The New Knox Urbane Pro MK3

NO JACKET REQUIRED

Designed to be worn on its own with No Jacket Required, the Urbane Pro Mk3 is the ultimate impact and abrasion resistant motorcycle armoured shirt.

A Class AA CE approved protective garment for all riders, no matter what motorcycle or terrain they ride.

Worn close to the body, the armour won’t move around so it’s always where you need it, when you need it. The most versatile, lightweight, breathable and comfortable armoured shirt for riding in the heat. When the weather turns cold or wet, simply add Knox Seasonless Layers so you can continue to use it all year round.

The Mk3 has even more performance and is packed with extra features and pockets. It is fitted with thinner, lighter and more flexible Level 2 Micro-Lock Compact in the back, shoulders and elbows.

CE approved as a standalone “Class AA” garment with approved abrasion resistance built in, meaning an outer shell is no longer necessary unless you want to wear one.

The MK3 design aesthetic has been refined but the abrasion resistance, superior stretch comfort, light weight and breathability remain intact. The pocket layout has practical zipped pockets on the front with a visor wipe and an internal chest phone pocket, with additional pocket for storing ear plugs. Improved internal pocket options. The neck and cuffs have a new soft, comfortable binding. A front placket with embossed branding for an extra feel of luxury and comfort on the neck. New innovative reflective piping and security belt loops.

In changing weather conditions just add warm or waterproof layers, knowing that the Urbane Pro Mk3 is still the CORE abrasion and armour layer beneath. The Urbane Pro Mk3 has been designed to work seamlessly with all styles in the Knox Seasonless Collection.

Also Available as the Urbane Pro Utility Mk3. For those adventurous riders who go further and want more storage, the Mk3 Utility is the correct choice with 5 exterior utility-style pockets and 2 inner pockets.

Available in Mens and Womens Styles.

The Urbane Pro Mk3 is Part of the Knox Seasonless Collection.

The Knox Seasonless collection is about forgetting the rules of seasonal clothing. The seasonless collection can be used at any time of year and riders can add more or less layers as they need them or mix them however, they want.

Start with core protection and add or subtract layers to adapt and overcome all conditions, from unbearable heat through to driving rain. There is no spring/summer/autumn/winter wear, this is adaption to climate and condition via seasonless equipment. Equipment that is designed to work perfectly together, as one or separately giving them year-round ability.

Jump on track with Furygan

Having the right equipment and accessories for riding on track is of vital importance, with safety, comfort and – of course – looks all priorities. French motorcycle protection specialist Furygan has developed their racing range with learnings taken from racers, including their MotoGP rider Johann Zarco and Isle of Man TT legend Michael Dunlop, to provide all track riders with kit of the highest level that utilises innovative technologies.

Overtake
The result of three years of research dedicated to finding the perfect ergonomics for on track riding, the Overtake suit utilises the same elements as developed by Furygan’s MotoGP and WorldSBK riders.

Developed in Furygan’s racing department in Nîmes, France, this top-of-the-range suit boasts a new aerodynamic speed hump to optimise drag and comfort in the ‘speed’ position, that will make sure that you feel the true benefit when tucked in on the bike. Comfort is guaranteed with neoprene inserts at the collar and on the wrists, the use of morpho stretch panels and selected perforated areas to maintain excellent air circulation. With high speed there is inherently more risk involved, but safety is taken care of with Kevlar© reinforcements at the hips, seat and forearms, D3O© shoulder and elbow protectors, triple stitching, chest protector pockets and the Overtake is compatible with the Furygan Airbag Vest.

The Overtake is available in three colour options (Black/Red/White, Black/White & Black/Blue/White) and in sizes 46/36-58/48, with an RRP of £999.99.

Styg20 x Kevlar©
As used and tested by Johann Zarco, these gloves underwent 18 months of development in Furygan’s racing department and six months of testing in race conditions.

