New Yamaha XSR125 Legacy: Ride Through Time

Yamaha Sport Heritage goes from strength to strength

Since the introduction of the first Yamaha Sport Heritage models the segment has proved to be a great success with riders of all ages and experience who appreciate the special way these machines blend authentic style and individual character with modern technology and sports performance.

The XSR brand has quickly established itself as the definitive line for riders who appreciate iconic motorcycles with real character and genuine charm. Yet at the same time as paying tribute to some of Yamaha’s most iconic models from a previous era, the latest XSR700 and XSR900 are also engineered to deliver high levels of engine, chassis and braking performance – giving their riders the very best of both worlds.

Growing popularity
The increasing popularity of Yamaha Sport Heritage models has been stimulated by the influential custom movement – and in particular by the company’s Yard Built programme that has encouraged and facilitated the construction of many special projects by some of Europe’s most creative bike builders. Since its inception the Yard Built project has seen the creation of more than 60 exclusive, one-off specials based on production Sport Heritage models, and Yamaha will continue to invest in the Yard Built scene for 2022 and beyond.

The Yard Built movement has shown how a stock Yamaha production model is the ideal canvas to be transformed into everything from a flat tracker or scrambler through to a café racer. Influenced by some of Yamaha’s most iconic designs from the 60s, 70s and 80s – and equipped with timeless features including spoked wheels, historic colours and quality components – these Yard Built Yamahas have reinvigorated the custom scene and have strengthened the Faster Sons community.

Blending heritage design with contemporary technology in its own unique way, the Faster Sons philosophy is inspiring many riders to personalize their own machines and create something very special that reflects their own personal lifestyle – while at the same time adding an exciting new dimension to the world of motorcycling. Some of these retro design elements – such as spoked wheels – are now a standard feature on the new XSR125 Legacy, underlining how this stylish motorcycle takes the very best from the past and mixes it with the latest design and technology.

New XSR125 Legacy: Capturing the spirit of motorcycling
Yamaha has always been committed to building characterful motorcycles for the widest range of riders. Since July 1955 the needs and desires of the rider have always been the main focus of attention when developing new models. It is this customer-centric philosophy that has enabled the company to create iconic and game-changing models that have helped to change the face of motorcycling over the past seven decades.

The company’s mission can be summed up by the Japanese word ‘Kando’: That is to create deeply satisfying products that inspire the heart and spirit – and the new XSR125 Legacy is a perfect example of Kando in action.

Developed from the extremely successful XSR125 that was launched in 2021, the XSR125 Legacy features the same 125cc VVA engine and chassis architecture. However, the XSR125 Legacy benefits from a number of stylistic changes that transform the character of the motorcycle to give it a unique neo-retro look with a truly individual feel.

These refinements give the new model a distinctive silhouette and individual character that reinforce its links with classic Yamahas from the past while underlining the ethos of the Sport Heritage brand: “Inspired by the past, built for the future”. The XSR125 Legacy is indeed built to be a part of the future for every rider – beginner, experienced or returning – who appreciates timeless style and is looking for up-to-the-minute engine and chassis technology that delivers a quality ride.

Lightweight spoked wheels
The XSR125 Legacy is equipped with a range of model-specific features that work together harmoniously to create a machine with a special character that is sure to be appreciated by the many riders who love timeless style. The lightweight spoked wheels are reminiscent of the designs used on Yamaha’s pioneering racing machines from the 1960s and 1970s and are fundamental to giving this new Sport Heritage bike an authentic look and feel.

Gold-coloured rims
The XSR125 Legacy’s classic spoked wheels are equipped with beautifully finished gold-coloured alloy rims that underline the bike’s excellent build quality and reinforce its strong connection with some of Yamaha’s iconic models from the past.

Set against the all-black bodywork and chassis, the combination of spoked wheels and gold rims gives this 125cc neo-retro a truly individual character and timeless look that perfectly captures the spirit of the Faster Sons philosophy.

Dedicated colours and graphics
New graphics have been developed to echo the look of the larger capacity XSR models and reinforce the close family ties of the Sport Heritage line. Gold and silver pinstripes highlight the classic shape of the rounded fuel tank, while the minimalist gold coloured graphic on the sidepanels complements the gold-coloured rims.

The tank, sidepanels and fenders are finished in Historic Black, while the black coloured Deltabox frame, swingarm, upside-down forks and engine covers give a stylish and understated look that perfectly matches the character of this new 125cc motorcycle.

High performance Metzeler Karoo tyres
The XSR125 Legacy’s new spoked wheels are fitted with high performance Metzeler Karoo tyres that are designed to bring out the fun performance of this lightweight Faster Sons model. Their block pattern perfectly complements this new Sport Heritage bike and underlines its ability to deliver an exhilarating ride in a range of situations.

2-piece aluminium muffler cover
XSR Sport Heritage models are famed for their attention to detail and the use of quality components, and the new XSR125 Legacy is no exception. As well as a range of beautifully crafted aluminium brackets and fittings, this lightweight Faster Sons bike is equipped with a 2-piece aluminium muffler cover that reinforces its sporty specification.

Distinctive XSR silhouette
Seen from the side there’s no mistaking the XSR125 Legacy’s bloodline with its strong horizontal flow. The special combination of spoked wheels and upright riding position, as well as its fully exposed mechanical structure and naked good looks are sure to be appreciated by every rider – new or experienced – who knows exactly what they want from their motorcycle.

Class leading 125cc 11kW engine
The XSR125 Legacy is driven by one of the most appreciated and successful engines in the 125cc category. This potent and reliable 125cc 4-valve liquid cooled single cylinder Euro5 compliant powerplant is the same design as used in the MT-125 Hyper Naked and the R-125 Supersport. Producing a full 11kW – the maximum allowable in the A1 license class – this highly acclaimed engine is a strong all round performer.

One of the key technological features is Yamaha’s Variable Valve Actuation (VVA) system that enables the engine to deliver strong torque at lower engine speeds together with excellent performance at higher speeds. This makes the XSR125 Legacy a great performer in a variety of situations, from fast highway riding through to slower speed back road trips – and the ample torque output also ensures lively acceleration.

37mm upside-down front forks
Featuring a black finish that perfectly matches the bike’s black frame and engine, the XSR125 Legacy’s 37mm upside-down forks form part of a first class specification that is even more impressive considering that this 125cc neo-retro is available at such an affordable price. Whether riding through mountain bends, navigating urban traffic or heading off for a weekend tour, these front forks are built to give confident roadholding together with precision handling.

Strong and lightweight Deltabox frame
First developed for the company’s Grand Prix race bikes, Yamaha’s legendary Deltabox frame ensures precision cornering and confidence-inspiring straight line stability that enable the rider to enjoy the full potential of the best-in-class 11kW engine. With a compact 1.330mm wheelbase and accessible 815mm seat height, XSR riders can expect agile handling together with relaxed ergonomics that make this bike eminently suitable for a wide range of riders – whether starting out, experienced or returning to two-wheels.

Stylish LED lighting
Another example of how the XSR125 Legacy successfully blends timeless retro style with modern technology is the high tech lighting. Featuring a classic circular outer shell with LED position lamp, the main LED headlamp produces a powerful beam for excellent night time visibility – while the compact LED taillight emphasizes the light and elegant profile of the slim and sporty rear end.

Yesterday it was announced that Yamaha will participate in the Africa Eco Race and in this announcement it was revealed that global leaders in transport for healthcare, Riders for Health has become Yamaha’s title partner for the race to raise awareness for its projects.

Now, Yamaha is happy to officially announce a three-year partnership with Riders for Health, a humanitarian organisation which provides accessible healthcare to some of the most remote communities in regions across Africa by supplying and maintaining motorcycles and other suitable vehicles to health-focused organisations.

For more than 30 years, Riders for Health has been providing suitable transport to health care workers across some of the poorest and most hard to reach regions of Africa where citizens often find themselves without the basic health care that many of us take for granted.

Riders for Health has long used Yamaha motorcycles to provide these vital services, making the organisation a natural fit for this partnership as Yamaha looks to live by its ethos of contributing to society and bringing value to people’s lives.

Over the coming months in the lead up to the start of the Africa Eco Race, Yamaha and Riders for Health, in cooperation with its UK-based fundraising arm, Two Wheels for Life, will launch some exciting fundraising activities, so stay tuned for this news on either the Yamaha or Yamaha Motor For Riders’ website.

Eric de Seynes, President, Chief Executive Officer of Yamaha Motor Europe, Senior Executive Officer of Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd.

New Yamaha NEO’s electric scooter

The new generation NEO’s is Yamaha’s first “50cc equivalent” electric scooter to be launched in the European market, and has been developed to satisfy the requirements of a wide range of customers in an ever changing world.

Featuring a compact body with simple, universal and attractive styling, this new ultra-quiet zero emission model has a fresh and contemporary look that conveys its easy-to-ride character.

Yamaha developed the world’s first production eBike with the invention of the Power Assist System in the early 1990s, and since then over 7 million Yamaha eBike drive units have been sold. The new NEO’s is equipped with the latest generation Yamaha Integrated Power Unit (YIPU) that has been developed using the extensive knowledge gained by the company over the last three decades.

Powered by a removable 50.4V/19.2Ah lithium-ion battery, a hub-mounted brushless electric motor with direct drive gives quick and controllable acceleration – and the universal riding position makes this new electric scooter ideal for riders of any size and experience. Smart, simple, economical and reliable, the new NEO’s is an ideal choice for anyone who is looking for an affordable next generation electric scooter for daily commuting and general urban mobility.

