From retro muscle power to Retro Pure Power

From retro muscle power to Retro Pure Power – that’s the story of AC in 2021- and the new tech is ready to take the two-wheel market by storm too!

The transformation of the iconic AC Cobra racing car with its huge, gas-guzzling ‘classic’ V8 petrol engine to one now powered by an advanced, equally powerful but totally clean electric motor caused shock waves around the heritage auto sector when the news was announced earlier this year.

Now there’s more shock news. Electric power will appear under the saddle of AC’s first ever two-wheeler! The ‘Autokraft by AC’ name badge (recreating a form of branding which was a key part of AC’s history dating back to the 1970’s) will be once again a regular sight on the roads of Britain. The new products, scooters, are being manufactured in the UK.

The scooter is likely to become a new and sort-after fashion icon too. In Britain’s financially constrained, post-COVID economic environment – never mind an urban street network blighted by traffic-coagulating measures designed to force drivers on to public transport – speed, manoeuvrability and, of course, environmental credentials will all be high on the shopping list considerations for new ‘wheels’.

This will mean that Britain will be seeing a surge of interest in electric scooters which are currently illegal for road use but where a planned change in road traffic legislation already announced by the Government will give the green light to sales in the sector.

Priced at a competitive £1,692 including VAT, the new Autokraft scooters are certain to make a strong impact in a market dominated by imports from China.

Alan Lubinsky, the man behind AC’s continued survival over 25 years and the architect of its recent rebirth with exciting new impetus and product ranges, explains why he is confident of success:

“Scooter buyers and riders in the UK need to understand where their product is coming from, the proven automotive standards used in its design and manufacture and the heritage behind our famous brand. Our TR560 scooter has a 24 volt lithium ion battery pack with a built-in charger and its key performance figures are more than a match for other machines in the market. Top speed is 25km/h, estimated range between charges (which take just 4.5 hours from empty) is 50km – and those figures can be further enhanced by selecting an optional higher output battery for just £50.

Its no accident that Autokraft Advanced Technology Ltd is based on land in Hethel, Norfolk once owned by  Lotus and which is forever associated with that company’s glory days in motorsport. (See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_Cars).

Alan Lubinsky explains that the car on which rest many of AC’s hopes for sales success in 2021 and beyond, together with those of its loyal and enthusiastic fan base, are focused is the AC Cobra Series 4 electric, a close relation to the well regarded AC Cobra Superblower model which was launched in 1999.

Further details, including how to purchase a scooter online, are available at https://www.autokraft.technology

Dry your bikes mate

Research by motorcycle dryer manufacturer Bruhl reveals that most riders are still drying their bikes the hard, and inefficient, way.

In a survey of 250 riders, the majority (58%) report using a microfibre cloth or chamois leather to dry their motorcycle after washing it.

While hand-drying gives an improved finish and helps prevent condensation if the machine is garaged or parked under a cover, this method will not remove moisture from hard to reach areas, such as the engine, suspension linkage, brake rotors, speedo/dash area and control switches. In time, this can cause corrosion and/or affect performance.

Hand-drying also involves time and effort and the cloths need to be washed and dried afterwards.

On a more positive note, only 15% leave their motorcycle to dry in the air, which often leads to ‘water spotting’ and smears on bodywork, as well as allowing water to drain into crevices on the bike, where it becomes trapped.

Although bike dryers have been available for several years, less than one in ten riders surveyed use one.

Bruhl dryers use a powerful 1600W turbine to blast away water in seconds, leaving the entire vehicle dry, with minimum fuss.

They have several features specifically developed for automotive applications, including a filtered air intake, to provide a debris-free blast of clean air. The bright red power lead is highly visible, reducing trip hazards, and protected by an RCD ‘trip switch’ to prevent the risk of electrocution – very important when using electrical appliances in wet conditions.

Prices start at £119- including VAT for the Bruhl MD1400, which is covered by a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty. Visit bruhl.co.uk to see all the options.

BMW R1800GS Concept

BMW accessory specialists Nippy Normans have imagined how a GS might look powered by the new 1800cc boxer twin motor, tuned to put out 140hp.

