Yamaha celebrates 40 Years of Ténéré

Yamaha is proud to celebrate the 40-year anniversary of the iconic Ténéré. Since its inception in 1983 with the XT600Z, the Ténéré has captivated the hearts and minds of adventure enthusiasts around the globe and this milestone calls for a grand commemoration.

Over the past four decades, the Yamaha Ténéré has forged its legacy as a symbol of the adventure spirit, exploration and resilience. From conquering the treacherous terrains of the Paris-Dakar Rally to inspiring riders to push the boundaries of what is possible, the Ténéré has become a true legend in the motorcycle world.

In the decades since Cyril Neveu claimed a historic double victory in the first and second Paris-Dakar rallies in 1979-80 on the XT500, Team Yamaha has accomplished some incredible rallying achievements. Ténéré icons such as Jean-Claude Olivier, Serge Bacou, and ‘Monsieur Dakar’ Stéphane Peterhansel, whose record of six Yamaha victories that began in 1991 remains unbeaten to this day, took their machines across some of the world’s most demanding terrain. Most recently, legendary adventurer and Yamaha ambassador Nick Sanders finished his latest trip around the globe on his Ténéré 700, while factory riders Pol Tarrés and Alessandro Botturi continue to make rally racing history on their the GYTR-kitted Ténéré 700 World Raid’s.

To celebrate this remarkable journey and these legendary riders together with the Ténéré community, Yamaha has embarked on a 40th Anniversary tour across Europe. A collection of historic Ténéré production models (1983-2010), as well as original Dakar classics will be showcased, allowing enthusiasts to witness first-hand the evolution of this iconic adventure machine.

In addition to a full line-up of the latest Ténéré models that event participants can test ride, the 40th Anniversary tour will also see the public launch of the new Ténéré 700 World Rally. Displayed in striking factory racing colours inspired by the YZE 850 that took Peterhansel to victory in 1993, the Ténéré 700 World Rally is a fusion of Yamaha’s desert racing heritage with modern, world-class performance. A name synonymous with desert racing success and boundary-pushing technology, the latest generation Ténéré 700 represents four decades of experience and success coming together in a machine unrivalled in ability and adventurous spirit.

The Ténéré 40th Anniversary tour made a triumphant stop at the Adventure Bike Rider Festival, the largest adventure riding festival in Europe. The event was a resounding success, with a vibrant atmosphere and an overwhelming sense of excitement among attendees. Yamaha celebrated this momentous occasion alongside the passionate Ténéré community. Festival-goers had the opportunity to experience the Ténéré’s prowess firsthand through thrilling off-road and on-road test rides on the latest Yamaha models. Expert demo rides showcased the Ténéré’s capabilities in challenging terrain and to top it all off, Yamaha’s ambassador, the legendary Nick Sanders, joined the festivities and shared his captivating adventure movie, leaving everyone inspired by his incredible journeys. The Adventure Bike Rider Festival proved to be an unforgettable celebration of Yamaha’s 40-year milestone with the Ténéré, solidifying its legacy as an icon in the world of adventure riding.

The Ténéré 40th Anniversary tour will visit the following upcoming events:

Ténéré Spirit Aguilar de Campoo | 31 June – 1 July | Spain

MaxlRIDE Motofestival | 25-27 August | Germany

Alpes Aventure Motofestival | 8-10 September | France

More events might be added to the schedule throughout the year. For more information please contact your national Yamaha distributor.

Streetfighter V4: sportier and lighter with Ducati Performance accessories

The Streetfighter V4, which in the fifth episode of the Ducati World Première 2023 was the protagonist of the evolution of the entire family with the V4, V4 S and V4 SP2 models, represents a benchmark for performance in the segment of super sports naked bikes. In 2023, the Streetfighter V4 followed in the footsteps of the Panigale V4 family, pushing even further the concepts of the “Fight Formula”, the key elements of which are the Panigale V4 stripped of its fairings, high and wide handlebars, 178 kg in weight, 208 hp Desmosedici Stradale engine, biplane wings and latest generation electronics package.

The Ducati Performance accessories catalogue offers numerous ideas for making the Streetfighter V4 even lighter and promoting its sporty nature, with components that enhance its aesthetics and dynamic aspects, transforming each Streetfighter V4 into a truly one-of-a-kind model, according to the taste and personality of the owner.

The Sport package  brings together various accessories to underline the racing soul of the Streetfighter V4, also allowing you to save on the purchase of individual components. This proposal focuses on the refined construction quality of the billet aluminium components, such as the fuel tank cap, the brake and clutch levers and the handlebar counterweights, and on the elegance of the dynamic LED indicators, which are reflected in the carbon fibre of the light license plate holder . The tank cap is equipped with an anti-tampering system, with the key bearing the Ducati shield. Counterweights protect the handlebars in the event of a slide and help to reduce vibrations.

The Streetfighter V4 can become even more aggressive and sporty thanks to numerous carbon fibre parts such as front and rear mudguards (also compatible with the use of track tyres and tyre warmers), instrument cover, which improves aerodynamic protection, tank cover, pinion cover and biplane wings, made of structural carbon fibre. These components, in addition to enhancing the racing personality of the Streetfighter V4, also improve the bike’s power/weight ratio.

The homologated Akrapovič silencers make it possible to further lighten the Streetfighter V4, with a weight saving of 0.8 kg. The titanium alloy body and carbon end caps guarantee lightness and resistance to high temperatures and combined with the honeycomb grille at the gas outlet hole, give the naked supersport bike from Borgo Panigale an even more aggressive look.

The beauty of the Streetfighter V4 is also made up of details that gratify the eye of the most attentive enthusiast: technical parts such as the brake and clutch fluid reservoirs, or the oil filler cap, made from billet aluminium, anodised to maintain the original appearance over time and enhance the racing look of the bike. Those who would like to make the touch on the handlebar even more pleasant can mount a pair of racing grips, designed to reduce perceived vibrations and guarantee optimal grip in all situations, avoiding involuntary slipping of the hands.

Finally, those who wish to harness the power of the Streetfighter V4 on circuit can adopt the full Akrapovič titanium exhaust system, developed in collaboration with Ducati Corse. With a noise level of less than 105 dB, it does not preclude use on days with noise limits, while still guaranteeing a significant increase in performance. The weight saving is 5.5 kg, the power and torque gain at mid-range is 6%. The exhaust is delivered together with a racing-derived polyester air filter and a dedicated mapping, with which all the DTC – DWC – DPL and DSC parameters are adapted to the bike’s increased performance. The exhaust must be fitted with the specific carbon fibre protection.

The entire range of accessories is available on the Ducati.com website, where in the “Configurator” section you can choose your favourite components to make your Streetfighter V4 unique and share them with your nearest dealer.

