The New Triumph Speed 400 And Scrambler 400 X

The New Speed 400 And Scrambler 400 X two all-new Triumph Modern Classics

The Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X: two all-new models joining the Triumph range in 2024.

Born into a peerless bloodline, the Speed 400 roadster joins Triumph’s most successful modern classic line-up, the Speed Twin 900 and 1200 while the Scrambler 400 X takes its rugged design cues from the Scrambler 900 and 1200, with an off-road pedigree that goes back to the first factory Scramblers of the 1950s.

Designed from the ground-up with a brand-new single engine platform at their heart, these new models are designed to deliver a fun, agile and confidence-inspiring ride for riders of all ages and experience levels.

Together, with class-leading capability, rider-focused technology and category-leading quality and detail, and with a high level of standard specification, long service intervals and a comprehensive warranty, these accessible new models represent incredible value for money and bring Triumph’s iconic style, quality and performance to a whole new generation of Triumph riders.

TRIUMPH’S ICONIC SPEED AND SCRAMBLER DESIGN DNA
Conceived and designed in Hinckley, UK, these two new additions to the modern classics line-up have been developed with the same exacting attention to detail as Triumph’s most celebrated models. They are instantly recognisable thanks to their timeless Triumph silhouettes, signature sculpted fuel tanks and classic engine profiles and have been designed to deliver all of the quality, feel and presence of their larger capacity stablemates.

Traditional touches, like the distinctive finned cylinder head and traditional exhaust header clamps combine with contemporary details like the upswept silencer, bold graphics and sensitively-incorporated technology, such as concealed liquid-cooling and a flowing exhaust run with hidden primary silencer. All combining to deliver that unmistakeable Triumph modern classic style.

The high-quality finish and elegant detailing continues with the trademark black powder-coated engine casings, tough gold anodised forks, high-quality paint and logo detailing which ensure the finish on these new models is premium throughout.

The Speed 400’s two-tone paint schemes, each featuring a prominent Triumph tank graphic, reflect its dynamic roadster style, with Carnival Red, Caspian Blue and Phantom Black colours available.

Accentuating the Scrambler 400 X’s all-road attitude are lots of purposeful and practical features, including protection for the headlight, radiator and sump, as well as handguards, a handlebar brace with pad and a longer front mudguard.

The Scrambler 400 X is available in three stylish and contemporary colour schemes, each featuring Triumph’s distinctive ‘Scrambler’ tank stripe and triangle badge, with Matt Khaki Green and Fusion White, Carnival Red and Phantom Black, plus Phantom Black and Silver Ice options.

Iván Cervantes Claims Guinness World Records Title

Iván Cervantes claims Guinness World Records title for the greatest distance on a motorcycle in 24 hours with a Tiger 1200 GT Explorer.

Iván Cervantes, 5x Enduro World Champion and Triumph Global Ambassador, has officially claimed the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS™ title for ‘The greatest distance on a motorcycle in 24 hours (individual)’.

Riding a Tiger 1200 GT Explorer on the High-Speed Ring at the Nardò Technical Center in Italy, Iván travelled more than 4012km in a 24 hour period, beating the previous record of 3406km by a huge margin of more than 600km.

The record attempt was witnessed and validated by a GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator on 30th April 2023, with a final confirmed distance of 4012.53km – a distance equivalent to travelling from London to the Great Pyramid of Giza in 24 hours!

Watch the full story of Iván’s incredible challenge

THE MAN
Iván Cervantes is a 5 times Enduro World Champion, 21 times Spanish Enduro Champion, and 5 times Spanish Motocross Champion. In July 2021, Iván was announced as one of Triumph’s new Off-Road ambassadors, helping to develop the upcoming range of motocross and enduro bikes.

Since joining the Triumph team, Iván has seen great success in riding and competing on Triumph adventure motorcycles, sealing wins at the Baja Aragón, 1000 Dunas Raid, and Basella Maxi-Trail Race.

In preparation for the record attempt, in addition to intensive physical training on his own Tiger 1200 Rally Pro, Iván began carefully planning his nutrition and sleep strategy, in partnership with Professor Andrew Bagshaw at the University of Birmingham.

THE MOTORCYCLE
The motorcycle used for the attempt was a Tiger 1200 GT Explorer, chosen at random from the production line at Triumph’s factory in Hinckley, UK. No special modifications were made to the bike, other than completing the recommended running in and first service schedule before the attempt was undertaken.

The Tiger 1200 family has been designed to deliver the ultimate in adventure bike touring capability, with exceptional comfort and unbeatable character. For the record attempt, features such as the 30 litre fuel tank and excellent wind protection were invaluable in ensuring Iván could continue riding, whatever challenges he encountered along the way.

Heated grips and seats provided additional comfort during the cold early-morning hours and unexpected downpours of rain, while the powerful T-Plane triple engine and advanced electronics provided effortless power and control. High-intensity LED lights ensured Iván always had exceptional visibility when riding, even in the complete darkness of the remote testing facility at Nardò.

Underlining the excellent performance and reliability of the Tiger 1200, the only maintenance required on the bike was a single, planned tyre change half way through the attempt, where the standard fit Metzeler TOURANCE™ Next tyres were refreshed as the rain started and night began to fall.

THE RECORD
The existing GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title of 3406.17km was achieved by American Carl Reese on 26th February 2017, recording an average speed over 24 hours of 141.9km/h.

