All-new GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R Headline Intermot

Suzuki has debuted two versions of its all-new GSX-R1000 at Intermot, with the GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R machines headlining the Cologne show.

Designed and built from the ground up, both models feature a new frame and swingarm, wrapped around an engine that uses technology developed from the manufacturer’s race-winning GSX-RR MotoGP machine. That same MotoGP knowhow has also helped develop an extensive electronics package that features a three-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) that works in tandem with a 10-mode traction control and sophisticated ABS system.

Also joining the GSX-R stable for 2017 will be an all-new GSX-R125, giving a brand new entry point to the legendary range of sportsbikes.

Suzuki also pulled the wraps off a new V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 650 – as well as XT variants of both of its adventure-touring machines – a GSX-S750 naked street bike, powered by the engine from the legendary GSX-R750.

GSX-R1000 & GSX-R1000R

Suzuki returned to the drawing board when it came to its flagship superbike, designing and building a brand new machine using technology developed from competition in MotoGP. The chief engineer on the project, Shinichi Sahara, used his experience as a former MotoGP technical manager and project manager to develop a new power-plant that produces 202PS at 13,200rpm – Suzuki’s most powerful GSX-R engine, ever – to make sure the GSX-R1000 can reclaim its crown as the king of sportsbikes.

Both the GSX-R1000 and GSX-R1000R utilise an all-new, 999.8cc inline four-cylinder engine, which uses Suzuki Racing Variable Valve Timing (SR-VVT), and a new finger-follower valve train as part of Suzuki’s Broad Power System. Developed for use on the firm’s GSX-RR MotoGP racer, the system allows the new engine to produce strong low-midrange power, before the variable valve timing system boosts top-end output.

Suzuki’s SR-VVT is a compact and lightweight mechanical system, that is built into the intake sprocket and is activated by centrifugal force, while the new finger-follower valve train is 6g lighter than a conventional bucket/tappet system, and allows the engine to rev higher and increases top-end power, with reliability.

Inside the engine there are new pistons, pins, and rings, as well as new camshafts and titanium valves for higher peak power.

Careful thought and planning also went into the engine’s dimensions and layout, to enhance the bike’s cornering performance. The cylinder block incline angle is moved backwards by 6 degrees, reducing the engine length by 22.2mm, the benefits of which are increased front-end feel and increased stability.

Competition in MotoGP has also led to the development of Suzuki’s most comprehensive and sophisticated electronics package, which features a six-directional IMU, 10-mode traction control system, Suzuki’s Motion Track Brake System, and three-rider modes.

Setting the GSX-R1000R apart from the GSX-R1000 is the addition of a bi-directional quick-shifter and a launch control system that allows riders to make smoother, faster starts.

Both models utilise the ‘anti-stoppie’ function of Suzuki’s Motion Track Brake System, but only the GSX-R1000R benefits from its cornering ABS function.

Suspending the GSX-R1000R is the latest generation of Showa’s Balance Free front forks and rear shock, which give more controlled performance and improve front-end feel. The GSX-R1000 model utilises Showa’s Big Piston front forks and Showa shock.

The GSX-R1000 is due to arrive in the spring, with the GSX-R1000R set for arrival late spring.

GSX-R125

For the first time there is a brand new entry point into the GSX-R series for new riders, as Suzuki revealed an all-new GSX-R125.

The development of the GSX-R125 followed the same philosophy that has been applied to all GSX-Rs for the last three decades, with the smallest offering in the legendary range of sportsbikes boasting the best power-to-weight ratio, best torque-to-weight ratio, and best acceleration in its class, thanks to its new, single cylinder 125cc engine. It is also the lightest in the 125cc sportsbike category.

A LED stacked headlight maintains the GSX-R family identity, and there’s also a full LCD dash, and a new keyless ignition – a first for Suzuki – with the easy-start system used on the new flagship GSX-R1000.

New riders will be able to join the GSX-R family when the 125 variant arrives in dealerships late in the summer.

V-Strom 650 & V-Strom 650XT

The V-Strom 650 has been the biggest seller in its market segment across the globe since its introduction in 2004, and for 2017 the new model gets more power, less weight, and traction control, while conforming to new Euro 4 emissions regulations.

Suzuki’s proven 645cc V-twin engine has become widely regarded as one of the best motorcycle engines of its generation, and in the 2017 V-Strom 650 it gets more power and torque, increasing its output to 70PS at 8,800rpm and 62Nm or torque at 6,500rpm.

A new exhaust also boosts power and torque, while saving weight and aiding in a lower centre of gravity.

New on both variants is Suzuki’s low-rpm assist system, which automatically raises engine speed when pulling away, and the new easy-start system first seen on the GSX-S1000 range, as well as the addition of a two-mode traction control system, that can be turned off.

The V-Strom 650 and V-Strom 650XT have both been completely restyled, with a design more akin to the bigger V-Strom 1000.

The XT model boasts more equipment as standard over the V-Strom 650, giving it more off-road intent out of the crate. Wire-spoke wheels provide better absorption on uneven surfaces, while a lower cowling offers additional protection. Hand guards help shield the rider from low-hanging branches or stones and debris caused by a rider in front.

A comprehensive accessories catalogue for both models of the V-Strom 650 will be available, and includes items such as integrated luggage, a centre-stand, touring screen, and heated grips.

The V-Strom 650 and V-Strom 650XT are expected in UK dealerships early 2017.

V-Strom 1000 & V-Strom 1000XT
Suzuki’s flagship adventure bike, the V-Strom 1000, benefits from a host of updates for 2017, including the addition of Suzuki’s Motion Track Brake, cornering ABS system, while a new V-Strom 1000XT was also revealed at Intermot.

Both variants of the popular adventure machine – which get sharper styling for 2017 – utilise the new Motion Track Brake System, which combines information from the machine’s inertial measurement unit (IMU) and wheel speed sensors to allow the ABS to operate and optimise brake pressure when the vehicle is leaned over, as well as in a straight line. The system also automatically applies pressure to the rear brake when front brake pressure rises to a certain level.

