on a smartphone before being sent to the MT-09 SP, where riders can switch between each mode effortlessly using the newly designed switchgear.

The on-track riding experience is further enhanced by a dedicated SP-exclusive TRACK theme for the MT-09 SP’s new 5″ full colour TFT display, offering information such as a lap timer and other track-focused details.

Brembo Stylema Calipers
The superior specification of the MT-09 SP is designed to further amplify the exhilarating performance both on the road and on the track.

The introduction of new Brembo monoblock ‘Stylema’ calipers refines braking performance with the very latest technology from the famous Italian firm.

The ‘Stylema’ calipers feature a slimmer piston and brake pad area compared to conventional calipers, as well as being lighter, more rigid and offering enhanced control in braking input. In addition, larger-diameter pistons are adopted for increased braking forces, allowing MT-09 SP riders to experience the next level in braking performance.

Upgraded Fully Adjustable Suspension
SP-exclusive premium suspension, front and rear, brings Supersport-level handling and precision to the Hyper Naked class.

The gold-finish DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated, 41mm KYB forks and Öhlins monoshock feature a higher spring rate, offering outstanding stability during more spirited, sporty riding. In addition, the damping characteristics have been refined to enhance the comfort of the ride.

The higher specification KYB forks offer full adjustability for preload, re-bound and compression dampening allowing SP riders the option to fine-tune their set-up to suit a variety of different riding situations.

The Öhlins monoshock completes the MT-09 SP’s high-end suspension package, offering full adjustability for compression and re-bound damping as well as being equipped with a remote preload adjuster to enable quick and easy changes.

Smart Key System
Yamaha’s SP models are renowned for taking the next leap in technological advancement and the MT-09 SP becomes the first Hyper Naked to feature Yamaha’s Smart Key System.

The engine is started by pressing and turning the newly designed main switch, provided that the smart key is within a specified range such as in the rider’s pocket. The all-new switch also features a lock and unlock option for the fuel tank cap, further simplifying the riding experience through the ability to turn the bike on, off and re-fuel at the twist of a switch.

Exclusive R1M-inspired Icon Performance Colours
In line with keeping one eye on the track, the MT-09 SP features the exclusive silver, black and Yamaha Racing blue Icon Performance livery on the fuel tank and air-intakes to offer an even more aggressive and exclusive look. The Supersport-inspired colourway reinforces the MT-09 SP’s sporty character and highlights the close technological links to the R1M – the most advanced high-performance production Yamaha ever built.

The high quality, premium finish is exemplified by the classy, brushed aluminium swingarm, exclusive to the MT-09 SP.

Celebrating 30 years of Yamaha eBikes

Back in 1993, many years of research and development by Yamaha finally came to fruition when the company revealed a new kind of bike featuring its innovative Power Assist System (PAS). Consisting of an electric motor powered by a battery and equipped with a computerised controller linked to torque and speed sensors, the Yamaha PAS was the world’s very first production eBike. Aimed at commuters and shoppers in the Japanese market, the original Yamaha PA26 was the beginning of a new era in zero-emission powered transport that would ignite the whole eBike movement.

Yamaha: The eBike pioneer

Since 1993 Yamaha has pioneered the development of every aspect of the eBike, including drive units, electronic control technologies, batteries, interfaces and chassis designs. At the same time as producing complete eBikes for the Japanese market, Yamaha has also been supplying eBike System kits to major European bike manufacturers since 2013.

In 2018 Yamaha launched its range of eBikes into the global market starting in the USA and entered selected European markets in 2022 with three new models: the MORO 07 eMTB, Wabash RT gravel eBike and CrossCore RC do-it-all urban eBike. Thirty years since producing the world’s original eBike, Yamaha is established as one of the most innovative brands in this rapidly expanding market that is transforming daily life for commuters and adding an exciting new dimension for leisure and sport riders.

Exclusive new Factory Silver MORO 07 30th anniversary model

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the world’s first production eBike, Yamaha announces the launch of the special limited-edition MORO 07 in exclusive Factory Silver colour.

Its innovative Dual Twin frame features a high-quality Factory Silver finish that echoes the style of Yamaha’s YZ motocross models that have been winning World Championships for half a century. Just like motocross racers, MTB riders are constantly pushing the limits on challenging terrain, and this special MORO 07 is aimed at customers who appreciate Yamaha’s advanced chassis and drive unit technology.

Blue accents on the new Factory Silver MORO 07 underline the technology crossover between the YZ motocross bikes and this premium eMTB, and dedicated graphics highlight the 30th anniversary of Yamaha’s pioneering Power Assist System that launched an exciting new era for every bike rider.

Yamaha MORO 07: Ride without limits

Developed with 30 years of experience in the design and manufacture of innovative eBikes, MORO 07 is Yamaha’s premium eMTB. Inspired by Yamaha’s Grand Prix-winning motocross machines, its unique Dual Twin frame cages the battery and shock – and the high-specification RockShox suspension provides confident and responsive handling on all types of terrain. Offering the best torque-to-weight ratio, the compact PW-X3 drive unit and lightweight aluminium chassis ensure smooth and powerful performance on the most challenging mountain single track.

PW-X3 drive unit for instant power

Developing 85 Nm and weighing just 2.75 kg, the new generation PW-X3 drive unit gives an outstanding torque-to-weight ratio and provides high power at a high cadence for strong performance on steep hills and in sandy or muddy terrain.

Yamaha’s Zero Cadence technology delivers instant power delivery at the slightest pedal input – and specially developed gears and freewheels give a lightweight and natural feeling when pedalling over 25 km/h.

Unique Dual Twin frame

The unique Dual Twin frame features dual top tubes and down tubes that are designed to give a finely tuned rigidity balance that delivers confident handling together with plenty of accurate surface feedback.

This innovative chassis has been holistically developed alongside the powerful and compact PW-X3 drive unit, enabling Yamaha’s engineers to achieve idealised chassis dimensions with excellent ground clearance and a compact wheelbase.

Premium equipment

The Yamaha PW-X3 drive unit’s small physical size has also enabled the design of an innovative new 150 mm travel rear suspension system with RockShox Super Deluxe Select + mounted between the twin top tubes. RockShox LYRIK SELECT Charger forks offer 160mm travel for sure-footed front suspension action, and Maxxis 27.5 x 2.6-inch tyres give the traction and flex needed for effective riding together with a high degree of surface feel. Magura MT5 brakes deliver power with feel, and the premium Shimano XT 1 x 12 gearset ensures smooth shifting and effective drive.

Interface X with Smartphone connectivity

The Yamaha Interface X enables smartphone connectivity and gives a tidy handlebar area. Its minimalist design with ergonomic mode assist buttons and colour-coded assist mode indicator enable the MORO 07 rider to concentrate fully on the terrain ahead.

New colours for 2024 Honda ADV350, Forza 125 and Forza 350

Three of Honda’s most popular European models receive striking new colour updates for 24YM.

