Knox 2017 Preview

Launched in 2014, the revolutionary Knox Layering System has changed the way riders think about – and wear – motorcycle clothing. Instead of attaching armour and insulation to a motorcycle jacket, making it bulky and ill-fitting, Knox turned traditional thinking on its head by developing a system based around layers – base layer for comfort, armoured layer form protection, mid-layer for warmth & outer layer for protection from the elements.  This approach is now becoming mainstream as more & more riders accept it as the ideal solution for bike wear.

Not only does the Knox Layering system make motorcycle clothing better fitting and more comfortable, but thanks to the Dual Fit System, jackets can be adjusted so that they can be worn casually, unlike traditional bike jackets, which become saggy when the armour is removed.

Styled in the company’s London design studio and combining its award-winning protection with other patented technologies, the range has evolved yet further for 2017.

Unveiled at Motorcycle Live last month, the 2017 additions to the Knox Layering Range are generating excitement from new and existing customers, particularly striking a chord with riders looking for a different and more secure way to wear armour, and to those needing a more flexible ‘everyday’ solution to rider wear.

The new Knox Layering Range will officially hit the stores in February 2017, but a selection of the new additions will be on stand at the MCN London Motorcycle Show earlier that month.

In the meantime, check out the video of the Knox 2017 collection for a sneak preview of what’s to come:

Aprilia Racing Factory Works

The factory works project makes a special, high performance range of bikes available, created on the extraordinary RSV4 base, sold and supported directly by Aprilia Racing, the factory bike that has won 54 world titles. The new FW-GP is fully loaded with technology developed in MotoGP

The history of the Aprilia RSV4 is one of the most sporting and victorious ever for a single model in the factory derivative category. From 2009 to the present, this extraordinary Italian V4 has collected seven world titles in the World Superbike championship, sealed further – in the 2015 season – by the FIM CUP Superstock 1000 Rider and Manufacturer titles. This is an extraordinary racing career that stems from the technical leadership of the factory model, reconfirmed constantly by its multiple wins in comparative tests organized by the most authoritative international motorcycle periodicals.

Aprilia Racing – the Piaggio Group’s most advanced development, innovation and experimentation platform – launched the “Factory Works” programme last year to make the same technology developed for the world champion bike available to anyone who wants to compete in top level factory derivative championships or for those who simply want to have an RSV4 with optimised performance for track use. The programme includes the realization of RSV4 “Factory Works” bikes developed in compliance with the Superstock and Superbike championship regulations in the different countries, with various levels of chassis, electronics and engine modifications. In 2017, this extraordinary project will reach a new peak, introducing an even more powerful version of the RSV4, called the FW-GP, fitted with the V4 with bore taken to 81 mm and pneumatic valve timing, a configuration similar to the one that Aprilia raced officially in the 2015 MotoGP world championship. Therefore, Aprilia Racing is the first to make all the technology developed in MotoGP available, accompanied by a complete range of exclusive services, before, during and after sale, that aim not only to make this experience truly unique and unrepeatable, but also to allow the customer to take maximum advantage of the RSV4 FW-GP’s full potential.

Romano Albesiano, Aprilia Racing Technical Manager comments on the new and extraordinary initiative: “Aprilia Racing has always competed in the most selective world speed championships, like MotoGP, in order to acquire experience and to develop technologies that we can also apply to the factory product. The RSV4 is the best example of the close collaboration between the racing world and production. With the Factory Works programme, Aprilia Racing now offers something more, something truly unique – the chance to own a true racing bike. Different levels of sophistication are available: it starts with an RSV4 optimised for the track, moving on to the SSTK version (exactly like the bike that dominated the 2015 Superstock 1000 FIM Cup) all the way to a true Superbike. For 2017 we decided to push farther, making an extreme RSV4 configuration available, fitted with an engine that has pneumatic valve timing. With the FW-GP, Aprilia Racing provides its customers, not only with the technology developed in MotoGP, but also with special treatment in terms of information, support and fine-tuning of the bike before, during and after the purchase, just like the riders have who race with Aprilia Racing, in order to allow them to take maximum advantage of this exceptional bike’s full potential.”

