Dunlop Trailmax Raid chosen for rally-inspired special edition from Suzuki Italy

Suzuki Italy has revealed a special edition of its popular V-Strom model, featuring Dunlop Trailmax Raid tyres as part of a package of adventure-focused upgrades that evoke memories of Suzuki’s historic off-road prowess.

The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE Djebel was revealed at the Motor Bike Expo in Verona, Italy, earlier this month, and is characterised by graphics reminiscent of the brand’s enduro models of the 80s and 90s, and the DR-Z which raced in several editions of the Dakar rally.

A key technical upgrade is the selection of Dunlop Trailmax Raid tires for the 21 and 17-inch rims. Dunlop’s 50/50 on/off-road tyre was revealed last year and is designed for riders who require confidence-inspiring off-road performance without compromising on wet and dry on-road traction. Furthermore, the tyre’s rally raid-inspired design offers a more ‘off-road ready’ style than the Trailmax Mixtour tires available on the standard V-Strom 800DE model.

Marco Quaglino, Sales Manager Moto & Marine, Suzuki Italy: “We wanted to further emphasise the off-road soul of the V-Strom 800DE Djebel by preparing it so that it would be ready to tackle any road. The choice of tyres fell on Dunlop Trailmax Raid, which provide excellent performance both off-road and on asphalt, offering high versatility to customers.”

In the last 12 months, Trailmax Raid has become a key product in the trail and adventure tire market, increasing Dunlop’s offering to the segment alongside other key tyres, including Trailmax Meridian for 90% on-road adventure touring use, the Mutant crossover tire with its excellent wet weather performance and Trailmax Mission for long-distance adventure riding in tough terrains.

They sit alongside more products, such as Trailmax Mixtour and D908RR, which together combine to create Dunlop’s most comprehensive trail offering yet.

Roberto Finetti, Marketing Manager, Dunlop Motorcycle Europe: “It is exciting to see Dunlop Trailmax Raid chosen as a key upgrade to the special edition V-Strom 800DE Djebel. Not only does Trailmax Raid provide on and off-road performance worthy of this heritage edition bike, but it has been designed to look the part on adventure-focused models like this, too.

“Since launching Trialmax Raid a year ago, we have been pleased with its reception in the market, helping to solidify Dunlop’s stronger than ever trail/adventure range, following the introduction of Trailmax Meridian, Trailmax Mission and Mutant to offer wide-ranging options that suit all types of adventure riders.”

SUPERTECH R10 HELMET TECHNICAL FEATURES
OUTER SHELL
CARBON SHELL CONSTRUCTION MULTI-LAYER COMPOSITE DISPERSES ENERGY IN IMPACTS
Homologated to ECE 22.06, DOT, and FIM standards, the Supertech R10’s shell construction utilizes a highly advanced molding technology with a multi-composite combination featuring a 3K high-density carbon outer layer, a uni-directional carbon composite layer, an aramid fiber layer, and a fiberglass layer.

The 3K high-density carbon outer layer provides excellent strength and efficiency of energy dissipation over the shell. The uni-directional (UD) carbon composite layer provides significantly greater radial strength around the shell, preventing compression, but allowing controlled deflection for reducing transmitted impact energy, while the aramid fiber plus fiberglass layers provide critical penetration protection.

This layered composite combination created by bonding everything together with an advanced epoxy resin already applied on the pre-preg fiber, perfectly controls the ideal proportion of resin versus fiber to maximize strength, mechanical performance, and lightweight. The combination of material layers provides improved energy management, as well as limited outer shell deflection, making the energy spread wider and better absorbed by the EPS liner.

