Ducati to reveal new SuperSport at INTERMOT

On the eve of INTERMOT 2016, to be held in Cologne (Germany) from 5 to 9 October, Ducati will be previewing some of the latest developments for 2017 and has confirmed that the eagerly awaited SuperSport will be on show. The unveiling of this latest Ducati bike, scheduled to take place on the Ducati stand (Hall 8, Stand A42/50) at 6 pm on Tuesday 4 October, ends the special press-only day of this key international motorcycle exhibition.

After giving all the Ducatisti and motorcycle enthusiasts at WDW2016 an exclusive look at the SuperSport, the new sport road bike from the Bologna-based bike manufacturer is now ready for a wider audience.

The new SuperSport is a bike for those eager to ride sports-style on everyday roads. Fun, versatile and accessible, with true Ducati sports styling and zest, the SuperSport promises exciting, fun riding sensations while ensuring everyday comfort and easy handling whatever the roads are like. An innovative leap that, even before its debut, has won widespread support and aroused considerable interest; at Cologne, the SuperSport is set to steal the limelight to say the least.

INTERMOT also provides a great opportunity to enjoy an international preview of other aspects of the Ducati 2017 range, such as the stylish “Volcano Grey” colour on the Multistrada 1200 S. More than just new colour schemes, there will be appealing, practical technical upgrades: for 2017 the Multistrada 1200 family features a new airbox in the intake zone and new engine calibration; these changes give the twin-cylinder Testastretta DVT even fuller, more satisfying mid-range power delivery (see the new video at www.ducati.com).

At INTERMOT Ducati will also be presenting the new EURO 4 engines for the Monster 821 and Diavel. The Monster 821 range, moreover, now features the appealing yet assertive “Dust Grey” colour, an opaque grey of outstanding freshness and flair that perfectly matches the red frame and wheels.

Major upgrades have also been made to the Ducati Superbike family, which, on the 1299 Panigale and 1299 Panigale S, sees the introduction of the latest EVO version of Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC). These systems, first seen on the exclusive 1299 Panigale S Anniversario, maximise the performance and active safety of this Ducati Superbike. The new DTC and DWC EVO feature a new algorithm that makes their intervention faster and more precise.

At INTERMOT Ducati will be in Hall 8 on Stand A42/50, together with Ducati Scrambler and its “Land of Joy”, where events, entertainment and plenty of bikes, accessories and apparel will ensure visitors to this great biannual bike show get involved and have fun.

Autumn Gremlins Sorted

Gear Gremlin has a selection of add-ons to keep both bikes and riders in peak condition over the autumn/winter months.

Classic Neon Cover

If a motorcycle or scooter is parked outside overnight, covering it is a must. A quality, well-fitted and properly specified cover will offer protection from rain, frost, snow, dust, spray from passing vehicles, bird droppings and UV exposure, not to mention prying eyes – the police advise owners to cover their machines if possible.

The Classic Neon Cover is made from a waterproof, soft and durable fabric, with elastic hems for a secure fit and reinforced side cut-outs so that a security chain can be passed through. The top portion of the cover is neon yellow, for added visibility in low light.

The Classic comes in three sizes, is washable and comes with a handy storage bag; retail prices start at £45.95 including VAT.

12V Intelligent Charger

Battery care is also crucial during colder periods, when low temperatures cause the power output from the battery to drop, as the chemical reaction that generates electrons to supply the current proceeds more slowly.

Gear Gremlin’s 12V Intelligent Charger is microprocessor-based and will charge and maintain all 12V gel and lead acid batteries, from 2.3Ah – 120Ah capacities.

Fully automated, the Intelligent Charger adjusts the current according to the battery’s capacity rating and can diagnose – and attempt to recover – a sulphated battery. It will also check for and indicate a weak or damaged battery.

Its built-in automatic voltage management system cuts charging when the battery is fully charged, and the charger also features protection from polarity reverse, short circuit, over temperature, over current and over voltage, for complete safety and peace of mind. Retail price = £65.99 including VAT.

HEATED GRIPS – FHG2

Designed to provide continual, controllable warmth, heated grips reduce the need for bulky, insulated gloves and enable riders to select the ideal temperature to keep hands functioning comfortably – crucial for autumn/winter riding, where conditions require careful operation of the throttle, clutch and front brake.

Each Gear Gremlin heated grip set comes complete with a combined on/off and temperature control switch, which is easily operated with gloved hands, and can be handlebar or bodywork mounted for quick operation. There are two temperature settings so riders can tailor the heat level to the conditions.

The premium-quality FHG2 grips are designed to provide a confident hold and comfort, and are manufactured from anti-split and anti-perish rubber. SRP: £57.99 inc VAT.

For details on the complete Gear Gremlin range of motorcycle and rider accessories, call The Key Collection on 0117 971 9200 or visit www.thekeycollection.co.uk.

