New Unique Dynamic Racing Concept

Unique combination of two brake pad compounds meets different braking preferences in racing

After more than two years testing, the well-known racing brake pad compound DS-1 is now followed by DS-2 to match different braking performances. From the testing not only a new compound, but a whole new unique concept emerged: The combination of mounting two different compounds for track use.

SBS has been actively involved in road racing at the highest level since the 1990s. Over the last 2 seasons, selected teams in the World Superbike, Moto2 and Moto3 GP, British Superbike and World Endurance Championships have therefore actively participated in fine-tuning of the latest compound from SBS Friction A/S now launched as DS-2 Dual Sinter.

The DS-2 has been developed based on requests from riders wanting a compound with a little more human initial bite and more powerful braking power in the end of long brakings compared to DS-1.

During the development SBS received various feedback. SBS race manager Allan Østli: “Many riders were very satisfied with the new DS-2, but some still felt that the initial bite was reduced too much compared to DS-1. On the other hand some riders who preferred DS-1, occasionally missed a little more braking power at the end of braking with DS-2. Therefore a completely new braking concept emerged: The Dynamic Racing Concept combining the strong initial bite and linear in-stop performance from DS-1 and the smooth initial bite and progressive in-stop performance from DS-2”.

The Dynamic Racing Concept makes it possible to fit the DS-1 on the left hand side brake disc and DS-2 on the right hand side brake disc, thus achieving a combination of the different performance characteristics of the two compounds. In short, a fine tuning of braking performance for the individual rider’s brake preferences.

SBS riders still have different preferences and Kervin Bos, Technical Team Manager Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team and his team prefer the new DS-2 “Our partnership with SBS is a great asset for our team in the WorldSBK championship –  the support we receive and quality of the product are second to none.

Our technical partnership with SBS allows us to develop the optimum brake performance to suit each rider. For us, the standout performer is SBS DS-2 brake pad”.

The cooperation between SBS and a large number of winning teams has made high demands on SBS Research and Development and has led to many titles in the World Superbike, Supersport and Superstock classes and even more titles in National Championships worldwide. All SBS DS brake pads are made using NRS technology. NRS Safe products exclusively use the NUCAP Retention System (NRS), the most advanced mechanical attachment technology with a zero failure rate in over 1 Billion units Worldwide.

RDMOTO Protect The MT-07

Light, easy to fit and unobtrusive, RDMOTO’s range of crash protection for the Yamaha MT-07 is a cost-effective way of guarding against the damage and expense caused by dropping the bike – whether on road, on track or at the kerbside!

PH01 Protectors are the classic ‘mushroom’ shape and are made from hard-wearing black or white polyamide with a steel insert, to increase strength. They measure 50 x 60mm, attach to existing points on the MT-07 and come complete with fitting kit. They retail at £46.80 including VAT.

PHV1 Protectors are similar, but come with an anodized cap that’s available in a choice of seven different colours, and retail at £68.40.

SL01 Crash Sliders feature a larger sliding surface – 119 x 72mm – for added protection during a slide or drop. They’re also made from polyamide, can be adjusted to suit the bike’s profile and come with a choice of seven anodized inserts and a fitting kit, selling for £88.80 including VAT.

Alternatively, SLD Diamond Sliders are made from POM-C, a strong and rigid resin, which offers very low friction during a slide. They can be rotated to follow the bike’s lines and cost £109.20.

Matching Front and Rear Axle Protectors are available too – protecting the vulnerable axle ends and rear swingarm. They’re manufactured from polyamide, measure 40 x 50mm and sell for £31.20 including VAT for each pair.

Alternatively MT-07 owners can opt for the more traditional Crash Frame, which shields the MT’s lower and upper engine casings. Made from high quality tubular steel, the bars are powder coated in black and retail at £102.00 including VAT. They can be used in conjunction with the PH01 ‘mushroom’ protectors for additional peace of mind. Special edition yellow versions (£125.00) can be fitted with SLD protectors.