New Vespa Gtv, Vespa Style Has Never Been So Sporty

Vespa Gtv is the extraordinary combination of legend and modernity: the low headlight and the exposed tubular handlebar combine with sporty finishes and a hi-tech equipment package

New digital instrumentation, full led lights, and keyless system. Powered by a 300 HPE engine with more than 23 HP, the most powerful ever mounted on a VESPA

From its début in 2006, Vespa Gtv has been the ambassador of the purest classicism in the Vespa family thanks to the use of the “faro basso” (low headlight), positioned on the front mudguard, and the exposed metallic tube handlebar, both reminiscent of the style of the most iconic models.

In 2023, Vespa Gtv comes out in an entirely revolutionised version, maintaining the must-have similarities to the origins of the legend, but combining them with an ultra-modern technological equipment package and unprecedented sporty finishes. The result is an extraordinary combination of tradition and modernity, classicism and audacity, which come together in the most authentically sporty Vespa ever.

The new Vespa Gtv is powered by the gritty 300 hpe (High Performance Engine) single-cylinder, with 4-valve timing, liquid cooling, and electronic injection. Accredited with power of 17.5 kW (23.8 HP), it is the highest performance engine every mounted on a Vespa.

An authentic style, even sportier
The new Vespa Gtv evolves under the sign of sportiness and includes the significant stylistic improvements introduced on the new Gts range, with even more painstakingly crafted finishes and a construction quality that rises to never before reached levels.

The light clusters are now full LED, including the characteristic low headlight, whereas the new instrumentation maintains the elegant circular shape, but it is now entirely digital, a solutions that lets you take advantage of the features provided by the Vespa MIA connectivity system, available as an accessory.

The instrumentation is connected to the handlebar using an original offset bracket and it is surrounded by an aggressive looking top fairing with reduced dimensions and a clear racing inspiration. handled by three horizontal slots, it is painted to match the body. The orange coloured top fairing, available as a separate accessory, gives Vespa Gtv an even bolder look.

At the centre of the leg shield, the unmistakable “necktie” has sporty lateral slots and is enhanced by orange-edged decorations. The five-spoke wheel rim design is also new, painted matt black with orange graphics on the channel.

Another distinctive element of the Vespa Gtv is the two-tone single-seater saddle with a racing look and the rear part that is installation ready for a rigid cover colour coded to match the body reminiscent of the typical fairings on competition Vespas. The cover is available as a separate accessory and is removable. In any case, seating is approved for two and it has plenty of comfortable seating room, characterised by a particular technical pattern and horizontal thermobonding, framed by contrasting orange stitching.

The general look of the Vespa Gtv stands out for the matt black trim that characterises the low headlight and rear taillight assembly, the profile along the perimeter of the body, the passenger grab handle and footrests, the silencer cover, the rear view mirrors, the support, and the instrumentation frame.

The new Vespa Gtv is available in the two colour schemes, Beige Avvolgente Opaco and Nero Convinto, with contrasting orange graphics on the front fairing and on the sides.

Hi-tech equipment
Vespa Gtv embraces technology and the vocation to travelling typical of the extremely recent evolution of the Vespa Gts family – the famous “Vespone”. Therefore, the ergonomics are perfect Vespa ergonomics, enhanced by its comfort and large body. The seating is natural and allows for total control of the vehicle and absolute comfort even over long distances.

Convenience and practicality are highlighted by the introduction of the keyless system, which allows the ignition to be switched on without the need for a traditional key. On the back leg shield, the classic ignition key switch is replaced by a practical knob. To start the vehicle, simple press it and turn it to the ON position. The engine starts in the usual way, using the button located on the right hand controls block.

The adoption of a new LCD instrumentation allows a thorough range of trip information to be displayed (maximum speed, average speed, current consumption, average consumption, range, and battery charge state), as well as all the notification relative to calls, messages and music, if the vehicle is connected to the smartphone using the VESPA MIA (available as a separate accessory).

It comes standard with a USB port, located in the storage compartment in the leg back shield, whereas the spacious under-seat compartment has a mat.
On the safety front, it comes standard with ASR electronic traction control and an ABS anti-lock braking system.

The new Vespa Gtv is already available in Vespa showrooms at a price of £6,750 plus road tax and registration.

Designed from the ground-up with a brand-new single engine platform at their heart, these new models are designed to deliver a fun, agile and confidence-inspiring ride for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Together, with class-leading capability, rider-focused technology and category-leading quality and detail, and with a high level of standard specification, long service intervals and a comprehensive warranty, these accessible new models represent incredible value for money and bring Triumph’s iconic style, quality and performance to a whole new generation of Triumph riders.

All combining to deliver that unmistakeable Triumph modern classic style.

Meet Insta360 GO 3: Unleash Your Creativity with the Ultimate Tiny Action Camera

Next-Gen Tiny Camera Gets Flip Screen Action Pod, Longer Battery Life & More

Insta360 is proud to announce the highly anticipated Insta360 GO 3, the latest iteration of its groundbreaking tiny action camera. The tiny but mighty GO 3 takes on-the-go capturing to new heights, building upon the ultra-portability of its predecessor with unparalleled versatility.

Truly tiny, the camera comes in smaller than thumb size and weighs in at only 1.2oz (35g). Its unique magnetic body allows you to effortlessly mount it anywhere, opening up a world of possibilities for capturing unique shots from creative angles. The new Action Pod is the ultimate shooting companion, transforming GO 3 into a more versatile and powerful camera. Using the flip touchscreen, users can control the camera remotely and preview their shot even when GO 3 is mounted in hard-to-reach locations. When running low on power, GO 3 can be mounted in the Pod to keep shooting for up to 170 minutes.

Whether you want to capture immersive first-person POV shots, discover life from your pet’s eyes, or explore new perspectives, GO 3 provides unprecedented flexibility. Insta360 GO 3 is available to order today via Insta360’s official website worldwide, as well as from trusted retailers such as Amazon and select authorized partners.

Unleashing the GO 3 Concept: Limitless Creativity in a Tiny Camera

Capturing moments with GO 3 is effortless. Recording on the go is as simple as pressing the front of the camera body, thanks to QuickCapture. The camera’s lightweight and low-profile design means there’s never a question of whether to take it with you on a day out. Whether you’re playing with your kids or barreling down the trails, GO 3 never detracts from the moment. Any perspective can be captured in vivid 2.7K, perfect for social media sharing.

GO 3 comes with a set of magnetic accessories that truly unlock the camera’s creative potential:

  • Magnet Pendant: A circular magnet that can be worn around the neck and sits beneath clothing, allowing GO 3 to be seamlessly worn on the chest for first-person POV filming.

  • Easy Clip: An accessory designed for hats, snugly fitting GO 3 above the head for a hands-free, high-angle shot.