Built to be the best and used by the very best, the Styg20 x Kevlar© come pre-shaped to ensure they are in the optimum shape for racing and feature the AFS ventilation system to ensure hands don’t get sweaty on warmer days. Alongside the metacarpal protectors and Kevlar© reinforcements, the design of these gloves take every eventuality on track into consideration; palm sliders to reduce the risk of scaphoid fractures, anti-separation links on the final two fingers, finger stitch seams on the outside to enhance comfort, a grip insert to increase feeling of the bars and an elastic cuff adjustment system to provide a tailored fit.

With an RRP of £199.99, the Styg20 x Kevlar© gloves come in sizes S-3XL and are available in four colourways: Black/White/Red, Black/FluoYellow/White, Black/White & White/Black.

Knee Slider

Often, increases in performance can be down to the tiniest of details, which is why Furygan is as serious about their knee sliders as they are their racing suits and gloves.

Developed in Furygan’s racing department for their Moto3 riders, this updated design has resulted in a weight saving of 11%. No compromises have been made though, with great care taken to choose materials that maintain a good feeling with the track but don’t reduce their durability.

Available in either Black/White or Black, the RRP for a pair of knee sliders is £42.99.

D3O© Racing Back Protector
The new Furygan D3O© Racing Back Protector offers maximum safety without compromising comfort and is assembled using three different materials, to ensure it offers the highest level of durability and protection possible.

Made using D3O© molecules that lock upon impact, the back protector is light and comfortable to wear, with adjustable and removeable shoulder and chest straps, but will provide the highest level of protection – exceeding the performance requirements of EN1621-2 (level 2). It also utilises D3O© Airwave Technology to help channel heat emitted by the body to the outside.

With three sizes available – 7, 8 or 9 – the D3O© Racing Back Protector has an RRP of £134.99.

Chest Racing D3O©
The high performance and ergonomic Chest Racing D3O© is used by Furygan racers worldwide and has been designed with both performance and comfort in mind.

Like the back protector, the Chest Racing D3O© helps keep riders cool with D3O© Airwave Technology and is certified as exceeding the performance requirements of EN1621-3 (level 2). Made using D3O© molecules that lock upon impact, it also features a removable central polyurethane shield and has an extended protection zone that covers the chest and ribs.

The RRP for the Chest Racing D3O© is £85.99 and is available in one size only.

Zapp Reveals Production Version Of i300 Carbon Launch Edition

Zapp Electric Vehicles Limited (“Zapp” or the “Company”), a UK-based high-performance two-wheel electric vehicle company, today revealed the production version of its limited-run i300 Carbon Launch Edition.

The i300 Carbon Launch Edition is designed and built with premium specifications, featuring unique carbon fibre fender, diamond cut wheels, a red rear spring, carbon hard carrier and a commemorative plaque with the founder’s signature. Just 1,000 units will be built.

Today also sees the launch of the new Zapp e-commerce website (www.zappev.com) which features a high-definition 3D configurator for customers to explore and build the i300, as well as order their bike.

In combination with Zapp’s boutique-style Paris flagship store, the new website marks the rollout of Zapp’s innovative drop-ship-direct-to-customer (DSDTC) sales model, which offers customers more control over how they build and order their i300, online or in-store. A “Zapper”, a franchised and trained technician, in a Zapper van will deliver and service Zapp vehicles at the location of the customer’s choice.

Swin Chatsuwan, founder and CEO of Zapp, said: “We are incredibly proud of the i300 Carbon Launch Edition. It is our expression of performance and style. With the launch of the new Zapp website, we are upholding our philosophy to make Zapp vehicles ‘easy to buy and easy to own.’ Zapp’s boutiques are relaxed places where customers can discover the product and ownership experiences in a friendly, informative, no-haggling environment. Equally, our new configurator and website have been built on simplicity and transparency for the customer.”

The Paris store is the first of a global network of Zapp stores which will offer customers the opportunity to test ride the i300 , as well as to learn about the product.

As an antidote to the traditional automotive showroom model, Zapp experts will be on hand to introduce the i300 and all of its features and guide the customer through the online configuration and ordering process.

If a customer prefers to order online without visiting a store, they can do so on www.zappev.com. This offers price transparency and freedom of choice across the sales journey.