Riding consistently at speeds of over 200km/h at the Nardò Technical Center in Italy, Iván surpassed the existing record with an incredible 5 hours to spare in the 24 hour window. Not content to simply beat the record, he set his sights on defining a new benchmark for this challenge – 4000km.

In the 5 hours that followed, he proceeded to ride a further 606km – essentially matching the existing record then continuing to ride the equivalent of the width of France in addition.

The record attempt was witnessed by an official GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS adjudicator, who validated the final distance travelled in 24 hours as 4012.53km, with an average speed of 167.79km/h.

KEY FACTS

  • Attempt duration: 24 hours
  • Total distance travelled: 53km

QUOTES
Iván Cervantes – ‘The Tiger 1200 GT Explorer was the perfect bike for this attempt. It’s very comfortable to ride for a long time. For sure, the hardest part was the weather, because it started to rain, but this bike has a very big screen and excellent protection, which helped me a lot. It is a very special bike for me. It’s not easy to ride for 24 hours in a row but, in the end, the record is mine with this amazing bike!’

Nick Bloor, CEO, Triumph Motorcycles – ‘Iván’s achievement in taking the Guinness World Records title on the Tiger 1200 is simply incredible! His determination and perseverance have led him not only to beat the existing record, but to add almost 20% to the distance travelled in 24 hours. An outstanding effort, and one that everyone at Triumph is incredibly proud to have supported.’

Victor Fenes, Official Adjudicator, Guinness World Records – ‘I am truly humbled to have witnessed Iván Cervantes’s awe-inspiring achievement of setting the Guinness World Records title for the Greatest distance on a motorcycle in 24 hours (individual). Iván’s unwavering dedication and Triumph’s support embody the values we hold dear at Guinness World Records. It is a true testament to the indomitable spirit of human determination and the pursuit of greatness.’

Triumph Thruxton RS Review

Many thanks to Triumph UK I spent three weeks with this beautiful machine which culminated with The Distinguished Gentlemans Ride in West Sussex.

As it come down the ramp my first impression is it’s a well made, beautiful looking and throaty sounding modern classic bike, here my quick review.

The Triumph Thruxton has been an iconic motorcycle since its first release in the 60’s. The Thruxton was named after the famous Thruxton Circuit, where Triumph had a lot of success. Fast forward to today, and the latest version of the Thruxton, the RS, is a modern classic that pays homage to its rich history while incorporating the latest technology and engineering.

The Thruxton RS is powered by a 1200cc parallel-twin engine that produces 103 horsepower, this engine is mated to a six-speed transmission and is capable of reaching a stated top speed of 140 mph.

The Thruxton RS has a classic design that is inspired by the original Thruxton café racer. It features a low-slung café racer-style seat (no pillion), a classic round headlight, and a sleek fuel tank. The bike also features a modern digital instrument cluster, LED lighting, and a single-sided swingarm.

The engine is ready to unleash its power whenever you command it to do so and the sporty suspension setup further enhances the riding experience, especially along the tricky bends. The rear Ohlins dampers are adjustable and combined with the front Showa forks, the bike delivers quite a planted ride on uneven surfaces despite its suspension being oriented towards athletic characteristics.

The Thruxton RS is equipped with a range of modern features that make it a great choice for riders who want a classic look with modern performance. Suffice to say that Thruxton RS would be easy to manage in the dense city areas, but it is on the highways where it truly shines. The bike also has a range of rider aids, including ABS, and a traction control system.

The Thruxton RS is a great choice for riders who want a powerful and stylish motorcycle. Its classic café racer styling is sure to turn heads, while its modern features and powerful engine make it a great choice for both experienced and novice riders. With its combination of power and style, the Triumph Thruxton RS is sure to be a hit with riders of all levels.

My Conclusion
Overall, the Triumph Thruxton RS ticks all the vital boxes and delivers great value for its price which may seem a bit on the higher side to some, but the flawless finishing and the fun riding experience make up for it.

As for the riding experience, the Thruxton RS combines the best of both aggressive riding experience and traditional café racer goodness. If you’re looking for a classic cafe racer look with modern features, then the Thruxton RS is an obvious choice.

Like with the Triumph Bobber this is a naked bike so once you take it above say 50 mph you will get buffeted about. You could invest in their Dolphin fairing but personally I think it ruins the looks but each to their own.

The Triumph Thruxton RS is now officially my 2nd favourite modern classic coming in a very close 2nd to the Triumph Bonneville Bobber.

Thanks to Ells from Ride and Rest for his insta 360 footage whilst in the DGR

As earlier stated I took part in the The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in West Sussex for the first time. To be perfectly honest I’m not a group rider more of a solo rider, I like to go at my own pace so I was apprehensive at taking part in the DGR. I have to say I really enjoyed the ride everyone was courteous, no overtaking at speed etc. My only issue on the ride with Thruxton was there was a lot of stop and start due to traffic and found the bike was getting quite hot.

Celebrating 10 Years of Triumph and The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride

Celebrating 10 Years Of Triumph And The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride With The Launch of a Stunning New Bonneville T120 Black DGR Limited Edition.