The S-R10’s unique shell construction results in extremely effective impact protection. With a fully equipped in-house helmet testing facility within Alpinestars’ state-of-the-art Research and Development center, the company has carried out an exhaustive impact research program, where research and development efforts have shown the S-R10 helmet returning linear and oblique impact performance results which far exceed current ECE 22.06 helmet regulation standard limits. For direct linear impacts, which are impacts at a 90-degree angle between the helmet and an object, the S-R10 surpasses the standard by an average magnitude of 37%. And for rotational acceleration and oblique impact performance, where impact energy comes from an angle other than a linear 90-degree, or right-angle straight impact, the S-R10 exceeds the standard by 65%.

INNER SHELL
THE S-R10’S INNER SHELL IS MADE FROM EPS IN DIFFERENT DENSITIES
The S-R10 Helmet has four inner shells just like the outer shell, and is available in four anatomical sizes. The S-R10’s construction is optimized to ensure riders have the correct fit, which not only improves comfort and reduces overall weight but most importantly, improves the effectiveness of the helmet in an impact. Underneath the helmet’s outer shell is an eight-piece multi-density EPS liner, with six specific densities that are strategically positioned in different zones to ensure excellent energy absorption from impact forces dissipated over the outer shell, as well as a close and comfortable fit. The EPS liner, just like the outer shell, has its own unique dimension for each helmet size, further tailoring the helmet’s performance and fit when it comes to protection and comfort.

LINEAR AND OBLIQUE FORCE MANAGEMENT
The EPS inner surface is smooth, creating an optimized, low-friction area, for superior oblique impact management. When it comes to other types of helmet testing, the best helmets are those that provide protection against rotational, as well as oblique and linear impact forces.

To help fight and mitigate those rotational, oblique, and linear impact forces, Alpinestars has designed a low-friction surface on the inner surface of the EPS liner. The inner surface is polished to be incredibly smooth, and then specially coated to reduce friction even further, allowing the comfort liner to move against the EPS. The result is increased rotational and oblique and linear force management, allowing the rider’s head to move independently inside of the helmet, or vice-versa, which can significantly reduce the amount of force transmitted to the head, neck, brain, and spine from an oblique impact, while simultaneously reducing the possibility of a concussion. To recap, specific rotational impact protection is provided by the combination of the internal shape and the specific coating of the EPS liner, coupled with the specially developed surface in the comfort liner. This patented technology reduces rotational acceleration transmitted to the rider’s head.

A-HEAD FITMENT SYSTEM AND CUSTOMIZED FIT
Adding to the personalization and custom, tailor-made fit of the S-R10, is the helmet’s unique and patented A-Head Fitment System. The A-Head System allows the helmet to be tuned exactly to the rider’s preference by having the ability to adjust both the height and angle at which the helmet sits on the head. The EPS is fitted with the A-Head Fitment System that allows for an ultra-specific setup that can be adapted to how deep the rider’s head sits in the helmet, as well as how far forward or backward the helmet is tilted.

To provide riders with the ability to further tailor the SR10’s fit to better suit a wide variety of different head shapes and sizes, Alpinestars is offering a variety of spare parts in a vast range of sizes giving motorcyclists the ability to change and swap out the cheek pads, crown pad, and top pad with a selection of both thinner and thicker options, to truly customize the helmet’s comfort for a perfect fit. With the S-R10’s various inner comfort liner options, plus the unique and patented A-Head Fitment System, there are virtually countless inner fitment configurations to meet the fit and performance needs of all riders.

AERODYNAMICS
DEVELOPED WITH CFD SIMULATIONS, VALIDATED IN THE WIND TUNNEL AND ON TRACK, THE S-R10 HELMET IS OPTIMIZED FOR LOW DRAG PERFORMANCE AND MAXIMUM AERODYNAMIC STABILITY
Designed and developed for professional MotoGP athletes where going faster and being protected is the goal. By minimizing drag and ensuring optimal aerodynamic stability, air management outside and inside of the helmet, and a comfortable, customizable fit, the S-R10 Helmet ensures the overall experience in racing and sport riding is fit for champions.