The ADV350 will be available in four new contemporary colours: Matt Coal Black Metallic, Pearl Falcon Gray, Matt Pearl Cool White and Matt Pearl Pacific Blue.

Introduced in 22YM, the ADV350 mixes the sophistication of a premium scooter with the ability to deal with the roughest of tarmac and comes wrapped in rugged adventure styling. Taking its style inspiration directly from the X-ADV, the ADV350 features motorcycle-style USD forks, tubular steel frame, remote reservoir rear shocks, ample ground clearance, underseat storage space for two full-face helmets, plus a USB charging port and the convenience of Smart Key operation. The screen is height-adjustable and the LCD instrument panel integrates with Honda RoadSync to keep riders connected while on the move.

This combination of unique styling, practicality and versatility made the ADV350 Honda’s best-selling model over 125cc in 2022, a position occupied by the CB750 Hornet in 2023, closely followed by the ADV350.

Both Honda’s smaller Forza scooters also receive new colours for 2024. The Forza name has long been a powerful force in Honda’s two-wheeled line-up, offering a premium mix of sporty and GT elements. Last year, the Forza 125 and Forza 350 received a sleek new redesign, with new chiselled dual headlights and front fairings inspired by the range topping Forza 750. Both boast an extensive standard equipment specification including HSTC, electric screen adjustment, USB Type-C socket, underseat storage space for two full-face helmets, full LED lighting and Smart Key operation.

The Forza 125 – which has sold over 115,000 units since its introduction in 2015 – will be available in new Pearl Sienna Red, which joins Matt Cynos Gray Metallic, Pearl Falcon Gray and Matt Pearl Pacific Blue which carry over from last year. The Forza 125 Special Edition, in Matt Cynos Gray Metallic with red wheels, seat stitching, dial surrounds, logos and detailing, blacked-out pillion footpegs and stainless-steel floor plates, is also still available.

The Forza 125’s stablemate Forza 350 has sold over 73,000 units since its European introduction as the Forza 300 in 2013. For 24YM, it will be available in new Pearl Nightstar Black and Matt Pearl Cool White, which join Matt Pearl Pacific Blue (which for 24YM now features new black wheels) Matt Cynos Gray Metallic and Pearl Falcon Grey.

All three models are manufactured at Honda Italia Industriale SpA on the Adriatic coast. With a history that dates back to 1971, the factory has produced 40 different types of motorcycle and 30 different scooter models.

The Forza 125, Forza 350 and ADV350 will start to arrive to dealers by in December.

Get the right winter blues with 2.9% offer from Suzuki

It might be getting colder but Suzuki is making it easier to get the right sort of winter blues by offering 2.9% APR finance on a number of models.

Available over four years on both PCP and HP, the offer includes the Hayabusa – including the new 25th anniversary edition – both the V-Strom 1050 and V-Strom 1050DE, the GSX-S1000, and both the GSX-S1000GT and GT+.

There’s also £500 off the GSX-R125 and GSX-S125, plus £750 worth of free accessories available on the V-Strom 1050 and V-Strom 1050DE. All three offers run until 31 January 2024.

As a part of the 2.9% finance deal, the flagship, 25th anniversary special edition Hayabusa – complete with its legendary 1340cc inline four-cylinder engine, sophisticated electronics package that includes power modes, cornering ABS, traction control, anti-wheelie, a bi-directional quickshifter, multiple engine braking settings, launch control, and cruise control, and striking bodywork – can be ridden for £149 per month on a four-year PCP deal, with a £4,210.48 deposit.

Or, those looking to cover big miles on a big adventure bike can pick up the V-Strom 1050, with its similarly all encompassing suite of electronics, DR Big-inspired style, and punchy 1037cc V-twin motor, for £109 per month over the same period with a £2,711.30 deposit, while also equipping it with their choice of complementary extras.

We understand that monthly payments remain key for our customers and by offering an incredibly low 2.9% through the winter we believe more customers will take advantage now and not wait until spring to ride away on a new Suzuki.”

Unleash your Darkness with the Next Generation MT-09

The Dark Knight: Unleash your Darkness with the Next Generation MT-09. Sharper new look, refined riding position, intelligent technology

The Purest Hyper Naked
As the original Hyper Naked born out of the Dark Side of Japan, the MT-09 has always been the purest of all MT models, with its dark and mysterious aesthetic and grin-inducing performance leaving a lasting impression on every rider.

The game-changing MT-09 broke cover in 2013, just one year after the triple-cylinder CP3 engine concept was first shown suspended in an intricate wire frame at the Cologne Motorcycle Show.

The first MT-09 brought pure emotion and excitement back to the world of motorcycling, kick-starting the Hyper Naked revolution that would change everything.

For 2024, Yamaha has taken the MT-09 to the next level of Darkness, combining intelligence and style, further pursuing the sharpened purity of the Dark Side of Japan.

The new MT-09 offers an even more thrilling riding experience with pure adrenaline, aggressive and edgy styling and a premium specification featuring the latest in technological advancements.

A Decade of the Dark Side of Japan
The introduction of the MT-09 marked a step away from conventional Japanese motorcycle design and introduced a bold, abstract new direction for Yamaha inspired by the unique urban motorcycle sub-culture found on the streets of Japan’s largest cities.

Signifying an exciting new era for Yamaha, the MT-09 featured aggressive styling, a chassis designed for the most agile handling and a torque-laden CP3 engine, with aesthetics and performance designed to stimulate the senses.

Stripped of unnecessary bodywork, packed neatly into a compact aluminium frame and equipped with Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T), the MT was the perfect blend of high performance, cutting-edge technology and purposeful functionality.

The new dawn was here and the Dark Side of Japan was unleashed upon the world.

The Beginning of a Hyper Naked Revolution
Over the years, the MT-09 has evolved into one of the most significant and successful models in the Yamaha range, earning its status as one of the most iconic motorcycles in Yamaha’s history.

The MT-09’s introduction was soon reinforced by the arrival of the MT-07, another highly successful motorcycle that established itself as the runaway market leader for many consecutive years.

The Hyper Naked segment is now one of the most important and successful in Yamaha’s range, featuring a total of eight models progressing through the experience levels from the learner-friendly 125cc MT-125 to the 1000cc MT-10 SP, the halo model of the line-up.

New MT-09: Sharper, Purer, More Refined
A Slimmer, Sharper New Look
The MT-09 marks its 10th anniversary with a comprehensive new design intended to amplify the feeling of the CP3’s iconic torquey acceleration.

Based on the concept of ‘3D Riding’, allowing the rider to move more freely on the machine, the 2024 MT-09 bodywork is inspired by Yamaha’s YZ motocross bikes, which also require a high degree of freedom in riding position.

The styling concept behind the MT-09 has always been that of ‘functional beauty’, eliminating unnecessary features and embodying a ‘less is more’ approach. Each and every detail has been reconsidered to reinforce the MT-09’s pure aggressive look and maximise an engaged riding experience.