  • Pivot Stand: A reusable sticky mount with an adjustable design that allows for tricky angles to be shot with ease. Completely redesigned, the stand also unscrews to reveal a 1/4” mounting point for attaching to a selfie stick or tripod.

Multifunctional Action Pod: Remote Preview and Enhanced Control

A completely new innovation, the Action Pod is a hub that takes your shooting capabilities to the next level. A housing, remote control and charger for GO 3 all in one.

With a convenient 2.2″ flip touchscreen, the Action Pod connects to GO 3 over Bluetooth for real-time remote control and live preview. Difficult angles, from a cat’s collar to a kid’s bike, can now be easily framed and mastered. The best part—the Action Pod and the camera are compatible with the same magnetic mounts, ensuring hassle-free setup and enhanced versatility. Running low on power is now easily remedied by simply putting GO 3 into the Action Pod, attaching it to the same mount, and continuing to shoot.

Coupling all of this with an IPX4 water-resistant design for the Pod and IPX8 waterproofing to 16ft (5m) for the camera, GO 3 is perfect for capturing memories anywhere. A signature of Insta360, GO 3 comes equipped with FlowState Stabilization and 360 Horizon Lock, ensuring silky-smooth footage even in the most action-packed scenarios and eliminating unwanted tilting or distortion. A replaceable Lens Guard also comes pre-installed for worry-free shooting.

Remarkable Improvements for Flagship Performance

Insta360 GO 3 addresses the pain points of the GO series, bringing sweeping enhancements to ensure this new generation of tiny camera has staying power. Software optimizations and a resolution upgrade to 2.7K deliver crisp, vibrant videos. With no clip length limitations and a larger 310mAh battery, creators can keep shooting for up to 45 minutes without the Pod—a 50% increase on the previous generation.

Sporting an additional mic, GO 3’s dual microphones offer clearer and crisper audio over its predecessor. Voice Control 2.0 also comes with this upgrade, allowing for complete hands-free operation of GO 3, no matter the situation.

New recording modes are also available, including Pre-recording, Loop Recording and Timed Capture. With Timed Capture, simply schedule GO 3 to power on and start recording at a specific time. No more waking up early to shoot a sunrise timelapse!

A World of Possibilities with the GO 3 Ecosystem

As is the case with all Insta360 cameras, GO 3 is more than just a camera; it’s backed up by Insta360’s powerful app and editing ecosystem, designed to simplify your filmmaking journey.

FreeFrame Mode enables you to modify the aspect ratio of your footage after shooting, so you can edit the same clip for a 9:16 Instagram Reel as a 16:9 YouTube video. Where other action cameras force the user to pre-select the aspect ratio before shooting and only save the content within that aspect ratio, GO 3 saves all the content for sharing in any aspect ratio, offering unmatched flexibility.

Insta360’s infamous AI-powered editing features automatically curate your best clips and edit them into custom reels. The app’s intelligent features and user-friendly interface allow you to focus on your creativity while the technology handles the rest.

There’s also a whole host of creative modes to create inspiring content. TimeShift for hyperlapse montages, AI-powered PureShot HDR for photos with enhanced dynamic range, slow motion up to 120fps and stunning timelapses are all possible with GO 3.

Available Now

Insta360 GO 3 is available for purchase starting today globally. GO 3 comes with the Action Pod included and other useful accessories, including the Magnet Pendant, Easy Clip, Pivot Stand, and Lens Guard. Three storage options are available: 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models, priced at $379.99, $399.99, and $429.99 respectively.

You can secure your GO 3 directly from Insta360’s official website or via platforms such as Amazon and select authorized retailers.

Purchased new by Viccei, operating under the alias of Umberto Zoppi, this Vespa played a significant role in his criminal activities during the planning of the largest heist in history. Having been in a private collection for a number of years, the scooter is estimated to fetch between £5,000 to £6,000 when it goes up for sale next month.

With the original purchase receipt and a mere 205 miles on the odometer, the Vespa remains in impressive condition, offering a tangible connection to the infamous bank robber. Alongside the scooter, an extensive collection of crime memorabilia accompanies the lot, providing a comprehensive glimpse into Viccei’s underground world.

Equally captivating is a 1971 Lambretta Eibar Li150 Special, an iconic scooter with a remarkable connection to the New York Police Department. Estimated between £7,000 – £8,000, the scooter is one of only two known surviving examples of the NYPD Eibar version. The Lambretta represents a significant era in law enforcement history and was as used by the famous ‘Scooter Joe Willins’ in his quest with his partner Kenny Kaufman to clean up the streets of New York in the early 1970s. Meticulously restored by renowned experts at 2nd Avenue Scooters, this exceptional scooter boasts the prestigious Quail Award for Best Scooter.

Complementing its rarity, the lot includes an array of NYPD memorabilia, such as a signed scooter helmet by ‘Scooter Joe,’ offering a unique opportunity to own a piece of captivating law enforcement heritage.

Commenting on the upcoming auction, Paul Diamond, scooter specialist at H&H Classics, said, “Both of these scooters boast a remarkable history linked to the world of law enforcement and we are delighted to offer them for sale. Aside from both being very rare and good examples, their intriguing stories make them a truly unique and compelling addition to any collector’s ensemble.”

Enthusiasts and collectors wishing to bid on any of lots being auctioned can do so in person, online, by telephone, or by leaving a commission bid.

All New CFMOTO NK800 Hits The UK

Boasting a sleek design, powerful two-cylinder engine performance, pin-sharp handling, and cutting-edge technology, the all-new 800NK lineup has entered the European markets, offering a “standard” and soon a high-spec 800NK ADVANCED version.

Introducing the new 800NK line-up
Having first appeared late last year as the NK-C22 concept bike, the production model CFMOTO 800NK has arrived, flanking the small and mid-displacement NK series, with a large displacement product offering to satisfy the needs of riders looking for maximum thrills.

Sporting aggressive naked-bike styling and an impressive list of standard equipment, the CFMOTO 800NK cuts an imposing shape into the highly competitive naked motorcycle market with its striking, arrow-shaped headlight, short tail, and sharp lines.

Ergonomics
Designed to be both imposing to look at and comfortable to ride, the CFMOTO 800NK provides riders with an upright riding position, setting the ideal balance between sportiness and aggression, with a 795 mm seat height to create sure-footed confidence for all riding levels.
Note: CFMOTO offers an optional 820 mm seat for riders needing a higher riding position.

Engine
Providing the punch comes courtesy of a 70 kW (95 hp), 799 cc parallel-twin DOHC engine, delivering 79 Nm at 8,000 rpm of linear thrust throughout the rev range. However, due to its weighing in at only 186 kg, the CFMOTO 800NK SPORT (and a 189 kg ADVANCED version) is no one-round-only heavyweight brawler.