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride (DGR) unites hundreds of thousands of classic and vintage style motorcycle fans all over the world to raise funds and awareness for men’s health. Founded in Sydney Australia in 2012, the DGR was created by Mark Hawwa as a wonderful new way to bring together motorcycle enthusiasts, focused on a common cause for good. Growing year on year, today the DGR spans the world with more than 90,000 riders taking to the streets in more than 800 cities, with more than $37m USD raised for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health to date.

Triumph became the official motorcycle partner of the DGR from 2014, bringing a commitment to increase awareness, grow participation and ultimately increase fundraising in support of this worthy cause.  Everyone involved at Triumph is proud to have played a key role, in collaboration with Mark Hawwa and his team, in growing this incredible community. From providing financial support and resources that have helped to raise the profile of the DGR globally, to rewarding its participants, sharing the passion and drive that has made the DGR the world’s largest on-road charity motorcycling event.

One of Triumph’s most significant contributions has been in growing awareness and motivating fundraisers around the world, by providing motorcycles from Triumph’s Modern Classic range as rewards for the top fundraisers. In previous years this has included unique motorcycles, such as a one-of-a-kind Triumph Thruxton RS DGR Edition and a custom ‘1959 Legends’ Triumph Bonneville T120 and matching Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar, awarded to the 2022 ride’s highest fundraiser as part of a collaboration between Triumph and Gibson.

2023 marks the 10th year of this incredible partnership and represents a huge milestone for Triumph and the DGR.  To celebrate this landmark anniversary and help make the 2023 DGR event the biggest and most successful to date, Triumph have created 250 exclusive new Bonneville T120 Black Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride Limited Edition motorcycles.

Designed with a stylish DGR metallic black and white paint scheme, featuring official DGR branding with a custom logo on the tank and side panels, gold detailing and distinctive brown seat, each one comes with a numbered certificate, signed by DGR founder Mark Hawwa and Triumph CEO Nick Bloor – with edition 001 being presented to the highest fundraised for the 2023 ride.

Additionally in our 10th year, we are thrilled to strengthen our relationship further by becoming an official clothing partner of the DGR, with an all-new limited edition range of lifestyle clothing to celebrate the DGR, created to raise additional funds for men’s health.

The entire Triumph community, from our network of dealers and fans across the world, to our staff, designers and engineers are committed to continue to grow the reach and impact of the DGR in support of this incredible cause for good.

Together we will make 2023 the biggest and most successful DGR yet.

DGR founder Mark Hawwa
“If anyone had said 10 years ago that we’d be celebrating a decade of partnership with Triumph Motorcycles, I would have laughed. That first year of signing with Triumph has always been a highlight for me. It felt exciting, and that excitement still carries on every year. THE BONNEVILLE T120 BLACK – TIMELESS, CAPABLE, BEAUTIFUL
Significantly updated in 2021, the definitive British motorcycle icon takes its torque-rich 1200cc twin performance, sophisticated set up and beautiful Bonneville DNA to an all-new level, setting a new benchmark for timeless character and easy riding capability. With a significantly enhanced handling set-up, courtesy of a major 7kg weight saving over the previous generation, new lightweight aluminium wheel rims and new higher specification Brembo brakes, plus new rider technology, including cruise control and enhanced riding modes and an even more responsive throttle, the Bonneville legend continues.

Engine and performance
The engine of the T120 Black is Triumph’s signature 1200cc, high-torque British twin, which has been developed for an even better riding experience. The latest-generation T120’s engine mass has been reduced significantly through the use of a lighter crankshaft. Together with an optimised clutch and balancer shafts this has also reduced inertia, which provides the new generation with a notably more immediate and responsive throttle. The T120 has been specifically tuned to deliver high torque, from low down in the rev range all the way through the mid-range, giving exhilarating performance throughout.  The 1200 twin engine delivers 105 Nm of peak torque at a very low 3500 rpm and its power peaks 80 PS at 6,550 rpm. With its sensitively designed liquid cooling system, the engine exceeds EURO 5 requirements, giving lower emissions than the previous generation and excellent fuel economy.

The T120 Black comes with a very high service interval of 10,000 miles or 16,000 kilometres helping to keep the ongoing cost of ownership low.

Handling
The trademark confidence-inspiring ride of the T120 has been enhanced with a 7kg weight saving over the previous generation. The aluminium wheel rims (18’’ X 2.75’’ on the front and 17’’ X 4.25’’ on the rear) give a major reduction in unsprung weight and inertia, making the new T120 more agile and manoeuvrable when riding, and also when you’re moving the bike around at standstill.

The braking system has high specification Brembo front brakes, with a twin disc set-up and 2 piston sliding calipers giving excellent stopping power and improved feel. Safety and control have also been maximised thanks to Triumph’s latest generation ABS and switchable traction control.

The combination of weight saving, new wheels and higher specification brake set-up makes the latest-generation T120 the best handling Bonneville T120 ever.

Rider Technology
The Bonneville T120 Black comes high specification technology, with cruise control fitted as standard along with enhanced riding modes.

The cruise control is set via a dedicated button on the handlebar, making it extremely user friendly for the rider as well as the selection of the riding modes. The rider can select between the Rain and Road riding modes, which will adapt the behaviour of the bike to the riding conditions.

Other high spec rider focussed technology fitted as standard include a torque-assist clutch, which reduces rider fatigue in heavy traffic or on longer journeys, an engine immobiliser incorporated into the key, a handy under-seat USB charging socket and internal wiring ready to plug in the accessory fit heated grips.