The S-R10 has been developed in the full-scale wind tunnel since the beginning of its development. Aerodynamic targets for the coefficient of drag in different head positions, as well as stability at different angles were a primary goal in the helmet shape development, first extensively developed with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), then validated in the full-scale wind tunnel, and finally on track. The result is a helmet that achieves the lowest level of drag, and the highest level of aerodynamic stability at high speed compared to any other race helmet that we have tested in the wind gallery. This has made the S-R10 already the helmet of choice by factory MotoGP teams for its top aerodynamic performance. Road riders will likely benefit from this too, with reduced strain on their necks at high speed and low levels of wind noise.

The S-R10 Helmet’s aerodynamic spoilers are fitted with an Alpinestars patented release system, with elastic joints that help the spoiler detach from the helmet shell if it is subjected to a significant impact, no matter what the angle, to reduce potential rotational energy.

The helmet also comes with lateral winglets to further support the S-R10’s stability and improve aerodynamic drag. In addition, the helmet visor has turbulators to improve aero-acoustic performance. As a result, compared to the aerodynamic performance of the helmet fitted with the standard road spoiler, the S-R10 itself is already the top-performing, aerodynamic helmet we have tested, and with the configuration of the race spoiler and the aero winglets together, Alpinestars Helmet Development team have achieved a reduction in drag for the helmet of an additional 4.54%.

VENTILATION
THE SUPERTECH R10 HELMET CONTAINS ELEVEN VENTILATION POINTS
When it comes to ventilation and breathability, there are 11 ventilation ports, not including the eyeport, with 7 intakes including 3 in the chinguard and 4 on the top of the helmet, plus 4 exhausts, with 2 lateral ports on the chin bar, and 2 on the top rear of the helmet. These ventilation ports integrate directly with the helmet’s shell with a series of air ducts through the inner EPS liner. With the S-R10, airflow comes in through the ports, as well as actively circulates over and around the rider’s head through a series of channels, and then gets extracted out the back of the helmet.

The Top Vent features a large central slider that channels air down to the top of the head for better comfort, which when open, has vents for hot air extraction from the rider’s forehead. Under the rear spoiler, there are two extractor vents for effective hot air exhausting. The Chin Vents are formed by two openings located at the front of the helmet at the sides of the shield lock mechanism, where each flap has a tab in the corner, which is used to open or close the vent. Air entering from this point is channeled towards the inner side of the shields, creating a laminated flow of air that effectively prevents fogging and misting. In addition, the Chin Bar Vents are used to extract humid air to the outside of the helmet.

SHIELD FEATURES
THE SHIELD IS DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM VISION: 220° OF LATERAL VISION AND 57° OF VERTICAL VISION
The shield mechanism is fitted with metal lock levers to to prevent unwanted shield detachment during impacts and/or crashes, which are locked in the closed position by a front metal hook. The cinematic movement is engineered to perfectly seal the visor against the shell’s rubber window trim. The shield is engineered with an impressive wide lowered eyeport on the sides for enhanced peripheral vision, offering 220-degrees of lateral and 57-degrees of vertical visibility and providing a maximized field of view in the riding position and providing great rider comfort.

Additionally, the visor itself can be easily changed or removed thanks to its secure and toolless quick-release system. The S-R10 is fitted with an ECE 22.06 Homologated Optical Class 1 Shield, 3mm in thickness, and coated with an anti-scratch and anti-fog treatment. The shield is equipped with internal pins to accommodate a Pinlock® 120XLT – 100 % MaxVisionTM lens and external pins to accommodate tear-offs.

REMOVABLE PREMIUM LINING
REMOVABLE AND WASHABLE, FEATURING FABRICS WITH ANTI-MICROBIAL TREATMENTS
The S-R10 has eight individual internal parts consisting of the crown pad, top pad, cheek pads, chin curtain, chin strap, ear pads, wind deflector, and breath deflector.