The DSDTC model has been designed to uphold Zapp’s core philosophy of ensuring its vehicles are ‘easy to buy and easy to own’. Every customer will have their i300 delivered to an address of their choice. The bike will be delivered in a Zapper van by a trained Zapper, who will provide a complete handover of the i300.

Any servicing of the i300 will also be performed on-site at a location of the customer’s choice – whether at home, an office or somewhere else – by a Zapper in a Zapper van.

The Zapp i300 electric performance city bike is built around an exoskeleton architecture and powered by an advanced electric motor, enabling it to match the acceleration of high-performance motorcycles in a step-through architecture. The i300’s interior permanent magnet electric motor and carbon fibre belt drive combine to drive acceleration from 0 to 30 mph (48km/h) in just 2.3 seconds and from 0 to 50 mph (97km/h) in 5.0 seconds.

Mallory Bike Bonanza replaces Festival of 1000 Bikes

This year’s Mallory Park Bike Bonanza, in association with Lexelle and Mackenzie Hodgson Insurance, on July 15/16, replaces what was known as the Festival of 1000 Bikes as the premier event at the Leicestershire racing circuit.

The action-packed weekend, organised by the circuit’s management team Real Motorsport Limited, promises an array of interesting bikes and sidecar outfits that can be seen taking to the track in parades throughout the weekend. Saturday is all about road machines, whilst Sunday focuses on road and race machines, and the highly anticipated Mallory Masters parade.

Mallory Park boss Stuart Hicken said: “When the VMCC decided against promoting the Festival of 1000 Bikes at Mallory for this year, we felt the best option for us and our customers, was to turn our own Bike Bonanza into a premier event that we can develop and promote not just this year, but for the foreseeable future.”

The 1.35-mile circuit, nestled within the heart of the Leicestershire countryside, will host the ‘Mallory Masters, parades for racing stars past and present, including Niall and Tarran Mackenzie, Michael Dunlop, Michael Rutter, John Cooper, who will be descending on the venue which is often dubbed the ‘Friendly Circuit’ for this not-to-be-missed family event.

Away from the tarmac track there will be some 50 Owners’ Club stands, trade stands, an autojumble, national championship dirt track racing presented by the Dirt Track Riders Association, a Pre-65 Trial, a display of military vehicles and much more.

Live music on Friday and Saturday evening will take guests from a wonderful day of race action into an evening of entertainment for all the family.

Pre-season Battery Checks

Has your motorcycle been sitting in the garage or under a cover all winter long?

Batteries lose power over time, but with a few basic checks and a bit of maintenance you can make sure your bike starts on the button whenever you need it. We asked the battery saving experts at OptiMate for their top tips.

Your first job is to figure out the type of battery fitted to your motorcycle – is it Lead Acid (old school), Maintenance Free / AGM (common on most modern machines) or Lithium (becoming increasingly popular on high performance and off-road bikes). Here’s how to tell the difference.

Lead Acid
Conventional Lead Acid batteries will usually be labelled with reference numbers starting with the letters YB, CB or GB (e.g YB14L-A2); Y, C or G (e.g Y60-N24L-A); or 12N (e.g 12N24-3)

They usually have a black top with a row of plastic stoppers (three stoppers in a 6 volt battery and six in a 12 Volt). Inside are lead plates, surrounded by electrolyte mixture (the acid). This needs topping up with distilled water from time to time, so the stoppers can be removed to give access.

Maintenance Free / AGM
Maintenance Free or AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries are the most common type used in modern motorcycles, and normally have reference numbers starting with the letters YTX, CTX or GTX (e.g YTX9-BS).

They usually have a black case and have a stopper sunk into the top. Once filled, these batteries do not need to have the top removed, the acid level checked or be topped up. The electrolyte is suspended in fibreglass mats between the lead plates inside, hence the name.

Lithium Ion
Lithium Ion is the general group name used for all Lithium batteries. There are many different types – Lithium Iron Phosphate, also known as Lithium Ferrous Phosphate, is used for engine starter batteries. These will generally be marked as ‘Li-ion’, ‘LFP’ or ‘LiFePO4’.

Like Sealed/AGM batteries, Lithium Ion batteries usually have a black case, but have no stoppers in the top.