Suzuki’s easy-start system, debuted on the GSX-S1000, also features, which means the clutch lever no longer needs to be pulled in to start, and just one push of the starter button is required, and the V-Strom 1000 also gets the low-rpm assist function. The three-mode traction control system from the previous generation model remains.

Extensive wind tunnel testing led to the designer’s giving the V-Strom 1000 a new windscreen, with height and angle adjustment to suit a variety of riders, while hand guards and engine cowling become standard equipment on both the V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 1000XT.

While the base model features 10-spoke, cast-aluminium wheels, the V-Strom 1000XT uses wire-spoke wheels and DID rims for more absorption off-road, and also gets tapered handlebars.

Both models are available in black and white, as well as a new Champion Yellow, which pays homage to the DR Big Dakar-racer from the 1990s. The Champion Yellow V-Strom 1000XT also gets gold anodised rims, reminiscent of Suzuki’s championship-winning motocross range.

A vast range of accessories are available for both machines, with the V-Strom 1000’s popular integrated luggage updated with a new, larger capacity top-box. Other accessories include higher and lower seats, fog lamps, and engine bars.

The anticipated arrival time of the V-Strom and V-Strom 1000XT will be spring.

GSX-S750
Following the launch of the GSX-S1000 last year, which is powered by the revered GSX-R1000 K5 engine, Suzuki has added a new GSX-S750 to its naked street bike lineup, this time using the same engine architecture as the K5 power-plant from the iconic GSX-R750.

The K5 GSX-R750 engine was selected for the GSX-S750 due to its mounting angle, which is closer to vertical than the current GSX-R750 engine, and helps achieve the short wheelbase desired in a naked machine.

The GSX-S750 boasts more power and torque than the outgoing GSR750, with peak power increased to 114PS at 10,500rpm and torque upped to 81Nm at 9,000rpm. This has been possible by the change to new, 10-hole, long-nose fuel injectors from the older 8-hole design on the GSR. The GSX-S also gets a new air box and exhaust.

Enabling riders to open the throttle with greater confidence in a mix of conditions is the addition of a three-mode traction control system. The system continuously monitors front and rear wheel speeds, the throttle position, crank position, and gear position, and when a slide is detected, reduces engine output to deliver smooth, continuous drive.

Suzuki’s easy-start system and low-rpm assist function that were seen on the GSX-S1000 are now featured on the GSX-S750.

Chassis performance is improved with a new swingarm, and braking is enhanced with the addition of radial-mount calipers and new discs.

The GSX-S750 is aggressively styled, in keeping with the GSX-S family, with sharp lines and angles, and a belly pan as standard fitment, and is set to arrive in dealerships early 2017.

New Ducati SuperSport unveiled at INTERMOT

Ducati took advantage of the special press-only day at INTERMOT 2016 to unveil the first of a series of new bikes for 2017. At the Cologne motorcycle fair, Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali took to the stage to present the SuperSport, the company’s latest sport road bike.

“I’m extremely proud to be able to reveal the latest Ducati 2017 bikes, starting with the SuperSport”, stated Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali at the bike’s unveiling. “After sharing a sneak peek with the Ducatista community at WDW 2016, we’re ready to present the bike to the thousands of enthusiasts who had eagerly awaited a sport bike capable of ensuring both fun and comfort, even in everyday riding situations. Expert riders will appreciate the true sports personality of the SuperSport, its excellent road performance and evident penchant for journeying and everyday use. Riders approaching the Ducati sports world for the first time will discover versatility, easy handling and, above all, the very essence of sports riding as Ducati sees it.” Mr. Domenicali then looked ahead to EICMA 2016: “Next month, during the Ducati World Première – to be held on 7 November and streamed live across the globe – we’ll reveal the other bikes being launched by Ducati this coming year, thus completing the range and, we can confidently say, meeting many of the needs and wants of the riders in our community and those who, thanks to these latest machines, will soon be joining it”.

The Ducati SuperSport is designed for those who want a sport-inspired bike that still provides comfort and easy handling on everyday roads. A fun bike that’s versatile and accessible, with the style and soul of a true Ducati thoroughbred.

A lean and mean road machine with a decidedly approachable feel thanks to easy handling, the confidence-inspiring Ducati Safety Pack (Bosch ABS + Ducati Traction Control), the awesome price-quality ratio of the equipment and the long maintenance intervals.

Powering the SuperSport is a twin-cylinder 937 cm³ Testastretta 11° engine, delivering 113 hp and a full yet linear torque curve. Thanks to the three Riding Modes (Sport, Touring and Urban), the SuperSport’s temperament can be adapted to maximise enjoyment whatever the riding conditions. Agile on city streets, comfortable on the motorway and superlative on twisting country roads, the SuperSport is super-versatile. Relaxed rider and passenger positions, good airflow deflection from the height-adjustable screen and the mileage provided by the 16-litre fuel tank also make the new Ducati SuperSport a cool companion on medium-distance rides.

The SuperSport range includes a SuperSport S version featuring fully adjustable Öhlins suspension, the Ducati Quick Shift up/down system and a rear seat cover: the latter are also available as accessories for the SuperSport.

The Supersport will be available in the UK priced at £10,995, £12,295 for Supersport S in red and £12495 for the Supersport S in Silk White.

The new SuperSport is displayed on the Ducati stand (Hall 8 Stand A42/50) together with other new 2017 bikes such as the Monster 821 EURO 4, now available in the new “Dust Grey”, and the Diavel EURO 4. Other all-new developments include the “Volcano Grey” colour for the Multistrada 1200 S, on which technical upgrades have been introduced, and the 1299 Panigale, which now features a new EVO electronics package featuring Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC).

On the eve of INTERMOT 2016, to be held in Cologne (Germany) from 5 to 9 October, Ducati will be previewing some of the latest developments for 2017 and has confirmed that the eagerly awaited SuperSport will be on show. The unveiling of this latest Ducati bike, scheduled to take place on the Ducati stand (Hall 8, Stand A42/50) at 6 pm on Tuesday 4 October, ends the special press-only day of this key international motorcycle exhibition.