The headlight incorporates a distinctive LED daytime running light, where market legislation permits, which makes it easier for the bike to seen by other road users.

Style
The unmistakeable Bonneville silhouette is enhanced by touches that blend the T120’s iconic style with Triumph’s latest premium features.

The twin clock set-up has a premium 3D dial face with Bonneville branding and traditional typeface and colours.  The multi-functional digital display provides the rider with all necessary information, such as riding mode settings, cruise control status, gear position indicator and much more, and it is all controlled through the intuitive and easily accessible scroll button mounted on the handlebar.

The iconic sculpted Bonneville tank with knee pads carries a 3-bar heritage chromed metal badge, adding a distinctive styling touch to the already unmistakeable T120 design.

The mean and moody Bonneville T120 Black features a host of premium blacked-out styling details and components, including wheel rims, grab rail, engine covers, mirrors, headlamp bezel, indicators, and exhaust.

And more than 100 genuine Triumph accessories are available for the T120 range, enabling riders to personalise their motorcycles.

Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR Review

Maja Kenney of Maja’s Motorcycle Adventures spends a week with the Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR with many thanks to Triumph Motorcycles UK

I must admit, the first impression of seeing the new Triumph Speed Triple 1200 RR online when it was launched last year didn’t impress me. The headlight and the front fairing just didn’t do it for me. Seeing that the launch was very track-focused left me even less interested as that’s not the kind of riding I do.

However, when asked if I’d like to test it for a few days I jumped at the chance. Who wouldn’t? I knew it was a fast, high-performance motorcycle and I was keen to see for myself just how justified all the hype around it was.

It was delivered to my house one February morning, the clouds were dark and hanging low and there was rain in the air. The roads were wet and I wasn’t keen to get out on the bike in such conditions. So we spent some time getting to know each other in the garage instead. Whilst the headlight and the front end still didn’t make me stare at it in awe, I sure was smitten by the rest of the bike.

The Crystal White colour is stunning and really works well with the contrasting black frame and carbon fibre components and I really like the shiny speckles added to the paintwork. It almost shimmers in a certain light, especially when a ray of sunshine broke through the cloud when I finally took it out.

Every detail on the bike is well designed. From the smart branding to the pegs and the single-sided swingarm, it all fits together pleasantly on the eye. After a while of having the bike in the garage and riding it, I even started to like the headlight and the fairing around it. I had to admit it’s grown on me.

The LED bright display is tucked under the front screen, it seems slightly on the small side (5”) but once you’re on the bike and riding, the display is well arranged and clear to see. I did spend some time figuring out how to display general information such as total miles on the bike. There are many buttons on each side of the handlebars so I spent some time getting familiar with them.

When I eventually went for a ride I felt a bit intimidated to start with. Partly because the tires fitted to the bike were Pirelli Supercorsas with hardly any grip, partly because of the very aggressive riding position and partly because it’s a 1200 cc sportsbike with 177 bhp which is way more than you need to legally ride on public roads.

The tyres worried me because this was February, the roads had several layers of grit and grease on them and I knew I had to be careful when leaning the bike into a corner.

So I gingerly set off, adjusting my brain to the new riding position. The clip-on handlebars are fairly comfortable and your knees are not exactly around your ears but it is still an aggressive riding position. The seat feels soft and squidgy to the touch but after 20 minutes of riding the bike I sure felt it in my back and my backside.

It didn’t help that I was wearing layers of clothing as the temperature hovered around 5 degrees Celsius and that made the sporty riding position a bit uncomfortable.

Still, I must admit, it put a huge smile on my face as soon as we had gotten comfortable with each other. For the first ride, I opted for a dual carriageway to Chester and a city bimble to meet a friend for lunch on the riverbank. The bike sat happily on the A55 cruising at 70 mph and even the wind wasn’t a problem. The cruise control helps keep the speed steady and it gives your wrist a break, too.

Once we hit the city traffic it rumbled patiently at the lights and stayed at the speed limit running smoothly. The quick shifter worked brilliantly even at low revs. It sure turned a few heads as I parked by the river and enjoyed a delicious lunch.

The bike is keyless and as I’m not used to this, it felt odd at first to walk away without having to remove the keys from the ignition. It took a bit of getting used to working out how to lock the steering. A few days later I spent a good few minutes trying to unlock the steering in a car park and get the engine started, much to the amusement of the elderly couple sitting in their car watching me.

Feeling happier and more confident on the bike, the next ride was a slightly more spirited on one of the wonderful winding roads of the less populated Welsh countryside. The good side of a mid-week February ride means there aren’t many cars around and definitely no bikes so the roads I wanted to ride were quiet. The bike sounds wonderful when you open the throttle and the quick shifter changes the gears up or down so smoothly. Riding into a corner is easy, the bike leans effortlessly and makes you feel faster than you actually are. Or at least that was the case for me.

With the roads greasy I kept the bike in the rain mode. There are 5 riding modes, rain, road, sport, track and rider. The bike is really light and low, too. It weighs less than 200 kg when fully filled up and I can reach the floor easily with my feet flat on the ground. All this means the bike is easy to manoeuvre when stationary, in the garage or when parking in an awkward space.

What a brilliant bike if you are looking for a spirited ride or a road legal track day toy so you can ride there and back, too. It turns heads everywhere you go and it’s a great conversation starter. A capable bike that can be sensible on the road, too. And if you are wondering, I have taken to that retro round headlight and fairing after being around it for over two weeks.