Easy, quiet and accessible urban mobility for everyone
For many decades, Yamaha has been one of the most successful and respected manufacturers within Europe’s significant 50cc scooter market. Starting from the 1990s, the company has produced some of the industry’s most successful models under the Yamaha and MBK brands – including real icons like the BW’s, the Aerox and both the 2-stroke and 4-stroke versions of the NEO’s.

In parallel to its core internal combustion engine business, Yamaha has been devoting substantial research and development into electrically powered scooters for over 30 years and in 1991 the company displayed the Frog – its first electric scooter – at the Tokyo Motor Show. Since then, Yamaha has continuously worked on electric scooter development and has launched several electric models in various Asian Countries.

For 2022, the new generation electric NEO’s is Yamaha’s first “50cc equivalent” mass-produced electric scooter to be released in the European market and this affordable new zero-emissions model is ready to play its part in the transformation of urban mobility in European towns and cities.

Pure, sporty and with universal styling
The NEO’s has always been known for its simple, universal yet attractive styling and the new electric model comes with smart new bodywork with an upright style and minimal front and rear overhang to give this new scooter a distinctive character of its own.

The compact body features soft, rounded forms that enhance the relaxed feel and convey the easy-to-ride character of this ultra-quiet zero-emissions scooter. Surrounded by white rings that give a fresh, understated and contemporary look, the new full LED twin-eye headlights are inspired by the iconic face of the original NEO’s.

In addition to its aesthetically pleasing design, the NEO’s comes with practical touches that underline its role as a daily urban commuter. Not only do the rubber mouldings applied to the outline of the interior give the NEO’s a stylish external appearance, they also help to protect against minor knocks and scuffs, as well as covering various fasteners to give a sleeker finish.

The NEO’s is available in two simple and effective colours that perfectly capture its understated yet strong character: Milky White and Midnight Black. In both cases, a dedicated Aqua colour – intended to become the signature of Yamaha EV – is used as an accent on the battery cover and as the colour for the 3D NEO’s logos.

Yamaha Integrated Power Unit (YIPU) – smooth, quiet and efficient
The new NEO’s is driven by the latest generation Yamaha Integrated Power Unit (YIPU) that has been developed using the extensive knowledge gained by the company during the development of pioneering electric scooters including the Passol and EC-03 over the last three decades.

At the heart of this compact direct drive wheel hub is a newly developed air-cooled brushless electric motor that delivers high levels of torque for smooth running, strong acceleration and extremely quiet operation. A key feature of this second generation YIPU is its highly efficient gearless design that significantly reduces transmission power losses typically associated with gears and drive belts. Another significant advantage of Yamaha’s direct drive design is that it virtually eliminates mechanical noise for extremely quiet running to give a relaxing and enjoyable ride – and with fewer moving parts, running costs are kept to a minimum.

The innovative YIPU design doubles up as the rear wheel hub and incorporates the rear braking system and the unit is mounted directly to the rear wheel rim. A single sided swingarm contains the Motor Control Unit (MCU) that governs power output and the rear wheel rim can be easily removed for tyre replacement by the removal of five bolts.

Smart, simple, economical and reliable, the new NEO’s is an ideal choice for anyone who is looking for an affordable next generation zero-emissions scooter for daily commuting and general urban mobility.

Removable Yamaha lithium-ion battery
Weighing just 8 kg and located below the seat in the centre of the chassis is a 50.4V/19.2Ah lithium-ion battery that provides a high power output to the rear wheel. Developed and produced in-house by Yamaha, this high energy density battery gives a range of approximately 37 km on full charge when tested in WMTC Class 1 in STD mode and has a battery temperature of 25°C.

Supplied with one battery as standard equipment, the NEO’s is equipped with the connector and housing for an optional second battery that can extend the range to approximately 68 km.

Charging can be carried out with the battery fitted to the NEO’s or when removed for convenient indoor charging. The NEO’s is supplied with a purpose built portable battery charger designed to be plugged into a domestic socket and takes approximately 8 hours to reach full charge.

Intelligent battery and motor performance
The new NEO’s is designed to achieve optimum running efficiency in different riding conditions and is equipped with a Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) as well as a Motor Control Unit (MCU) that are designed to extract the full performance from the 50.4V/19.2Ah lithium-ion battery and the direct drive electric motor.

The VCU/MCU control when and how each battery is used. If the battery is running low, the power output will be automatically limited – indicated by the turtle icon on the dashboard. When an optional second battery is fitted, the system will switch to the second battery, either when reaching standstill during typical urban stop-and-go riding or automatically during a longer ride without stops.

Quick and controllable acceleration
The combination of a highly efficient direct drive hub-mounted electric motor and Yamaha’s high energy density 50.4V/19.2Ah lithium-ion battery deliver plenty of torque at all throttle openings for instant performance, together with outstanding standing start and roll-on acceleration. With its clutchless and gearless transmission giving smooth performance, the easy-to-ride NEO’s is an extremely efficient scooter that is ideally suited to the stop-start urban riding environment.

Yamaha has taken extra care over the controllability of the NEO’s throttle. The throttle response is carefully engineered to give the rider precise control from a standstill, as well as smooth power delivery in slow-riding conditions – without unexpected acceleration, delay or on-off reaction typical of some electric scooters.

Selectable ride modes for various riding conditions
NEO’s riders can choose from two different ride modes depending on conditions and individual preferences and it’s easy to change modes on the fly using the switch on the right handlebar. STD mode delivers the highest power output of 2.06kW @ 40 km/h and is designed for general use on average roads.

ECO mode is aimed at reducing battery consumption and is best suited to longer rides where achieving maximum range is desirable. In ECO mode, the maximum power is reduced to 1.58kW at 30 km/h and top speed is limited to 35 km/h – while power output is reduced across the entire speed range to extend battery life for a range of approximately 38.5km* on full charge.

*Yamaha research. This range changes by place, riding style and battery degradation.

Smooth, easy and quiet urban mobility
With many cities restricting or even banning combustion engines, the move towards zero-emission vehicles is gathering momentum and the launch of the affordable and accessible new NEO’s gives everyone the opportunity to benefit from smooth and quiet urban transportation.

It’s not just the absence of a combustion engine with its intake and exhaust noise that makes the NEO’s so quiet. The use of Yamaha’s innovative, direct drive hub-mounted brushless electric motor eliminates the mechanical noise associated with gears, belt drives and chains, making it exceptionally quiet.

Yamaha’s test figures show that the electric NEO’s measured 55dB from seven metres away, compared to 71dB for its combustion equivalent – making it one of the quietest vehicles on the road.

Connectivity via Yamaha’s MyRide smartphone app
NEO’s riders can stay connected when riding the new generation NEO’s by downloading Yamaha’s free MyRide app to their smartphone and pairing it with the Communication Control Unit (CCU) on the scooter by simply using a QR code or VIN number. The connected LCD instruments feature icons that display real-time notifications of incoming calls and messages from the user’s smartphone, ensuring that every NEO’s user can keep in touch with friends, family and work colleagues.

NEO’s riders can also share their riding experiences with other Yamaha MyRide users, as well as export journey information and link up with other MyRiders to view photos, compare routes and check out new places to go.

In addition to enabling connectivity, MyRide also gives the NEO’s rider access to technical and running information such as speed, acceleration, vehicle battery status, route tracking and more. The MyRide app will display charging status and the user will be able to see the charge level of the main battery and the optional second battery. A parking locator makes it easy to find the scooter and a malfunction alert lets the user know about any technical issues that may need attention.

By ensuring that every NEO’s rider can stay connected, MyRide makes this new electric scooter the ideal urban mobility solution for everyone, whether they’ve ridden a scooter before or are first time riders.

Compact and easy to read LCD instrument panel – Smart Key keyless system
In addition to the speedometer, odometer and trip and clock functions, the compact-new LCD instrumentation displays charge levels of both the main and second optional battery, as well as STD or ECO riding mode indicators and icons for smartphone app connection, missed calls and email notifications.

Charging status can be seen on the battery itself or on the meter when charging the battery and a charger connected indicator is also featured. Other features include a turtle icon for when power output is restricted, a smart key check light and a ready to ride “RUN” indicator.

The NEO’s is all about convenience and ease of use and its keyless Smart Key system enables the rider to operate the scooter simply by carrying the Smart Key in their pocket.

Comfortable, enjoyable and easy to use
Featuring a natural and upright riding position with a 795 mm seat height and a spacious footboard area, the NEO’s is designed to provide comfortable and relaxed ergonomics for a wide range of riders of varying physiques. By locating the battery under the seat rather than beneath the footboards, Yamaha’s design team have ensured that the new NEO’s has a large foot space, giving riders – large or small – the freedom to adopt the seating position that best suits them.

Generous seat cushioning together with the carefully designed handlebar/seat/footboard triangle creates an ergonomically efficient layout that ensures optimum riding comfort together with easy leg reach to the ground for confident starting and stopping.

Newly designed high-strength chassis
Yamaha’s designers have developed an all-new chassis for the electric NEO’s that consists of a high-strength frame that is designed to accommodate the fitment of various accessories including luggage, an apron, a smartphone holder and more. New KYB forks feature tough nickel plated inner tubes for increased corrosion resistance, while the NEO’s durable specification makes it the ideal package for urban commuters who want a simple, reliable and easy form of transport.