After giving all the Ducatisti and motorcycle enthusiasts at WDW2016 an exclusive look at the SuperSport, the new sport road bike from the Bologna-based bike manufacturer is now ready for a wider audience.

The new SuperSport is a bike for those eager to ride sports-style on everyday roads. Fun, versatile and accessible, with true Ducati sports styling and zest, the SuperSport promises exciting, fun riding sensations while ensuring everyday comfort and easy handling whatever the roads are like. An innovative leap that, even before its debut, has won widespread support and aroused considerable interest; at Cologne, the SuperSport is set to steal the limelight to say the least.

INTERMOT also provides a great opportunity to enjoy an international preview of other aspects of the Ducati 2017 range, such as the stylish “Volcano Grey” colour on the Multistrada 1200 S. More than just new colour schemes, there will be appealing, practical technical upgrades: for 2017 the Multistrada 1200 family features a new airbox in the intake zone and new engine calibration; these changes give the twin-cylinder Testastretta DVT even fuller, more satisfying mid-range power delivery (see the new video at www.ducati.com).

At INTERMOT Ducati will also be presenting the new EURO 4 engines for the Monster 821 and Diavel. The Monster 821 range, moreover, now features the appealing yet assertive “Dust Grey” colour, an opaque grey of outstanding freshness and flair that perfectly matches the red frame and wheels.

Major upgrades have also been made to the Ducati Superbike family, which, on the 1299 Panigale and 1299 Panigale S, sees the introduction of the latest EVO version of Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC). These systems, first seen on the exclusive 1299 Panigale S Anniversario, maximise the performance and active safety of this Ducati Superbike. The new DTC and DWC EVO feature a new algorithm that makes their intervention faster and more precise.

At INTERMOT Ducati will be in Hall 8 on Stand A42/50, together with Ducati Scrambler and its “Land of Joy”, where events, entertainment and plenty of bikes, accessories and apparel will ensure visitors to this great biannual bike show get involved and have fun.

The supporting programme of events at INTERMOT Cologne 2016 at a glance:

Event Action Areas – Outdoors
Exciting races, stunt shows and test tracks await visitors on the approx. 70,000 square metres of the Koelnmesse P1 and P8 event areas. On the Saturday of the fair, INTERMOT, together with the organisers of GLEMSECK 101, will be presenting the Sultans of Sprint and the top bikes in the Essenza competition in the legendary 1/8-mile sprints on the drag race strip – making sure that fans of high-performance purist bikes will get the most out of INTERMOT 2016. Dutchman Herman Jolink will be going at full throttle on his Ducati in the drag racing event. Another premiere at INTERMOT 2016: for the first time ever at a trade fair, a dirt track racing circuit! Among others, Dr. Martin Hünning and Dr. Robert Allgaier will be showing why this new sport is becoming increasingly popular. But we haven’t piled up several hundred cubic metres of mud and special flooring exclusively for the dirt trackers: on the Friday and Saturday of INTERMOT, the elite of the German side-by-siders will be competing in a final round of races. This is a unique opportunity to see vehicles that can only normally be seen at the Paris-Dakar rally. Proof that biking under electric power should be taken seriously will be provided by the riders in the e-bike World Challenge, featured by INTERMOT. On the drag race strip, spectators can witness live and at first hand just how much action, passion and power there is packed into the latest electric two-wheelers when they go at full throttle!

In the INTERMOT 2016 stunt shows, the best in the business will turn physics upside down and plant it all on the rear wheel. The who’s who of the stunt scene will be on show, performing before a large audience on the INTERMOT P1 and P8 event areas: Several-times European Champion and the public’s favourite, Herczeg “Mokus“ Balácz will be travelling from Hungary to be at INTERMOT. Equally ready for the off are Dirk Manderbach (BMW), Oliver Ronzheimer (Suzuki) and Chris Rid (Kawasaki), Horst Hoffmann and Dominik Csauth (both Suzuki), Arjan de Graaf (V2 Harley), local hero Dennis Jansen (Yamaha) and the “Legend Team” stunt crew (Husqvarna, Kawasaki) from Moscow. They will all be pulling off every conceivable and inconceivable stunt that they are capable of. The “Two-Stunt-Team” will be presenting cool stunts on four wheels in its quad show. Austrian Günter Schachermayr will be proving with his Vespa that spectacular stunts are even “doable” on a scooter.

Robbie Naumann and his freestyle motocross team will be performing breathtaking jumps, back flips and whips before an amazed audience – almost 20 metres above the ground. All of this makes for a great warm-up, both for the riders and the audience – as on Saturday evening in the LANXESS arena at the NIGHT of the JUMPS, it will all be about winning valuable points for the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) Freestyle MX World Championship.

Real, live riding fun – the test-ride tracks
The test-ride tracks are an absolute must for all visitors to INTERMOT. There is something here for every fan of two-wheelers – from young to old, from lovers of high-performance motorcycles right through to beginners.

The large test-ride track offers traditional, petrol-powered bikes. Anyone in possession of a valid driving licence can try out the latest one- to six-cylinder bikes here. More than 100 cool bikes of all brands and classes will be on hand. Anyone who does not yet have a motorcycle licence or would like to get back in the saddle can get a ride under their belt on the test track for “riding without a licence/as a returner” under expert supervision on the test track.
Scooters and street bikes from 50 to 125 cc make taking the first steps in learning to ride a motorcycle easy. The quad test track promises riding fun on four wheels, where any visitor who is interested in these four-wheelers and has a valid car driving licence can also try one out: simply choose a model from a range of various different ATVs and quads and off you go. Anyone drawn to travel can feel a first whiff of adventure on the touring enduro test track. These big touring bikes can be ridden under expert supervision on the challenging on-road and off-road test track. Superlight versions of enduros and specially prepared trial motorcycles reflect a trend for off-road touring that has recently emerged and this is exactly what the trial test track enables visitors to try out. To illustrate why this trend is growing in popularity, pros show just what can be done with a competition-level trial bike.
Electric mobility on two wheels is not a contradiction in terms. On the inclines and flats of the EV/LEV test track, visitors can experience the fascination and performance of electric drive technology on the latest e-bikes and e-scooters.