Scottoiler celebrate 500k production milestone

Glasgow-based chain lubrication experts, Scottoiler, have announced an historic company milestone with the production of over 500,000 chain lubrication systems for the worldwide motorcycle market.

Invented over 40 years ago by Fraser Scott, the company’s chain oiler devices provide automatic continuous lubrication for motorcycle chains.

After investing almost all his money in the prototype, Fraser initially started selling just a few units from his living room but, as satisfied customers spread the word, he began employing part time bicycle racers.

His daughter, Fiona, took over the reins as Managing Director in 1997 and continued to successfully develop the company’s international profile, a process which culminated in the launch of a partnership with BMW Motorrad in 2010.

Scottoiler now exports into over 40 countries while remaining loyal to its original roots and values. The company develops and manufactures its high quality products at its small factory just north of Glasgow. Despite the growth in the business, all Scottoiler products are still assembled by hand by a dedicated production team with the vast majority of component parts being sourced from UK subcontractors.

Production Manager Stephen Hood said: “While it might be cheaper to manufacture our products in the Far East, Scottoiler has strong values which are based on supporting and contributing to our local community. For that reason, our management team is fully committed to continue producing in the UK.”

Managing Director Fiona Scott Thomson commented: “Reaching the half million production mark is a fantastic milestone for the business and a real testament to the dedication of our staff. They are working hard every day to ensure we can continue to bring quality products to the entire two-wheel community, both in Scotland and overseas.

“The fact that we have been able to create what is a real international success story from our small facility in Scotland with just 20 people emphasises what a terrific achievement it is to reach this latest landmark for the business.”

Scottoiler’s progress was further confirmed with the announcement in December 2017 of an extension to its existing partnership with BMW Motorrad for its new F750GS and F850GS models and a presentation of its new products for 2018 at the recent NEC Motorcycle Live show.

Cool Handguards From Machineart

Machineart ADVance Guard multi-functional hand guards can be adapted to suit weather and riding conditions in seconds, without tools, for comfort and confidence on any ride.

ADVance Guards consist of three main components: a wide aluminum Safety Frame with an open airflow front; an Insert that fills the open front when snapped in; and a Sliding Shield that is adjustable up and down to control airflow and adapt to different weather conditions.

The wide Aluminum Safety Frame provides protection for hands, brake and clutch levers during a drop, or impact with branches and other obstacles when trail riding.

Used without the Insert or Adjustable Shield attached, the open centre permits cooling air flow during hot weather. Fully extended vertical coverage is 142mm.

The ADVance Guards’ frame fits to the bar end and to the handlebar with lightweight and robust forged aluminium mounts that are shaped to clear control cables. The Insert and Sliding Shield are injection molded in a resilient polymer and are easily attached or removed from the aluminium frame.

Plan Unveiled For WP Suspension to Get in Front in UK

New shock tactics to distribute WP Suspension products and accessories

The 1st of January 2018 will herald a change in the way WP Suspension products are distributed in the UK. The Austrian parent company, WP Performance Sports GmbH, is entrusting the establishment of a new network of Authorized Centres to KTM UK, thus transferring the responsibility of the brand’s products to the Silverstone-based company. Gareth Edmunds has been appointed as WP Brand Manager, who will manage the establishment of the network of Authorized Centres to sell and service both WP OEM equipment and Pro Components parts.

WP is at the forefront of suspension technology, delivering race winning performance in a wide range of competitive environments. From Motocross and Supercross to Enduro and Rally through to Superbike and every class of MotoGP, racers have scored an impressive array of victories with WP suspension at the heart of these wins. The expertise garnered in competition have filtered down into state-of-the-art products for the Aftermarket and OEM markets.

Discussions regarding the appointment of these new Authorized Centres are at an advanced stage, and WP will announce the full list in due course. Eight mainland Authorized Centres and one based in Northern Ireland are expected to be operating early in 2018.