Check the condition of your battery
Multimeters can seem intimidating, but testing your bike’s Voltage with one is super simple, and they are a useful tool that costs little to buy.

With the ignition off, set the multimeter to the ‘20V DC’ (direct current) range. Connect or touch the red probe/clip to it to the positive terminal of your battery and the black one to the negative terminal.

If you’ve done it right, the Voltage should now be displayed on the meter’s screen.

A healthy 12V battery should give a reading between 12.5V and 12.9V. A conventional Lead-Acid should read 12.4V to 12.6V;  a Maintenance Free/AGM should be 12.7V to 12.9V; and a Lithium battery will normally be either 12.8V or 13.2V.

Next, start the engine and rev to between 3,000–4,000 rpm. This will indicate the voltage being put out by the alternator – an ideal charging range is between 14V to 14.5V, but down to 13.5V is acceptable.

If you have a lithium battery, your machine’s charging system should be putting out the safe charging rate of 14.4V. If it’s putting out more than that, there could be a problem.

If the reading is too high the voltage regulator could be faulty, which will cause the battery to overheat and fail.

If the reading is too low, the alternator is not generating sufficient current to recharge the battery – again another indication that there is a fault.

To make life easy, the OptiMate TS120 plug-and-play tester uses simple icons to indicate that everything is OK, or to highlight potential problems.

Attach a suitable OptiMate optimiser to your battery and it will test, check and assess your battery’s condition – again, using an easy-to-understand display to keep the user infomed – charging, repairing and even recovering deep discharged units automatically and safely.

Charging and maintaining
Regularly charging and maintaining your battery not only keeps it working to maximum capacity, it can also double its working life, as well as significantly reducing the likelihood of it failing.

There are many smart chargers on the market, which are designed to be attached to your motorcycle’s battery whenever it is parked up for long periods of time (more than a few days). These should not be confused with simple ‘trickle chargers’ which charge a battery slowly and then stop charging once a certain voltage is reached. Trickle chargers aren’t designed to be attached to batteries for long periods of time and won’t maintain a battery in the same way as a smart charger.

Recommended by most major motorcycle manufacturers, OptiMate chargers and optimisers can maintain, test, charge and even repair a bike’s battery, all completely automatically.

All OptiMate chargers run a unique ‘connect and forget’ 24hr, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year program, so they can and should be connected to your bike’s battery and left to do their work – no user input needed.

OptiMate Bronze series chargers automatically detect whether the battery is AGM or Lithium and charge accordingly – no need to pre-select or remove the battery from the bike – and will be suitable for the majority of modern bikes..

Mushman 125cc and 250cc, Rugged. Refined. Ready For Adventure

The Mushman is a scrambler take on the classic Mutt twin-shock bike, kitted out with all new upgrades; starting at the front, there’s the classic 18″ wheel with deep tread knobbly tyres, topped off with a stainless fork brace and an all-new high-rise mudguard mounted on an a combined aluminium headlight and fender mount.

Keeping the front end clean and uncluttered, the Mushman features a new bottom-mount LED headlight along with CNC fork-mounted indicator brackets, giving the pointy end a fresh new look.

But that’s not all, folks. Mutt is all about burly bikes, and the Mushman is no exception. The 15-litre tank and chunkier-than-ever tank pads make it stand out from the pack.

You’ll notice more new additions not found on any other Mutt bikes; not only does it come with matt black engine bars, but also has a beautifully crafted leather and steel tank rack. Both are currently exclusive to the Mushman and come as standard with no additional cost.

The Mushman is the perfect blend of classic and modern. The refined utility of the Mushman is one that not only captures attention, it demands it. Whether you’re cruising through the city streets or tearing up the countryside, the Mushman has your back.

Who better to give the ultimate insider perspective on the Mushman than Mutt co-founder Benny Thomas – Product Director and leader of development. With his unparalleled expertise and vision, no one is better suited to give you the low-down on this new release:

“The inspiration for the styling of the Mushman came from the idea of early scramblers. The simple practice of preparing a road bike for use off road by taking the bulky bits off, fitting knobbly tyres and high-rise mudguards to create a stripped-down bike that does exactly what it says on the box.”