The Kids’ mini test track (P8) has two practice circuits ready and waiting for youngsters: one for mini bikes and the other for mini quads. This is where the next generation of motorcycle enthusiasts can have their first go at riding, safely and under careful supervision. Both circuits count towards the “INTERMOT driving licence”, which links in with other activities for children in Hall 5.2.

Action Areas – Indoors
Hall 10.1 – INTERMOT customized
The international customizing scene has been integrated into the event in a standalone, show-within-a-show format under the name “INTERMOT customized”: a tailor-made presentation platform for the target group. The whole of Hall 10.1 will become the central venue for the customizing show. This is where, in addition to the V2 custom scene, the new wave custom scene of café racers and modern adaptations will also be showcased. Numerous special events and activities on the subject of customizing will be running in parallel. Another event that will also be taking place this year again as a part of INTERMOT customized will be the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building. It is here that the “who’s who” of customizers will be putting themselves before an international jury with their spectacular conversions. The world championship focuses mainly on the category of V2 customs, but also addresses the new custom scene with the category of café racers. The top 100 will be on show in Cologne, competing to become the 2016 world champion. In the Garage Area, professionals will be working live on site on project bikes, ensuring every step in the process is clearly explained and demonstrated. Tasks like changing the footrests, handlebars, headlights and indicators will be as expertly explained and performed as shaping and fitting a fuel tank. The area even includes a mobile spray booth. In the Garage Area, visitors can watch over the shoulders of professionals while they go about their work, can enquire about tips and tricks and come away with valuable words of advice for their own projects. In addition to the custom presentations in Hall 10.1, INTERMOT, together with Glemseck 101, is launching the “Essenza” competition: wicked conversions of two-wheelers with two cylinders, reduced to the max, made up of only the barest of essential components, highlighting the unique characteristics of the respective brands. This is where the big-name motorcycle brands take on small custom-bike workshops, aiming to take a podium place in the 1/8-mile sprint and the design category. Following an initial performance of the sprint at Glemseck 101, the final will take place at INTERMOT, along with the presentation of prizes to the winners. Online voting is open to the public for over a month, from the Glemseck festival up until INTERMOT, so that the community can use the time to decide which bike is the winner. When they are not tearing down the drag strip in the outdoor area of INTERMOT at full throttle, the outlandish Sultans of Sprint custom sprint bikes can be admired in a special event area. Biking is a lifestyle, especially for customizers. True customizers live life accordingly. Craftrad brings everything together in its concept store – bikes, fashion, design, attitude. This is where your passion for biking comes alive. On the customizing show stage, “The Stage”, visitors can enjoy talks between professionals, interviews with stars of the scene, the AMD World Championship award ceremony, the ESSENZA prize-giving, selected bike presentations and much besides, all charmingly presented by host Ilka Groenwold. Anyone wanting a restyle in true customizing scene fashion can do so in INTERMOT’s barber shop and tattoo studio. Rounding off the INTERMOT customized programme will be the “Naked Bike” show, hosted by the trade magazine Roadster. This is where visitors will be able to have a close look at unclad motorcycles in a brand-independent presentation, sit on them and get a first feel for these motorcycles – with specialist editors on hand to provide advice.

Hall 10.1 – Sports bikes special event
A particular highlight for fans of motorsport is the Sports bikes special event focusing on the subject of “Athletes and their equipment”. The trade journal PS – Das Sportmotorrad Magazin will present the latest race bikes from the Tuner GP. In the Racing special event, Bike Promotion and other sport event organisers will be showing base models and special conversions for the racing circuits of the world.

The “Boulevard of Touring“, which will run centrally along the northern section of the Boulevard at INTERMOT 2016 will bring the topics of touring and tourism even more to the fore. There is something for everyone in the Tourism Centre, immediately adjacent to the entrance area of Hall 8: advice from specialist travel operators and inspiring ideas for your next trip from hotels in the major holiday regions.

Hall 6 – AREA 4
At INTERMOT 2016, an area dedicated to quads and ATVs has been created to act as a central venue, presenting a market overview and providing an initial general insight into the subject. This is where quad specialists and motorcycle brands that also manufacture quads will showcase their product ranges in quads, ATVs and side-by-sides, divided into four themed areas: sport/off road, utility vehicles, touring, and custom. AREA 4 – showcasing the coolest quads and ATVs, all in one hall! Quadwelt (Quadworld) magazine will be awarding prizes for the best custom quads and ATVs, the ATV and Quad magazine will be presenting the “quads of the year”.

Hall 5.1 – Kids‘ Action
INTERMOT 2016 is the highlight of the year and not just for “grown-up” motorcycle enthusiasts: it is also a real experience for children and teenagers. Hall 5.1 will be entirely dedicated to “Kids’ Action”. Accommodating every age group, the hall offers a balance bike track for toddlers, whilst older children can test their skills on the bicycle and obstacle courses and gain their INTERMOT driving licence, try out Segways and Ninebots, do their first laps at the electric bike and motorcycle riding school or cruise in appropriate style at the classic bikes riding school. And the German Road Safety Organisation (Verkehrswacht) is once again supporting the education of the little visitors in the safe use of roads with a track and a park where they can practise cycling and road use. Of course, there will also be a gaming zone and “survival course“ where they can let off steam. Apart from the tracks, in 2016 the INTERMOT kindergarten will once again be available to take care of the youngsters with games, painting and fun activities, while the parents enjoy the fair. And, saving the best until last, children under 12 enter free and the cost of this fun for youngsters between 12 and 17 is only Euro 2.50 for tickets bought in advance!