All of the versions begin with the already exceptional technical base of the MY 17 Aprilia RSV4 RR Race Pack.

These customers will receive truly special treatment: they are invited to the Aprilia Racing headquarters in Noale to stipulate the contract, partly so that they can select the ideal configuration for their needs and budget along with our engineers. During preparation of the bike, they will receive “live” images of the outfitting progress and they have a telephone line and address available for any other needs, both of which remain active subsequently in order to receive information or request support. The bike is hand delivered by Aprilia Racing engineers with pick up, if desired, at Noale. The customers also have the right to receive Aprilia Racing branded full track leathers and a paddock pass for an entire MotoGP Grand Prix weekend, in addition to an invitation to participate in an Aprilia track day, where Aprilia Racing engineers can adjust the bike’s settings based on their riding needs and provide the best possible technical tips to take full advantage of the RSV4 FW-GP’s mechanical and electronic potential. In any case, an Aprilia Racing engineer will always be at the track, any time the customer wants to use the FW-GP.

The Factory Works programme provides, included in the price of each model, technical training aimed and providing all the information required to best adapt the vehicle to the rider and circuit characteristics, as well as a test session on the track with the Aprilia Racing test team in order to ensure that the instructions are put into practice.

Ventura Bike Pack System for Yamaha MT-10 and XSR900

Two of Yamaha’s most popular naked machines – the MT-10 and XSR900 – have been given the Ventura treatment, so owners can unlock their touring potential without messing with the bike’s minimalist looks or affecting weight, width and handling.

Stripped-out street bikes like the MT and XSR offer little concession to carrying luggage, with compact seats and subframes and few secure strapping points – the minimalist look also doesn’t really lend itself to bulky, hard luggage. Discreet, lightweight and with fuss-free fitting, the Ventura Bike Pack System is the ideal solution.

Combining the best features of soft and hard luggage, the Ventura System uses a sturdy rack-mount to hold the load safely and securely, and offers a choice of packs that are light, easy to handle off the bike and can be rolled up and stashed away when not in use.

It attaches using existing points on the sub-frame, it doesn’t add much weight or any width. The Pack’s unique ‘slide on, ride off’ fitment eliminates the need for straps or bungee cords, so it’s quick and easy to detach and reattach too.

Packs come in a variety of styles and sizes – from a 35 litre weekend bag, to a massive 102-litre touring combination – and come with carry handles and shoulder straps for easy use off the bike.

Both Pack and Rack can be removed in seconds, leaving only the discreet L-Brackets behind. The rider then has the option of fitting a pillion Grab Handle or a Sport Rack, designed for transporting small loads. Alternatively, the Brackets can be removed completely.

A typical system for a naked machine like the MT or XSR, including L-Brackets, Pack-Rack optional Grab-Handle and the 47-litre Mistral Pack (pictured) retails at £359.96 including VAT.

For further details, prices and a full list of pack options, call Ventura on 01256 704909 or visit www.ventura-bike.co.uk

OptiMate guide to winter battery care

Winter attacks your motorcycle’s battery on lots of different fronts. As the temperature drops, the chemical reaction inside the battery slows down, reducing its capacity and its ability to accept a charge. Add to that the increased strain you’re putting on it with increased use of headlight and auxiliary/fog lighting, heated grips and clothing and you’re heading for battery failure.

Even if you don’t use your bike very often through the winter months, charge is lost due to alarms / immobilisers, clocks and on-board computers and through self-discharge – the battery uses a little of its own energy every day to keep itself alive.

A proper long-term battery care routine is vital to keep performance at its optimum throughout the cold months.

Regularly charging and maintaining your battery not only keeps it working to maximum capacity, it can also double its working life, as well as significantly reducing the likelihood of failure.

Optimise with OptiMate

Recommended by most major motorcycle manufacturers, OptiMate chargers and optimisers can maintain, test, charge and even repair a bike’s battery, all completely automatically.