The changes being made are customer driven. The ability to have a geographically spread and factory trained network of Authorized Centres will benefit WP customers who will receive high service levels, technician specialisation, the back-up of the considerable expertise WP can offer, and a more local service. Each Authorized Centre will be able to sell, setup and service WP’s range of competition-focused Pro Components, such as the company’s famed Cone Valve forks and Trax rear shock absorber. Pro Component parts – from triple clamps and steering dampers to t-shirts and stickers – will also be available for those looking to tune their performance to perfection. Each Centre will be able to supply spare parts and servicing items, either direct to the customer or to other outlets, ensuring that customers get back riding without delay.

In terms of Off Road Pro Component products, WP can deliver Spring Cone Valve forks and Trax shocks to an extensive list of Japanese models, as well as to KTM and Husqvarna customers looking to replace their OEM units to get the most performance out of their bike. Additionally, AER Cone Valve forks, which combines WP’s two greatest technologies, the cone valve damping and the AER Spring System can also be supplied to KTM and Husqvarna machines. Away from the adult market, KTM and Husqvarna customers are able to buy Pro Component WP suspension on models from 50 to 85cc, with AER Cone Valve forks and the Trax shock available for the KTM 85 SX and Husqvarna TC 85. All these products will now only be available through a WP Authorized Centre.

In addition to the Off Road Pro Component products available from WP there is also a range of On Road Competition Cartridge Kits, Competition Shocks and steering dampers, as well as forks, shocks and steering dampers for Road Racing Bikes. Both Off Road and On Road products will be available from all Authorized Centres.

Gareth Edmunds, WP Brand Manager, UK. “This is an opportunity to realise potential, both for riders and WP. For customers, the fitment of WP Pro Components or honing of their OEM suspension is a chance to enhance their riding and results – regardless of the badge on the tank. The move to establish a network of WP Authorized Centres enables us to concentrate pockets of expertise around the country and for them to develop close relationships with their riders so that they can deliver their services effectively. And for WP it better allows the distribution of knowledge gained in world level racing to reach the customer, either through products or through factory training.”

Jan Nobis, WP Sales Manager, Austria. “We are really excited that the UK will develop this new network of Authorized Centres in 2018. This model is being replicated across all of our territories and it enables us to build upon WP’s considerable reputation. The result will be that we are able to deliver class leading products and services to riders and racers that will have a demonstrable impact on their riding and results.”

Further details can be found at www.wp-group.com, where customers are able to enter details of their machine into a configurator to understand what WP options are available, which can then be emailed to their local Authorized Centre.

RDMOTO protection for Suzuki GSX-R1000 L7

Made from black or white polyamide, it is 119mm long and 72mm high and the angle of the protector can be adjusted to suit the bike’s profile. Supplied with fitting kit, with a choice of seven anodized inserts, for £102.00.

Alternatively, the SLD Diamond Sliders are made from POM-C, a highly crystalline resin that is strong and rigid, with a low coefficient of friction. Milled on 5-axis CNC machines, they are fitted to the motorcycle with duralumin adapters, and can be rotated to follow its lines. RRP £118.80.

Matching front axle protectors, made from black polyamide with an anodized aluminium cap, are available in seven colours, selling for £43.20 including VAT. The length of the protector is 25mm and its width is 49mm.

Completing the package are fully adjustable brake and clutch levers. Produced from duralumin T 70-75 and milled on modern CNC machines, they come in ‘Short’ (136mm) and ‘Standard’ (170mm) sizes and a stainless steel box is inserted in the lever adjustment mechanism, to increase its durability. Available in a choice of seven colours, the anodized surface is protected by a special UV-resistant varnish. RRP £94.95.

Following the success of their collaboration on the existing F700GS and F800GS models, the BMW Motorrad automatic chain lubrication system will be available in early 2018 as an optional accessory for the new BMW F750GS and F850GS models.

Glasgow-based chain lubrication systems experts, Scottoiler, have announced an extension of their successful partnership with BMW Motorrad with the launch of a new co-branded chain oiler.

Following the success of their collaboration on the existing F700GS and F800GS models, the BMW Motorrad automatic chain lubrication system will be available in early 2018 as an optional accessory for the new BMW F750GS and F850GS models.