Hall 5.2 – INTERMOT e-motion
The home of INTERMOT e-motion, Hall 5.2 is dedicated to the subject of electric mobility. On the ElektroRad stage, pros from the magazines ElektroRad (Electric Bike) and aktiv Radfahren (active Cycling) will be showcasing everything to do with e-bikes, touring, safety, e-scooters and, above all, how much fun can be had with electric two-wheelers. The start of the e-bike test track is also located directly in Hall 5.2. The latest bikes will be showcased and information given about them by the manufacturers. Afterwards, the bikes can be taken for a test ride on the strip! In the e-bike tourism section, INTERMOT will show how to make best use of the power of an e-bike to have an active holiday and which attractive tours are worth taking. In cooperation with Tambiente Magazine, we bring that real holiday feeling to Hall 5.2. Teams from the most exciting regions of Germany and from the neighbouring countries will show you there and then, where your next tour on an e-bike could take you.

INTERMOT Cologne will be open daily from 5 to 9 October 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on 7 October from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, 5 October is reserved exclusively for trade visitors. The 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed Warming up to go Full Throttle

The hundreds of exceptional competition cars and motorcycles are positioned in their paddocks, the motor racing stars are arriving, the supercars are being polished and the rally cars are earning their first mud splatters up at the Forest Rally Stage, all ahead of the 24th edition of the sell-out Goodwood Festival of Speed opening its gates at 7 am on Friday 24 June to thousands of excited enthusiasts.

Despite the recent rain, the weather forecast is currently promising a dry and sunny outlook for all three days of the 2016 Festival of Speed, which this weekend will be celebrating the theme of ‘Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power.’ This 2016 theme offers Goodwood an outstanding opportunity to showcase many of the fastest and most powerful machines ever conceived, illustrating motorsport’s continual quest for power.

As always, this weekend’s Festival of Speed has something for everyone, from a huge roll call of the very top drivers and riders, including current F1 stars, plus Grand Prix cars, seven current Formula 1 teams, rally champions, endurance racing legends, NASCAR, Indy, BTCC, WRC, WTCC, supercars, competition bikes, GAS extreme action sports, off-road buggies, the peace and tranquillity of the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours lawn, and much much more besides.

In addition, Festival of Speed spectators will be able to marvel at the impressive and imposing ‘Central Feature’ installation, celebrating one hundred years since the founding of the important BMW brand this year.

Ahead of all of this though, the Goodwood Moving Motor Show kicks off the annual motoring excitement today (Thursday 23 June), with hundreds of the very latest new passenger car models – many making their UK or world debuts – being driven up the celebrated Goodwood Hill.

All in all, it promises to be an exciting the memorable weekend!

Bike Legends add to Silverstone Classic Showcase

Already firmly established as the premier event on the global historic motor racing calendar, this summer’s Silverstone Classic (29-31 July) will – for the very first time – feature top class bike track action with a dazzling array of past World Champions to the fore.

Attending superstars from the two-wheeled realm will include 1987 500cc World Champion Wayne Gardner, triple GP World Champion ‘Fast Freddie’ Spencer and seven-time GP World Champion Phil Read.

“We are thrilled to be broadening the Classic’s appeal still further via the addition of these amazing bikes plus their legendary riders,” said Nick Wigley, CEO of organisers, Goose Live Events. “It’s the first time the Classic has ever served up high-quality two- and four-wheeled racers and to have heroes such as Wayne, Freddie and Phil at Silverstone is going to be just fantastic.”

In total, around ten top bikes from the golden era of GP motorcycle racing will wow the crowds when lapping the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit on the Saturday and Sunday. Moreover, the Classic’s widely-praised open paddock policy will also enable visitors to meet and greet the star riders and see their amazing machinery up close.

The impressive motorcycle grid comes from World GP Bike Legends, an organisation set up last year with Gardner as Rider Ambassador to provide fans – both new and old – with an unparalleled experience of watching former Grand Prix stars riding original screaming 2-strokes which were so popular in the eighties and nineties.

“It’s an honour for the bikes to be invited to such an unbelievably successful car event,” admitted the Aussie ace. “We’re putting together a field of 500cc and GP bikes, and Freddie Spencer, Phil Read, Jim Redman, Didier de Radigues, Jose Cardoso have already signed up to be at Silverstone. These bikes will provide a spine-chilling spectacle when they start up and roar past on the straights – it will be an absolutely fantastic show.”

As another crowd-pleaser for motorcycle fans, Triumph will be showcasing an impressive display in the busy infield area. Over the three-day festival, the infield is also home to more than 100 car clubs exhibiting in excess of 10,000 privately-owned classic machines.

General admission tickets give access to all pits, paddock and infield displays as well as an expanded number of trackside grandstands and the majority of the family entertainment including funfair rides and live music concerts from bands such as The Boomtown Rats, Reef and The Stranglers. All tickets must be purchased in advance, and full details – together with information about hospitality packages and weekend festival camping – can be found on the official www.silverstoneclassic.com website.

Bugatti Chiron to go Full Throttle on The World Famous Goodwood Hill

Goodwood Festival of Speed is delighted to announce that the car Bugatti call “the world’s most powerful, fastest, most luxurious and most exclusive production super sports car,” Bugatti Chiron will be making its UK dynamic debut at the world’s most luxurious motoring celebration, now just one week away.

After its global premiere at this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, Festival of Speed visitors will be able to get up close to this incredible car, named after Monegasque racing driver Louis Chiron, as it prepares to tear up the infamous Goodwood hill.

The Chiron is the latest generation of Bugatti ultimate super sports cars and is a completely new development. The sports car manufacturer from Molsheim, with its long tradition of combining luxurious design with high-performance, has taken the unique features of a modern Bugatti to a new level and developed a super-charged machine that has become significantly better in every respect. With a power output of 1,500HP, unprecedented for production vehicles, an exceptionally high torque value of 1,600Nm between 2,000 and 6,000rpm, and a wide variety of technical innovations, the Chiron sets new standards.