Triumph Motorcycles’ TE-1 Wins “Electric Motorbike of The Year”

Triumph Motorcycles’ TE-1 Wins “Electric Motorbike of The Year” AT GQ Car Awards.

Triumph Motorcycles’ prototype TE-1 has won the “Electric Motorbike of the Year” award at the 2023 GQ Car Awards.

Paul Henderson, one of the judges said: “With a 0–60mph time of 3.6 seconds, top speed of 135mph, a 100-mile range on a single charge, and a 0-to-80 per cent charge time of just 20 minutes, Triumph’s first fully electric prototype has exceeded all expectations to set new standards in the sector. Triumph says they have no plans to put the TE-1 into production, but the technological advances, battery development and electronic breakthroughs will all feature in the British motorcycle brand’s next gen (or should that be first gen) production EV. In other words, the best is yet to come.”

Steve Sargent, Chief Product Officer at Triumph Motorcycles, said: “We are delighted to have our efforts in developing an exciting, high performance electric motorcycle recognised at the GQ Car Awards. There are significant challenges in bringing electric motorcycles to the mass market, but the TE-1 is a crucial step towards Triumph’s development and understanding of electric vehicle technology.” The bike is a product of a unique collaboration between Triumph Motorcycles, Williams Advanced Engineering, Integral Powertrain Ltd, and WMG at the University of Warwick – and was funded by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles through Innovate UK. It was set up to serve as an educational tool to allow Triumph to research into potential future electric motorcycles. TE-1 underwent four phases in its two-year development, reaching completion in July 2022.

With a throttle action and torque delivery map directly engineered from a Speed Triple 1200 RS, the track testing and dynamic rider assessments of the TE-1 prototype demonstrator deliver a level of handling that matches Triumph’s current triple cylinder internal combustion sports performance motorcycles.

Daytona 200 champion racer Brandon Paasch participated in the final testing phase, both in engine performance evaluation and also with the final set-up of the prototype through track testing. “The throttle response on the TE-1 is kind of incredible, it’s very torquey and when you first touch the throttle it’s instant power, which is obviously what I love as a motorcycle racer – I love when it’s super-torquey and picks up right away, so for me it was a really great experience” said Brandon. “I got to peg this thing all the way from zero to 100% throttle and it’s unbelievably quick, it pulls like crazy.”

Brandon Paasch officially becomes part of Triumph’s Avenue of Legends

Brandon Paasch was honoured with a commemorative plaque on Triumph’s Avenue of Legends at its global HQ and Factory Visitor Experience, Hinckley, UK, to celebrate his fantastic Daytona 200 win.

On 12th March 2022 Brandon Paasch made Triumph history by taking an outstanding win at the Daytona 200 on board the Street Triple 765 RS for the TOBC Triumph racing team. The
incredible race culminated in a thrilling victory as he drafted the competition out of the very last corner to win by just .007 seconds.

This victory represented the very first Daytona 200 win for the Street Triple 765, and once again proved the performance and reliability credentials of Triumph’s class leading sports performance middleweight, which, combined with Brandon’s outstanding skills, contributed to writing another chapter of Triumph’s iconic Daytona racing history.

This milestone is now immortalised on Triumph’s Avenue of Legends, which can be walked by every visitor to the Triumph Factory Visitor Experience.

Brandon Paasch – 2022 Daytona 200 Winner: “I am super pumped to have won the Daytona 200 for a second time, back-to-back. It’s very special for me as it’s a very short list of legendary riders who have accomplished that. Now I am aiming to become the only rider to do it three times in a row. I am very thankful to Triumph for accepting me into their Avenue of Legends. I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done for me these past two years, and I hope to have a long lasting relationship with the Triumph brand.”

Steve Sargent – Triumph Chief Product Officer: “The Avenue of Legends is a mark of respect to those inspirational people who have pushed the boundaries to help make Triumph the brand it is today, and we are delighted to welcome Brandon Paasch to that exclusive group. With his sensational win at the Daytona 200, the race after which the Triumph Daytona can trace its roots back to 1966, sealing a last corner victory by just 0.007 seconds truly earns him the Legend title”

BREITLING TOP TIME TRIUMPH CHRONOGRAPHS

BEAUTIFUL

  • An eye-catching ice-blue dial references both the Speed Twin’s Polychromatic Blue and a rare, blue-dialed Breitling Top Time from the 1970s.

PREMIUM

  • A high-precision chronograph for reading time, timekeeping and tracking speed. The movement is a COSC-certified chronometer, the marker of superior accuracy.

  • Two distinct versions of the Top Time Triumph chronograph released, with one reserved for Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition owners and individually numbered to match the edition number of the bike.
Breitling Top Time Triumph

Stylish design detailing

In the mid-1960s, inspired by motor-racing and café-racer culture, Willy Breitling set out to capture the speed-driven style of the day with a completely new take on the timekeeper. The result was the Breitling Top Time, an unconventional chronograph that quickly became the watch of choice for a sporty in-crowd of men and women equally drawn to the watch’s bold proportions.

Today that spirit is back in two distinct versions of the Top Time Triumph chronograph, with one reserved specifically for those who purchase a Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition. The core-collection version features an opalescent, vertically brushed dial. The owners-only version has a radiant sunray-finished dial. Speed Twin owners who place their watch order with Triumph by August 22, 2022, will have the privileged opportunity to obtain this made-to-order watch engraved with the number of their bike.