The R1800GS concept is the brainchild of Norman Birtles, who founded Nippy Normans in 2003, to offer BMW riders the widest variety of accessories from  around the world;

“When I saw the R18 at last year’s Milan show I wondered how that massive motor would look in a GS frame. During lockdown, my curiosity got the better of me, and I asked Kar Lee, the designer who’s created so many memorable concept bikes, if he could come up with something.”

Kar produced two versions of the R1800GS concept – a ‘touring’ road bike and an adventure spec model.

Both are powered by the 1800cc flat twin, returned to deliver 140hp and 115ft-lb torque.

The touring bike comes with alloy wheels to enhance handling, LED lights and an Akrapovic silencer. It is also fitted with a host of practical accessories from the Nippy Normans catalogue, including wind deflectors, heated seat, bash plate and luggage rack with pannier rails.

The Adventure-specification model gets robust spoked wheels, full crash protection and rugged alloy panniers, so it can cope with challenging terrain.

“I realise this is pure fantasy” admits Norman. “Shoe-horning that 110kg 1800cc motor into a GS frame would require some serious re-engineering of the chassis, but the combination of glorious low-down torque and the long-distance comfort and handling of a GS is something to dream about!”

Brembo Confirms Motorsport Leadership With Wins In 2020

The competition record of the company is enriched with over 42 titles won in 2020, with the result of 500 world championships won in the main Motorsport categories

Brembo, leader in high performance braking systems, confirms its technological supremacy in Motorsport through the many championships won with teams and manufacturers in 2020. With 42 world titles won, including drivers, manufacturers and team titles the Brembo group, Motorsport supplier for over 45 years, reaches the milestone of *500 world titles obtained in various two and four-wheel competitions.

In Formula 1 all of the 17 Grand Prix races in the current season have been won by cars equipped with Brembo components. The Bergamo-based company can boast victories in 442 out of 785 Grand Prix that have taken place since 1975, the year of the debut in Formula 1, until today, for a total of 26 world drivers’ championships and 30 world constructors’ championship won with the top teams.

Brembo’s dominance also continues in MotoGP, to which are added new wins in Moto2 and Moto3 (also with Marchesini). Over 500 victories in the premier class (500 class and MotoGP): for the fifth consecutive season Brembo supplied all the teams. Specifically, the 27 riders who raced at least one race in MotoGP this year relied on the high levels of performance and safety guaranteed by Brembo components: brake calipers, carbon discs and pads, brake pumps and clutch pumps.
Starting from 1978 to 2001, it’s possible to count the first 185 GPs won by bikes with Brembo brakes in the 500 class. However, the winning series started in 1995. Since that year all the races have been won by bikes with its brakes. Finally, since the MotoGP class was introduced in 2002, all 329 races have been won by bikes equipped with Brembo brakes. This makes the total of 500 victories in over 40 years of competing in the top level of motorcycle racing.
In the MotoGP class, Brembo can boast success in 32 world riders’ championships and 33 world constructors’ championships won with the top teams.

Brembo also dominated the World Superbike Championship. The Italian company has been present since 1988 and boasts 29 world riders’ championships and 33 world constructors’ championships, obtained in over 30 years of participation with the top teams.

Twenty-twenty was also a winning year in Electric Motorsport. Second consecutive season for Brembo as the exclusive supplier of the FIA Formula E championship. All 24 electric single-seaters of the new Gen2 car were equipped with the brakes of the Bergamo-based company through the constructor Spark Racing Technology. After the 2019 debut in the FIM MotoE World Cup championship, Brembo has again equipped the 18 Ego Corsa of Energica Motor Company with the entire braking system, as well as with the Marchesini forged wheels, presented on 7 of 11 MotoGP teams and of over 50 percent Moto2, Moto3 and WSBK riders.

In addition to the already mentioned Formula 1, Formula E, MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, MotoE and WSBK championships, it’s important to mention also GT, NASCAR, WRC, WTCR, IndyCar, Enduro, MX2, EWC, IMSA, DTM, Formula 2, Formula 3 and many others for a total number of over 500 world titles won from the 70s to the present in the various categories.

During this season, as always, Brembo has been closely collaborating with the main global car and bikes manufacturers, investing maximum effort in research and development of innovative processes and products that are increasingly high-performance and technologically advanced, guaranteeing maximum reliability and safety.