Chassis, Brakes, and Suspension
Thanks to a 43 mm fully adjustable KYB (Kayaba) upside-down fork and rear shock absorber paired with a lightweight chromoly-steel-tube frame, aluminum-alloy wheels, and MAXXIS high-performance tires, the CFMOTO 800NK provides fleet-footed handling and agility when the gloves come off. ABS-assisted J.Juan radial-mount, four-piston front brake calipers with 320 mm discs are at hand to provide ample stopping power.

Rider Aids
Both 800NK versions come with a slipper clutch, cruise control, and three riding modes – Sport, Street, and Rain – all features as standard. Additionally, the ADVANCED version comes with a Quickshifter and a larger dashboard with more connectivity features.

How does the 800NK SPORT differ from the 800NK ADVANCED?
The 800NK ADVANCED offers advanced connectivity due to its 8-inch TFT display with Apple CarPlay functionality. Due to its larger dashboard, the 800NK ADVANCED is equipped with a different handlebar. Additionally, it comes standard with a Quickshifter and a steering damper. The overall weight difference is 3 kg.

Accessories
The new 800NK lineup comes with a range of high quality accessories to further enhance the ride and sporty aesthetics of the bikes. Accessories that will soon be available include a Rear Seat Cover, Ergo Rider’s Seat, Handlebar End Mirrors, Adjustable Brake and Clutch Levers, Drop Bar, Axles, Crash Bung Kit, Adjustable Footpeg System, and Front Spoiler. These accessories will provide riders with the option to personalise their 800NK, both in terms of style and functionality, to suit their preferences and enhance their overall riding experience.

Pricing, Logistics, and Availability

The CFMOTO 800NK (SPORT) will be available at authorized CFMOTO dealers in the UK in July 2023 priced at £6,999 with 3.9% PP/4.9% PCP finance deals currently available for customers. Availability and pricing details for the ADVANCED version will soon be announced through a separate press release.

BMW Motorrad celebrates one millionth GS with boxer engine.

World premiere of the new BMW R 1300 GS on 28 September 2023 at BMW Motorrad Welt in Berlin.

Today, on 21 June 2023, the 1,000,000th GS equipped with a boxer engine rolled off the production line at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau – a BMW R 1250 GS.
BMW motorcycles have been manufactured in Berlin since 1969 and the BMW Motorrad GS models with boxer engines since 1980. Elemental, authentic motorcycles, which possess incomparable all-round qualities have spurred on countless motorbike enthusiasts on trips to distant countries, spectacular adventure trips and expeditions to the remotest regions of our planet over the past decades. The latest edition of the now legendary BMW GS with boxer engine – the R 1300 GS – will be presented on 28 September 2023 at the grand opening of the new BMW Motorrad Welt in Berlin.

The BMW GS with boxer engine: The legendary combination of road, off-road and long-haul expertise.
Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad: “With the R 80 G/S and its unique combination of on-road and off-road suitability, everyday qualities and long-distance touring abilities, BMW Motorrad created the new motorcycle genre of touring enduros in 1980. The BMW GS with boxer engine became an icon, which achieved global success in this segment. What is more: The BMW GS became a legend and at the same time an indispensable cornerstone in the BMW Motorrad model range. Its outstanding talents, such as dynamic riding performance, brawny off-road qualities, superior long-distance comfort and enormous robustness, have since been continuously developed by BMW Motorrad and transferred to other BMW Motorrad model series with great success. I am therefore very pleased that today, and especially in our “100 Years of BMW Motorrad” anniversary year, we are able to contribute a major milestone to the corporate history of the BMW Group with the one millionth BMW GS motorbike with a boxer engine. I am equally pleased that the unique history of BMW Motorrad models with boxer engines will soon be supplemented by an exciting chapter with numerous innovations with the new R 1300 GS.”

The one millionth BMW GS with a boxer engine is an R 1250 GS in Triple Black Style and was duly celebrated today, 21 June 2023, during a works meeting at the BMW Motorrad plant in Berlin-Spandau.

The new BMW R 1300 GS: Premiere at the opening ceremony of BMW Motorrad Welt Berlin on 28 September 2023.
The celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of BMW Motorrad are continuing at pace. After the big party at the BMW Motorrad Days, where thousands of motorcycle fans from all over the world are expected from 7 to 9 July 2023, BMW Motorrad Welt will officially open its doors on 28 September. In the new “heart of the brand” – located directly next to the BMW Motorrad plant site in Berlin-Spandau – the eagerly awaited new BMW R 1300 GS will be presented at an exclusive opening event. Interested fans will have the opportunity to follow the opening ceremony via livestream on the BMW Group and BMW Motorrad social media channels. From 30 September 2023, BMW Motorrad Welt in Berlin will then be open to all visitors.

The BMW R 80 G/S: Initial spark for a new motorcycle segment.
In autumn 1980 BMW Motorrad presented the R 80 G/S, a motorcycle which combined two very special areas of riding for the first time: Off-road and on-road. What began with 798 cubic centimetres of displacement and 50 hp has developed over more than four decades into a fascinating high-tech touring enduro of the calibre of the current BMW R 1250 GS. Complemented by state-of-the-art chassis technology and electronic control systems such as ABS, traction control, engine drag torque control, semi-active suspension and a great deal more. It is also thanks to this ongoing and consistent advancement that the BMW GS models with boxer engine have advanced to become the most sought-after touring enduros in the world to this day.

Electronic innovation, the Ducati way

Every Ducati is a magical mix of beauty and technology. A unique balance that the Bologna-based company has been able to build up over the years, combining attention to design with the constant work of R&D in the field of innovation.

From the Multistrada V4 to the Scrambler, passing through the Panigale V4, each model is designed to offer Ducatisti only the best, thanks to sophisticated solutions capable of giving them unforgettable experiences every time they are on the bike.

In this sense, electronics play a fundamental role, and it is for this reason that, especially in the last 15 years, Ducati has invested daily in the development of cutting-edge technologies.

The electronic solutions make it possible to refine the character of each bike according to the intended use: whether it is to enable the best performance on the track with the Panigale V4 or to provide the most comfortable and exciting journey possible with the Multistrada V4.

Thanks to this awareness, over the years Ducati has introduced many of the solutions that later became standard on motorcycles in the various segments.