All OptiMate chargers run a unique ‘connect and forget’ 24hr, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year programme, so they can and should be connected to your bike’s battery and left to do their work – no user input required. The battery is checked and topped up hourly and a desulphation pulse is delivered to keep all the plates 100% ship-shape.

Featuring easy-to-read displays, they keep you updated with progress and battery condition too.

To get the best out of your OptiMate charger/optimiser, follow these steps:

1. Select the right charger/optimiser

It’s crucial to use the correct charger/optimiser for the type of battery. Obviously, a 6V battery should only be charged with a 6V charger, and a 12V battery with a 12V charger. If you have both, OptiMate 5 VoltMatic automatically selects the right voltage for the battery and it can even save 6 Volt batteries.

Also recognise what kind of biker you are. If you always remember to hook up your charger whenever you park the bike, then the OptiMate 1 or 2 maintainers will do the job, but if you are the forgetful type and want industry leading ‘battery saving insurance’, an OptiMate 3 or 4 is the right charger for your 12V lead-acid battery.

The same goes for CAN-Bus-equipped machines. Not all systems and chargers are compatible – BMW’s system, for example, ‘switches off’ the 12V socket when the ignition is turned off, breaking the connection to the battery. For continuous and unsupervised maintenance, the charger must know how to communicate with the system to connect to the battery. The OptiMate 4 CAN-bus knows exactly how to so it can perform its hourly ‘no supervision required’ test and maintenance cycle.

If you’re running a Lithium (Li-ion) battery, you need to use an OptiMate Lithium charger. That’s because a 12.8V Lithium battery’s working voltage range is higher than a 12V lead-acid – 12.8 Volts measured across the terminals indicates a lithium battery down to 10% charge, whereas at that same voltage a sealed AGM lead-acid battery is 100% charged! OptiMate Lithium will keep your expensive lithium battery 100% charged at 13.6 Volts and it comes with ‘battery saver insurance’ – the industry-leading lithium save programme that will gently bring your lithium battery back up to full charge.

2. Sort your connection

For optimum performance, give your OptiMate charger/optimiser the best possible connection to your battery. OptiMate includes a premium weatherproof battery lead (with ringlets) for quick and easy connection every time you park the bike. If you intend to charge with the OptiMate clips, thoroughly clean your battery terminals and remove any corrosion. Other connection options, such as panel mount sockets, both SAE and DIN, are also available.

3. Environment

For optimum long-term maintenance of batteries, a stable temperature is best. Ideally, try to minimise the difference between day and night time temperature around your battery, but if you cannot  – if your bike is parked in an unheated garage or outside under cover – keep your OptiMate connected 24-7. OptiMate provides a much needed lifeline for your battery, and guarantees it will make it through winter unharmed, even at temperatures well below freezing.

If your bike’s battery has removable filler caps for topping-up with distilled water, be aware that high ambient temperatures can cause the water in the electrolyte to evaporate, increasing the concentration of acid and accelerating plate corrosion. Check the electrolyte level regularly and top-up if needed. Be careful not to overfill, as excess electrolyte is expelled during charging and riding You don’t want a puddle of acid forming on the floor below your bike!

4. Dead batteries

A lead-acid battery left discharged for a long period can appear ‘dead’ however this might not necessarily be the case. OptiMate’s unique SAVE program can recover and repair even deeply discharged batteries, and bring them back to full capacity, automatically.

The OptiMate system can do this with the battery still fitted and connected to the bike, but if it detects live circuitry, it disables the special save mode, so it is more effective to remove the battery and ‘bench-charge’ it. This has the added benefit of allowing a full inspection for signs of mechanical damage, such as bloating or cracks.

The slotted seat design system allows the rider to position the seat ‘up and forward’ for dynamic riding in a roadster position and ‘down and backwards’ for cruising in a more traditional riding position. This is complimented by a simple quick-release function for the clock that enables riders to adjust the position to complement their seating and riding style.

Combined with a low seat height of 690mm when in the low seat position, the Bonneville Bobber is truly accessible to all riders.