Yamaha Motor Switches ON

The start of new era in electric mobility
Eric de Seynes – Yamaha Motor Europe’s President & CEO – announces today the company’s entry into the world of electric personal mobility. “The concept of mobility has continuously evolved over the years, and consequently our cities and infrastructures have adapted to these changes. However, one thing that has remained the same over the decades is the universal desire and need for personal mobility that gives a real sense of freedom.”

Yamaha is focused on delivering creative and innovative new solutions to support the evolving needs of its customers – and in the première of Switch ON, Yamaha reveals details of its future electric models and how they have been developed to satisfy the requirements of a wide range of customers in an ever changing world.

Two new electric Yamaha scooters
In the next few weeks Yamaha will launch the all-new NEO’s – a smart, accessible and high quality “50cc-equivalent” electric scooter that was first displayed at the 2019 Tokyo Motor Show as the E02 prototype. This will be followed by Yamaha’s first “125cc-equivalent” scooter that will showcase the company’s very latest engineering and technology. Derived from the E01 prototype – also displayed at Tokyo – this yet to be named model will be the protagonist in a Proof of Concept activity that Yamaha will set up in a major European city with a scooter sharing partner.

30 years’ experience in eBike drive units
Yamaha has a long and distinguished track record in electric vehicle development that goes back to the early 1990s when the company created the first Power Assist System (PAS) which formed the basis of the world’s first production eBike. Since then Yamaha has been at the forefront in the development of lightweight and compact electric drive units for eBikes, with approximately 7 million produced in three decades.

In recent years the demand for eBikes has grown exponentially, with more than 5 million sold in Europe in 2021 – many equipped with Yamaha drive units – therefore the company has made the decision to expand its production capacity and start producing drive units in Europe. While remaining totally committed to developing cutting-edge drive unit systems for the company’s many OEM bicycle manufacturers, Yamaha is about to launch three new ‘own brand’ eBikes in the All Mountain, Gravel and Urban segments. Full details will be revealed during the summer, and these new Yamaha eBikes will start to be available before the end of 2022 through Yamaha’s Powered Two Wheeler network, with the target to complete the European Distributor set-up in 2023.

The moped is back
But this is just the beginning, and to underline the company’s future potential in every class of electric urban mobility, Yamaha presents the B01 – a new hybrid prototype that intelligently combines eBike S-Pedelec functionality with moped performance and all urban terrain ability. Currently a concept model created by Yamaha Motor Europe in association with long-term partners Fantic Motor and Motori Minarelli, B01 will evolve into a production machine that will further expand Yamaha’s electric mobility range.

Eric de Seynes concluded, stating that “Yamaha is excited to expand its personal mobility range and open a whole new chapter in the history of the company. Backed up by Yamaha’s world-class engineering capabilities and supported by a professional dealer network, the introduction of these new electric products and related services will inspire a new generation of customers.”

Yamaha announce Ténéré 700 World Raid

Yamaha announce Ténéré 700 World Raid: Fuel your life with a New Horizon.

Forty years ago the original XT600 Ténéré made real adventure a possibility for everyone. Developed from Yamaha’s Dakar race bikes, the first Ténéré literally opened up a new world for any rider with the desire to get away from the ordinary, escape from their comfort zone and see new faraway places.

Since the 1980s many thousands of riders have chosen the Ténéré as their long distance travel companion. During this time Yamaha’s original adventure bike has continuously evolved, and more recently the introduction of the Ténéré 700 has inspired a new generation of riders to chase the Next Horizon.

In a very short period of time the Ténéré 700 has earned the respect of riders all over the globe who appreciate its high torque CP2 engine, versatile chassis and unrivalled durability and reliability. It is a worthy successor to the original bike that changed motorcycling forever, and in just a few years it has become the model of choice for a diverse group of riders who value the accessibility and freedom that it offers. It’s also shown its incredible versatility in the hands of legendary names such as multiple round the world rider Nick Sanders through to extreme enduro legend Pol Tarrés.

Following the huge success of the Ténéré 700 and the Ténéré 700 Rally Edition, Yamaha are now ready to launch the ultimate long distance Yamaha adventure bike that is designed to offer a whole new world of possibilities to everyone who has the spirit of adventure within their soul.

New Ténéré 700 World Raid: Fuel your life with a New Horizon
The Ténéré 700 was just the beginning. Now Yamaha is about to open up a new dimension in adventure riding with the latest Ténéré 700 World Raid – a premium long distance motorcycle that offers excellent on/off road ability combined with outstanding versatility and an enjoyable riding character.

This third member of the Ténéré 700 family brings so much to the world of motorcycling by giving all kinds of riders the chance to live out their dreams. The world has changed dramatically in the last few years, and this motorcycle gives everyone the chance to rediscover the freedoms that were taken for granted.

Equipped to go further than any previous Ténéré, and featuring the most advanced specification that includes state-of-the-art suspension for added confidence and comfort, improved ergonomics, rally-inspired styling and multi-mode instruments with incoming call and text message notifications, the Ténéré 700 World Raid is a motorcycle that can make the world seem a much smaller place.

Twenty-three-litre capacity dual side-mounted fuel tanks
The Ténéré 700 World Raid is Yamaha’s most extreme long distance adventure bike with the ability to go further than ever before. Adventure riders are fearless characters who are always looking for the next challenge, but the one thing that’s always at the back of every long distance rider’s mind is the availability of fuel in a remote environment.

The new 23-litre dual side-mounted fuel tanks are designed to bring peace of mind on the longest trip and eliminate the range anxiety that every rider has experienced when the reserve light starts to flash. In typical usage conditions these new tanks are estimated to be able to give a range of up to 500 km, giving a higher level of autonomy that makes the Ténéré 700 World Raid a master of the wilderness.

The unique twin side-mounted design offers a number of significant advantages compared to simply making the tank higher and wider in order to increase its capacity. By having two separate tanks that are positioned lower, and locating the fuel pump in a lower position in one of the tanks, the bike’s centre of gravity can be kept almost the same as with the existing Ténéré 700 that has a 16-litre tank – helping to maintain agile handling despite the increased weight of a larger fuel load.

The vehicle mass is further centralised, with an ideal weight distribution between front and rear.

An important feature of this new layout is that the highest point on the new twin side-mounted tanks is lower than the top of the tank on the Ténéré 700, reducing the height difference between the tank and seat to give a much flatter profile for increased rider mobility and easier front/rear weight shifting when riding off road.

Another benefit of this dual tank design is that the movement of the fuel is limited, compared to a one big tank layout and this gives benefit especially while cornering. And finally, the Ténéré 700 World Raid’s dual side-mounted fuel tanks are not only a reminder of the bike’s desert rally heritage, but are also clear evidence of the DNA this new adventure model shares with some of Yamaha’s most successful factory race bikes.

Flat seat for improved rider agility
As well as the reduced height of the new dual tank design, the Ténéré 700 World Raid also benefits from a new 890 mm high seat that gives a much flatter profile for a smoother transition between the seat and tank. This design enables the rider to move backwards and forwards with minimal effort when shifting their body weight to maintain control on rough terrain, and the new ergonomics are suited to both sit down and stand up riding positions.

The seat’s two-piece design allows for the easy removal of the rear section to enable the fitment of accessories such as a rack or luggage. The seat is made from two different kinds of leather, with a high grip zone in the centre and a smoother zone that enables freedom of movement while riding.

Five-inch colour TFT meter with mobile connectivity
The new 5” colour TFT meter is linked with the bike’s Communication Control unit (CCU) which talks to the MyRide app, giving connectivity in the form of text message and incoming call notifications that are displayed on the instrument panel – and mobile battery status is displayed as soon as a connection is established.

This connectivity and the ability to identify any technical issues that need rectifying provide added peace of mind and reassurance to adventure riders, especially when they are taking part in long distance trips in unfamiliar territory.

Access to the relevant information is crucial on every long distance expedition, and Ténéré 700 World Raid riders can choose from three different themes on the new 5” colour TFT meter.

The ‘Explorer’ screen layout features a modern digital design that provides all of the machine’s key running data in a contemporary and easy to read style. The ‘Street’ screen features a tachometer with a circular dial and needle that give a more conventional look from the analogue era, and the ‘Raid’ screen is inspired by a typical rally racing roadbook and features two independent countdown tripmeters that enable the rider to see the distance to the next waypoint.

Located to the right of the dashboard area there is a USB type A socket that can power navigation systems or charge mobile devices.

Three-mode on/off road ABS
For optimal controllability in varying riding conditions the new Ténéré 700 World Raid is equipped with three-mode ABS that can be selected when the bike is stationary, via a specific menu available in the meter, operated by the right handle switch. Mode 1 is fully on, with both wheels benefitting from ABS as required legally while riding on public roads. Mode 2 and 3 have been introduced for non-public roads riding. In detail, Mode 2 (new function developed for Ténéré 700 World Raid) is front wheel on, rear wheel off, and this is the recommended mode for terrain such as gravel tracks, where low levels of grip are likely to be experienced. Mode 3 is fully off, suitable for experienced riders who want to enjoy pure off road riding.

The instrument panel shows when Mode 2 and Mode 3 are active, and the rider can return immediately to Mode 1 at any time when moving or standing still by pressing a button on the left side of the instrument panel.