More Compact LED Headlamp
A new LED headlamp, enclosed in a redesigned cover, creates a more unified relationship between the headlamp and the fuel tank and is inspired by the MT’s origins – a blend of ‘Naked’ and ‘Motard’.

The bi-functional LED projector headlight has been enhanced, featuring a compact diameter lense module that is both smaller and thinner than the previous model, but which still provides a broad and powerful beam with soft edges for both low and high beam settings.

Transparent twin LED position lights express a cool look with a sense of concentration to complete the MT-09’s more compact, sharp and aggressive style.

This theme is continued at the rear with a newly designed LED tail light. The tail light and brake lights are separated to align with the new outer lens shape. And to give the whole rear a slimmer look, the upper tail light lens is red, while the bottom has a smoked finish.

Sharpened Fuel Tank Design
A new fuel tank has been designed to promote a more engaged and free riding position while maintaining the sharp and edgy aesthetic that has become synonymous with the MT name.

Produced using a new press moulding manufacturing method, the new tank offers sharper character with clearly defined edges and tense styling unique to the MT models.

A More Engaged Riding Experience
Amplified CP3 Acoustics
The grin-inducing roar of the MT-09 is one of its most defining characteristics, evoking a sense of pure adrenaline with every twist of the throttle.

Following the Jin-Ki Kanno philosophy to stimulate the rider’s senses and make them feel at one with the bike, sound was an important consideration in the development of the latest EU5+ CP3 engine.

The new MT-09’s sound is further amplified by a revised airbox featuring two newly designed air-intake ducts, which accentuate the high frequency sounds while maintaining a linear throttle response.

This sound is then emphasised, especially at higher speed and revs, by the introduction of a new acoustic amplifier grille on top of the bike, delivering the CP3’s vibrant note directly to the rider.

Redefined Riding Position
The MT-09 is renowned for its stability and agility and this has been enhanced by refined ergonomics with modifications to the handlebar/footrest/seat relationship to improve rider comfort and offer greater freedom in movement for different riding styles, while maintaining a sporty forward-lean riding position.

In order to achieve this, the overall handlebar position is now lower and the rider can now choose between two adjustable handlebar positions depending on their personal preference and physique. The steering angle is also increased as a result of the lower profile fuel tank.

The newly designed footrests are 30.6 mm back compared to the previous model and have been raised by 9.5 mm, while the footrest height can be adjusted to two different positions based on rider preference. To improve passenger comfort, the tandem footpegs have also been redesigned and are now mounted underneath the rear frame.

Details Matter: New Brake and Gear Shift Pedals
Each and every detail of the MT-09 has been reconsidered in order to further improve the riding experience. The rear brake pedal has been redesigned and is now made from forged aluminium, while the tip of the gear shift pedal has been significantly flattened to reduce the amount of ankle movement required during shifting, enabling smoother operation.

Separated Rider and Passenger Seats
To further enhance the feeling of freedom, the MT-09 now features a separated front and rear seat, improving both rider position and convenience when mounting and dismounting the machine.

The step between the two seats also functions as a means of keeping the rider forward and over the front of the machine as the MT-09’s torque is unleashed, while the overall seat design improves rider agility.

A Type-C USB socket is installed under the rider’s seat to accommodate the charging of electronic equipment and electric heating wear.

Brembo Radial Master Cylinder: Linear Power, Total Control
In order to match the MT-09’s high torque and acceleration, stopping power is enhanced by a new Brembo radial master cylinder, which moves in the same direction as the brake lever, resulting in a linear relationship between rider input and hydraulic brake pressure to the dual front brake discs for excellent controllability.

In addition, a newly designed adjustable clutch lever offers the rider further control when engaging the clutch.

Fully Adjustable Front Suspension and Bridgestone S23 Tyres
The MT-09’s 41 mm KYB® front forks are fully adjustable for preload, compression and re-bound damping and now feature revised factory settings to achieve excellent stability.

The rear suspension linkage design has been modified and the adjustable KYB® rear shock set to allow for a more dynamic feeling in cornering, while new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 M tyres offer high grip and light handling.

More Intelligent Technology
5” TFT Full Colour Screen
The 2024 MT-09 is equipped with a range of next-level technology to enhance the overall package and riding experience while remaining true to the Dark Side of Japan concept many have come to love.

An all-new, horizontally mounted 5” TFT full colour screen offers the rider an attractive new interface with the choice of four different themes to suit a range of different riding experiences.

Smartphone Connectivity and Navigation
For an enriched riding experience, connectivity comes as standard on the MT-09 via a built-in Communication Control Unit (CCU), meaning riders can stay connected while riding by linking their smartphone with their machine via the free MyRide app. As well as seeing call and message notifications on the 5” TFT display, a new dimension is added to the ride by the possibility of taking calls and listening to music via a Bluetooth headset*. Once connected, riders can also make use of the free Garmin StreetCross navigation system, which will display on the 5” TFT dashboard.

Riders can also personalise the TFT display even further by sending images from their smartphone via the MyRide app using the Information Transfer feature.

There is also the option to provide power to external devices with the new under-seat USB Type-C socket.

*Bluetooth headset not included with MT-09

Intuitive New Switchgear
New integrated handlebar switch assemblies enable the rider to operate the wider range of functions of the new MT-09, including smartphone connectivity, navigation and riding modes, as well as navigating the further menu options.

Featuring a clear, logical and simple design – the shape, movement and ergonomic layout of the buttons have been designed with intuitive movement in mind, meaning riders can cycle through the various different functions with ease.

Customisable Riding Modes with Yamaha Ride Control Settings
New for 2024, MT-09 riders can now further customise their riding experience via the Yamaha Ride Control (YRC) settings, which allow the rider to select engine power characteristics and the level of electronic intervention to suit their preferences and road conditions.

Three integrated riding modes, ‘Sport’, ‘Street’ and ‘Rain’ featuring factory settings with different intervention levels to suit various conditions are complemented by the option to pre-set two Custom modes. This allows the creation of specific YRC settings to suit certain situations (weather, location, etc.) by altering the level of electronic support such as Power (PWR), Traction Control System (TCS) and LIF (Lift Control) – all of which can be set directly through the MT-09’s dashboard or using a smartphone via the MyRide app.

These personalised settings can be sent to the machine from the rider’s smartphone and cycled between with ease while riding using the all-new switchgear.

Extra Support from Advanced six-axis IMU for Ultimate Performance
In 2021, the third-generation MT-09 became the first Hyper Naked to be equipped with the high-tech six-axis IMU directly developed from the R1.

Constantly measuring acceleration in the forwards-backwards, up-down and left-right directions – as well as the angular velocity in the machine’s pitch, roll and yaw directions – the six-axis IMU is able to send data in real time to the ECU, which controls the suite of electronic rider aids, including the lean sensitive Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS), as well as a front wheel Lift Control System (LIF) and Brake Control System (BC).

This suite is further enhanced for the 2024 MT-09 with the addition of a Back Slip Regulator (BSR), which offers stabilisation when the rear wheel locks under excessive engine braking by controlling the level of torque produced. This is especially useful in situations when it is difficult to activate the slipper clutch, such as when grip is low.