Delivering the Bobber’s hallmark hard tail look is an innovative and distinctive ‘cage’ swinging arm with paddock stand bobbin mounts and hidden monoshock rear suspension.

Topping off the engineering innovation is the ‘clean line’ Bonneville technology packaging system, which includes the straight line hidden ‘cat box’ pipe run and the sensitive incorporation of rider focused technology such as the ECU, ABS modulator and immobiliser.

Thrilling sound and ride

Courtesy of the new generation Bonneville HT engine the Bobber delivers category-leading torque for a thrilling hot rod ride and a rich exhaust note. Powered by the critically acclaimed 1200cc high torque engine, as fitted in the Bonneville T120, there is a dedicated ‘Bobber’ tune for more torque and power lower down the rev range. The charismatic 270° firing interval ensures a smooth, linear power delivery from the slick six-speed gearbox.

Evolved specifically for the Bobber to maximise the riding character there is a unique twin airbox set up with two filters, unique intake and exhaust system and new output shaft.

Delivering the rich new Bobber soundtrack is a beautifully finished brushed stainless steel twin skin exhaust system with ‘slash cut’ sawn off peashooter silencers which is shorter and lighter than the Bonneville T120.

Just like all the new generation Bonnevilles, the Bobber engine delivers modern classic capability with ride-by-wire, for enhanced safety and control from twin classically styled throttle bodies, as well as a sensitively incorporated liquid cooling system with a unique radiator and larger fan. This brings better performance and cleaner, more fuel efficient riding.

The Bobber also has an extended service interval of 10,000 miles (16,000km).

Category defining capability, control and comfort

Our ambition was to deliver a genuine bobber – without compromise to the ride, comfort or rider
control, to have it ride just like a Triumph should.

With an all new bespoke frame to suit the unique Bobber geometry and minimal rear end, new forks with bespoke springing and damping, a low seat height, great stand over and first-in-class adjustable riding position the Bobber delivers a truly class defining riding dynamic.

Taking the capability to the highest level the Bobber also features a host of rider focused technology, including:

Ride-by-Wire – Delivering enhanced rideability, feel, safety and control, from a single throttle body.

Riding Modes – Linked to the ride-by-wire system there are two selectable riding modes; ROAD and RAIN. They are selectable via the new switch gear and command two dedicated throttle maps for maximum control and safety in different riding conditions

ABS – The latest generation anti-lock braking system – introducing a new level of safety and control yet remaining unobtrusive and with minimal visual impact.

Switchable Traction Control – Switchable traction control via the instrument menu helps to maximise rider safety and comfort.

Torque Assist Clutch – Designed to reduce clutch lever effort for the rider, bringing a lighter touch and feel to the clutch and making it easier to ride, and for longer.

LED Rear Light – Incorporated into the classic design, it creates a distinctive light pattern with enhanced power efficiency and excellent visibility.

Engine Immobiliser – Thatcham approved immobiliser incorporated into the new key with high value Triumph badge.

Stylish Clock – Feature packed and high quality clock cleverly incorporating a digital menu system for fingertip control while riding.

With:

  • Gear position indicator
  • Odometer
  • Two trip settings
  • Service indicator
  • Range to empty
  • Fuel level
  • Average and current fuel consumption
  • Clock
  • Traction control settings

Finally to enhance the authentic look the Bobber has classic wire-spoked wheels, with stylish black rims and inner tubes fitted with Avon Cobra tyres developed specifically for the Bobber.

With a signature ‘wider rear wheel’ Bobber set up it has a 19’’x2.5’’ on the front, fitted with an Avon Cobra AV71 for reduced mass for high-speed manoeuvrability, and 16’’x3.5’’ wider wheel fitted on the rear, with a category-first AV72 radial tyre with cobra tread pattern for class-leading stability.

Canvas for individual style

The Bonneville Bobber has been designed with customising in mind with over 150 accessories available for more style, detailing and comfort, and for even more performance.