While the Mushman was never intended to be a scrambler, it has the look and the feel of something Mr McQueen would ride between shoots if he was around in 2023.

It’s the ultimate hack-around bike. Lightweight, good looking and perfect for taking on the city or hitting the country lanes.

‘Nothing Fancy’ is the motto for all our Mutts, and I wanted to keep the Mushman simple and classy, but add some fresh new bits and pieces such as the engine bars, tank strap & rack, all-new adjustable CNC levers, and LED indicators and headlamp.”

The Mushman is now available to pre-order, with the 125cc priced at £3,750 + OTR and 250cc priced at £4,600 + OTR. The Titanium Grey models will hit the streets in early March, followed closely by the highly sought-after Limited-Edition Matt Green.

All model variants can be ordered either directly from Mutt Motorcycles or via their network of dealers worldwide.

MUTT MOTORCYCLES – BACKGROUND
BORN IN BIRMINGHAM. FORGED OUT OF PASSION AND OBSESSION.

Born in Birmingham, the historic home of motorcycle manufacture and the birthplace of heavy metal, Mutt Motorcycles was forged out of a passion for motorcycles and an obsession with custom bikes and the custom bike scene. Deeply embedded in custom culture, with many years spent building high-end, one-off customs, founders Benny Thomas and Will Rigg understood that the size, expense, and hassle of finding these bikes made it tough to get into the way of life they loved.

They set their vision – to make motorcycling as accessible as possible without compromising quality or style. The mission was to create a bike that was easy to ride and maintain, affordable to buy and run, yet with the same feel, sound, and attention to detail as a true custom machine. With their experience, they knew they could create something riders could get straight on but with the classic style, strength, and vibe of an authentic custom-built bike.

Applying their tried-and-tested custom-build approach and style to small cc machines, they created a bike with a unique blend of contemporary design and custom heritage. A bike that would encourage more people to get on two wheels and experience the same freedom and escape that only riding a motorcycle gives you.

The connection to the industrial past and the creative legacy of their home city forged their identity and provided the inspiration for the first Mutt bikes. Combining classic style, solid build and power, and a heavy metal sound, they built a one-of-a-kind bike you just had to get your hands on and ride into the sunset. And so, the Mutt was born.

Since those original beginnings, they have continued to expand their range of small-batch, small cc bikes alongside welcoming ever more riders into their growing global fraternity. Staying true to their roots, they still pride themselves on ensuring every bike that goes out of their workshops gets the same attention to detail as the full-on, high-end customs they’ve built over the years.

Touratech Defensa hand protectors in black

The ultra-robust Touratech Defensa hand protector enters the stage with a new design variant in rich black.

The Defensa Black underlines the brawny look of many current adventure bikes.

With the Defensa, Touratech has opened a new chapter in the field of hand protectors. The two-piece bar, forged from a high-strength aluminium alloy, defies even the toughest stress. The rider’s hands and the handlebar fittings are just as excellently protected during sporty off-road use as they are on demanding expeditions.

What’s more, the Defensa is extremely versatile: while sporty adventure riders simply mount the light metal bar of the “Pure” version, adventure riders upgrade their protectors for mixed use with the extremely effective handguards to the Defensa “Expedition” version. Those who require even more wind protection can extend the protectors with the optionally available “Extension” spoilers.

And last but not least, unlike virtually all other hand protectors available on the market, the Touratech Defensa is manufactured specifically for each model. This means that the aluminium bar sits absolutely precisely and offers the levers exactly the space they require.
The Defensa is now also available in rich black. In this attractive design, the two components of the aluminium bar are not only anodised, but also powder-coated in black. This finish gives an adventure bike a particularly robust look and is also extremely resistant to scratches.

The Defensa Black is available in a model-specific fit for R 1250/ 1200 GS (from 2013) including Adventure models, Harley Davidson RA1250 Pan America, Honda CRF 1100 Africa Twin, numerous Adventure models from KTM, Triumph Tiger 1200 as well as Yamaha Ténéré 700 and World Raid.