In its Top Speed mode, the car can reach a maximum speed limited to 261 mph for road use, but this is by no means the end of the road for the Bugatti Chiron. The super car is well-positioned to become the next world speed record holder and reach a maximum speed significantly above the record of 268 mph currently held by Bugatti.

The Chiron will be built at the company’s headquarters in Molsheim starting in late summer, and will be strictly limited to 500 units. The basic price is €2.4 million net. Advance orders have currently been received for more than 200 and the first vehicle is due to be delivered to a lucky customer this autumn.

“The Chiron is the perfect embodiment of this year’s Festival theme: ‘Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power’, says Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. “We are looking forward to presenting the Chiron to friends and fans of the Bugatti brand with its UK premiere at this long-standing event.”

Festival of Speed founder Lord March said, “I’m thrilled that Bugatti have chosen the Festival of Speed to give the fabulous new Chiron its UK dynamic debut. It’s certain to be an absolute star of the Michelin Supercar Run.”

Cholmondeley Power And Speed Celebrates Another Successful Event

This year’s Cholmondeley Power and Speed (CPAS) has been a huge success with enormous visitor numbers through the gates thanks to an action-packed programme of content on land, air and water.

The three-day extravaganza included the first running of Motorshow Live! – Cholmondeley’s ride and drive event – a supercar celebration headlined by the amazing Ferrari FXX, a beer, food and comedy festival, aerial acrobatics thanks to the G-EWIZ Muscle Biplane, not to mention superbikes, Group B rally cars and pre-War behemoths.

This incredible line-up of content really brought in the crowds with Cholmondeley Power and Speed 2016 recording a gate of over 40,000 visitors over the course of the weekend.

Running for the duration of Friday morning, Motorshow Live! saw the Cholmondeley track given over to manufacturers and dealers, allowing them to offer test drives to guests and VIPs in their latest models.

Taking to the famous course were Lexus in the rapid RC F and GS F, Holdcroft Honda with the Civic Type-R hot hatch, Holdcroft Nissan with the LEAF EV, BlueBell BMW in the BMW M4 Convertible and Oakmere Motor Group, with the Lotus Evora 400, Exige Sport 350, Caterham 620R and Morgan Aero 8.

Throughout the weekend, visitors could feast their eyes on a full range from Lexus, Honda, Nissan, Lotus, Caterham, Morgan and BMW at stands located in the infield.

With one of this year’s major themes being Supercars: Past, Present and Future, Saturday saw the arrival at Cholmondeley of the star of the show, one of the most remarkable supercars of all time, the Ferrari FXX.

A race-prepared version of the legendary Enzo, the FXX is incredibly rare with only 30 made, all of which were meant to be track-only cars. Appearing at Cholmondeley was the only road-legal version – and it thrilled crowds, its ear-splitting V12 howling around the course.

The FXX was joined by a host of other head-turning supercars, with the Gumball 3000 crew causing a stir in a Mercedes AMG GT3, K-1 Attack and an Aston Martin Vanquish, while a pack of thoroughbred historic supercars – including the Ferrari Daytona and Lamborghini Countach – also took to the track.

Two-wheeled highlights included a 1959 Vincent Ts Viscount and a 1961 Norton Manx and demonstrations from the highly skilled Supermoto UK riders.

A concours was also hosted by Cheshire Classic Cars, with Best Presented going to Rob Woodall’s Ford Mustang Convertible, Judges’ Choice going to Jane Weitzmen’s Toyota 2000GT and the Peoples’ Choice being awarded to Ron Pearson’s Ferrari 458 Italia. Overall Best of Show went to Keith Ashworth’s Mercedes 300SL Roadster.

On Saturday evening, the event hosted its first ever comedy festival. Stand-up comic Adam Rushton compered the event, which was opened by Duncan Oakley, a regular on the festival circuit, including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

BBC Radio 4 regular JoJo Sutherland continued the entertainment before BBC Jesting About regular Rahul Kholi took to the stage. The night’s headline act was Ray Peacock who has appeared on Skins, Dr Who, Not Going Out and Russell Howard’s Good News.

While watching the stand-up show, visitors could enjoy food from a selection of specialist stalls and artisan suppliers from wood fired pizza, Mediterranean and traditional English to Thai, Japanese and Tapas. In addition, Hook Norton Brewery hosted a beer festival with a selection of over 20 craft beers and ciders from local micro-breweries.

Throughout the weekend, rib rides entertained crowds by the lake and scramblers showed off their skills on the off-road circuit and, in the skies, the Muscle Biplane G-ewiz performed an incredible display on Saturday and Sunday, hovering like a Harrier and performing double-hammerheads, complete rolls and even flying backwards.

Out on the track, it was the Ariel Atom 3.5, driven by Niki Faulkner, which got the fastest lap of the weekend with a time of 60.98 secs. He took the prize for post-‘66 competitors. For pre-‘66, it was Keith Fell in the Lotus Elan 26R who was quickest, with a time of 73.79 secs.

The most consistent car of the weekend was the Nash Healey, driven by Steve Graham, who received the regularity car award, with Ben Luke on the GG Quadster claiming the award for the most consistent motorcycle.

All four of these winners received a Zenith El Primero from Cholmondeley Power and Speed partner Zenith Watches.

James Hall, event director said: “Despite it being a damp weekend, It’s been a fantastic occasion, with some incredible content and a number of firsts for the event. We’ve been delighted with the success of our inaugural Motorshow Live! while the beer, food and comedy festival was a wonderful added element.

“We’d like to thank everyone involved in making this year’s event such a success and look forward to welcoming competitors, visitors and exhibitors alike back to Cholmondeley Power and Speed in 2017.”

Some words from key sponsors, partners and personalities:

Catherine Hurst, Head of Marketing, Brown Shipley: “It’s our second year at Cholmondeley and it’s been even better this year than last year. We’ve had a fantastic time with our co-sponsors, Lexus and Zenith, who have just been amazing. The whole team at Cholmondeley has been amazing and together with the second-to-none catering from Horseradish our clients have had a wonderful time. As a business we’re just so glad we did this sponsorship.”