The highlight of both watch versions is the ice blue of their dials. This unique colour has, as references, both the Polychromatic Blue Triumph Thunderbird 6T from 1951 and a rare, blue-dialled Breitling Top Time Ref. 815 from the 1970s.

Breitling Top Time Triumph

Features include a subdued racing-themed calfskin leather strap that lets the hero dial shine. Breitling and Triumph logos sit subtly at 12 and 6 o’clock. Oversized mushroom pushers allow for easy control over the chronograph’s stop-start and reset functions, and a high-contrast tachymeter scale provides clear legibility of speed readings. The watches are powered by the Breitling Caliber 23, a COSC-certified chronometer with a power reserve of approximately 48 hours.

Another feature collectors will love: The watches’ casebacks are etched with a detailed design sketch of the iconic Triumph parallel twin engine. The positioning of this sketch is very deliberate. It demonstrates the deep layering of details on the motorcycles themselves, some of it only apparent to those who have the close association of ownership or a deep knowledge of the original motorcycles.

THE NEW 2021 SPEED TWIN
AN EVOLUTION IN EVERY DIMENSION

Launched in 2018, the Speed Twin set the benchmark for how a Modern Classic performance roadster should ride and feel thanks to its class-leading handling, thrilling and responsive engine, advanced rider technology and beautiful, modern custom style with category-defining premium finish and detailing.

An award-winning motorcycle, the Speed Twin has been a great success and a customer favourite. Recognised for having the power and torque of the Thruxton R in an even more accessible set up, the Speed Twin delivered the contemporary custom style and engaged ride of the Street Twin, with even more premium and beautiful details and touches.

And now the latest generation Speed Twin, significantly updated in 2021, delivers an evolution in every dimension, from power and performance, to handling, technology and style – making it the perfect combination of character, style and genuine sport performance.

High Performance

Significantly updated in 2021, the Speed Twin’s characterful 1200cc High Power Bonneville twin engine brings higher performance, as well as lower emissions, making it fully Euro 5 compliant. The engine now delivers 3PS more peak power with 100PS at 7,250rpm, plus more power in the mid-range than the previous generation.

Alongside the incredibly strong and linear power delivery, the 2021 Speed Twin also has a fuller torque curve, with peak torque of 112Nm arriving more than 500rpm lower down the rev range compared to the previous generation.

The responsiveness of the Speed Twin engine has also been enhanced vrs the previous generation, thanks to a 17% reduction in inertia obtained via a new lightweight crankshaft and alternator. These enable the engine to spin up faster than the previous generation, and rev harder for longer, with a red line now 500rpm higher than before. In addition, new high compression pistons, revised ports and a new cam profile complete the list of performance enhancements.

The distinctive sound of the Bonneville Twin is amplified by the new brushed stainless steel megaphone twin upswept sports silencers, that have been carefully crafted for a deep, throaty roar to match the Speed Twin’s legendary name. The innovative and uninterrupted exhaust header run cleverly conceals the catalyst box, delivering the characteristic clean-line “straight-run” design.

As with all models in Triumph’s Modern Classic range, the cost of ownership is kept low thanks to the high first major service interval of 10,000 miles / 16,000 kilometres.

Class leading Handling

Already acknowledged for its superb, sure-footed comfortable handling, the new generation Speed Twin benefits from a number of significant upgrades for an even more precise, agile and dynamic ride.

New for 2021, the Speed Twin comes equipped with higher specification upside down 43mm Marzocchi front forks with cartridge damping, bringing a more confidence-inspiring and comfortable ride with 120mm wheel travel. With the addition of higher specification fully adjustable Öhlins piggy-back twin rear suspension units with gloss black springs 2022 Speed Twin Breitling Limited Edition comes delivers an even more precise and comfortable ride.

Further enhancing the new generation Speed Twin, braking performance is improved with new higher specification Brembo 4-piston M50 radial monobloc front brake calipers and twin 320mm Brembo discs. Alongside the Nissin 2-piston floating rear caliper with 220mm disc, and ABS fitted as standard, these deliver a stronger initial braking-bite, more feel and better fade characteristics.

Ensuring incredible grip, precision and high-speed stability, new Metzeler Racetec RR tyres are fitted as standard for the 2021 model, along with new cast aluminium wheels, 17” on both front and rear, with a lightweight 12-spoke design.

A beautifully balanced motorcycle, the Speed Twin brings an intuitive and confidence-inspiring ride. The ergonomics are perfectly proportioned with an accessible 809mm seat height, a slim stand over width, tapered handlebars and a comfortable roadster foot-peg position, which are 38mm further forward and 4mm lower than the Thruxton, providing the rider with a more relaxed riding position.

Enhanced Technology

The new generation Speed Twin is packed with rider-focused technology, including a sophisticated ride-by-wire system that ensures precise throttle control and enables three riding modes: Rain, Road and Sport. These have been enhanced for 2021, adjusting both the throttle response and traction control settings to suit the rider’s preference. The riding modes can be changed at the touch of a button while on the move, to respond to any change in riding conditions, maximising rider confidence and safety. The rider can also choose to switch the traction control off independently through the instrument menu.