Italian Premier Matteo Renzi inaugurates the new Ducati Museum

Fully renovated in celebration of the company’s 90th anniversary, the Ducati Museum in Borgo Panigale reopens in style with an inaugural ceremony in the presence of Italian Premier Matteo Renzi.
Claudio Domenicali, Ducati CEO, welcomed the visit by premier Renzi who, together with the President of the Emilia-Romagna Region, Stefano Bonaccini, and the Mayor of Bologna, Virginio Merola, visited the new Museum and met with the guests in attendance at the ceremony.
During the ceremony to inaugurate the new Ducati Museum, Prime Minister Matteo Renzi visited the renovated exhibition, as well as the Ducati Style Centre and the Fisica in Moto laboratory. The Premier was able to admire the bikes that have written the company’s history, as well as viewing current models and getting exclusive insight into future projects. Products that, thanks to their technological content and unmistakeable style, contribute to making Ducati a true example of “made in Italy” excellence.
The restructuring of our Museum – stated Ducati CEO Claudio Domenicali during the inaugural ceremony – is a very important and significant event for our company and for all the Ducatisti fans who follow and appreciate our brand and our bikes across the globe. To have the honour and the privilege of officially opening the facility in the presence of our Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, makes us particularly happy and proud. We wanted to renovate this museum as a tangible sign of the vitality and strength of a company that is celebrating its 90th anniversary and looking to the future. Never before has Ducati been able to compete and achieve such results on the markets and on track, while also positioning itself for continued growth in the future”.
The project to restructure the Ducati Museum, which boasts more than 40,000 visitors per year, was just one of many activities that the Borgo Panigale manufacturer implemented in celebration of its 90th anniversary (1926-2016), confirming just how important the history and products are to this prestigious brand and to the entire community of enthusiasts and fans who have always played an active and fundamental role.
Characterised by a very modern concept in which the colour white dominates, the new Ducati Museum ensures that the product takes centre stage, maintaining one section that is dedicated to the racing world. Each bike included in the collection is treated and presented as a true work of art, a story told using a language composed of shapes and colours, and enhanced by dedicated installations. The exhibitions, installations and colours all contribute to presenting the fundamental values of the Ducati brand, or rather style, sophistication and performance. With its new look, the Ducati Museum provides a journey through the company’s legendary history, where every bike is conceived, designed and created to provide unique emotions.
With its new layout, the Ducati Museum also dedicates space to the most iconic road bikes that have written Ducati history. The Museum’s new narrative is developed according to three paths: the history of Ducati production bikes and the social and cultural context in which they are conceived; the racing history with exhibits including race bikes and winners’ trophies, and the final pathway, which tells of ‘Ducati moments’ or rather those facts, people and technological innovations that have contributed to Ducati’s history, including, of course, the ‘Ducati heroes’, the most representative riders who, on board Borgo Panigale bikes, have written key chapters of motorcycle racing history.
The new Ducati Museum hosts 44 bikes, comprising 26 race bikes and 18 road bikes. The area dedicated to the production bikes is subdivided into four rooms, with each bike presented and exhibited together with the relative technical specification, a description of the individual components on show, and enhanced with original artistic installations that render the exhibition even more current and emotional. An example for everyone: the DNA structure that accompanies the Ducati 916, a symbolism to represent the Ducati brand’s founding values, expressed in a superlative way by the stylistic and technical work of art created by Massimo Tamburini, the undisputed forefather of a new generation of sports bikes.
A visit to the new Ducati Museum becomes an intense adventure, in which each bike is a real work of art to be experienced, a true journey of passion and discovery, with new horizons still to be discovered.
Another initiative to mark the 90th anniversary of Ducati involves a four-day period during which visitors can enjoy free entry to the Museum, from 1 to 4 October 2016, between 10am and 6pm. Days dedicated to the city of Bologna – that celebrates Santo Patrono, its patron saint, on 4 October – and to the many fans who live in the region and can take the opportunity to visit the renovated museum.

Avon Tyres showcasing full motorcycle tyre range at Intermot 2016

British tyre manufacturer Avon Tyres is attending one of the biggest motorcycle shows in Europe this year – the Intermot motorcycle show, in Cologne, Germany.

Taking place on 05-09 October, over 200,000 two-wheel enthusiasts from more than 100 countries will be gathering for five days, mixing with up to 1,000 manufacturers.

Avon’s dedicated motorcycle team will be located on stand A036, in Hall 6, to answer questions on the latest and most popular additions to the Avon Tyres range – including the new TrekRider, highly-acclaimed TrailRider, StreetRunner for smaller cc commuter bikes, and Avon’s newly launched motorcycle tyre inner tubes.

The Avon TrekRider will be on display for the first time, a tyre combining superb off-road and on-road performance. The TrekRider is Avon’s first adventure tyre that offers a true 50/50 split – a tyre that works as well in mud and gravel as it does on asphalt, giving fantastic performance in both areas.

Avon’s inner tubes are made to the highest standards, from the finest butyl and natural rubbers – essential for those using conventional spoked rims on modern bikes, or riding with traditional rims on classic machinery. Whether it is for a giant adventure dirt bike, or a lovingly restored vintage classic, there is an Avon inner tube to suit.