High specification 43 mm KYB front forks, 230 mm travel
For refined off road handling performance the suspension system on the Ténéré 700 World Raid features a number of significant upgrades. Newly designed 43 mm KYB front forks give 230 mm of wheel travel – 20 mm more than the Ténéré 700 – offering increased shock absorption potential on rough terrain. The new forks are equipped with a spring preload adjuster, in addition to the rebound and compression damping adjusters and air bleeding screw already featured on the Ténéré 700, enabling the rider to set the suspension to suit different terrain and loads.

For increased durability with reduced internal friction, the longer travel 43 mm front forks feature a resilient Kashima coating applied on outer tube, with a distinctive dark bronze colour, while lightweight fork internal components are used in order to minimise weight, despite the longer stroke.

Öhlins steering damper
For better controllability – particularly in off road riding situations – an Öhlins steering damper is fitted as standard equipment. Mounting position is close to the top triple clamp, allowing the rider to quickly adjust the unit to his preferred levels of feel and feedback on a variety of terrain, thanks to 18 different damping settings.

Full spec aluminium piggyback rear shock, 220 mm wheel travel
The rear suspension has also been upgraded to match the new front forks, and features a revised linkage design with a piggyback type shock absorber with longer stroke. The rear suspension’s damping characteristics, spring rate and linkage ratios have all been optimised in order to give a comfortable ride on the road together with the ability to take some hard hits during off road exploration.

For consistent damping performance the new shock features an aluminium body for good heat dissipation, while the separate piggyback type oil reservoir prevents cavitation – and like the forks, the new shock gives 20 mm more wheel travel, and is fully adjustable for spring preload, as well as compression and rebound damping.

A new rubber bumper has been introduced as well to increase performance on energy absorption in case of bottoming.

High-torque EU5 CP2 engine
Yamaha’s iconic 689 cc liquid-cooled in-line two-cylinder engine is the driving force behind the new Ténéré 700 World Raid. Featuring a 270° crankshaft that gives it a characteristic uneven firing sequence, this ‘crossplane concept’ CP2 engine is renowned for its strong linear torque output as well as its ultra-responsive and easily-controllable performance that makes it so enjoyable and rewarding to ride at all speeds.

Compact dimensions and low weight make the CP2 unit ideal for the demands and requirements of adventure riding – and with a linear torque delivery providing plenty of low to mid-range pulling power, this rugged, reliable and economical engine is particularly suited to the varied on and off road terrain typically encountered by adventure riders. Already proven with the best-selling Ténéré 700, this engine is one of Yamaha’s most legendary powerplants, with more than 221,000 CP2-engined units sold since introduction.

Ténéré 700 air cleaner box
The Ténéré 700 family has a new air cleaner box, specifically designed to handle the extreme off road terrain that this long distance adventure bike is built for. The Ténéré airbox has been equipped with a forward-facing intake duct that is designed to prevent ingress of dust and debris thrown up by the rear wheel.

Higher windscreen, easy-to-remove side deflectors, LED flashers and front cowling
For additional wind protection on long distance adventures the bike is fitted with a 15 mm taller screen with easy-to-remove side deflectors, and LED flashers are original equipment.

The front panels surrounding the radiator and the interior panel around cockpit area are manufactured from tough fibre glass composite material. These are designed to be able to handle rugged off road riding.

Larger footrests
Yamaha’s designers have developed the Ténéré 700 World Raid to the highest specification without compromise.

New larger footrests underline this close attention to detail. The larger surface area gives greater grip for the rider’s boots, and also reduces pressure on the soles when riding on extreme terrain. A larger surface area also prevents mud and sand build up, and the removable rubber inserts improve the boot/peg stability in wet conditions.

By removing the rubbers inserts, the footpegs become rally-race oriented components, in terms of look and performance.

New three-piece aluminium engine guard
For increased protection when riding off road, the bike is fitted with a new three-piece aluminium engine guard that helps to prevent accidental damage caused by rocks, stones and any other debris. Thanks to new suspensions with longer stroke, ground clearance is 250 mm.

New radiator grille
To ensure that the radiator maintains its high levels of cooling efficiency during off road riding, a new radiator grille is fitted. Featuring vertical louvres like Yamaha’s off road competition models, this new grille is designed to protect the radiator from debris thrown up by the front wheel.

Yamaha Launches Ambassador Led ‘Free Spirits’ Project for the Yamaha XSR125

Yamaha Motor Europe celebrates the versatility and character of the Yamaha XSR125 with the ‘Free Spirits’ concept.

Where traditionally the bikes themselves and the custom builders have been the stars, the ‘Free Spirits’ campaign shifts the focus onto a diverse range of inspirational ambassadors collaborating on the project. The XSR125 of course plays a key role, taking on subtle modifications to blend into the ambassador’s lifestyle, adding true value to everyday activities.

The versatile XSR125
It’s a perfect fit, as the XSR125 has been built to a high standard specification that includes Yamaha’s top-of-the-line engine as well as an agile handling frame. Featuring state-of-the-art technology seamlessly intertwined with timeless heritage style, this lightweight is the youngest member of the Faster Sons family. And like many younger siblings, this bike will make its mark and is ready to impress. Especially on the aesthetic side, its heritage appearance provides an excellent base for modification.

Free Spirited Builts
Driving the project over the winter and into 2022 are several national Yamaha distributors, working closely together with their local ambassadors. The ambassadors themselves lead the design and changes to their XSR125 custom builds, visualising their unique requirements to create a new breed of Yard Built with a real-world practical value to enhance their daily lives.

Participating Yamaha distributors include Italy, France, Germany, Greece, Spain and Portugal, all working with a wide variety of ambassadors that include musicians, wakeboarders, surfers and artists. The concept will see the XSR125 customised primarily using official Yamaha accessories as a showcase to demonstrate the ease with which the XSR can be personalised to the individual, adding value to their life.

Nikolas Plytas – Water Sport Superstar
The first ‘Free Spirits’ XSR125 machine to be unveiled to kick-off the project has been created by Yamaha Motor Greece in collaboration with global water sport superstar Nikolas Plytas. The top 5 Water-ski World Games competitor enjoys a motivated international social media audience with over two million followers on Tik Tok alone keeping up with his adventures on the water.

As an Athens resident who also spends much of his time on the beach, Mediterranean Water-ski champion Nikolas had a clear brief for his custom XSR125. Leading the design and modification process, Nikolas was clear that his XSR125 needed to be agile and quick to cut through the city traffic whilst also being able to carry all the gear he needs to support his life on the water.

Built for the beach
Working with local builders Motodiktio, Yamaha Motor Greece got to work enhancing the XSR125 to meet the vision of Nikolas. To give him confidence on the beach the front fender was lifted higher in a scrambler style, with larger off-road tyres added for grip in the sand. Unique fixings were added to hold both Nikolas’ surfboard and wakeboard as well as a small winch at the rear of the motorcycle. The detachable winch can be anchored to a secure point on the beach, allowing the Greek athlete to be pulled on his wakeboard across the water, giving him the freedom to ride almost anywhere. LED flash indicators have been added front and rear and Genuine Yamaha accessories add a personal feel, including a light protector and license plate holder.

To complete the build, Nikolas found inspiration in the vintage Dakar XT500s, creating a heritage influenced XSR125 sticker on the tank in the original XT500 style. Finally, Nikolas chose an iconic 80’s Yamaha blue in true Faster Sons style to paint the tank and set the tone for his ‘Free Spirits’ Yard Built XSR125.

Nikolas is now ready to tackle his home city of Athens and his beloved beaches on his unique XSR125 ‘Free Spirit’ custom, showcasing its flexibility to support an active lifestyle!

Stay tuned for more ambassador influenced XSR125 ‘Free Spirits’ builds coming over the next months. Can’t wait to make your XSR125 truly your own? Try the online configurator to build your dream bike.

Yamaha Racing Heritage Club Launched at EICMA

Yamaha Motor Europe is pleased to announce the formation of the Yamaha Racing Heritage Club, which was launched officially during the 2021 EICMA show in Milan, Italy in November.

Designed to protect and share with younger generations Yamaha’s racing history, the Yamaha Racing Heritage Club (YRHC) will bring together selected collectors from around the world who count some of the iconic racing machines from Yamaha’s storied racing history amongst their collection.

The YHRC will be open to owners of bikes from every discipline. From Grand Prix racing the club will admit machines raced between 1955 and the end of the two-stroke era in 2003, while registrations from World Superbike and the Endurance World Championships will be open to machines raced in any of the production classes from 1987 until 2009. From the off-road world the YRHC will be open to motocross bikes raced before 1998 and Paris Dakar machines that raced in Africa prior to 2007.

Collectors will be able to register their historic Yamaha machinery with the YRHC, gaining access to technical information and support from the engineers who were involved in either the development or maintenance of these bikes when they were racing, or who currently work within Yamaha’s racing infrastructure.

YRHC members will also enjoy discounted access to genuine Yamaha parts, and assistance with identifying suitable replacements when genuine Yamaha parts are no longer available due to the age of machinery.

But the YRHC is about much more than just the machinery, it will also bring together those riders that wrote Yamaha’s name large in the history books, reuniting them with the machines on which they achieved their greatest successes.

The collectors and riders will be ambassadors of Yamaha’s Racing Heritage, guardians of the racing history that started at the Mount Fuji Ascent Race just 10 days after the company was established by Genichi Kawakami on July 1st 1955, and which remains an essential part of Yamaha Motor’s corporate culture.