The bike is also equipped with an LED rear light and indicators, and, where market legislation permits, the signature LED Daytime Running Light (DRL) is incorporated into
the headlight.

The contemporary 3D clocks incorporate a digital menu system accessed by the scroll button mounted on the handlebar. This provides the rider will all of the key information, including gear position, two trip settings, fuel level and range-to-empty, as well an average and current fuel consumption, access to traction control settings and TPMS indicator if fitted as an accessory.

Other rider focused technology includes an under-seat USB charging socket, an accessory Tyre Pressure Monitoring System and an immobiliser with transponder integrated into the premium Triumph branded key.

More Premium Style and Detailing

Incorporating Triumph’s timeless DNA with a contemporary stripped-back custom style
and poise, the new 2021 Speed Twin is even more beautiful and now comes with even
more stylish details.

In addition to the new 12 spoke cast wheels and twin upswept sporty silencers with brushed stainless-steel headers, the Speed Twin is characterised by its signature-shaped 14.5L tank with knee indents, beautiful bar end mirrors, sculpted side panels and stylish bench seat.

Premium details and finishes are harmonised across the bike, including brushed aluminium front and rear mudguards with new mounts, plus brushed aluminium side panel finishers and heel guards. Additional premium touches and details can be found in the new anodised headlamp mounts to compliment the painted headlamp bowl, classic Monza fuel cap and clear anodised aluminium swingarm.

The Genesis of a Motorcycle Icon

Changing the face of motorcycling, the original 1938 Triumph Speed Twin, with the world’s first successful parallel twin engine packaged into a game changing chassis, was a revelation to ride. Its smooth dynamic handling and superb responsive feel established Triumph as the number one motorcycle marque globally for performance and handling, setting the template for all that followed, and earning a global reputation for being the first real ‘riders’ bike’.

The new Speed Twin sets the benchmark all over again for its balance of torque-rich performance, agile and dynamic handling, and stunning contemporary custom motorcycle design and character.

“It has been truly exciting to see the progress made during phase 3 of Project Triumph TE‑1 with the final prototype motorcycle now going into real life testing. Everyone involved at Triumph are proud to have been part of this innovative British collaboration. Personally, I am thrilled with the results we have already achieved with our partners, and the exciting preview of the potential electric future to come.” said Nick Bloor, Triumph CEO. “We look forward to continuing the ambitious and innovative work on the TE-1 demonstrator prototype through the live testing phase and sharing the outcome with Triumph fans across the world.”

PROJECT TE-1 – PHASE 3 OUTCOMES
Demonstrator Prototype
Triumph Motorcycles
The Triumph TE-1 team began phase 3 by successfully building an initial mule bike which incorporated the battery, inverter, motor, and chassis into one machine for the first time. Using this platform, all of the project partners worked collaboratively to optimise software integration across the complex systems, involving hundreds of hours of detailed testing to ensure the functionality of all the features and software aspects behave accurately and intuitively, as a customer would expect. This was validated in real life simulation work carried out at WMG, involving detailed powertrain rig testing and simulations to assess safety critical items relating to motor function and vehicle control. Durability testing on the primary transmission has also been conducted to ensure a full understanding of the fundamental differences in electric motor load application for vehicle use cases, efficiency, and consequences to gear life. Alongside this work, the Triumph-led design of the bespoke chassis has focused on delivering the phase 2 styling intent as closely as possible. Phase 3 of the project is now complete with the fully assembled TE-1 demonstrator prototype, the photographs of which are revealed for the first time today.

Steve Sargent, Triumph’s Chief Product Officer said “During phase 3 we have focused on building the physical foundation of Triumph’s first electric prototype motorcycle. I am pleased with the outcome of Triumph and the TE-1 partners’ efforts in creating a demonstrator bike that is not only visually so desirable with clear Triumph DNA, but also packaged with an exhilarating and thrilling brand-new electric powertrain that has such potential for the future. I look forward to continuing the development of this demonstrator vehicle through phase 4 and using our knowledge and capabilities to bring all of the partners’ cutting-edge technology together into a final result which will guide Triumph’s electric strategy for the future. Our experience tells us that at this stage of a project there is no substitute to genuinely riding a bike when developing driveability, handling and character, and we have ambitious targets focused on delivering a riding experience that is new and exciting, but ultimately intuitive and familiar. I am really looking forward to my first opportunity to ride the completed prototype.”

Williams Advanced Engineering (WAE)
Following completion of Phase 2 of the programme in March 2021, which delivered a fully bench tested battery, Williams Advanced Engineering have now concluded work on Phase 3 which contained some critical gateways for the project.

In addition to supporting a number of hardware and software solutions; specifically integrating Triumph’s motorcycle control software to work in harmony with WAE’s controller and battery management system, the team have enhanced the integration of the mechanical and electrical solutions; optimising battery layout to balance mass and positioning within the chassis.

The demonstrator bike is now undergoing final battery level validation and calibration to ensure the performance results meet best-in-class power and energy density targets and for the rider, ensuring there is no compromise in performance at low levels of charge.

“Following an extended period of testing, we are thrilled to finally see the results of our work on a physical bike. By working with the team at Triumph, we have continued to push the boundaries of battery technology, keeping the rider in mind at all times” said Dyrr Ardash, Head of Strategic Partnerships, Williams Advanced Engineering “Because we have designed the battery from the ground-up, design has not been compromised and we have been able to push the boundaries of current technology, offering both performance and all important, range”.