The innovations introduced by Ducati
In 2008, with the 1098R, Ducati was the first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce Traction Control on a motorcycle, moving the performance and safety benchmarks of super sports bikes forward. Just one year later, the LED headlight  introduced on the Streetfighter 1100 represented another Ducati world first. In 2010, Ducati presented the first motorcycle in the world capable of “changing character” thanks to the presence of the Riding Modes: the Multistrada 1200 S. Other electronic innovations introduced by Ducati include the TFT instrumentation of the Diavel, in 2011, another example of a technical solution that has now become a standard on motorcycles in every segment. In 2012, the 1199 Panigale, which received the prestigious design award, the Compasso d’Oro, saw the introduction in the motorcycle field of the Full-LED light cluster and electronic engine brake management.
Since safety is a very important aspect for Ducati, in 2014 the Bologna-based company, together with Dainese, introduced the first motorcycle with an integrated system capable of communicating with the airbag  in the jacket: the Multistrada 1200 Touring D|Air. At the time, airbag systems did not guarantee current safety standards, while the sophisticated Multistrada 1200 Touring D|Air system sent the activation signal in just 20 milliseconds in the event of a crash or slide. In 2018 Ducati introduced the Slide By Brake system that allows controlled power sliding under braking on the Panigale V4, while in 2020, with the Multistrada V4, Ducati was the first motorcycle manufacturer to introduce radars to the world of two wheels, which allowed the implementation of the Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection systems. 2023 saw the arrival of extended deactivation on the Multistrada V4 Rally, a sophisticated system which, by switching off the two rear cylinders, reduces fuel consumption and heat. These are the  innovations introduced by Ducati in the world of two wheels, many of which are now standard on motorcycles “over 500 cc”.

In addition to working to introduce new technical solutions to the market, Ducati R&D works every day to evolve and perfect existing bikes, improving them year after year. This is what happened, for example, with Multistrada V4 owners, who received the Minimum Preload and Easy Lift systems free of charge when they were introduced on later models, and who continue to benefit from navigation system upgrades. Or the evolution that the Panigale V4 has undergone from 2018 to today.

Creating safe, high-performance and accessible motorcycles is the basis of the development of every Ducati, which thanks to all these innovations and the continuous development of solutions already on the market, today offers a range in which each model represents a technological benchmark in the segment to which it belongs, also in terms of safety, given that all Ducati motorcycles are equipped as standard with ABS Cornering and Traction Control.

Ducati’s approach is to develop internally the technologies to be introduced on its motorcycles, together with its suppliers,  simultaneously creating know-how within the Company. Concrete examples are the close collaboration with Pirelli, Brembo, Bosch and other suppliers with which the Bologna-based manufacturer participates in the development of components which are first mounted on the Ducati bikes. This approach is even more valuable when it comes to electronics because it allows Ducati to have full control over the technologies implemented, thus being able to customize them without constraints depending on the application, from the Panigale V4 to the Scrambler via the Streetfighter, Diavel, DesertX and the Multistrada V4, which represents the maximum expression of Ducati electronic technology.

Electrical & Electronic Systems: development and creation of expertise
The drive towards innovation in electronics goes hand in hand with the growth of the Electrical & Electronic Systems department, which has seen its resources quadruple in just over ten years. Through the work of this department, which is part of R&D, Ducati studies, develops and introduces new and often innovative systems into series production, obviously also drawing on experience from racing competition. The constant work of developing and refining the technical and technological solutions has introduced a very broad range of functions and devices across the entire range, which today varies from the state-of-the-art available on the Panigale V4 and Multistrada V4, to systems such as Ride-by-wire, Traction Control, Quickshift, Riding Mode, Cornering ABS and TFT instruments also on more accessible models such as the Scrambler.

Ducati innovation also involves new working methods. In addition to developing new technologies internally, Ducati has had several internal laboratories within the company for several years to carry out tests during the development phase, without necessarily having to rely on external resources or suppliers. One of these is Electrical & Electronic Testing which is responsible for testing the electrical and electronic components of the bikes in the range, putting them to the test to measure their quality and duration over time. The purpose of this activity is twofold: to quickly solve the problems that may arise during the development phases and to monitor the quality of the already existing models.

Among the tests that are carried out by highly specialized personnel in the Electrical & Electronic Testing laboratory there are those for verifying the functioning of the components in extreme thermal and environmental conditions, made possible thanks to the use of cells capable of replicating temperatures ranging from –40°C to 180°C and atmospheric events such as heavy rain or salt mist. The components are also put under stress by means of robots which repeat operations thousands of times, such as, for example, the rotation of the handlebar to check the correct reliability of the wiring, or other operations such as the brake lever to turn on the brake light, in order to verify its resilience in real conditions of use.

Furthermore, inside the laboratory, we go as far as controlling each individual chip, even by sectioning them to analyse them under a microscope and verify their exact composition and consistency with the development specifications.

Software debugging and mobile app activities are also carried out within Electrical & Electronic Testing. Over the years, connectivity is also becoming an increasingly important aspect in the motorcycle field and, given the growing number of smartphone manufacturers and the constant updating of the various operating systems, the presence of a group of people within the Company who deal with this aspect represents an added value to always keep up with the times. An example of this work can be found in navigation systems: from the Phone Mirroring solution adopted on the Multistrada V4, which makes it possible to transform the dashboard into a colour map navigator containing all the information required for riding the motorbike, to the Turn-by-Turn  system which was introduced in 2023 on the DesertX and Diavel V4. These two solutions allow Ducati not to be bound to a specific operating system but allow compatibility with iOS and Android systems and the continuous evolution of the software which is then updated free of charge for customers.

All of this is “the Ducati way”. A working methodology that has allowed Ducati to create increasingly innovative products with improved quality year after year, testifying to how the strategic commitments of the Bologna-based manufacturer, from racing competition to R&D, passing through investments in experimentation, are aimed, year after year, at giving Ducatisti the bikes of their dreams.

Innovations introduced by Ducati as world firsts:

  • 2008, DTC Traction Control – 1098 R
  • 2009, LED headlight – Streetfighter 1100
  • 2010, Riding Modes – Multistrada 1200 S
  • 2011, TFT instrumentation – Diavel
  • 2012, Electronic Engine Brake Management (EBC) and full-LED headlight – Panigale 1199
  • 2021, Adaptive Cruise Control/Blind Spot Detection – Multistrada V4
  • 2023, Extended Deactivation – Multistrada V4 Rally

UK Motorcycle Manufacturers Call On Minister

UK motorcycle manufacturers call on minister for proportional and technology-neutral approach to phase out.

The Motorcycle Industry Association (MCIA) and its major UK manufacturing members today met with Rt Hon Jesse Norman MP to discuss the Government’s plans for phasing out mopeds and motorcycles by 2035. Rider representative groups, such as the National Motorcyclists Council, were also present.