* It should be noted that the group also includes the successes achieved with Marchesini, the leading brand in the design, production and commercialization of light alloy wheels for racing and street motorcycles and with AP Racing, a leading brand in the race car and motorcycle brake and clutch market based in Coventry. Both brands are part of the Brembo group since 2000.

Motorcycles learn to ‘talk car’

A consortium, including vehicle manufacturers and the FIM, today launches a standard for motorcycles to be able to communicate with other vehicles as well as pieces of infrastructure and each other. The standard is expected to have long-term benefits for motorcycle safety.

The Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC) is a collaboration between manufacturers, suppliers, researchers and associations to make Powered Two Wheelers (motorcycles and scooters) part of the future connected mobility.

CMC is a non-profit organisation established by key motorcycle makers with the unilateral goal to promote and develop Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) on a global scale.

This consortium, created in 2016, is known as the Connected Motorcycle Consortium (CMC). The aim of the consortium is to improve motorcycle rider safety and comfort, a goal generally shared by the FIM, hence our involvement and support. Other members of the consortium include motorcycle manufacturers, suppliers and researchers.

The standard, known as the Basic Specification of Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) for motorcycles and other Powered Two-Wheelers (PTW), is comprised of a set of documents which address various topics including triggering conditions, localisation accuracy, algorithms and communicated data and rider interface and antenna performance. The CMC has been working on around 30 different applications for this technology ranging from alerting riders to the nearest refuelling/recharging opportunity to blind-spot warning technology.

By allowing different types of vehicles to communicate with each other for the first time, it is expected that many accidents could simply be avoided. One such accident is the common “looked but failed to see” scenario where a car driver inadvertently pulls out in front of a motorcycle. The C-ITS standard means that the motorcycle could now alert the car to the presence of the motorcycle allowing the car to activate its autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system.

Mr Jorge Viegas, President of the FIM said “Technology is hard to integrate into motorcycles, but it is clear that some technology can help motorcycles share the road safely. We teach riders about the importance of eye-contact with other road users, but allowing motorcycles to ‘talk car’ adds another layer of communication that will inevitably save thousands of lives for decades to come.”

Claire Depré, Head of Unit Sustainable & Intelligent Transport, DG Mobility and Transport, EC has congratulated CMC “for the work carried out, for bringing much more innovation and contributing to the safety of the overall transport system.”

Auritech helps you protect the gift of hearing this Christmas

PPE, or personal protective equipment to give it its proper title, has been one of the buzzwords of 2020. Keeping ourselves and others safe has become our national duty during the Covid-19 pandemic and as we look towards happier times in 2021, specialist ear protection company Auritech is asking that we don’t forget to look after our hearing in the new year, when hopefully our favourite activities will start to return to normality.

Auritech recently conducted a survey among the British public, which has revealed that almost half of those interviewed have changed their opinion on personal protective equipment (PPE) since the start of the pandemic. The survey found that 48% of all respondents now had a more positive attitude towards wearing PPE and now Auritech is urging the public to ensure that they also consider protecting their hearing too.

Auritech’s range of earplugs are all equipped with a precision tuned filter to protect wearers from the damaging noise generated by activities while enabling them to hear essential surrounding sound such as conversation, in many cases enhancing the experience of the activity. Manufactured in the EU and CE certified, the range contains seven specifically tuned universal fit earplugs designed for particular activities, and all make a practical stocking filler for your loved ones this Christmas.

Auritech Intelligent Hearing Protection range

Biker: tunes out harmful high frequency wind noise, while still allowing the motorcyclist to hear traffic noise, engine tone and conversations through intercom systems.

Sleep: Promotes healthy sleep by softening background noise, including snoring, while allowing important sounds, like fire alarms, crying children and door bells to be heard clearly.

Travel: pressure regulating filter reduces risk of ear pain caused by pressure changes, removing disturbing background noise while allowing normal conversation to be held on aeroplanes and underground trains.

Shoot: Reduces gun blast noise while allowing wearers to hear conversations and nature sounds, enhancing shoot safety and experience.