Venhill Throttle Cables for KTM and Husky 2-Strokes

High quality British-made control cables with improved performance, durability and a smoother action.

Venhill now offer throttle cable upgrades for the latest generation of KTM and Husqvarna 2-stroke crossers – from the 50cc junior range right up to the 250cc models.

The design team at Venhill had to develop special hybrid core wire to cope with the ‘wheel’ fitting used by KTM to guide the cable to the throttle. The new Hybrid Core wire is wound in the opposite direction to regular cables, which is necessary to reduce friction where it bends bend round ‘wheel’ fitting.

The Venhill throttle cables are a direct replacement for the OEM KTM and Husky items and will deliver improved performance and durability along with smoother action – a quick and easy upgrade that can make a massive difference to performance and reliability.

Each cable is made to Venhill’s high quality Featherlight specification – marine-grade stainless steel inner wire and a PTFE ‘teflon’ liner, to minimise friction, give a lighter action and reduce the need for regular lubrication – a real plus when riding off-road.

They’re also ‘Bird-caged’ – a special process, which  allows solder to penetrate the weave of the cable, making the bond with the nipple much stronger. This helps prevent cable breakage when put under repeated stress and pressure – adding peace of mind when tackling demanding MX tracks.

Fitments are available for the KTM SX 125,150 and 250 from 2021-on and the Husqvarna TC125 and 250 2021-on. Prices start at  £33.86 (inc VAT).

Kids get the same quality as the adults too, with fitments for the KTM SX 50, 50 Mini, 65 and 85, (2021-on) as well as the 2021-on Husky TC50, 50 Mini and 85 at £33.86 (inc VAT).

Cables are available in Black, Orange and Blue options to match KTM and Husky factory colours. Other colours are available, to suit personal taste or for matching to team liveries, and Venhill cables can even be ordered with extra length, for custom set-ups.

Super Soco-Vmoto UK Acquired by Manufacturer

UK’s biggest selling electric motorcycle distributor (Super Soco-Vmoto UK) acquired by manufacturer.

The UK’s best-selling electric motorcycle brand, Super Soco (Vmoto) has been strategically bought out by the manufacturer (Vmoto Soco Group), to guarantee long term stability to owners and dealers.

The UK distributor, which has promoted the brand since 2015 to make it synonymous with electric bikes, will now be known as Vmoto Soco UK.

A new range of machines, available from just £1,699, will continue to sell under the Super Soco name, alongside newly introduced premium Vmoto branded models such as the newly launched and well-received ‘Stash’ machine. Additionally, dedicated Vmoto fleet models will further extend the important fleet sales opportunity for delivery bikes.

With electric scooters and lower output motorcycles continuing to grow in popularity, these product ranges of dealer sold and delivery fleet models should bolster this vibrant sector of the UK market.

Vmoto Soco Group Managing Director Mr Charles Chen said, “This is a strategic acquisition that provides Vmoto with direct access to over 50 active B2C dealers in the UK, which is an important EV market for the company and will allow Vmoto to further expand its presence in the UK with an established management team. Direct sales to the B2C dealers will also allow Vmoto to grow the UK market share with more focused support.”

Andy Fenwick, Managing Director, Vmoto UK Distribution Limited commented; “Super Soco has become very well known amongst electric bike fans in the UK and our dealer network has made great strides in building brand confidence, so it is great that the manufacturer itself has invested into the distributor.”

Clive Mann Vmoto Soco UK Sales Director added “This acquisition is a potential game changer for the UK two wheel EV market, allowing for us to push the Vmoto Super Soco as a manufacturer owned brand to the next level. Our aim is for this to benefit all, dealers, the environment and ultimately the end customer, the rider”

Ducati Communication System V3 by Cardo

For the travellers, but also for those who ride their Ducati every day, the Borgo Panigale company presents the new Ducati Communication System V3 by Cardo.

The new intercom offers enthusiasts the most innovative communication technologies – such as Dynamic Mesh Communication (DMC) connectivity – without sacrificing the unmistakable Ducati red.