Crown Pad: The crown pad and the neck pad are elastically connected, for enhanced oblique impact management and interface with the smooth surface of the inner EPS liner. The crown pad’s construction is based on four panels (front, sides, rear), for an optimized fit with the proper foam thickness.

Top Pad: The top pad is removable and height adjustable via the A-Head Fitment System.
Cheek Pads: The cheek pads are fitted with premium, 3D foam, and fabrics, offering comfort and breathability. The cheek pads feature an ERS emergency extraction system, allowing the side cheek padding to be easily removed by trained medical professionals and they also have a channel for the installation of a hydration hose.

Chin Curtain: A chin curtain is available inside the box to provide further protection against air entering the helmet from below.

Ear Pads: Ear pads are fixed under each cheek pad and help to improve comfort by reducing the aerodynamic noise, they are removable allowing for the installation of a communication system in the helmet.

Wind and Breath Deflectors: The wind and breath deflectors are included to improve aerodynamic behavior and humid air flow, respectively.

CHIN BAR PROFILE
Another outer shell design protection feature is the chin bar’s profile, where the base area has been specifically sculpted to give a relief section. The bottom profile is raised to clear the collarbone, and instead of the hard carbon shell coming into potential contact with the collarbone, the S-R10 has a softer EPP (expanded Polypropylene) liner which extends beyond the helmet shell itself and is covered by a more flexible rubber compound. This chin bar design provides a reduced chance of any sort of collarbone injury, one of the more common injuries in motorcycling.

WEIGHT
And finally, when it comes to weight, the ECE / DOT / FIM certified Supertech R10 helmet tips the scales at an impressive 1,540 grams for a size medium, or 3.4 pounds, providing the S-R10 with an extremely high performance to protection to weight ratio.

New XL Street Bullet Frame Sliders

The choice of numerous championship-winning race teams, renowned for their incredible ability to absorb the energy from high speed crashes saving damage to the chassis, GBRacing has redesigned and re-imagined the Bullet Slider for the street bike rider.

The new XL Street Bullet Frame Sliders offer the same incredible impact absorption technology with a larger puck for the ultimate in street bike chassis protection.

The XL also uses a reinforced version of the intelligently engineered mounting bush pioneered by the original Bullet Slider that effectively concertinas to absorb the energy of a direct impact.

This bush is also designed with a ‘sacrificial’ weak point. This means should the bike slide into a kerb, it will snap, preventing the slider from digging in, causing the bike to flip and subsequently sustain more damage.

This design also overcomes the age-old, traditional ‘crash bung’ problem of a long bolt bending in a frame at best, tearing threads out or even damaging engine mounts at worst. By using a short bolt that sits close to the bolt socket (5mm) the chance of the bolt bending and causing more (totally avoidable) damage is all but eliminated.

These larger, XL Street Bullet Frame Sliders are ideal for road riders looking for a more substantial looking crash puck to protect against accidental drops and road-speed spills.

For racing and track applications, the original Bullet Frame Sliders remain the recommended option, with proven performance at the very highest level of production racing.

Bolstering GBRacing’s commitment to providing race-developed, world-class motorcycle protection to all riders, these new XL Street Bullet Frame Sliders are available now.

Replacement pucks can also be purchased separately, in keeping with GBRacing’s ethos of affordability and reduced waste.

All GBRacing products are designed and made in the UK and are available to purchase direct from GBRacing or from its official dealers both in the UK and in 40 countries around the world.

IZI’s Ride’ – a unique Custom Shotgun 650

‘IZI’s Ride’ – a unique Custom Shotgun 650 exclusively designed for Netflix’s new feature film ‘THE KITCHEN’

In late 2021 – Royal Enfield, the world’s oldest motorcycle manufacturer in continual production, was shared the script to a new Netflix film, about to start production; co-directed, co-written and co-produced by Oscar and Golden Globe winning Daniel Kaluuya, with Top Boy’s Kane Robinson, a.k.a Kano in the lead role.