Visitors will also be able to see Avon’s 3D Ultra family of road legal race/track day and sports tyres, as well as the Cobra cruiser tyres, OE fitment on the Triumph Thunderbird LT, which will also be on display on the Avon stand.

BMW Motorrad launches Airbag Jacket Street Air Dry by Alpinestars

BMW Motorrad is launching the BMW Motorrad Street Air by Alpinestars, an advanced airbag system offering comprehensive upper body protection and the freedom to ride a motorbike in both on- and offroad situations.

The technology adopted from the current Alpinestars Tech-Air® street airbag system – a system requiring no motorbike-mounted sensors. The airbag system of Alpinestars utilizes a sophisticated algorithm that detects imminent danger with the greatest precision and inflates the full upper body airbag to provide a highly effective crash protection system, ahead of the first impact.

The BMW Motorrad Street Air Dry by Alpinestars textile riding jacket is designed to interconnect with the Alpinestars airbag system vest and is an essential component for the system to be fully operational.

It offers instantaneous inflatable upper body protection to the back, kidneys, chest and shoulders – the most exposed areas in a crash. It is also fully independent, incorporating its sensors close to the rider’s or passenger’s body means the airbag activates without the need for a triggering wireless signal to be sent from the bike.

This jacket is the first safety product to be launched under an exclusive agreement, between BMW Motorrad and Alpinestars and is available for both female and male customers in different colorways from October 2016.

The extraordinary event programme of INTERMOT has its eye on a podium finish, with spectacular stunt shows and action for big and small. The basic conditions for an unforgettable course of the trade fair from 5 to 9 October 2016 are optimal: all top players of the industry will be there, and the range of offerings extends from motorcycles, scooters, e-bikes, combustion and electric motors, as well as trailers and sidecars, to parts and accessories for motorised two-wheelers. INTERMOT customized, an area of focus specially targeting the customizing scene, is also taking place for the first time.

Everyone that is anyone in the world of motorised two-wheelers is represented with an impressive presentation at INTERMOT 2016. Trade visitors and the public can look forward to the sophisticated presentations of BMW, Ducati, Harley-Davidson, Honda, Horex, Kawasaki, KTM, Kymco, the Piaggio Group, Polaris, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha. Expansions: Harley Davidson and Horex! Daytona, Held, Rev’it, iXS and Rukka will be among those presenting their latest clothing products. Innovations in the parts/accessories segment will be presented by Paaschburg & Wunderlich, Johannes J. Matthies, Parts Europe, Touratech and SW-Motech. Well-known return or new exhibitors of INTERMOT include the renowned companies Detlev Louis and Alpinestars.

INTERMOT 2016 has been able to grow significantly with regard to exhibitors. In comparison to the event (2014: 960), this year 1,127 exhibiting companies are participating – this corresponds to a plus of more than 17 percent. The growth is especially noticeable in the INTERMOT customized section. As a leading global meeting point, INTERMOT is also distinguished by a very high level of internationality. 69 percent of the exhibiting companies come from abroad. The strongest contingents are from Italy, the United Kingdom, Pakistan, the Netherlands, the USA, but also China and Taiwan.

INTERMOT Cologne will fill halls 5-10 of the Cologne fair grounds with a total gross floor area of 129,000 square metres. The successful concept of distributing the market leaders through all halls will be continued in order to ensure a steady visitor flow to all areas and segments. BMW and Yamaha will be exhibiting in hall 6, as will Polaris with the Victory and Indian brands. The Piaggio Group, Suzuki and ZERO are points of attraction in hall 7, while Ducati, Kawasaki and Kymco are positioned in hall 8. Harley-Davidson, Honda, Husqvarna, KTM and Triumph will be presenting their range of services in hall 9. Trade visitor fans will find INTERMOT customized in hall 10, an autonomous show within the show for the customizing-scene. It is already a tradition that trade visitors and end consumers will experience the whole world of elecromobility on two wheels in hall 5.2. The younger generation finds exactly what it’s looking for in hall 5.1: more than 3,500 square metres of action and fun for kids.

Consistent conceptual expansions
INTERMOT 2016 convinces with consistent conceptual expansions in order to build on its position as the leading business and event platform. Trends and branch developments that move the industry and the motorcycle community will be integrated into the event in a way that is suitable for the target groups.

INTERMOTcustomized – meeting point of the scene
In this way, the international customizing scene has been established for the first time as a standalone show-within-a-show format under the name “INTERMOT customized”: a presentation platform tailored to the target group. In hall 10.1, in addition to the V2 custom scene, the new wave custom scene of café racers and modern adaptations will also be showcased. Exhibitors here include, for example, vehicle manufacturers BMW, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, Triumph, Yamaha and Boss Hoss. The providers DMD, John Doem Nolan and Rusty Pistons from the helmets and clothing product segment will be there. In addition to this, many young and wild companies will be showing their products in the Craftrad Concept Store. Among others, Custom Chrome Europe, Motorcycle Storehouse and Detlev Louis will be exhibiting parts and accessories for the customizing segment. Impressive conversions and concept studies from WalzWerk Racing, Fred Kodlin, No Limit Custom, Independent Choppers and Ehinger Kraftrad will be on display.