Manufacturers put forward several key considerations deemed essential for a successful and balanced transition if harm to the sector is to be avoided:

  1. Environmental Contribution: Manufacturers recognised their economic and job creation contributions, while acknowledging their minimal impact on total UK domestic transport emissions, accounting for only 0.4% of the total. The phase out dates for the industry should be proportionate to its emissions, miles travelled, and the urban mobility benefits it provides.
  2. Complex vehicles and unique challenges: Unlike the automotive sector, the motorcycle industry deals with complex vehicles that require a bespoke approach, similar to aviation and heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). Transitioning to zero emissions presents numerous technical, architectural, and safety challenges that need to be addressed comprehensively.
  3. Cost and commercial viability: Large capacity electric powered two-wheelers (EPTWs) face a significant price point hurdle due to supply chain development, making them commercially unviable for both manufacturers and consumers. All technologies, including electric, should be equally supported, as electric solutions have proven effective for lower powered L-Category vehicles, but not for high-powered ones.
  4. Technology-neutral approach: Manufacturers advocated for a technology-neutral approach that considers clean and synthetic fuels alongside battery technology and alternative fuels. It is crucial to allow time for battery technology and alternative fuels to catch up before committing to an outcome that may adversely affect the economy and the market.
  5. Potential market impact: The current Government proposals risk major manufacturers reassessing their position in the UK market, particularly if the Government does not align phase out dates with international manufacturing and regulation developments. Imposing separate regulations could diminish the attractiveness of the UK market due to its smaller size, leading to prioritisation of larger markets at a time when the Government is seeking to secure UK investment.
  6. Need for developed technology: While supporting the transition to zero emissions, manufacturers emphasised the importance of fully developed technology. Before committing to investments in new technology, the industry requires guarantees from the Government regarding the availability of necessary infrastructure and the implementation of policies that drive demand and improve access to the sector.

MCIA’s CEO, Tony Campbell, said:

“We were grateful for the recognition our sector received for its important role in shaping the future of transportation. The Minister showed genuine interest in our concerns and actively participated in the discussion. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with officials to ensure the right decisions are made on phase out and that the Government fully harnesses the potential of our vehicles for the benefit of everyone.”

The MCIA and its members are committed to a zero emission future but this must be premised on a proportional and technology-neutral approach. We urge the Government to consider the unique challenges faced by the industry and allow time for technology development, enabling informed decision-making based on factual evidence, not what the Government hopes might be the case.

Honda surfs into Wheels and Waves 2023 with 7 custom minibikes

In 2022 it was custom CMX500 Rebels, with Maanboard from Sardinia-based customisers Motocicli Audaci taking the honours, while 2021 saw Mototrafa’s CB650R Fenix win for Portugal.

For 2023, it’s the turn of the minibikes. Honda have invited seven young artists to collaborate with established bike builders to both inspire a younger generation of riders and spark interest in the joys of two wheelers among new audiences.

If any manufacturer has bikes to do that, it’s Honda – with the 125cc Dax, Monkey and MSX125 Grom. Each are icons in their own right, meaning different things to different riders. The retro Dax and funky Monkey both inspire thoughts of the 1970s; the Grom is a rolling, contemporary style statement even before it gets any special treatment.

What all three share is a total ‘grin’ factor. It’s hard not to smile when you see one, never mind ride one. Add to that their unintimidating, miniature dimensions and amazing fuel economy, and you have the perfect starter bike – fun, stylish and frugal.

Hooking up some very creative minds with some equally talented bike creators and letting their imaginations run wild on this trio has produced some very interesting results – the basis for Honda’s presence at Wheels and Waves 2023.

This is another of many projects highlighting Honda’s commitment to encourage new riders to the market. One key activation in the UK is the Ride Free activation which allows participants to try a Honda motorcycle under the guidance of a Honda Approved Motorcycle Training Instructor. Attendees are taken through the first stages of motorcycling in a safe off-road area with an instructor alongside all the way. Clothing and safety equipment is all provided.

The Ride Free Experience events are taking place across the country throughout the year and will be held either at our Honda Approved Training Dealerships or at their partner training schools. For more information and to book a Ride Free session, please click on the link below:

THE PEOPLE AND THE BIKES

Bike 1 (UK)

Hold On!

Aptly named, as the Grom by Matt B and renowned builder Guy Willison (@guywillison) is not only stretched and slammed like a Pro-Street drag bike, it’s also sporting a turbocharger. With nitrous oxide injection for good measure. Why not?

The Artist: Matt B Customs (UK) @mattbcustoms

Matt, MattB Customs, first discovered his passion for trainer customisation at 17 when he started designing trainers for friends and family. His artwork has now appeared on trainers worn by Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Marcus Rashford.

“It’s been such an unreal experience to explore and apply our art style to something crazy that isn’t shoes or accessories. We wanted to make it look as though the bike was THAT fast, the paint couldn’t even stay on, creating an illusion of the paint dripping off the bike. It’s turned out exactly how we wanted it!”

Guy Willison’s recent history of working with Honda UK on limited-run special edition CB1100RSs and CB1000Rs made him the perfect man to design and build this special, one-off Grom. Instagram: @guywillison, Facebook: Guy Willison, YouTube: Guy Willison

“When asked by Honda UK to work with Matt on this project, I felt there was only direction we should go – a ‘no holds barred’ turbo-charged, nitrous oxide injected drag racer pared to the bone with styling and paint job to match.

Team responsible for HOLD ON!:
Guy Willison: (Skid!) Overall design and build, including fairing and general fabrication
Matt B: Paintwork design and seat paint
Jordan Bowen: Turbo/ Nitrous injection, exhaust, swinging arm and general fabrication
Pro Kustom (Arnie): Paintwork
Core Motorcycle: Leather seat

Bike 2 (Spain)

Driving Me Mad

How do you make the adorable even more cute? Simple. Take one Dax and – where you can – add bold splashes of primary colour. Influenced by her young self, Coco and builder UFO Garage (@ufo.garage) have created a two-wheeled visual pop of joy, with chunky block tyres thrown in for good measure.

The Artist: Coco Dávez (Spain)   @cocodavez

Valeria Palmeiro, or Coco Dávez, is a talented artist based in Madrid who has developed her career in painting, photography and art direction. This colourful universe has led her to collaborate with brands such as Chanel, Netflix, Prada and Dior.

“Being part of this project has made me very excited. When I knew the bike I would design, the DAX 125, one of my favourite childhood games immediately came to mind, so I was inspired by the colour palette to give life to each of the parts and pieces of the DAX 125.”

Bike 3 (Austria)

Monkey X Business

Austrian artist Boicut and collaborator Titan Motorcycles (@titanmotorcycles) have certainly pushed the boundaries with their creation. It’s an eyeball-popping take on a ‘70s chopper with radically raked front end, mini-ape ‘bars, chromed grabrail and upswept exhaust with fishtail-style end cap.

The Artist: BOICUT (Austria)  @boicut

Boicut’s work is for the most part illustrative, combining impulsive lines and shapes. His work has always been inspired by popular culture, skateboarding, the beauty of everyday objects and urban environments.