Cruise Control for Effortless Riding
In addition to the comprehensive electronic rider aids, the new MT-09 is also equipped with a cruise control system to enhance the overall riding experience by offering a more relaxed option for motorway riding.

Operational in third gear and above, once the cruise control system has been activated, it can be adjusted in 1 km/h increments with a single push of the button or steadily increased by holding the button down. The system is cancelled whenever the brakes, clutch or throttle is engaged.

Soft-click and Auto-cancelling Turn Signals
For a more intuitive and convenient riding experience, a soft-click of the indicator switch will flash the turn signals three times for use when lane-changing or when only brief indication is required. A full-click of the switch will result in continuous flashing until 15 seconds have passed and until the machine has travelled more than 150 metres.

A new Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function reacts to sudden braking by engaging the hazard lights to warn road users behind the vehicle is stopping at speed in an emergency situation.

Third-Generation Quickshifter
The new MT-09 is equipped with the third-generation quickshifter, enhancing the ride by enabling clutchless downshifts while accelerating and clutchless upshifts under deceleration.

To maintain a more natural feeling, the third-generation quickshifter will not operate in certain situations when engine rpm is extremely low or high, and when the machine is neither accelerating nor decelerating. In these circumstances, the quickshifter icon on the new TFT display will indicate whether the quickshifter can be used.

Triumph Raises The Bar New Tiger 900 Range For 2024

Delivering more power, torque, capability and comfort, the new Tiger 900 range from Triumph Motorcycles is raising the bar for middleweight adventure bikes in 2024.  The new line-up includes the Tiger 900 GT, GT Pro and Rally Pro, each providing a significant step-up in performance and specification.

The Tiger 900’s trademark three-cylinder engine has received a major update, including revised engine components, which provides 13% more power than the previous generation, giving 108PS of peak power and a higher peak torque of 90Nm. The new engine also offers greater tractability lower in the rev range. With its T-plane crank and offset firing intervals, the Tiger 900 maintains its characterful and distinctive performance and sound, as well as achieving enhanced performance throughout the whole rev range and up to 9% better fuel economy.

All-new active safety features provide more capability across the range, including enhanced braking for better control and reduced stopping distances, and a new emergency deceleration warning system, which activates the hazard lights when braking rapidly and automatically deactivates when you pull away.

New marker lights provide a prominent silhouette especially at night and in poor visibility. The new range also features new 7” TFT instruments, with new graphics and menu system and a new USB-C cockpit charger, as well as My Triumph Bluetooth connectivity as standard on all models.

The new rider seat is flatter and roomier, with heated seats on both Pro models, designed specifically to provide more long-distance comfort. With 20mm adjustability on the seat height for all models, and an accessory heated low rider seat available which reduces the seat height by a further 20mm. This offers GT models with a potential seat height as low as 800mm, which combined with the narrow stand over width, improves accessibility.

A new damped handlebar mounting system creates a more comfortable ride, plus the enhanced handlebar position on the Rally Pro, with the bars 15mm closer, facilitates a more agile ride while sitting or standing.

Bringing even more Tiger attitude, the 2024 range has new bodywork across the beak, cockpit and side panels in an integrated design that gives each motorcycle an aggressive, adventure focused stance. New contemporary and dynamic paint schemes and graphics complete the look.

A new Akrapovič silencer heads up the comprehensive list of more than 50 accessories, plus customers can choose from four tailored accessory packs, the Performance, Protection, Trekker and Expedition kits.

The new range retains all of the Tiger 900’s class-leading specification:

  • Optimised cornering ABS and traction control with IMU
  • Up to six riding modes including Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road, plus Rider Configurable for the GT Pro and Rally Pro, and Off-Road Pro for the Rally Pro only
  • All-LED lighting, including signature DRL headlight and compact taillight (Position light rather than DRL in US, CN, JP)
  • Triumph Shift Assist (GT Pro & Rally Pro)
  • Heated grips and seats (GT Pro & Rally Pro)
  • Illuminated switches
  • Tyre pressure monitoring system (GT Pro & Rally Pro)
  • Brembo Stylema® Monobloc brakes
  • Model-specific premium specification suspension tuned for maximum road & off-road capability
    • The GT features Marzocchi 45mm USD fully adjustable cartridge forks, rear suspension unit with manually adjustable preload and rebound damping and 180mm fork travel & 170mm rear wheel travel
    • The GT Pro features Marzocchi 45mm USD fully adjustable cartridge forks, rear suspension unit with electronically adjustable preload and rebound damping and 180mm fork travel & 170mm rear wheel travel
    • The Rally Pro benefits from Showa 45mm USD fully adjustable cartridge forks with manual preload, rebound and compression damping and a rear suspension unit with fully adjustable manual preload and rebound damping, 240mm fork travel & 230mm rear wheel travel
  • Lightweight modular frame
  • Adjustable screen & 20mm adjustable seat height
  • 20 litre fuel tank
Tiger 900 Rally Pro

MORE PERFORMANCE

Unique to Triumph, the T-plane crank engine with its 1,3,2 firing order and distinctive, raspy triple exhaust bark, has been further developed for the new Tiger 900 range.

Engine revisions have resulted in a power increase of 13% taking the Tiger 900 from 95PS to an impressive 108PS. This has been achieved while gaining more torque and tractability at low RPM. The increased power can be felt throughout the rev-range, with a more muscular mid-range and improved acceleration.

On the road the new Tiger 900 is agile and easy to ride at low speeds, but with plenty of performance for rapid bursts of acceleration and effortless high-speed touring. In more technical off-road situations, the fine throttle control is intuitive and confidence-inspiring.

Each model benefits from a specific suspension set-up, designed to meet the needs of the rider for each model.

The GT is fitted with high-quality Marzocchi™ suspension with adjustable compression and rebound damping. With 180mm of fork travel and 170mm of rear wheel travel, the set-up has been tuned specifically for the GT to deliver excellent road handling and long-ride comfort with the capability to tackle off-road terrain.

The GT Pro also uses Marzocchi™ suspension. Fully adjustable forks are matched to an electronically adjustable rear suspension unit — this allows for easy and convenient preload adjustments at the touch of a button to suit riders travelling solo, with a pillion or fully loaded.

The Rally Pro uses Showa™ suspension, offering riders full adjustability and a generous 240mm front and 230mm rear wheel travel. This high-quality progressive suspension set-up provides capability and versatility on all roads.

Complementing this specific suspension, the road-focused GT and GT Pro have lightweight cast alloy wheels, 19” at the front and 17” at the rear, for the perfect balance between road handling and off-road capability. The Rally Pro uses tubeless spoked wheels with a 21” front for pure off-road performance and features a broad tyre choice.

Best in class Brembo Stylema™ brake calipers are fitted to all three new Tiger 900 models, ensuring effective stopping power and a sensitive lever feel that helps to keep braking powerful, smooth and controlled.