A unique challenge was laid to Royal Enfield – to design a one-of-a-kind motorcycle to perfectly fit into the near-future world of ‘THE KITCHEN’. Set in a dystopian London where inequality is unchecked and social segregation based upon income and racial lines is endemic, Izi (played by Kano) and Benji (played by Jedaiah Bannerman, in his debut role) fight to navigate the world they find themselves in. As life-long residents of ‘The Kitchen’, a community existing in one of London’s last-remaining housing estates that refuses to succumb to demands of oppressive authoritarian forces, Izi and Benji face challenges and questions that will alter their futures forever.

The Royal Enfield custom build would play an integral part of the film’s narrative, as well as being a source of status, independence and identity to the life of Izi – Kano’s character. And so, in creative collaboration with London based multidisciplinary artist and musician Gaika Tavares (brother of the film’s co-director Kibwe Tavares), the in-house Custom Team at Royal Enfield’s UK Technology Centre began a creative process of conceptual ideation to develop a machine that would feel fully integrated into this unique landscape.

The boundaries of functionality, form and aesthetics were pushed to the nth degree with each of the multiple sub-designs that were brought to the creative table for consideration. Some designs were heavily inspired by iconic sci-fi references, some were more brutalist and neo-retro in their look and feel, and others played homage to certain aspects of cyber-punk film culture and nods to nostalgic street fashion. Through a process of creative refinement and amalgamation, taking cues and inspiration from the various directions – an anarchic custom ‘mutant’ was born.

Built upon the brand-new Shotgun 650 platform, ‘IZI’s Ride’ is a bold tribute to this very culture of customisation embedded into the DNA of the Royal Enfield brand and celebrates the unique sense of individuality that defines any custom build. Paying homage to its precursor, the SG650 Concept (shown for the first time at EICMA 2021) with its neo-dystopian design and radical aesthetics, ‘IZI’s Ride’ pushes the limits to what the customs of tomorrow could potentially look like.

Custom features developed for ‘IZI’s Ride’ include:

● Front and rear wheel hub covers – rapid prototype
● Monocoque tank & seat unit cover – rapid prototype and milled foam
● Integrated perspex and LED tail lamp
● New sub-frame – fabricated steel
● Replacement side covers – rapid prototype
● Front fork covers with integrated LED lighting – rapid prototyping and milling
● Swingarm covers – rapid prototyping
● Bespoke colour and graphics – paint and vinyl

Says Adrian Sellers, Head of Royal Enfield’s Custom & Motorsport programme; “We’re really excited to write another chapter in the rapidly evolving story of Royal Enfield design and customisation with ‘IZI’s Ride’. It’s been a real honour and certainly a first for us as a brand to be so prominently involved in a major Netflix film, and to take design inspiration and start the conceptualisation process quite literally from reading the pages of a major film script written by an Oscar winner. To have the opportunity to work with such a wide team of incredible creatives, actors, directors and designers all at the very top of their game was an experience we’ve relished.”

“It is always exciting to design for a ‘what if…’ scenario, to really push the bounds of convention and fulfil a creative brief that’s quite like no other that’s come our way before. The constructed world of ‘The Kitchen’ is so incredibly visceral, and so masterfully engineered by the production and directorial team, that to create a motorcycle that would feel utterly believable and at home within such a future-dystopian environment while at the same time be instantly recognizable in carrying Royal Enfield’s custom DNA was a real challenge. In fact, we ended up creating two identical motorcycles as there were a number of requirements in the script for the bike to be crashed, scraped and generally thrown about. The riding scenes and the stunt work in the film are very impressive, and the film certainly shines a light on various elements of underground bike subcultures which are largely misunderstood. The whole project was wonderfully collaborative and rewarding to develop, requiring the creative input of many different aspects of our internal design team – from Industrial Design to Color Trim and Graphics and CGI – as well as drawing upon the vision and creativity of such a renowned and respected artist as Gaika. Each member contributed their own piece to the puzzle in bringing this iconic build to life.”