The YRHC will also involve Yamaha’s current crop of racers from all disciplines, providing an opportunity for both them and their army of fans to experience Yamaha’s racing history and the people who made it first-hand, rather than through the pages of a book.

Through a number of exclusive events held throughout the year, the YRHC will bring together collectors and riders, both past and present, to showcase Yamaha’s storied racing history and to share the passion and determination that established Yamaha at the forefront of racing across all disciplines.

For collectors looking for more information on registering for the Yamaha Racing Heritage Club, please email yrhc@yamaha-racing.com.

Paolo Pavesio: Director, Marketing and Motorsport, Yamaha Motor Europe
“We have founded the Yamaha Racing Heritage Club not just to commemorate Yamaha’s rich and storied racing history, but also to safeguard it and to bring it alive for future generations to enjoy in person. We want these bikes to be seen and heard once again, not just to sit idle in a collection, which is why supporting collectors to restore and maintain their bikes is one of the primary objectives of the YHRC. Another objective is to relate the human side of Yamaha’s racing heritage, telling the stories of the riders who raced these iconic machines and the people who both developed and worked on them. We want to share our racing heritage with as wide an audience as possible, which is why the YRHC will attend a number of events each year to showcase these historic bikes, bringing them together with riders both past and present to keep our heritage alive.”

2022 Ténéré 700 and Ténéré 700 Rally Edition

Ténéré legend continues: 2022 Ténéré 700 and Ténéré 700 Rally Edition

Ténéré legend continues
Few other bikes can trace their lineage right back to the start of the adventure movement. When Thierry Sabine organised the very first Paris-Dakar rally in 1979 the bike to ride was the Yamaha XT500. This tough single cylinder machine won the world’s toughest event in 1979 and 1980 – and its runaway success inspired Yamaha’s engineers and designers to develop the first ever Ténéré in 1983.
With its big fuel tank, tough chassis with long travel suspension, and a rugged high-torque engine, the original XT600 Ténéré is one of the most significant models in Yamaha’s history.

Its importance in the development of the adventure scene cannot be understated. Because not only did it make Rally Raid events accessible to every rider who wanted to live their dream and take on the ultimate 2-wheel challenge – the first Ténéré was also the first Yamaha that made round the world exploration accessible to anyone with the desire to seek out new challenges.

During its 40 year history the Ténéré has constantly evolved, going from a single cylinder engine to a 2-cylinder layout with the 750cc Super Ténéré in 1989, and then the 1200cc Super Ténéré launched in 2010.

Ténéré 700 – Living life without limits
In 2019 Yamaha once again completely refreshed the concept with the launch of the Ténéré 700, one of the most eagerly awaited motorcycles of the decade. Driven by the company’s hugely successful 689cc CP2 high-torque engine fitted into a rugged new backbone chassis equipped with premium suspension – and featuring lightweight bodywork with an aggressive rally style quad LED headlight unit – the Ténéré 700 offered customers an alternative vision of how an Adventure bike should be built.

By creating a lighter, medium capacity machine with a real off road ability – and pitched at an affordable price – the Ténéré 700 was an immediate success all over Europe, with around 20,000 units sold each year.

This best-selling adventure model continues into 2022 with a range of new colours. The Icon Blue version is a dynamic new colour-way inspired by the factory’s race bikes, and features blue body panels and blue wheel rims. Midnight Black projects an understated and moody look, and features an all-black body with black wheel rims.

Deliveries to European Yamaha dealers will commence from the December 2021. Prices vary per region, so please contact the national Yamaha distributor for full information.

New XSR700 & XSR700 XTribute – The smile inducing outlaw

New XSR700 – The smile inducing outlaw

Yamaha’s Sport Heritage range is born from combining modern technology with paying homage to the great designs and colour schemes of our past. With the introduction of the new models in 2021 and 2022 the XSR Sports Heritage range is taken to a next level in terms of technology. The segment is maturing without losing its rebellious character.

All XSR’s serve their own purpose and have their own ideal terrain, where the XSR900 wants an environment where it’s power can be unleashed, the XSR125 feels comfortable in city centres, the XSR700 is a perfect fusion of both worlds as it is easily manoeuvres the urban grounds whilst not fearing twisty roads and endless bends.

Any rider can find their ideal motorcycle to identify with and to fit their own characteristics. By fusing iconic style with cutting edge technical specs, frame design and engine development Yamaha’s Faster Sons philosophy ensures that each bike in the Sport Heritage line has its own unique character and appeal – inciting a special pride of ownership amongst the many riders in the Faster Sons Community.

A community that embraced the versatility of the XSR range by making them truly their own. Between the 65+ customised bikes in the Yard Built programme and the countless number of bikes made to measure by riders themselves, Yamaha takes pride in having created a basis for rider expression. A platform where people pour their heart and soul in designing their ultimate bike. From complete overhauls to small refinements – Yamaha celebrates all application of personal style.

New XSR700 – Born to Challenge
With the introduction of the XSR700 following Shinya Kimura’s concept from 2015 it soon became one of the favourite motorcycles for those riders who seek a rebellious fun machine with a seriously fashionable edge. Great looks inspired by Yamaha’s heritage models combined with the torque rich CP-2 engine guarantees an unforgettable ride. Not to mention the hard-to-remove grin on the riders face.

Whilst respecting the past, Yamaha looks to the future and decided to improve the existing platform of the XSR700 with a number of tweaks to lift it to the next level. In the meantime ensuring that the versatile character of the bike is not lost in the process.

The new XSR700 will feature its well known heritage-influenced design aspects like the retro-influenced bodywork, stepped seat and classically styled head-and-tail light. Respecting the bikes of the past, whilst embracing the contemporary by making use of modern technology likes ABS, LED lights, the most efficient CP2 engine to date. Thus living the Faster Sons philosophy as originally intended for this constantly evolving segment.

Colour inspiration
For the colours of 2022 Yamaha looked at one of the more iconic motorcycles of our rich history. The famous 2-stroke RD350LC from the early eighties provides the inspiration for the modern interpretation of the colour scheme, resulting in the a crisp White and Blue and a more elegant Black and Gold combination.

New XSR Family LED Headlight design
As introduced in the all-new XSR125, the Sport Heritage range has received an upgrade in lighting. A heritage inspired round LED headlight with a split projector and a half-circular position lamp. The tail light features a classically shaped round form while ensuring optimal visibility through its LED technology. The LED indicators are subtly shaped, as minimal as possible but also ensuring high visibility.

The new integrated headlight stays connect into the fork shrouds for a more compact front expression.

Revised Cockpit layout
Also classically shaped with modern features, the Inverted LCD meter has been placed in a forward position for improved clarity and visibility. The lines and position are designed to match the all new head light, giving the bike a sleeker “snub-nose” look on the front end.

Timeless, Casual Character
Besides the look, the XSR700’s legacy is earned on the road. The versatile character is the beating heart of the machine. The XSR700 is a bike to be ridden, anyway you like. From casual cruising to hitting the twisties, the bike can do it all. An accessible motorcycle that is enjoyable for both new and experienced riders. The character is reflected in the construction. The two-part frame, tank assembly and seat design are largely kept the same, safeguarding the easy-to-customise features the XSR700 is renowned for.

Next-level improvements
With the increasing maturity of the XSR700 there are several improvements made both in performance and in safety. As with its CP2 brothers the XSR700 is fitted with the characterful EU5 compliant 689cc engine. Refining the rideability of the XSR700 even more – but keeping every inch of fun with the characteristic performance engine.

To refine the riding performance, the XSR700 receives new improved, larger 298 mm front brake discs, a revised front fork and Michelin Road 5 tyres. To accompany the all-black handles and levers, the switches too have received a technical upgrade, making them more user-friendly. Allowing the rider to access the LCD-meter function while riding. The radiator has also received new side covers, cleaning up the overall looks and allowing the indicators to move away from the front.

XSR700 XTribute – Ride the Legend
With all these new specs we keep paying homage to one of our most loved motorcycles of all time; the XT500. In 2022 we again present the XTribute, inspired by this legend amongst the Yamaha ranks. Besides the clear design references, both models share a number of important characteristics, that make them easy to love. Both the XT500 and the XTribute have a pure design, useable power and an all-round versatility. Just plain and honest fun accompanied with Yamaha’s high regard for quality.

This special combination of timeless good looks and modern technology perfectly illustrates the true spirit of the Faster Sons philosophy. With its unique specification the XSR700 XTribute gives a whole new generation of riders the chance to celebrate the past, while at the same time benefitting from the very latest technology and an outstanding riding experience.

Retro XT inspired “1981” colours and graphics
One of the most iconic features of the XT500 that attributed to its more than a decade of success was the bold yet simple styling. This exact feature is shared with the XTribute, the brushed aluminium tanks covers finished with a XT-inspired graphic package are paired with white mudguards and the celebrated gold rims.

Dirt bike meets Urban Scrambler
To adopt the dirt bike style of the XT500 the XTribute is fitted with a braced handlebar. Not only do these handlebars give the proper urban scrambler looks, they also ensure a comfortable and upright riding position. The wider handlebars give increased leverage, make the bike easy to manoeuvre, even at lower speeds. Focusing on the touchpoints, we find Dirt bike style hand grips and the footrests are designed to fit the scrambler look with their chunky appearance.