INTERMOT customised will be supported by a host of creative industry and sporting special events, competitions and races. Highlights will surely be the custom competition Essenza, initiated by INTERMOT together with Glemseck 101, or the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building with its spectacular conversions. The world championship focuses mainly on the category of V2 customs, but also addresses the new custom scene with the category of café racers.

Also in the INTERMOT customized programme: in the Garage Area one can look over the shoulders of the pros working on project bikes; the wild custom sprint bikes of the Sultans of Sprint, which you can experience on the racetrack and in a special event, as well as a barber shop and a tattoo studio.

INTERMOT e-motion, the special segment on the subject of electromobility, is also getting a new look. Developed as a forward-looking, standalone show-within-a-show format, trade visitors and consumers can find everything involving electromobility on two wheels in hall 5.2: from brand-new pedelecs, e-bikes and e-scooters through to innovative e-motors for retrofitting and a wide range of accessories. Besides a significantly expanded offering, there will be a tourism area for interested visitors. Various regions will be presenting the advantages and opportunities of electric mobility in the tourism sector at a joint stand.

With “Area 4” in hall 6, the quad and the ATV scene has a central meeting point that conveys an initial overview of the theme. This is where quad specialists and motorcycle brands that also manufacture quads will showcase their product ranges in quads, ATVs and side-by-sides, divided into four thematic areas: sport/off road, utility vehicles, and custom.

New is also the “Boulevard of Touring”, which will run centrally along the northern boulevard at INTERMOT 2016. Touring motorcycles parked in the theme areas invite visitors to sit on them and try them out. On the Touring stage, an interesting, non-stop programme of events will be on offer: GPS and photo workshops, accounts of exciting experiences and varying photo shows, as well as tips from experienced adventurers. There is something for everyone in the Tourism Centre, immediately adjacent to the entrance area of Hall 8: advice from specialist travel operators and inspiring ideas for your next trip from hotels in the major holiday regions.

Show & action at it’s best – the events of INTERMOT 2016
As an event-oriented trade fair, INTERMOT will once again not only be offering its visitors exhibitor presentations, but also impressive shows and many other highlights on the topics of motorcycles, scooters and motorsport. To facilitate this, the entire outdoor space of the Koelnmesse, 70,000 m² in total, is being made available for the event, along with special areas within the halls. Here the general public will be able to try out the new models on the different test tracks, watch racing action and breathtaking professional stunt shows live. There are also lots of exciting things for even the youngest fans of two-wheelers to discover and try out.

INTERMOT Cologne will be open daily from 5 to 9 October 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on 7 October from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Admission is free as of 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, 5 October is reserved exclusively for trade visitors. Private visitors can gain entry on this day with a specific day ticket on special terms. The availability of these tickets is limited. There will be no programme of outdoor activities on the trade visitor day.

Triumph celebrates ten years of the Street Triple

The UK’s leading large-capacity motorcycle manufacturer, Triumph, has unveiled three limited edition models of its Street Triple roadster to celebrate a decade since the bike’s launch. These factory specials have been created in association with custom paint shop 8BALL, which will provide a unique livery on the Street Triple R DARK and the Street Triple Gold and Street Triple Grey.

Featuring a 675cc engine, the Street Triple delivers 106 PS with 68Nm of torque for rapid acceleration. The DARK adopts the full specification of the factory’s well-established Street Triple R. The bike features a dark and moody paint scheme synonymous with previous factory DARK editions, with special effect grind incorporating the Union Flag to both sides of the fuel tank. The top of the tank identifies the series number within the 50 unit production run. This model also features a factory belly pan, fly screen and seat cowl colour matched to the paint scheme, and half Alcantara seat with hand stitching in red.

Both Street Triple Gold and Grey editions feature hand painted wheels colour matched to the machine livery, proudly housing the 10 year anniversary logo. Like the DARK both these versions include half Alcantara seats with colour matched hand stitching.

Triumph UK sales manager, Bruno Tagliaferri, commented: “Special edition models are always well-received by our dealers and customers. The DARK concept adopted by the factory on three previous editions has generated a cult following. Meanwhile the two 10-year anniversary models are a huge tribute to the success of this model in the UK. For each of the models, we have chosen unique colours to help the bike stand out and make them truly individual. Additionally, all of the bikes will come with a signed Triumph factory Certificate of Authenticity – so be quick, they won’t be around for long!”

Only 50 bikes of each model will be produced, which will be exclusively available via the Triumph’s UK dealer network. The Street Triple R Dark is available from 1 October, for a retail price of £8,599, and the Street Triple Grey and Street Triple Gold become available from mid-October at a retail price of £7,999.

BMW Motorrad demonstrates C evolution scooter at CENEX 2016

CENEX is the perfect opportunity for BMW Motorrad to demonstrate the commitment the company has made to a low carbon and sustainable future for two-wheel transportation.

BMW Motorrad was one of the first manufacturers to offer a completely electrically powered two-wheeler in the form of the well-received C Evolution scooter which was launched in 2014.