Tiger 900 GT Pro

MORE CAPABILITY

The new Tiger 900 for 2024 features new active safety features to improve visibility on the road, including a new emergency deceleration warning system, which activates the hazard lights when braking rapidly and automatically deactivates when you pull away. In addition, new marker lights provide a prominent silhouette especially at night and in poor visibility.

Optimised cornering ABS and Traction Control comes as standard across all three Tiger 900 models. Together with the ride-by-wire throttle, the level of assistance can be altered with four different standard riding modes — Road, Rain, Sport and Off-Road.

The GT Pro has five modes with the additional Rider Programmable mode allowing fine tuning to suit the rider’s preferences and riding style. The Rally Pro has six modes with the extra Off-Road Pro mode disabling ABS and traction control completely to allow the Tiger 900 Rally Pro’s capability to be fully utilised off road.

The new enhanced braking system automatically balances front and rear braking effort, working in harmony with the optimised cornering ABS system, to improve stability under hard braking while significantly reducing stopping distances.

Triumph’s Slip and Assist clutch system is fitted to all three Tiger 900 models, giving light clutch lever action to reduce rider fatigue, especially for congested urban riding conditions and for technical off-road riding. This system also improves rear wheel control under rapid deceleration, assisting with smooth and assured corner entry on a range of surfaces.

The Pro models are also equipped with the Triumph Shift Assist system. This allows clutch-less gear changes both up and down the gearbox for seamless acceleration and super-smooth deceleration.

The My Triumph Connectivity System is now standard on all Tiger 900 models. Music, phone and turn by turn navigation can all be accessed via the new intuitive and easy-to-read 7” TFT display which is bonded to the glass for a crisp, non-reflective image. Heated grips and seats plus a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) are also standard on both Pro models.

Tiger 900 Rally Pro

MORE ALL-DAY COMFORT

The seat has been redesigned for enhanced long-distance comfort whilst retaining the ease of movement for the rider to find their perfect ergonomic position. All models feature 20mm of adjustability, as well as heated seats for both Pro models, for optimum comfort in all weathers.

A new damped handlebar mounting system creates a more comfortable ride, while the handlebar position on the Rally Pro has been moved back by 15mm. This slight reduction in reach improves seated comfort while also improving rider control and bike agility in the standing position when riding off-road.

Even the shape of the 20-litre fuel tank has been carefully considered to provide the perfect seated riding position without compromising control when standing. An adjustable screen with five settings spanning 50mm, ensures all riders can enjoy excellent high-speed wind protection.

Tiger 900 GT Pro

MORE ATTITUDE

The aggressive Tiger styling and distinctive adventure-focused stance has been revised and sharpened. The new bodywork now has a cleaner, more integrated design that flows beautifully from the beak, through the cockpit and into the side panels.

Three striking new paint schemes and graphics are available for each model. The GT and GT Pro are available in Snowdonia White as standard, with two premium paint options, Graphite and Sapphire Black, and Carnival Red and Sapphire Black. The Rally Pro is available in Carbon Black and Sapphire Black, with the option to upgrade to the striking Ash Grey and Intense Orange or Matt Khaki Green and Matt Phantom Black.

Tiger 900 GT Pro

ACCESSORIES

Over 50 accessories and four accessory kits are available for the new Tiger 900 range.  The fully loaded Performance accessory pack includes a brand new Akrapovič silencer, the first of a number of new exhaust systems developed in partnership. With a lightweight titanium design with carbon end caps, the new silencer delivers a 1kg weight saving and an even better sound. The pack also includes front and rear scrolling indicators with new marker light feature, and billet machined adventure footpegs.

The Protection Pack showcases key practical accessories, lower and upper engine bar kits, tank pad, sump guard, fork protectors, radiator guard and for off-road, a headlight guard kit. The Trekker and Expedition packs provide two distinct, tailored luggage options for extended touring or off-road adventures.

BMW Motorrad presents the new S 1000 XR

BMW Motorrad is introducing the new S 1000 XR, an enhanced version of the successful long-distance sports bike and multiple test winner. Increased engine power, improved ergonomics, design refinements, and expanded standard features define the model’s upgrades.

The reworked in-line 4-cylinder engine now delivers even more impressive performance, with a flow-optimised geometry for the intake channels and a power output of 125 kW (170 hp).
The new S 1000 XR still shares its in-line 4-cylinder engine with the
S 1000 RR, providing a smooth and powerful torque delivery and a harmonious power characteristic that contributes to excellent rideability. Compared to the predecessor model, the engine power has been increased by 4 kW (5 hp) to now 125 kW (170 hp) at an unchanged nominal engine speed of 11,000 rpm. The main reasons for the performance increase are a flow-optimised geometry of the intake channels and a customised mapping. The maximum torque generated is still 114 Nm at 9,250 rpm.

Improved ergonomics thanks to new seat and even sportier rear section.
In order to provide even more freedom of movement, especially during high-performance riding on country roads and race tracks, the seat of the long-distance sports bike has been completely redesigned. It now offers an extra 10 mm of seat height (850 mm) and provides more space for the buttocks by increasing the usable length and width of the seat, allowing for better adjustment of the seating position depending on the riding conditions. The improved ergonomics make it easier for riders to manoeuvre the
S 1000 XR on the road or on the race track, providing even better control. A total of three different seat heights are available.

The new S 1000 XR also benefits from redesigned elements in its design. The rear section now features new side panels and air intakes inspired by motorsports, giving it a more dynamic look. Additionally, the radiator trim now has a textured surface, and the previously black-coloured “beak” fender is now painted in body colour.

Extended range of standard equipment and new optional extras
/ Original BMW Motorrad Accessories.
The new S 1000 XR comes with an expanded standard equipment list. As part of the standard equipment, Headlight Pro provides additional safety during night-time rides with its adaptive turning light. The rider benefits from improved road illumination in corners.  The package also includes Daytime Running Lights (DRL) for better vehicle recognition during the day. Keyless Ride and a 12 Ah capacity battery are now standard features. Additionally, the new BMW S 1000 XR is equipped with a USB charging option as standard.

Other updates include the availability of the E-Call feature in the USA, the option to equip the S 1000 XR with the optional M GPS Laptrigger, and the availability of
M Carbon wheels as a new optional extra or as Original BMW Motorcycle accessories.

Three new attractive colour options.
Three new colour options reflect the dynamic character of the new BMW S 1000 XR.

• Blackstorm metallic

• Gravityblue metallic

• Lightwhite solid paint/Motorsport
(in conjunction with the M package and M seat).

The key innovations of the new BMW S 1000 XR:

Kawasaki unveil Ninja 40th Anniversary models for 2024 range

Over the last 40 years, Ninja motorcycles have captured the hearts of Sportsbike enthusiasts around the world. Never straying from what made Ninja famous from the start, the development of the iconic brand has always been at the forefront of technology, making Ninja not just a recognisable name but, for many riders, a way of life.