The streamlined, antenna-free silhouette makes this intercom aerodynamic, improving comfort, silence and aesthetics, and the magnetic mount for attachment to the helmet simplifies installation. Ducatisti can thus fully enjoy the sights and sensations of any trip without distraction or discomfort, supported by excellent connectivity.

It is equipped with the Dynamic Mesh Communication system, which guarantees stable performance and enables connection to a group of up to 15 motorcyclists within a radius of 1.6 km. It can also connect to any Bluetooth device by managing functions with voice commands, with automatic switching between intercom and phone.

Cardo’s proven Mesh connectivity allows the device to leave and rejoin the group automatically, without complicated procedures to be carried out when traffic conditions or an unexpected change of route lead to getting away from friends. Its high autonomy (13 hours with a two-hour full charge) makes it extremely practical. If necessary, with a quick charge of just 20 minutes, you already have two hours of autonomy. Software updates are possible via USB cable or via the Cardo Connect app.

A synthesis of comfort, practicality and ease of use, to make every journey an unforgettable experience.

Norton Motorcycles honours Beatrice Shilling

Norton Motorcycles honours Beatrice Shilling with 1938 Norton International at opening of Coventry University building.

Norton Motorcycles has presented its heritage collection 1938 Norton International at the official opening of the Coventry University’s Beatrice Shilling Building.

A pioneering mechanical engineer in both the fields of motorsport and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), in 1934, Beatrice Shilling became one of three women to win the Gold Star at the Brooklands circuit, completing a lap with an average speed of 101mph on her very own Norton M30 500cc.

In her honour, Coventry University has named its new Faculty of Engineering, Environment & Computing building after the famous engineer and motorcycle racer.

The official opening of the building was delayed due to COVID and rescheduled for 8th March on International Women’s Day, as well as what would have been Beatrice’s 114th birthday, and so the celebration of Shilling’s accomplishments within STEM and motorsport is timely.

For the event and to recognise the significance of Shilling’s contributions, Norton presented its 1938 Norton International – a close relation to the Norton M30 – from the heritage collection that usually resides within the foyer of the company’s Solihull headquarters.

The celebration welcomed as special guests Beatrice Shilling’s great-niece Jo Denbury and her daughter Saskia Preston, as well as Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE, Co-founder and CEO of Stemettes, the award-winning social enterprise focussed on inspiring and supporting girls, young women and non-binary young people in STEM.

A woman in a man’s world: Life of Beatrice Shilling

1909 – Beatrice Shilling was born in Waterlooville, Hampshire.

1923 – At age 14, Beatrice reportedly bought her first motorcycle quickly learning to strip and rebuild its engine to improve the bike’s performance.

1929 – Having worked on motorcycles throughout her youth, Shilling was keen to pursue this passion and went on to study electrical engineering at The University of Manchester.

1932 – After receiving her Bachelor’s degree, Beatrice stayed on for a further year gaining a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

1934 – A competitive motorcycle racer, Beatrice became one of only three women to win the Gold Star at the Brooklands circuit, finishing a lap with an average speed of over 100mph on her Norton M30 500cc. This was the fastest lap ever to be achieved in her time.

1936 – Unafraid to compete in a male-dominated industry, Beatrice was recruited to the Royal Aircraft Establishment (R.A.E.), writing manuals for aeroplane engines.

1939 – Three years later and Beatrice is promoted to Technical Officer, charged with carburettor research and development. It was at this point, World War II broke out and Beatrice’s expertise became crucial to the war effort. Working closely on the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine used in the Spitfire and Hurricane, Beatrice developed the R.A.E. restrictor to prevent the aeroplane engines from becoming flooded with fuel when entering a steep dive.

1949 – Beatrice was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by King George VI.

1956 – Beatrice joined the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and was elected as an Associate Member. This was in addition to her long-standing membership of the Women’s Engineering Society.

1959 – Following World War II, she turned to racing cars with her husband George, including at Goodwood Members’ Meetings where they scored several high-placed results.

1969 – After retiring, Beatrice received an honorary doctorate from the University of Surrey.

1990 – Beatrice Shilling passed away at the age of 81 leaving a legacy of exceptional contribution to engineering and motor racing.