The C Evolution is 100% electrically-powered and shares battery technology with the BMW i3 car. It produces a peak output of 48 bhp (35 kW) and 72 Nm of torque at the crankshaft makes for 600 Nm of torque at the rear wheel in practice, enabling acceleration from 0 – 50 km/h in 2.7 seconds. What’s more there is a range of 100 kilometres in urban setting, four riding modes and energy recuperation during braking. The electric drive in the C evolution ensures a whole new sensation.

BMW expects this scooter to be eligible for the soon-to-be-announced OLEV grant which would see £1500 cut from the current retail price of £13,500. Details of the forthcoming OLEC grant will be released in the coming weeks.

BMW i was the technological inspiration behind the C evolution battery. The modules are identical to those used in the BMW i3 and are produced at the same plant in Dingolfing. The battery is charged using the integrated charging device – either at a regular household power socket or at a charging station. When the battery is completely flat, the charging time will ideally be approximately three hours (220 V, 16 A). A charge level of 80 % is reached after just 2:15 hours.

Typically BMW: design that embodies the future.

The styling of the C evolution is inspiring and futuristic yet still instantly recognisable as being typical of BMW Motorrad. LED turn indicators, LED lights, TFT display and the paint finishes demonstrate innovative power. Meanwhile the typical split face at the front clearly reflects the maxi scooter’s BMW Motorrad genes.

Avon Tyres introduces new motorcycle inner tube range

Avon Tyres has launched an all-new range of motorcycle tyre inner tubes.

Supplied in smart packaging, the Avon tube range comes in a massive variety of sizes to suit virtually all current tubed tyre fittings, including 10-, 16-, 17-, 18-, 19- and 21- inch rims.

Doug Ross, Avon Tyres’ Head of Global Motorcycle Tyres, said, “We are pleased to be able to offer consumers this new Avon tube range. Bikes, blazers, beards and banter give a two-fingered salute to prostate cancer

Later this month (25 September), dapper gentlefolk from across the Midlands will join together at the heart of British motorcycling, as the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride comes to Coventry. For the first time ever, Triumph will throw open its doors to host the charity rideout, which will leave from the iconic British manufacturer’s headquarters in Hinckley.

A global phenomenon founded by a group of Australian friends in 2012, the DGR aims to raise money for two hugely worthwhile causes – prostate cancer research and suicide prevention. It’s all about scramblers, café racers, classic-styled bikes and bobbers, as well as the charming chaps and chapesses that own them.

Taking place in over 400 cities around the world, rules for joining the rideout are simple – dress dapper, sport your best facial furniture, ride a motorcycle of appropriate character and enjoy a fantastic ride to support a highly worthwhile cause!

This year’s Coventry rideout will congregate at Triumph’s Dodwells Road site in Hinckley, before touring the town and heading out across country to the centre of Coventry. The Tamworth ride will also start from Triumph’s headquarters, before breaking from the group and enjoying a different route.

Martin Hough, marketing manager of Triumph UK & Ireland, commented: “As one of motorcycling’s most renowned global charity events, welcoming The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride to our headquarters in Hinckley seemed only fitting!

“The event unites riders from around the world to celebrate everything we love about taking to two wheels, while raising awareness and money for a truly worthwhile cause.

“Welcoming riders to Hinckley is a great way to bring the local community together, as well as providing Triumph fans with exclusive access to the Triumph site.”

Mark Hawwa, founder of the DGR, commented: “When I started the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, I wanted to change the perception of men on motorcycles and show our sophistication and style. We are an inclusive and friendly community. Having fun and a smile is what it’s all about!

“Since the first rideout in 2013, the event has grown exponentially, with more than 37,000 participants taking part globally last year. As well as continuing to raise money for prostate cancer research, we are also focusing our health goals on suicide prevention for 2016, following the tragic loss of one of our ride hosts to depression.”

Taking place in more than 400 cities worldwide, the DGR is free to all with a donation encouraged for those participating.

Registration for this year’s Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is open now. For further information or to book your place, please visit www.triumph.co.uk or www.gentlemansride.com

Knox Layering for Women

Men & women need specifically designed motorcycle clothing, not only because they are different shapes, but also because they tend to feel heat and cold differently.

A recent study by Dutch scientists suggested that contrasting metabolic rates cause women to feel the cold more quickly, while men struggle in hotter conditions.

The unique layering system from Knox enables women riders to achieve a perfect fit that is comfortable whatever the weather.

Starting with a base layer, made from Merino Perform Advantage wool, a clever combination of super soft Australian Merino wool mixed with cooling and fast drying synthetic fibres, body temperature is regulated.

Next comes an armoured shirt, tailored specifically for women, with CE-approved impact protectors designed for the female form, so that the armour sits comfortably in exactly the right place, without looking bulky.

In colder conditions, a quilted jacket or windproof Cold Killers mid-layer can be added, either of which can be kept on once the outer layer is removed, unlike traditional bike jackets with a thermal lining attached to the outer shell.