Rebecca McDermott, Regional Brand Director North and Central Europe, Zenith watches said:
“It was fantastic to be at Cholmondeley Power and Speed and officially list the times of the competitors. With such a challenging track and mixed conditions, the skills of the drivers and riders were there for all to see. We’d like to congratulate everyone who took part over the weekend, particularly the four winners who each received our El Primero watch. The Zenith stand at the Brown Shipley area was well attended throughout the weekend and it was fantastic to share our brand with a very knowledgeable and enthusiast audience.”

Jonathan Jarrett, md of Oakmere Group: “Every year, Cholmondeley is the event that we look forward to most. The collection of cars from collectors, owners and manufacturers is fantastic and everyone who attends is a real enthusiast. Because of that, we always put a lot of effort into our stand, by bringing the cars that we think we really attract the interest.

“This year we’ve had a fantastic show. Motorshow Live! on Friday morning was a great success with over 100 test drives on the track. It has been amazing to demonstrate our range of British sports cars in the right surroundings. We’ve sold two cars this weekend.

“The track itself is fantastic to drive, extremely challenging yet so picturesque. There’s very little margin for error and it’s really rewarding. There’s just so much passion here that everyone just gets drawn along with it.”

Nikki Faulkner, driving the Ariel Atom, was fastest of all over the weekend with a time of 60.98 secs: “I’ve come to Cholmondeley pretty much every year since it first started, and I’ve seen it get bigger and better. The vibe is fantastic, with a great mix of racing cars, rally cars and bikes. Everyone has lots of passion and it feels laid back – it’s easy to get around and see everything. The track itself is very challenging.

“You have to know it to go quick on it. It’s quite bumpy and narrow, there are trees to avoid and hay bales, a big jump at the end…it’s certainly got character and it’s a real test of the car. You have to learn to adapt very quickly because the grip level changes through the weekend. I’m lucky to have been here so many times and I’ve got a great car in the Ariel Atom, one of the best cars in the UK, so light and fast, with sensational handling.”

Victoria Thorley, General Sales Manager, Honda Holdcroft:
“It’s our first year at Cholmondeley and we’ve had a fantastic time. The customers have really enjoyed visiting our stand and looking at our range of models. The new Civic Type-R has proved a huge hit, we did customer drives on the Friday at Motorshow Live! and I have to say that the experience was very successful. Customers loved driving the car on the track – quicker than they can on the public road! All our customers are over the moon.”

David Haynes, Nissan Holdcroft: “Cholmondeley is a well-run event with something for everybody from hardcore petrolheads to the regular man in the street who wants to look at a range of cars. The site is very well situated and it’s a well-run family day out. Motorshow Live! on the Friday and the traction action throughout the weekend has meant it’s been an active and progressive couple of days for us with a great atmosphere.”

Star bikes Set to Stun at Cholmondeley Power and Speed

Organisers of this year’s Cholmondeley Power and Speed are upshifting their bike action with a thrilling selection of unique machines and history-filled racers.

British engineer Allen MIllyard, will be taking to the Cholmondeley Track on two of his unique and powerful hand-built motorcycles. The one-off Viper V10 is built around a Viper 8-litre V10 engine, with the forks, tank, exhausts, sub frames, handlebars, mudguards swimming arm and wheel hubs, all hand built. The result is a bike with 500bhp and around 525lb of torque, capable of 207mph.

The second bike Allen will be bringing is the award-winning Flying Millyard. Named after the Flying Merkels, the bike is powered by a gigantic, 5.0-litre V-twin engine designed for an aeroplane. The retro-styled custom bike may not be as powerful as the Viper V10 – with 80bhp and a top speed 100mph – but it is a true sight to behold on track.

Also set to compete over the weekend is a 1959 Vincent Viscount. This bike broke the AMA Land Speed Record in the 1000 MPS – VG Class, with a speed of 131.684 mph. A new record was also set in the 1000 – MPS – CG Class of 124.862. With further modifications since then, it will be thrilling to see what it can achieve on the Cholmondeley track.

A 1981 Yamaha TZ350H appearing at the event has a rich racing history. Ridden by former GP star Donnie McLeod from 1982 – 1984, the duo won the Bill Ivy Trophy in only their second race as a pairing. In total, over 18 months, Donnie and the TZ350H achieved 18 wins and 22 podiums and won the Sponsors Association Series.

Bringing sidecar action to the track will be a 1956 Norton Dominator 99. This particular example of the model, which was originally developed as a competitor to the Triumph Speed Twin, was turned into a sidecar outfit in 1964. Since then it has been raced on grass tracks in the 60s, in the Thundersprint in the 00s and most recently in events such as Cholmondeley.

Further bike action will be provided by Supermoto UK, who will be bringing ten of the sport’s top riders to the event in June to show off their skills and entertain crowds of all ages.

James Hall, event director, said: “The bike action, from superbikes and classic racers, to sidecar outfits and Supermoto UK riders, always proves a popular element on track. These bikes offer just a glimpse of the wide variety and rich heritage set to be represented at Cholmondeley this year and we’re excited to reveal further models competing over the coming weeks.”

Cholmondeley Power and Speed is this year celebrating Supercars: Past, Present and Future which will include stunning displays and thrilling on-track action. The activity will give attendees the chance to get up close and personal to some of the most powerful, eye-catching and revered supercars in the world.

The 2016 staging of the event will also feature the inaugural Motorshow Live! Taking place on the Friday, this all-new element of Cholmondeley Power and Speed will give car manufacturers the opportunity to demonstrate their latest models on track while enabling guests to test drive in a unique racing environment. Already committed are Lexus, Blue Bell BMW and Holdcroft Honda, with Oakmere Motor Group also set to showcase their latest models from Lotus, Morgan and Caterham.

On Friday and Saturday evenings, Cholmondeley will be hosting a beer and food festival for the first time, with stand-up comedy set to entertain attendees on Saturday night. Entry to the evening activity is included with day tickets, however visitors who wish to attend just for the food, beer and comedy festival can purchase tickets for £15 for adults and £10 for children, allowing access to the site from 6pm on Saturday 11th June.