Block pattern tyres
For both aesthetic and practical purposes, the XSR700 XTribute’s 10-spoke cast wheels are fitted with Pirelli MT-60RS block pattern tyres, adding to the Urban Scrambler looks. The tyres provide excellent levels of grip and easy handling on the street and on dirt roads.

Special flat seat and fork gaiters
To respect the design principles of the XT500 the XTribute is fitted with a flat profile seat, featuring a subtle XTribute logo embossed on the rear. Providing a true 80s dirt bike look but giving modern comfort.

Every Yamaha Sport Heritage bike is designed with close attention to every detail – and the same is true on the XSR700 XTribute. Black rubber gaiters are fitted to the front forks to underline the whole retro-scrambler feel. The overall riding position is made-to-match with the braced handlebar, off road-style foot pegs and grips.

Light, compact and agile
Weighing in at just 190 kg wet, the XSR700 XTribute is one of the lightest scramblers in the category. The steel subframe and compact chassis is one of the most agile and manoeuvrable designs in the class, making the XSR700 XTribute ideal for urban use as well as chasing a thrilling ride on the open road.

Classic cool scrambler with modern technology
The real beauty of the XSR700 XTribute is in the way that it combines effortless scrambler cool with modern technology. With its purely designed engine, frame and forks set against the retro colours of the aluminium fuel tank covers, gold wheels and white mudguards, the impression of simplicity is reinforced, making this bike a fitting tribute to the original XT500.

Heritage is the new black

To emphasise the iconic colour scheme of the XTribute the designers chose to black-out details that are highlighted on the standard XSR700. From the frame guards, and radiator covers to the instrument brackets, all details are featured in black to blend in with the frame and the dark coloured CP2 engine; highlighting the white mudguards and superb aluminium tank covers.

Optional Akrapovič high-level black exhaust
Back in 1976 the very first XT500 featured a low header pipe with a high level muffler, and customers can pay homage to this look by fitting their XSR700 XTribute with the optional Akrapovič exhaust. With a black finish – like the original XT500 – this high specification 2-into-1 system gives a radical look and produces a gruff exhaust note – key features that complement the bike’s scrambler character and accentuate the premium specification of this new Faster Sons model.

All-new MT-10 SP: Ultimate chassis specification

Raw, uncompromising style, premium specification and exclusive finish

The Dark Side of Japan
Since 2013, the Dark Side of Japan has been the inspiration behind the development of Yamaha’s MT models, which have given Europe’s thrill-seeking riders a whole new level of excitement and dynamism. Designed and built by people who eat, breathe and sleep motorcycles, Yamaha’s MT models have created their own dynamic Hyper Naked category and introduced a huge number of riders to a new kind of two-wheel experience.

With their torque-rich engine performance, agile handling and naked good looks, each and every MT is designed to deliver a sporty, thrilling and rewarding ride that reinforces every motorcyclist’s passion for two wheels. With over a quarter of a million MTs sold in Europe since the first model arrived eight years ago, the Yamaha Hyper Naked range is helping to make motorcycling an even more exciting, accessible and attractive lifestyle choice.

With over 290,000 sold in Europe, the MT line up has brought a new excitement to the street, and the smaller capacity models have been successful in attracting a whole new generation of people into the world of two wheels.

From the new MT-10 to the MT-125, Yamaha’s Hyper Naked range is designed to give every rider the opportunity to be a part of the most exciting and accessible movement in European motorcycling.

New MT-10 SP
Ultimate riding experience
One of the key attractions of Yamaha’s MT range is that it offers the widest range of Hyper Naked models, giving riders with different experience levels, requirements and budgets the chance to choose the right bike. Finished in exclusive colours and graphics, the SP models represent the pinnacle of machine development, and feature the most sophisticated specifications available.

Öhlins semi-active suspension system
The new MT-10 SP is designed for riders who want the most exclusive Hyper Naked with the very highest chassis technology ever fitted to a production model. This machine is the first motorcycle in the world to be equipped with Öhlins’ very latest electronically controlled suspension system at the front and rear.

Although the Yamaha R1M features a similar system, the MT-10 SP has been fitted with the next generation of the Öhlins electronically controlled suspension system that uses new spool valve damping technology.

This state-of-the-art technology gives a greater range of damping adjustments and gives a higher degree of response. The rider can make suspension changes by accessing the ERS menu in the TRC settings. The ERS menu offers a choice of three semi-active damping modes (A-1, A-2 & A-3) as well as three manual settings (M-1, M-2 & M-3).

When any of the automatic modes are selected the system adjusts the rebound and compression damping to match the current running conditions, and changes are constantly made to ensure that the most appropriate settings are always in play.

Manual mode allows precise electronic adjustment of compression and rebound damping for both the front fork and rear shock. Managed through the YRC menu the suspension can be tailored to suit the exact rider style or riding environment required.

Semi-active damping modes
A-1 is a sporty mode that is designed to give confidence and feedback on twisties and secondary roads, with a high degree of front and rear feel, and good chassis stability during acceleration and braking.

A-2 is best suited to sporty riding on a typical highway.

A-3 is designed for touring conditions with an emphasis on comfort and stability.

Three-piece belly pan
The new MT-10 SP is also equipped with an exclusive three-piece belly pan that gives a more aggressive race-bred look to this top of the range flagship model and additionally protects the oil cooler.

Braided brake hoses
Braided brake hoses are fitted as standard, giving the rider a high level of feel at the lever, and offering a higher level of performance in track riding events where intensive use of the brakes results in extremely high temperatures.

Exclusive colours and graphics

Yamaha introduce R6 RACE and R6 GYTR for 2022

Unrivalled heritage, dominant performance

Yamaha’s total commitment to racing is second to none. The company has been racing and winning ever since it was founded in 1955, and in 2021 Yamaha reinforced its status as one of the most committed brands in MotoGP, FIM Superbike World Championship and FIM Supersport World Championship – as well as underlining its number one position in many national championships including BSB.

Throughout its history Yamaha has continued to devote energy and resources into racing, to support the passion of track-oriented riders all around the world from the bLU cRU series to World Championships, and the benefits of this philosophy can be seen in the latest R-Series Supersport bikes. Each one of these high performance models has been developed using the most advanced engine and chassis technology that was originally tried and tested on Yamaha’s factory race bikes. This constant technology transfer from track to street is what gives every R-Series the edge over the competition.

Yamaha win 5th consecutive WorldSSP title
As well as running its own race teams, Yamaha has a long history of promoting the interests of national and international supersport racing series – as well as supporting racers and teams in WorldSSP. This factory backing has been rewarded once again with Dominique Aegerter winning the 2021 WorldSSP Championship on board his Ten Kate Yamaha WorldSSP Supported Team Yamaha R6 – the fifth consecutive year that Yamaha machinery has won this prestigious title, dominating the series since the new R6 was introduced back in 2017.

For 2022 Yamaha will continue its total commitment to supersport riders and teams at every level with the production of the R6 RACE and the R6 GYTR – two exclusive track machines with class-leading performance.

R6 RACE: R/World Only
The Yamaha R6 has dominated WorldSSP for many years, and is the bike of choice for every rider who is serious about winning. With its remarkable track record, it is no surprise that the majority of entrants in this class, both at national and international level, choose to race the R6.

Its pure race-bred specification includes a high performance 599cc engine featuring lightweight forged pistons, titanium valves and a 13.1:1 compression ratio, and with its Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake (YCC-I) and Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) as well as a slipper clutch, close ratio 6-speed transmission and Quick Shift System (QSS) for full throttle upshifts, the R6 is built to outperform the competition.

The compact aluminium Deltabox chassis benefits from a magnesium subframe and aluminium fuel tank, as well as high-specification R1-type 43 mm KYB adjustable front forks and an adjustable KYB rear shock for precision handling and cornering – and the radial mount front brake calipers with 320 mm discs produce immense stopping power and contribute significantly towards lower lap times.

The R6 RACE will be available in sleek Tech Black with gold coloured forks for 2022, and will be supplied in track-ready trim with non-essential road components excluded – such as headlight, position lights, mirrors, horn, licence plate holder, tandem seat and tandem footrests. This reduces weight in order to further maximise performance, making this non-homologated machine ideal for track day riders, as well as being the perfect base model for racers who want to personalise it to their own specification.

Deliveries will commence from February 2022. Prices may vary per region, please contact the national Yamaha distributor for full information.

R6 GYTR: Ultimate Racing Supersport
To ensure the continued domination of the R6 at international and national level the new R6 GYTR will be available for 2022, exclusively from YAMAHA PRO SHOP dealerships. Designed for a wide selection of customers from track day riders through to racers, the R6 GYTR is also the clear choice for more demanding competitors who want to take the bike’s performance to an even higher level by fitting a range of engine, suspension or other components from the GYTR line-up.

R6 GYTR comes fully equipped with a wide range of high-performance GYTR (Genuine Yamaha Technology Racing) parts, including a programmable Superstock ECU with a cable interface enabling the rider to optimise engine performance, as well as a racing wiring harness.

The lightweight performance enhancing titanium Akrapovič racing exhaust system produces around 100Db or less – and block-off plates for the Air Intake System (AIS) are fitted, allowing the removal of various hoses and canisters. Racing sprockets with a special 520 chain are featured, as well as high specification stainless steel brake lines for improved brake performance and precise feedback. The GYTR ABS Emulator will allow the ABS pump removal for even further weight reduction. And the GYTR race seat and fully adjustable billet rear sets give the ideal racing position while the shift pattern can be reversed as well. To get the engine in motion just push the GYTR start/stop button which along with the special GYTR fuel cap allows for a full keyless system.