Now – for the 2024 model year – Kawasaki is releasing a “family group” of Ninja 40th Anniversary models as part of a celebration of four decades of performance and innovation. Set to be seen “in the flesh” for the first time at the prestigious EICMA show in Milan and now unveiled online, the trio of machines comprises the Ninja ZX-10R, base machine for multiple WorldSBK titles, the highly regarded mid-weight 636cc Supersport Ninja ZX-6R and the already highly praised and equally high revving Ninja ZX-4RR.

ZX-4RR 40th Anniversary Edition

Each machine will be available in a version of the evocative early 1990’s Kawasaki World Endurance livery of green, blue and white with the bold, unapologetic Kawasaki logo dominating the lower cowl; just like the three-time championship winning machines of the period. Adopted for the 1989 ZXR series of machines, the distinctive livery dials into the fashion for all things retro while also looking fresh and contemporary. Like the Ninja itself – it’s a win/win combination.

Boasting a 40th Anniversary logo on their fuel tanks, each machine has had its livery carefully adjusted to suit the bodywork while the bold Kawasaki logo was taken from original drawings and even the displacement figures on the rear bodywork are evocative of the period. Adding lime green wheels and silver painted parts (including frame parts) illustrates the attention to detail lavished on these machines by stylists at the Kawasaki factory in Japan.

Available alongside the already announced colourways for the 2024 season, the 40th Anniversary models will play a significant role in a global digital celebration of a Sportsbike brand that is universally recognised and respected.

ZX-6RR 40th Anniversary Edition

The bikes will begin to arrive in dealers from January 2024. The Ninja ZX-4RR will cost £8,899, the Ninja ZX-6R £10,849, and the Ninja ZX-10R £17,749.

A new, historic chapter opens for Ducati: the red from Borgo Panigale enters motocross

Nine-time MX World Champion Antonio Cairoli will join Ducati as high-performance test rider for the new racing program.

The Bologna based manufacturer has been working for two years on a prototype that will make its debut next season in the Italian Motocross Championship, with the aim of validating the technical solutions made on the bike on the track. This strategy confirms the approach that distinguishes Ducati in the development of its sportiest and most high-performance models, i.e. starting from racing competition and then creating series products capable of exceptional performance for the delight of its enthusiasts.

This is a multi-year project that will see the creation of a complete range of off-road engines and motorcycles. The models will gradually become part of a family of knobby motorcycles branded Ducati, starting with motocross.

The Bologna-based company has signed an agreement with nine-time Motocross World Champion Antonio Cairoli as a high-performance test rider for the new project and, thanks to his talent, speed and experience, he will give important input for the development of the new motorcycle.

Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, commented: ”I am proud to announce Ducati’s entry into Motocross. A totally new world for Ducati in which we want to bring our talent in designing lightweight motorcycles, with excellent components and high performance and – above all – which can excite more and more motorcyclists. Just as we believe that the track is the best laboratory to develop and test the bikes that will then be available to customers and enthusiasts. This is why we have decided to cooperate with an undisputed champion like Tony Cairoli who, together with the passion and dedication of many of us here in Borgo Panigale, will contribute to making Ducati in off-road as capable in offering very high-performance products to its passionate customers as we have proven on the asphalt. The project is possible thanks to the company’s excellent results in recent years and confirms our desire to extend our presence into new worlds, speak to new motorcyclists and therefore grow the Ducati Community.”

Antonio Cairoli added: “I am extremely happy to become part of the universe of Ducati, which has always been a symbol of Italian spirit throughout the world, and to begin this exciting new adventure, in an all-Italian project. Being able to make my contribution to the development of the Borgo Panigale motocross bike is a dream come true and a source of great pride for me.”

Ducati has also signed a multi-year agreement with Maddii Racing, one of the most experienced teams in the motocross paddock, which will be the reference structure for the MX racing activities and will take part in the 2024 Italian Motocross Championship with Alessandro Lupino, eight-time Italian Champion and 2021 MXoN winner, also contracted to Ducati as racing and test rider.

The focus of the Ducati off-road project is a combination of the search for lightness pushed to the extreme, top-of-the-line components and engines characterized by a very broad power delivery curve. The latter is obtained thanks to the use of the Desmodromic system, used on all the sports bikes of the Bologna based company starting from MotoGP. Ducati is in fact the only company in the world that uses the same valve return system on its highest performing production motorcycles as it does on racing prototypes.

Entering the specialist off-road sector represents a very important and challenging strategic choice for Ducati, made possible thanks to the excellent results achieved in recent years. A decision that confirms the desire to expand the brand’s presence into unexplored terrain today. New young motorcyclists will be able to get close to the Borgo Panigale brand and thus enter the large community of Ducatisti.

The Sport Heritage range pays tribute to some of the most iconic motorcycles from Yamaha’s rich history by blending nostalgic design with the very latest in high performance engine and chassis technology.

Each XSR model takes inspiration and design cues from some of the most significant bikes built by Yamaha in its 68-year history but sees no compromise in modern day performance by bonding this timeless beauty with cutting edge riding technology.

Racing is in Yamaha’s DNA. Yamaha Motor Company has been competing in, and winning, motorcycle races since its inception – pushing the limits of both man and machine. Yamaha’s first ever motorcycle, the YA-1, won the Mount Fuji Ascent Race in 1955 shortly after the company was founded.

Since then, Yamaha has amassed countless victories at all levels from local grassroots amateur racing to the premier class of Grand Prix.

First released in 2016, the XSR900 has long featured subtle hints to Yamaha’s racing pedigree and in 2021, the latest generation XSR900 went one step further with clear design cues taken from race machines of the 1980s and 1990s while maintaining its position as a heritage roadster.

For 2024, the nod to Yamaha’s racing tradition takes another leap with the introduction of the new XSR900 GP, which pays homage to some of the most celebrated race machines from Yamaha’s illustrious past in a way never seen before in the Sports Heritage range.

Combining a sense of 1980s Grand Prix nostalgia with the very latest technology including the iconic, torque-rich 890cc CP3 engine, R1-derived six-axis IMU and lean sensitive rider aids, the XSR900 GP embodies Yamaha’s Racing history without sacrificing modern day performance.

The ‘Golden Era’ of Grand Prix racing
Yamaha first entered a road racing world championship event at the Grand Prix of France.

The first premier class title came for Yamaha in the 1970s, with Giacomo Agostini, and further championship crowns followed later in the decade.

But it was in the 1980s that Yamaha secured its legacy in what would become known as the ‘Golden Era’ for Grand Prix racing. ‘King’ Kenny Roberts rode his YZR500 to a third consecutive title in 1980 but, following that success, Yamaha endured a tough few seasons battling for supremacy with its rivals.

This led to a re-think in approach, with a change in focus to developing race bikes with a priority on a rider’s feeling with the machine.

Not only would this new strategy lay the groundwork for further Grand Prix success (Yamaha won six 500cc Grand Prix titles between 1984 and 1992), but technology developed during this period went on to shape the future of the production sport motorcycle to this day.