Akrapovič and Ducati to Extend Partnership with New Off-Road Collaboration

Akrapovič and Ducati already enjoy a successful relationship in the commercial and racing worlds. Now this alliance is expanding to off-road racing with the announcement that the Slovenian company will supply the official exhaust of the Ducati Corse Off-Road team.

Akrapovič has a strong bond with Ducati Corse, and this partnership witnessed Ducati riders Francesco Bagnaia (MotoGP™), Álvaro Bautista (WorldSBK), and Nicolò Bulega (WorldSSP) win 2023 world championship titles while using Akrapovič exhausts. As part of preparations to defend those titles this season, the official presentation of the 2024 Ducati Lenovo Team and the Aruba.it Racing – Ducati team was held at the Campioni in Pista 2024 event in Madonna di Campiglio, Italy. It was during this prestigious launch that the Ducati Corse Off-Road team also unveiled its plans for the forthcoming season, including that the team will be using Akrapovič exhaust systems.

The Ducati Corse Off-Road programme has been working intensively on the 450 prototype, with nine-time MX World Champion Antonio Cairoli recently joining the team as a high-performance test rider to apply his talent, speed, and experience to provide important feedback and direction for the development of the new motorcycle. The bike will be equipped with an all-new Akrapovič exhaust and will make its debut in the 2024 Italian Motocross Championship. Alessandro Lupino, eight-time Italian Champion and 2021 MXoN winner, will be onboard to validate the technical solutions and development of the bike within the demands of a racing environment.

The new off-road division of Ducati Corse will deal with the management and organization of the Bologna-based manufacturer’s sporting programme, which will see participation in the MXGP World Championship and the AMA Supercross Championship in the next few years. With an emphasis on high-performance, lightness, and components that can be pushed to the extreme, with an engine supplying a broad power delivery curve, the Ducati Desmo450 MX prototype will use an Akrapovič exhaust system specially designed for the bike that fits these criteria. The use of lightweight titanium and a durable design will ensure the system meets the harsh demands of off-road racing. This bespoke exhaust has been developed with close cooperation between Ducati Corse and Akrapovič engineers to optimize the character of the Ducati’s unique powerplant, while at the same time ensuring the exhaust is compliant with FIM noise regulations.

Akrapovič has taken its wealth of knowledge and experience from racing since its inception in 1991 – which has seen the company celebrate 175 world champions in road and off-road racing – into this programme, and it has utilized its extensive know-how and state-of-the-art technology to produce a high-performance exhaust system for the Ducati Desmo450 MX prototype.

Paolo Ciabatti, General Manager, Ducati Corse Off-Road:
“We are very pleased to have extended Ducati Corse’s long-lasting and successful relationship with Akrapovič also to our exciting new off-road program. Their experience in the development of high-performance titanium exhaust systems has been very beneficial for us, also considering the demanding future FIM noise regulations, in place from 2025 onwards. Therefore we want to thank Akrapovič for their continued support to our racing activities, and we will work hard to bring to success also Ducati Corse Off-Road on the motocross tracks.”

Slavko Alojz Trstenjak, Head of Akrapovič Racing R&D:
“After several years of successful collaboration with Ducati Corse, we’re pleased to also be their number-one choice as a development partner and exhaust system supplier for Ducati’s entry into the motocross programme. In developing the exhaust system’s configuration, which satisfied their demanding racers used to high standards, the Akrapovič Racing R&D department also joined forces with our production exhaust systems R&D. We’ll be following the new team’s performance with great interest, along with the development of their racing bike, for which I’m sure we’ll upgrade the exhaust system even further. Everyone at Akrapovič wishes Ducati a successful start in motocross.”

SW-Motech Tank Bags and Protection for BMW R 1300 GS

Tank Ring, Tank Bags and Engine Bars are first in range of accessories for the new 1300 GS

SW-Motech are quick off the block, with a range of practical accessories for the latest incarnation of BMW’s best-selling adventure sport bike.