For even an more distinctive character there are high ‘ape hanger’ bars, a statement rider seat and bar end peep mirrors.

For riders who are looking for more long distance comfort there is a stylish comfort seat in a ribbed and quilted version, a heated grip kit and a cruise control kit

To deliver even more performance to the Bobber, Triumph is introducing a new partnership with FOX with a dual branded adjustable rear suspension unit plus a range of new Bobber exhausts from Vance and Hines with beautifully machined aluminium end caps which are adjustable to change the profile.

There is a more distinctive and elegant alternative multi-function 5 inch headlamp – Triumph’s first full LED headlight. This comes with a signature style LED DRL (daytime running light) or LED position light (depending on market). With beautiful Triumph branding and class leading performance both versions will be fully homologated.

To make it even easier for riders to personalise their Bobbers, we’ve also created two exciting ‘inspiration’ kits to use as the starting point to build a Bobber custom, or to have fitted by a dealer as a complete set – the traditional ‘Old School’ kit and the drag racer ‘Quarter Mile’ kit.

2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed Dates Change

Goodwood can today announce that the provisional dates for the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed will change to June 29th to July 2nd. These dates are now confirmed.

The new dates are a consequence of the recently announced change in the F1 calendar, which moves the Baku race later by one week. This will allow the F1 teams and drivers to be present at Goodwood to wow the sell-out crowds at the Festival of Speed as they do every year.

Tickets already purchased will be valid for the new dates so ticket-holders need not change their tickets. We look forward to another spectacular event next year.

Triumph launches Approved pre-owned motorcycles programme

Iconic British motorcycle brand, Triumph, has launched its own Approved pre-owned motorcycles programme. Available through the Hinckley-based firm’s national dealer network, Approved Triumph Pre-Owned Motorcycles gives riders increased confidence when buying a used bike.

As part of the programme, each motorcycle is put through a multi-point inspection by a qualified Triumph technician to ensure peace of mind. Alongside a full engine diagnosis, exhaust system examination and electrical inspection, technicians undertake a comprehensive frame, suspension, steering, final drive, wheel and tyre check.

Adhering to Triumph’s meticulous quality standards, brake systems – including ABS, fluid levels, hose integrity, disc tolerance and pad wear – are also scrutinised, while fairings, seat panels, fuel tank and bodywork are checked for correct fit and finish.

Finally, each model is subject to a full road test by a qualified Triumph technician. This includes hot and cold starting, brake function test, gear change operation, stability test and a comprehensive engine performance check. Only when the technician is happy that the motorcycle performs exactly as it should, is it returned to the showroom for a valet, ready for sale to its new rider.

All motorcycles available through the programme will be Triumph models under five years of age from first registration and will have completed no more than 25,000 miles. Any service required within 1,000 miles or 3 months will be completed, along with a multi-point inspection and all rectification work carried out as required. All Approved pre-owned motorcycles will also have a full service history recorded on Warranty-On-Line.

Paul Lilly, general manager of Triumph UK and Ireland, commented: “After undertaking considerable market research, we found that the majority of riders looking to purchase a used model were often put off by the perceived risk of hidden mechanical issues.

“With a comprehensive multi-point inspection, Approved Triumph Pre-Owned Motorcycles ensures that each bike has undergone a thorough performance, quality and safety check by a qualified technician. We’re confident that each model approved by the scheme will perform like a factory fresh bike for its new owner for complete peace of mind.”

Approved Triumph Pre-Owned Motorcycles is available through participating Triumph dealerships and online. For more information, visit www.triumphapproved.co.uk

New Peugeot Metropolis 3-wheeler

Three years after its launch, the Peugeot Metropolis has evolved. This new Euro 4 compliant model gets 13” front wheels, re-engineered chassis, updated 400cc LFE PowerMotion engine, emergency braking warning system, ABS and Traction Control.

It also retains all the innovations that made the original so exciting – smart-key ignition, Tyre Pressure Management System, Dual Tilting Wheels, flat floor and adjustable backrest/screen.