Having moved to a slimmer V4 engine in 1982, Yamaha’s engineers turned to developing a frame in which to house this powerplant. The idea was to produce a frame the same width of the V4 motor that would envelop it, like a cage.

This marked the birth of what would become the iconic Deltabox frame, which first featured in the 1982 YZR500 OW61 Grand Prix machine. Offering outstanding rigidity and feedback, just where a rider needed it most, the Deltabox posed such a significant step forward that just three years later Yamaha introduced it to a production model for the first time, with the TZR250 bringing the characteristics of the YZR factory race machine to the road.

And now, 40 years on, the Deltabox style frame remains at the heart of many Yamaha motorcycles, including the new XSR900 GP.

Born out of respect
The English proverb ‘Manners Maketh Man’ derives from a shared understanding that courtesy, good manners and respect are essential to the preservation of good human interaction and relationships.

It is this concept which formed the starting point for the design of XSR900 GP, in harmony with the Faster Sons philosophy of respecting the origin, learning from the past and creating a better machine for the modern-day rider.

The aim was not to create a replica, but instead release a model that pays the utmost respect to the past, while holding its own with the latest in performance and technology. That is the XSR900 GP.

A sense of nostalgia in every detail
1980s inspired cowling
Aesthetically, Grand Prix bikes took a significant step in the 1980s, moving from the curvaceous bodywork of the 1970s towards the ‘boxier’ design seen from the mid-80s onwards. These squarer fairings would set the trend for the next decade not only at Grand Prix level but in production bikes too.

The XSR900 GP features an upper cowling reminiscent of this era, not only with a clear influence from the 1980s YZR Grand Prix bikes but also with notes of the FZR and TZR production sports machines of the late 1980s and early 1990s. To maintain the race-bike look, the XSR900’s round LED headlamp is replaced by a compact lens module, neatly hidden in the front cowling, creating a sense of unity with the front fairing while maintaining excellent illumination.

The bodywork is not only a symbol of the past in looks alone, but the method in which it is fixed in position is also inspired by the 1980s, with a tubed structure connecting the cowling to the frame and straight brackets supporting the dash creating a rider’s view with a genuine golden era feel.

To emphasise the classic cockpit feeling, the upper fairing stay is supported by a nut structure identical to that used for the original TZ250. In true racing style, this structure is fastened with a beta pin, marking the first time Yamaha has used such a fastening on a mass-produced production model for public road use.

The function behind the move from the curvaceous cowlings of the 1970s to the more squared off style of the 1980s was to both improve aerodynamic efficiency and protect the rider from the wind coming from higher performance; and this is no different with the XSR900 GP.

While the windscreen and individual knuckle guards incorporate a taste of the 1980s; it’s not solely about looks. The power output and gear ratio of the 890cc CP3 engine are identical to that of the XSR900, but the front cowling structure of the XSR900 GP increases both acceleration and top speed while the ducts on the side panels efficiently discharge heart from the radiator to maximise cooling performance.

The colour-matched seat cover fits over the passenger seat to complete the racer look with a boxy 1980s style rear end hiding the rear light, while a seat stopper on top of the seat cowling keeps the rider in position to enhance the feeling of acceleration.

Colours reminiscent of the Rainey years
Adorned in one of the most iconic Yamaha Grand Prix colours of all time, the XSR900 GP is available in a heritage livery inspired by the machines ridden by riders such as Wayne Rainey to multiple 500cc Grand Prix World Championships in the 1980s and early 1990s, complete with authentic yellow number boards on both front and rear cowlings.

The Deltabox-style chassis and swing arm are finished in silver to better evoke the era of the 1980s prototypes and emphasise the character of the Deltabox style frame itself.

A sportier ride
Race-style clip on handlebars
Separate ‘clip on’ handlebars add to the racer-style cockpit and offer a sportier riding experience.

The revised handlebars drastically change the riding position from the XSR900, moving the rider further forward on the machine into a sportier riding position, increasing the load on the front to offer the more precise feeling expected from a race-style machine.

However, since the model is not purely focused on racing or circuit riding, care has been taken to ensure the riding position does not lean forward excessively, instead offering a balance which can be enjoyed on the road without discomfort. The comfort is emphasised via a thicker, more supportive seat.

The aluminium diecast footrests are adjustable to two different positions but come out of the factory set at the upper position to emphasise the sportier riding position.

Tuned rigidity
To accommodate the extra load on the front end of the machine, as a result of the more forward riding position, the XSR900 GP areas surrounding the frame have been tuned to optimise stability in turning. The subframe has also been reinforced over the one found on the XSR900.

To further correspond with this front end-led riding style, the XSR900 is the only CP3 model to feature an aluminium steering stem shaft, adjusting rigidity in the steering area to better balance the often conflicting feelings of lightness and stability when changing direction or under rapid deceleration.

In conjunction with the lightweight Spinforged wheels and new Bridgestone Battlax Hypersport S23 tyres the rider can have precise confidence in placing the XSR900 GP exactly where they wish.

Cutting edge technology
High performance brakes and suspension
In line with the mantra of blending yesterday’s style with modern technology, the XSR900 GP boasts the latest in suspension and braking components.

The KYB upside down front forks are fully adjustable for Preload and compression damping as well as rebound damping, so the ideal setup can be found for front end feel. The link-type rear suspension actuates a forward-inclined fully adjustable KYB, shock virtually hidden from sight to maintain the slim and sporty performance at the rear. Remote pre-load adjustment makes customising the ride a simple task.

A Brembo radial front master cylinder underlines the bike’s cutting-edge specification and backs up its sporty potential, while the brake hoses have been optimised to improve braking control in sportier riding, especially under harder stopping forces.

Yamaha Ride Control (YRC)
Further maintaining the mix of nostalgic style with the latest in high performance technology, XSR900 GP riders can customise their riding experience via Yamaha Ride Control (YRC). For simpler use, engine power characteristics and rider aids are integrated to quickly allow changes to the level of electronic intervention depending on rider preferences and road conditions.

Three pre-set integrated riding modes, ‘SPORT’, ‘STREET’ and ‘RAIN’ feature factory settings with different intervention levels to suit different conditions. These are complemented by two Custom settings, which enable the rider to manually select their own power and intervention settings for the various electronically controlled, lean-sensitive rider aids – all of which can be set using a smartphone via the MyRide app.

5″ TFT meter with full connectivity
A new five-inch full colour TFT display is housed in the retro-styled cockpit. While riders can choose from four different themes to suit a range of mindsets, a traditional analogue-style tachometer theme, inspired by race bikes of yesteryear truly enhances the period riding experience.

For an enriched riding experience, smart phone connectivity comes as standard on the XSR900 GP via a built-in Communication Control Unit (CCU), ensuring riders can stay connected while riding by linking their smart phone with their machine via the free MyRide Link app. As well as seeing call and message notifications on the 5” TFT display, a new dimension is added to the ride by the possibility of taking calls and listening to music via a Bluetooth headset*. Once connected, riders can also make use of the integrated Garmin StreetCross navigation system which will display Turn-By-Turn navigation on the 5” TFT dashboard.