Project Manager Matthias Ennen said: “We have been working with BMW over the last few years to integrate the Scottoiler systems into their new chain driven models and we are very excited to finally see the finished product hit the market.

“The Scottoiler chain lubrication system will blend seamlessly with the F750GS and F850GS and automatically take over users’ chain maintenance regime.”

Scottoiler systems are designed to remove the messy and time consuming task of manually lubricating the motorbike chain whilst offering increased chain and sprockets life in addition to improved final drive efficiency.

The system, which comprises an oil reservoir, vacuum controlled valve and dispenser assembly to gravity feed lubricant onto the rear sprocket, maintains the final drive transmission automatically during riding.

Fiona Scott Thomson, Managing Director of Scottoiler, stated: “Scottoiler is widely recognised as the leading expert on chain maintenance and this relationship with BMW Motorrad highlights our expertise, the quality of our products and the importance of proper chain maintenance with an on board system.”

Installation of the chain-lubrication system will be performed by BMW Motorrad technicians ensuring that the product installation is of the highest possible standard. The new chain oiler product will be available exclusively through the BMW Motorrad worldwide dealer network.

In addition, customers will have a choice of two oils, Scottoil Standard which is designed for average daily temperatures of 0-30°C (32-86°F), and Scottoil Super which is designed for average daily temperatures of 20-40°C (68-104°F). Unlike traditional chain care products Scottoil is designed to be used specifically with Scottoiler automatic chain lubrication systems.

Low down on BMW R1200GS seats

Even small changes to a motorcycle’s riding position can make a big difference to rider comfort, so German BMW accessory specialists, Wunderlich, developed a Seat Lowering Kit for the latest generation, liquid cooled R1200GS and Adventure.

A very quick, simple and effective method of changing the seat height, the kit consists of replacement rubber grommets that lower the seat on the GS by 10mm.

Although a small amount on paper, it can be enough to ease the strain on knees and hips on longer journeys, and can help the rider get a firm foot on the ground when fully loaded with luggage and/or a passenger.

Ideal for touring and adventure-riding, as well as commuting, the grommets can be fitted for riding off-road, or for tackling busy urban environments with lots of stop-start riding; then simply removed in favour of the originals to raise the set again for extra comfort on longer stretches.

Fitting and removal takes seconds and requires no tools or special equipment – much easier than modified suspension linkages – and unlike a replacement seat, the kit can be easily carried in luggage for use when travelling.

It also costs significantly less at just £15.00 including VAT. The kit fits all 2013-on, liquid-cooled R1200GS and 2014-on R1200 Adventure models.

Visit www.nippynormans.com for details.

Neatly organised into a tough roll-up pouch are combination wrenches, locking pliers, a 6-in-1 screwdriver, hex and star wrenches, and much more. A special 27mm x 32mm combination wrench fits most rear – and many front – axles and the ratchet is pro-grade, for faultless operation every time. All tools are lifetime guaranteed.

Bagger better screen for the K1600 B

Wunderlich’s new Ergo 2 Screen is designed to bring extra protection from noise and buffeting, making the K1600 Bagger even more comfortable on longer journeys, without ruining the model’s distinctive lines.

Similar in size and shape to the original screen, the Ergo 2 is has subtle differences, such as an air-flow breakaway edge to minimise turbulence and wind pressure on the upper body, and a raised contour, which helps to reduce buffeting around the rider’s helmet.

Made from 5 mm thick Lexan, which is scratch and breakage resistant, the screen is designed to be completely distortion free, for a clear view of the road ahead. It also features form stability construction, to help reduce annoying vibrations.

The edge of the screen is laser-rounded with a polished edge, for a safe and attractive finish. The Lexan is also resistant to UV, fuel and to the hairline cracks that often form at mounting points after few years of use.

TUV approved and with a five year warranty against defects in materials or workmanship, the Ergo screen is available in clear or tint options, and retails at £225.00 including VAT. It fits the all new K1600 Bagger, as well as the K1600GT, K1600GTL and K1600 Sport models.