And finally an outer layer – Knox offer a choice of waterproof wax style jackets or a classically styled leather jacket. Both use an innovative dual fit zip system, which runs along the inside of the sleeve and body of the jacket. With the zip open, you can wear an armoured shirt under the jacket; with the zip closed, the jacket is the perfect size to wear casually, without protection.

For details on the Knox layering system call 01900 825825 or visit www.planet-knox.com

Knox Zephyr waterproof Overjacket for Him & Her

Knox designed this lightweight waterproof shell to fit neatly over their new Zephyr summer riding jacket. Perfect for unpredictable rainy weather in the summer, the Zephyr allows wearers to extend their riding season into the autumn.

The soft polyester shell has a laminated waterproof and breathable membrane and all seams are taped, to ensure that water stays on the outside.

Outer and inner storm flaps help to prevent rain entry through the front YKK® zip and the cuffs have adjustable stud fastening.

Reflectra® reflective material on the main body and neckline appears black in natural daylight, but becomes reflective in headlights, for better visibility in low light conditions.

Packing away into its own small zipped carry pouch, the overjacket fits neatly into a concealed back pocket on the Zephyr jacket for men and can be attached to the belt on the women’s version.

Available in three Sizes – S/M, L/XL & XXL/3XL – the Zephyr Waterproof Overjacket retails at £49.99 including VAT.

INTERMOT 2016: a spectacular programme of events awaits motorcycle fans once again

An attractive programme of active participation events and shows for old and young alike

As an event-oriented trade fair, INTERMOT will once again not only be offering its visitors product displays by companies exhibiting at the fair, but also impressive shows and many other highlights on the topics of motorcycles, scooters and motorsport. To facilitate this, the entire outdoor part of the Koelnmesse exhibition grounds – 75,000 square metres in total – are being given over to the event, along with special event areas within the halls. From 6 through 9 October 2016 in Cologne, the general public will be able to try out the current models on the various different test tracks, watch racing action and breathtaking professional stunt shows live. There are also lots of exciting things for even the youngest fans of two-wheelers to discover and try out, making INTERMOT the end of the rainbow for both motorcycle fans and families who love events. New to the programme this year are the 1/8-mile sprints as well as the Dirt Track School and the dirt track race strip.

The supporting programme of events at INTERMOT Cologne 2016 at a glance:

Event Action Areas – Outdoors
Exciting races, stunt shows and test tracks await visitors on the approx. 70,000 square metres of the Koelnmesse P1 and P8 event areas. On the Saturday of the fair, INTERMOT, together with the organisers of GLEMSECK 101, will be presenting the Sultans of Sprint and the top bikes in the Essenza competition in the legendary 1/8-mile sprints on the drag race strip – making sure that fans of high-performance purist bikes will get the most out of INTERMOT 2016. Dutchman Herman Jolink will be going at full throttle on his Ducati in the drag racing event. Another premiere at INTERMOT 2016: for the first time ever at a trade fair, a dirt track racing circuit! Among others, Dr. Martin Hünning and Dr. Robert Allgaier will be showing why this new sport is becoming increasingly popular. But we haven’t piled up several hundred cubic metres of mud and special flooring exclusively for the dirt trackers: on the Friday and Saturday of INTERMOT, the elite of the German side-by-siders will be competing in a final round of races. This is a unique opportunity to see vehicles that can only normally be seen at the Paris-Dakar rally. Proof that biking under electric power should be taken seriously will be provided by the riders in the e-bike World Challenge, featured by INTERMOT. On the drag race strip, spectators can witness live and at first hand just how much action, passion and power there is packed into the latest electric two-wheelers when they go at full throttle!

In the INTERMOT 2016 stunt shows, the best in the business will turn physics upside down and plant it all on the rear wheel. The who’s who of the stunt scene will be on show, performing before a large audience on the INTERMOT P1 and P8 event areas: Several-times European Champion and the public’s favourite, Herczeg “Mokus“ Balácz will be travelling from Hungary to be at INTERMOT. Equally ready for the off are Dirk Manderbach (BMW), Oliver Ronzheimer (Suzuki) and Chris Rid (Kawasaki), Horst Hoffmann and Dominik Csauth (both Suzuki), Arjan de Graaf (V2 Harley), local hero Dennis Jansen (Yamaha) and the “Legend Team” stunt crew (Husqvarna, Kawasaki) from Moscow. They will all be pulling off every conceivable and inconceivable stunt that they are capable of. The “Two-Stunt-Team” will be presenting cool stunts on four wheels in its quad show. Austrian Günter Schachermayr will be proving with his Vespa that spectacular stunts are even “doable” on a scooter.

Robbie Naumann and his freestyle motocross team will be performing breathtaking jumps, back flips and whips before an amazed audience – almost 20 metres above the ground. All of this makes for a great warm-up, both for the riders and the audience – as on Saturday evening in the LANXESS arena at the NIGHT of the JUMPS, it will all be about winning valuable points for the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) Freestyle MX World Championship.

Real, live riding fun – the test-ride tracks
The test-ride tracks are an absolute must for all visitors to INTERMOT. There is something here for every fan of two-wheelers – from young to old, from lovers of high-performance motorcycles right through to beginners.