There is also the option to provide power to external devices by the new USB Type C socket located near the dashboard.

*Bluetooth headset not included with bike

New ergonomic switchgear
New integrated handlebar switch assemblies enable the rider to operate the wider range of functions of the new XSR900 GP including smart phone connectivity, navigation and riding modes as well as interrogating the various menu options.

Featuring a clear, logical and simple design – the shape, movement and ergonomic layout of the buttons have been designed with intuitive movement in mind, meaning riders can cycle through the different functions with ease.

To aid navigation of busy road environments, a soft-click of the indicator switch will flash the turn signals three times for use when lane-changing or when only brief indication is required. A full-click of the switch will result in continuous flashing until 15 seconds has passed and when the machine has travelled more than 150 metres.

A new Emergency Stop Signal (ESS) function reacts to sudden braking by engaging the hazard lights to warn road users behind the vehicle is stopping at speed in an emergency situation.

Extra support from advanced six-axis IMU with lean sensitive rider aids
Developed directly from the electronic systems on the R1, the XSR900 GP’s high-tech six-axis IMU constantly measures acceleration in the forward-backward, up-down and left-right directions – as well as the angular velocity in the machine’s pitch, roll and yaw directions.

The six-axis IMU is able to send data in real time to the ECU which controls the suite of electronic rider aids, including the lean sensitive Traction Control System (TCS), Slide Control System (SCS) as well as a front wheel Lift Control System (LIF) and Brake Control System (BC).

XSR900 GP also becomes the first Sport Heritage model to be equipped with the third-generation quick shift system, enhancing the ride by enabling clutchless downshifts while accelerating and clutchless upshifts under deceleration in addition to the standard functionality.

Introducing the Kawasaki Vulcan S

Many thanks again to Alfs Motorcycles (particularly Mick/Dave) in Worthing, West Sussex for the loan of bike for the day.

I would say from the outset the Vulcan may not be everyones cup of tea, I’ve never ridden a cruiser style bike before so this is a first. At first looks I personally would’ve gone for the more naked look rather than the model I rode which was the Vulcan S Tourer in Metallic Flat Spark Black. This variant comes with a high touring screen, panniers and a sissy bar. Once out on the road it took me awhile to get used to the relaxed riding, and where to put my feet on teh pegs. When coming to a stop at a junction or lights I kept putting my feet down where the pegs normally are on say roadster or modern classic but the pegs weren’t there and I was just grabbing air. Once I did get used too it I have to say I did enjoy the ride. Like many I’m sure I had a pre-conception of cruisers and that was the weight, I imagined it to be very heavy but I was pleasantly surprised how light it was. That said I can’t compare it to anything like an Indian or a Harley as I have yet to ride one.

So here is a bit of info on the Kawasaki Vulcan S…

The Kawasaki Vulcan S is a versatile cruiser and has attention from riders of all levels, thanks to its impressive design, performance, and cutting-edge features. In this feature we will delve into the details of the Kawasaki Vulcan S, exploring its aesthetics, ergonomics, handling, safety features, and more. Whether you are a seasoned rider or a novice looking to make a statement on the road, the Vulcan S promises to deliver an exceptional riding experience.

The design of the Kawasaki Vulcan S is quite striking, its sleek but muscular silhouette immediately captures attention, showcasing a perfect blend of modernity and classic cruiser aesthetics. The bike is available in Metallic Matte Carbon Gray / Ebony or Metallic Flat Spark Black colour options, allowing riders to choose the one that best suits their personal style. Furthermore, the ergonomics of the Vulcan S are carefully crafted to provide optimal comfort, with adjustable foot-pegs, handlebars, and a low seat height, ensuring a perfect fit for riders of all sizes.

Underneath its captivating exterior, it houses a potent engine that guarantees an exhilarating ride. Powered by a liquid-cooled 649cc parallel-twin engine, the Vulcan S delivers impressive torque and acceleration, making it a force to be reckoned with on the open road. The engine’s smooth power delivery, paired with its efficient fuel consumption, offers a perfect balance between performance and practicality. Additionally, the it features a six-speed transmission that allows for seamless gear shifts, enhancing the overall riding experience.

When it comes to handling it excels in providing precision and control. Its lightweight chassis, combined with a low centre of gravity, enables effortless manoeuvrability, whether you are navigating city streets or conquering winding roads. The well-tuned suspension ensures a smooth and stable ride, absorbing bumps and imperfections with ease. Rear shock features adjustable preload, with 7 positions to suit rider size and payload. The Vulcan S’s nimble nature allows riders to confidently take on corners and tight turns, making it a pleasure to ride in various conditions.

The Vulcan is not only a powerhouse in terms of performance but also a showcase of cutting-edge technology. Equipped with a digital instrument cluster, riders can effortlessly access vital information such as speed, fuel level, and gear position. The Vulcan S also boasts advanced features like Kawasaki’s Economical Riding Indicator, which promotes fuel-efficient riding habits by displaying a leaf icon when the rider is operating the motorcycle in an environmentally friendly manner. Additionally it offers optional accessories such as Bluetooth connectivity, allowing riders to easily pair their smartphones and access navigation, music, and call functions.

When it comes to the overall riding experience, the Kawasaki excels in providing both comfort and control. The plush seat offers excellent support, ensuring fatigue-free rides even on long journeys. The rider-friendly ergonomics, with its relaxed riding position and well-positioned controls, further contribute to a comfortable and intuitive experience. The Vulcan S’s responsive throttle and precise braking system instil confidence, allowing riders to effortlessly navigate through traffic and enjoy the thrill of open road riding.

One of the standout features is its exceptional versatility. With its adjustable ergonomics, riders can easily tailor the motorcycle to suit their preferred riding style. Whether you prefer a more upright position for city commuting or a forward-leaning stance for spirited rides, the Vulcan S can seamlessly adapt to your needs. Furthermore, the bike offers a range of optional accessories, such as saddlebags and a passenger seat, allowing riders to customise the motorcycle for touring or accommodate a passenger with ease.

Kawasaki places a strong emphasis on rider safety, and the Vulcan S is no exception. The motorcycle is equipped with advanced safety features that provide a secure and confident ride. The ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) ensures optimal braking performance, preventing wheel lock-up and allowing riders to maintain control in emergency situations. The engine and precise handling ensure an exhilarating riding experience, while advanced technology and safety features provide peace of mind. The bikes versatility and affordability make it an appealing choice for riders of all levels. Kawasaki has indeed created a cruiser that strikes the perfect balance between power, style, and practicality.

The Kawasaki Vulcan may not be everyones cup of tea but I can say enjoyed my time with it, I would say it would be perfect for someone looking for a cruiser style bike on a budget. I know I bang on about it but I do like a bike where I can put both feet down at the lights or a junction, so with a seat height of just 705mm it would also be perfect for someone short on stature.