Work: Reduces machine and tool noise while allowing the wearer to maintain communication and concentration, which can be a problem when wearing foam earplugs for sustained periods.

Music: For musicians and gig goers, the filter in Auritech Music plugs enhances the sound of the music while reducing overall volume, which would usually be above safe decibel limits.

Water Sport: Regular water contact inside the ear can cause bacterial build-up, irritation and damage. Protecting the middle ear and ear drum from water contact with hearing protectors is recommended.

All Auritech universal fit ear plugs are fully reusable, being constructed from easy to clean medical grade, silicone free hypoallergenic thermoplastic. They come in a stylish aluminium storage tube, which doubles as a keyring, all for £19.95 a pair.

Auritech products can be purchased on line at www.auritech.co.uk

November Powered Two Wheeler sales ride high despite lockdown

Despite Powered Two Wheelers (PTWs) increasingly becoming the transport of choice for those wanting to avoid public transport without clogging our streets with single-occupancy cars, or whose journeys cannot realistically be made by bicycle, or those who just want to improve their mental health, the Government continues to define PTW shops as “non-essential”.

Therefore, during a month when conventional trading was outlawed, the November PTW registration results, published today by MCIA, make excellent reading. Despite the challenges, overall PTW registrations were just 22 units down on November 2019, with registrations of motorcycles slightly up on last year.

Despite, or maybe because of, the uncertainties of 2020, PTW sales have flourished, with total registrations for the period January to November, when activity was severely restricted during two lockdowns, just 5.6% down on 2019.  During the same period, sales of scooters have increased by 6.1%, as more people get on board the perfect solution to today’s commuting challenges.

The relentless growth of electrically-powered PTWs seen in earlier months shows no sign of abating, with registrations up 15.3% on the month and up a thumping 45.7% against the year to date 2019.  Riders love the fact that most electric PTWs can be charged from a conventional three-pin plug and many feature removable batteries, meaning the vehicle doesn’t have to be near the charger and expensive charging infrastructure is not required.

If the idea of the many benefits of riding a PTW appeals to you, please visit www.unlockyourfreedom.co.uk, to find out more about getting onto powered two wheels, including how to access the straightforward Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) course, which is all that is required to ride a PTW of up to 11Kw or 125cc.

Bring your bike under cover

Motorbike tarpaulin covers ensure that motorbikes do not remain unprotected when they are not being used for a while. The iXS Outdoor Tarpaulin Cover provides efficient protection against the weather – suitable for the spring, summer, autumn and winter, while the iXS Indoor Tarpaulin Cover mainly keeps the dust and dirt away. The motorbike covers help to preserve your motorbike in the best possible way and make a major contribution to retaining its value and reducing maintenance costs.

Outdoor Tarpaulin Cover

An unprotected motorbike can be subjected to various weather and environmental conditions. Rays of sunshine make bright colours fade, the paintwork becomes matt, rubber and plastic become brittle. Rain, snow and ice will allow rust to develop and splashes from water, leaves, sand and dust can make the bike dirty. The Outdoor Tarpaulin Cover was created to keep these unpleasant influences reliably away from your motorbike. No water can penetrate the weather-resistant material and UV and the sun are effectively kept away from the bike. The Outdoor Tarpaulin Cover is made of extremely robust, tear-resistant and long-lasting 300D polyester.

The iXS protective cover is available in four different sizes to ensure the best possible fit. In addition, the shape is tailored to the contours of a motorbike. A good fit is very important so that the protective cover does not flutter around in the wind. Otherwise it might scratch your motorbike. If the tarpaulin is a good fit, it also simplifies handling when you put the cover on and take it off. The elastic seam helps with the optimal sit of the tarpaulin and minimises its exposure to wind. The silvery inserts and prints increase visibility, without making it appear obtrusive. A window is integrated in the tarpaulin so you can see the number plate. In some countries, including Germany, such a window is even compulsory. Thanks to the light material, the tarpaulin can be folded into a handy pack size and stored in the bag provided.