The large test-ride track offers traditional, petrol-powered bikes. Anyone in possession of a valid driving licence can try out the latest one- to six-cylinder bikes here. More than 100 cool bikes of all brands and classes will be on hand. Anyone who does not yet have a motorcycle licence or would like to get back in the saddle can get a ride under their belt on the test track for “riding without a licence/as a returner” under expert supervision on the test track.
Scooters and street bikes from 50 to 125 cc make taking the first steps in learning to ride a motorcycle easy. The quad test track promises riding fun on four wheels, where any visitor who is interested in these four-wheelers and has a valid car driving licence can also try one out: simply choose a model from a range of various different ATVs and quads and off you go. Anyone drawn to travel can feel a first whiff of adventure on the touring enduro test track. These big touring bikes can be ridden under expert supervision on the challenging on-road and off-road test track. Superlight versions of enduros and specially prepared trial motorcycles reflect a trend for off-road touring that has recently emerged and this is exactly what the trial test track enables visitors to try out. To illustrate why this trend is growing in popularity, pros show just what can be done with a competition-level trial bike.
Electric mobility on two wheels is not a contradiction in terms. On the inclines and flats of the EV/LEV test track, visitors can experience the fascination and performance of electric drive technology on the latest e-bikes and e-scooters.

The Kids’ mini test track (P8) has two practice circuits ready and waiting for youngsters: one for mini bikes and the other for mini quads. This is where the next generation of motorcycle enthusiasts can have their first go at riding, safely and under careful supervision. Both circuits count towards the “INTERMOT driving licence”, which links in with other activities for children in Hall 5.2.

Action Areas – Indoors
Hall 10.1 – INTERMOT customized
The international customizing scene has been integrated into the event in a standalone, show-within-a-show format under the name “INTERMOT customized”: a tailor-made presentation platform for the target group. The whole of Hall 10.1 will become the central venue for the customizing show. This is where, in addition to the V2 custom scene, the new wave custom scene of café racers and modern adaptations will also be showcased. Numerous special events and activities on the subject of customizing will be running in parallel. Another event that will also be taking place this year again as a part of INTERMOT customized will be the AMD Championship of Custom Bike Building. It is here that the “who’s who” of customizers will be putting themselves before an international jury with their spectacular conversions. The world championship focuses mainly on the category of V2 customs, but also addresses the new custom scene with the category of café racers. The top 100 will be on show in Cologne, competing to become the 2016 world champion. In the Garage Area, professionals will be working live on site on project bikes, ensuring every step in the process is clearly explained and demonstrated. Tasks like changing the footrests, handlebars, headlights and indicators will be as expertly explained and performed as shaping and fitting a fuel tank. The area even includes a mobile spray booth. In the Garage Area, visitors can watch over the shoulders of professionals while they go about their work, can enquire about tips and tricks and come away with valuable words of advice for their own projects. In addition to the custom presentations in Hall 10.1, INTERMOT, together with Glemseck 101, is launching the “Essenza” competition: wicked conversions of two-wheelers with two cylinders, reduced to the max, made up of only the barest of essential components, highlighting the unique characteristics of the respective brands. This is where the big-name motorcycle brands take on small custom-bike workshops, aiming to take a podium place in the 1/8-mile sprint and the design category. Following an initial performance of the sprint at Glemseck 101, the final will take place at INTERMOT, along with the presentation of prizes to the winners. Online voting is open to the public for over a month, from the Glemseck festival up until INTERMOT, so that the community can use the time to decide which bike is the winner. When they are not tearing down the drag strip in the outdoor area of INTERMOT at full throttle, the outlandish Sultans of Sprint custom sprint bikes can be admired in a special event area. Biking is a lifestyle, especially for customizers. True customizers live life accordingly. Craftrad brings everything together in its concept store – bikes, fashion, design, attitude. This is where your passion for biking comes alive. On the customizing show stage, “The Stage”, visitors can enjoy talks between professionals, interviews with stars of the scene, the AMD World Championship award ceremony, the ESSENZA prize-giving, selected bike presentations and much besides, all charmingly presented by host Ilka Groenwold. Anyone wanting a restyle in true customizing scene fashion can do so in INTERMOT’s barber shop and tattoo studio. Rounding off the INTERMOT customized programme will be the “Naked Bike” show, hosted by the trade magazine Roadster. This is where visitors will be able to have a close look at unclad motorcycles in a brand-independent presentation, sit on them and get a first feel for these motorcycles – with specialist editors on hand to provide advice.

Hall 10.1 – Sports bikes special event
A particular highlight for fans of motorsport is the Sports bikes special event focusing on the subject of “Athletes and their equipment”. The trade journal PS – Das Sportmotorrad Magazin will present the latest race bikes from the Tuner GP. In the Racing special event, Bike Promotion and other sport event organisers will be showing base models and special conversions for the racing circuits of the world.

Hall 9 – Dream bike presentation
This year, readers of “MOTORAD” magazine were once again able to vote for their favourites from the last decades. The ten winning machines from the vote will be on display in the MOTORRAD dream bike special exhibition in Hall 9 at the MOTORRAD stand.