The R6 GYTR is supplied with a lightweight primer white carbon reinforced glass fibre cowling, enabling riders and teams to apply their desired race livery and logos. Other FIM required parts are included as well, such as the front brake lever guard and rear sprocket protector.

To ensure this race machine matches customers’ expectations and preferences, the GYTR line up allows further upgrades. Full details can be found at www.yamaha-racing.com/gytr/gytr_supersport/.

The R6 GYTR will be available exclusively through Yamaha PRO SHOP dealerships, the first and only place that racers and track days riders need to go for all of their racing needs. Each GYTR PRO SHOP is run by people who eat, sleep and breathe racing, and are involved in racing activities. Furthermore, those special dealerships have direct contact with Yamaha Road Racing Technical Service – the European organisation responsible for WorldSBK, WorldSSP and EWC programmes – so they have the understanding and knowledge required to prepare your personalised racing machine to the highest level.

Four YAMAHA PRO SHOPS have already been appointed in UK: Crescent Motorcycles, in Verwood, Dorset and Padgett’s Motorcycles in Batley, West Yorkshire, and Raceways Motorcycles in Fleetwood, Lancashire and Tamworth Yamaha in Tamworth, West Midlands.

New Yamaha TMAX and TMAX Tech MAX Sport Scooters

Straight to the MAX.
During its 20 years as Europe’s most successful Sport Scooter, the TMAX has constantly evolved and improved to meet the changing needs of many thousands of customers who have chosen to ride this iconic machine.

For 2022 the TMAX benefits from a radical new Supersport-inspired design together with a more compact new body as well as updated wheels and suspension that deliver sportier handling performance.

It’s also the smartest and highest specification Yamaha Sport Scooter, and is equipped with full-colour 7-inch connected TFT instruments offering Full-map Garmin Navigation.* Sportier, slimmer and smarter, the 8th generation TMAX and TMAX Tech MAX are equipped to deliver the ultimate fully-automatic riding experience.

Rediscovering the essential TMAX
The two-wheel world changed forever when the first TMAX was revealed back in 2001. Never before had anyone seen anything like it. Here was a machine like no other, offering thrilling and easy to use performance, together with serious long-distance high-speed capabilities and unbeatable day-to-day convenience. Many had thought it impossible to create such a hybrid vehicle that could bring the scooter and motorcycle worlds together for the very first time.

Ever since the company was founded, Yamaha’s innovative designers have established a reputation for creating some of the world’s most exciting and radical new concepts that have opened up whole new segments in the marketplace. Examples include the company’s lightweight Deltabox frame technology that totally transformed the supersport bike scene in the 1980s.

So when the world witnessed the launch of the original TMAX – and the emergence of an all-new category 20 years ago – few people were surprised to discover that the first ever Sport Scooter was created by Yamaha Motor Company.

Sportier performance, more dynamic looks and connected technology
The 2022 TMAX remains true to the original concept that has made this revolutionary machine one of Yamaha’s best-selling models. The very special combination of a high-powered twin-cylinder engine mounted rigidly to a lightweight chassis and dressed in the most beautifully designed body is what makes the TMAX such an enduring success.

Since its introduction in 2001 this game-changing Yamaha has been the best-selling Sport Scooter every year for two decades, and the new higher specification model is fully equipped to reinforce the TMAX’s position at the top of the sales charts. Attracting a fiercely loyal and knowledgeable following throughout Europe, TMAX continues to provide both new and returning customers with a thrilling riding experience, together with Yamaha’s outstanding quality and highest levels of comfort and convenience.

Compact and dynamic new body
The TMAX’s all-new body is more compact than ever, and features a radical new face with aggressively styled wings and prominent angular air intakes, as well as slimmer dual LED headlights with integrated flashers that give an even more imposing and commanding Supersport-inspired look.

While still being instantly recognisable as the iconic TMAX, virtually every body panel and exterior part is redesigned for 2022 to give this best-selling model a more dynamic and edgy appearance that is bound to draw favourable comparisons with some of today’s leading supersport motorcycles. And that is exactly what makes the TMAX popular with Europe’s riders – it is a machine that offers the very best of both worlds by combining outstanding high speed performance, stability and sports handling of a motorcycle and the simplicity and user-friendliness of a scooter.

As well as its bold new face the TMAX features an all-new windscreen that contributes towards its compact new look and enhances ride quality – and there’s also a much slimmer waist section that improves rider mobility. The newly designed smoother tail section with its T-shaped rear light emphasises the clean and sporty lines – and new boomerangs and redesigned panels blend perfectly with the rest of the new body to give the 2022 model a fresh and attractive new look that continues the legendary TMAX bloodline while projecting a confident and contemporary look.

Extreme Yellow colour
To pay homage to the original model that totally transformed the marketplace and introduced a whole new way of living and riding, the new TMAX will be available in Extreme Yellow. This strong and bold colour will always be associated with the world’s first Sport Scooter, and perfectly captures the dynamic and fun-loving spirit of Europe’s number one scooter. Also available in Icon Blue and Sword Grey.

Connected 7-inch full colour TFT instruments
The new TMAX gets a significant upgrade with a best-in-class connected 7-inch full colour TFT screen that displays a range of easy to read data. Riders can select one of three display styles to suit their personal preferences. All three display a central digital speedometer – the Sporty style features a radial block-type tachometer, while the Intelligent style has a more subtle needle style tachometer, and the Authentic style displays a conventional looking needle tachometer.

Each display incorporates a wide range of running information, and the Intelligent style uniquely incorporates an animated visualiser that constantly changes appearance to enhance the feeling of rider-machine harmony and provide an added dimension to every journey.

Smartphone connectivity
TMAX riders can connect their smartphone to the 7-inch full-colour screen via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or the USB port located in the waterproof front storage compartment, which also features a dedicated smartphone holder.

After the smartphone has been connected, the rider can use the joystick and home button on the left handlebar to select chosen functions, including playing music, receiving notifications, checking on local weather and more. To listen to music or respond to calls a headset** connected via Bluetooth is required – and texts can be displayed when the TMAX is parked.

Full-map Garmin Navigation*
The new connected TMAX enables riders to access Full-map Garmin Navigation that gives spoken turn-by-turn directions through a Bluetooth connected headset** linked to the TMAX. This state-of-the-art system features live traffic updates and offers timesaving detour options. Garmin’s PhotoReal Junction View realistically depicts junctions and interchanges along the route for easy navigation, and a bright coloured arrow notifies the TMAX rider of the appropriate lane to be in for the next exit.

Garmin’s Rider Alerts provide a wide range of information on upcoming hazards along the route such as sharp bends, and also displays notifications regarding speed limits, nearby schools and more. The fuel tracking function estimates distance before a refill is required, and suggests places to stop. The TMAX’s Full-map Garmin Navigation system also shows real-time weather conditions as well as a daily forecast, making it a valuable asset for every journey.

The 7-inch TFT screen’s full-colour display gives a clear and easy to read navigation information, while continuing to show machine running information along the top and sides of the screen – and the app can be started and menus selected via the handlebar mounted joystick.

* Full-map Garmin Navigation requires a subscription service agreement and is not offered in all countries. Some navigation features are not available in all countries, please check with Garmin for availability.

** Headset not included with the TMAX.

Lightweight Spin Forged wheels
The TMAX’s sporty and precise handling performance is further refined by the fitting of new lightweight 10-spoke Spin Forged wheels that have been manufactured using Yamaha-exclusive technology – a process that makes it possible to produce wheels with much thinner sections while offering the same strength. These new lighter wheels reduce unsprung weight for more responsive suspension action – and the moment of inertia is reduced by approximately 10% at the front and 6% at the rear, to give a sportier ride and lighter feeling handling.

Newly developed suspension settings and new Bridgestone tyres
Equipped with high-specification 41 mm upside down forks and a single shock link-type rear system, the TMAX’s motorcycle-type suspension delivers class-leading handling characteristics and excellent stability at all speeds. For 2022 the new TMAX runs with revised suspension settings that have been developed to provide a higher degree of front end feel combined with enhanced agility. This has been achieved with an increased damping force that gives a slightly firmer feel to the suspension action.

The TMAX’s sporty handling and high-speed stability are also enhanced with the use of new model-specific Bridgestone Battlax SC2 tyres that have been developed alongside the Yamaha-exclusive Spin Forged wheels and revised suspension settings.

Sportier riding position
A revised riding position has been developed in order to enable the rider to enjoy the full sports potential of the TMAX’s powerful 560cc EURO5 engine and lightweight aluminium chassis. All three points of the rider triangle have been moved in order to create a slightly more forward-leaning body position. This has been achieved by the use of new-shape forged aluminium handlebars with a reduced backsweep and lower upsweep, as well as a longer main seat and longer footboards that offer more freedom of movement.

This sportier forward-leaning riding position together with the new handlebar shape gives the rider a higher level of feedback from the front wheel, enabling them to feel more connected with the road surface – and the high quality of the forged aluminium handlebars underlines the premium finish and best-in-class specification of this best-selling Sport Scooter.

Adjustable rider’s backrest
The longer main seat features an adjustable rider’s backrest with a total of 30 mm front/rear movement, giving added support when accelerating and extra comfort during longer rides. Together with the longer footboards and new handlebars, the longer seat improves the ergonomics and enables riders with different physiques to find the best riding position – as well as giving all riders greater freedom to adjust their posture to suit different riding conditions.