Additional features and content on land (on both two and four wheels), air and water will be announced over the coming weeks, with all elements of the event once again set against the stunning backdrop of Cholmondeley Castle and its beautiful parkland.

Further information and tickets are available at www.cpop.co.uk for the event at Cholmondeley Castle, Malpas, Cheshire. Adult tickets are priced from £24 with children’s tickets priced from £7.

Carl ‘Foggy’ Fogarty Returns to Festival of Speed 2016

Carl Fogarty will return to the Goodwood Festival of Speed for the first time in eight years this June as he prepares to celebrate Triumph’s glorious heritage.

Representing the Triumph brand, Foggy, as he is known, will ride two of the British marque’s current bikes, the Speed Triple and the Thruxton R. He will also ride two bikes supplied by the National Motorcycle Museum, the Triumph Bonneville that Malcolm Uphill took to victory in the Production TT and the 750cc Production TT winning Triumph Trident, known as ‘Slippery Sam’.

Foggy will ride these four bikes a total of four times over Saturday and Sunday at the Festival, forming part of the joint Triumph/National Motorcycle Museum “Past and Present” feature. While not in use on the Hill, the bikes will be stationed in the Motorcycle Paddock and on display for the duration of the event.

The Lancashire lad is regarded as somewhat Superbike royalty, being the most successful World Superbike racer of all time, scoring four WSBK titles in 1994, 1995, 1998 and 1999. Alongside his World Superbike exploits, Foggy competed at the Isle of Man TT in a grand total of 26 races, winning three – The 1989 Production 750 race and the 1990 Formula 1 and Senior TTs. He also broke the lap record in 1992, setting a time of 18 minutes and 18.8 seconds at an average speed of 123.61mph, a record that stood for seven years.

Other successes for Fogarty include victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the Bol d’Or, the Ulster Grand Prix and the North West 200. In 1993 Foggy dominated the North West, setting a new lap record and winning both superbike races, beating road-racing legends Joey and Robert Dunlop to the top step. He last appeared at the festival in 2008.

Carl said, “I am excited to be returning to the Goodwood Festival of Speed this year. It is a special event in the motorsport calendar and I’m thrilled to be representing Triumph, especially on such iconic bikes from the past and present. Hopefully we can provide a real spectacle for the thousands of spectators.”

Top Ten Fastest Supercars Around The Cholmondeley Track Revealed

As organisers of Cholmondeley Power and Speed are finalising the entry list for 2016, with the theme Supercars: Past, Present and Future, they have studied the lap times of the fastest supercars that have competed on the famous, nail-biting track since the event began in 2008.

10 – Aston Martin Centenary Vanquish – 68.46 seconds

Created to celebrate Aston Martin’s 100th anniversary, this stunning special edition of the Vanquish took to the Cholmondeley track in the marque’s centenary year – 2013. With 565bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds, this important piece of Aston Martin history completed its lap in the tenth quickest time.

9 – Ford GT – 68.08 seconds

Inspired by the legendary GT40, this eye-catching supercar has 542bhp and a 0-60mph time of 3.4 seconds. When it competed in 2014 the high-performance model, showcasing the skill of the Ford Special Vehicle Team, set a very competitive time in a real crowd-pleasing lap.

8 – Bentley Continental Supersport – 67.09 seconds

Before the current Continental GT Speed arrived, the 621bhp Supersport was Bentley’s fastest and most powerful production car ever with a 0-60mph time of 3.7 seconds and a 204mph maximum. The elegant model sped around the track back in 2010 to set this top ten-worthy time.

7 – Jaguar XJ220 – 67.05 seconds

With a top speed of 213mph and a 0-60mph time of 3.5 seconds, the futuristic looking Jaguar XJ220 was at one time the fastest production car in the world. In 2012 one of only 281 of these rare motors was a hotly anticipated, and very quick, competitor at the Cheshire-based event.

6 – Ferrari 458 Italia – 66.59 seconds

The Ferrari 458 Italia is an award-winning supercar that can go from 0 to 62mph in 3.4 seconds. There’s been more than one 458 Italia at Cholmondeley over the years, but this best time was achieved in 2012.

5 – Porsche Carrera 4S – 65.28 seconds

With 395bhp and a 0-62mph time of 4.1 seconds, the Carrera 4S’ 3.8-litre flat-six engine powered it to within touching distance of the top five. In 2013 it came second in its class, beaten only by the fastest supercar to ever take to the Cholmondeley track.

4 – Nissan GT-R – 64.99 seconds

In 2012 the GT-R was driven by Jann Mardenborough, who was the first British winner of Nissan’s GT Academy the year before. He entertained crowds with a highly competitive lap in the 493bhp car, which can reach 60mph from a standing start in just 2.7 seconds.

3 – Porsche 911 Turbo S – 64.81 seconds

Known affectionately as the ‘everyday supercar’, the 552bhp Turbo S can do 0-60mph in three seconds. When it took to the track in 2014 this seventh-generation 911, powered by a twin turbo-charged 3.8 litre engine, posted a very impressive time.

2 – McLaren 650S – 63.87 seconds

Transferring five decades of F1 experience to the road, the McLaren 650S has a top speed of 207mph and can go from 0-60mph in under three seconds. It raced around the Cholmondeley track recording the second fastest supercar time in 2014.

1 – Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 – 63.54 seconds and 62.64 seconds

Holding the two fastest times for a supercar on track is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4. In 2011, the Spyder Performante version set an impressive lap time of 63.54 seconds. Two years later, the lightweight Superleggera went even faster. It treated visitors to a truly blistering track performance, shaving almost a second off the Performante’s time. In the hands of precision driver and race car instructor Tim-Marshall Rowe it posted a time of just 62.64 seconds. The video of his lap is available to view here – http://bit.ly/1W5Uh7b

Cholmondeley Power and Speed’s celebration of supercars past, present and future will include stunning displays and thrilling on-track action.