Northern section of the Boulevard – Boulevard of Touring
The “Boulevard of Touring“, which will run centrally along the northern section of the Boulevard at INTERMOT 2016 will bring the topics of touring and tourism even more to the fore. Touring motorcycles parked in the themed areas invite visitors to sit on them and try them out. Experts from the touring rider magazine Tourenfahrer will be providing information about the touring motorcycles on display and will be happy to offer ideas and suggestions for travel plans.

Hall 6 – AREA 4
At INTERMOT 2016, an area dedicated to quads and ATVs has been created to act as a central venue, presenting a market overview and providing an initial general insight into the subject. This is where quad specialists and motorcycle brands that also manufacture quads will showcase their product ranges in quads, ATVs and side-by-sides, divided into four themed areas: sport/off road, utility vehicles, touring, and custom. AREA 4 – showcasing the coolest quads and ATVs, all in one hall! Quadwelt (Quadworld) magazine will be awarding prizes for the best custom quads and ATVs, the ATV and Quad magazine will be presenting the “quads of the year”.

Hall 5.1 – Kids‘ Action
INTERMOT 2016 is the highlight of the year and not just for “grown-up” motorcycle enthusiasts: it is also a real experience for children and teenagers. Hall 5.1 will be entirely dedicated to “Kids’ Action”. Accommodating every age group, the hall offers a balance bike track for toddlers, whilst older children can test their skills on the bicycle and obstacle courses and gain their INTERMOT driving licence, try out Segways and Ninebots, do their first laps at the electric bike and motorcycle riding school or cruise in appropriate style at the classic bikes riding school. And the German Road Safety Organisation (Verkehrswacht) is once again supporting the education of the little visitors in the safe use of roads with a track and a park where they can practise cycling and road use. Of course, there will also be a gaming zone and “survival course“ where they can let off steam. Apart from the tracks, in 2016 the INTERMOT kindergarten will once again be available to take care of the youngsters with games, painting and fun activities, while the parents enjoy the fair. And, saving the best until last, children under 12 enter free and the cost of this fun for youngsters between 12 and 17 is only Euro 2.50 for tickets bought in advance!

Hall 5.2 – INTERMOT e-motion
The home of INTERMOT e-motion, Hall 5.2 is dedicated to the subject of electric mobility. On the ElektroRad stage, pros from the magazines ElektroRad (Electric Bike) and aktiv Radfahren (active Cycling) will be showcasing everything to do with e-bikes, touring, safety, e-scooters and, above all, how much fun can be had with electric two-wheelers. The start of the e-bike test track is also located directly in Hall 5.2. The latest bikes will be showcased and information given about them by the manufacturers. Afterwards, the bikes can be taken for a test ride on the strip! In the e-bike tourism section, INTERMOT will show how to make best use of the power of an e-bike to have an active holiday and which attractive tours are worth taking. In cooperation with Tambiente Magazine, we bring that real holiday feeling to Hall 5.2. Teams from the most exciting regions of Germany and from the neighbouring countries will show you there and then, where your next tour on an e-bike could take you.

INTERMOT Cologne will be open daily from 5 to 9 October 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and on 7 October from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, 5 October is reserved exclusively for trade visitors. Private visitors can gain entry on this day with a specific day ticket on special terms. The availability of these tickets is limited. There will be no programme of outdoor activities on the trade visitor day.

TomTom VIO: The smartphone-connected satnav for while your on a scooter

TomTom has created the world’s first scooter smartphone-connected satnav called TomTom VIO.  The VIO is highly functional but makes a strong visual statement – once you’ve seen it on a scooter the bike looks naked without it. The circular glove-friendly touchscreen device acts as an extension to a connected smartphone, which uses the well-developed app as the brains. No more taking a phone out of the pocket while riding, finally.

The weatherproof display unit offers turn-by-turn navigation both visually and audibly via a Bluetooth® helmet audio system. When a call comes in, the display will show a photo of who it is so the rider can take it via the headset while directions remain on the TomTom VIO display.

TomTom’s famous speed camera warning system is built-in. But following the design of the TomTom VIO even these alerts are minimal and attractive. TomTom VIO’s speed display changes colour to red warning riders if they are going too fast, and then back to the original colour scheme when travelling within the limit. That means even without directly looking at the VIO the rider is acutely aware of their current speed.

Design detailing continues inside and out on the TomTom VIO thanks to snap-on silicon covers available in six different colours – ideal for matching up with the scooter. Then, to keep consistency, even the maps can be set to the same colour using one simple touch in the app.

Corinne Vigreux, co-founder and managing director, TomTom Consumer, said: “The innovative new TomTom VIO is game-changer for scooter riders. Not only will it speed up the commute, but gone are the days of fiddling with your mobile at the traffic lights, or wondering who’s calling as you negotiate the traffic. For the first time, riders can explore the urban jungle safely, and confidently, in style.”

The TomTom VIO is available from 8 September at Halfords and Amazon and on the TomTom website, priced £149.99. The device ships with a black, snap-on silicon cover – six other colours are available for purchase.