Number one on the list for most riders is luggage capacity and the PRO Tank Ringmakes carrying handy items easy.

The proven system features a magnetic guide – developed by Fidlock – which steers the bag into position on the tank ring for uber-quick mounting. The locking mechanism then clicks firmly into place, for a fuss-free fit every time; it can even be done one-handed. Removing it, for refuelling and at stops, is just as simple.

The Tank Ring is fully compatible with all PRO Tank Bags, including the PRO GS Tank Bag. Designed specifically for adventure bikes like the BMW R 1300 GS, with its steeply sloped fuel tank, the GS Tank Bag has a sturdy EVA plastic base that maintains its shape even when packed full. The factory-fitted upper ring guide rail allows for the tank bag to slide backwards and forwards to suit the ergonomic needs of the rider and shape of the tank. Only the PRO tank bags offer this flexibility.

This stable tank bag offers a generous 20 litres of storage, making it the perfect companion for long journeys. Crafted with durable ballistic nylon, the PRO GS is built to withstand the elements. The laminated EVA top adds a distinctive shape and provides a secure platform for your smartphone or tablet holder, thanks to the integrated MOLLE system.

There are two external pockets, mesh compartments in the interior to keep things tidy, cable feed-through inlets on the front and rear and a rain cover for use in adverse conditions.

SW-Motech’s engineers have also been quick off the mark with Upper and Lower Crash Bars for the new GS.

Made from heavy-duty steel tubing, they form a protective barrier around the fuel tank, fairing and the Boxer Twin’s vulnerable cylinder heads.

Each set is tailor made in SW-Motech’s European factory, and fixes to existing points on the bike – no drilling or additional brackets needed. They add minimal width, so they won’t affect handling or cornering.

The bars are powder coated to prevent corrosion and blend in with the Beemer’s styling. Surface finishing is carried out in SW-Motech’s own state-of-the-art facility in the Czech Republic, to guarantee quality and consistency.

Prices (including VAT) are as follows:

  • PRO Tank Ring – £32.34
  • PRO GS Tank Bag – £222.95
  • Upper Crash Bars – £221.76
  • Lower Crash Bars – £249.48

Additional accessories for the GS will be added to the catalogue in the coming months.

No doubt that MV Agusta fans around the world will enjoy the movie just as much as we do.”

In Argylle, Bryce Dallas Howard plays Elly Conway, the reclusive author of a series of best-selling espionage novels, whose idea of bliss is a night at home with her cat, Alfie. But when the plots of Elly’s fictional books—which center on secret agent Argylle and his mission to unravel a global spy syndicate—begin to mirror the covert actions of a real-life spy organization, quiet evenings at home become a thing of the past. Accompanied by Aidan (Sam Rockwell), a cat-allergic spy, Elly (carrying Alfie in her backpack) races across the world to stay one step ahead of the killers as the line between her fictional world and her real one begins to blur.

BMW Motorrad presents the R 18 One Eight “C”

Custom motorcycle visionary Paul Yaffe has raised the bar once again with the revelation of his latest masterpiece, a one-of-a-kind customization of the BMW R 18 Transcontinental.

Melding classic hot rod aesthetics with the distinctive BMW essence, this project is a testament to Yaffe’s excellence as a designer.

A legend of the US customizing scene:
Since 1991, the custom motorcycle world has known Paul Yaffe as one of the elite creators of motorized masterpieces. That’s because Paul is more than a builder or fabricator, he is truly a designer. Beginning with the establishment of American Legend Motorcycle Company, which later evolved into Paul Yaffe’s Bagger Nation, he has earned accolades such as three “World’s Most Beautiful Motorcycle” awards from the Oakland Roadster Show, two “Builder of Year” and three “Trendsetter of the Year” awards from Easyriders Magazine, as well as becoming an inductee into the Sturgis Hall of Fame in 2015. His custom bikes have been featured in over 300 magazine articles worldwide as well as on the Discovery channel, the History channel, and other television shows. His products, distributed through a network of partners in six countries, continue to inspire a generation of customizers.