Integral Powertrain Ltd.’s e-Drive Division
“We are absolutely delighted to complete our part in this project and deliver what we set out to achieve which is a scalable, ultra-highly integrated motor and inverter, with no phase cables, busbars, or separate cooling circuits. For the TE-1 application, the motor achieves peak and continuous power densities of 13 kW/kg and 9 kW/kg respectively which is 60% higher than new APC technology roadmap targets for 2025. All of this has been achieved using materials and processes compatible with volume automotive production and importantly using a length scalable motor platform.

“The inverter concept, which is also scalable by tuning the number of Silicon-Carbide power stages for different diameter motors, has really delivered on performance. The TE-1 unit is capable of >500kW! This gives us the opportunity to optimise this platform for production.

“The integrated motor and inverter unit is now on the bike and is delivering on the target performance and cycle efficiency we engineered, modelled and simulated to achieve. We’re very much looking forward the feedback from bike-level testing and the benefits of our high efficiency on range.

“We’re really proud to have been a key part of this exciting project which has been a landmark for electric motorcycles and British industry.” Andrew Cross, Chief Technical Officer at Integral Powertrain Ltd.

WMG, University of Warwick
“WMG have been working closely with Triumph to support the development of the motorcycle control unit via a comprehensive real-time evaluation process using two bespoke physical rigs. A 3D physical motorcycle model has been created and integrated with the first rig to allow the evaluation and refinement of the control unit under real-world driving scenarios, ensuring it behaves well before the integration into the initial prototype bike. The second rig has been utilised to support Triumph in evaluating the power and energy performance of the whole drivetrain as well as confirming its durability. We have also focused on control research and development at other levels, including advanced traction control and optimal brake blending strategies. The findings in energy system modelling, simulation and control, especially real-world case studies with electric motorcycles, gained through this TE-1 project have been utilised to develop teaching materials on energy systems, hybridisation and electrification technologies across education programmes at WMG.” Truong Quang Dinh, Associate Professor of Energy System Management and Control at WMG, University of Warwick.

“WMG have also been helping Triumph understand the opportunities and wider implications of electrification towards their business. This has included investigating the opportunities for electric two-wheeler charging networks, the need for domestic electric motorcycle recycling, the necessity to develop local battery supply chains and the direction that Triumph will need to take to ensure that they can design, develop, manufacture and distribute electric two-wheeled vehicles in the future. The findings from these studies are also providing direction to national and local governments, specifically around areas where policy intervention can support electric motorcycle adoption.

“In many studies undertaken by WMG, bespoke computer-based models developed at the university (such as the university’s own UniWarp software), have been instrumental in understanding the best possible direction or action required for different scenarios. This approach has enabled WMG to quantify the environmental impact of electric motorcycles and has defined methods by which this can be further improved through new vehicle features, vehicle system sizing or new external collaborations.” Jim Hooper, Principal Engineer of Electric Vehicle Projects at WMG, University of Warwick.

Female Motorcyclists Set To Break World Record With Triumph Motorcycles

Moto Advisor, a Facebook group for UK motorcyclists, is attempting to beat the existing record for the world’s largest female biker meet.

Taking place on 24th July 2022, the world record attempt will be held at the Triumph Factory Visitor Experience in Hinckley, Leicestershire, the global headquarters of Triumph Motorcycles.

Nimi Patel, keen motorcyclist and co-founder of Moto Advisor, initially founded a group called South East Link Up, as the group quickly grew popular amongst the online female biking community, Nimi was curious to see how many female bikers could gather together on a larger scale.

In 2015, Nimi and fellow motorcyclist Sherrie Woolf achieved a world record for largest number of all-female riders at a single bike meet. The event took place at the iconic biker’s hang-out, The Ace Café, London, where 618 female riders gathered to break the record. In following years, record attempts have been made globally in Australia and the USA, however the current record still remains in the UK with 1,132 female riders who met at single bike meet in Shropshire in 2017.

The initiative aims to bring women together as a growing target for the motorcycle industry, with the goal of encouraging the development of a wider range of products suitable for female riders and to inspire others to live their passion.

Sherrie Woolf, Moto Advisor, said: “We are keen to show the motorcycle industry that the female market is financially worthwhile catering to. There are over 300,000 female motorcycle licence holders in the UK alone. We also want to encourage and support more women to enjoy riding and get involved in all aspects of biking; from road riding, track days, off-roading, rallies, stunting, touring and anything else that is possible on two-wheels. The social aspect and kinship of the biking community is special, whether male or female, turning up to an event alone, you are guaranteed to leave with lots of new friends.”

Annually in the UK there are 4,900 theory test passes and 3,100 module two test passes and the number of female motorcyclists is set to constantly increase. The average age of women passing their test has fallen, with the largest pass rate currently being within the 21 – 39 age brackets, which shows that a new generation of females are being introduced to the world of motorcycling (data shared by MCIA).

In addition to the impressive world record attempt, the Hinkley-based event will include live music, clothing and apparel stands, refreshments and a raffle; the proceeds of which will be donated to the local Air Ambulance Service and Blood Bikers.

Moto Advisor together with Triumph Motorcycles are looking forward to welcoming thousands of female riders to the Triumph Factory Visitor Experience to attempt a new world record.