“I immediately think of what I have in common with monkeys – the love of bananas. This you can find in various stages of abstraction on the bike. In general I wanted to create a bright and colourful bike which would be an eye catcher and fun to look at. I designed the basic colourway and theme digitally but loved being able to paint on the actual bike myself. This way I could respond even better to the unique chopper shape the custom workshop has built.”

Bike 4 (Portugal)

Furiosa

An awful lot of work between Tamara Alves and her builder, Art On Wheels Garage (@artonwheelsgarage) has turned a stock Dax into a toasted post-apocalyptic roadrunner. Details abound: Block tyres, a wolf motif, graffiti signatures, bespoke exhaust with wire mesh cage, and glimpses of tartan peeping out of the scorched seat cover.

The Artist: Tamara Alves (Portugal) @tamara_aalves

Tamara Alves specialises in work which inserts itself into the world such as street aesthetics and urban context pieces. Her work is based upon the primeval vitality of strong sensations with the idea that our instincts define us.

“I was inspired by the world of Mad Max and Tank Girl. Every modification was carefully chosen, and my standout feature is the wolf motif. Its presence symbolises strength, independence, and a ferocious determination to conquer the open road…”

Bike 5 (France)

Tokyo

An absolute riot of colour assembled between French artist Grems and builder George Woodman (@georgewoodman64). Pop-art visuals are pumped with vibrant colour in abstract – and subtly meshed – patterns on every square centimetre of Monkey available.

The Artist: GREMS (France) @insta_grems

Michaël Eveno, better known as Grems, is an artist who draws upon his music as well as his art. Michaël sports 6 solo albums, 8 releases in collaboration with artists such as Klub sandwich, and multiple art collaborations with brands including Nike, Swatch and Converse.

Bike 6 (Italy)

Let’s Grom

Franceso Marchesani’s Grom has been produced together with Alex Polita (@alexpolita53) an ex-IDM championship Fireblade-riding front runner. Let’s Grom spreads its graffiti wings artfully on the fuel tank, drawing an observer into the world of possibilities that two wheels present. As for the bike itself – and as an ex-racer would want – it’s even more compact than it started out. Tiny LED indicators, lever-protecting knuckle guards, no mirrors. If you don’t need it, lose it!

The Artist: Franceso Marchesani (Italy) @francesco_onem

Francesco Marchesani is an Italian graffiti artist whose street art features in multiple cities, namely: Bologna, Palermo, Milano, Eindhoven and Los Angeles. He takes creative inspiration from animated characters, twisting them into his own street-adorned style.

“In my work, I love to use irony and craziness as a means to reach the observer. I often add a title to my work, to reinforce a concept or give a double reading to the drawing. I like to use bright and cheerful colours, which refer to the world of cartoons and comics.”

Bike 7 (Germany)

Manjushage

A subtle café racer drawn from a Monkey base by @lanaarts23, and built by Maximilian Zech – a Honda technician based at the flagship Honda Centre dealer in Frankfurt – with a real flair for creativity (@hondamotorrad_de). The Yoshimura end-can and aftermarket remote reservoir rear shocks boost performance and handling, while Lena has crafted the fuel tank and fender white with spider lily motifs (Manjushage in Japanese). Note the tiny monkey on the downpipe heat shield…

The Artist: @lanaarts23

Lana is a German artist recognized for her hyper-realistic artwork. She is widely known on social media as Lanaarts23, where she shares her passion for art and drawing. Lana utilizes coloured and graphite pencils to create her art.

I have chosen to draw spider lilies because I really like their monochromatic look. As spider lilies are commonly found in Japan, they also have a connection to Honda’s roots. Furthermore, the red colour of the lilies complements Honda’s red beautifully. I have also included a few insects in my drawings because they are simply enjoyable to depict!”

Classic Suzukis at Ardingly Summer Bike Show

A pair of ex-Barry Sheene race bikes are among many exhibits at the Ardingly Summer Show on Sunday 30th July.

Both machines are from the 1973 season, when Barry Sheene won the newly introduced Formula 750 European Championship. The tubular-framed Seeley Suzuki TR500 was one of his most successful motorcycles, also carrying him to the Shell Sport Championship, King of Brands and MCN Man of the Year.

The other race bike is a Seeley TR500 1973 Monococque – the only original of this type ridden by Sheene.

Also confirmed for the show is a Suzuki TR750 XR11, raced in the 1975 Transatlantic Trophy by Stan Woods, who was the only British rider to achieve first place that year, (at the Oulton Park leg).

There is no age restriction on machines entered for display at the July Ardingly Show, but post-1994 motorcycles are expected to be of interest. Motorcycles can be submitted free of charge using an online form on the Elk Promotions website and owners of display bikes also get into the event for free.

The main bike show is held in the large Jubilee Hall, alongside club stands and selected traders. Bike jumblers and traders, tons of classic motorcycles, new and used spares, clothing and accessories are spread across five halls around the showground. Refreshments are available from a variety of carefully chosen food stalls.

The South of England Showground can be found at Ardingly, near Gatwick, RH17 6TL – eight miles from M23 junction 10, and clearly sign-posted.

Disney and Vespa

Two iconic brands meet in a limited edition collaboration that celebrates a very special anniversary: Vespa presents Disney Mickey Mouse Edition by Vespa.

The two brands have always been in the zeitgeist thanks to an iconography made up of unmistakable shapes and colours, with Vespa valuing freedom and fun, shared with Disney’s values of storytelling and escapism this makes for the perfect collaboration. The über-famous scooter recently became the very materialization of dreams in the fantastic adventures of Luca, Disney and Pixar’s animation masterpiece.

Today these two timeless icons come together on a special project for Disney100, with Vespa paying homage to this anniversary through a global collaboration of the two unique brands with a Disney Mickey Mouse Edition by Vespa.

Vespa is more than just way of transportation, it is a way of life: the extension of a rider’s personality, of their history and journey. A wonderful travel companion that, in this special edition, sets the imagination free and encourages us to dream big.

Michele Colaninno, Chief Executive of global strategy, product, marketing, and innovation of the Piaggio Group, commented on this collaboration as follows: “Dreams allow us to look to the future with optimism, even in complex times such as these. A timeless icon like Vespa could not fail to celebrate, on this very special occasion of Disney’s 100th Anniversary, an equally everlasting icon like Mickey Mouse, with a tribute to creativity, imagination, light-heartedness, and fun – the very values that have always anchored Vespa. Today, as then. This collaboration between Vespa and Disney represents the celebration of two historic companies that have a common dream: to allow everyone to express their imagination freely.”

Claire Terry, Senior Vice President, Disney Consumer Products, Games & Publishing EMEA said, “Just like Mickey Mouse, Vespa is a cultural icon, evoking a sense of fun and adventure and together they form a wonderful combination, truly extending our timeless storytelling. We are incredibly excited to bring this version of the iconic scooter to our fans in our centenary year and bringing all of Mickey’s charm and personality to road trips wherever people want to go!”