The TMAX’s slimmer waist section and narrower seat around the thigh area also improves the rider’s leg reach to the ground, and for increased passenger comfort on longer rides the footpegs are lowered by 5 mm and the hip position is raised by 15 mm.

Compact new low-noise adjustable windscreen
The TMAX is fitted with a newly designed adjustable screen that contributes to the new model’s more compact body design. A key feature on the new screen is a central air intake that is designed to reduce wind pressure on the rider’s upper body at higher speeds for a more comfortable and enjoyable ride. Another feature of the new screen design is that it reduces wind noise and contributes towards the new model’s better acoustics – enabling the rider to enjoy various smartphone audio services when using a Bluetooth helmet intercom system linked to the TMAX.

Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T) with APSG
Europe’s number one Sport Scooter gets the full ride-by-wire technology package in the form of a new Accelerator Position Sensor Grip (APSG) that is linked to the proven Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle (YCC-T). This new APSG replaces the conventional cable and pulley system, and features a magnet and sensor that detects throttle inputs and transmits the data to the YCC-T.

This lightweight unit features a spring, slider and gear that give varying degrees of resistance so that is offers excellent controllability together with the intuitive feel of a traditional cable throttle.

Supersport-bike style combination headlights & T-shaped rear unit
TMAX is the most advanced scooter ever built by Yamaha, and the look and feel of the 2022 model takes one step closer to the motorcycle world with its aggressive new face that wouldn’t look out of place parked next to an R-Series supersport bike.

Newly designed slimmer twin-eye LED headlights feature mono-focus lenses that project a brilliant beam of light for excellent night-time riding vision and 24 hour visibility. The compact and sporty design features integrated flashers for a beautifully refined look that underlines the premium finish and high status of this class-leading Sport Scooter.

The view of the TMAX rear end is just as impressive as the front, and the new tail light features a model-exclusive T-shaped design with integrated flashers that reinforces the strong and bold presence of this high performance machine.

High performance 560cc EURO5 engine
The original TMAX was the first scooter to offer motorcycle performance with scooter convenience. Throughout its 20-year reign as the undisputed King of Sport Scooters this outstandingly successful machine has consistently offered Europe’s riders the best package of sporty performance, first-class engineering and premium ride quality.

A key feature of the powerful 560cc parallel twin cylinder engine is its even-firing 360-degree crank with a horizontally-opposed reciprocating piston balancer. Used on no other motorcycle or scooter, this unique design helps to cancel out vibration without the need for a conventional rotary balancer – thereby substantially reducing engine height and enabling the use of a larger underseat storage area. By adopting this TMAX-exclusive layout, Yamaha’s engineers have been able to create an engine that is powerful, compact and smooth-running – the ideal qualities for a Sport Scooter.

The original TMAX was also the first Sport Scooter to feature its engine mounted rigidly into a tubular chassis, a key feature that enabled riders to enjoy motorcycle-type performance for the first time.

Distinctive exhaust sound
The TMAX is known for its powerful sound quality with a clear and deep exhaust note that is unique to the this iconic Sport Scooter, and its distinctive tonality accentuates the thrill of the ride and creates a direct connection between the rider and the engine.

With its 360-degree crank and horizontally-opposed reciprocating piston balancer, the TMAX engine configuration is inherently a mechanically quiet design, and during the development of the 560cc engine attention was focused on creating a specially tuned sound that complements and enhances the sportiness of the TMAX. This clean and deep sound conveys a feeling of power at low rpm – and the intensity increases as the throttle is twisted, giving a thrilling and satisfying ride at all speeds.

Smart Key keyless operation and newly designed control switches
Keyless operation enables the rider to access their scooter as long as they have the Smart Key with them – and for 2022 the TMAX takes scooter convenience to the next level with its newly designed switches that simplify the whole process. A new centre switch brings many of the functions together so that the rider can now turn the main power on and off, activate the main switch and handlebar steering lock, and open the seat with fewer operational steps.

Electrically operated aero-style fuel cap
TMAX is the first Yamaha motorcycle or scooter to be equipped with a smart aero-style fuel cap that automatically opens if the hinge is flipped up within two minutes of the main switch being turned off. This flush-fitting fuel cap can also be accessed at any time as long as the user has the Smart Key on them – and the steering lock or main stand lock are active. There’s also an alarm that sounds if the fuel cap hasn’t been closed properly when the main switch is turned on.

Yamaha Motor’s SpinForged Wheels

An aluminium “bartender” whose work led to lighter weight
Developed for the all-new 2021 MT-09 motorcycle, Yamaha’s SpinForged Wheels established a new and innovative way to reduce weight through the flow forming process they are manufactured with. One of the key drivers that led to the successful application of this method with a mass-production motorcycle for the first time in the world was the development of a special aluminium alloy tailored specifically for flow forming by Yamaha’s in-house materials research departments. In this issue, we introduce the aluminium specialist at Yamaha who played a central role in the development process for creating these new lightweight wheels and some of the challenges she faced.

Harnessing the talent of an aluminium research specialist
“Just changing a few conditions can completely alter how aluminium reacts, or its ‘personality’ so to speak,” says Kahori Oshima of Yamaha Motor’s Materials Division. She speaks of the metal as if gleefully introducing a friend or close acquaintance. “It can be really sensitive sometimes, often giving us zero margin for adjustments.” Despite this “personality”, aluminium is an essential material used to create our motorcycles, outboard motors and various other Yamaha products.

Since joining the company, Oshima has worked as a materials researcher specialising in aluminium and her work and findings have won her praise and trust from Yamaha’s development and manufacturing arms. “She’s like a bartender for aluminium and her skills at making these ‘cocktails’ are something Yamaha is very proud of,” proclaims her superior.

Further, while the material itself may be spoken of as simply “aluminium”, what is required of the material can greatly differ depending on the product in question, where a part is to be used, and the machining method called for. “Yamaha has a massive collection of aluminium ‘recipes’ created by our predecessors and this is one of our strengths,” continues Oshima. “We have an ethos here of aluminium being an area of manufacturing that we must never be outclassed in, and I think what lies behind that is the fact that Yamaha has long done casting all on our own. That confidence and pride pushes us.“

Working with aluminium entails carefully controlling the temperature of the red-hot molten metal, mixing the secret blend of additional elements in, and then heat-treating the formed piece to finish it. Oshima’s task as a researcher is to call on her academic knowledge as well as apply new ideas to find the right balance of stiffness and flex while pursuing not only excellent overall strength and toughness but also beauty.

Innovations born on the factory floor
The new aluminium wheels fitted to the latest MT-09 are machined using flow forming and are a standout manifestation of Oshima’s research.

In developing this model, Yamaha embarked on a new and ambitious challenge of extreme weight reduction, driven by the idea that if you can somehow augment the base characteristics of the aluminium, it will spur new innovations to come from the factory floor itself. The engineering and manufacturing departments both threw themselves into the project and successfully created a special aluminium alloy and heat treatment process even their predecessors had yet to concoct. This combination enabled the company to offer the first mass-produced flow-formed motorcycle wheels. Naming them Yamaha SpinForged Wheels, each boasts rims just 2 mm thick (compared to 3.5 mm with the outgoing model) and the front and rear wheels together are some 0.7 kg lighter. Weight reduction is among the most challenging tasks in the industry and such a success makes these wheels worthy of being hailed as innovative.

“What we struggled with the most was having no metrics to go on. Without them for evaluation, we can’t figure out where we need to set our target, so it was certainly difficult to develop a material and build an appropriate method of evaluation at the same time,” confesses Oshima. However, the struggle and hard work made the achievement that much more rewarding and she has immense pride in these wheels.

“For example, if it’s strength alone, aluminium can’t beat iron. But on the other hand, aluminium has advantages like its lightness, corrosion resistance, high machinability and its beauty. Even if our Monozukuri changes in the future, I’m certain aluminium will remain a material of choice. I believe my role as a materials researcher is to extract and enhance that potential.”

Yamaha Motor’s casting journey
Our roots in casting technology lie in the techniques used to cast piano frames at Nippon Gakki Co., Ltd. (today’s Yamaha Corporation). Those techniques were adapted and applied towards creating the engine and parts for the first Yamaha motorcycle in 1955, the YA-1. Since then, Yamaha has continued to cast a plethora of parts not only for motorcycle engines but also for chassis, marine products, car engines and more – all in-house. The capability to cast both large and small parts and components in-house has made us a rarity among the world’s motorcycle manufacturers.

Producing the wheels for our motorcycles is a good example of this capability. In addition to vacuum die-casting aluminium wheels, Yamaha succeeded in casting magnesium wheels for mass production with the YZF-R1 in 2015, something once thought unfeasible for a high-volume product. The flow forming process for creating Yamaha SpinForged Wheels was also already often employed when producing wheels for cars, but motorcycle wheels require an appealing design on both sides, thus adapting flow forming for our industry presented high hurdles. To clear them, Yamaha carefully selected an aluminium variant to work with, conducted repeated experimentation of different alloy combinations in search of the right strength and lasting toughness, and devised the ideal heat treatment method to match. The Yamaha SpinForged Wheel was the result of this work and more.

Yamaha’s factories have given birth to numerous new technologies in the casting field, from our controlled fill (CF) aluminium die-casting technology capable of mass-producing large but thin parts to our all-aluminium DiASil Cylinder, a world first.