Indoor Tarpaulin Cover

The Indoor Tarpaulin Cover is designed to be used under an outdoor cover or in a dry place such as in a garage. It prevents the bike becoming dusty and protects it against other environmental influences. It also prevents scratches, which might for example be caused by the friction of an outdoor tarpaulin fluttering in the wind against the motorbike. The Indoor Tarpaulin Cover is made from a high-quality 4-way stretchy material and adjusted to the shape of the motorbike’s silhouette. Four sizes are available to ensure that the fit really is perfect. The material is so light that the cover can be folded up compactly and stored in the bag provided.

A three-year agreement sees a new era begin for one of Dorna Sports’ most successful talent promotion projects

The Hawkers European Talent Cup will begin a new era in 2021 as the Cup gets ready to race on Bridgestone tyres. A new agreement sees the world-renowned tyre manufacturer come on board for three seasons, becoming a vital part of one of Dorna Sports’ most successful talent promotion projects.

The HETC began in 2017, a vital new facet of the FIM CEV Repsol on the Road to MotoGP™. The Cup has already created Grand Prix podium finishers and seen riders move up the ladder to the Moto3™ World Championship thanks to its cost-effective, close racing. Creating the perfect environment for young riders to hone their craft, the HETC has become one of the most established steps towards young talent being able to begin their careers as professional motorcycle racers.

Now the HETC will begin a new era with Bridgestone, with the tyre manufacturer bringing on board their Grand Prix experience – including as the single MotoGP™ tyre supplier from 2009 to 2015 – and an amazing history of worldwide success across an array of different motorsport disciplines. The HETC can look forward to at least three more seasons of action-packed, scintillating racing in one of the world’s most experienced and expertise-driven pair of hands.

Nico Thuy, Head of Motorcycle at Bridgestone EMIA: “We are proud to partner up with Dorna Sports for the Hawkers European Talent Cup and to become part of the network to train future Champions.  Motorsport is part of our heritage and we are looking forward to the new season to bring Bridgestone’s cutting-edge tyres and new talent together to make a great match.”

Pau Serracanta, Managing Director of Dorna Sports: “The HETC has been such an incredible success since inception and we’re delighted to welcome Bridgestone on board for the next three years. This will be the beginning of a new era for the Cup, creating more Champions of the future, and Bridgestone will be a vital partner in continuing the HETC’s incredible success in finding and honing the Grand Prix talent of tomorrow.”

Don’t let Jack Frost strike! Read IAM RoadSmart’s tips as you get back on the road this winter

We usually dress for the weather and when the temperatures drop this means wrapping up with a hat, gloves, scarf, a big coat and appropriate shoes.

So, it makes sense, when you’re heading back out with the lifting of travel restrictions this winter, to adapt your driving or motorcycling behaviour to suit the weather and road conditions around you.

With white frosty mornings also comes icy roads, and that’s why Richard Gladman, IAM RoadSmart’s head of driving and riding standards has put together some advice on how to deal with driving and riding in icy conditions:

  • In very bad weather, where police advice is not to travel it is better to stay at home rather than risk an incident. Always check the weather and road conditions on your route before setting off, if you are using public transport links, remember they too, may also be delayed.
  • Make sure you know how the demister settings on your car work and how to adjust them properly. If you are riding a motorcycle, a clean scratch-free visor with a correctly fitted insert will help you stay mist-free.
  • If you are braving a motorcycle remember to wrap up warm, the cold will affect your concentration. Heated kit is a good investment especially for your extremities.
  • Ensure your lights and wipers are working well, you need to see and be seen. If your wipers are making a terrible squeaking noise, it’s time to get them checked, they may need replacement blades or the arms straightening.
  • Never pour boiling water on the screen as the sudden temperature change may cause cracks. Prevention is better than a cure so if possible, cover the glass overnight with an old sheet to prevent freezing, or invest in a windscreen cover.  Never use newspaper or cardboard on a wet screen as it can get stuck and leave a real mess.
  • If you haven’t done so already, get an anti-freeze check at your local garage or fast-fit centre. Keep your washer bottle topped up with an even stronger concentration of screen wash.
  • It might sound obvious, but you may need up to 10 times the distance to stop in icy conditions – increase your following distance to account for this. If the car in front must stop suddenly or worse still, a crash occurs, you will need that extra time to react and stop safely.