For this collaboration, the Vespa Primavera 50cc, 125cc and 150cc are coloured black, red, white and yellow: the same hues that have characterised Walt Disney’s most famous mouse for decades. The yellow wheels are reminiscent of Mickey Mouse’s shoes, while the black mirrors recall his unmistakable round ears. A graphic pattern outlining the character’ silhouette decorates both sides of the scooter as well as the front. Finally Mickey Mouse’s signature could not be missed, featured on both the saddle and the front shell.

Disney Mickey Mouse Edition by Vespa comes with a matching helmet in the same stunning colours.

‘Hey Cardo, ask my partner to marry me…’

Cardo’s most recent customer survey revealed that over 250 Cardo users had proposed over their Cardo – just 20 years ago, this wouldn’t have been possible, as motorcycle communication devices didn’t exist except for hand gestures and shouting at each other at traffic lights.

Cardo launched the world’s first motorcycle Bluetooth-based wireless intercom headset and since then has been responsible for most of the industry’s innovations including the first mesh-powered intercom, the first premium sound system by JBL, and the first voice-powered communications system.

With over 18,000* respondents from 114 different countries, a close look at the data showed there were a lot of similarities between the global #CardoFam…

Nearly 60% of respondents rode wearing a full-face helmet with flip-up and modular options being the second most popular types of helmets.

Just over 44% of riders had adventure and touring models and the majority rode with 3-15 riders. Leisure was the purpose of riding for those surveyed, passion and freedom were cited as the top choices as to the reason behind their miles -and for over half of those surveyed, riding helps to improve their mental state.

When taking a riding holiday, 45% of riders choose to do more than 476 miles/766 km – no wonder that other than their Cardo, snacks, and drinks were the thing they didn’t leave the house without!

Over half of the respondents had used a communicator for three years or more and over 70% had chosen Cardo as their first-ever device.

Be sure to listen out for Cardo users singing along while riding – nearly half of those surveyed use their device to listen to music with 17% humming along, 44% singing occasionally, and 17% admitting they ‘perform’.

With answers from around the globe and riders all experiencing differing weather conditions, it was no surprise that the three most loved features of Cardo devices are: Sound by JBL, Waterproof, and Dynamic Mesh Connectivity.

When it comes to talking, ‘Family’ and ‘Spouse’ attributed to over half of the calls made by users with ‘Friends’ making up just under 30%.

Another thing that the #CardoFam was in agreement about was that nine-time Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champion Valentino Rossi was their favourite celebrity biking role model, followed by six-time MotoGP World Champion Marc Marquez and ‘King of Cool’ Steve McQueen in second and third place respectively.

Head to the Cardo Systems social media channels to learn more about the #CardoFam or www.cardosystems.com to find the Cardo device that suits you.

Yamaha’s new PW-XM flagship eMTB drive unit

Yamaha’s new PW-XM flagship eMTB drive unit: Marking thirty years as the pioneer of the e-Bike system.

In recent years the global demand for eBikes has expanded dramatically as bike manufacturers have fully embraced the latest drive unit technology and introduced stylish new models offering increased range and performance. The eBike segment now accounts for a significant proportion of the total bicycle market, and this quiet and economical form of transport is the fastest-growing sector in zero emission personal mobility.

Yamaha Motor pioneered the first e-Bike back in 1993. It mounted the first iteration of the company’s signature Power Assist System (PAS), in which an electric motor is used to provide an assistive force to the pedalling power of the rider in a manner that feels natural and in tune with human perceptions. Simply named the “PAS” after its headline feature, the bicycle was hailed as the first of its kind in the world and enjoyed a successful market debut.

Key factors behind the worldwide success of Yamaha’s range of compact, high torque drive units include class-leading electronic control technology that provides instant power with a seamless and natural feeling – as well as high quality, outstanding reliability, and a first-class global backup.

New PW-XM: Yamaha’s new ultra-light flagship eMTB motor

The new PW-XM is the lightest drive unit in the range, and its launch 30 years after Yamaha invented the eBike underlines just how far this zero-emission technology has progressed.

Aimed at the high-end eMTB market, the PW-XM features a specifically-designed magnesium housing that keeps its overall weight down to just 2.6 kg. Yamaha has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of specialist magnesium components for its 1,000 cc R1M Supersport motorcycle, and this knowledge has been used in the construction of the ultra-light PW-XM.

With the reduced weight and the improved heat dissipation, this flagship motor is able to produce consistently strong torque even when under high loads for long periods.

As well as standing for ‘Magnesium’, the ‘M’ in PW-XM is also a reference to the motor’s assembly place in Morimachi, Japan – a bike-centric city famous for its mountain biking and cycling tourism, making it the perfect place for the birth of this new flagship eMTB drive unit.

Highest torque-to-weight ratio

With a maximum torque figure of 85 Nm and weight of just 2.6 kg, the PW-XM has the highest torque-to-weight ratio in the Yamaha range, making it an ideal drive unit for eMTB applications. It is also fully compatible with Yamaha’s existing PW-X3 and PWseries S2 drive units, enabling manufacturers to create three different eBikes using the same chassis design.

Yamaha Pure Ride: Ideal mountain biking power delivery

With its minimal external dimensions combined with Yamaha’s highest torque-to-weight ratio, the PW-XM is designed specifically for the premium eMTB market. Its compact layout offers greater freedom to bike manufacturers in their next generation chassis designs – and the powerful torque ensures strong performance on Alpine tracks, steep hills or sandy trails.

Pure Ride is how Yamaha describes the unique power delivery of the new PW-XM. Using state-of-the-art sensing electronics including Automatic Assist Mode, tuning detection algorithms and Zero Cadence Technology, the PW-XM rider will experience strong, seamless and natural feeling power at all times.

Displays and batteries

The new PW-XM can be paired with any of the company’s displays and batteries, best in conjunction with the minimalistic and highly technical Interface X.

PW-XM Product Highlights

  • All new premium eMTB drive unit, designed for extreme off-road challenges as well as sporty trail rides.
  • Best in class riding experience: 85 Nm and 2.6 kg – Yamaha’s most powerful and lightest design, with the highest torque-to-weight ratio.
  • Magnesium housing, manufactured in house using Yamaha Motor’s motorcycle technology, ensures highest quality look and feel.
  • Improved heat management.
  • Equipped with Yamaha’s advanced sensing technologies – Zero Cadence Technology and Automatic Support Mode – for a powerful, responsive and seamless Yamaha Pure Ride experience.
  • Walk-assist feature.
  • Compatible with PW-X3 and PWseries S2 motor brackets – one frame design can accommodate three different Yamaha motors.
  • Compatible with all Yamaha displays and batteries.