The lightweight 13″ sport wheels at the front are the most obvious visual change, improving comfort, handling and stability, enhanced by Michelin Citygrip tyres, to maintain the scooter’s excellent road-holding. Both chassis and suspension settings have been given an in-depth redesign, making the frame 50% stiffer and the steering lighter and more responsive.

ABS braking, developed in partnership with Continental and Nissin, reduces stopping distances by 23% compared to the previous model (down from 15.5 M to 10.3 M at 50 kp/h). This is achieved by fitting 230 mm diameter front discs with bigger pistons and a double piston rear brake calliper.

Riders can activate SBC combined braking with the foot pedal, distributing braking effort evenly between front & rear brakes.

For additional safety, the hazard warning lights are automatically triggered by emergency braking. Using expertise from the automotive world, Peugeot is the first motorcycle manufacturer to use this technology. At speeds over 50 km/h [31 mph], the system activates the hazard lights if the vehicle slows by more than 6 m/s [13 mph], and turns itself off when the deceleration is less than 2.5 m/s [5.5 mph].

Switchable TCS (Traction Control System) allows the rider to choose the optimum setting for the best grip in the conditions. There are three settings to choose from; Urban, Sport and off.

The 400cc LFE low-friction engine is upgraded to PowerMotion specification, which meets tough Euro 4 standards for emissions, while maintaining performance (36 HP and 38 Nm torque at 5250 rpm). There are significant fuel savings, particularly at higher RPM, and overall economy is increased from 67 to 72 mpg,

For everyday comfort & convenience, the 12v plug is replaced by a USB socket, the boot is enlarged to take a full-face helmet and the Peugeot Metropolis now comes with two smart keys, that are electronically recognised as soon as the rider is within a radius of 1.5 metres.

A special edition RX-R model will also be available; characterized by a ‘mad black’ livery made more aggressive by red inserts, tinted sports screen and aluminium footplate.

New Peugeot Speedfight 125i

Due out in summer 2017, the 4th generation Speedfight sports scooter gets the latest SmartMotion liquid-cooled 125 cc engine, offering class-leading fuel economy of 134.5 mpg [ 2.1 litres/100 km].

The SmartMotion motor features SYNERJET single-indirect fuel injection and patented ACG [Alternative Current Generator] management. This ingenious system disables the flywheel during acceleration and deceleration phases, but only when the battery is sufficiently charged, increasing fuel economy by more than 5% (measured on the on WTMC 1.2 cycle), and making more power available during the starting phase.

Braking is enhanced with the integral Synchro Braking Concept (SBC), which distributes braking effort between front & rear brakes.

Compact and lightweight, the Speedfight4 125 will be the first model from Peugeot Scooters with 100% LED lighting, including lenticular LED headlamps, “Ice Effect” indicators and rear light layout styled into the “three claws” of of the lion.

All Peugeot Scooters are covered by a 2-year unlimited mileage parts & labour warranty. Information and details of authorised Peugeot Scooter dealers can be found at www.peugeotscooters.co.uk

Skidmarx Screens for BMW S1000RR

Skidmarx have introduced a range of screens to fit the current model BMW S1000RR (2015-2017).

Based on race-proven Skidmarx screens, the double bubble creates an air pocket behind the screen, giving the rider greater protection from wind blast at high speeds. Manufactured in the UK from tough 3mm cast acrylic, it comes pre-drilled and ready to bolt onto the fairing. Available in a choice of clear, light and dark grey tints., it sells for £64.95 including VAT.

For riders who need even greater protection from the elements, the tall TT style screen is derived from designs supplied to racers on the Isle of Man, providing plenty of space to ‘tuck in’ without needing to adopt a ‘racing crouch’. Produced in clear acrylic and tinted options, it retails at £64.95.

Replacement standard screens are made in clear and tints; they cost £59.95.

Skidmarx make race screens too; these are 33% thinner than the road versions, to save weight and improve optical clarity. Prices start at £49.95.

Call Skidmarx on 01305 780808 or visit www.skidmarx.co.uk for more information