Richard said: “As ever, preparation and planning are the key to worry-free driving and riding when the mercury plummets.

“Plan your route carefully as major routes are likely to be treated with salt and less likely to be icy – but ice might still form in dips, on bridges and in shaded areas.

“Leave more time for your journey, respect the conditions and don’t rush. Factor in delays and – if you’re driving – give yourself plenty of time to clear the ice properly from all your windows.”

Kawasaki’s Supercharged Z H2 SE blasts into 2021

A supercharged sensation at its launch on the Las Vegas Motor Speedway earlier in 2020, Kawasaki’s incredible Z H2 blasts into 2021 with an SE model in showrooms making it a two-bike range for the new year.

In its own unique paint and graphic look, the SE model does what seemed impossible at the time, adding yet more bling to the Z H2 concept. Already a no-nonsense, impossible to ignore base machine, the SE version adds some key features to justify its claim to be King of the Supernakeds.

The trellis chassis remains and so too the unique balanced supercharged engine that has won so many plaudits already. And although appearing to be naked and stripped to bare essentials, the Z H2 SE also boasts an awesome array of electronic rider aids including, electronic cruise control, integrated riding modes (linking KTRCS sport traction control), power modes, traction & launch control, selectable power modes an up/down quick shifter plus Cornering Management Function, launch control and Intelligent anti-lock Brake System which counts on Brembo Stylema calipers for incredible stopping power.

And while the huge torque of the 998cc inline four brings the horizon rushing into focus, the journey there will now be even smoother as the new edition of electronically damped ø43 mm Showa SFF-CA (cartridge) fork and a high-spec BFRC lite rear shock can now count on Showa’s Skyhook technology. With a 1 millisecond reaction time, Skyhook adjusts the damping electronically to suit vehicle speed and suspension stroke speed with the intention of keeping the body of the vehicle in a constant attitude while the wheels and suspension follow the dips and deviations in the road surface.  Deceleration is also considered, allowing the pitching that occurs under braking to be managed.

Ensuring that Kawasaki’s Sugomi styled predator does not have to move among the shadows at night, an all LED lighting package illuminates the Z H2 SE while the rider can focus on the clarity of a TFT meter panel which is also Bluetooth equipped allowing connection with a Smartphone for a variety of functions courtesy of Kawasaki’s free to download Rideology app. With so many stand out features – and such characteristic Kawasaki state-of-the-art engineering – it’s no wonder the Z H2 SE is adorned with the exclusive “River Mark”.

It’s a lot to take in and certainly a genuine assault on the senses so it’s comforting to know only one word needs to be recalled to create an image of the 2021 Z H2 SE – Supercharge!

Arriving March 2021, the Kawasaki Z H2 will cost £15,899, with the Performance edition priced at £16,999. The Z H2 SE is available in Gloden Blazed Green and Diablo Black and will cost  £18,349, with the Performance Edition priced at £19,449.

To celebrate its 75th anniversary, MV Agusta announced the launch of a special, limited-series anniversary model, the Superveloce 75 Anniversario. Reservations officially opened online through the brand’s newly designed website on Sunday November 15 at 00.00 AM, and were originally planned to close exactly 75 hours later. An unprecedented success for a superb bike celebrating MV Agusta’s legacy of leading-edge technology, passionate craftsmanship and timeless elegance, which will be produced in a limited series of only 75 units.

The already iconic Superveloce was chosen as the base for this anniversary collector’s bike as it represents the perfect balance between modern forms and MV Agusta’s racing legacy. The result is a truly beautiful bike, with its Italian flag colour scheme, the dedicated graphic detailing, the black and gold Inmotion spoke rims and the red Alcantara rider and passenger seats. The engine is the same F3 800-derived inline three-cylinder engine as the Superveloce, developing 147 hp at 13.000 rpm for top speeds of over 240 km/h.

Timur Sardarov, CEO MV Agusta Motor S.p.A., commented: ”I was convinced Superveloce 75 Anniversario would be a success, but I didn’t expect it to go sold-out in just a few seconds. To all those who did not manage to book one, I can only say that their enthusiasm and loyalty are a true inspiration for us all as we continue handcrafting, with immense pride and passion, our unique pieces of motorcycle art.”