Now, Paul Yaffe reveals his latest masterpiece — a one-of-a-kind customization of the BMW R 18 Transcontinental, which will debut at the MBE Show in Verona, Italy.

Preserving BMW Essence and Hot Rod Inspiration.
Before getting started, Paul spent time getting to know the BMW R18 Transcontinental, riding 3800 miles across the USA, and additional 2600 miles to Sturgis and back.

Once the customization process began, Paul knew he wanted to create a big wheel bagger like no one had ever seen. Crucial to the project was retaining as many original BMW components as possible. Paul wanted his custom creation to remain authentically BMW and knew that it should not be made from or look anything like parts from his existing product line.

He commissioned a 26” x 5.5” front wheel cut from a 400lb block of solid aluminium, which holds a handmade 180mm wide front tire. The frame had to be stretched and raked to accommodate the new front wheel and special triple trees had to be engineered to correct the trail measurement and optimize handling.

Embracing the look of an iconic 50’s Mercury Lead Sled the team crafted several
one-of-a-kind components and modified existing R 18 elements. The steel front fender was made from scratch. The original R 18 fairing was cut into several pieces and restructured to correct headlight position and flow into the new front wheel. To address the gap between the fairing and the fuel tank a unique chin spoiler was developed, strategically concealing the radiator. Additionally, an exclusive set of Yaffe Monkey Bars was crafted to complement the overall design.

“The team wanted to retain the saddlebag lids, latches and speakers so a new set of ‘skins’ was created to give the bags a completely new and unique stretched profile while retaining the excellent engineering and functionality that BMW had created for them.” Paul’s team extended the original rear fender by crafting a second R 18 rear fender, ensuring it seamlessly matched the profile of the new saddlebags.

As the build began to take shape, Yaffe rearranged the original R 18 taillights into the handmade filler panels and worked an area for the license plate into the fender in classic hot rod styling. He also stretched the original R 18 side covers to retain their original shape and cover more area to help the eye flow into the bags.

Classic Lead Sled Look.
Staying true to the classic Lead Sled aesthetic, Yaffe prioritized two crucial components: air suspension and side pipes.

Paul and his team designed a sophisticated air tank and distribution system as well as a dedicated frame beneath each side of the saddlebags to accommodate essential components, including the necessary air storage tanks, a sizable air compressor and all the controls, valving and solenoids necessary for the effective support and operation of the system.

Turning their focus to the side pipe design the fabrication team aimed to preserve the distinctive “BMW feel” that sets this build apart. Retaining the classic Boxer head pipes was non-negotiable in Paul’s vision. The catalytic converters were removed from the head pipes making way for a bespoke perforated high-flow baffle system. This innovation not only replaced the restrictive emissions system but also retained essential back pressure for optimal performance. To further enhance the auditory experience a precision-crafted
3-step muffler system was introduced for reversion. The final touch was a wide-open megaphone, delivering that quintessential classic hot rod sound.

It all comes down to cosmetics.
Shifting focus to cosmetics Paul wanted a classic hot rod feel without any distracting graphics, highlighting the bike’s elegant new stance and profile. The emphasis was on simplicity and allure. “We went to work perfecting all the fabricated body panels and smoothing everything to a glass-like finish.” After settling on a timeless deep gloss black finish, the team’s attention turned to achieving perfection for the body. Paul tasked his dedicated painter Hector Martinez, with applying the flawless gloss black paint. Recognizing the need for contrast, Paul decided on a classic ochs blood red interior. The art is in finding the perfect balance. “The trick is not to overdo it!” Guys Upholstery created the contemporary-style saddle and dash console and Hector mixed up a colour for the front callipers to match. “We think it came out spectacular!”
